Amazon's best selling project folders, how to choose a folder for school - buying guide.

Your folders will hold important documents, so you'll want to consider factors such as the type, size, material, and extra features before you settle on any one.

Choose the Right Type of Folder for Your Filing System

Choose the Right Type of Folder for Your Filing System

When it comes to the type of folder, you can choose from basic folders, ones with dividers or pockets, or expandable ones. Choose the right kind of folder according to your preferred filing system .

If you like to keep your handouts from different subjects in separate folders, you should go for classic folders. These folders usually come with a fastener to keep your documents secure . They can also have a pocket for extra sheets and a tab that you can label.

You can also pick classic folders with dividers. These folders come with two or more divisions that will allow you to keep pages from different subjects classified. They also feature fasteners on top of the folder that will keep your documents in place.

If you don’t want to keep your paper sheets fastened, you can go for a folder with pockets. This type of folder usually features one or two pockets wherein you can place your sheets of paper without punching holes and fastening them.

Another great option is an expandable folder. If you’d rather keep all your handouts in one folder, this is the one for you. This folder comes with multiple compartments that will hold your pages. It also usually comes with tabs that you can label to make it more organized.

Get the Right Size Based on Your Handouts

Get the Right Size Based on Your Handouts

Think about the documents you want to keep in your folder and choose the size of your folder accordingly. Folders typically come in one of two sizes . You can choose between a legal (nine and a half by 14.5 inches) or letter-sized (nine by 12 inches) folder. The size of the folder refers to what type of paper it can hold, and not the size of the folder itself.

Also, consider the volume of the folder. You can check the folder’s dimensions to see how many sheets of paper it can hold . If you want something that can store just a few, you can go for a thinner and basic folder. But if you’re going to keep them in bulk an expanding folder might be the best for you.

Keep It Light and Durable With the Right Material

Keep It Light and Durable With the Right Material

You should look for a material that is light and durable. Folders can be made of materials like manila, kraft, or pressboard. Although these materials aren’t waterproof, they are lightweight and thick enough to protect your documents. Plus, you can also customize them easily by drawing or writing on them.

But if you want something that can protect your paper sheets from water , go for folders made of plastic such as polypropylene. These are still lightweight but are more durable because they are more tear-resistant. Some plastic folders are made of acid-free materials. They will prevent the paper from fading or yellowing.

Consider Other Helpful Features

Consider Other Helpful Features

To make things easier for you, you can consider folders that already come with tabs and labels . These tabs can be seen at the side or the bottom of the folder. You can also opt for ones with labels and tab inserts. These tabs will allow you to organize your handouts better.

Aside from tabs, it might also be helpful to go for assorted colors when it comes to individual folders. This can help you color-code your subjects and easily find documents for that specific subject.

school for folders

If you’re currently in school or university, then you know how important the right set of stationery designs is. You need to have a collection of stationery designs that provide you with value and make your everyday tasks easy to complete with efficiency. These are the objects that are gonna help you get through your day, and directly or indirectly affect your productivity. It’s imperative to have a collection that lets you work easily, efficiently, and effectively. From an everlasting all-metal pencil to minimal Japanese drawing pads – these are the modern stationery designs you need to meet your modern stationery needs at school.

school for folders

Called the Pen Fan , this nifty and unique stationery design is a must-have school supply. It is designed to be a cross between a Pantone shade card, and a stationery set, accommodating 8 different flat-head sketch pens in a nifty, compact, and pretty easy-to-carry set.

Why is it noteworthy?

The various flat pens are interconnected, creating a cute little Japanese-fan-style layout that proudly showcases all 8 colors, letting you pick and choose from them. The pens are detachable, and you can easily snap on and off the pens, to create a palette that caters to you.

What we like

  • Easy-to-carry portable set
  • Reduces the risk of losing any of the pens

What we dislike

  • There are only 8 colors to pick from, which can be limiting. There could have been more color options

2. Everlasting Metal Pencil

The pencil’s octagonal shaft is built from aluminum, and it has a special alloy core. This may make you feel that it might just leave heavy grooves on your paper, but it draws like a real pencil, without the tip getting worn down, even after dozens of marks. It’s a great tool for school, where you constantly need to be scrolling or sketching something away.

  • Features a metal core, not a clay or charcoal one, so it wears away quite slowly, and might even outlive you
  • If you’re someone who uses smudging techniques at school, this pencil isn’t recommended, as it doesn’t smear or smudge like normal graphite

Back-to-school shopping remains as much of a ritual as ever, but the gear that's filling today's backpacks looks a little different than it did several decades ago. Whether you learned to read with Dick and Jane, brought your PB&J in a metal lunch box or corralled your papers in a Trapper Keeper, here's your trip down memory lane.

<p><a href="https://mentalfloss.com/article/52726/history-trapper-keeper">Rolled out nationwide in 1981</a>, Mead's Trapper Keeper was a runaway hit, dominating kids' back-to-school wishlists for most of the '80s and '90s. This three-ring binder with an iconic "trapper" flap on the front came in a huge number of designs and was sold practically everywhere. Sales tapered off in the new millennium, and Mead was forced to replace the largely PVC binders with safer materials. While Trapper Keepers have been produced sporadically in recent years, they've largely been supplanted by Mead's Five Star binders. Gotta have the real deal? You can find <a href="https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2540003.m570.l1313&_nkw=trapper+keepers&_sacat=0">vintage versions on eBay</a>.</p>

<p>Mr. Sketch didn't have an olfactory monopoly in the classroom. <p>For children of the late '80s and early '90s, nothing was safe from the Lisa Frank empire. These iconic early readers were a staple of classrooms as early as the '30s, and by 1970, a staggering <a href="https://mentalfloss.com/article/68475/15-fun-facts-about-dick-and-jane">85 million first-graders</a> had plowed through the repetitive texts, according to Mental Floss. But they gradually fell out of favor for two main reasons: First, at many schools, phonics replaced the whole-word reading method that the books used; and second, "Dick and Jane" simply didn't reflect increasingly diverse student bodies. Today, if you've just gotta "see Jane run," <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Go-Read-Dick-Jane/dp/0448434059/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=msnshop-20&linkId=3f5f1fc06cb8a1ba0a6fa9975ded22c6&language=en_US">they're easily tracked down on Amazon</a>, while pricier originals are all over eBay.

Click. Click. Click. Click. No doubt the sound these things made drove teachers batty, but in the '70s and '80s, Bic's fat-barreled, four-color pen was one of kids' favorite writing instruments. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2000/03/16/garden/close-to-home-just-a-pen-you-say-not-to-bic-boy.html">Unleashed upon the U.S. in 1971</a> after a successful launch in France, the iconic pen remains on the market today and is even available in different versions, including <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00347A98Y/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=msnshop-20&linkId=29d945f10efb85f4d0f282362eacb33e&language=en_US">"fashionable" pastels</a>. Oh, and that little ball at the top? It wasn't just a design flourish — according to Bic, it was meant to help people dial rotary phones.

Until the 1980s, metal lunch boxes were a common sight in school cafeterias. Their heyday <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2016/10/31/495218823/beyond-the-pail-npr-unpacks-the-history-of-the-lunch-box">started in the '50s</a>, when enterprising executives at Aladdin started putting popular characters on them; soon, they would feature everything from superheroes to The Beatles. A few decades later, manufacturers turned to cheaper molded plastic. Though you can still track down metal or plastic lunch boxes online (<a href="https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311.R1.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xvintage+metal+lunch+box.TRS0&_nkw=vintage+metal+lunch+box&_sacat=0">including some vintage finds</a>), stores today almost exclusively sell insulated, soft-sided lunch bags.

Long before the Internet and its infinite wisdom, students' favorite homework shortcuts came bundled in small booklets with black and yellow stripes. These study guides that famously summarized classic literature became popular in the '60s and remained popular over the next few decades, <a href="https://mentalfloss.com/article/89494/15-studious-facts-about-cliffsnotes">despite objections from teachers</a> who said they made it too easy to cheat. Today, the company <a href="https://www.cliffsnotes.com/literature">makes its literature guides available for free online</a> and has refocused on study and test-prep guides to stay profitable.

Markers used to be a sweeter-smelling affair. Mr. Sketch markers were introduced in the mid-1960s, and kids' masterpieces used to smell like cherry (red), grape (purple), mint (green) and a host of other scents. Though never off the shelves entirely, Mr. Sketch was reintroduced in 2014 to a new generation with <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2015/01/19/nostalgia-smells-like-grape-scented-markers-mr-sketch-is-back/">a commercial that featured a flatulent blueberry</a>. Today the markers are available at major retailers <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/Mr-Sketch-Scented-Chisel-Tip-Marker-Set-12-Color/15066113">including Walmart</a>, but don't be surprised if your kid's supply list insists on Crayola.

Big Chief probably wouldn't fly today (just ask the embattled Chief Wahoo) but these ubiquitous thick red tablets were a common sight on school desks throughout the '50s, '60s, and '70s. Production changed hands <a href="https://doubledranch.com/blogs/double-talk/170116103-rememories-back-to-school-big-chief-tablets">between a few companies</a> over the years, eventually coming to a halt roughly 20 years ago. But never underestimate the power of nostalgia: There are still <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Big-Chief-Writing-Primary-Springfield/dp/B0094ITC9Y/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=msnshop-20&linkId=078b9628fcb7e7be1b91666bd47e328b&language=en_US">versions on Amazon</a> up for grabs.

<p>If Bic's four-color pen had a pencil counterpart, it was <a href="https://harcourtoutlinesstore.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=59_60_158">the Pop-a-Point pencil</a>. As soon as the tip became too blunt, you pulled out the little cartridge, pushed it into a hole at the end of the pencil, and voila – a new cartridge with a new writing tip popped forward. Today, they're largely a novelty item. </p>

Today, powerful calculators are a requirement for high-schoolers plodding through advanced mathematics classes. But Texas Instruments wouldn't begin distributing its handheld scientific calculators to consumers until the middle of the '70s. Before then, students <a href="https://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/an-interview-with-vintage-slide-rule-collector-mike-konshak/">had to rely on slide rules</a> to perform tricky calculations. Often made of wood or plastic, they were usually rectangular and had logarithmic scales along the side; students could often follow along as their teacher used a larger slide rule to demonstrate how to solve a problem. Today, they're a favorite of collectors and are <a href="https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xslide+rule.TRS0&_nkw=slide+rule&_sacat=0">up for grabs on eBay</a>.

Maybe it came in a squat jar with a brush, or maybe you got to use the fancy container with the rubber spreader on top. Whatever you used in the '60s and '70s for art projects, chances are it was paste or rubber cement. Both are still available but have largely been replaced by glue sticks or those ubiquitous bottles of Elmer's with the orange tip. Of course, that means today's kids will never know the joy of rolling balls of rubber cement between their fingers or <a href="https://www.gpb.org/blogs/the-daily-jog/2013/03/19/was-it-ok-to-eat-paste-as-a-child">secretly eating paste</a> (spoiler alert: it wasn't that bad for us after all).

The modern backpack is so prevalent that it's easy to forget that there was something that came before: the satchel. Up until JanSport helped spur a revolution in the '70s, backpacks were <a href="https://time.com/4477959/a-brief-history-of-the-modern-backpack/">mostly reserved for outdoorsy uses like hiking</a>, and students often relied on single-strap canvas and leather bags that buckled shut to lug around their books and homework. Of course, there are still plenty of satchels on the market today, but you're better off looking for them using their modern name: <a href="https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=as_li_ss_tl?k=satchel&ref=nb_sb_noss_2&linkCode=ll2&tag=msnshop-20&linkId=be373583730e50dee1a60e2b1230a6de&language=en_US">messenger bags</a>.

Floppy Disks

If you were lucky enough to be doing schoolwork on a personal computer during the '80s and '90s, a floppy disk was probably your constant companion. At the beginning of the Reagan era, 5.25-inch floppies reigned supreme, but eventually gave way to more portable 3.25-inch disks. The rest, of course, is history — floppies ceded the market to read-writable CDs and DVDs by the new millennium, then USB drives. The latter remains a popular way for today's students to store and carry their digital work — if, of course, they haven't simply stored it in the cloud.

<p>Having the coolest school supplies has always been a status symbol, and in the '80s, there was nothing cooler than doing your work with an Eraser Mate. Paper Mate introduced its famous erasable-ink pen in 1979, and even though there was definite room for improvement (we still remember the smell and the runny ink), the novelty factor ensured their popularity with kids. Today, improved Eraser Mates <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/Paper-Mate-EraserMate-Erasable-Pens-Medium-Point-Black-4-Pack/17617405">are still in stores</a>, but they face stiff competition from better-reviewed <a href="https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pilot-FriXion-Clicker-Erasable-Gel-Ink-Retractable-Pen-Assorted-Ink-7mm-7-Pack-PIL31472/22477879">Pilot FriXion</a> erasable, gel-ink pens.</p>

Today, improved Eraser Mates are still in stores , but they face stiff competition from better-reviewed Pilot FriXion erasable, gel-ink pens.

In the '80s, teachers were a little more lax about the school supplies they let into their classrooms, and kids took full advantage in the form of novelty erasers. These colorful rubber gems often didn't work that well, spreading pencil smudges and sometimes even shredding paper. Still, function was beside the point — they just looked cool. Our favorite varieties included the <a href="https://www.eightieskids.com/10-pencil-erasers-that-will-take-you-back-to-your-school-days/">erasers that looked like food</a> and the ubiquitous rainbow designs.

Novelty Erasers

Of all the supplies on our list, marbled composition books are probably still in widest use today and might be one of the most iconic school supplies of all time. The eye-catching design likely <a href="https://mentalfloss.com/article/585201/long-history-marbled-composition-book">made its way stateside from Europe</a> in the late 1800s, and it's been a top seller here ever since, likely thanks to the stitched, spiral-free binding that means papers can't escape. Virtually every paper company still makes its own version, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Mead-Composition-Notebooks-Fashion-Assorted/dp/B0028N6PSI/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&linkCode=ll1&tag=msnshop-20&linkId=a1e9f82f1557d568a69805b9d95a258b&language=en_US">including brand names like Mead</a>, but store brands are widely available at big-box stores, often for under a buck a piece.<div class="rich-text"><p>This article was originally published on <a href="https://blog.cheapism.com/retro-school-supplies/">Cheapism</a></p></div>

  • Penn State takes down No. 12 Illinois, LSU beats Kentucky at the buzzer in wild Wednesday

school for folders

Second-half comebacks and an incredible sequence finishing with a buzzer-beating lay-in headlined a wild Wednesday in men's hoops. Here's what you need to know.

Fans at Rec Hall storm the court as Penn State rallies down 14 in second half

In the final 15 minutes of regulation, the Penn State Nittany Lions erased a 14-point deficit and beat No. 12 Illinois by just one free throw down the stretch, 90-89 .

It was Jameel Brown and Zach Hicks who wrestled the Nittany Lions from the double-digit hole, each contributing 11 second-half points. Coming off the bench, Brown found his groove in the nick of time, sinking a trio of crucial threes and three steals to steer momentum in Penn State's direction — his last robbery with :30 on the clock set up a Puff Johnson layup that brought the Nittany Lions within two (89-87).

📊 FINAL STATS: How Penn State pulled off the comeback

On the next possession, Illinois' Coleman Hawkins failed to convert both of his free throws, then he fouled Hicks on his way up for three, painting the perfect comeback picture for Penn State. Roars from the white-out crowd rumbled as Hicks drained each of his three foul shots for a one-point advantage with three seconds left. What happens next, well... You can see the scenes in the Tweet below:

THE COURT STORMS KEEP COMING ⛈️ @PennStateMBB (via @CBBonFOX ) pic.twitter.com/R0pgwV5WDG — NCAA March Madness (@MarchMadnessMBB) February 22, 2024

Nick Kern was Penn State's most prolific shooter, finishing with a team-high 22 points. Hicks was a driver in Penn State's second-half comeback, finishing the game with 13 points and eight boards.

Despite the loss, Illinois dominated the offensive and defensive glass, grabbing 49 total rebounds to Penn State's 25. Fifth-year guard Terrence Shannon Jr. put up a career-high 35 points — shooting 10-18 from the field — and a season-best 11 boards to keep the Fighting Illini in the game. Illinois trailed by nine points early in the game, but went into halftime up 48-41. Critical turnovers and missed shots decided the game.

This marks Penn State's second ranked win this season. The Nittany Lions took down then-No. 11 Wisconsin in mid-January, 87-83, and are now 13-14 on the season (7-9 Big Ten). A middle-dweller in Big Ten standings this year, Penn State can use this Quad 1 win to garner some momentum just three weeks before the conference tournament. As for Illinois (19-7)... Wisconsin and Purdue loom in the next two weeks, as the Illini must prove where they stack up.

Wild sequence at the end of LSU vs. Kentucky ends with an incredible buzzer beater

What started as Rob Dillingham doing what Rob Dillingham does — sinking a clutch jumper to seal what looked like a Kentucky win, ended with an incredible Tyrell Ward lay-in to send the Wildcats home with a 75-74 loss. Watch the sequence below:

WHAT. A. SEQUENCE. 😱 UNBELIEVEABLE SCENES IN BATON ROUGE 🤯 pic.twitter.com/bgeB9Inrzc — NCAA March Madness (@MarchMadnessMBB) February 22, 2024

With the win LSU improves to 14-12 on the year, inching closer and closer to the NCAA tournament bubble, while Kentucky falls to 18-8 and 8-5 in SEC play, tied for fifth with Florida in the conference.

Jewish theater under Stalinism :Moscow State Jewish Theater (GOSET) and Moscow State Jewish Theater School (MGETU)

Documents covering the period 1916-1950 from the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI) in Moscow about the Moscow State Jewish Theater and the affiliated Moscow State Jewish Theater School (MGETU). The collection includes the archive of GOSET (RGALI, Fond 2307) and the archive of the Theatrical School of the State Jewish Theater (MGETU) (RGALI, Fond 2308). This collection of archival documents from the RGALI contains material that describes the history of the Soviet culture and Theater, Jewish Theater, Jewish avant-garde art and the Kremlin's policy toward Jewish society and culture from 1919 until the early 1950s. The collection contains correspondence with ministries, state organizations, authors, administration, plays, notes ( with comments of censors) and the personal archives of Alexei Granovskii, Solomon Mikhoels, and other actors and writers. Other materials that can be found in this collection are press reports from Soviet and foreign periodicals about the theater and its tours in Europe, posters, drawings, theater programs and documents about other Jewish theaters. The documents of GOSET were transferred to RGALI in two stages: In 1958 RGALI received the documents from the Central archive of the Ministry of Culture of the USSR and in 1959 from the A.A. Bakhrushin State central theater museum. The museum received the documents from the liquidation commission in 1950. After the closing liquidation of the theater its archive was moved for preservation to the Aleksei Bakhrushin State Theatrical Museum where it was stored (without being catalogued). On the night of January 6-7, 1953 a major fire occurred in the small room where the archives of these discredited theaters were housed. A result of this was not only that the documents suffered considerably, but also that many of them were destroyed. The documentary materials that survived were transferred by order of the Committee for the Arts of the Council of Ministers of the USSR to the collection of the Main Archive of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and in 1959 to the Central Archive of Literature and Art (TsGALI), now know as the Russian Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI): Fond 2307, which contains 541 items in storage (dating from 1919-1949).

86 reels; fond 2307 : 650 files ; fond 2308 : 206 files. Includes index.

Ready for back-to-school shopping? Tennessee's sales tax holiday is this weekend

school for folders

Tennessee’s traditional sales tax holiday is the final weekend in July, bringing relief to households as students prepare for another school year. But the weekend is only the opening act to a three-month tax holiday beginning in August.

Tennessee's 7% sales tax will be eliminated for select items during this year’s back-to-school tax-free holiday July 28-30. Items such as clothing, school supplies and computers can be purchased without sales tax , with some stipulations according to the Tennessee Department of Revenue.

Though the clothing and school supplies tax holiday is only a few days, it will be followed by a tax holiday for groceries starting Aug. 1. And this one will last until Oct. 31. Tennessee’s 4% food tax will be dropped when buying most foods.

What's exempt from sales tax during Tennessee's tax holiday weekend?

The traditional tax-free holiday July 28-30 applies to clothing and school supplies $100 or less per item. Computers, laptops and tablets costing $1,500 or less are also exempt from sales tax. The tax for these items is dropped for all consumers, not just students.

What is exempt

  • School and art supplies such as binders, backpacks, crayons, paper, pens, pencils, rulers, paints, drawing pads and artist paintbrushes.
  • General apparel such as shirts, pants, jackets, socks, shoes and dresses.
  • Computers, laptops and tablets such as iPads, for personal use.
  • A list of exempt items is available at tn.gov/revenue/taxes/sales-and-use-tax/sales-tax-holiday .

What is not exempt

  • Clothing items and school supplies costing more than $100 per item are not exempt from sales tax. Neither are personal computers over $1,500 or any electronics for business purposes.
  • Cosmetics, jewelry, handbags, wallets and other clothing accessories.
  • Sports and recreational equipment, including helmets, cleated and spiked shoes and skates.
  • Computer supplies such as storage drives, printers and printer ink.
  • Video consoles, electronic readers and smart phones, and household appliances.
  • A full list of items not exempt is available at tn.gov/revenue/taxes/sales-and-use-tax/sales-tax-holiday .

What will be exempt from sales tax during Tennessee's three-month food tax holiday?

The Tennessee General Assembly earlier this year approved a three-month grocery tax holiday . There will be no sales tax on most foods Aug. 1-Oct. 31. The Tennessee Department of Revenue estimates each Tennessee family will save over $100 in taxes.

The tax suspension is meant to alleviate some of the recent financial burden on households amid a period of high food prices. The price of eggs , in one notable example, skyrocketed in late 2022 and early 2023, peaking at $5.30 a dozen, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Egg prices have dropped considerably , now costing between $0.99 and $1.39 recent USDA data showed.

But the cost of all food is still 6.7% higher than it was in 2022, according to the USDA’s June consumer price index report, making the three-month tax holiday a welcome relief.

What will be exempt

  • Food and food ingredients sold at grocery stores and other food dealers will not have a sales tax.
  • The Tennessee Department of Revenue defines food and food ingredients as “liquid, concentrated, solid, frozen, dried or dehydrated substances that are sold to be ingested or chewed by humans and are consumed for their taste or nutritional value.”
  • A list of food and food ingredient examples is available at tn.gov/revenue/taxes/sales-and-use-tax/sales-tax-holiday .

What will not be exempt

  • Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, candy, dietary supplements and food prepared by the seller will still be taxed.
  • Food and food ingredients purchased from vending machines and other unmanned retail spaces where food and beverages can be purchased remain subject to sales tax.
