Free Year 2 Maths Worksheets And Homework: Printable, Downloadable Or Just View Online
Sophie bessemer.
Here you can find all our free Year 2 maths worksheets and Year 2 maths resources, many of which are suitable for homework and home learning .
All our KS1 and KS2 maths worksheets are printable and most are in pdf format, but they can also be viewed online too. If you’re looking for other slides-based teaching resources and lesson plans, we recommend you look at our range of White Rose maths lessons.
The hope is that these pdf Year 2 maths worksheets and free resources can be used with minimal support from parents as part of a 6 or 7 year old’s Year 2 maths homework routine and by teachers as part of a planned lesson framework.
For parents working with their children at home we would recommend you focus on practising and improving pupils’ core numeracy skills using the numbers worksheets as these generally require less input than topics like geometry – 2d shapes and 3d shapes. Place value and number after all are the building blocks of Key Stage 1 and later Key Stage 2 maths.
We have also included some telling the time worksheets; these will require support from a teacher or parent but the method used is truly revolutionary.
National curriculum guidance is given where relevant and each Year 2 worksheet includes answer sheets.
If you’re a parent then our home learning hub is full of home learning packs , workbooks, tips and further teaching ideas for Year 2 Maths at home and maths homework .
If you’re a teacher or school leader who is interested in improving maths attainment in your school or classroom, then Third Space Learning is here to support you with our online tutoring programme of maths interventions , together with maths resources and CPD.

Subtraction in columns.
Here we have a subtraction worksheet laid out in columns. There is no ‘borrowing’ so it is a simple matter of subtracting the units and subtracting the tens.
Subtract 2-digit numbers in columns
Learning the ten times table in Year 2
Don’t ever suggest that all that needs to be done to multiply by ten is ‘add a nought’. This leads to real problems in later years when multiplying by decimals. Far better to say that the digit moves one place to the left and a zero is put in the units as a place holder.
Speedy 10x table
Five times table in Year 2
There is, of course, a rhythm and pattern to the five times table, as alternate answers end in zero or 5. This makes it one of the easiest times tables to learn. My latest worksheet can be used as a timed practice, with three sets of 12 questions on the page.
Speedy 5x table
Two times table up to 12
This page extends our current times table worksheets found in the Four Rules section and can be found in the Year 2 Calculating section.

New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Statistics
The statutory requirements for Year 2 Statistics :
Pupils should be taught to:
• interpret and construct simple pictograms, tally charts, block diagrams and simple tables
• ask and answer simple questions by counting the number of objects in each category and sorting the categories by quantity
• ask and answer questions about totalling and comparing categorical data.
Main changes and comments
Lists are an important part of this work, such as make a list of the even numbers between 20 and 40. The children should be able to generate their own lists of cars, sweets etc, especially when this fits in with other areas of the curriculum.
Questions can be asked, such as ‘how many cubes will fit in a cup?’ and the children should be able to respond to the question with a plan of action – how they can find out, what equipment they need, how they can display their results.
One of the most important aspects of this work is to ask questions about the data displayed, comparing data: what is the most common?….. how many have?….. how many have not?…. etc.
Children will come across a wide range of graphs, both to record data and to gather information from.
The most common graph they will work on is the block graph. It is important at this early age that they realise that graphs have to be labelled.
Simple pictograms, where the symbol represents one unit are also introduced in year 2.
New Maths Curriculum: Statistics
New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Geometry
a. properties of shapes b. position and direction.
The statutory requirements for Year 2 Geometry :
Properties of shapes
• identify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and symmetry in a vertical line
• identify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and faces
• identify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, for example a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid
• compare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objects.
Position and direction
• order and arrange combinations of mathematical objects in patterns
• use mathematical vocabulary to describe position, direction and movement including distinguishing between rotation as a turn and in terms of right angles for quarter, half and three-quarter turns (clockwise and anti-clockwise), and movement in a straight line.
Two really useful practical items to help with shape are:
a. Cubes: many shapes can be made from cubes. In year 2 keeping to a small number of cubes, eg four, and exploring all the possibilities, is better than using a much larger number in a more random way. b. Pinboard: a pinboard is very useful for exploring all the possible four and five sided shapes. This may be simply made by nailing panel pins or small nails into a piece of plywood approximately 24cm × 24cm.
Position and direction Clockwise and anti-clockwise turns are introduced including quarter, half and three-quarter turns. They will also be expected to become fluent in telling the time on analogue clocks to five minutes.
New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Measurement
• choose and use appropriate standard units to estimate and measure length/height in any direction (m/cm); mass (kg/g); temperature (°C); capacity (litres/ml) to the nearest appropriate unit, using rulers, scales, thermometers and measuring vessels
• compare and order lengths, mass, volume/capacity and record the results using >, < and =
• recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value
• find different combinations of coins that equal the same amounts of money
• solve simple problems in a practical context involving addition and subtraction of money of the same unit, including giving change
• compare and sequence intervals of time
• tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.
One of the key changes is the use of the signs when comparing lengths, mass, volume/capacity.
Children should use standard units of measurement and mental calculations strategies to solve various number problems involving length, mass, capacity and time.
They should be encouraged to explain orally how the problems were solved and begin to write a simple number sentence on paper:
e.g. 12 cm + 6 cm = 18 cm
Children should also be reminded about abbreviations such as cm for centimetre, kg for kilogram and g for gram.
They will also be expected to become fluent in telling the time on analogue clocks to five minutes.
New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Fractions
The statutory requirements for Year 2 Fractions :
• recognise, find, name and write fractions 1/3, 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of a length, shape, set of objects or quantity
• write simple fractions e.g. 1/2 of 6 = 3 and recognise the equivalence of 2/4 and 1/2.
Main changes and comments Quite a few new targets in this category. Counting in fractions up to ten is a new target for this year. Much practical work should continue to be done using shapes and objects so that children understand what finding a half or a quarter of a quantity means.
Thirds are introduced in Year 2 now. This enables children to work with fractions other than halves and quarters at an earlier age. (Some children do so much work with halves that they think all fractions can be worked out by dividing by two!!)
Three quarters is also introduced; the first time children come across a non-unit fraction (where the top number is more than one).
A new target is counting up to ten in quarters. This process has two purposes:
a. so that children see the equivalence between a half and two quarters b. so that children see that fractions can add up to more than one whole one.
New Maths Curriculum: Fractions
New Maths Curriculum: Year 2 Multiplication and Division
It’s time to start learning those times tables off by heart; beginning with the 2x, 5x and 10x tables. The statutory requirements for Year 2 Multiplication and division :
- recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables, including recognising odd and even numbers
- calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division within the multiplication tables and write them using the multiplication (×), division (÷) and equals (=) signs
- show that multiplication of two numbers can be done in any order (commutative) and division of one number by another cannot
- solve problems involving multiplication and division, using materials, arrays, repeated addition, mental methods, and multiplication and division facts, including problems in contexts.
This is the year that children begin to learn multiplication tables, starting with the two, five and ten times tables. Remember, it is not enough to just count up in fives (5, 10, 15, 20 etc.) the whole sentence needs to be learned (5 times 2 equals 10 etc). Perhaps the main change is that tables are meant to be learned up to 12 times, rather than just 10.
As with addition, it is important to know that multiplication can be done in any order, but not division. The relationship between multiplication and division is now stressed more, with inverse operations for checking made more explicit in the Guidance.
Year 2 multiplication and division statutory requirements
Pairs of numbers that make 20
Here we have a straightforward maths worksheet on knowing pairs of numbers that add up to twenty. This is suitable for year 1/2 children or those who are already very confident with knowing pairs of numbers that make ten.
If these facts are not known there are several ways of working the answers out, including:
1. Counting on from the smaller number.
2. Counting on from the smaller number up to 10 and then adding another 10. (If smaller number is below 10.)
3. Counting back from 20, which is trickier.
A good follow up to this page is to ask how many different ways you can make 20 by adding just two numbers.

With the year 2 maths worksheets addition and subtraction collection, students learn addition using objects, adding with carrying, column addition, and problems involving both operations, subtraction word problems, subtraction using shapes and objects etc. Addition and subtraction year 2 activities go a long way to initiate children to activities related to logic in application in real life situations. With the fractions year 2 activities, students will learn notions related to fractions; for example vocabulary like halves, thirds, whole, tenths, fourths, fifths, quarter etc. Children will also learn how to split up objects into the different sections represented by these fractions. For this purpose, children will solve problems in which they are shown pictures and asked to tell if the shape or object is divided into thirds, halves, fourths etc. Having gained these basic skills, children will also practice with our equivalent fractions year 2 collection. Equivalent fractions may not seem to be the same at first but when you start to reduce them to the lowest terms, you will realize that they are actually the same. For example, ½ is same as 2/4. We also cover year 2 geometry with 2d and 3d shapes, names of shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon etc). The year 2 shapes worksheet listed herein teaches children the names of common shapes they encounter in often in math exercises. Children will also study different aspects of numbers; with the place value worksheets for grade 1 collection, children learn the values of numbers as change places. Hence, in a number like 888, all the digits have different weights. With place values, children can also learn standard and expanded forms of numbers. Also check out the multiplication word problems year 2 worksheets collection in which children learn to apply basic skills of multiplication applied to real life situations. There are also basic multiplication activities in which children multiply single digit numbers from one to ten. Also check out the year 2 times tables worksheets for more practice. There is more at this level, with the year 2 money worksheets , children learn to recognize coins in pictures displayed on the worksheets herein. Children will also learn to add these coins. Check out the division word problems year 2 collection on problems that initiate children to the concept of dividing two numbers. When children learn division of small numbers, the next stage is to apply these skills word problems. The year 2 division worksheets pdf collection covers several other aspects of division. Test your children with all the sheets listed herein. With the multiplication and division word problems year 2 collection, children are initiated to mixed operations containing both operations. To solve more complex operations, children are introduced to the concept of BODMAS. The clock worksheets year 2 collection has no limit of options for children to learn how to read time on digital and analogue clocks. Being able to tell time is a vital skill for children to know since it applies to many everyday life situations. Last but not the least on the list is the position and direction year 2 worksheets collection. In it, children will learn spatial sense in a fun way through the aid of pictures and objects located on the left, right, bottom, top, middle or in a 3d grid. We are in constant pursuit of excellence and we shall be updating our content as we find new ideas to work on. Come back for more and remember to share. This content is relevant for studies in the U.K. England, wales etc. It corresponds to primary school math key stage 2 level math. Have fun learning and revising.
