How to Cowork Remotely With Friends—or Strangers

Person working on laptop in comfortable living room

For reasons that we’re all aware of, working remotely from home is now far more common than it used to be. That brings with it plenty of advantages, but also a few challenges, such as the need to stay motivated and on task when there are no colleagues around and so many distractions just a click away.

To try and tackle this problem, some people are turning to strangers on the internet—strangers who will sit with them, connected over a video call, while both parties study or work or do whatever needs to be done.

It may sound like a bizarre solution at first, but it works better than you might think. It adds a low level of accountability without much additional effort. If you’re sharing your focus session with someone else, albeit silently and simply, you’re far less likely to be tempted by an afternoon nap or an hour of binge watching .

Illustration of doodle characters working on laptops

Focusmate pairs you with another user to help you focus.

Focusmate is one of the leading services in this particular field, connecting you with another user on the same service so you can get stuff done. You can get up to three free 25-minute or 50-minute sessions per week by registering an account on Focusmate, and unlimited sessions are yours for $5 a month.

All you need to do is tell Focusmate when there are free slots in your schedule, and it’ll match you with a partner plucked at random. There’s no small talk and no collaboration involved: Once you’re connected with each other, all you have to do is share the task you’re working on and then get to it.

According to internal user surveys carried out by Focusmate, 93 percent of people who’ve used the service say that it helped their productivity. Even if those users are somewhat biased, that’s still a high figure—it’s at least worth trying out for free to see whether it helps with your particular way of working.

As long as you’ve got a camera and a microphone on your device, you can use Focusmate. It works with Chrome on the desktop and on Android, and with Safari on the iPhone and the iPad.

Life At Spaces lets you invite other people into your working space.

Life At Spaces takes a slightly different approach, and the coworking video session that works in a similar way to Focusmate is just one part of what Life At Spaces does. There are other aids to productivity included here, such as desktop spaces to manage your mood, ambient music to keep you focused, and a to-do list tool as well.

The 20 Best Portable Chargers for All of Your Devices

As far as remote working goes, there’s a way of inviting other users into your digital working space to further concentrate your mind. You don’t get any of the advanced scheduling tools or partnering technology that Focusmate offers—you need to invite someone you know—but it may work better for you.

You need a mic and camera to use the feature, and you’ll be given an email link that you can pass on to one or more coworkers as needed. It’s really up to you how you use Life At Spaces—in terms of how long the sessions are and how you use them—and there’s plenty of flexibility built into the platform.

As we’ve said, there’s lots more to explore here as well, whether that’s putting a soothing background on your laptop while you work, or using a Pomodoro timer to schedule your working sessions and your breaks. You get certain features (including 15 minutes per day of coworking video chat) for free, with a premium account costing $9 a month.

Person shown on laptop screen in a video call

Set up your own session for yourself on Zoom.

You don’t necessarily need to sign up for a whole new service to work with other people in this way: You just need some video calling software like Microsoft Teams , Zoom , or Google Meet , and someone to work with, and you can set up the connection and the work session yourself.

Of course you miss out on the automatic scheduling features of something like Focusmate, but if you’re organizing everything yourself, then you’ve got full control over how everything runs—whether that’s the person signing up with you or how long the session lasts.

We would recommend agreeing ahead of time how much time you’re going to spend working together, and how much interaction there’s going to be—find something that works for you. Focusmate advises people to keep the small talk down to a minimum, but then again, they are putting strangers together, and you might prefer a different set of rules.

One benefit of self-organized coworking video sessions is that you won’t have to pay anything extra for them. One-to-one video calls and even group video calls are usually free for an unlimited time on most video platforms.

7 Sophisticated Co-working Spaces That Prove Office Culture Will Survive

By Jessica Cherner

If working remotely for a year and a half has taught ambitious professionals anything, it’s that some people—those in less conservative fields—can work from just about anywhere. And though punching away at a laptop’s keys from the comfort of the kitchen table or a makeshift home office was a much-welcomed luxury at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s gotten a bit old, and plenty of people are ready for a change of scenery. Enter: coworking spaces that offer everything from in-house cafés to dedicated quiet rooms.

Though some may not be aching to get back to the office, there’s an element of productivity that comes with simply getting dressed and going somewhere—even if it’s just for a few hours. Plus, doesn’t home feel even more special after returning from a long day away? Luckily, coworking spaces are popping up in nearly every hardworking metropolis across the U.S.

a bright office with a long desk pink chairs and a colorcoded book shelf.

Founded in 2016, The Wing boasts stylish outposts in West Hollywood, San Francisco, and three multistory locations in Manhattan. It’s a women-focused working space that offers way more than just super-fast Wi-Fi and business class printers; there are live events, networking opportunities, beauty spaces, and pumping rooms, to name a few of the benefits. Jen Cho, head of marketing and communications, says, “It has been exciting to see how we are a solution for so many in this new world we are living in.”

The Wing has always been big on live events and programming, which is going through a pretty significant change this fall. Cho explains, “Although we do have some great guests come to speak, we are focusing on events that provide support for our members. Event topics will focus on professional development, education on finance and investing, entrepreneurial support, work-life balance, and wellness.”

Industrious

Founded in 2013 by Jamie Hodari and Justin Stewart, who had been close friends since they were toddlers, Industrious was born out of what Hodari considered an urgent necessity for beautiful coworking spaces that felt as professional as a traditional office. Today, Industrious has more than 100 locations across the U.S., U.K., and Singapore. And though the heart of a coworking space is easily the shared spaces—complete with long, narrow tables, plush seating, and an always-hissing espresso bar—Industrious understands that some thrive on quiet, which is why there are private offices and suites at each location.

What’s more, the locations are hardly new builds: They’re transformed, formerly abandoned commercial spaces like movie theaters and departments stores. And though each space is different from the others, they’re all designed in a neutral palette with industrial-inspired elements.

A gilded age space with glass offices and conference rooms

Coworker, which launched in 2015, is an online marketplace of sorts for finding, booking, and accessing coworking-friendly spots everywhere from Savannah to Doha. It partners with 18,500 coworking spaces in 174 countries across five continents. Some of the spaces are even in landmark buildings, like the former Royal Bank of Canada, which is now Crew Collective & Café, a coworking space in a Neoclassical tower that boasts 22 floors.

22 Pet-Friendly Plants That Will Liven Up Your Space

By Kristi Kellogg

Backed by real estate owner, developer, operator, and fund manager Tishman Speyer, Studio’s 13 locations (11 of which are in the most populous cities in the U.S., and two are in Brazil) are all equally Instagrammable. The Beverly Hills location on North Maple Drive, for instance, is a bright, white, open layout with floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed air vents and pipes, and colorful midcentury-inspired furniture. And in Rio de Janeiro, pale jute area rugs cleverly divide the massive space into distinct areas, some of which feature woven swings hanging from the ceilings.

Decor aside, Studio is highly functional, with hot desks (the most flexible membership plan that offers access to shared workspaces, conference rooms, lounge areas, live events, and Studio programming), private offices (which feature height-adjustable desks, ergonomic chairs, and private Wi-Fi networks), and move-in ready, customizable work suites. And for those who aren’t afraid of commitment, opt for Studio+. The Studio team will design, build, and operate your newly owned or leased office space in any building—no matter where it is.

NeueHouse—with “neue” meaning new in German—has completely (and successfully) reimagined the ideal social environment for those working in design, publishing, the arts, entertainment, and philanthropy. With three locations—two in Los Angeles and one in Manhattan—and three more outposts opening next year in Venice Beach, Miami, and Stockholm, NeueHouse is taking over the remote work scene one cultural hub at a time.

In every House, all of which are set in historic landmark buildings, including the 1930s Tepper Galleries in Manhattan and Downtown L.A.’s circa 1893 Bradbury Building, members can enjoy some serious amenities, including private studios, broadcast and podcast facilities, conference rooms, screening spaces, private phone booths, and wellness areas, and earlier this week at the Los Angeles outpost, an on-site cafe and bar dubbed the Wyman Bar. Though amenities vary from house to house, the luxuries on offer are unparalleled.

A swanky collaboration between Ease Hospitality and Rockwell Group’s David Rockwell, @Ease 1345 is a coworking space just below Central Park that feels more like a world-class hotel than a typical office. Plus, the obvious emphasis on design that’s equally glamorous and biophilic across the office’s 18,000 square feet of conferencing and leisure amenities doesn’t hurt. Like any well-executed massive space, it has an impressive anchor that ties everything together: an Ed Hollander–designed terrarium that features more than 400 living plants, all of which are visible from nearly every nook and cranny of @Ease 1345. It may be exclusive to building tenants and their guests, but anyone can rent out the space for meetings, events, conferences.

In addition to the Oasis conference room, which has a capacity of about 200, there are private meeting rooms for breakout sessions, dedicated wellness studios, communal lounges, an on-site café, and concierge services.

Soho House, the famed members-only social club that garnered international acclaim as soon as the first hub opened on London’s Greek Street in 1995, now has 30 Houses in a whopping 10 countries across Europe, Asia, and North America. There’s also The Ned in London, Scorpios Beach Club in Mykonos, and Soho Home, an interiors and lifestyle retail brand. Plus, all Soho House and Soho Friends members can add the new Soho Works program onto their membership. In true Soho House fashion, each workspace is outfitted in a collection of vintage and contemporary decor, all of which is covered in buttery soft leather, jewel-toned leather, or on-trend cane.

Anyone who opts into the new program can enjoy everything from lounge spaces and their own desks with lockable storage to private lofts for their whole team and a bespoke membership meant for at least 15 people.

Build your business at a coworking space

Our interview with anneleen.

Anneleen is the founder and Breathing Coach at Teal Therapy , a company specialising in solution-focused collaborative and holistic therapy, tailored entirely around clients and their unique situation, goals and values. Designed to help clients realign with their centre and embrace their personal balance, drawing on a framework of breathwork, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), integrated with hypnosis and present-moment awareness.

Anneleen uses Flexi Passes at HomeWork and regularly attends our networking and masterclass events . We sat down with her to chat about her business; how it started, how it’s doing and how HomeWork has had an impact.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your business?

I’m originally from Belgium and I’ve been living in Southfields for about 25 years now with my family. In the past, I’ve had quite a few different roles in the corporate sector but I retrained a few years ago as a therapist and breathing coach.

My work now is all about scaling people up and helping them thrive in life. My belief is that your quality of life will be defined by how you respond to situations, not what happens to you. There’s so much outside of our control but we can learn to control how we respond.

People come to me who aren’t in a good place, my clients are often they’re experiencing anxiety or high stress levels. My job is to help them get back to a place of balance so they can thrive. I provide the tools to prevent people from returning to their bad place through coaching.

I offer one-to-one, group coaching sessions or workshops. For example, a series of modules on pre-resilience (proactive resilience) and well-being. Clients can choose from self-paced learning, in person or online guided sessions. I’ve created ‘Power Ups’, hour long sessions which provide all the possible hacks, around various topics.

Who is your target customer?

Individuals who want to take more responsibility for their own wellbeing, sit in the driver seat of their own life, rather than being a passenger (or in the boot, as one of my clients quipped last week!)

I also work with companies who see the value in actively investing in the wellbeing of their employees as it leads to better performance, higher job satisfaction, less absenteeism and a positive workplace culture.

How long has your business been running?

I set the business up three and a half years ago during the pandemic. Previously, I was a self-employed head hunter. I’ve always been fascinated by the power of the mind and what makes people tick.

Teal therapy is a strong competitor in the market, combining therapy tools with contemporary science. I provide a combination of practical, hands-on and easy to remember tips, techniques and strategies. Such as a breathing technique to calm nerves ahead of a presentation, a hack to stop repetitive thoughts or a way to use your vision to calm down.

Why did you start working at HomeWork?

When HomeWork Putney first opened I was drawn in by their fantastic coffees! I was rooting for them during the pandemic because they had only been open for 5 months. When I saw they were opening their second site in Southfields, I thought yeah that’s the way to go.

What’s your favourite thing about HomeWork?

What’s not to like? The atmosphere is very personal, thanks to the people but also very professional. It offers all the facilities that somebody needs to function, but it also offers a big opportunity for networking.

How has HomeWork impacted you and your business?

I don’t think many people are natural networkers so I love the fact that HomeWork encourages participating in networking events. I regularly attend these events, which I’ve received so many positive connections from already. You can connect build plenty of connections and you never know what it will lead to!

I’m not a permanent member, but still feel very supported by the community. It makes such a big difference in comparison to being cooped up at home. I’ve only just started but it feels like it can only go up from here!

Are you looking to build your business, whilst using a coworking space flexibly? We offer pay as you go and flexible membership options, allowing you to build the business, grow personally, connect with others and gain clients through attending networking events.
