Static IP Address on Synology NAS | Setup Tutorial

Static IP address settings for Synology NAS

Setting up a Static IP Address on Synology allows for your NAS to stay at same IP address on your network. This alleviates the headache of having to find the new IP address of your NAS every time it reboots when you want to connect to it from your computer.

Table of Contents

Background:

There are two different ways to get a static IP address from your router: either through the NAS itself or using DHCP reservations. This tutorial will show you how to do the setup through the NAS itself. DHCP reservations are setup via your router and will be the subject of a future tutorial.

Static IP addresses are easy to setup, however they can cause issues if the IP address you choose is not available on the network. There are two possible reasons why it would not be available:

  • The router has given the IP address away to another device that DSM is requesting
  • The networks subnet has changed

To combat the first case, you should set your router never to give away the IP you will be setting. The way that I do this is I set my router to give away addresses between 192.169.1.2-192.168.1.100, and then I set my static IP address above 192.168.1.100. Most routers will allow you to setup your network like this, and it is most likely under “DHCP” in your routers settings.

The second case is not likely to cause an issue unless you decide to change your router’s subnet. It tends to be an issue primarily with mobile devices such as laptops, which will be connecting to many different network setups. If you do decide to change your network’s subnet, just be sure to enable DHCP first.

In order to setup a static IP address, first login to DSM and open up the Control Panel. From Control Panel, select “Network” as shown below:

Network Control Panel on Synology

From within network settings, navigate to the tab “Network Interface” where you should see a list of your network interfaces. Select the interface to which you would like to assign a static IP address. Click Edit.

Select your network interface and click edit

You will then see a menu where you can edit the connection properties. Select “Use manual configuration”, and set your static IP address as well as the configuration. If you are not sure what your settings should be, DSM pre-populates them with what it used for the DHCP connection, so they should be correct. Once you’ve set your static IP address, select OK.

Static IP address settings for Synology NAS

If you are changing the IP address, the web server for DSM will restart and become unresponsive. You should navigate to the IP address that you just setup, where you will find your DSM login screen. Note this can take up to 5 minutes. You now have an assigned static IP address.

Setting up a static IP address on Synology is a great way to ensure that your NAS is always at the same address on your network! But they can easily become a headache if you allow your router to give away the address your NAS plans to take. Be sure to tell your router not to give away the IP address you want!

Synology: How to Assign Static IP to Your NAS

Synology How to Assign Static IP to Your NAS

It’s a good practice to set up a Static IP for your Synology NAS. You’ll find it easier to locate shared devices in your internal/local area network and your fixed LAN IP address will prevent your NAS from floating around your network. I always see a Synology NAS device as a server for which it would be good to have a static LAN IP address. Setting up a static IP address for your Synology NAS will prove useful in many circumstances such as, for example, when you are using the Docker package for different containers . Today I will teach you how to assign a static IP to your Synology NAS.

Please Support My work by Making a Donation .

Go to Control Panel / Network / Network Interface . Select Bond 1 if you have activated Link Aggregation or LAN 1 then click on Edit . Follow the instructions in the image below.

1 Synology Assign Static IP to Your NAS

After you click Edit, the window below will open. Click on  IPv4  and check “ Use manual configuration “. On the IP address area type in your preferred static local IP address, then press OK  to save the settings. From now on your NAS will use the new IP instead of the one assigned to it automatically by DHCP. Follow the instructions in the image below.

2 Synology Assign Static IP to Your NAS

Note : Pay attention to the local IP address you choose for your Synology NAS device. Make sure it’s not already being used by another device in your local network area. Each device in your local network area should have a unique static IP address. Note : I always set up a static IP for every Synology NAS in my local area network using manual configuration.

Tip: Synology NAS basics – Static IP Address

After recently buying my second Synology NAS it occurred to me that i have never really explained how to to some basic first setup type things, most of which i assume have been done in my other tutorials.

Setting a Static IP

how to assign static ip address to synology nas

  • Select Lan 1 and press Edit

how to assign static ip address to synology nas

  • Press Ok and wait a little bit for your NAS to process to the changes. Then head to the new address. Thats it, Your done
  • If you don’t know your gateway then open the start menu in windows and type CMD, press enter
  • In the Command prompt enter ipconfig and press enter

how to assign static ip address to synology nas

  • So here the details would be Gateway: 192.168.1.1 DNS:  192.168.1.1
  • If you dont know where your DHCP server range starts the it is best to choose a high number for the Synology IP address. For example IP: 192.168.1.234
  • So now head back to step 4 and enter the details.

how to determine the address of a Synology NAS, and will it be persistent?

I am considering buying the Synology DiskStation DS115j after discussion at my previous question ( how can NAS work if it is not connected to Internet? ). Before I did that, I wanted to read through instructions about how to set it up with Mac's Time Machine, to make sure it would be easy. I found the instructions here: https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/Backup_Restore/How_to_back_up_files_from_Mac_to_Synology_NAS_with_Time_Machine

The instructions are pretty straightforward but there is one unsettling part: search for "Enter the address of your NAS server." Basically it seems that to connect one's Mac to the Synology NAS, you have to provide an IP address.

First of all, they don't explain how to determine the IP address of your Synology NAS. How do you do that? Second of all, a bigger concern is that if I'm not mistaken, that IP address can change whenever the NAS reconnects to the router (for example, if you restart your router). Doesn't that mean that your Mac's connection to the Synology NAS would break whenever either the router or the NAS is restarted, since it is based on this IP address?

Try find.synology.com from a browser and it should find the NAS for you.

You have 3 options.

1) Check your router's DHCP table for the address assigned.

2) Configure the device with a static IP

3) Set up a static DHCP assignment on your router

You're right as to the fact that it's possible the NAS will grab a new IP address with method 1. But most likely that's not going to happen if you have a small network.

I'd say that best method is to use 2 and remember the address. Just be sure to give it an address outside of the DHCP scope.

  • Do you know how I would be able to configure it with a static IP? Is that something that is typically available using NAS software? –  Stephen Sep 19, 2018 at 1:07
  • It would be somewhere in the synology setup app / webpage. I don't have one of these devices so I cant specifically tell you. Just be aware that if you put in wrong settings you'll lose network communication with the device. You may want to email Synology support or check their site/manuals first. –  Hefewe1zen Sep 19, 2018 at 1:23

Synology provides a utility called SynologyAssistant (Windows and MacOS) that shows you all Syno devices connected to your network and their ip-addresses. Through this utility you can also connect to the web-based management interface of the NAS and (in case the NAS isn't setup yet) push the latest firmware version to the NAS.

When you get into the NAS you can configure the ip-address to a static fixed ip-address. Or you connect to your router and in the router you configure a so-called static DHCP mapping (refer to the manual of your router for how to do that) so the router always assigns the same ip-address to the Synology. Static DHCP mapping is the method I use for my devices:

Setup a Static IP Address for OpenVPN Clients on your Synology NAS!

  • Post author: WunderTech

  • Reading time: 10 mins read

Today we are going to look at how you can setup a static IP address for OpenVPN on a Synology NAS.

When you setup a VPN server on your Synology device, the IP addresses are dynamic when a user connects. What this means is that every user will have a different IP address when they connect and the order in which they connect determines what the address will be. In other words, it’s totally random. There are many cases where using a static IP address is necessary, and today we are going to go through the process of configuring this.

If you have not configured your VPN Server, you must do it before proceeding. I have instructions on how to do it here .

Setup a Static IP Address for OpenVPN on a Synology NAS – Instructions

  • First off, you need to be able to SSH into your Synology device. If you aren’t sure how to do that, you can watch this quick 90 second video that shows you how .
  • SSH into your Synology NAS and navigate to the VPNCenter folder by running this command:

3. At this point, we need to create a directory which is where we will store our users and their predetermined IP addresses. Run this command to create a folder.

creating directory in synology dsm through ssh

4. Now that this directory is created, we need to give users the rights to execute items in this folder by running the command below. If you’d like to read more about what permissions this command grants, you can do so  here .

changing file permissions on newly created folder

5. The next step involves reconfiguring the OpenVPN configuration file to check our newly added folder for files. Run these commands to navigate to the folder and edit the configuration file.

6. When you have the configuration file open, add the line below inside of the file. NOTE: you will need to use vi to edit this file. If you aren’t sure how to use the vi editor, check out this tutorial . In its simplest form, press “i” to insert and when the line is entered/changed, press “Escape” to stop editing, then type “:wq” to quit.

editing openvpn config file

7. After the file has been saved, navigate to the radiusplugin.cnf folder by typing this command:

8. Edit the radiusplugin.cnf file by typing this command. See instructions above on how to use the vi editor.

updating radius plugin file

9. Change the “true” flag to “false” for “overwriteccfiles”.

overwriteccfiles changes to false

10. The server configuration is now complete. The final step is to determine which VPN users should have static IP’s and create a file letting the system know what IP address should be assigned to that user account. The file name must be the EXACT username that will be connecting to the VPN (in my case, vpnUser1 and vpnUser2). Another important note is that when you configured your VPN server, you defined a dynamic IP address that is the IP address that will be given to clients that are connecting. In my example, VPN connections are given an IP address of 10.5.0.X.

Setup a Static IP Address for OpenVPN Clients on your Synology NAS!

11. Navigate back to the userIPs directory

navigating to userIP's folder

12. To show how the configuration is setup, I have created two user accounts (vpnUser1, vpnUser2). When they connect, I want vpnUser1 to connect to the 10.5.0.10 IP address and vpnUser2 to connect to the 10.5.0.14 IP address. By default, the first IP address given is 10.5.0.6. For this reason, I don’t recommend using the .6 IP address, so it’s best to start at .10 and increase that number by four for every additional user. Follow the instructions below to configure this.

13. Create a file with the username where you would like to setup the static IP (in my case, vpnUser1 and vpnUser2).

creating a file for a vpn user

14. Enter the line below in the newly created file. NOTE : the IP address should always increment by 4 and the second IP address in the string should always be one less than the first.

vpn user's static ip

15. I will do the same for vpnUser2.

creating second vpn user file

16. We now need to change the permissions on these files. To do that, run the commands below. If you’re interested in seeing what these permissions are, you can view the information here .

changing file permissions for vpn users

17. Reboot your Synology device and try and connect to your VPN. I suggest using your mobile phone and mobile network (as you cannot be on the same network). You should see that each VPN user that connects has the IP address that we configured above.

ip address for vpn user 1

In general, dynamic IP addresses are fine and the majority of people won’t need to know what IP address is assigned to each device. However, in very specific situations, there may be a requirement where an administrator needs to know that a specific device will be assigned to a specific IP address. This easy tutorial gives you the exact steps that you need to conduct to accomplish that. After setting this up, you can take this one step further and backup your Synology NAS to a Raspberry Pi off-site using Hyper Backup !

How about static IP addresses for L2TP/IPSEC? I can do this fine with OpenVPN, but can’t find a way to do it with L2TP. Any suggestions?

Thank you. I’ve followed your easy instructions .. and it works.

Do you have an idea how to resolve the issue with the DNS names. It’s necessary to use the fixed IP address for setting up the backup process. Using the given Synology Server name (e.g. SynoBackup) would be fine.

Is there a possibility to set a static IP when connected with DSM as an OpenVPN Client (to any other server)?

Can you explain this a little further? When you say set a static IP when connected with DSM, what exactly do you mean by that?

Let me know and hopefully I can help!

Sure, There’s an OpenVPN Server somewhere on the internet (OPNSense, non DSM), my DS is connected to that server. Usually the Server assigns an IP (lets say 10.11.12.13) to that server. Upon reconnect it would assign a new IP. Now I want to find a way to set a static IP (lets say the same 10.11.12.13 or something in that /24 subnet) so other components can reliably access the DS with that IP.

I did some preliminary research on OPNSense as I’ve never used it, but I don’t want to point you in the wrong direction. You would know better than me, but this link looks like it might have what you’re looking for: https://forum.opnsense.org/index.php?topic=2516.0

One thought I had is if you’re trying to access DSM through the mDNS name (NASName.local)? If it doesn’t work, you might have to figure out how to get DNS to work on OPNSense.

I apologize for not having a better answer. I just haven’t used OPNSense and for that reason, can only try and give a few suggestions. If you have any other questions that you think I can help with, please let me know!

Many thanks for this! I have my main Diskstation at home and a remote smaller Diskstation on a University network which I use for backups.

I can’t connect to the remote one directly, but I can tell it to connect to my home VPN and, using this, I can give it a predictable IP address there, which means I can set up snapshot replication to it. Splendid!

Glad to hear it worked, thanks for reading the tutorial!

It worked with my DSM. Thank you.

Glad to hear it worked, thanks for checking out the tutorial!

how to assign static ip address to synology nas

Thanks for this article this really helped. I did discover a few things that will make this easier. With the ifconfig-push command I believe the second IP should be the gateway. So instead of: ifconfig-push 10.5.0.10 10.5.0.9 This would be: ifconfig-push 10.5.0.10 10.5.0.1

It’s also not necessary to restart your Synology, you can actually just restart the vpn service with the command synoservice –restart pkgctl-VPNCenter I actually just setup a scheduled task that is disabled,so I can restart this from the web interface.

This is very helpful, thanks so much for sharing it!

how to assign static ip address to synology nas

Hello, According to this page : https://linuxfr.org/forums/linux-debian-ubuntu/posts/tuto-howto-fixer-ip-des-clients-sur-openvpn it should be the network mask : ifconfig-push 10.5.0.10 255.255.255.0 according to the official website : https://openvpn.net/community-resources/configuring-client-specific-rules-and-access-policies/ it whould be like written in the tutorial

A second thing, the “synoservice” command is not working under DSM 7. I think one can stop and launch again the vpnserver in the application portal.

I used version of this tutorial and my method for application portal and it connected with the good ip.

on my nas under DSM 7.0 $ openvpn –version OpenVPN 2.4.9 according to the official doc of 2.4 https://openvpn.net/community-resources/reference-manual-for-openvpn-2-4/ the second argument should be the remote-netmask so ifconfig-push 10.5.0.10 255.255.255.0

I will have to look and see if anything changed with DSM 7. I created this tutorial for DSM 6, but have no doubt that there could be some changes with DSM 7. Thanks for letting me know!

how to assign static ip address to synology nas

I have implemented this configuration and my client is unable to connect with the VPN Server when I have the client config dir directive in my openvpn.conf. All file modes have been set properly, and connecting with a dynamic ip goes perfect, but once i enable the client-config-dir is just fails. I have configured everything as user root.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? And solved it?

I unfortunately haven’t seen that error before, so it might be a little harder to troubleshoot. Are you receiving any errors in Synology’s log?

Not sure which log(s) to look at, the VPNCenter logs at the vpn server dont show anything (useful). BUt if you have suggestions, they’re welcome 🙂 Maybe at the client side or something…

The logs are buried in the terminal, unfortunately. I have used them, but I’m not exactly sure where they are off the top of my head. If I get some time, I will check and let you know. If you want to explore, they’re in there!

Hmm strangely enough it seems to work now with static ip. Not sure anymore what I changed, but I enabled the client config dir yesterday and restarted the VPNCenter package and after that the client got the assigned static ip…

how to assign static ip address to synology nas

Thank you for this, it’s incredibly useful! I dont expect it to be reliable but I combined this with 4 4TB usb hdd’s in raid 10 with mdadm. Works well so far.

I noticed my pi doesnt seem be mapped to a hostname anymore, is it possible to assign a hostname that devices that my regular subnet will recognize? thanks!

Do you mean through the OpenVPN connection? If so, you can, but you have to implement a DNS server and pass that DNS server to the device through the config file. It should then be resolvable through domain name!

Does NAS use TCP IP?

NAS uses TCP/IP networks, most commonly Ethernet.

How do I access my NAS remotely?

If you have a Synology NAS, it’s actually quite easy to access your NAS from outside of your home network:

  • Go to Control Panel > External Access > QuickConnect.
  • Check the Enable QuickConnect box.
  • Enter your preferred ID in the QuickConnect ID box.
  • Make sure the Automatically create port forwarding rules box is checked.

How do I access my Synology NAS interface?

After the setup is complete, you can access your Synology NAS over the Internet by entering the DDNS hostname in a web browser, followed by a colon and the port number of DSM. The default port number for DSM is 5000 for HTTP and 5001 for HTTPS.

How do I remotely access my Synology NAS?

For Synology users: QuickConnect

  • Check the box to agree to the terms of service as well.
  • Click Apply.

Is it better to have a static or dynamic IP?

A static IP address is better for businesses, DNS servers, and VoIP protocols, while dynamic IP addresses are better for consumers and anyone who doesn’t want to pay for an IP address.

Which is safer static or dynamic IP?

No, dynamic IP addresses are more secure than static IP addresses because it’s harder to track someone online if their IP address keeps changing.

Is static IP Risky?

Static IP addresses are seen as less secure. Because static IP addresses don’t change, data may be easier to locate and to gain access to by a hacker; the static IP addresses’ unchanging nature also leaves them more likely to be hit by follow-up attacks. Static IP addresses are also easier to track.

Does NAS have to be plugged into router?

Definitely not. You can direct connect but then its bot a NAS. You can also connect it to a switch which can be on the same network as your router or isolated from your gateway to the internet but still on your intranet as a NAS.

Does NAS have to be wired to a router?

Another thing worth mentioning here is that while some NAS units connect directly to wireless routers like Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station ($199), most devices will connect via ethernet, Thunderbolt, or USB. Another option is buying a managed switch (such as TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8 Port Gigabit Desktop Switch).

Can you connect a NAS directly to a router?

Step 1: Connect an Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of your NAS to any of the numbered ports at the back of the router. Step 2: Ensure that the power adapter for the storage link device is properly and securely plugged in.

Is A NAS faster than a server?

Efficiency: When it comes to storage efficiency, NAS works better than servers since it optimizes the hardware and software architecture of the system. With NAS, data can be directly transmitted between the client and the storage device rather than through server RAM, which realizes faster response speed and bandwidth.

How to set a static internal IP in Ubuntu

Quick links, how to set static internal ip in ubuntu using the gui, how to set static internal ip in ubuntu using the terminal and text editor.

There comes a time when you might have to configure Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution with a static IP address. While you can't change your external static IP address, since it's the one your internet service provider provides, you can change your internal one. This is the IP address used on your network inside your home or office.

Though many tasks on Ubuntu usually require you to visit the terminal app and deal with lines of text, changing your internal IP is easy. You can do this through the settings app and the Graphical User Interface (GUI). Of course, if you want, you can also swap things out by going through the terminal. Here's how.

Without any technical know-how or knowledge, you can set a static IP in Ubuntu through the settings app. Just note, you will have to use the terminal once to find a range of IP addresses that you can assign. Once you do that, you just tap the Windows Key or the Superkey on your device and search for Settings . Once the app is open, proceed with the steps below.

  • If you're connected to the internet via Wi-Fi, choose Wi-Fi . If you're connected via Ethernet, select Network.
  • Once the interface is open, click the settings icon next to the network you're connected to.
  • From the list of tabs at the top, choose IPv4.
  • Under ipv4 method, be sure to choose Manual.
  • Under Addresses, enter the IP address, the Netmask, and the Gateway you want to use. For finding IP addresses that'll work on your network, you can proceed with the steps below.
  • Open a terminal session. With Ctrl, Alt, and T. Install net-tools with the command sudo apt install net-tools.
  • In this case, we have an inet of 192.168.1.176 and a netmask of 255.255.255.0. We can enter those numbers and can calculate the usable range using this website .
  • When you've calculated the usable range of addresses, choose a valid IP address that falls within this range. Then, you can click Apply at the top.

Any changes you apply will automatically go into effect. If you want, you can also use the terminal to confirm your IP address. Launch it with Ctrl, Alt, and T on your keyboard. Once launched, enter the command ip addr or ip a . You should see an interface IP address listed.

If you're a bit more technical and want to set a static IP in Ubuntu using the terminal, that is possible. You'll have to edit some lines of text and go through a few extra steps, but here's how:

  • Display information about your network. Use the command nmcli connection show. You'll see a network name, a UUID, a Type, and a Device. If this package isn't installed (though it should be, as it comes preinstalled with Ubuntu), then run sudo apt-get install network-manager
  • Note down the range of IP addresses you'll be able to use. Use the command ip addr to find out your machine's current IP address. This tutorial assumes that your network adapter is called enp0s3. If it isn't, then look for the correct one and also change the interface names in the subsequent commands. In the above example, we have an inet of 10.0.2.15, with the /24 denoting that the network uses a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask. In most cases, your usable network range will be whatever is in the first three places of the internal IP address, and then any unused number on your network between 1 and 255 in the last section. For example, we can use 10.0.2.16. If you're unsure, you can enter the subnet mask and your internal IP address into this website to calculate the usable range.
  • Note the IP address of your default gateway with the command ip r. In our example, it's 10.2.2.2.
  • Next, we'll add a new static connection option. Run the following command, making sure to change the numbers after "ip4" and "gw4" depending on your network conditions. These are the IP address you want to change your machine to and the current default gateway, respectively. sudo nmcli con add con-name "static" ifname enp0s3 type ethernet ip4 10.0.2.13/24 gw4 10.0.2.2 In our case, we do the following.
  • Set your DNS, manual DHCP (so, a static IP), and enable the connection. You can do that by running the following commands in succession. nmcli con mod "static" ipv4.dns "1.1.1.1,8.8.8.8" You can swap out the DNS servers above for whatever you want, they are in order of primary and secondary. nmcli con mod "static" ipv4.method manual; nmcli con up "static" ifname enp0s3 Once done, you can run nmcli con show to see if the new connection is enabled. If the output above looks like yours, then you're ready to go!
