This wikiHow teaches you how to change both your public IP address and your private IP address on a Windows computer. Your public IP address is the address that your computer broadcasts to other networks, while your private IP address is your computer's specific address within your own wireless network. Changing either of these may fix connection issues.

Step 1 Unplug your router and modem.

  • You may want to check your current IP address before doing this.
  • Simply unplugging the router and modem from the wall will work.

Step 2 Disable your computer's Wi-Fi.

  • Click Wi-Fi in the pop-up window.

Step 3 Wait for five minutes.

  • You may want to check your IP address again to make sure it has changed.

Step 6 Contact your ISP.

Renewing the Address

Step 1 Open Start icon.

  • If you aren't an administrator on your current computer, you won't have this option and thus won't be able to renew your computer's IP address.

Step 5 Click Yes when prompted.

Changing the Address

Step 1 Open the Settings...

  • IP address - Usually, your device's IP address will be "192.168.1.X" (or a similar set of numbers), wherein "X" is specific to your device. Change the "X" value to a number between 1 and 100. Make sure you don't use the same IP address as another device on your network (e.g., your phone).
  • Subnet prefix length - This depends on your IP address, but will usually be "255.255.255.X".
  • Gateway - This is your router's IP address.
  • Preferred DNS - Your preferred DNS address (for example: "208.67.222.222" for the OpenDNS server, or "8.8.8.8" for Google's server).
  • Alternate DNS - A secondary DNS address (for example: "208.67.220.220" for the OpenDNS server, or "8.8.4.4" for Google's server).

Step 9 Click Save.

What to Know

  • Windows: Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings and follow the instructions below.
  • Mac: System Preferences > Network . Select a network > Advanced . Go to the TCP/IP tab and select Manually . Enter info.
  • iOS: Open Settings > Wi-Fi , tap the circled i next to the network, select Configure IP > Manual . Set up the new IP.

This article explains how to change your IP address manually by switching from the router's assigned DHCP address to a static one on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. It also covers how to change your router's public IP address, which appears as the public IP address of every device on the network unless you use a VPN.

You can also get a new IP by releasing and renewing your IP .

Change a Windows Computer's IP Address

If your Windows computer has the IP address set up as a static one, change the IP address as follows:

Open Control Panel and select Network and Sharing Center . If you don't see it, first select Network and Internet .

Choose Change adapter settings .

Double-click the connection that you want to change the IP address on. For example, to change the wireless adapter's IP address, double-click the one that mentions Wi-Fi.

Select Properties .

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) .

Either alter the IP address or select Obtain an IP address automatically to have the router control the IP address.

If you leave the setting to obtain an IP address automatically, the router automatically assigns an IP address to the computer. However, when you enter the IP address information, the computer's IP address stays static.

Leave Obtain DNS server address automatically selected. Otherwise, your DNS server settings remain empty, which may cause other connection issues.

Change a Mac Computer's IP Address

Here's how to change the IP address on a Mac.

Open the System Preferences app on the Mac and select Network .

Select your Wi-Fi network in the left panel and click Advanced .

Select the TCP/IP tab.

Select Manually in the drop-down menu next to Configure IPv6 (or iPv4) and enter the information for the new IP.

Change a Phone's IP Address on iPhone

You can also change the IP address on a mobile device such as the Apple iPhone as follows:

Open the  Settings  app and select Wi-Fi .

Tap the small ( i ) next to the network and select Configure IP .

Choose Manual . Enter the network details manually, such as your IP address and DNS information.

The choice of a specific local IP address does not affect the network performance in any meaningful way.

Change a Phone's IP Address on Android

It's also possible to change an Android device's IP to a static IP on your network.

Android phones can vary depending on the manufacturer of the device. Some manufacturers alter the Android OS to meet their specifications, which means the steps you need to follow may differ slightly from those listed here. These steps should apply to most Android devices.

Go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi .

Tap the network that you want to change the IP address for.

Select Forget .

Tap the network from the list of available Wi-Fi networks.

Select Advanced options .

Choose Static .

Scroll down and fill out the IP address fields.

Enter the Wi-Fi password at the top of the screen.

Select Connect .

Change a Router's IP Address

To change the router's IP address, log in to the router as an administrator. From the control panel, change the IP address to whatever you like. However, this IP address is usually changed when there's a problem with it. The default IP address should suffice for most situations.

How to Change Your Public IP Address

An external public IP address is the address used to communicate with networks outside of your own, such as those on the internet. Use a VPN to mask or hide your real IP address. You can also use a web proxy to mask your public IP.

Why Change Your IP Address?

Some ISPs assign static IP addresses to their subscribers. Home users are commonly configured with a dynamic IP address . Either way, you may be able to contact your ISP to request a new static IP or a dynamic IP change. You can't change your external internet IP address on your own.

Some people change their public external IP address to avoid online bans or bypass country location restrictions that some sites impose on video content.

Changing the IP address of a client computer, phone, or router is useful when:

  • An invalid address is accidentally configured, such as a static IP address in the wrong numeric range.
  • A malfunctioning router provides bad addresses, such as an address used by another computer on the network.
  • Installing a new router and reconfiguring a home network to use its default IP address range.

No. There are many reasons someone may want to change their IP address. However, if you're on a work setup or have a home network running, messing with IP addresses can sometimes cause headaches, so make sure you know what you're doing.

It's possible but not probable. If you're power-cycling your router , the address likely won't change. Still, if you reset your router to factory defaults, it's more likely the device will assign new addresses.

Yes, you can. However, you need third-party software. A VPN , or virtual private network, gives you unique IP addresses in places anywhere on earth.

How to change your IP address

Ever wondered if it’s possible to change your IP address? The good news is that you can—and I’ll show you how.

An IP address on a screen of code, representing an article about how to change your IP address

Changing your IP address: the easy way

Changing your ip address: with a vpn, how to automatically update your ip address: windows, how to automatically update your ip address: macos, how to manually change your ip address: windows, how to manually change your ip address: macos.

If you're concerned about your digital privacy, well, you have every right to be—third-party snoopers, hackers, and other online nasties are all hungry for your data, after all. Luckily, changing your IP address can help shore up your security, and it's not all that difficult to do.

All of your traffic is tied back to your device's IP address—all of your gadgets have one, including your PC, laptop, mobile, and even your router. Your internet service provider (ISP) can use your IP address to keep tabs on what you get up to online and build up a profile of your habits (that is, if you're not using one of the best VPNs in the biz). Unfortunately, this can then be used to generate creepy, invasive, targeted ads. Changing your IP address ensures that nobody can watch over your shoulder.

If you change your IP address to one located in another country, however, you'll also be able to check out region-specific content—like Netflix shows that are only available in the US or exclusive sporting events. That's especially handy if you're traveling overseas and want to keep up with your favorite series, or if you just need a new digital boxset to binge.

So, let's get stuck in—here's how you can change your IP address on a computer running either Windows 11 or macOS.

The simplest way to change your IP address is to unplug your modem. Keep in mind that this may not work on the first try. It’s even possible that you’ll need to leave your router unplugged overnight.

  • Check your IP address . Our guide on how to find your IP address details the steps.
  • Unplug your router for five minutes. This may take longer depending on your ISP.
  • Plug your router back in and check to see if your IP has changed. If not, repeat the steps.

ExpressVPN currently sits at the top of my VPN rankings—and for good reason. It's wickedly quick, unblocks pretty much every streaming platform, and makes changing your IP address as simple as hitting a button. Oh, and you can get an extra 3 months free if you pick up a 12-month plan.

If you want another super-easy, super-reliable way to change your IP address, you'll want to recruit the help of a secure VPN . Because VPNs route your traffic through a secure server, and encrypt your data, they prevent your ISP (and other nosy onlookers) from monitoring your browsing sessions.

VPNs also make it incredibly easy to change your location. You can take your pick of servers, usually scattered across the globe, and fool the sites you visit into thinking you're really there (when you're actually still on your couch with your cat). Then, you'll have unfettered access to streaming content, be able to bypass pesky blocks, and even snag the best deals on region-specific sales.

  • Open your VPN application . If you've never used it before, you'll need to run through a quick installation process and input your login details.
  • Choose a server . If you’re after increased privacy, choose one in your home country. If you want to access content from another country, pick one in your desired location.
  • Press the connect button .
  • Wait a few seconds for the VPN to connect . You'll now be using a new IP address.
  • Press Win + R on your keyboard to open the Run box.
  • Type "cmd" in the search bar then hit Enter to open the command prompt box.
  • Type "ipconfig /release" . Be sure to include the space between "ipconfig" and "/release". Hit Enter. A wall of text will flood the screen.
  • Type "ipconfig /renew" and hit Enter. Close the command prompt window afterward.
  • Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen. Click System Preferences.

2. Select Network .

  • Select Network.
  • Click Advanced.
  • Click TCP/IP on the following screen then click Renew DHCP Lease.

If you already have an IP address you'd like to use, and want to take matters into your own hands, here's how you can manually set your IP address on a Windows device.

  • Press the Start icon in the taskbar. Alternatively, click on the search icon.
  • Type "settings".
  • Click Network & Internet .
  • Select your network (either Wi-Fi or Ethernet).
  • Find IP assignment and click Edit.
  • Click on the drop-down menu and select Manual.
  • Toggle IPv4 on.
  • Set your IP address on the following screen, along with Subnet mask, Gateway and Preferred DNS. You can also select Alternate DNS. Click save.

On the other hand, you have an IP address you want to use and a Mac device, this is how you can manually set it on macOS.

  • Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the desktop and select System Preferences. On the System Preferences window that appears, click Network.
  • Click your current network and select Advanced.
  • Click the TCP/IP tab. Choose Manually from Configure IPv4.
  • Type a new IP Address . Click OK and then Apply.

How to Change Your IP Address on Windows 10 (3 Methods)

We show you how to change your IP address in Windows 10 using the Settings app, Control Panel, and Command Prompt.

Featured - 3 ways to change the IP address in Windows 10

  • 1 How to Change IP Address in Windows 10 via Settings
  • 2 How to Change your Windows 10 IP Address in Control Panel
  • 3 How to Change IP in CMD (Command Prompt)

IP addresses are one of the primary ways services identify a user. Though your IP address may change automatically from time to time, if you've been assigned the wrong IP by your router or want something more static, you need to know how to change your IP address on Windows 10 manually.

What is an IP address?

An IP address is a series of numbers that identifies your device and therefore allows information to be sent between devices. Without IP addresses, computers on the internet and your local network would not be able to differentiate between different devices, routers, websites, etc.

However, IP addresses also come with some downsides. For starters, somebody may be able to use your IP address to get a general idea of your location. Services may also utilize your IP address to track you across the web.

Unfortunately, changing your IP address will with the methods outlined below will not disguise your location. As the IP address will still be connected to your ISP, it can still be traced to their nearest networking hub. It will also not help if you have been banned by a service – you're only changing the IP address on your local network, not the one the internet sees. For that kind of protection, you should consider using Tor or a VPN.

That said, if you do want to change IP address on Windows 10, you'll need to have access to your administrator account. If you do have access, you can learn how to change IP by following the steps below:

How to Change IP Address in Windows 10 via Settings

Unsurprisingly, the simplest way to change your IP address in Windows 10 is via the in-built settings app, but there are a few things you need to look out for when it comes to choosing your new IP:

Press the Start button, then click the settings cog, above the power button. Alternatively, press Windows + I .

Windows 10 - Open Settings

If your IP address is currently set manually and you're running into issues, you can change the dropdown in “Edit network IP settings” to “Automatic (DHCP)” and press “Save” .

Windows 10 - Settings - Network & Internet - Wifi - Edit IP Assignment - Automatic

When you change your IP address, it's important to make sure the information you enter is correct. Before you start, it's useful to gather:

– Your current IP address – Your subnet mask – Your gateway (router IP)

If you don't know these details, you can run the ipconfig command in Command Prompt to obtain them.

Ideally, your new IP address should be of the same format as your old one. For example, if your current IP address is 10.0.0.1, you'll probably want to keep the 10.0.0.x format. Make sure you don't set your IP to the same as your gateway or other devices on your network.

Once you're done, press “Save” .

Windows 10 - Settings - Network & Internet - Wifi - Edit IP Assignment - Manual - Fill it

How to Change your Windows 10 IP Address in Control Panel

If you prefer the old-school way of doing things, the Control Panel may be better suited to you. In some ways, its interface is easier to navigate when it comes to IP editing. Here's how you can use it for that purpose:

Press Start and then type “Control Panel” . Click the top result.

Windows 10 - Open Control Panel

At this point, you'll likely have to authenticate yourself as an administrator.

Windows 10 - Control Panel - View Network Status and Tasks - Wi-Fi Status - Properties

If your IP address is currently manually assigned and you're running into issues, you can tick “Obtain an IP address automatically” here instead and click “Save” .

Windows 10 - Control Panel - View Network Status and Tasks - Wi-Fi Status - Properties - Check Internet Protocol Version 4 - IP Automatically

Once you're done, press “OK” . You can leave the DNS fields blank, though it's worth noting that there are advantages to changing them.

Windows 10 - Control Panel - View Network Status and Tasks - Wi-Fi Status - Properties - Check Internet Protocol Version 4 - IP Manual

How to Change IP in CMD (Command Prompt)

The command-line is often the fastest way to get things done, and this is no exception. You can change your IP in Command Prompt in under a minute if you need to. Here's how:

Press Start and type “Command Prompt” , then click “Run as administrator” on the right-hand side.

Windows 10 - Open Elevated Command Prompt

Before you change your IP, you need to know the name of your interface. This will likely be “Wi-Fi” if you're on a Wi-Fi network or “Ethernet” if you're on Ethernet.

You can check yours with netsh interface IP show config . While you're there, note down its default gateway and subnet mask.

Windows 10 - Elevated Command Prompt - Enter the Command - Identify the Network Adapter

If you set your manual IP previously, you can revert it to automatic assignment via DHCP with the following command:

Remember to replace “Wi-Fi” with whatever your interface is called.

Windows 10 - Elevated Command Prompt - Command for Dinamic IP

If you'd rather set your IP address manually, you can instead use the following command:

Windows 10 - Elevated Command Prompt - Command for Static IP

Now that you know how to change your IP address on Windows 10, you may be interested in learning more about your network. Here's how you can change your network name or disable a Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter .

How to change your ip address from the command prompt in windows.

It's easy enough to change an IP address on your PC using Control Panel, but did you know you can also do it from the Command Prompt?

Quick Links

Launch command prompt as admin to use netsh, view your network information with command prompt, change your ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway, change your dns settings in command prompt, key takeaways.

  • You must launch Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Terminal as admin to use netsh.
  • Use the "netsh interface ipv4 show config" command to find the full name of the network interface you want to change.
  • Modify your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway using the command "netsh interface ipv4 set address". You can also change DNS settings using "netsh interface ipv4 set dns".

Changing your IP address with the Control Panel interface isn't difficult, but it does require clicking through a number of different windows and dialog boxes. If you're a fan of the Command Prompt, though, you can get it done more quickly using the netsh command, which is just one of the great network utilities built into Windows .

We're going to use the netsh command, but it requires that Command Prompt be launched as administrator to work. The netsh command allows you to configure just about any aspect of your network connections in Windows.

To launch Command Prompt (or PowerShell) as Admin, open up the Start Menu, search "cmd," hover over the result, then click "Run as Administrator."

Run Command Prompt as administrator.

In Windows 10 or Windows 11, you can also right-click the Start menu (or press Windows+X on your keyboard) to open the Power User Menu and choose "PowerShell (Admin)."

You can (and should ) use PowerShell for this instead.

Before you change your IP address and related information, you'll need to find the full name of the network for the interface you want to change. To do this, type the following command:

netsh interface ipv4 show config

The output of netsh interface ipv4 show config. The Wi-Fi adapter is highlighted in red.

Scroll down until you see the interface you're looking for. In our example, we're going to modify the Wi-Fi interface, which on our machine is just named "Wi-Fi." You'll also see other default names that Windows assigns to interfaces, such as "Local Area Connection," "Local Area Connection* 2," and "Ethernet." Just find the one you're looking for and make note of the exact name. You can also copy and paste the name to Notepad and then back into Command Prompt later to make things easier.

With the interface name in hand, you're ready to change the IP Address, subnet mask, and gateway. To do this, you'll issue a command using the following syntax:

netsh interface ipv4 set address name="YOUR INTERFACE NAME" static IP_ADDRESS SUBNET_MASK GATEWAY

So, for example, your command might look something like the following:

netsh interface ipv4 set address name="Wi-Fi" static 192.168.3.8 255.255.255.0 192.168.3.1

Where the info is replaced by whatever you want to use. In our example, the command does the following:

  • Uses the interface name "Wi-Fi"
  • Sets the IP address to 192.168.3.1
  • Sets the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0
  • Sets the default gateway to 192.168.3.1

And if you're using a static IP address but want to switch to using an IP address assigned automatically by a DHCP server — such as your router — you can use the following command instead:

netsh interface ipv4 set address name="YOUR INTERFACE NAME" source=dhcp

You can also use the netsh command to change the DNS servers used by a network interface. Third-party DNS servers — like Google Public DNS and OpenDNS —can be faster and more reliable than the DNS servers provided by your ISP. Whatever your reason for changing your DNS server , you can do it either at the router so it affects all the devices that get their information from the router or at the individual device. If you want to change the DNS servers for just one PC, it's easy to do with the netsh command.

You'll need to use the command twice: once to set your primary DNS server and once to set your secondary, or backup, DNS server. To set your primary DNS server, use the following syntax:

netsh interface ipv4 set dns name="YOUR INTERFACE NAME" static DNS_SERVER

So, for example, your command might look something like the following (in which we set it to Google's primary public DNS server, 8.8.8.8):

netsh interface ipv4 set dns name="Wi-Fi" static 8.8.8.8

To set your secondary DNS server, you'll use a very similar command:

netsh interface ipv4 set dns name="YOUR INTERFACE NAME" static DNS_SERVER index=2

So, continuing our example, you might set your secondary DNS as the Google Public DNS secondary server, which is 8.8.4.4:

netsh interface ipv4 set dns name="Wi-Fi" static 8.8.4.4 index=2

And just like with the IP address, you can also change it so that the network interface grabs its DNS settings automatically from a DHCP server instead. Just use the following command:

netsh interface ipv4 set dnsservers name"YOUR INTERFACE NAME" source=dhcp

And there you have it. Whether you like typing at the command prompt better or just want to impress your coworkers, now you know all the command line magic you need for changing your IP address settings.

The Command Prompt application, sometimes referred to as command shell, is found in most Windows NT-based operating systems. Its purpose is to execute specific commands for troubleshooting or solving specific Windows issues, performing advanced administrative functions, and automating tasks via batch files and scripts.

That said, you can also use it to change your IP address when you want to spoof it to bypass geoblocks or online bans on sites that impose such restrictions on their content, or change your Domain Name System (DNS) servers for troubleshooting reasons or to make surfing more secure and faster.

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 1

In this guide, we’re going to show you how to change your IP address and DNS servers using the Command Prompt in Windows 10.

How To Change IP Address Using Command Prompt

An IP address holds information about your device, location, your internet service provider (ISP), and browser information.

Changing it is useful when you have a malfunctioning router that’s providing addresses used by a different computer on the network or an invalid address is accidentally configured.  It’s also helpful when you want to install a new router and reconfigure your home network to use the default IP address range.

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 2

The first step to changing your IP address is to find the network name for the interface you want to change.

  • Open an elevated Command Prompt by typing CMD in the search bar and clicking on Run as Administrator .

In our case, we’ll be modifying the WiFi interface, but you can pick the correct interface for your case. Make note of the interface name.

  • To change the IP address, type this command: netsh interface ipv4 set address name=”YOUR INTERFACE NAME” static IP_ADDRESS SUBNET_MASK GATEWAY

In our example, this command would look like this: netsh interface ipv4 set address name=”Wi-Fi” static 192.168.0.173 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.0

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 5

This command will use the Wi-Fi interface, set the IP address to 192.168.0.173, set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and set the default gateway to 192.168.0.0.

If you want to switch to using an IP address automatically assigned by a DHCP server instead of a static IP address, use the netsh interface ipv4 set address name=”YOUR INTERFACE NAME” source=dhcp command.

How To Change DNS Servers Using Command Prompt

A DNS server holds public IP addresses and related hostnames in a database, and is used to resolve or translate the hostnames to IP addresses. The server does this by running special software to communicate with other servers through special protocols based on certain requests from the computer.

The conversion process is thoroughly vetted and verified, and it happens quickly behind the scenes so as to obtain information corresponding to the server that the computer is looking for, and then tells the original connecting computer where to go so that it can connect to that server.

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 6

There are several reasons why you’d want to change your default DNS server , but the main ones are:

  • Boost your privacy when getting around a firewall, bypassing geoblocks or ISP blocks on a website
  • Increase security
  • Parental controls like blocking websites from your router
  • Speed your surfing, which your own ISP’s DNS servers may not offer because they’re not always reliable or up-to-date

Note : You can change DNS servers individually for your home network on your router or on computers, smartphone, and Chromebook, among other devices

How To Change DNS Servers With Command Prompt

Follow the steps below to learn how to change DNS servers using Command Prompt.

  • Open an elevated Command Prompt by typing CMD in the search bar, and clicking Run as Administrator .

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 7

  • Type netsh and press Enter .

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 8

  • Next, type interface ip show config and press Enter .

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 9

  • Find the network interface whose DNS server you want to change, and enter the netsh interface ipv4 set dns name=”YOUR INTERFACE NAME” static DNS_SERVER . This will set your primary DNS server.

From our example above, we changed the IP address for the “Wi-Fi” interface, so we’ll use the same example to change DNS servers.

For purposes of this guide, we’ll use Google’s primary public DNS server, 8.8.8.8. The command will look something like this: netsh interface ipv4 set dns name=”Wi-Fi” static 8.8.8.8

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 10

  • Next, type the netsh interface ipv4 set dns name=”YOUR INTERFACE NAME” static DNS_SERVER index=2 command to set the secondary DNS server. Again, we’ll use Google’s public DNS secondary server, 8.8.8.8  as an example, which will look like this: netsh interface ipv4 set dns name=”Wi-Fi” static 8.8.4.4 index=2.

Change IP Address and DNS Servers using the Command Prompt image 11

Note : You can use the netsh interface ipv4 set dnsservers name”YOUR INTERFACE NAME” source=dhcp command if you want the network interface to automatically pick DNS settings from a DHCP server. Continuing with our example, this command would look like this: netsh interface ipv4 set dnsservers name”Wi-Fi” source=dhcp

Command Prompt is a great tool to use when you want to change IP addresses and DNS servers. It’s faster and saves you the hassle of having to click through several windows and dialog boxes from the Control Panel interface just to get to the IPv4 Properties dialog box to do the same thing.

Easy Ways to Change Your IP Address

Your IP address is how the internet — and anyone who tracks you — identifies you. You can’t go online without an IP address, but it can be unsettling to think you’re being watched. Learn how to change your IP address on a phone or computer. Or, get a VPN to change your IP address automatically and encrypt your connection while you browse.

How to change your IP address automatically

You can change your device’s IP address automatically by connecting to a VPN or a proxy server. Your device’s IP address will change, but the IP address for any other devices on your network won’t. Changing your device’s IP address through a VPN or proxy doesn’t affect your router settings either.

Don’t worry about what happens if you change your IP address. An IP is like the address to your house — it’s just a number that lets others know where you are. Changing your IP address is like changing the number on your mailbox: you'll confuse strangers, but your friends will still know how to reach you.

Change your IP address with a VPN

Changing your IP address with a VPN is one of the easiest ways to keep online trackers off your trail. Here’s how to do it:

Install a reliable VPN like AVG Secure VPN .

Open the app and toggle on the VPN. Your device’s IP address will change and you’ll be connected to the fastest server location available.

AVG Secure VPN connected to its optimal server location to change an Android's IP address.

Here are some pros and cons to consider when changing your IP address with a VPN:

Pros to using a VPN:

Lets you browse anonymously.

Secures traffic data to and from your device.

Helps you bypass geo-blocked websites and access content.

Encrypts your internet connection.

Prevents internet throttling from your ISP.

Cons to using a VPN:

Slows your normal internet connection speeds.

Some websites don’t allow access with a VPN.

If the VPN is untrustworthy, it may collect your data.

A quality VPN allows you to change your IP address location to almost anywhere in the world, and it will find the best server location possible. However, a VPN connection might be a bit slower than your usual internet connection, because the traffic coming in and out has an extra layer of protection to get through.

You can change your IP address by using a VPN on Windows and Android, and you can set up a VPN on Mac and iOS devices just as easily.

Change your IP address with a proxy server

While a VPN is like changing your house number, a proxy server is like setting up a safehouse to communicate on your behalf. The website server sends information to your safehouse (the proxy server) instead of to your device directly. The safehouse then forwards the information to your real address.

Pros to connecting via proxy:

Unlocks geo-blocked content or sites blocked at work or school.

No installation necessary.

Strengthens the security of your network connection.

Cons to connecting via proxy:

Doesn’t encrypt your connection.

Crowded proxy servers can cause slow internet speeds.

Some untrustworthy proxies can reroute you to unsafe websites or collect your data.

After you get comfortable setting up a proxy or using a VPN to change your IP address, you can experiment with different configurations and uses, such as using a Smart DNS proxy server vs a VPN .

How to change your IP address manually

Learning how to change an IP address manually allows you to make permanent changes to your device’s virtual location. Or you can change between a static IP address — which is great for remote workers or gamers that use Zoom or other VoIP services — and a dynamic IP address that keeps hackers guessing.

Changing your IP manually can be tricky. But if you decide to change your IP address on your own, it’s best to choose an IP address between these ranges:

10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255

172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255

192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255

You’ll also want to avoid IP addresses outside the range of your current network. And don’t change your IP address to numbers that end with .0 or .255. These are usually reserved for TCP/IP protocols . Numbers commonly used by a router or other network device, such as 10.0.0.1, 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.0.100 are easy targets for dangerous hackers .

Other ways to change your IP address

Other ways to change your IP address include using the Tor Browser or resetting your internet router. Both are legal, though many ISPs take notice if you use Tor regularly due to its connection to dark web marketplaces. Resetting your router is as simple as unplugging it and plugging it back in again.

Use Tor to change your IP

Tor encrypts your IP address and internet traffic to hide the data you send and receive. Your identity is hidden by bouncing the data packets you send around many different Tor servers. Here are some pros and cons of using Tor Browser.

Pros to using Tor Browser:

Hides your IP address and real location.

Blocks online tracking.

Allows you to access the dark web.

Tor is maintained in a decentralized structure, so no one controls the browser’s data.

Browser patches are often released quickly due to its open-source nature.

Cons to using Tor Browser:

Attracts a shady user base.

Significantly decreases internet connection speeds.

Is rife with unsecured websites.

Is vulnerable to packet sniffers.

Regardless of Tor Browser’s association with the dark web’s illicit sites, check out the differences between a VPN, a proxy, and Tor and experiment with how to change your IP address in a way that works best for you.

Reset your router to change your IP

You can change your IP address by simply unplugging your router, waiting a few minutes, then plugging the router back in. You may have to repeat the steps multiple times before you get lucky and obtain a new IP address from your ISP. This will change the external IP address for all devices connected to the network.

You can also change a router’s IP address manually by logging into it. Check the list of default router information for more about manually changing the external IP address of your router — default IP addresses and login information differ depending on the router manufacturer.

Here are the general steps for how to manually set your IP address on a router:

Enter your router's IP address into your browser.

Log in with the default username and password.

Choose Network Settings , Administrator Settings , or a similar option.

Go to the Router Settings and type in the router's new IP address.

Save and exit.

Pros to resetting your router:

May improve internet connection speeds.

Reloads the router’s OS and clears the memory.

Can help prevent ISP throttling.

Cons to resetting your router:

Rebooting your router may not change your IP address.

Can disrupt the internet connection of other devices connected to your network.

What is an IP address?

An IP address is a string of numbers that uniquely identifies any device or network connected to the internet. IP addresses are how internet traffic is accurately routed, and how computers recognize each other to send and receive information.

IP addresses can also be categorized into public vs private IP addresses — which refer to the IP addresses that communicate with the larger internet vs those that talk only within your local network, respectively — as well as IPv4 vs. IPv6 . Knowing how to change IPv4 to IPv6 can also make your internet communications much more efficient.

On a PC or Mac, you can find your current IP by Googling “What’s my IP address.” On an Android or other mobile device, open your Wi-Fi settings to check your IP address. And, for anyone keeping tabs on you, it’s almost as simple. That’s why learning how to hide your IP address will help strengthen your online privacy.

Why change your IP address?

Changing your IP address makes it harder for cybercriminals to find and track you, and it helps you unblock certain websites and streaming services. Changing your IP address is also a good way to bypass ISP throttling if you suspect your internet is being slowed down on purpose.

If you can find your IP address , then hackers, scammers, and social media companies likely know how to get your IP address too. And even though your IP address can change with your location, as you move around it becomes easier to learn your device’s whereabouts. And while at home, your IP doesn’t change, so with a little detective work cybercriminals can quickly figure out which IP addresses are home addresses.

Our private browsing guide can show you a few steps toward total browsing freedom. But if private browsing and online privacy are important to you, changing your IP address will be a game changer.

Why You Would Want to Change Your IP Address and How to Do It

Whenever you connect to another device or website by going online, your IP address is used to identify your computer. It can be used to locate your machine and trace your online activities. As a matter of fact, your IP address is currently displayed at the top of this screen along with any other identifying information that can be derived from the address.

Anytime you go online, a record of where you have been is kept due to your IP address being logged at the site being accessed. There is no getting around this fact, though we will talk about some ways that you might get around this issue if you need or want to. Your IP address is a little like fingerprints except for one important aspect. Though with extreme techniques you may be able to modify your fingerprints, it’s a lot easier to change your IP address.

Why Would You Want to Change IP addresses on Your Computer?

There are a variety of reasons that you may want to change your IP address. Here are some common and more esoteric motivations for changing your computer’s IP address. Learning how to change IP address can be beneficial in all of these scenarios.

Planning & Prediction

How to Change Your IP Address

We are going to talk about how to change your IP address using a few different methods. Basically, there are three main ways to change an IP address. They are:

Manually Change IP Address

Automatically change ip address, use a vpn or proxy server to change ip address.

Let’s take a closer look at each method and discuss their pros and cons. There are also some differences in how you handle static versus dynamically assigned IP addresses. Obviously, the operating system that you are using will impact the way you go about this procedure.

Static addresses that are assigned by your ISP can only be changed by contacting your provider. This type of address is not usually given out without purchasing an increased level of service and is normally seen in a corporate or business setting. You will rarely have to deal with a static IP address on your home machine.

image

You may need to change the IP address of a computer in an office or corporate setting in order to gain access to a private network. Depending on your platform, here are the steps you need to perform.

How to Change IP address on a Mac

  • Select System Preferences .
  • Choose Network .
  • Select an active network interface from the sidebar.
  • Note your current IP address so you can make an informed change.
  • Click the Advanced button.
  • Select TCP/IP .
  • Select Manually from the Configure IPv4 menu.
  • Enter a static IP address in the IPv4 Address field .
  • Click OK and then click Apply .

How to Change IP address on a Windows 10 Computer

  • Open Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel.
  • Click on the Connections link.
  • Click on the properties tab of the window that opens.
  • Select Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IP v4) .
  • Choose Use the following IP address and fill in the IP address.
  • Select Use the following DNS server and enter the appropriate address.
  • Check the Validate settings upon exit box and click OK .
  • Your PC automatically runs network diagnostics and verifies your connection.

Other versions of Windows may require a different procedure to be used. We suggest you consult the User Guide for your specific OS.

Here are a few ways to change the IP address on your home computer. This address is provided by your router, which is assigned the address by your ISP. Before trying any of these methods, make note of your current IP address so you can verify that it has indeed changed.

Turning off your router for about five minutes might be all you need to do. In some cases, a longer period of time is required, so you can try leaving the router turned off overnight. Even though your IP address is dynamically assigned by the provider, your ISP may have a long lease time on your address. This means it will appear to be static since you will not be able to change it until the time period enforced by the ISP has elapsed.

Taking your laptop to a location that offers free WiFi and connecting to the network will temporarily change your machine’s IP address as it is dynamically assigned when you log in. When you return home, your address will be assigned based on your home router.

The methods described above may be necessary and sufficient when changing your IP address for configuration purposes. If your goal is to defeat geo-blocking initiatives or simply to maintain your online privacy, then other tactics must be employed. This is where a proxy server or a VPN can be extremely useful.

Essentially, when you use a proxy or VPN you are masking the IP address of your machine. When you are connected to a proxy server, its IP address is what is seen on the Internet, not your machine’s IP address. This eliminates the ability of anyone to track you once you are on the proxy server.

A VPN service works in a similar way but offers more options than directly connecting to a proxy server. VPN services have servers located in multiple locations throughout the world. After you connect to the VPN server, your private IP address is masked and any further online activities will only display the VPN server’s address.

Quality VPN services have servers located in many countries, and by choosing an appropriate one, you can get around just about any restrictions enforced by your local authorities or your ISP.

There are many VPNs available. Some are free, but if you are serious about maintaining online privacy, you should spend the few dollars a month that it will cost for a paid VPN service. The quality paid VPNs that you can choose from include NordVPN , ExpressVPN , and CyberGhost .

There you have it. You should be able to change your IP address if you need to and by using a proxy or VPN you can change it when you want to hide your identity. If you value your online privacy, a VPN is highly recommended.

In today’s interconnected world, understanding how to change IP addresses can be valuable. Whether you want to protect your online privacy, bypass geographic restrictions, or troubleshoot network issues, modifying your IP address gives you greater control over your internet experience.

Many people find the process of changing their IP address intimidating or confusing, asking questions like “What is an IP address?”, “Why would I want to change it?”, and most importantly, “How can I change it without breaking anything?”.

With our years of experience in the field, we can help demystify the concept of an IP address and provide you with clear, concise instructions on how to change them.

How to change IP address with a VPN

Changing your IP address with a VPN is simple. Just follow these instructions:

  • Subscribe to a secure VPN that is capable of changing IP addresses. We recommend NordVPN .
  • Download the VPN onto your device and install it.
  • Connect to a server in the location of your choice. This will be when your IP changes. The server location will determine your new IP, for example, connecting to a server in the USA will provide you with an American IP address .
  • Begin browsing as normal. Changing IP will allow you to access geo-restricted content on streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu.
  • If you encounter any issues, we recommend clearing your cache and cookies. You should also try connecting to an alternative server. If problems persist, you will need to contact customer support for technical guidance.

All you need to do is install a secure VPN, connect to a server and your IP address will change. It’s that easy! But, we do offer more information on the process below.

Why would I need to change my IP address?

Many online services are geo-restricted, which means they are not available outside of their country of origin. The only way to access those services from abroad is to connect to a VPN server in that location. This gives you a valid IP address and causes the website or online service to become available again.

If you travel abroad on vacation, services from back home, such as internet banking or streaming services, will be geo-restricted. As a result, you will need to use a VPN to get an IP address in your home country.

Finally, a VPN can help you get around government, ISP, or local network restrictions. By connecting to a VPN, you can get an IP address in a country where locally censored content is still available. Thanks to the privacy provided by the VPN, you can access those usually censored services without being tracked.

Best VPNs for changing your IP – Our hands-on review

We’ve compared the most important features for the top VPNs here. Prefer to read the in-depth reviews? Start with NordVPN – our #1 choice for changing your IP address .

How to find your current IP address

When you use a VPN it changes your IP address, and you can easily use a tool like ipleak.net to check that the VPN has correctly altered your IP address. The nice thing about IP checking tools is that they not only show your IP address but also the geographical location of that IP address.

This means that if you live in France and connect to a VPN server in New York, the IP address tool will clearly show your location as New York, making it pretty obvious that the VPN is working properly to alter your IP address location.

Of course, if a VPN is working properly, you should also see no DNS leaks or WebRTC leaks in the test results. You can find out more about these types of leaks, and how to check for them, in our detailed guide. So follow the link to find out more.

If you are interested in knowing what your home IP address is (perhaps because you want to share it with a trusted third party, or simply because you want to know your home IP address for interest’s sake) you can find it by using the same tool you use to check that a VPN is working.

You can follow the steps below to find out your home IP address:

  • Make sure you aren’t connected to a VPN or any other location spoofing application (browser extension proxy, Tor, etc).
  • Head over to our IP address checking tool in your browser
  • Make a note of your IP address (it is the string of numbers that appears next to the words Your IP address: )

Now that you know your IP address, you can easily use it to double-check that a VPN is working properly when you connect to its servers. When connected to a VPN, you should not be able to see your real IP address in any of the results. Instead, you should detect an IP address for the remote location.

How to change your public IP address

Here are a few ways to change your public IP address(es):

1. Connect to a VPN to change your IP address

Short for Virtual Private Network, a VPN encrypts your internet connection and routes it through a server in a location of your choosing. Websites, online services, and other devices on the web will only see the VPN server’s IP address and not your real IP address.

VPNs are useful for torrenting, unblocking region-locked content like that from Netflix and BBC iPlayer, and bypassing censorship at schools, in offices, and in countries like China.

Most VPNs can easily hide your IPv4 address, but many VPNs can leak your IP address through various security vulnerabilities. Furthermore, not all VPNs hide your IPv6 address. Choose a VPN that either disables IPv6 or can prevent IPv6 leaks by default.

If you’re not sure how to set up a VPN just follow the simple steps outlined earlier in this article.

2. Use a proxy server to change your IP address

Proxies work similarly to VPNs but with far less versatility and security. Your internet connection goes through a middleman server so that websites and other online resources see the proxy server’s IP address and not your own. Unlike VPNs, proxies often lack encryption, only affect certain apps, and can leak your IP address through other means.

A few different types of proxies can be used to change your IP address:

  • HTTP/S proxies – Usually either browser extensions or special websites that work like a browser within your browser. They only change the IP address on data sent to and from your browser, but do not affect other apps or even DNS traffic. If encryption is included, these are sometimes called SSL proxies.
  • SOCKS proxies – General purpose proxy servers that can be configured for specific apps including most web browsers. SOCKS5 , the latest version, includes support for encryption.
  • SSH proxies – SSH proxies forward internet traffic from apps like your web browser through a Secure Shell ( SSH ) connection to a server, so your IP address is changed to that of the server. Although encryption is included, SSH is not a particularly fast protocol, and many websites and apps might not function properly when connected.

3. Use Tor to change your IP address for free

Tor , short for T he O nion R outer, is a volunteer-run anonymity network. The easiest way to get started with Tor is to download and install the Tor Browser, a barebones web browser that routes all web traffic through the Tor network. Tor encrypts your connection several times and then sends data through multiple nodes—servers operated by volunteer Tor supporters. Each node strips away one layer of encryption, and the sequence of nodes used changes every time you access a different website. This makes it nearly impossible to trace Tor traffic back to the source.

Websites will see the IP address of the last node in the chain, called the Exit Node.

Tor is free, but has its drawbacks. It’s relatively slow and only really suited for basic web browsing. Tor’s anonymity means it is often associated with illicit activity and the dark web, so even though it’s not illegal, using it might draw unwanted attention from your ISP and possibly even law enforcement. Those entities can’t see what you do while connected to Tor, but they can see that you are connected to Tor nodes.

4. Change IP addresses by unplugging your modem

You might be able to get a new IP address by unplugging your internet modem, waiting a few minutes, and then plugging it back in again. When this happens, you release your existing IP address so that your ISP can recycle it. When you reconnect, your ISP assigns you a new IP address.

This method isn’t guaranteed to work because your ISP might just give you the same IP address again. The longer you leave your modem unplugged, however, the higher the chance your IP address changes. If unplugging for a few minutes doesn’t get the job done, consider leaving it unplugged overnight.

Your ISP must use dynamic IP addresses in order for this to work. Most do.

5. Ask your ISP to change your IP address

Another option is to ask your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for a new IP address. Every ISP has different policies about how they handle such requests, so responses may vary. At minimum, you’ll need your account information and current IP address on hand.

Most ISPs use dynamic IP address systems, meaning IP addresses occasionally change and get recycled as devices connect and disconnect from the internet. With that in mind, note that your new IP address might not stay the same forever.

In some cases, you can request a static IP address from your ISP, though this might require paying an extra fee and/or going through an application process. Once provided with a static IP address , you can enter it into your device’s network settings. Static IP addresses never change unless you manually change them.

6. Change networks to get a different IP address

This might seem obvious, but you can get a different IP address by disconnecting from whatever network you’re currently connected to and connecting to a different one. You can switch to a different wifi network, for example, or switch from wifi to a mobile data connection if you’re on a smartphone.

Remember that public and open wifi hotspots are often prime hunting grounds for hackers. Try to stick with a wifi network that requires a password and is encrypted with WPA2.

How to change your private IP address

If you’re connected to a wifi router, then you probably share a public IP address with all the other devices connected to the same network. Each device, however, has its own private, or local IP address.

Changing your local IP address won’t really affect how your device communicates with other devices and servers over the internet, but there might be instances in which you need a different private IP address. These include troubleshooting a malfunctioning router or configuring how local devices, such as printers and IoT devices , function on your home network.

Renew your local IP address

If you’re connected to wifi or some other type of local network, you can change your private IP address from the router admin panel or from the device itself. I’ll show you how to do it on Windows and MacOS.

Here’s how to renew your IP address on Windows:

  • Search for the Command Prompt and right click it to Run as administrator
  • Enter ipconfig /release
  • Enter ipconfig /renew

You should now see a new local IP address.

Here’s how to renew your IP address on Mac:

  • Click the Apple menu and open System Preferences
  • Select Network
  • Highlight the network that you’re connected to in the left pane
  • Click Advanced…
  • Select the TCP/IP tab
  • Click Renew DHCP Lease

You Mac should now be assigned a new local IP address.

The process for changing local IP addresses on the router varies depending on your router manufacturer and firmware. You can usually access your router’s admin dashboard by opening a web browser and entering 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar.

How do I change my IP address on my mobile device?

Changing your IP address is easy on a mobile phone or tablet device. All you need is a VPN. In this guide, we have recommended the best VPNs for changing your IP address. Our recommendations have servers located globally, to let you get an IP address wherever you need it. To change your IP address on a mobile device, follow the steps below:

  • Sign up for the VPN by following the link in this guide ( we recommend NordVPN )
  • Install the VPN app for Android or iOS onto your device. You can find it in your regular app store.
  • Launch the VPN app and login using your credentials.
  • Choose a VPN server from the list and click connect .
  • Your IP address will change as soon as the VPN connection is established.

Static vs Dynamic IPs: What’s the difference?

There are different types of IP addresses, and this can be complicated for beginners. Below, we explain the difference between a dynamic and a dedicated IP address.

Dynamic IP addresses

Each time you connect to the internet or reboot your router, a dynamic IP address changes – in other words, they’re temporary IP addresses. Dynamic IPs are common for home users due to their cost-effectiveness. However, if you perform tasks like hosting a website, it’s best to opt for a passive IP address for stability,

Static IP addresses

In contrast, Static IPs never change, regardless of how often you disconnect from the web. These are best suited to activities that require an IP address that doesn’t change, such as online gaming. Static IPs are a popular option for business users, but unlike dynamic IPs, they come at an added cost. One of the drawbacks of static IPs is their security risks, making it easier for cybercriminals to attack networks thanks to the constant IP address.

Choosing between a static IP or dynamic IP address will depend on your needs. If you’re browsing the web, scrolling socials, and streaming Netflix, a dynamic IP will do. A static IP is the way to go if you’re a hardcore gamer or host a web server.

Your ISP always knows your IP address

No matter what methods you use to change or hide an IP address, the internet service provider always knows public IP addresses. This is inevitable because in order to connect to the internet at all, your ISP must assign you an IP address, and it must know what that IP address is in order to transmit communication and data from the internet to your device.

So even if you used one of the above methods to mask your IP address from websites, services, and other devices on the internet, your ISP is an exception that can see behind the mask.

Even if your ISP can identify you by your IP address, however, you can hide your online activity through encryption. A VPN or Tor will encrypt all data before it ever leaves your device, so even though your ISP can see that you are communicating, it cannot see the contents of those communications.

If you need an easy way to change your IP address to that of a different ISP, try switching between wifi and your smartphone’s mobile data connection. Chances are, your phone carrier and home internet use different ISPs.

How to Change IP address: FAQs

Why does changing my ip address catch captcha requests.

Changing your IP address may result in you catching CAPTCHA requests. The reason for this is because the IP address in question is likely shared with many other users. From the perspective of an online service such as Google , it sees an unusually high number of requests from the same IP address. It then attempts to verify you’re human (as opposed to a bot!) by presenting you with CAPTCHAs.

Will a free VPN change my IP address?

Technically yes, you can change your IP address with a free VPN. There are, however, a few things about these services that make them less than ideal. For instance, free providers usually have very low monthly bandwidth limits and more users than their networks can support. This means that you may not be able to use the VPN as much as you like, and you’ll have to put up with slow speeds when you do get connected.

One of the main functions of a VPN is to keep you safe online. Unfortunately, free providers tend to forget this, with plenty falsely claiming to follow no-logs policies or overhyping the effectiveness of their security features. Why take a chance when your privacy is at stake? We’d recommend choosing a reputable no-logs provider instead of just using whatever is free.

Is it illegal to change my IP address?

No, it’s not illegal to change your IP address. Indeed, you can legally use a VPN in almost any country in the world without having to worry about breaking any laws. However, some online activities are still illegal regardless of whether you’ve used a VPN to change your IP. This includes torrenting copyrighted material or, in some countries, accessing betting websites .

Will a VPN ever expose my real IP address?

The short answer is no. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides an encrypted tunnel between your device and the internet, shielding your real IP address from anyone trying to track you online. The data passing through this tunnel is highly secured with strong encryption algorithms, making it nearly impossible for someone to determine which server or network you are connected to or even know who you are. However, there are a few situations when your real IP address can still be exposed:

  • If a malicious actor takes control of the VPN server and gains access to its logs.
  • If the VPN service provider stores information that includes IP addresses (although many reputable VPNs do not store any logs at all).
  • If a website or service you connect to uses an IP address checker to detect your true identity.

In all these scenarios, it is important to remember that a VPN does provide additional security and privacy by masking your real location and the IP address from websites and services you visit. However, for the utmost security and anonymity, it is recommended that you also use other privacy tools such as browser extensions, secure browsers, and encrypted messaging apps in addition to a VPN. With this multi-layered approach to online security, you can rest assured knowing that your real identity will remain hidden no matter what situation arises.

Do I need a dedicated IP address?

You can use a shared IP address, but they tend to come with more risk. A dedicated or static IP address is recommended but there are only a handful of VPNs with dedicated IP addresses. Having a unique IP address can help to protect you from specific threats, such as a Brute Force attack , but it’s worth noting that it isn’t foolproof. You will also need to ensure you follow good online security practices, including strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and not accessing suspicious websites.

Can I get a new IP address from my ISP?

It’s possible to get a new IP address with some ISPs. However, it really depends on the ISP in question. If you find that your ISP don’t accept your request, you could try some of the other options as listed in this post (such as unplugging your router). Of course, the best way to change your IP address while enjoying additional security and privacy-related benefits is to use a VPN.

Can I choose which location my new IP address is in?

A VPN allows you to choose the location of the server to which you connect. The best VPNs offer servers in dozens of countries around the world. Once you connect to one of these servers, you’ll be assigned an IP address to match that location. For example, if you connect to a server in Australia, you’ll be given an Australian IP address . It’s that simple! So yes, you can choose the location your new IP address is in.

What should I do if my IP address isn't changing with my VPN?

When you connect to a VPN server, your IP address should change to be in the location you selected. A VPN is designed to encrypt your data and route it to the remote service location, and as long as it is working correctly, your IP address should always update to the corresponding location.

Unfortunately, some VPNs are broken. They do not properly conceal your home IP address from the websites you visit, and/or they fail to conceal your DNS requests from your ISP. These problems are called “leaks” and VPNs that suffer from leaks are completely failing to:

  • Provide you with online privacy
  • Conceal your IP address from the websites you visit

If you want to know whether your VPN is changing your IP address, we recommend that you use an online IP address-checking tool . The IP address and DNS request results should show as the location of the VPN server (not your real location).

If for any reason you see a local IP anywhere on the IP leak test’s website, then it is likely that your VPN is failing to properly hide your home IP address. That means that the VPN is either no good (you need a new one), or you need to update your VPN software to make sure it is up to date and working correctly.

Remember that it is important to use a reliable VPN like the ones recommended on this page, and to periodically check for IP leaks using an online IP address-checking tool to ensure your VPN is working correctly on your device.

Will resetting my router change my IP address?

When you restart your router your ISP assigns you a new dynamic IP address. However, if your IP address is static, rebooting your router will retain that IP address.

I used Express VPN, but my subscription just ended and I’m thinking of switching to Nord, because it’s cheaper ATM. By the way, you state that there’s a 2 year deal for Nord with 66% off. When I opened the link you provided it redirected me to a 3 year deal with 75% off. Don’t get me wrong, that’s great, but please fix your links, because they are misleading.

I read lots of your articles.I find them very educational. Please tell me am I correct to sense that you are somewhat bias towards “ExpressVpn”? Thereis one line I disagree as it is not my experience with the 2 VPN providers I have tried out.(Express & Nord)

How do i restore my original IP address?

What i did was to try to change my ip address for some reasons.I've used cmd to do this. The code i typed was ipconfig /release & ipconfig /renew. Since then my ip changes every time i connect to the internet. The problem is that now i can't get my regular internet speed.I was regularly watching youtube video on 720p without any buffering problem. Now i can't even stream any video on any pixel. Now is there any way to reverse the process or how can i get back to my default ip address & get rid of this annoying problem?

casper1973

Those commands just renew your local IP address which has no impact on internet speed. In fact 9 times out of 10 you will just get re-assigned the same IP that you released. As for your external IP address - Unless you specifically requested a static IP from your ISP (you usually pay extra for this service) your IP will change frequently. This is normal behaviour and again it should have no impact on internet speed. Can you think of anything else you done? I really doubt IP addresses have anything to do with your problem.

USAFRet

Your IP address, either internal or external, has nothing to do with the 'speed' you get from the ISP. And changing it via "cmd" only changes what you get from the router. Not your public IP address.

How can the default gateway of router change suddenly from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1?

I used to access my home router—a TP-LINK model—at the address 192.168.0.1 .

But today, I just couldn't do that. Apparantly, it the gateway got changed to 192.168.1.1 for absolutely no reason.

So, how did the gateway got changed? I knew that router generally used one of those IP’s by default. But, didn’t know that they could change the it just like that.

Could it my ISP or the manufacturer of the router or someone else? Also can manufacturer of the router push some sort of software update to the router? Does the router have some sort of operating system independently capable of doing that?

Edit: I found the DHCP settings of the router and it clearly showed that DHCP as enabled and "default gateway(optional)" was set to 192.168.1.1 . I tried to change it back to 192.168.0.1 to which I got:

  • 2 Generally, your TP-Link device won't change its gateway or IP Address unless the interface you're talking about has been changed to DHCP to receive its address automatically. Also updates won't be pushed to your device automatically - generally anyway, you'd have to update the firmware for that. So have you made any changes to any of the interfaces on the router by accident? Or do you know if anyone else has connected to your router and made the changes for you - usually there are logs on them that you should be able to see if this has happened. –  James Sep 3, 2015 at 14:57
  • @James Actually, I did change the "WAN Connection Type" from "PPPoE/Russia PPPoE" to "Dynamic IP". But, that's just the way I connect to my ISP, right? And also, I used to do switch between those modes without ever having the router's IP changed. –  Bibek_G Sep 3, 2015 at 15:03
  • Hmm, well "Dynamic IP" will definitely be the reason why it has changed, however I am not sure about why it hasn't before. The only think I can think of there is that the ISP has changed something at their end - no updates or anything like that, just an infrastructure change which would have possibly changed the gateway address. –  James Sep 3, 2015 at 15:05
  • @james: no, in this case the "dynamic IP" is for the WAN side. The router LAN interface IP will not be changed by the ISP. The only possible way the ISP might be able to change this from the WAN side is if they own this equipment and can push a firmware update or configuration file. –  Yorik Sep 3, 2015 at 19:27
  • Hmm, I am pretty sure that there was a configuration/update push from the ISP side, i.e. If you did not change any DHCP config or Your LAN config, Did you?. Yes they can push that from their end, if they have access to enter your router. Which depends whether you have changed the password which was given by them! You can check if it was really the case by checking the last reboot time/last reboot reason. Also if any logs are getting saved on the router.(oops old question, last part may not be possible to check) –  Anirudh Malhotra Oct 22, 2016 at 3:03

It could be one of the following:

Someone gained access to your router and changed the settings from inside of your network or from outside of your network. Your password could be too weak and thus allowed someone to get in by simply guessing it.

You (or someone else around) reset device to the factory default by accident.

Your device malfunctioned and reset itself to the factory default settings.

A vulnerability in your router could exist and someone used it to change configuration of your router.

Router's internal IP address is configured with DHCP and suddenly the DHCP configuration changed for some reason (it is possible, but very unlikely) - will depend on the exact model that you have.

Also can manufacturer of the router push some sort of software update to the router?

Usually firmware updates for devices like yours are published on the manufacturer's web site and users are responsible for downloading and installing them themselves. Thus it is very unlikely that manufacturer pushed some sort of update.

Does the router have some sort of operating system independently capable of doing that?

Yes, router does have some sort of operating system. And usually it should not change the settings without user interaction (unless configured to do so). But, still it could malfunction and change the settings.

  • 2 You forgot 6. Router detected default subnet (.0.1/24) was in use and automatically switched to the next available subnet, or 7. Guest wireless network configuration messes things up. –  qasdfdsaq Sep 3, 2015 at 15:17
  • I've added updates in question. Could you break that down for me? –  Bibek_G Sep 3, 2015 at 15:24
  • @coder_Bibek, It is little bit beyond the original question you asked, but here is explanation: Your proposed IP address for the default gateway is outside of the internal subnet range. If you really want to have this IP address, then try to set subnet mask 255.255.0.0 , or change internal subnet IP address to 192.168.1.0 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 –  VL-80 Sep 3, 2015 at 15:30
  • 1 Or 8. There's another router on your LAN. –  David Schwartz Sep 28, 2015 at 19:10

I have the Tp-Link router model Tl-WR1043ND Ver 1.7 with the latest firmware .

I set the lan ip address of the router at 192.168.100.254 . The DHCP is set automatically at 192.168.100.100 to 192.168.100.199 . There are 10 computers with fix ip address . 192.168.100.1 to 192.168.100.10 .

Sometimes , the router ip address change itself to 192.168.0.1 . Maybe 6 times in 2 years . The DHCP became 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199 . Now the router is not part of the local network . The router job is to connect everyone to internet . Now , nobody have internet . No emails ...

I do some maintenance on those computers from outside. There are 10 lines in the port forwarding section of the router . Those 10 lines are still there but became disable . The wifi part is OK

If I reset to factory default the router . All the configuration is lost and the router lan ip address became 192.168.1.1 not 192.168.0.1 .

I replace the router with the same model and same firmware . Same problem . At the beginning I had to go next to the router (100km away) to fix the problem . I found the remote management part in the router . Now I can fix that remotely .

The ISP is Videotron .

One cable modem connected to the router wan port . 16 ports ethernet switch connected the one lan port of the router . 10 computers and 3 network printers connected to the switch .

I don't know what to say . I thing it is a bug in the router ...

  • how do you connect to the WAN? adls.docsis...etc? –  Francisco Tapia Sep 17, 2015 at 14:04

What address does your TP-LINK router have on its WAN port? Often the "modem" you get from your ISP is not just a bridging modem but actually a full gateway that does NAT and DHCP service. If that's the case for you, and if your ISP-provided modem (really gateway) started using the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet on its LAN side, your TP-LINK device would have had to switch to a different subnet on its LAN side in order to work.

When you were using PPPoE directly from the TP-LINK box, it was probably connecting to a PPPoE server at your ISP and getting a publicly routable IP address. When you switched to "Dynamic IP", it was probably relying on your ISP-provided modem/gateway to act as a NAT gateway and DHCP server. If that ISP-provided box was already using 192.168.0.0/24 as its NAT private (LAN side) subnet, then the TP-LINK box couldn't use it, so the TP-LINK box had to switch its NAT private (LAN side) subnet to something else, and picked 192.168.1.0/24.

That's assuming your TP-LINK box was smart enough to be helpful like that. Honestly I would have expected it to just fail and force you to fix the subnet conflict yourself.

By the way, if this hypothesis is correct, then you're effectively doing "double NAT" on your network, which is fraught with problems. I recommend everyone avoid double NAT unless you really really know what you're doing. Pick whether you want your ISP-provided box or your TP-LINK box to be your NAT gateway, and configure the other box to just transparently bridge traffic.

Very simple answer, my cable router have address 192.168.0.1, you cant change that setting because provider lock router access. Automatically your wireless router adapt and change address to 192.168.1.1, and also your DHCP address range to 192.168.1.100 - 192.168.1.199. You are not hacked. If you connect router on other network and factory reset it will change back to 192.168.0.1.

How to change DNS server address on Windows 11

You can always change the DNS servers on Windows 11 for faster, more private, and secure resolvers, and here's how.

Avatar for Mauro Huculak

  • To change the DNS address on Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet and select Ethernet or Wi-Fi , open the “DNS server assignment” settings, and change the DNS address.
  • Also, on Command Prompt (admin) , you can use the “netsh interface ip set dns name=”Ethernet0″ static 1.1.1.1” command to change the DNS servers, and on PowerShell (admin) , you can use the “Set-DnsClientServerAddress -InterfaceIndex 12 -ServerAddresses 208.67.222.222” command.

On Windows 11 (or any other computing system), Domain Name System (DNS) is a technology that translates domain names (X.com) into IP addresses (104.244.42.193) that computers can understand.

Typically, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) supplies this configuration automatically to make connecting to your favorite websites and services easier. However, many other DNS resolvers on the internet are faster, more reliable, better in privacy, and more secure. Some of them include Cloudflare , Google , and Cisco .

If the current DNS servers are slow and unreliable or don’t trust your ISP system, you can change the DNS addresses on Windows 11 in at least four ways using the Settings app, Command Prompt, PowerShell, and Control Panel.

In this guide , I’ll teach you how to change the DNS servers on Windows 11.

Best DNS servers for Windows 11

Change dns servers on windows 11 from settings, change dns servers on windows 11 from command prompt, change dns servers on windows 11 from powershell, change dns servers on windows 11 from control panel.

Cloudflare, OpenDNS, and Google are among the best companies that offer fast, reliable, and secure resolvers. However, you can always use any service you want.

Cloudflare DNS addresses

Google public dns addresses, opendns by cisco dns addresses.

  • 208.67.222.222
  • 208.67.220.220

The Settings app is the best method to change the DNS servers if typing commands isn’t for you. You can also easily configure DNS over HTTPS (DoH), which offers more privacy and security using encryption for in and out DNS traffic from your computer.

To change the Windows 11 DNS address from Settings, use these steps:

Open Settings on Windows 11.

Click on Network & Internet .

Click the Ethernet tab.

Under the “DNS server assignment” section, click the Edit button.

DNS server assignment

Select the Manual option using the drop-down menu.

Turn on the IPv4 toggle switch.

Under the “Preferred DNS” section, enter the IP address of the DNS server for Cloudflare , Google , OpenDNS , or another service.

Change DNS server with encryption

(Optional) Under the “Preferred DNS encryption” section, select the “On (automatic template)” option to enable DNS encryption .

Quick note: The option to enable encryption will only be available if the service is detected by Windows 11 to support the technology.

(Optional) Turn on the “Fallback to plaintext” toggle switch.

Under the “Alternate DNS” section, specify the IP address of the secondary DNS address.

(Optional) Under the “Alternative DNS encryption” section, select the “On (automatic template)” option to enable encryption for the secondary server.

Click the Save button.

Once you complete the steps, the computer will continue to use a dynamic network address configuration, but it’ll now use the static DNS servers you specified.

The quickest way to change the DNS servers on Windows 11 is using Command Prompt, even though typing commands isn’t for everyone.

To change the DNS address with Command Prompt, use these steps:

Open Start .

Search for Command Prompt , right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command to view the current networking configuration and press Enter :

Under the network adapter section, confirm the adapter’s name and “IPv4” and “DNS Servers” addresses.

Current DNS servers

Type the following command to set the new DNS server address on Windows 11 and press Enter :

In the command, change Ethernet1  with the name of your adapter and  1.1.1.1 with the DNS server address for the service you want to use. You can also specify the address for the local DNS server (if applicable).

Type the following command to set an alternate DNS server address and press Enter :

In the command, change Ethernet1  with the name of your adapter and 1.0.0.1 with the preferred alternate DNS server address.

Command Prompt change DNS servers

Once you complete the steps, you can use the ipconfig /all command to confirm the new configuration.

You can also use the NetTCPIP module with PowerShell to manage the DNS server settings on Windows 11.

To change the DNS address from PowerShell on Windows 11, use these steps:

Search for PowerShell , right-click the result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command to view your current network configuration and press Enter :

After running the command, note the values for the “InterfaceIndex” and “DNSServer.”

Get-NetIPConfiguration

Type the following command to assign a primary DNS server address and press Enter :

Change DNS server with PowerShell

(Optional) If you need to set a secondary DNS server address, you can use the same command but add a comma and append the second address:

In the command, change the InterfaceIndex number with the one corresponding to your network adapter, and change ServerAddresses with the DNS address.

After you complete the steps, you can test the new configuration using this guide .

Alternatively, it’s still possible to use the Control Panel to change the DNS settings on Windows 11.

To change the DNS address of Windows 11 from the legacy Control Panel, use these steps:

Open Control Panel .

Click on Network and Internet .

Click on  Network and Sharing Center .

Click the “Change adapter settings” option from the left pane.

Change adapter settings

Right-click the network adapter and select the Properties option.

Select the “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” option.

Click the Properties button.

Control Panel network properties

Under the “Use the following DNS server addresses” section, specify the “Preferred DNS server,” which is the server address of Cloudflare , Google , OpenDNS , or another service.

Control Panel change DNS server

(Optional) Specify the “Alternative DNS server”  and the DNS address your device will use if it can’t reach the preferred server address.

Click the  OK button.

Click the  Close  button.

Once you complete the steps, you can use services like the DNS leak test  to confirm the new configuration.

When using Control Panel, you can specify any DNS server on Windows 11, but you won’t be able to turn on the “DNS over HTTPS” feature.

Whatever method you use, make sure to use the correct IP address for the DNS server. Otherwise, you won’t be able to connect to the internet. Also, it shouldn’t be necessary, but you can restart the computer to make sure that the new settings apply correctly.

UDM-Pro Change Default IP

I have a new site with a new UDM-Pro. It defaults to 192.168.1.1. I can’t seem to change this IP address.

From the dashboard, I click the UDM-Pro > Device > Network > change DHCP to Static

Entered 192.168.100.1. Apply, the UDM-Pro says, “getting ready” and then stays at 192.168.1.1

User: enyr0py

Turn off that "autoscale" option.  You should then have a Gateway IP/Subnet section.  That's where you want to enter the IP address you want to use - 10.0.0.1/24 or whatever.  If you use a cable modem, I'd avoid 192.168.100.1 like you mentioned above as that's usually the address you use to access the modem GUI and I'm not sure if it will cause issues if you use that address.

I think the setting for dhcp/static is for the WAN interface.

To change the LAN interface go to settings and select Networks then local networks and edit LAN. Set the desired IP address and mask and apply. the UDM will then change to that IP - so you will need to change your PC to reconnect.

i think you may have looking in to wrong place.

to change the local ip address you need to open the network app, go to settings and then go to networks.

click on the "LAN" network and from there change the local ip.

it is best to do it from the local portal and not from the cloud portal.

hope this helps.

I'm not seeing it. DHCP Gateway IP says, "if it's not a UniFi device."

How to Find and Change the IP Address on Your Mac

Quick links, how to find your ip address on a mac, how to change the ip address of your mac, how to set a manual ip address on macos, ip address conflict troubleshooting, public vs. private ip addresses on mac.

  • You can find and change your Mac's IP address through the Network panel in System Settings or by using Terminal commands.
  • Changing your IP address can help resolve network conflicts, such as when you receive an "another device is using your IP address" message.
  • If you set a manual IP, it's important to reserve this in your router to make sure your Mac consistently uses the same address.

Need to double-check your Mac's IP address or adjust it to avoid a network conflict? We'll show you how to easily find and change the IP address of your Mac.

The easiest way to check your Mac's IP address is through the Network panel in System Settings . Click the Apple menu in the top-left of your screen and choose System Settings to open it, or use Cmd + Space to search for "settings" with Spotlight.

Here, click Network from the left sidebar to open the relevant menu. Your current network shows at the top, with a green Connected dot—this is Wi-Fi , assuming you're using a wireless connection. Click the one you're using.

On the resulting page, you'll see the name of your current network at the top. Click the Details button next to this to open a new window with full information about the network.

There, you'll see an IP address field, which displays the current private IP address of your Mac on your network. For convenience, the Router 's IP address is also shown. You can select these addresses to copy and paste them elsewhere.

View Your Mac's IP Address Through the Terminal

The above method is quick and reliable, but you can also see your Mac's IP address using a Terminal command if you don't want to click through multiple menus. Open Terminal by searching for it on Spotlight ( Cmd +Space ).

Next, enter the following command to show your IP address on a Wi-Fi connection:

For an Ethernet connection, use this command instead:

Either way works; if you can memorize this handy Terminal command , it's a bit faster than clicking through the System Settings menus.

While viewing your computer's IP address is enough in some cases, what about when you need to get a new IP address on your Mac? This is necessary if you see the "another device is using your IP address" message, though you can change your IP address for other reasons too.

To change your Mac's IP address, head back to the same Network menu mentioned above. On the window where you confirmed your Mac's IP address, click the TCP/IP menu on the left. This shows more details about your Mac's current network connection. Next to Configure IPv4 , you'll probably see Using DHCP .

DHCP, or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol , allows routers to automatically manage IP addresses. This is why when you connect a new device to your network, you don't have to manually select an open IP address for it.

To get a new IP address from your router, click the Renew DHCP Lease button. This will result in your computer releasing its IP address and getting a new one, which should resolve any duplicate IP errors.

If you want more control over your Mac's network settings, you can assign an IP address manually (also called a static IP). With this option, the specified address will not change for your device, which can further help resolve issues with duplicate IP addresses.

To set a static IP address on your Mac, return to the TCP/IP tab mentioned above. In the Configure IPv4 field, click Using DHCP and change it to Using DHCP with manual address .

You can also choose Manually if you want. However, the former option is more convenient as it only has you specify the IP address, so you don't need to confirm other information like your router's IP.

Finding an Unused IP Address

When setting a manual IP, you'll need to choose an IP address that isn't already in use on your network. Otherwise, you'll create a duplicate IP problem. While you can log into your router to check IP addresses in use , it's faster to check for an open one using the Terminal.

To do so, you first need to know the IP format of your network. You'll find this on the TCP/IP tab visited earlier—the address of the Router is the format your network uses. This is often 192.168.0.X (with the last digit being unique to each device) but you should double-check what yours is.

Once you know, use Cmd + Space to open Spotlight and search for Terminal. Then enter the following command to ping an address and see if it exists on your network, replacing the address with one you want to use:

If this results in something like 64 bytes from 192.168.0.102 followed by other information, that means a device with that address exists on your network and is responding to your ping. Don't use that address for your Mac; try the ping command again with a new address until you find one that's available.

If you have lots of devices on your network, you might wish to use the arp -a command to filter out unavailable options. This displays all IP addresses on your network at once, showing what's already in use.

When your ping to an IP repeatedly shows Request timeout , you've found a free address. You can enter that IP address in the IPv4 Address field of the Network settings page. Once you do this and confirm with OK , your Mac's IP address will stay the same unless you change it.

Reserving a Manual IP in Your Router

For best results, when you set a manual IP address on your Mac, you should also reserve that address in your router. That way, your router knows that your Mac expects to always use the same address.

To open your router's management panel, open your browser and type the IP address that appears next to Router in the TCP/IP panel you used earlier. You'll then need to log in with your router admin and password, which is different than the password you connect to Wi-Fi with.

If you've never logged into your router before, check Routerpasswords.com to find the default for yours, then be sure to change it for security. And if you're not familiar with working in a router, you may want to read our general router introduction first.

IP address reservation options will differ slightly depending on your router. On my ASUS router, for instance, the relevant menu is under LAN > DHCP Server . Turn Enable Manual Assignment on, then in the box below, you can select a device and reserve an IP address for it. You don't need to change the DNS Server , but you may want to set the Host Name , Description , or similar box to remember what's what.

Given that the router identifies devices by MAC address (not related to the Mac platform), you'll need to pick out your Mac from the list. I've previously named my devices (under Network Map ) to make them easier to identify. If you're not sure which item is your Mac, you'll need to find your Mac's MAC address manually.

See our guide to static IP addresses for more help.

If you needed to change your Mac's IP address because you saw an "another device is using your IP address" error, resetting and renewing your IP address or assigning a manual IP should have fixed the problem. If not, we have a guide to fixing IP address conflicts that you should consult next.

No two devices on your network can have the same address, since your router won't know which is which. This is why you see this message, which shouldn't happen unless your router is acting up or you've manually assigned a duplicate address.

However, it can also happen if a computer is in hibernate mode for a long time; when it wakes up, it might have an old IP address that your router has since assigned to something else. In that case, releasing and renewing the address as described above should fix it.

Finally, we should quickly mention the two different kinds of IP addresses for clarity.

Everything we discussed above pertains to private IP addresses, which are used only on your network. Most home networks use the same range of addresses (often starting with 192.168.0.X ), but those values are only used by your local network. A manual (or static) private IP makes it easier to locate devices on your network by their IP addresses.

In contrast, your public IP is what the rest of the internet sees when any device on your network goes online. While you can pay your ISP for a static IP address, a dynamic public IP is fine for most people. Your public IP doesn't affect the "another device is using your IP address" error that you might see on your Mac.

To find your public IP, simply Google "what is my IP address" or visit a site like MyIP.com . We've compared public and private IPs if you'd like more info. And if you want to change your public IP, try one of the best VPN services .

We've looked at how to view your Mac's IP address, as well as changing it if needed. In most cases, you can rely on DHCP and don't need to manage IP addresses manually. While setting addresses by hand does have its uses, the increased overhead isn't worth it unless you're doing so to troubleshoot a problem.

how to change ip address back to default

I'm new to Juniper switch and I'm having trouble changing hte default Vlan (0) IP address (192.168.1.3) on a EX4200-F through the CLI.

I've tried "set interface vlan unit 0 family inet address 10.100.0.215/24" but it returns the error "incompatible with interface assigned with address".

Thanks in advance I guess I'm just usind the wrong syntax.

4.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

Cheers I'll keep that tip for future use. I tried it and it did change the IP but still didn't asign to the default Vlan.

5.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

What do you mean it's not assigned?

Can you send the relavant  'show interface vlan.UNIT' and 'show vlan <VLAN>'?

6.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

In case you didn't fix it until now, this is what you need to do:

{master:0}[edit] root@EX# delete interfaces vlan.0 family inet dhcp                    {master:0}[edit] root@EX# set interfaces vlan.0 family inet address 10.100.0.215/24     {master:0}[edit] root@EX#commit

7.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

Thanks. Worked a treat, however I still can't ping the 10.100.0.215 ip addrees.

I can however ping all the other Vlans 10.100.1.215, 10.100.2.215 and 10.100.3.215

8.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

There is no relation between vme interface being down and not being able to ping your own IP address from RVI.

Can you do 'show route 10.100.0.215' and 'ping 10.100.0.215' and send us the output?

9.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

Ok. Just dosen't make any sense! The EX4200 can ping all of its own interface IP's but the 10.100.0.215 can't be pinged from other switches in the network, but all the other Vlans 10.100.1.215, 10.100.2.215 & 10.100.3.215 can be pinged.

10.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

I see that the trunk interface from EX4200_Level_1 is configured like this:

ge-0/0/0 { unit 0 { family ethernet-switching { port-mode trunk; vlan { members all;

Is the interface from EX2200_GND_A configured in the same way?

Make sure that the trunk interfaces are configured in the same way. Also the configuration of default vlan. Seems to be some sort of tagging problem of the default vlan.

11.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

I think I know whats wrong. All the other 15 switches have had the trunk ports set with the default vlan as Native but the fibre switch hasn't.

Do you know the command/s to set the default vlan as Native on all ports?

12.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

Yes, I was suspecting that this was the problem.

You are looking for this command:

set interfaces ge-0/0/1 unit 0 family ethernet-switching native-vlan-id 1

Also, you can apply a group for all interfaces:

{master:0}[edit] root@EX# show groups NATIVE {     interfaces {         <ge-0/*/*> {             unit 0 {                 family ethernet-switching {                     native-vlan-id 1;                 }             }         }     } } {master:0}[edit] root@EX# show interfaces ge-0/0/0   disable; unit 0 {     bandwidth 10m;     family ethernet-switching; } {master:0}[edit] root@EX# show interfaces ge-0/0/0 | display inheritance disable; unit 0 {     bandwidth 10m;     family ethernet-switching; } {master:0}[edit] root@EX# set apply-groups NATIVE {master:0}[edit] root@EX# show interfaces ge-0/0/0 | display inheritance      disable; unit 0 {     bandwidth 10m;     family ethernet-switching {         ##         ## '1' was inherited from group 'NATIVE'         ##         native-vlan-id 1;     } } {master:0}[edit] root@EX#

13.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

Thanks, I'll try that in the morning, but shouldn't the native-vlan-id be 0 the match the default vlan?

14.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address Best Answer

Not sure what it should be. You have to configure it as it is on other devices. You can specify straight away the 'default' keyword. 0 is not a valid value for native vlan id. Just make sure that the port is trunk:

{master:0}[edit] root@EX# show interfaces ge-0/0/1   unit 0 {     family ethernet-switching {         port-mode trunk;         native-vlan-id default;     } } {master:0}[edit] root@EX# commit check                                                 warning: Could not connect to fpc-1 : Can't assign requested address warning: Cannot connect to other RE, ignoring it configuration check succeeds {master:0}[edit] root@EX#

15.  RE: Changing Default Vlan IP address

I couldn't wait so I just RDP into the site and tried it, all looking good now with full connectivity on all ports 0/0/0 through to 0/0/12.

Thanks so much for your help.

set interfaces ge-0/0/0 unit 0 family ethernet-switching native-vlan-id default

It appears the DHCP comment is causing me an issue.

but I get this error when i do a commit check
