First Grade math worksheets - place value models up to 20 with cubes worksheets

What is place value, and why is it important?

As earlier said, we are here to help your 1 st graders understand place value and its importance in math.

Place value is the idea that each digit in a number has a different value depending on its position. For example, in the number 23, the digit 2 has a value of 20, and the digit 3 has a value of 3.

The value of each digit is determined by the place it occupies in the number. The place value chart below shows the names and values of each place in a two-digit number.

Place value is essential because it helps us read and write numbers correctly. It also helps us compare and order numbers, add and subtract numbers, and perform other operations with numbers.

Place value also helps us understand the meaning of numbers in different contexts, such as money, time, measurement, etc. For example, if you have 23 cents, you can write it as $0.23 or 23¢. If you have 23 minutes, you can write it as 23:00 or 0:23.

Above all, place value is a foundational tool for many math and advanced math skills like regrouping, multi-digit multiplication, decimal system, etc.

How to read and write numbers in expanded form

The ability to read and write numbers in the expanded form is a brilliant and effective way to show the place value of each digit in a number .

Expanded form is a way of writing a number as a sum of its place values. For example, the number 23 can be written in expanded form as 20 + 3. To write a number in expanded form , you need to identify the value of each digit and then add them together.

Here are some examples:

To read a number in expanded form , you need to add the values of each digit and then say the number. For example, to read the expanded form 20 + 3, add 20 and 3 and then say twenty-three.

Fun and engaging activities to practice place value skills

You'll find here many engaging activities that will help you practice your place value skills and have fun at the same time.

Here are some ideas:

  • Use base ten blocks or other manipulatives to model numbers and show their place values . For example, you can use ten rods and unit cubes to show 23 as two tens and three ones.

You can roll two dice and make a two-digit number, such as 36. Then compare it with another number using >, <, or =.

  • Use a hundreds chart to find patterns and relationships between numbers . For example, you can color all ten multiples on the chart and see how they end with zero. You can also use the chart to skip count by tens or ones.

You can also write numbers in different ways using commas or decimal points. For example, you can write 23 as twenty-three or two thousand three hundred.

Place Value Charts

place value worksheet 1

Place value charts can be used to learn about place value. They might also be useful in correcting student thinking when they don't quite get the place holder concept (e.g. writing 132 as 100302 or 1004 as 14). Place value charts can also be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. For example, to add two numbers, write each addend in its own row then add starting with the lowest place, regroup and keep moving to the left until the third row shows the sum. Each place value chart includes multiple lines for this purpose. Division on a place value chart parallels the long division algorithm, so it might be a good place to go if students are struggling with long division. There are plenty of place value charts in this section with different ranges both for whole and decimal numbers.

The main difference in the decimal place value charts in this section is that a comma is used as a decimal. Many countries outside of North America use this number format.

Starting at the very beginning, students learn the names of numbers and probably how to count. They may start encountering individual numbers in writing, and learn how to identify them. Then things start getting complicated! Two- and three-digit numbers start to enter their lives and they must learn how to name those, and that is when a good knowledge of place comes in handy. In order to say the number 793, for example, children must know that the 7 is in the hundreds place, the 9 is in the tens place and the 3 is in the ones place to be able to say, "Seven hundred ninety-three."

"Determine Place and Value" worksheets are listed first in this section as they are the ones that are used most frequently. Students are asked to identify both the place and the value of an underlined digit. For example in 4 5,678, the underlined 4 is in the ten thousands place and has a value of 40,000. If students need a little more instruction to help them learn place value, the "Identify Place Only" worksheets might help. In those, students only have to determine which place is underlined. For example, in 4 5 ,678, they would say the thousands place is underlined.

There are also two worksheets for re-writing numbers with thousands separators. The first is not overly exciting, but the second also gets the student to follow a path to build the number before including the thousands separators.

Decimal Place Value Worksheets

So, you've learned all the places before the decimal, how about the ones after the decimal? These worksheets might help. Unlike the numbers before the decimal, the ones after aren't usually in groups of three, so it is necessary to count very carefully and remember that the first place after the decimal is tenths. If you have trouble, try using a place value chart. As an added bonus, students can also practice their whole number place values as every question includes an underlined whole number digit and an underlined decimal digit.

Boost Logical Thinking of Your Child

When learning counting and numbers, most kids learn the numbers without understanding how they are formed. Once the kid is familiar with the digits from 0 to 9, they can be introduced to two-digit numbers in an interactive way that enhances their thinking skills from an early age.

For them to learn how 29 is formed, help the kids understand that the number 29 includes two tens and 9 ones; that is, when one adds two groups of ten and 9 singles, then the number they will get will be 29.

Using educational manipulatives that the children can count, kids' learning experience can be enhanced. The concept of place values will help them understand how numbers such as 71 and 17 are different from each other and the value of 0 that follows any number, such as 10, 20, etc.

The Best Approach to the Concept of Place Value

When the children understand the process instead of simply learning the outcome, they can better connect with the concept. Guiding them through creating two-digit numbers can deepen their relationship with numbers and help them better understand counting. This will help them understand how three-digit and larger numbers are formed as well.

  • Manipulatives: One of the best ways through which children can learn is by doing. Manipulatives allow the kids to play while learning. Using beads, tokens, etc., and arranging them in different groups to form a particular can help the kids kick-start their learning journey towards developing understating of place values.
  • Base tens: Once the kids have understood how different numbers can be joined together in patterns to form new numbers, progress them towards using base tens and singular beads to form numbers. Guide them that the total number of base tens makes the number placed at tens place and single beads make the number placed at the unit place. The printable worksheets provided by SplashLearn can provide a perfect guideline for this task.
  • Decomposition of numbers: Now that the students have learned the concept of tens and unit place, they can decompose two-digit numbers into tens and ones. Determining the tens and ones of any number can help them apply the logic into practice. Enhance the habit of practice in children with downloadable worksheets.

Support Your Child's Journey

If the learning process is interactive, then kids are bound to delve into the concept deeply. Even first graders can be motivated towards learning by providing them incentives for educational and engaging worksheets. You can guide the child to read, compose, and decompose the numbers they find around themselves to enhance the practice of the concept.

Engage your child with SplashLearn's attention-catching place value worksheets for 1st graders that reinforce the love of learning in them from an early age. With an extensive library of worksheets and online exercises, promote your child's curiosity and thinking skills.

While there is no explicit teaching of place value this year, Year 5 introduces pupils to 5-digit numbers and 6-digit numbers (the tens of thousands and hundred thousands).

By this point children should be able to use the four operations with large numbers, including being able to mentally multiply and divide one and two digit numbers. They should also have some awareness of negative numbers, and using the four operations with them.

In Year 6, any place value work will be revision of the place value skills and topics visited in previous years. While the National Curriculum states that numbers up to 10,000,000 should be introduced this year, this should really be a case of extending pupils’ existing number sense abilities rather than teaching them something new.

10 Helpful Worksheet Ideas for Primary School Math Lessons

M athematics is a fundamental subject that shapes the way children think and analyze the world. At the primary school level, laying a strong foundation is crucial. While hands-on activities, digital tools, and interactive discussions play significant roles in learning, worksheets remain an essential tool for reinforcing concepts, practicing skills, and assessing understanding. Here’s a look at some helpful worksheets for primary school math lessons.

Comparison Chart Worksheets

Comparison charts provide a visual means for primary school students to grasp relationships between numbers or concepts. They are easy to make at www.storyboardthat.com/create/comparison-chart-template , and here is how they can be used:

  • Quantity Comparison: Charts might display two sets, like apples vs. bananas, prompting students to determine which set is larger.
  • Attribute Comparison: These compare attributes, such as different shapes detailing their number of sides and characteristics.
  • Number Line Comparisons: These help students understand number magnitude by placing numbers on a line to visualize their relative sizes.
  • Venn Diagrams: Introduced in later primary grades, these diagrams help students compare and contrast two sets of items or concepts.
  • Weather Charts: By comparing weather on different days, students can learn about temperature fluctuations and patterns.

Number Recognition and Counting Worksheets

For young learners, recognizing numbers and counting is the first step into the world of mathematics. Worksheets can offer:

  • Number Tracing: Allows students to familiarize themselves with how each number is formed.
  • Count and Circle: Images are presented, and students have to count and circle the correct number.
  • Missing Numbers: Sequences with missing numbers that students must fill in to practice counting forward and backward.

Basic Arithmetic Worksheets

Once students are familiar with numbers, they can start simple arithmetic.

  • Addition and Subtraction within 10 or 20: Using visual aids like number lines, counters, or pictures can be beneficial.
  • Word Problems: Simple real-life scenarios can help students relate math to their daily lives.
  • Skip Counting: Worksheets focused on counting by 2s, 5s, or 10s.

Geometry and Shape Worksheets

Geometry offers a wonderful opportunity to relate math to the tangible world.

  • Shape Identification: Recognizing and naming basic shapes such as squares, circles, triangles, etc.
  • Comparing Shapes: Worksheets that help students identify differences and similarities between shapes.
  • Pattern Recognition: Repeating shapes in patterns and asking students to determine the next shape in the sequence.

Measurement Worksheets

Measurement is another area where real-life application and math converge.

  • Length and Height: Comparing two or more objects and determining which is longer or shorter.
  • Weight: Lighter vs. heavier worksheets using balancing scales as visuals.
  • Time: Reading clocks, days of the week, and understanding the calendar.

Data Handling Worksheets

Even at a primary level, students can start to understand basic data representation.

  • Tally Marks: Using tally marks to represent data and counting them.
  • Simple Bar Graphs: Interpreting and drawing bar graphs based on given data.
  • Pictographs: Using pictures to represent data, which can be both fun and informative.

Place Value Worksheets

Understanding the value of each digit in a number is fundamental in primary math.

  • Identifying Place Values: Recognizing units, tens, hundreds, etc., in a given number.
  • Expanding Numbers: Breaking down numbers into their place value components, such as understanding 243 as 200 + 40 + 3.
  • Comparing Numbers: Using greater than, less than, or equal to symbols to compare two numbers based on their place values.

Fraction Worksheets

Simple fraction concepts can be introduced at the primary level.

  • Identifying Fractions: Recognizing half, quarter, third, etc., of shapes or sets.
  • Comparing Fractions: Using visual aids like pie charts or shaded drawings to compare fractions.
  • Simple Fraction Addition: Adding fractions with the same denominator using visual aids.

Money and Real-Life Application Worksheets

Understanding money is both practical and a great way to apply arithmetic.

  • Identifying Coins and Notes: Recognizing different denominations.
  • Simple Transactions: Calculating change, adding up costs, or determining if there’s enough money to buy certain items.
  • Word Problems with Money: Real-life scenarios involving buying, selling, and saving.

Logic and Problem-Solving Worksheets

Even young students can hone their problem-solving skills with appropriate challenges.

  • Sequences and Patterns: Predicting the next item in a sequence or recognizing a pattern.
  • Logical Reasoning: Simple puzzles or riddles that require students to think critically.
  • Story Problems: Reading a short story and solving a math-related problem based on the context.

Worksheets allow students to practice at their own pace, offer teachers a tool for assessment, and provide parents with a glimpse into their child’s learning progression. While digital tools and interactive activities are gaining prominence in education, the significance of worksheets remains undiminished. They are versatile and accessible and, when designed creatively, can make math engaging and fun for young learners.
