  • Introduction

We all have some the other responsibilities in life that we need to fulfill. English language as everyone in this world would agree is a complex language with a lot of grammatical arrangements. Without the proper usage of grammar, it would hardly make sense and sentences could get completely wrong. The English language is very diverse and has thousands of words that mean different things. But some words have similar meanings yet are significantly different. An example of such words is Tasks and Duties, if looked at with a normative eye; one would think that the two terms have the same meanings. But these two terms are considerably different if seen with a critical eye. A task is a chunk of work that is done as a part of a person's responsibility that is included in it. Duties are compulsory or obligatory for a person to do.

  • Tasks vs. Duties

The main difference between these two terms is that "task" is a part of our life or a job that is assigned to us. Whereas "duty or duties" is a responsibility a task that a person is obliged to complete no matter what.

Some examples that could explain this better would be studying or giving good education, food, shelter to children is the duty of every adult who has kids. A task can be something easy or difficult depending on the scale of the assigned work. Some examples would be doing the dishes, cooking a meal, mopping the floor, or bigger tasks like managing an event, etc. while this may sound a little confusing the below table will help distinguish between these two terms more clearly.

  • Difference Between Tasks and Duties in Tabular Form
  • What are Tasks?

A task is an everyday occurrence in our life. Work is derived from the Latin word "Taxare," which means "to impose taxes," which is comparable to filling out tax reports, which are many times called occupations. When speaking in formal terms, a task is one that must be accomplished within a specific time frame or deadline. A task can also be divided into assignments if it is used in an office, corporation, or educational institution. It is usually a part of a larger project. Talking about simple tasks like doing home chores really can't be divided into assignments. As a task requires completion within a given deadline of the fixed time, it requires a certain amount of coordination with others if working in a team or group. Even doing tasks alone, requires to resolve, and concentration to sit and complete the work. Tasks are usually difficult or unpleasant to complete.

Some examples of tasks used in sentences that will make it clearer to understand;

  • The students were given the task of cleaning the classrooms.
  • In, football every player has a task to do.
  • I have some tasks to complete for this assignment.

The task is also used as a transitive verb

  • The people were tasked to clean their locality

There is a distinction to be made between a responsibility and a task. "Take part in teamwork," for example, is a duty; "attend staff meetings" is a task. "Communication with clients" is a duty; "monthly magazine writing" is a chore. "Obtaining market exposure" is a duty; "publish articles for trade publications" is a task. "Create media contacts" is a duty; "produce news releases" is a job.

Many synonyms have also been derived from the word task like

  • Chore, which means a piece of work, which can be difficult with the objective of achieving a goal.
  • Multitasking is doing multiple tasks at the same time.
  • Subtask, it's a portion of a supplementary multifarious task.
  • A task force is a unit that is set up for a task.
  • Taskmaster is a person who is assigned to give tasks, responsibilities, and mainly difficult ones. They also supervise the work rigorously.
  • Take to task
  • What are Duties?

Duty has been derived from the old French word "Deu" which means "owing." Duty is an obligation or a commitment to something, someone, or yourself. It is an expectation to do an activity by default which means that usually, no one assigns someone work to do. It's a universal thing that is done by people. Morals, respect, and ethics can be labeled as duties. As it denotes moral obligation, it signifies an active emotion of doing something. Once a person engrosses themselves with some duty or they have been delegated with a duty, then that person effusively obligates himself to it. Duties would be something that is created by law, which is mentioned in constitutions all around the world in an organized manner. Sometimes not doing these duties can also lead to punishment.

In the instance of duty, a person will be immersed in the work without regard for his or her own self-interest. A person's obligations as a citizen are numerous. They must adhere to the provisions of the constitution. Everyone has fulfilled the job and responsibility standards. Duty is a moral commitment to something or someone, but on the other hand responsibility is a circumstance of being responsible for something. Duties are derived from four components, according to Cicero. Human beings, one's specific place, one's character, and one's moral expectations all contribute to duty. In his classic piece 'On duty,' he presented his obligation concept. Duty, as it pertains to moral commitment, represents an active experience of doing something. When a person participates in a task or is entrusted with a duty, that person completely commits to it. In the event of duty, the person will be engaged in an action that is not motivated by self-interest. A person's responsibilities as a citizen of a country are numerous. They must follow the constitution.

Responsibilities and duties are fairly similar, even though the fact that they are completely distinct. An obligation may be defined as a person's ability to do anything they choose, without being told. It is a person’s responsibility to accomplish the project that has been sent to them. With responsibility, one takes on the task of completing and completing the assignment successfully. A person is solely accountable for all work and its consequences. If you have a duty, you are responsible for the entire project. Responsibility may also be described as a set of life principles that one should adhere to. It is the responsibility of the parents to give decent education to their offspring.

Relation and contrast between responsibility and duty are mentioned in the below sentences:-

The following statements illustrate the relationships and parallels between responsibility and work: -

  • Work is a moral commitment to something or someone, whereas responsibility is a state of responsibility.
  • Because work is a moral commitment, it demonstrates a practical feeling of success.
  • If it is a job, the individual will be immersed in the task without regard for self-interest.
  • Work is defined as the ability to behave deliberately and independently. It is the obligation to complete the mission that has been sent to you.
  • By committing, a person accepts responsibility for all labor and its consequences. Like Parents should ensure that their children receive a proper education, or they get adequate medical attention when they are not well.
  • Once a person is actively involved in a task or has been assigned a task, he or she is dedicated to it.

Some examples of duties that are performed by people:-

  • A care nurse's role in a hospital
  • It is a doctor's responsibility to attend to his patients.

1- A tour of duty is a term used to describe active military service.

  • Moral or legal compulsion: It is your responsibility to speak the truth.
  • Taxes levied by the government and levied on citizens
  • The request for something for a certain function; the drawing-room table also serves as a workstation.
  • An amount of proficiency is articulated as the extent of effort done per unit of vigor used.
  • The total amount of water necessary to irrigate a certain area to develop a specific crop from planting to harvest.

The act of performing duties can include one's self-interest or even numerous sacrifices also. According to a roman philosopher, duties come from different sources:

  • “A result of being a human."
  • “A result of one's character."
  • "A result of one's moral expectation."
  • "A result of one's particular dwelling in his or her life."
  • Main Differences between Tasks and Duties in Points
  • It is well understood that the main distinction between the two is that a task is something that a person is assigned or asked to do for a specific period of time and possibly in exchange; on the other hand, duty is something that a person is not asked to do but is obligated to do because he is responsible for his actions.
  • The job is little in comparison to the work to be completed in the allowed time. And duty is the employee's responsibility to execute or fulfill specific responsibilities and duties such as a duty.
  • Once a person accepts or is entrusted with a duty, he or she is committed; the labor is temporary, and the individual needs simply to perform what is asked.
  • They then engage in such activities without regard for themselves. A person has numerous obligations as a citizen of a country, yet in occupations, people are simply interested in their gain.
  • Tasks must be pretty direct and completed on time, yet the work is deemed routine.

From the aforementioned article, it should thus be concluded that Tasks and duties are two different nouns with completely dissimilar connotations. The difference between the two pivots on the question of "why did I do this" the responsibility in a task is always high. One responsibility can carry up to five to six tasks. If one is to eliminate one task from the responsibility then that could lead to the deduction of several tasks. Whereas a task is a piece of work performed as part of one's obligation, a responsibility is something that someone is forced or required to complete, and it is something that morally binds a person. Tasks are more particularly since the individual knows what he has to do and when he needs to do it, whereas duties are thought to be generic and are quite similar to responsibilities. Tasks have a definite and restricted period in which they must be accomplished, whereas duties are thought to be a long-term assessment that does not have a time restriction.

Generally speaking, a task is something that a person is assigned or has been asked to do by others, and that is needed to be done for some practical or logical reason till the given period.

A task can be as easy as a chore like cooking, cleaning, or laundry and as challenging as writing an essay or sending invitations.

While duty, on the other hand, is something a person is supposed to do as that is the right and the critical thing to do, it is something that a person is morally obliged and obligated to by himself. In contrast, duty is a moral obligation. Like if you are a parent, you must raise your children fine.

Comparison Table

tasks

What are Duties?

A duty is a commitment to someone or yourself or an expectation to perform some activity in general or when a particular situation arises. It can be raised from some ethics or a system of basic morality.

Many duties are created by the law, too, that are mentioned n the law in a codified way, and citizens are obliged to do those duties. These duties include codified punishments for not following the rules or not performing what is being asked.

This whole act of performing duties may include one’s self-interest or even some sacrifice. According to some Roman philosophers, assignments come from four different sources:

  • As a result of being human.
  • As a result of one’s character.
  • As a result of one’s moral expectations.
  • And as a result of one’s particular place in their life.

duties

Main Differences Between Tasks and Duties

  • As from the discussion so far, it is known that the main difference between both the nouns is that task is something a person is assigned or been asked to do for a certain period and maybe even for something in return, While duty, on the other hand, is something that a person is not asked for but is obliged to do as a responsibility in the form of their morality.
  • The task is a comparatively more minor part of the job that has to be performed within a deadline. And duty is a liability upon an employee to perform or do some specific tasks and roles more like a responsibility.
  • Once a person engages with duty, or he/she has been entrusted with some duty, then they are committed to it entirely, while the task is for a limited period and the person is supposed to do;y what he/she has been asked for.
  • They are then involved in those activities without much self-interest. Like a citizen of a country, a person has several duties to perform for which he/she is bound to do, but for tasks, people are involved only for their self-interests.
  • Tasks are supposed to be more specific for a specific period, but duty is assumed to be general.

duty or task

On the other hand, the responsibility is undertaken, i.e. something which a person has to take care of or handle. When a person is responsible for something, he/she becomes the one to be held accountable for or blamed for its performance and completion or non-completion. In this article we are going to talk about the difference between duties and responsibilities, have a look.

Content: Duty Vs Responsibility

Comparison chart, definition of duty.

Duty can be defined as a moral, legal, or professional obligation which a person is bound to do, otherwise, he/she has to face certain punishment or penalty. It determines what a person should have done in the normal course of action in general or in specific circumstances.

The law governing the country has specified certain duties which must be followed by every citizen. It exhibits an invisible force which binds a person to do something which is considered right in the eyes of law, whose non-performance may result in fine or punishment.

Duty is the obligatory task, conduct, work or service, that emerge out of an individual’s position, occupation or role.

In management, the word ‘duty’ is used to define the tasks or functions which an employee has to perform, as it is a part of his/her job.

In economics, duty is described as a form of tax levied by the government on the goods purchased from or sold to foreign countries. The non-payment of such taxes may result in a penalty to the exporter or importer.

Definition of Responsibility

Responsibility refers to a state of having some authority or obligation to undertake a task satisfactorily which has been assigned by someone who is superior or elder, so as to attain the desired results. It is required to be undertaken as a part of a job or role.

It makes a person answerable or accountable for the completion of the task, or safekeeping of valuables/cash, or protection of a person. Hence, the person who accepts the responsibility has to be ready to bear the consequences, for his/her actions or decisions taken in this regard, which may be positive or negative.

Responsibility often comes with the authority to give directions and take relevant actions when required. When authority is delegated to a person, he/she becomes responsible for its performance and the optimum use of the delegated authority.

It reflects the trust of the person delegating the authority on the person to whom it is delegated, that the task will be completed accordingly.

Key Differences Between Duty and Responsibility

The points given below are substantial so far as the difference between duty and responsibility is concerned:

  • Duty refers to the legal or moral obligation, or commitment towards certain work, which you are expected to perform, in general, or special circumstances. On the contrary, responsibility refers to the liability that requires fulfilment which is either assumed, voluntarily accepted or promised, by an individual, inherent to his/her job or role.
  • Duties show a hidden binding force that impels a person to do a certain act, which is regarded as the right thing to do in a particular situation. As against, responsibility brings authority, i.e. the power to take necessary decisions and actions and give proper directions for the successful completion.
  • Duties exhibits respect, sincerity, of the person towards the work (task), elders and superiors and obedience. Conversely, Responsibility gives birth to accountability, i.e. acceptance of certain responsibility by a person makes him/her accountable for its performance.
  • Duty requires the sacrifice of self-interest by the person to whom it is ascribed. In contrast, responsibility demands trustworthiness and loyalty, i.e. the person to whom the responsibility of a certain task is given must be trustworthy and loyal to perform the tasks as required.
  • Duties are imputed on a person, either naturally or out of the role/position he occupies. On the other hand, responsibility is nothing but demanded duties, which are shouldered on a person who is competent and conscientious enough to handle it.

Duty brings responsibility, i.e. when you say it is your duty, it indicates that you ought to do that because you are responsible for that act if it is not done properly, within the reasonable time. It requires allegiance on the part of the concerned individual, for the discharge of duties and responsibilities successfully.

  • Concept of Responsibility

The term responsibility has two different senses in management literature. Some writers explain it as a duty or task which assigned to a subordinate on the basis of his position in the organization. Responsibility is also the obligation of an individual to perform the duty or task assigned to him. Let us understand what is responsibility and its characteristics in a detailed manner.

Browse more Topics under Organising

  • Intro to Organisation and its Importance
  • Types of Organisation
  • Organisation Structure
  • Decentralisation

Responsibility refers to an obligation to perform certain functions in order to achieve certain results. Following are the main characteristics or features of responsibility:

  • An organization can assign responsibility to human beings only and not to any non-living objects such as a machine, equipment, etc.
  • It arises from a superior-subordinate relationship. A senior possesses the authority to get the required task done from his subordinates. Thus, for this purpose, he assigns duties to subordinates. The subordinates are under a duty to perform the work assigned to them.
  • The management can confine it to the performance of a single function or can be a continuing obligation.
  • We can also define it in terms of functions, targets or goals. When responsibility is expressed in terms of targets, it enables the subordinates to know by what standards their performance shall be evaluated.
  • The core of responsibility is the obligation of a subordinate to perform the duty or task which the superior assigns to him.
  • Responsibility is coextensive with authority. When a superior delegates authority to his subordinate, the latter becomes responsible to the former for the performance of the task and also for proper use of authority. Thus, responsibility is a derivative of authority.
  • Responsibility is absolute and one cannot delegate it. A subordinate to whom his superior assigns a task, may himself perform it or may get it done from his own subordinate. But, in both cases, he shall only remain responsible to his superior.
  • It always flows upward. A subordinate will only be always responsible to his superior.
  • Accountability arises out of responsibility. The person who accepts responsibility is also accountable for his performance. However, the management can use various techniques to define responsibilities in order to involve members of an organization in its coordination effort.

Solved Example on Concept of Responsibility

What are the techniques that the management uses to define the responsibilities in an organization?

The two such techniques are:

1. Responsibility Charting: A responsibility chart is a manner of summarizing the relationship between tasks and task performers. It lists the complicated activities or the decisions that need to be made and the individuals who are responsible for each of them. The organization needs to show the tasks on the vertical axis and the task performers on the horizontal axis.

However, the following four roles are very important:

  • An individual is responsible for the activity or the decision.
  • He shall approve the activity or decision.
  • The management shall consult him before completing the activity or making the decision.
  • The management needs to inform an individual about the activity or the decision.

  2. Role Negotiation: It is an important technique and can supplement the use of responsibility charting. The basis of the technique is that nobody gets anything without promising something in exchange. Members of the organization list the re-allotment of tasks at periodic intervals in order to maximize coordination.

The main aim of this approach is the identification of the independent clusters of tasks completed by the organization. It also aims at matching the personal needs and works preference of individuals with the tasks that need to be completed.

Marine Drill Instructors and Recruiters among special duty award winners

The special duty assignment, or "as recruiters, drill instructors, combat instructors, or Marine security guards.

By Patty Nieberg | Published Feb 14, 2024 5:50 PM EST

Eight Marines received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for their exceptional performance in their respective special duty assignments, ir B-billets, as recruiters, drill instructors, combat instructors and Marine Security Guards. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Ethan Miller.

Four Marines were named the top performers across the service’s special duty ranks, which includes drill instructors, recruiters, combat instructors and Marine security guards. The four were recognized at a ceremony at the National Museum of the Marine Corps just outside Washington, D.C.

The four Marines, along with four others chosen as runners-up for each job, were awarded Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals by the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Christopher J. Mahoney for “work that surpassed their peers.”

Special duties, or “B billets” as they are commonly known, are a right of passage for most Marines who stay in uniform into the service’s upper enlisted ranks. Regardless of their primary job, Marines from every corner of the Corps can apply for special duty assignments as recruiters, drill instructors, combat instructors or Marine security guards.

Three B billet positions are among the most recognizable roles in the Corps, staffing the positions that turn civilians into Marines. Recruiters work in the civilian world, looking for qualified candidates to enlist. Drill instructors train raw recruits through the Corps’ famously tough boot camp at one of two recruit depots. Combat instructors are assigned to one of the Corps final combat schools to train recruits on the basics of infantry and other combat skills before they are assigned to the fleet for expeditionary combat operations.

Marine security guards take on another high-visibility role as specially trained guards at U.S. Embassies and Consulates around the world. An MSG assignment that generally sends a Marine to tours at three foreign posts where they both provide security to diplomatic staff and serve as a symbolic military presence at U.S. embassies.

U.S. Marine Corps Gen. Christopher J. Mahoney, assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, left, awards Gunnery Sgt. Bryan V. Labiosa, a drill instructor with Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, as the Drill Instructor of the Year during the Fiscal Year 2023 Commandant’s Combined Awards Ceremony at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle, Virginia, Feb. 8, 2024. The eight winners and runners-up were honored at the Commandant’s Combined Awards Ceremony at the museum in Triangle, Virginia. The eight Marines were:

  • Recruiter of the Year Gunnery Sgt. Russell B. Cowan with Recruiting Station San Diego, California, and runner-up Gunnery Sgt. Tristan R. Wiggin with Recruiting Station Tampa, Florida. The two were chosen from among 3,200 Marine recruiters.

“These recruiters are the hunter-gatherers,” Mahoney said, “they are the ones who go out and sell inspiration to the best of America’s youth.”

  • Drill Instructor of the Year Gunnery Sgt. Bryan V. Labiosa from Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, and runner-up Staff Sgt. Jonathon R. Savage from MCRD San Diego.

“They take what the hunter-gatherers bring,” Mahoney said. “They build it into the Marine Corps ethos of honor, courage and commitment.”

  • Marine Combat Instructor of the Year Gunnery Sgt. Jose R. Acevedo Jr., from the School of Infantry-East and runner-up Gunnery Sgt. Russell M. Regehr from School of Infantry-West. The two were selected from 791 combat instructors.

“They put truth to the maxim, ‘every Marine is a rifleman,’” Mahoney said. “They solve the victory equation: skill [multiplied by] will, times drill equals kill.”

  • Marine Security Guard of the Year Gunnery Sgt. Matthew M. Kinsman at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia and runner-up Gunnery Sgt. Trevor J. Bowen at Marine Corps Embassy Security Group, Beijing, China. The two were recognized out of 1,629 Marine security guards on duty in 137 countries around the world.

“They are a symbol of the strength of the United States all around the world,” Mahoney said.

Bowen told the service that credit for his award belongs with Marines he works with.

“It’s also about my Marines and the Marines that we have out on the Marine Security Guard program right now. Without them and without them doing their job and being excellent, I would not be here today,” he said.

Lawmakers revise Kids Online Safety Act to address LGBTQ advocates’ concerns

duty or task

The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) is getting closer to becoming a law, which would make social platforms significantly more responsible for protecting children who use their products. With 62 senators backing the bill, KOSA seems poised to clear the Senate and progress to the House.

KOSA creates a duty of care for social media platforms to limit addictive or harmful features that have demonstrably affected the mental health of children. The bill also requires platforms to develop more robust parental controls.

But under a previous version of KOSA, LGBTQ advocates pushed back on a part of the bill that would give individual state attorneys general the ability to decide what content is inappropriate for children. This rings alarm bells in a time when LGBTQ rights are being attacked on the state level, and books with LGBTQ characters and themes are being censored in public schools. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), who introduced the bill with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), said that a top priority for conservatives should be to “protect minor children from the transgender [sic] in this culture,” including on social media.

Jamie Susskind, Senator Blackburn’s legislative director, said in a statement, “KOSA will not — nor was it designed to — target or censor any individual or community.”

After multiple amendments, the new draft of KOSA has appeased some concerns from LGBTQ rights groups like GLAAD , the Human Rights Campaign and The Trevor Project; for one, the FTC will instead be responsible for nationwide enforcement of KOSA, rather than state-specific enforcement by attorneys general.

A letter to Senator Blumenthal from seven LGBTQ rights organizations said: “The considerable changes that you have proposed to KOSA in the draft released on February 15, 2024, significantly mitigate the risk of it being misused to suppress LGBTQ+ resources or stifle young people’s access to online communities. As such, if this draft of the bill moves forward, our organizations will not oppose its passage.”

Other privacy-minded activist groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Fight for the Future are still skeptical of the bill, even after the changes.

In a statement shared with TechCrunch, Fight for the Future said that these changes are promising, but don’t go far enough.

“As we have said for months, the fundamental problem with KOSA is that its duty of care covers content specific aspects of content recommendation systems, and the new changes fail to address that. In fact, personalized recommendation systems are explicitly listed under the definition of a design feature covered by the duty of care,” Fight for the Future said. “This means that a future Federal Trade Commission (FTC) could still use KOSA to pressure platforms into automated filtering of important but controversial topics like LGBTQ issues and abortion, by claiming that algorithmically recommending that content ’causes’ mental health outcomes that are covered by the duty of care like anxiety and depression.”

The Blumenthal and Blackburn offices said that the duty of care changes were made to regulate the business model and practices of social media companies, rather than the content that is posted on them.

KOSA was also amended last year to address earlier concerns about age-verification requirements for users of all ages that could endanger privacy and security. Jason Kelley, the EFF’s activism director, is concerned that these amendments aren’t enough to ward off dangerous interpretations of the bill.

“Despite these latest amendments, KOSA remains a dangerous and unconstitutional censorship bill which we continue to oppose,” Kelly said in a statement to TechCrunch. “It would still let federal and state officials decide what information can be shared online and how everyone can access lawful speech. It would still require an enormous number of websites, apps, and online platforms to filter and block legal, and important, speech. It would almost certainly still result in age verification requirements.”

The issue of children’s online safety has stayed at the forefront of lawmakers’ minds, especially after five big tech CEOs testified before the Senate a few weeks ago. With increasing support for KOSA, Blumenthal’s office told TechCrunch that it is intent on fast-tracking the bill forward.
