How to add custom ringtones to your iphone.

Everyone will be jealous of your sick beats! ... Okay, maybe not, but at least you'll enjoy them.

Quick links, step one: get itunes, step two: choose a sound file, step three: convert the mp3 to aac, step four: rename your aac file, step five: add the ringtone file to your phone, step six: choose the ringtone, key takeaways.

  • To add a custom ringtone to your iPhone, convert the audio file to AAC, ensure it is less than 40 seconds long, and rename the file extension to ".m4r"
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC, click the phone icon, open the "Tunes" tab, then drag the audio file into the window
  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone, then navigate to

The iPhone has been around for a long time, and yet there's still no easy way to add your own custom ringtones — but it is possible. If you don't want to buy ringtones or use the ones that came with your iPhone, you can create your own with iTunes.

This process changed a bit with iTunes 12.7 and subsequent releases. The "Tones" library you could previously sync with your iPhone has been removed, but you can still manually place ringtone files on your phone. Any ringtones you had stored in iTunes are now located at C:\Users\NAME\Music\iTunes\iTunesMediaTones on a Windows PC or ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Tones/ on a Mac.

You almost never have to use iTunes with a modern iPhone , but adding your own custom ringtones still requires it.

On a Windows PC, you'll need to install the latest version of iTunes from Apple. On a Mac, iTunes is already installed and ready to go. This process will work on either a Mac or Windows PC.

Apple no longer offers iTunes on Macs starting with macOS Catalina, so you'll need to use an alternative method to get custom ringtones onto your iPhone on newer versions of macOS . The instructions in this article still work if you're using iTunes on Windows or if you have an older version of macOS that still has iTunes. Additionally, we had some issues with the version of iTunes downloaded from the Microsoft Store, but the version available for download on the Apple website worked perfectly. If you encounter problems, try installing the version downloaded from Apple.

Of course, you'll need a sound clip you want to convert and use as a ringtone for this. You probably already have some idea of what you want to use. if not, go ahead and find something you like. You can use absolutely any sound file you find.

Your ringtone file must be a maximum of 40 seconds long. iTunes will refuse to copy ringtones longer than 40 seconds to your phone.

If the file is long and you just want to use one part of it, you can cut it down to just the part you want using an audio editor. You can use any audio editor you like. We like the free and open-source Audacity audio editor for audio editing, but it's more complex than necessary for simple things like this — so we actually recommend a simple online tool like mp3cut.net . To use this website, click the "Open file" button and browse to the MP3 or other type of sound file you want to edit. It can also extract the sound from video files if you upload those.

Click

Select the part of the audio file you want to use and click the "Save" button.

Select the portion of the audio file you want, then click

Download the edited clip to your PC by clicking "Save" again. This is the file you'll need to import into iTunes.

Click

There's a good chance your sound file is in MP3 format. You'll need to convert it to AAC format to use it as a ringtone. (If your sound file is already in AAC format or has a .m4r extension, you can skip this part.)

First, add the sound file to iTunes and locate it in your library. You can do this by dragging and dropping the file directly into the iTunes library. Look under Library > Songs for the file afterward.

Drag your audio file into itunes.

Select the sound file in iTunes and click File > Convert > Create AAC Version.

Navigate to File > Convert > Create AAC Version.

You'll end up with two copies of the same song file in your iTunes library: The original MP3 version and the new AAC version.

To keep track of which is which, right-click the headings in the library and enable the "Kind" column.

Enable the "Kind" column, which lets you sort files by file type.

You'll see a new "Kind" column telling you which file is which. The "MPEG audio file" is the original MP3, while the "AAC audio file" is your new AAC file. You can right-click the MPEG audio file version (that's the MP3) and remove it from your library if you like.

Both AAC and MPEG versions are present.

You now have your ringtone file as an AAC file. However, you need to change its file extension so iTunes will recognize it as a ringtone file.

First, drag and drop the AAC file from the iTunes library to your Desktop or any other folder on your system.

Drag the AAC version of the file to your desktop, or any other folder you want.

You'll get the ringtone file as an AAC file with the .m4a file extension . If you don't see an extension after the file name, you'll need to enable file extensions . Right-click the file, click "rename" or hit the rename button , and change the file extension to .m4r. For example, if the file is named Song.m4a, change it to Song.m4r.

Change the file extension to .m4r.

Finally, connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac with its included USB-to-Lightning cable — that's the same cable you use to charge your iPhone.

Some cheap cables may support charging but not data transfer. If you plug your iPhone into your PC and it starts to charge but nothing else happens, try a different cable.

Unlock your iPhone and tap the "Trust" option on its screen to confirm you want to trust your computer if you haven't previously connected your phone to iTunes on that PC or Mac. You'll be prompted to enter your PIN.

Tap

In iTunes, click the device icon that appears to the left of "Library" on the navigation bar.

Click the device icon.

Click the "Tones" section under On My Device in the left sidebar.

Go to the tones folder.

Drag and drop the .m4r ringtone file from its folder to the Tones section in iTunes.

If drag and drop doesn't work, use copy and paste instead. Select the ringtone file in File Explorer and press Ctrl+C, or right-click it and select copy. Next, click inside the Tones list inside iTunes and press Ctrl+V to paste it. Additionally, this part seems to break with the Microsoft Store version of iTunes. If you can't drag and drop or copy and paste the file into iTunes, try downloading and installing iTunes from Apple's website instead. Scroll about halfway down Apple's page until you see "Looking for other versions?" and then click "Windows." Click "Download" once the option appears.

Drag and drop (or copy and paste) the ringtone you made into the tones folder.

iTunes will sync the ringtone to your phone and it will immediately appear under Tones here.

The new ringtone should sync immediately.

You can now grab your iPhone and head to Settings > Sounds & Haptics, then tap "Ringtone."

The

Then choose your custom ringtone. Any custom ringtones you've added will appear at the top of the list, and all of the default ringtones will be listed below the small line.

A custom ringtone on an iPhone.

You can also assign that ringtone to a specific contact , so you know who's calling just by the sound.

To remove ringtones, reconnect your phone to iTunes and head back to the On My Device > Tones section. Right-click a tone and select "Delete from Library" to remove it from your device.

If you want to remove the ringtone, right click and click "Delete from Library."

If you're not short on space, there isn't any real need to delete the ringtones you add. You can have as many as you'd like!

What to Know

  • The simplest way to add new ringtones to your iPhone is to buy them from the iTunes Store app, but it isn’t free.
  • You can set up custom ringtones using audio clips from Apple’s Music app on your Mac computer.
  • You can also create clips using downloaded audio files in the Garageband app instead.

This article explains how to set custom ringtones on your iPhone.

How Do I Add a Custom Ringtone?

The simplest and fastest way of using custom ringtones on your iPhone is through official channels. Which is to say you pay for and download the ringtones you want directly to your iPhone from the iTunes Store app.

You'll need to ensure the iTunes Store app is installed on your iPhone before attempting anything from this section. If it's not, you can get the iTunes Store app in the App Store .

Open the iTunes Store app.

Tap More in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Tap Tones at the top of the menu.

The store includes several categories of potential tones, from music to film to sound effects. You can find what you want by browsing through the hi-lighted categories on the main page.

Or tap Genres at the top of the screen to pull up a list of all available genres (Alternative, Comedy, Dialogue, Sound Effects, etc.) and find the category that suits your needs best.

Each genre has sub-categories like New & Noteworthy , What’s Hot , and More to Explore .

Tap See All in the corner of a sub-category's associated window to explore it further.

Alternately, you can tap Search at the bottom of the screen, type in a specific title or topic, and then scroll through the results until you get to the Ringtones section.

Tap on a tone to view more details.

Tap on the tone’s name (displayed in blue) to listen before purchasing it. Or you can tap on the ringtone’s icon when in the main menu to listen to it instead.

When you’ve found the tone you want, tap the price .

A menu will appear, giving you the option to Set as Default Ringtone , Set as Default Text Tone , or Assign to a Contact . Or if you’d rather download the ringtone and not choose right away, tap Done .

A confirmation box will appear, displaying your total cost. Tap Purchase to confirm or Cancel if you’ve changed your mind.

Open your iPhone’s Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics to assign your ringtones.

Scroll down the menu to SOUNDS AND VIBRATION PATTERNS , then select the sound you want to change (in this case, Ringtone ).

Scroll through your RINGTONES list and tap the one you want to use. The ringtone will play as a preview once selected.

How Do I Put Custom Ringtones on My iPhone for Free?

You can convert songs you already have in iTunes into ringtones, but if you’re using a newer version of macOS (anything from 2019’s Catalina and up), you won’t have access to iTunes at all. Instead, you can use Music .

You must use the Music app on both your Mac to follow these steps, but you do not need to have a subscription to complete this process.

Open the Music app.

If the song or sound you want to use is already in your library, you can find it in one of the categories under Library on the left side of the screen.

If you want to use a file that isn’t loaded into your library yet, click File and then Import . Or press Command O .

Navigate to the file you want to add, select it, then click Open . You can also click on the play button on the file’s icon to listen to a preview to ensure it’s the one you want.

You’ll find the newly added file under Recently Added .

Right-click on the song and select Get Info .

Click on the Options tab in the menu, then enter the times you want the clip to start and stop in their respective boxes. Be aware the total time for the clip cannot exceed 30 seconds.

Click OK to finalize your selection.

From the clip’s info page, click on the clip to select it, then at the top of the screen, click File > Convert > Create ACC Version .

The 30 second clip will appear on the list underneath the original clip.

Once created, you’ll want to follow steps 6 through 9 to restore the original clip to its proper length. Just make sure both the Start and Stop boxes are unchecked, and it should default back to normal when you click OK .

Right-click on the 30-second clip and select Show in Finder to find the actual file on your computer. It should be using a “.m4a” file extension.

Right-click the file and select Rename .

Give the file any name you want, but make sure to change the extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r” to make sure your iPhone will recognize it .

Connect your iPhone to your Mac using the necessary Lightning or USB cable, then in Music, select your iPhone and click Sync Settings .

On the General tab, make sure Manually manage music, movies, and TV shows is on and click Apply to finish.

Go back to the folder where the new clip .m4r file is, then drag and drop it into Music , making sure your iPhone is still connected to your computer, and it’s still selected in the Music app.

The new ringtone may not appear on your iPhone’s page in Music , so go into Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone to check.

The new ringtone should appear right at the top of your list. Tap it to set it as your new ringtone, and you’re done!

How Can I Put Ringtones on My iPhone Without iTunes or Music?

Provided you already have music files you want to use or have some in mind you want to download, it’s also possible to set them up as ringtones on your phone without using iTunes or Music . First, you’ll need to download or transfer the music files to your phone with the Files app to make it work.

You’ll need to download and install both the Garageband app and the Files app from the App Store on your iPhone to follow these steps.

Open Garageband and tap Audio Recorder .

Tap View (the icon looks like a small series of horizontal lines towards the top-left of the screen).

From the new screen, tap Loop (which looks like a small loop, close to the top-right corner of the screen).

From the Files tab, tap Browse items from the Files app .

Select the file you want to use, and you’ll be taken back to the Files tab, where the selected file will now appear.

Tap and hold the song for a second or two, and it will import to Garageband .

Tap and drag along the lined bar at the top of the screen (beneath the Play and Record buttons) to set the starting point for your audio clip. Be aware the final audio clip you use for a ringtone will have to be less than 30 seconds long.

Double-tap the audio clip, tap Split and drag the scissor icon down to cut the clip at the line.

Double-tap the portion of the clip you don’t want to use and select Delete .

Tap the down arrow in the top-left corner of the screen and select My Songs .

Your clip will appear on the new screen, most likely with the title “My Song.”

Tap and hold the clip to pull up a menu, then scroll down and select Share .

Select Ringtone , then Continue .

Tap Export in the top-right corner of the screen, and Garageband will begin exporting the new ringtone for you.

Tap OK to continue, or Use sound as if you want to use the new ringtone for something specific.

If you choose the latter, you can set the new clip as a Standard Ringtone , a Standard Text Tone , or Assign to contact .

Otherwise, you can go into your iPhone’s Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone to set your new ringtone manually. It will appear in the list alphabetically as “My Song” if you didn’t change the name or under whatever name you decided to give it in Garageband .

How to set a ringtone on iPhone and how to find new ones

Leave silent behind. Here's how to set a ringtone on iPhone

A person holding a blue iPhone 13 in both hands

If you're wondering how to set a ringtone on iPhone, you're in the right place. While many of us choose to keep our phones on silent most of the time, myself included, there are often scenarios when the old-fashioned loud way just can't be beat.

If you're expecting an important call, have a busy work line or simply like hearing your phone ring, you'll of course need to be able to hear your phone ringing at all times, which means you're best off having it on loud. The thing is, if you haven't already changed it, your ringtone is probably the dull, boring Reflection tone that the iPhone ships with, and that's not cool or unique at all. Furthermore, if loads of other people also have that tone set, how can you always be sure it's your phone that's going off? You can't be.

What could be better then, than ditching the stock iPhone ringtone in favor of a cheesy synth cover of Never Gonna Give You Up or Dragostea Din Tei? That's right: nothing. So, without further ado, here's how to set a ringtone on iPhone and how to find new ones.

How to set a ringtone on iPhone and how to find new tones

Tap your preference and then tap Done . Follow the confirmation steps to verify the purchase and enter your Apple ID password if necessary.

Have you used all the default ringtones on your iPhone and want to add more? Luckily, there are lots of ways you can add more ringtones to your iPhone without a computer! This wikiHow article teaches you how to purchase ringtones from the iTunes Store app, get free ringtones from Zedge, and how to create custom ringtones with GarageBand.

Things You Should Know

  • The easiest way to add ringtones to your iPhone is to buy tones from the iTunes Store app.
  • Open the file you downloaded from Zedge in GarageBand to turn it into a ringtone your iPhone can use.
  • You can't use music that's digitally protected, like songs from Apple Music, when you create ringtones with GarageBand.

iTunes Store

Step 1 Open the iTunes Store app.

  • If you want to assign the new ringtone after you've purchased the tone, launch the Settings app, then choose Sounds & Haptics . [2] X Research source
  • Tap Ringtone , then choose the ringtone you just synced.
  • To assign the ringtone to a specific contact, open the Contacts app, select a contact, tap Edit , tap Ringtone , select your ringtone, tap Done in the top-right corner of the screen, and tap Done again to save your changes.

Zedge for iPhone

Step 1 Open https://zedge.net in...

  • Using the browser version of Zedge is more reliable than using the app.
  • This method does not require a computer or iTunes, which might be beneficial for some people.

Step 2 Find a ringtone that you like.

  • Tap the "Play" icon to preview a tone.
  • If you like a tone, tap it to open a new page. You may need to tap the tile a few times to get it to open in a new window.
  • Tap Continue next to "Use the browser" at the bottom of your screen. There's an ad at the top, so you might be tempted to tap away, but the Continue button, while greyed out, is clickable and will take you to the next step.
  • The app does not work as well as the browser for downloading ringtones, so make sure you stay in the browser instead of downloading the app.

Step 3 Tap Download.

  • Wait a few seconds for the download to start (like 10 seconds).

Step 4 Tap Download in the pop-up.

  • You'll notice that there is a "Download" icon in the top right corner of your Safari address bar. Tap it to see your downloads. You've successfully downloaded a ringtone, but it isn't set to play for anything yet. Next, you need to use GarageBand to set your ringtone.

Step 5 Open GarageBand.

  • If you don't have GarageBand, you can download it from the App Store for free.

Step 6 Tap the

  • The Tracks tab should be grey and active, if not, tap it.
  • If you don't see the different options or can't swipe left or right to see the different instruments, tap + first to create a new project.

Step 7 Tap the Project icon.

  • If the triangle icon (it looks like a metronome) is blue, tap it to make it grey.

Step 8 Tap the Loop icon.

  • You may need to tap Browse items from the Files app to find the Zedge folder.

Step 10 Long-tap your song and drag it to a new track.

  • When you drag it to your project, don't insert it into your keyboard track. Instead, add it to the next track down.

Step 11 Tap ▼.

  • If you don't want to set it, tap Done instead to keep your existing ringtone and save this project in your list of ringtones. [3] X Research source

Creating iPhone Ringtones with GarageBand

Step 1 Open GarageBand.

  • If you don't have GarageBand , you can download it from the App Store for free.
  • For this, you'll need an unprotected song, like the music you've downloaded from YouTube , or voice memos that you've recorded on your phone.

Step 2 Tap the

  • The track must be under 40 seconds long to be a ringtone. Since GarageBand doesn't track time, you'll need to be able to figure out the timing of your clip using something else as a timer.

Step 8 Tap ▼.

  • If you don't want to set it, tap Done instead to keep your existing ringtone and save this project in your list of ringtones. [4] X Research source

Yellow bar stays put

There is a yellow bar to indicate where you are inside of the selected waveform of music that fits into the time restraint of whatever type of file your making (40 sec for ringtone, 8 sec or text tone, etc.) when you play the passage it starts right where it is was last playing; this is awesome. When it cycles through the end of the selected wave form it restarts where it was last left? What the heck?! This might be useful for some folks, but it’s a buggy disaster for me trying to make a tone with any kind of speed. Perhaps, this is some thing that could be added in setting with a toggle switch? When I get to the end of my selected waveform area, I expect that it will start replaying at the beginning of the waveform area I have selected, not at the last place it was started from. Thanks guys, great app!

Developer Response ,

Hello! We are pleased to inform you that we have updated the app's user interface, fixed common problems, and improved the user experience to make it as comfortable as possible. We appreciate your support and hope you continue to enjoy using our app!

I think their hacking my phone….

Okk so before I had this app I like to go and look at ringtones but i wouldn't buy them anyway this app has ringtones that I would usually like an they're free but it's a whole process it's honestly not that bad once you understand how to download the ringtones but just a warning before u get the app youhave to have the garage band app so you can add it it's really easy and when your trying to download tones it requires you to have garage band. Also idk how to delete the tones after I've already downloaded it. One other thing I cant make my own ringtone you should definitely change the fact that we can only make ringtones if its in our library on apple music. I wanted to do a specific ringtone for my bsf but i cant bc its not a song so that was very annoying. Also your app says i payed for premium and I literally didnt i wouldn’t ever do that so either yall are hacking my phone or i just wasnt paying attention and payed for it but you need to be aware of that when you download this i think i might just delete it bc i dont want yall in my phone and taking my money so yea.💀
Hello! We're sorry to hear that you've had some difficulties with our app. We want to assure you that our app is not designed to hack your phone or charge you without your consent. Our app clearly displays all subscription-related information when offering subscriptions. As for making your own ringtones, we will certainly take your feedback into consideration for future updates. Regarding the issue of the premium account, please contact our customer support at [email protected] with your account information, and we will investigate this issue further. We hope you'll give our app another chance and let us know if there's anything else we can do to improve your experience.
I love that you can simply just use any song/audio from you music library and/or audio from a saved video but I didn’t even get to change my ringtone because when cutting the length of the audio and picking what part of it I wanted I was having trouble b/c I am VERY specific what part, when it starts, and when I want it to end but I would save it and listen to it back and it always started like a second before where I cut/placed the audio so I guess not a huge deal but this really bothered me and for the part of the song I was using I did not want it to sound choppy or come in at an awkward measure which is why I was so specific about when it started and stopped. So I thought maybe I could fix it using garage band since thats what app you need to install the ringtone anyways but for some reason garage band kept telling me it had to cut part of the song which made the placement sound worse and even more choppy so I gave up at that point.
Hello! Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We kindly ask you to contact us at [email protected] so that we can look into the matter and resolve this situation. Our support team will be able to assist you better.

Make sure to check back periodically for more iOS 17 tips and how to use new features as Apple releases more updates.

Apple's announced its 'Wonderlust\" event, scheduled to take place at its headquarters in Cupertino on Tuesday, September 12 (exactly a week away).

At the event, Apple is expected to announce several new products, including the iPhone 15 series -- but they'll also talk about iOS 17, and when it's expected to release to the general public.

But if you want to take a closer look at some of the lesser-known features and settings on iOS 17 right now, here's what you can expect.

iOS 17 has been out for over three months now, but there's always something new to discover, whether you've just received an iPhone for Christmas or been a longtime iOS user.

If you want to take a closer look at some of the lesser-known features and settings on iOS 17 right now, here's what to expect.

The verification codes you receive when attempting to sign in to your various accounts can quickly clutter up your text messages and email. Sure, you can always manually delete each code, but that takes too much time. iOS 17 now has a setting that automatically deletes your verification codes after you've entered them.

It took a while for this feature to pop up, but Apple now lets you download and use offline maps on the Maps application on iOS 17. Now you can more easily navigate roads, highways and tunnels -- even if you don't have internet.

Apple's security policies protect your personal information and data end-to-end but restrict the users to go beyond a limit. To gain more control over the iPhone and its root files, people jailbreak iPhones. This helps you get the root file access, allowing you to make desired customizations. In this tutorial, let us see the prerequisites and iOS 15 jailbreak /iPhone 15 jailbreak methods with or without a computer.

Part 1. Do You Need to Check the iOS Version of iPhone 15 Before Jailbreaking

Yes, you should check your iPhone iOS version to jailbreak the iPhone. It allows you to choose the right iPhone 15/15 Pro Max jailbreak tools. With the right tools, the jailbreaking process is a cakewalk, and without them, you may lose your data or damage the device. The idea of jailbreaking is to gain access to the root files to make modifications to the iOS.

Let us see the prerequisites one needs to follow before jailbreaking an iPhone:

  • iOS Version: Check your iOS version, as jailbreak tools are designed for specific versions, and knowing you will be very important.
  • Device Compatibility: You need to choose tools that are compatible with your iOS version.
  • Backup your data: Alwys backup your data before jailbreaking. In any emergency, you can restore the data later.
  • Disable Password and Touch ID/Face ID: Temporarily disable all the passwords and IDs before starting the jailbreak process.

Part 2. How to Jailbreak iPhone 15/15 Pro with Computer (Windows/Mac)

Most people prefer using computers (Windows/Mac) to jailbreak iPhones. Let us see the methods to do it on Windows/Mac.

1. Jailbreak iPhone 15 on Windows

WinRa1n is a Palera1n and checkra1n-based iPhone 15.7.3 jailbreak tool. It is excellent to jailbreak any iPhone, given Apple still rolls out support for the version. We will use WinRa1n to get the Palera1n loader to download the repos. Most importantly, we have to download Apple Mobile Device Drivers to connect to the iOS 15 device, as we are working with Windows. If your iPhone 15 is running iOS 17, see  How to Jailbreak iOS 17  for more information.

Step 1. Download the WinRa1n software on your PC.

Step 2. Unzip and extract the files from the  WinRa1n2.0.zip file onto the desktop.

Step 3. To establish a connection between iOS and Windows, download the AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi.

Install Apple Mobile Device Support

Step 4. Restart the Windows, and install  UsbDk_1.0.22_x64.msi  drivers for the USB support.

Install USBDK Runtime Libraries

Step 5. Open the  WinRa1n.exe or WinRa1n2.0.exe files from the desktop.

Install WinRa1n

Step 6. Connect your iPhone 15 using the USB.

Step 7. Select  Palera1n 2.0.0 Beta 7 from the interface and click Next.

Step 8. Follow the on-screen instructions, and click Jailbreak once you enter one of the Normal/Recovery/DFU modes on the iPhone.

Step 9. With the on-screen instructions, get the Palera1n loader on your home screen and install the packages.

2. Jailbreak iPhone 15 on Mac

Checkra1n is similar to what WinRa1n is. It is quite popular and allows you to jailbreak iPhone 15 Pro with ease. Before moving forward, you need to update the Mac and iPhone to their latest versions and keep a lighting cable handy. Make sure you have disabled the screen passcode before starting this.

Step 1. Install Checkra1n on your Mac.

Step 2. Connect the iPhone 15/15 Pro to the Mac with a lightning cable.

Step 3. Launch Checkra1n, and click Start to initiate the jailbreaking process.

Start the Checkra1n app

Step 4.  The software shows the instructions on the screen, and you have to follow them to put the iPhone into the Recovery Mode and click  Next .

Enter the recovery mode

Step 5. Here, you have to put the iOS 15 device into recovery mode, click Start , and follow the instructions.

Put the device into DFU mode

Step 6. After putting the device in the DFU mode, the Checkra1n app starts jailbreaking the iPhone. Click on Done at the button to complete the process.

Click Done
