Hart School hails new director
After six months as interim director of the Hart School, David Shonk has been promoted to lead the school on a more permanent basis. Shonk has been a member of the school’s faculty since 2007, and was elevated to the status of full professor in 2019. Read more.

March 22, 2024 3 p.m. Hartman Hall, Forum Now in its third decade, the business plan competition showcases the best business plans developed by teams of students in COB 300. This 12-credit curriculum serves as the gateway to JMU's College of Business, integrating fundamental principles of finance, management, marketing and operations.
Since its inception, nearly 600 students have participated in the Rainey-Shepard Business Plan Competition thanks to the generosity of Rainey and Russell "Rusty" Shepard ('86), who funded the endowment that generates more than $25,000 annually in competition scholarships. Harrisonburg, Virginia - The James Madison University College of Business announces Illumi Lights as the overall winner of the COB300 Business Plan Competition, Platinum Edition, marking the 20 th anniversary of the event. Illumi Lights won first place and a $6,000 scholarship to be shared amongst team members, including:
The COB 300 business plan competition has come about through the efforts of its founder, Don Rainey ('82), along with Russell "Rusty" Shepard ('86) and more than 90 other JMU alumni and business professionals. Not only have they provided financial support, they have also given generously of their time and expertise in the judging of the event.

Awards to students this year totaled $25,000. Rite of passage Tied to the intense 12-credit COB300 gateway course requiring student teams to create a business plan while learning the fundamentals of finance, management, marketing and operations, the competition has become a student rite of passage.
The 12th annual Jackson-Rainey Business Plan Competition was founded by JMU alumni Don Rainey ('82), general partner of Grotech Capital Ventures and Jackson Wayne ('85), CEO of Sonatype. The Rainey-Shepard COB 300 Business Plan Competition is now endowed with over $1 million and provides $30,000 in scholarships annually to participants. "The business plan competition is an opportunity for students to showcase what they learn, and it highlights the quality of education at JMU," he said.
