The bottom line: Consumers may be cutting their cable television cords, but cable internet is alive and kicking. And for small-business owners, cable from providers like Spectrum lets you run your online business operations at high speeds and reasonable costs.

So is Spectrum internet a good investment for your business? According to our research, that depends on what type of business you run.

Spectrum Business is best for businesses that want stellar TV packages

Spectrum offers several enticing internet bundles that include cable TV packages. Businesses that need to keep customers entertained while they wait, shop, or eat have the most to gain by taking advantage of these bundles.

But even for other company types, solo cable internet plans from Spectrum aren’t too shabby. That’s because the plans are fast and affordable, with no data caps, and they include lots of tantalizing tech features.

If you’re looking for a cheap internet option, you can’t do much better than Spectrum’s $49.99 per month Spectrum Internet plan. This plan gets you download speeds up to 300/10 Mbps (wireless speeds may vary).

On the other hand, if it’s speed you crave, consider the Spectrum Internet Ultra plan. For $94.99 per month, your download speeds jump up to 600 Mbps (depending on your area) with upload speeds around 35 Mbps (wireless speeds may vary). At those rates, you can connect several more devices and more easily download and upload large files.

Things to consider about Spectrum

Broadband cable debuted in the mid-twentieth century as a way to deliver television to viewers, but it wasn’t until the 1990s that the technology was repurposed for high-speed internet . 1 Since Spectrum (a Charter Communications brand) acquired Time Warner Cable in 2016, 2 the company has expanded its broadband cable and other internet services across the United States.

Above, we told you what we like about Spectrum—and there’s a lot of likes to give. But what about the not-so-greats? Here’s a rundown of the good and bad of Spectrum business internet.

Although cable internet can get you faster download speeds than many competitors in the DSL internet game , Spectrum’s cable upload speeds are unimpressive. The fastest upload speed Spectrum advertises is 35 Mbps, but that's a maximum upload speed—not an average. That means your actual upload speeds may not be that high.

Upload speeds are important for avoiding interruptions with large-file downloads and backups, VoIP service , videoconferences, and running cloud-based applications. If your business needs these services, you may run into trouble with Spectrum’s cable internet plans.

You should also be wary of Spectrum’s low customer satisfaction ratings, as reported by several organizations.

Ultimately, there are several things to like and dislike about Spectrum, so consider your business priorities before making a decision.

Spectrum Business Internet speeds and pricing

Spectrum offers a simple suite of internet plans—an upside or downside, depending on what you’re looking for. Cable internet plans range in download speeds up to 1,000 Mbps (wireless speeds may vary). Spectrum also offers fiber plans, but—as we’ll explain—details about fiber service are limited.

Comparing cable internet plans and pricing

Starting at 300 Mbps download speeds, Spectrum cable comes in many flavors: Spectrum Internet 300, Ultra, and Gig. As we mentioned above, the upload speeds are lackluster, but the download speeds pack a punch.

Data effective 12/7/22. At publishing time, pricing and speeds are current but are subject to change. Offers may not be available in all areas.

Fiber internet plans

Spectrum is building a fiber-optic network across the United States, so you may be able to snag one of these lightning-speed plans in your area. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to dig up particular plan and pricing details, but we did find a list of Spectrum fiber coverage maps .

Check out the maps to see if Spectrum fiber-optic internet has reached your business’s location, and then contact the company at 1-888-692-8635 to learn more.

Bundles and packages: Keep customers connected and entertained

Internet service providers love to offer bundles—and not just for residential customers. They’re savvy enough to know that if they offer discounts for combined services, you may be tempted to take advantage of the deal.

Fortunately, Spectrum’s business bundles are worth considering. These packages combine reasonably fast internet with long-distance calling or TV services—or both.

Data effective 12/7/22. At publishing time, pricing and speeds are current but are subject to change. Offers may not be available in all areas. *Price guaranteed for 12 months when you bundle.

Technology: Extra useful and extra free

One shining facet of Spectrum’s prism of internet services is all the technology the company throws in for free. There are also a few paid services you can buy to truly tailor your business internet experience.

From cloud backups to web hosting, here are all the tech upgrades we found Spectrum serving up.

Free services

Paid services, reliability and support: nothing out of the ordinary.

You should be able to count on a reliable connection from your business internet provider. Service outages—or downtime—result in interruptions to essential operations like email, file sharing, and point-of-sale systems.

Let’s see what kind of reliability you can expect from Spectrum business class internet.

Uptime and latency: Down with downtime

Uptime is the percentage of time you can expect working internet, and Spectrum guarantees business internet uptime at 99.9%. That figure sounds nearly perfect, but there are higher uptime guarantees in the industry, like 99.99% uptime.

What does that mean in real time? Take a look at how several uptime guarantees translate into seconds, minutes, or hours of downtime over longer periods.

Latency is another marker of reliability. Sometimes called lag, latency is the amount of time it takes for a packet of data to make a round trip from one internet connection point to another. High latency—measured in milliseconds—is an especially noticeable problem when streaming video or conducting video conferences.

We didn’t find any information about Spectrum’s average latency, nor do they offer any latency guarantees. If latency is a top concern for your business, consider a company— such as Verizon —that offers a latency guarantee.

Technical support: Help anytime you need it

If something goes wrong with your internet connection or you’re not getting the service you expect, you need quick access to technical support.

Spectrum offers 24/7, US-based technical support by phone for its business customers. The company also provides a collection of Spectrum Business Support articles and answers to common technical questions.

Customer service: Poor ratings and reviews

Several national organizations are in the business of surveying internet service provider customers and reporting their findings to the public. Here are some recent ratings the industry gave Spectrum, which—spoiler alert—left us disappointed.

ACSI: In 2020, Spectrum received a 63 out of 100 from The American Customer Satisfaction Index—just under the average score. 3

BBB: Spectrum isn’t accredited by the Better Business Bureau and has an D rating. 4 Spectrum also stumbled from several government actions against it, including New York’s revocation of an approved merger between Charter and Time-Warner Cable.

J.D. Power: Across all three business segments reviewed by J.D. Power in 2020, Spectrum scored fairly low. The ISP ranked fifth place out of eight for very small businesses, fifth place out of seven for small and midsize businesses, and sixth place out of six for large enterprise businesses. 5

To be fair, most internet companies have a poor reputation in the United States, but even by the industry’s low standards, Spectrum ranks on the lower end.

Spectrum vs. top competitors

Data as of 4/20/23. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

The fine print: Fees, contracts, and equipment

Before signing up with any provider, make sure you understand any costs and other details beyond the sticker price. Up next is a breakdown of Spectrum’s fees, contracts, and equipment.

Spectrum charges a one-time activation fee of $99 for its cable internet service, which is lower than several competitors we’ve reviewed. We couldn't find any information on possible termination fees.

Spectrum Business class has some contract-free options. The only other business ISP we reviewed that offers no-contract business internet is AT&T, which offers the perk only for fiber plans.

What’s more, Spectrum will buy out your contract —up to $500—with your current provider, making the switch even easier.

You also have 30 days to try out Spectrum business internet. If you’re not satisfied, just contact Spectrum before those 30 days are up, return your equipment, and you’ll get a refund for the plan charges. However, the refund doesn’t include the $99 installation fee.

Unlike most business internet service providers, Spectrum will lease you a cable modem for free. This may make up for the fact that the company doesn’t allow you to use your own modem or TV equipment, even when trying out the limited-time offer.

Wondering if Spectrum allows self-installation with your account credentials? Read our FAQ section below.

The takeaway

Unless poor customer satisfaction ratings are a deal breaker, Spectrum is an affordable and fast option for your small business.

Lagging customer reviews are worth thinking twice about before you sign up your business for Spectrum internet. But because these plans come with contract-free options, if you experience serious trouble, it’s possible that you can simply cancel under Spectrum’s terms and conditions. Also, there are plenty of other great ISP options out there.

FAQs about Spectrum business internet

You might still have questions about business internet from Spectrum. Maybe our research will help answer your concerns.

Spectrum offers two Wi-Fi options for business customers. The first is free and allows you to set-up a basic Wi-Fi network for employees and customers. However, this connection isn’t monitored by Spectrum and is less secure than managed Wi-Fi.

The other option is managed Wi-Fi for business, which Spectrum offers for a fee. This service lets you set up a secure wireless network that your customers and employees log in to. Spectrum technicians—available 24/7—monitor your managed hotspots and Wi-Fi speeds for security and performance. The service can also scale to fit the physical size of your buildings.

If you’re looking to shave off some up-front costs, you may want to consider self-installation. Spectrum advises you to take the following steps to install your own business internet:

  • Contact Spectrum to find out if your plan is eligible for self-installation. Ask whether there are surcharges to install your own connection.
  • Order a self-installation kit, which includes a welcome and installation guide plus a modem, power cord, coax cable, ethernet cable, and splitter. You may also pick up your kit at a Spectrum store .
  • Once your service is active, connect your equipment following the details in your welcome kit or this online installation guide with video .

What's the difference between Charter, Spectrum, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House?

Spectrum is the brand name Charter Communications uses for its broadband communications services, including phone, TV, and internet. In 2016, Charter made two big acquisitions for approximately $71 billion: Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks. With this mega-merger, Charter internet grew its customer base to 25 million, expanding its footprint to 41 states and earning it second place in the US broadband internet market share. 6

Cable vs. DSL internet: Which is better?

Depending on your business’s area, you may have the option to choose between a cable business internet service provider—like Spectrum—or one that offers high-speed internet via digital subscriber line (DSL).

The truth is that neither internet type is better—each has its advantages and disadvantages. The better choice is whichever offers the best solution for you and your business’s needs.

Here are the main advantages and disadvantages of cable internet:

Cable internet uses coaxial cables, just like the ones used to deliver cable television to millions of customers and connect to your business using a cable modem. Meanwhile, DSL internet is provided over the same copper wires used to provide phone lines. But unlike dial-up internet, DSL doesn’t interfere with phone service.

Here are the key advantages and disadvantages of DSL internet:

Spectrum Business Internet Review and Pricing

Table of contents.

spectrum internet business plans

Spectrum Business Internet is a reliable and affordable no-annual-contract fiber connectivity service with add-on options for private business Wi-Fi and wireless backup. It’s an excellent choice for business owners seeking month-to-month plans.

  • Spectrum has simple, high-speed fiber plans with month-to-month contracts.
  • There are no data caps or speed throttling with Spectrum internet.
  • The vendor offers bundled discounts for internet, phone, mobile and television services.
  • Spectrum’s maximum upload speed of 35 Mbps could be too slow for some people.
  • With a minimum speed of 300 Mbps, it feels like the company is missing an entry-level plan for businesses without demanding internet needs.
  • There’s no option for a dedicated internet connection through Spectrum.

Spectrum keeps its business internet service simple by offering three fiber plans with download speeds of up to 300 Mbps, 600 Mbps and 1 Gbps, none of which require an annual contract. If you only care about download speeds with your fiber connection, Spectrum is more affordable compared to rivals AT&T, Comcast and Verizon. You needn’t worry about sacrificing reliability either, which is usually listed at 99.9 percent with any dedicated internet or fiber provider like Spectrum. Spectrum’s add-on options include wireless backup internet, static IP addresses and a business Wi-Fi connection with the latest router. All of the company’s business internet packages include 24/7 U.S.-based customer support and a 30-day, money-back guarantee. If you switch from another internet service provider (ISP), you may even be able to receive up to $1,000 to help with early-termination fees. For these reasons, Spectrum is the best option for business owners seeking month-to-month internet service.

Spectrum Business Editor's Rating:

Why we chose spectrum for month-to-month contracts.

Avoiding lengthy software and service commitments is critical for lean and flexible businesses with strict budget controls. Spectrum grants businesses the freedom of a month-to-month broadband internet contract with the assurance of a 12-month price guarantee to plan for the future accordingly. Spectrum’s simple billing approach is also reflected in its three straightforward fiber internet offerings, with download/upload speeds of 300/10 Mbps, 600/35 Mbps and 1 Gbps/35 Mbps. While you can also find month-to-month fiber-optic network options with AT&T, you’ll likely pay a higher rate for the inclusion of faster upload speeds that you may not require.

Month-to-month options like those provided by Spectrum are also great for home offices and remote workers who don’t feel comfortable committing to an annual or multiyear contract. We also appreciate that while the vendor offers residential and business plans, anyone with a residential address in an area supported by Spectrum can purchase one of the business internet plans.

Types of internet services include dial-up, DSL, fixed wireless and cable, but fiber-optic internet is typically the fastest.

Spectrum Business Features

Simplicity, fast fiber speeds and low monthly prices are what make Spectrum such an attractive ISP, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without a few other important connectivity features offered by larger, more expensive companies. However, be aware that Spectrum’s upload speed caps at 10 Mbps for its lowest plan and 35 Mbps with its mid- and top-tier plans. For media-focused companies or large offices conducting webinars for big groups, these slower upload speeds could present an issue. Fortunately, for most business users, this won’t be a significant concern, as the internet speed your business needs varies by company.

Wireless Internet Backup

You can avoid interruptions to critical tools like point-of-sale systems and credit card readers with a wireless internet backup option. Spectrum’s wireless, battery-powered LTE modem can keep your business running during a power outage thanks to its automatic backup connection and unlimited data to support up to four devices for more than eight hours. Once power is restored, your connection will automatically revert to its standard settings. You can add this backup service to your Spectrum Business Internet plan for $20 per month, without any additional fees or equipment charges. Comcast has a similar backup offering that can power operations for up to 16 hours, but as noted in our review of Comcast’s business internet , it’ll set you back $39.95 each month.

Spectrum backup modem

All Spectrum Business Internet clients receive 25 licenses for F-Secure Desktop Security software. This online security solution for Mac and Windows devices provides real-time protection against cyber threats, including spyware, malware and hacker intrusions, with automatic updates. F-Secure is a Finland-based cybersecurity company founded in 1998; it has a global network of more than 170 partners representing 16 million protected customers. [Learn how to understand cyber risks .]

Business Wi-Fi

Spectrum Business Internet users can add on secure business Wi-Fi with the latest router for $7.99 per month. You can use your Wi-Fi network to securely connect all of your business devices and offer visiting customers a separate secure connection. However, if you’d prefer to purchase a compatible high-speed router for your Wi-Fi network, you could spend around $100 to $500 for the equipment and avoid the recurring monthly fee that Spectrum charges.

For smaller offices without an abundance of tech-savvy staff, the Spectrum-managed Wi-Fi hardware is likely the better choice.

Static IP Addresses

Spectrum offers static IP addresses as one of its add-on services, but you’ll have to speak with a sales representative for a custom price quote. Unlike the dynamic IP addresses most often included with internet service, static IP addresses do not change. Once a device like a computer is assigned a static IP address, the address doesn’t change until it’s decommissioned from your network. With a static IP address, businesses can make it easier for remote employees to securely connect to a virtual private network (VPN), use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone systems and manage DNS servers. [See our picks for the best business phone systems .]

Spectrum Business Pricing

While speed and costs for all business ISPs can vary by region, we found Spectrum to be among the least-expensive fiber service providers. What makes the company stand out even more is its month-to-month contracts. We love that Spectrum doesn’t lock you into a long-term agreement. That flexibility can be very important in a world where business needs are always changing.

Spectrum’s three business internet plans all include the same 24/7/365 dedicated support, 99.9 percent network reliability, free Wi-Fi for your customers, 25 email addresses with a custom domain name and a 30-day, money-back guarantee. Beyond that, the chart below outlines how the plans compare in speed and price.

Business owners can add private, secure Wi-Fi to their business internet package to connect employee devices with Spectrum’s newest router for $7.99 per month. Pricing for other add-ons, including wireless internet backup and static IP addresses, is not publicly listed and requires contacting the company. Impressively, in addition to its money-back guarantee, Spectrum will offer you up to $1,000 to help with early-termination fees if you’re switching from another provider.

Spectrum’s willingness to buy out your current internet contract (up to $1,000) isn’t something you’ll see with every major ISP.

Implementation

Spectrum internet customers can make an installation appointment for the same day they sign up for the service or the following day if there’s availability, but it typically takes “no more than a week from the day you make your purchase,” according to a Spectrum representative. That’s faster than some competitors, including AT&T and Verizon. The implementation itself could take anywhere between one and three hours to complete, while service calls generally take about an hour.

After you place an order and schedule your installation appointment, you can elect to receive notifications by email, text or phone, which you’ll need to confirm your appointment with some services. If you select email as your form of communication, you may need to call to confirm some service appointments. The day before your appointment, you should receive a reminder notification, and if you don’t confirm, you’ll receive another reminder on the day of your appointment.

Customer Service

You can call Spectrum directly to get started with the buying process or fill out an online form to request a sales representative call you. Associates are available Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET. When we spoke with the provider’s staffers, we received knowledgeable responses that helped us explore the available offerings.

All Spectrum Business plans include 24-hour dedicated, U.S.-based support every day of the year as well as advanced access to on-site technicians. If you’re having an issue with your business connection, a customer service representative can first attempt to troubleshoot it remotely. If a remote solution cannot be found, an on-site service technician will address the problem in person.

If you’d prefer to resolve any issues on your own, the company has an online Spectrum Business Support & Help Center. This database houses numerous guides, educational articles, FAQs and tools, like the Spectrum Speed Test, which can measure your upload and download speeds. There are also step-by-step instructions for various troubleshooting procedures.

Limitations

Though Spectrum’s pricing and monthly contracts are appealing, we’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that the vendor’s fiber upload speeds are far behind those of competitors, including AT&T and Verizon. Spectrum’s fastest upload speed is 35 Mbps, while AT&T and Verizon can achieve over 800 Mbps for large file transfers or video conferences . When we talked with Spectrum’s product specialists, we were told faster upload speeds and synchronous speeds are in the works with a 10 Gbps network planned for the future, but not every business owner may be willing to wait.

Additionally, Spectrum doesn’t offer any dedicated internet plans. Businesses that need a dedicated internet plan with constant access to cloud applications to connect global offices and increase security should consider AT&T and Verizon. Find out why in our review of AT&T and our Verizon review .

Though Spectrum’s relatively low upload speeds of 10 and 35 Mbps are a drawback, they’re not likely to cause connectivity issues for most business users.

Methodology

To determine the best business internet service providers , we researched and analyzed a variety of companies. As part of this process, we spoke to product specialists when possible, and we compared and contrasted different aspects across vendors, such as pricing, the installation process, speed and connectivity type, additional services, and the quality of customer support. For most businesses without demanding uploading requirements, Spectrum shines as a cost-effective ISP with no long-term contracts, data caps or speed throttling.

How are Spectrum Residential and Spectrum Business different?

Spectrum Residential and Spectrum Business are different in the products available and the types of services they offer. For example, Spectrum’s business customers have access to 24/7 dedicated support and on-site technicians. Spectrum’s business plans also include Wi-Fi for your customers, 25 email addresses with a custom domain name and desktop security software. Notably, you can opt for a business internet account at a residential address.

Is Spectrum Business Internet reliable?

Yes, Spectrum Business Internet is reliable. The company boasts of 99.9 percent network reliability, which is on par with other major ISPs, including AT&T and Verizon.

Where does Spectrum offer service?

Spectrum offers business internet service in 41 states.

Bottom Line

We recommend Spectrum Business Internet for …

  • Business owners who want to keep their internet plans flexible without long-term service contracts.
  • Businesses looking for the highest fiber speeds at the lowest cost.
  • Companies that want to bundle internet, phone and television services at a discounted rate.

We don’t recommend Spectrum’s Business Internet for …

  • Business owners who want a guaranteed price for multiple years.
  • Businesses that require a dedicated internet plan.
  • Organizations, such as media enterprises, that could be hampered by a maximum upload speed of 35 Mbps.

We often overlook the big impact of small businesses. While the Wall Street gurus and venture capitalists monitor every move of large corporations and high-growth companies, the value created by mom-and-pop stores, home-based online businesses, and boutiques is hardly discussed in economic forums. The rest of the world can forget, but Spectrum acknowledges that 50 percent of the country’s wealth is generated by self-employed individuals and independently owned specialty businesses.

Spectrum Business Internet caters to this unique subclass of broadband consumers who neither fit the description of residential customers nor can be offered leased lines reserved for large enterprises.

In this review, we will look at the Spectrum Business Internet plans and see how their prices, perks, and performance accelerate small business growth.

Overview of Spectrum Internet for Business

Spectrum Business Internet is a dedicated broadband service for small and medium business owners. Initially, the service was offered exclusively to commercial spaces, like offices, warehouses, and stores. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, Spectrum saw a potential customer base in home business owners and remote workers. The plans were modified to meet the demands for high speeds, increased reliability, and affordability. Increased attention was given to the pain points of businesses. As a result, each Spectrum Business Internet plan includes a static IP address, a domain name, custom email IDs, cyber security for up to 25 devices, business WiFi, and more.

Spectrum’s business internet service starts at $49.99 per month, and customers can receive download speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps with unlimited data and contract-free service. The business-exclusive plans can be accessed in all 41 states where Spectrum offers broadband coverage. Currently, close to 10 million freelancers, startups, home-based businesses, and small-to-medium enterprises are subscribed to one of the three Spectrum Business Internet plans and enjoying 99.9 percent reliability on the hybrid fiber-cable network.

These internet plans can be bundled with cable TV, mobile phone, and telephone services for as low as $124.96 per month (for 12 months) to ensure businesses can access 360-degree connectivity for next-level productivity.

Spectrum Business Internet Plans & Pricing

Spectrum’s business customers are so diverse that they resemble a kaleidoscope of commercial activity. From eBay merchandise seller moms to regional banks, over a million registered businesses in the USA have made Spectrum Business Internet their trusted business partner. Spectrum quickly acknowledged that a one-size-fits-all approach was not workable for its mixed customer pool.

The solution was presented in the form of three tiers of internet speeds, which were appropriately priced to meet the specific needs of every business. Business owners can choose between 300 Mbps, 600 Mbps, and 1,000 Mbps to get the download speed that best fits the purpose and budget of their company.

So, let’s look at the three Spectrum Business Internet plans in detail and see if you can decide which speed tier fits your business the best.

Spectrum Business Internet

Spectrum Business Internet is the entry-level plan. It is what gets businesses started on their journey to commercial success. For a monthly fee of $64.99, businesses get download speeds of up to 300 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 10 Mbps. The plan includes a cutting-edge internet modem, uncapped data, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and advanced business features that are over $50 in value.

Annual term agreements (contracts) are not a prerequisite for subscribing to this plan. Customers are free to upgrade to higher speed tiers or even cancel the service if they feel Spectrum Business Internet is not offering them the expected value.

Subscribers can combine their broadband with the Spectrum Voice service to get up to $15 in monthly savings. However, the starting prices of standalone internet service and its bundle deal are only valid for the first 12 months. In the second year, the price jacks up by $35 per month, which can bring your total bill to $84.99 for the Spectrum Business Internet and Business Voice services.

All in all, the Spectrum Business Internet is an ideal low-cost starter plan for businesses that are changing the country’s socio-economic landscape with a 5-member team.

Spectrum Business Internet Ultra

An ultra connection for the ultras in the business community. That’s right! Catered to the needs of the revolutionaries, the Spectrum Business Internet Ultra plan offers superfast download speeds of up to 600 Mbps and an upload speed of 20 Mbps with 99.9 percent network reliability. For $114.99 per month, the Internet Ultra plan ensures that the right tools, people, and knowledge needed to propel your business forward are just a click away.

Spectrum Business Internet Ultra’s $115 price tag includes a compatible DOCSIS 3.1 modem, a 30-day free trial, a contract-free service, and unlimited data throughout the month. The freebie bucket becomes extra-loaded with personalized gifts, such as email IDs, domain names, hard-coded IPs, and antivirus software.

This plan is the perfect combo of wide bandwidths and low-cost connectivity. Placed in the middle of Spectrum’s lowest and highest speed tiers, Spectrum Business Internet Ultra promises moderation to mid-sized businesses with its mid-tier asymmetric speeds

Spectrum Business Internet Gig

And if you decide to go big, choose the Spectrum Business Internet Gig plan. It is the premium speed tier for companies with more than 20 employees. The introductory fee of the Internet Gig plan is $164.99 per month. Within this price, you get 1,000 Mbps on the down, up to 35 Mbps on the upstream, limitless data, and a no-contract service.

Spectrum Business Internet Gig customers enjoy the same level of comfort and security as their 300 Mbps and 600 Mbps counterparts. They, too, receive a welcome hamper filled with security-encrypted business WiFi, custom emails, static IPs, and antivirus licenses. To add cherry on top, they get battery-operated wireless internet backup for running the business smoothly during network outages. So, even when the internet is down, you never miss a beat on your sales because the backup automatically activates to offer seamless connectivity for up to 8 hours.

Customers can avail of savings of up to $180 in the promo period of 12 months by bundling their broadband with the Spectrum Business Voice service because a brand is nothing without its distinct voice.

Spectrum Business Internet Bundles

Spectrum is a one-stop shop for thousands of businesses that need one fluff-free solution for all their telecom needs. Instead of complicating the startup journey for game changers and rule breakers of commerce, Spectrum offers them a straightforward all-in-one deal that guarantees holistic digital connectivity. The Spectrum Business Internet plans can be combined with the Business TV, Voice, and Mobile services for mega savings of up to $55 per month.

So, let’s look at some of the most popular business internet bundles offered by Spectrum that can catapult your business to new heights while keeping the operational costs to a minimum.

Spectrum Business Internet and Voice Bundles

Companies can stack a voice-over protocol (VoIP) phone service on top of their broadband plans to get discounts of up to $25 per month. The standalone price of Spectrum Business Voice is $29.99 per month for one line, but when you purchase Spectrum Business Internet and Voice together, the price for the phone line reduces to $19.99 per month, and the starting price of the internet drops to $49.99 per month instead of the $64.99 charge.

The Voice service includes unlimited nationwide calling, more than 35 advanced calling features, and a free business phone number that can solidify your brand’s presence.

Spectrum Business Internet and TV Bundles

From multinational corporations to mom-and-pop eateries, millions of businesses in the USA install a TV in their waiting rooms, cafeterias, and conference halls. The idea is to entertain the waiting guests, relax the dining employees, and connect with industry leaders via video calls. For this reason, Spectrum provides a custom-built cable TV service to businesses. The Spectrum Business TV plans are available at three varying prices.

Spectrum TV Packages for Businesses

The Spectrum TV plans for businesses start at $24.99 per month, and you can get up to 90 HD channels, including all the top-rated news, sports, and entertainment networks. The channel lineup can be customized to carry seasonal sports channels and Spanish language programming for as low as $9.99 per month.

By bundling their Spectrum Business Internet plan with a Business TV package, commercial account holders can get discounts of up to $15+ in a month. This is because the bundled price of Spectrum Business Internet is $15 cheaper than its standalone monthly fee.

Spectrum Business Internet and Mobile Bundles

The super saver Spectrum One offering is now available to business customers. For a year, Spectrum Business Internet subscribers will get one free Spectrum Mobile Unlimited line to stay digitally connected while on the road.

The Spectrum Mobile Unlimited plan costs $29.99 per month and includes unlimited 5G data and countless calls and texts to any number within the country. But when purchased with the Spectrum Business Internet, it is offered for free for a promo period of 12 months.

How to Choose the Best Spectrum Internet Plan for Business?

Selecting the correct internet speeds for your new business or upscaled venture is easier said than done. Businesses often misjudge their speed requirements and get trapped in overpriced contract-based plans, or sign up for entry-level plans that are too slow for their heavy-duty online activities. To save you from this predicament, we have devised a 3-step criteria. You can use these 3 key indicators to assess your bandwidth needs and choose an appropriate Spectrum Business Internet plan for your company.

Step 1: Determine the File Types and Sizes

First, you must carefully review the kind of files that you and your peers frequently share among yourself and with your stakeholders. Images and video files are comparatively heavier than audio and text files. So, if the data transfer is mostly in the form of jpeg and mp4 file types, it is advisable to subscribe to higher bandwidths and expedite the uploading and downloading procedures.

Step 2: Identify the Most-Used Applications for Your Business

You must ascertain the go-to applications for your business and find out the average speed requirements for each. For example, if you and your staff heavily rely on Zoom video calls for your business-related communications, you will need at least 200 Mbps on the down and 25 Mbps on the up for a 50-member Zoom meeting in high-definition.

Step 3: Count and Lock the Number of Devices on the Network

Last but not least, please count all the devices connected to the Spectrum Business Internet network. This will include desktops, laptops, tablets, and cell phones. The bandwidth of your internet plan should be able to handle simultaneous connectivity on all these devices. For example, the 300 Mbps speed tier can support up to 20 devices, but if you upgrade to the Internet Gig plan, you can simultaneously connect 80 devices and more to the network.

The table below highlights the impact of internet speeds on the download time of files of different sizes and types.

It should take a few minutes to pick the ideal Spectrum Business Internet plan once you have figured out your 3 keys.

Perks of Spectrum Internet for Business

Come for the speeds, stay for the perks! Spectrum Business Internet plans provide all the essentials that you would expect to receive in an executive suite. Added to fulfill the needs of business-class customers, these perks will make cruising on the highs of your success an everyday deal.

Free for 30

All the Spectrum Business Internet plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee. New customers can test drive the service and avail of all the accompanied benefits for the first 30 days. Upon an unsatisfactory experience, they will get a full refund, as long as they send their cancellation request to Spectrum within 30 days of enrolment. Spectrum’s 30-day free trial for business customers also ensures that businesses have ample time to test and decide whether the chosen speeds are the right fit for their company’s needs. Since there are no annual term commitments, customers can easily switch between plans and upgrade or downgrade their internet speeds within this trial period.

Avoid Hiccups with Wireless Internet Backup

Did you know that small businesses can lose up to $427 in one minute of network downtime, while the loss for larger businesses can be as high as $16,000 per minute? Spectrum Business Internet customers get a free wireless internet backup to keep their operations running smoothly during network or power outages. A battery-powered LTE modem automatically switches on when the mains shut down to provide unlimited data for up to 8 hours. Spectrum’s wireless internet backup can offer connectivity on 4 essential devices with 99.9 percent reliability to ensure that you continue to mint money while the world around you turns dark.

Surf Worry-Free with Desktop Security

The success of a business is dependent on its trade secrets. In the wrong hands, the same information can be misused and lead to the company’s collapse. Luckily, all three-speed tiers of Spectrum Internet for businesses come with free antivirus licenses for up to 25 desktops. Features such as malware detection, blocking spam emails, and real-time protection against cyber attacks shield the company’s private and confidential information from miscreants.

Custom Identity for Business Reliability

A domain name is the online identity of a business. With a relevant domain name, companies can establish trust and create more visibility for their brand. When businesses sign up for a business Internet plan, they are offered a domain name for free. If they choose to accept the suggested domain name, Spectrum allows them 25 email IDs that are registered with the given domain name.

Static IP and More for Business Galore

Spectrum Business Internet customers get a free static IP address for one primary device. The unchanging IP address of the device gives the user the freedom to work remotely and still access websites that are restricted in his or her geographical location. In addition, when companies subscribe to any of the internet plans, they get secured access to a Business-only WiFi network. It helps businesses keep their network hidden and protected from visitors, freeloaders, and hackers.

Spectrum Business Internet Availability

Spectrum Business Internet is available throughout Spectrum’s 41-state footprint. It is believed that out of Spectrum’s 30.6 million broadband internet customers, at least one-third of the subscribers are small and medium-sized enterprises. With more than 800 thousand miles of hybrid fiber-cable network infrastructure, Spectrum is the second-largest provider of cable internet for businesses.

Spectrum’s  Business Internet plans are widely accessible in the following 41 states of the USA.

The coverage area of Spectrum Business Internet is over 90 percent in the following 10 cities. Nearly 14.1 million people within these top 10 cities can access at least 150.88 Mbps of download speeds on their business internet plans.

Spectrum Business Internet Customer Service

Small businesses get an express pass when they sign up for the Spectrum Business Internet plans. They are automatically redirected to a priority customer service where a specialist is waiting to assist them with their queries. In the case of technical issues, billing inquiries, or service upgrades, customers can call the Spectrum Business Support desk and speak to US-based experts working round-the-clock to deliver exceptional service.

Apart from a dedicated helpline, customers can use the live chat feature on the Spectrum web portal for quick questions. Or they can access Spectrum Business’s Support Hub for readable guides and tutorials related to Spectrum Business services (Internet, TV, Mobile, and Voice), as well as accounts and billing.

In the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Business Wireline Satisfaction Study , Spectrum secured 6th position in the medium business segment and 5th spot in the category of small businesses. Even with below-segment average scores of 803 and 759 on a 1000-point scale, Spectrum Business Internet is undeterred and focuses on “personalized services, dedicated account representatives, and solid communications” to enhance reliability and performance for small-to-medium-sized businesses.

Spectrum’s Business Internet and related services can be ordered online or over call between 8:00 AM and 11:00 PM (eastern time).

Spectrum Business Internet vs. Competitors

Choosing the right business partner is one of the most important decisions you will make as an entrepreneur. With a reliable business partner by your side, you can achieve your goals more quickly and efficiently. But if you pick the wrong business partner, you could lose more than what you had put on the line.

Your professional relationship with your business internet provider is no less than a joint venture. You will need seamless high-speed connectivity to manage your business communications effectively. Therefore, your choice of business internet will directly affect your company’s performance.

Spectrum Business Internet is one of the leading broadband providers for small and medium enterprises. But as its availability is limited to a select few metros across 41 states, you may want to consider the following top-ranking business internet providers for your stores and offices.

Best Internet Providers for Business

AT&T Business Internet is our favorite, but there are a lot of great options

You know what’s even more frustrating than finding home internet? Finding business internet!

The internet you choose for your business affects its efficiency, expansion, and bottom line. So which service to choose?

We're here to help you figure that out with five excellent recommendations for various business internet needs.

Guide to business internet:

  • What to look for
  • AT&T Business: Best overall
  • Spectrum Business: Best extras
  • Comcast Business: Most options
  • Frontier Business: Best high-speed internet
  • CenturyLink Business: Lowest cost

Methodology

What to look for in business internet.

There's a marked difference between residential and business internet. With residential internet, you only need to cater to you and your family's needs. With business internet, you'll consider the business' and its employees' needs.

Here’s what to look for when picking an internet service for your business.

  • Reliability
  • Availability
  • Scalability

Price is always crucial, but it's even more important to a business. The right price balances on the edge of a knife. Spend too much, and you'll cut into your profits. Spend too little, and you may not get the speedy and reliable connection you need to make your business successful.

You also probably want faster speeds for business internet than at home. You know that gig internet service we always say you don't need in your house? Well, you may want it for your business, primarily if you work in a media-rich field. Remember that your service's actual speeds may not align with its promised speeds, so it's good to buy on the high end of your acceptable speed range.

When choosing a connection speed, you want to account for every work device on the premises, but you may also need to consider Wi-Fi needs for employees’ and visitors’ personal devices. In some cases, you may want to set up a separate, slower guest Wi-Fi for personal use.

You also want an internet connection you can rely on during business hours. In most cases, a fiber or cable internet connection is the most reliable option.

Your chosen internet service also needs to be available where you live. Not every service provider is present in every area—especially fiber providers . If you live in a densely populated area with many homes and businesses, like New York, you're more likely to have access to fiber internet. If you live in a rural area, you're unlikely to have access to fiber and may need to see if you can find some satellite or fixed wireless options for business.

Finally, think about scalability, otherwise known as “Can this internet connection grow with my company as it expands?” If the answer is no, you’ll be fine if you’re okay with switching providers in the future. But if you want a longstanding partnership, you need a service that can handle your business’s projected growth.

The difference between business and residential internet is in the plans. Residential internet is usually slower than business internet because fewer people and devices typically connect to it.

You can get business internet at home, which is great if you run an at-home business, but it's unlikely that you can get residential internet at an office. And why would you want to? Fast business internet, especially fast fiber business internet, may be the key to success.

Either way, if you’re self-employed or work from home, you may be able to claim your internet as a business expense.

AT&T Business Internet: Best overall

An AT&T Business Internet fiber plan is an all-around excellent option for your growing business. AT&T’s fiber internet is superfast (going up to 5Gbps) and even has symmetrical speeds and unlimited data with some plans. It also ranks first in the American Consumer Satisfaction Index for 2022 .

AT&T Business Internet runs more expensive than its competitors (at least initially). The cheapest plan starts at $75 for 300Mbps. But with the most expensive plan, you get roughly 16 times the speed at three times the price—an increased value for sure.

AT&T’s business plans use a reliable fiber connection, and the speed goes up to 5,000Mbps. That’s unheard of in a home internet connection and eye-popping even in the business sector. And what’s more, you’ll get unlimited data and symmetrical speed with those five gigs, meaning the upload speed will equal the download speed. You’ll both send and receive high-res media files with ease.

As the ACSI score suggests, AT&T fiber internet gets excellent customer satisfaction, so you'll likely be delighted with your service.

Spectrum Business Internet: Best extras

Spectrum is a solid internet provider we often recommend, and Spectrum Business Internet ups the ante by providing a free domain name, customer email addresses, and internet modem with your plan. That's practically everything you need to start a business! Plus, you can find Spectrum internet in 42 states, so you likely live in a service area.

We do want to point out that Spectrum's plans are substantially more expensive from the get-go than other providers' (and they only go up after 12 months). Instead of thinking of the domain name, emails, and modem as free, it may help to think of the extra cost as paying for those features.

But if that’s still too pricey for you, you may be able to get discounts by bundling the business internet with another Spectrum service—business phone lines, perhaps?

All of Spectrum's plans are high speed , reaching the princely pace of a whole gig. However, Spectrum projects that you can connect fewer employee devices than AT&T. These estimates seem low even with Spectrum's cable connection versus AT&T's fiber. The 300 and 600Mbps plans may go much further than Spectrum says. But if you want to avoid that gamble, select Spectrum internet service only if you have a small business.

Spectrum’s customer service needs a little work, according to the ACSI. The service scored just 64 out of 100. That's low, even for internet providers, which traditionally score beneath other industries.

Comcast Business Internet: Most options

Whether you have a small business or a medium-sized one, Comcast Business Internet has an option for you. Depending on your needs, you can get as few as 50Mbps or as many as 1.25Gbps.

Comcast’s biggest strength is its variety. The wide range of plan speeds gives you great scalability for your business to grow. It’s also available almost everywhere in the United States, making it a viable option for nearly everyone.

Unfortunately, Comcast changes its prices depending on its service area, so we can't guarantee exact costs. But for reference, we've included one of the service's price ranges. You can see that these prices get quite expensive (over $300!), so in some areas, Comcast definitely won't be the best value.

Also, Comcast Business Internet is a cable service, so you may not see as reliable of service as you would get with fiber plans. Still, your connection should be stable.

Surprisingly, Comcast, which is legendary for its terrible customer service, doesn’t rank that low with the ACSI. Its score of 68 ranks it above some of the other brands we recommend.

Frontier: Best high-speed internet

Ka-chow! No, it’s not Lightning McQueen that’s going so fast—it’s Frontier Business Internet. After AT&T, our overall pick, Frontier is your best bet for speedy connections.

Frontier's speeds start at 500Mbps, the fastest starting point of our recommended services, and go up to 2,000Mbps. The starting price is a little high ($65), but the value of the plans gets progressively better, especially considering that you get a fiber connection. Also, a router comes with each plan, so factor that into the cost.

Frontier doesn't predict how many devices can connect to each plan without overloading the Wi-Fi, but our speed guide will help you figure it out.

Sadly, Frontier is only available in some states, so your opportunities to sign up for the service are limited. This won't be a problem for, as an example, New Yorkers or Utahns—but Montanans will miss out.

The ACSI gives Frontier fiber a 74, which puts it on the higher end for internet customer service but the lower end for fiber satisfaction. So, though you'll get fast service through Frontier, your interactions with the company may need improvement.

CenturyLink Business Internet: Lowest cost

You'll spend less money with CenturyLink as your business internet service provider. CenturyLink offers 940Mbps and symmetrical speeds for $75 a month, which is quite a steal compared to other Wi-Fi providers. And with no contact, you can save money if needed by canceling (for free!) anytime.

Of course, you want more than just cheap internet; you also want reliable internet. For its cheaper plan, CenturyLink uses DSL, a less reliable option. But the provider also has a business fiber plan, which we recommend in most cases, depending on your business needs.

Also, good news: CenturyLink is fairly ubiquitous, so chances are it’s available in your area as a business internet provider.

Like Frontier, CenturyLink doesn’t offer guesstimates of how many devices can use each plan, but the Business Fiber plan should offer exponentially more connections than the other.

CenturyLink gets a 78 in customer satisfaction for its fiber service (coming second after AT&T), while its DSL gets 62 (between Frontier and Spectrum). Looks like you'll be pleased with Business Fiber, but maybe not so much with Simply Unlimited Business Internet.

Recap: Best internet providers for business

  • AT&T Business Internet: When it comes to overall value, AT&T Business Internet is our pick. The speediness, symmetrical speeds, data cap elimination, and customer service reputation make it our top choice—and costly.
  • Spectrum Business: The Spectrum Business Internet fiber service comes with a free domain, email addresses, and modem. However, Spectrum customer satisfaction could be higher.
  • Comcast Business: Comcast Business Internet offers six different plans, giving you plenty of options to address your business’s needs over the years. It’s also rather expensive, especially when you get to the higher speeds.
  • Frontier Business: Things get real speedy with Frontier Business Internet, which goes up to 2,000Mbps. But the service may not be available in your area.
  • CenturyLink Business: CenturyLink Business Internet offers 940Mbps fiber for $75, which is fantastic. The cheaper plan isn't as good a deal, though, so if you don't get the fiber, you should skip this one.

We make sure to consider a bunch of different factors when we recommend an internet service provider, such as:

  • Customer service score

Price and speed are the two things most customers weigh heavily when choosing a service. After all, you want something you can afford but that works well, right?

But that’s not all there is to consider. You also want to know if a service is available in your area. That’s why we either discuss a service’s availability or provide you with a zip check test like the one below.

And finally, we account for the ACSI customer service score, online reviews, current news, and our personal experiences to determine what kind of customer experience you’ll get with each service.

Our Spectrum Internet ® review

Spectrum typically delivers cable internet in areas where it doesn’t overlap other cable providers. It’s faster than DSL internet from providers like AT&T, Frontier, and Verizon—but it’s not the best choice if the competition offers fiber internet.

Spectrum also has fiber-to-the-home internet. It’s installed in “green” locations within its coverage areas: New neighborhoods and business zones not claimed by competing fiber internet providers, like AT&T and Verizon. Spectrum does not install fiber internet service in its existing cable internet neighborhoods.

Overall, Spectrum’s a solid choice if you can overlook some of its questionable fees and lackluster customer support. But, before we begin, I’m a Spectrum customer—a longtime inherited Time Warner Cable customer, in fact. I will compare Spectrum against its competitors and tell you my personal experience as a customer.

Our favorite plan: The base Spectrum® Internet is a solid choice if you only check email, stream a few videos, and post to social media. It’s relatively cheap for the speed you get and even supplies a rent-free modem or gateway to new customers.

Overall, Spectrum keeps your choices simple—there’s no scrolling through a long list to suss out the ideal plan. Spectrum has also tripled its starting speed from 100 Mbps to 300Mbps (wireless speeds may vary) for many areas, making its cheapest plan more enticing to customers on a budget. 1

The Spectrum Internet® Ultra and the Spectrum Internet® Gig plans may offer 12- and 24-month promotions, depending on where you live. There’s no contract involved, and customers can cancel or downgrade at any time—there’s no catch in opting for the longer-term, cheaper pricing. Customer support says the 12- and 24-month options are just “two different promotions.”

Finally, the Spectrum Internet® Gig plan supports download speeds up to 1,000Mbps. The fiber plan has symmetrical speeds, but the cable internet plan can reach up to 500Mbps in limited areas. That’s the fastest upload speed we’ve seen to date for cable internet, making the Gig plan even more enticing now that it has a lower price. But in other areas, the cable upload speed remains at a maximum of 35Mbps.

Spectrum’s speeds: What’s best for you?

Spectrum’s three plans offer a range of speeds that should meet the needs of most homes. The Spectrum Internet® Gig plan is probably overkill for most, but it’s ideal if you work from home and frequently download large files.

The Spectrum Internet® Ultra plan is good for households of around four, although you may feel a speed pinch if others download large files (game updates, etc.) while you stream content from Spectrum TV or some other service.

With the base Spectrum Internet® plan, there’s enough bandwidth for a few people to stream UHD content, play games online, and download media from your favorite services.

Spectrum’s data caps

Spectrum doesn’t enforce a data cap. It also doesn’t charge a fee for unlimited data, as seen with Xfinity—at least, for now.

In 2016, the FCC set a seven-year data cap ban as part of its approval of Charter’s merger with Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks. Spectrum can’t enforce a data cap or usage-based pricing until Charter’s agreement with the FCC expires on May 18, 2023.

However, in June 2020, Charter petitioned to enforce a data cap two years early, but then withdrew the petition in January 2021. 5 6 Charter’s letter to the FCC in August 2020 suggests that some consumers who don’t use lots of data or those who want a cheaper plan may benefit from usage-based pricing and data caps. 7

That said, Spectrum may discontinue its unlimited data in less than a year, taking cues from AT&T, Xfinity, and Cox. We provide a list of internet providers with data caps for more information.

Spectrum internet fees

As a customer, the one fee that’s a real eyesore each month is Spectrum’s WiFi charge. At first glance, it appears to be a monthly lease for its standalone routers. After all, customers don’t lease Spectrum’s modems or gateways.

But no, that fee also applies to its wireless gateways. Customers essentially lease the convenience of WiFi. Plus, if you want to use its WiFi Pod mesh system, you must pay an additional $3 for each unit every month. That can add up if you need whole-home coverage.

We go into more detail in the Why does Spectrum charge a WiFi fee section.

Another eyesore not listed above is the modem rental fee for customers on legacy plans, which persists even though Spectrum advertises free modems. Yes, new customers won’t see the monthly lease—at least for another few years. However, if you were a Time Warner Cable or Bright House Networks customer and never manually switched to an official Spectrum plan, you will continue to pay $10 or $4 per month, respectively, until you do so.

For more information about this fee, jump to the Why do I still see a modem fee on my bill section.

Spectrum internet installation, equipment, and contracts

Spectrum gives you options to self-install internet (if possible) or have a technician come out to get you set up. But you definitely need a pro install if you don’t have existing cable TV lines in your home or building.

Spectrum installation and equipment

Spectrum encourages new customers to opt for self-install over a pro install. You can pick up the equipment from a local Spectrum store or have Spectrum ship the devices to your address. After that, you can find instructions online on how to activate the modem.

But don’t worry—Spectrum’s pro install is still available for new installations for $59.99. Spectrum provides you with a separate modem and router or a single wireless gateway, depending on what’s available at the time.

Spectrum charges $49.99 per hour for any additional labor, and another $49.99 to make a special trip.

Spectrum Internet contracts

Spectrum doesn’t enforce contracts. Instead, it provides discounted pricing for the first 12 or 24 months of service, depending on the plan. You must keep the service for at least one month to get the discounted price. Once the promotion ends, prices increase by at least $20 per month.

Spectrum Internet customer satisfaction ratings

* Rating based on a five (5) point system used in our customer satisfaction survey . Higher is better.

Our latest customer satisfaction survey shows Spectrum ranking seventh out of 15 internet providers for overall satisfaction, falling behind heavy hitters like Verizon, Xfinity, AT&T, and Cox. New to our list is T-Mobile’s 5G internet, which takes the top spot in three out of five categories in our most recent survey.

Speed satisfaction is Spectrum’s best ranking, indicating that most customers are fine with the speeds they get for the money. However, Spectrum’s weakest link is in price satisfaction, as it just can’t compete with the other internet providers in our survey that don’t raise prices after 12 months.

To be fair, Spectrum’s price increase is $25 at the most, which is far better than the eye-opening hikes you can get from Astound Broadband, Mediacom, and Optimum.

How Spectrum compares to the competition

Spectrum’s direct competitors are AT&T, Verizon, and Frontier—all four can overlap in some service areas. Of the four, Spectrum is the middle ground provider with cable internet, while the other three serve faster fiber and slower DSL connections.

Generally, Spectrum’s prices are more expensive when you look at other comparable plans. For example, AT&T’s Internet 300 plan is $5 more per month than the base Spectrum Internet plan, but there’s no promotional pricing with AT&T, making it the better deal. Verizon has a similar plan at the same price, but again, there’s no price hike with Verizon. Plus, fiber has symmetrical speeds, which cable does not.

Customers who want gigabit speeds may now find Spectrum’s Internet Gig plan more appealing. The company recently dropped the price by $30 per month and discontinued the hefty $199.99 installation fee. The only drawback is that Internet Gig costs $114.99 a month by the third year of service, making it the most expensive long-term gigabit plan compared to the competition.

Is Spectrum Internet ® right for you?

Spectrum is a good cable internet alternative if you don’t have access to fiber internet. It’s an even better choice than DSL, which can reach only half the speed offered by the Spectrum Internet® plan.

Depending on your monthly download needs, your best bet is either the 300 Mbps or the 500 Mbps plan. The 1,000 Mbps plan is a good deal, too, although you may find cheaper options elsewhere. The average user probably doesn’t need gigabit speeds, but at least Spectrum’s Internet Gig service is now a more affordable option if you want all the speed you can get from Spectrum.

Interestingly, in addition to gigabit download speeds, Spectrum’s Internet Gig plan boasts an upload speed of up to 500 Mbps in limited areas. That’s ideal if you need to upload large files quickly or stream your gameplay to Twitch . We provide a guide— Mbps vs. Gbps: Do You Need Gigabit Internet? —to help you determine if Gigabit Internet is right for you.

FAQ about Spectrum

What are the best routers for spectrum internet.

Spectrum’s fastest plan reaches up to 1,000 Mbps, so you need a router with a 2.5 Gbps WAN port to get that speed. Otherwise, a router with a 1 Gbps WAN port tops out around 940 Mbps in speed. Does that extra 60 Mbps make a difference? That depends on your needs.

Get a Wi-Fi 6 router with lots of streams to support multiple wireless connections. Plus, Wi-Fi 6 is just more efficient and faster than the older Wi-Fi 5 standard. Also, get one with a 2.5 GbE WAN port if you opt for Spectrum’s gigabit plan.

  • Best Long-Range Routers

Are Spectrum’s modems really free?

Spectrum does not offer a free modem or gateway for you to keep forever and ever. It lends you a modem or gateway rent-free until you cancel your cable internet service. If you disappear into the night with the device, never to be seen again, expect to see an unreturned equipment fee of up to $61 on your final bill.

Part of Charter’s agreement with the FCC when it merged with Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks was to eliminate modem rental fees. If you’re a new Spectrum customer, you won’t see a modem rental charge on your monthly bill—just the $5 WiFi access fee. 8

Why do I still see a modem fee on my bill?

You may see a monthly Internet Modem Lease charge if you never migrated your Time Warner Cable or Bright House Networks plan to an official Spectrum plan. Even if you received a new modem within the last few years from Charter, you will continue to pay the Internet Modem Lease fee until you change plans. If you have a Spectrum router or wireless gateway, you will pay the monthly WiFi fee on top of the modem rental, totaling up to $15 per month ($180 annually).

For a bit of context, I’m a former Time Warner Cable customer. While I generally don’t look at my bill each month and just hand over my money, I was curious to see if I was still paying for a modem lease after seeing Spectrum’s “free modem” advertisement. Sure enough, the fee was still there, and a little research conjured up a few questions.

The legal text says that free modems are for new customers, but Charter’s deal with the FCC indicated that it would never impose modem leases—at least until 2023.

So I asked several Spectrum representatives why I still paid for a monthly modem lease. The bottom line is that I’m an old Time Warner Cable customer and not a new Spectrum customer. I still had a legacy plan and needed to migrate to an official plan to eliminate the monthly modem lease.

When I asked why I still paid this fee even after receiving a new Spectrum modem last year, the representative said it was because of my plan. Does that make sense? Absolutely not. “I don’t have a Time Warner modem. I have your Spectrum modem,” I argued to deaf ears.

In a nutshell, Spectrum never converted my internet plan, nor was I invited to do so. Instead, Spectrum quietly charged a monthly fee while advertising free modems. It’s shady business, to be honest, as is the following fee on our list.

Check your bill if you were a Time Warner Cable or Bright House Network customer to see if you still lease a modem. If so, contact Spectrum to migrate to a new plan.

Why does Spectrum charge a WiFi fee?

Spectrum charges a monthly WiFi Service fee whether you have Spectrum’s standalone router or its wireless gateway.

This fee is highly annoying because it’s unnecessary for customers who use the wireless gateway. A technician simply switches WiFi on or off. Nothing about this WiFi access affects your neighbors’ bandwidth, the service area, or Spectrum itself to require financial compensation each month.

In other words, gateway users must pay for WiFi because standard modem users lease Spectrum’s standalone routers. Moreover, you can’t choose between the two setups—you get whatever the Spectrum technician has on hand in the van.

To get around Spectrum’s monthly fee, install one of the best Wi-Fi routers . Just have Spectrum come out and turn off WiFi in the gateway or take back the standalone router. Both scenarios save you money over time.

Why do Spectrum’s plans say “up to” in terms of speed?

Spectrum displays “up to” next to its plan’s speed because the maximum isn’t guaranteed for several reasons.

Technically, Spectrum uses a hybrid fiber-coaxial infrastructure to deliver internet to homes and businesses. In other words, Spectrum’s core network uses fiber until it reaches a node where existing cable TV lines take over, generally at the front and back of a neighborhood. Cable TV lines provide speeds equal to fiber, so it’s cheaper for Spectrum and its customers to use the existing lines versus installing new fiber lines.

The days of peak hour slowdowns are mostly gone, but the equipment that delivers internet to your home can cause issues. Spectrum incorporates a splitter (RF directional amplifier) at each fiber node that feeds coaxial cabling to multiple streets. Amplifiers in the node and along the lines maintain the signal strength.

So, if a component somewhere along the line fails, you could see a slowdown or a complete disruption of service. Plus, buried cables might be damaged, or there may be an issue with your connection at the utility pole. Many factors can prevent you from getting your plan’s maximum speed.

Also, the local infrastructure’s total bandwidth can reduce your speed. Spectrum states that “speeds vary by location.” In fact, the Spectrum Internet plan advertises speeds up to 300 Mbps, but you may see a 100 Mbps or 200 Mbps maximum in certain areas.

Overall, the location-based speed variations and possible technical issues are why you see Spectrum use the “up to” disclaimer.

Why do wireless speeds vary?

Wireless speeds fluctuate no matter what you get from Spectrum’s connection. You may get 650 Mbps in one second and 600 Mbps in another during a single sitting. Plus, your speed drops the further you move away from a router or gateway, similar to how radio stations fade as you drive away from a tower. So, yes, unlike a wired connection, wireless speeds will vary because it’s the nature of WiFi.

Here’s a brief list of variables that cause your speeds to fluctuate:

  • Interference from other wireless networks and devices
  • The distance between you and the router
  • Obstructions like walls, furniture, floors, and so on
  • Home network traffic that can overload the router’s CPU and memory

Is Spectrum’s gigabit internet really 1 Gbps and not 940 Mbps?

Wired connections have hardware and software overhead that reduces your maximum bandwidth. Technically, a Gigabit Ethernet port has a theoretical speed of 1,000 Mbps, but after overhead, you get a sustained speed of around 940 Mbps. This is why you see some “gigabit” plans listed with speeds up to 940 Mbps—the modem, gateway, ONT, or router only use Gigabit Ethernet.

Spectrum now deploys modems and gateways with a 2.5 GbE internet port. The real-world speed after overhead can be around 2,125 Mbps, so Spectrum has plenty of bandwidth to achieve actual 1,000 Mbps speeds. But you’ll see the reduced speed if you don’t have a modem or gateway with the 2.5 GbE WAN port.

  • Best Internet and TV Bundles

Internet and TV bundles allow customers to enjoy optimized internet service paired with access to customized live television and streaming. There are also the added bonuses of easy billing and enhanced integration from the same provider. Further, many plans offer promotional discounts or cost savings when you combine multiple services. If you have a large household with multiple devices to connect simultaneously, 500 Mbps internet speed will give you fast browsing and smooth streaming ability. On the flip side, single or two-person households can get by with around 100 Mbps. For the household that wants to remain connected online and take advantage of premium TV service, bundling may be a good idea.

Many industry-leading providers understand customers want simplicity and transparency when it comes to their entertainment services. The good news is that you can find a provider with a bundling option that works best for your lifestyle and interests, and fits within your budget. Yet with so many options, sometimes it’s hard to know which provider and bundle to choose. We’ve created a list of the best internet and TV bundles to give you a kickstart on your search for a bundling plan that works for you.

AT&T comes with access to over 70,000 shows and movies on demand. Enjoy live sports, news coverage, and access to more than 200 channels of movies and TV shows. Choosing an AT&T TV plan may be worth the investment for those who want an all-access entertainment package.

Google Fiber

Offers internet plans up to 8 Gbps

Free professional installation

All TV plans include live TV, live sports, and on demand titles

Limited service areas in only 18 states

More expensive than other comparable providers

Purchase requires a separate transaction via selected plan’s homepage

If speed is the most important feature you’re interested in, there’s no better choice than Google Fiber when it comes to internet speeds. Google’s lowest-tiered plan starts at an impressive 1 Gbps of internet speed. Of course, that premium speed comes at an expensive $70 per month. That being said, you’ll enjoy no annual contracts, free professional installation, plus 1 TB of free cloud storage. For customers looking for even more speed, plans go up to 8 Gbps, the fastest speed of any providers on our list.

Google also offers four TV plans to bundle with your home internet. Plans focus on live TV access with the flexibility of streaming services. On the low end, Sling through Google Fiber provides you with 50+ channels and more than 50,000 movies on demand for only $40 per month. On the high end, DIRECTV through Google Fiber gives you 105+ channels and over 90,000 on demand movies for $84.99 per month. No matter which bundle you choose, all plans come with cloud DVR, live TV, and on demand access.

Unfortunately, Google Fiber is only available in 18 states. However, for those who can afford the high monthly rates for internet and TV services, Google is a top choice for reliable and trusted services.

The Bottom Line

Many providers understand customers want efficient internet speeds and premium access to the shows and movies they like. Through our research, we found that Verizon Fios offers a good balance of multiple plan options and affordable prices, without the worry of annual contracts or equipment rental fees. With internet plans starting at $49.99 per month, and Fios TV plans starting at $72.99 per month, customers can enjoy high-quality internet speeds and more than 100 TV channels without breaking the bank. Plus, Verizon will assist with paying any early termination fees when you choose to leave your current provider.

Things To Consider When Buying Internet and TV Bundles

Internet and TV services are typically an ongoing expense, so it’s important to keep within a budget you can manage. As with any product or service, verify any savings before making a decision. Although providers often advertise cost savings, consumers should examine monthly rates, hidden fees, and other discounts to see if there are indeed any savings or enough to warrant switching providers.

Internet Speed

There are two types of internet speeds: download and upload. With faster speeds, more users – and specifically, more devices – can use the internet with optimized use in the household.

“Speeds of 300 Mbps or higher should be sufficient for the majority of households,” says Jason Cohen, CEO of MyBundle.

If you have a larger home with multiple areas where you want to extend service, such as the backyard or garage, you may need specific equipment to ensure higher speeds. “A newer 6 or 6E router is suggested for the customer to truly get the most out of having a higher speed such as 2 Gbps,” says Kate Moore, Director of Marketing for Fiber Fast Homes. Google Fiber, for example, offers mesh extenders to expand Wi-Fi coverage. Google also uses Wi-Fi 6E devices for better connectivity, faster speeds, and less congestion.

Customers may also benefit from using the equipment provided by their provider rather than buying their own. “It’s very difficult for a provider to troubleshoot any issues when a customer has their own equipment that may end up not being compatible with the service,” says Moore. Providers are familiar with their equipment and understand the optimal speeds and properly functioning levels.

TV Channel Selection

Although streaming services may be the current preference by far, if you still enjoy watching local or regional stations and your favorite channels, some providers incorporate specific channel selections or bundled stations to choose from.

“There are many services that offer different combinations of traditional TV channels at various price points,” says Cohen. “These services can include local channels, national networks, traditional cable channels, regional sports networks, and more.” AT&T offers TV plans that include broadcast stations, such as AMC, Disney Channel, and ESPN. Verizon Fios also offers TV plans with up to 425+ channels depending on your interests.

Contract Terms

Most internet and TV providers realize customers don’t want one or two-year contracts. To give customers more control and flexibility, most providers forgo annual contracts for their service. That being said, it’s still important to read the terms and conditions before selecting your provider and services.

You may not be tied into any annual contracts, but some plans include other stipulations, such as rental equipment fees or required professional installation fees. AT&T, for example, may charge up to $99 for professional installation. Many hidden fees, such as installation, are not outright stated, so it’s the customer’s responsibility to investigate thoroughly before making a decision.

“Internet bills are infamous for being riddled with hidden fees and additional costs,” says Moore. She emphasizes that the promotional monthly cost for internet service is hardly the end of the story. “Late payment fees, early termination fees, equipment fees, and even taxes are costs a customer needs to understand fully,” she adds. If you’re ever unsure about the terms of your contract, ask your provider so there’s no confusion.

How We Chose the Best Internet and TV Bundles

At U.S. News 360 Reviews, our contributor consulted experts to gather knowledge and insight to curate this list of Best Internet and TV Bundles. Our contributors spoke with Jason Cohen, CEO of MyBundle, and Kate Moore, Director of Marketing for Fiber Fast Homes. We then narrowed the selection down through extensive research, focusing on price, internet speeds, TV and streaming options, and contract terms, as well as service areas. Overall, we found that customers have a wide range of internet and TV bundling options offered by industry-leading providers. Many plans include high-speed internet, generous data allowances, and some level of customization of TV channels and streaming services at affordable prices.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

Our contributors and editors at U.S. News 360 Reviews have years of experience testing and researching in-home products, as well as conducting subject matter expert interviews. Zaida enjoys providing consumers with industry knowledge and know-how that help them make informed decisions to enhance their health and lifestyles.

Depending on the internet and TV bundle you choose, you may see cost savings compared to other similar plans. “The one benefit of bundling some providers tout is cost savings, but even that has to be examined carefully to see if indeed there are savings,” says Kate Moore. It’s best to compare prices based on the internet service and speed you’re looking for as well as any TV options (such as cable or streaming) you need to ensure it is indeed cheaper.

A fast internet speed can be considered anything over 500 Mbps. Any speed of half a gig or higher can be used for seamless online work, streaming, or even the most internet-intensive gaming.

Many people, however, will not need the highest speeds. However, that being said, a good rule of thumb is to have internet download speeds of at least 100 Mbps. This speed can allow internet browsing, file downloads, and some online gaming and/or streaming. The best internet speed for you is largely dependent upon the number of users in your household, how many devices need to access the internet at any given time, and your general internet usage.

You can easily test your internet speed online.

You can save money on internet and TV services by bundling all your service needs under one provider. Many providers will offer some kind of deal for bundles including internet, television, mobile phone, and even home security.

In addition, eligible customers who meet the financial requirements may benefit from government assistance through programs like the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) or Lifeline, which help qualifying households access basic internet and phone services.

Yes, you can often add mobile phone service to an internet or TV plan. For example, Verizon and Spectrum both offer the ability to fully customize your package, adding what you want and opting out of what you don’t.

  • Low-Cost Internet: What Options Are Available for Affordable Internet Service?

Now that the ACP is potentially ending soon, what other programs are available for free or low-cost internet?

  • Tyler Cooper

Woman stares at her laptop with various bills in front of her.

  • Cheap internet is available with several assistance programs from major internet service providers like AT&T and Xfinity.
  • Government assistance programs are also available, but the largest one (the ACP) is potentially ending soon.
  • Public Wi-Fi networks and hot spots are free, but you should use a VPN service to protect your online privacy.

Having access to reliable internet service is more important than ever. Fortunately, you can take advantage of multiple programs that offer low-income or affordable internet service. Our guide covers low-cost and free internet options for households with low or fixed income and how to apply to government and nongovernmental programs for affordable broadband. Let’s take a closer look.

Government Internet Assistance Programs

Low-cost internet service provider (isp) programs, types of low-cost internet, explained.

There are four main internet connection types that differ in speeds and pricing:

  • DSL : Slow, reliable, and often the most affordable.
  • Satellite : Wide availability, slow, unreliable, and higher pricing.
  • Cable : A balance of speed and value.
  • Fiber : Limited availability, fast speeds, and higher pricing.

The best type of connection is generally fiber, but it depends on the deals available in your area and your budget for internet service. Free internet options are also available in nearly every location — if you know where to look.

Before evaluating the best free options, it’s important to note you will most likely need to make concessions to get your internet for free.

You can generally expect slower speeds, less reliable connections, and greater limitations on data usage. If you don’t plan to use much data and you’re content with slower speeds, then free or low-cost internet can save you a lot of money.

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)

The Affordable Connectivity Program has been a crucial lifeline to millions of Americans for years, offering a $30 per month discount on internet services. However, the FCC announced it would stop taking new applications on Feb. 8, 2024, due to funding issues. This program has helped over 20 million households connect to the digital world for work, school, and more.

As the ACP’s funds started to dwindle, it became clear that Congress would need to step in to secure additional funding. A proposed solution, the Affordable Connectivity Program Extension Act, seeks to inject $7 billion into the program, receiving broad support from over 400 organizations. This move underscores the program’s critical role in supporting both the people who need internet access and the larger goal of expanding America’s digital infrastructure.

The program’s success has been clear, with millions benefiting from the subsidies to keep their broadband affordable. Yet, as spring 2024 approaches, the threat of running out of funds looms large, potentially disconnecting millions and affecting internet service providers that have come to rely on the increased customer base and steady revenue the ACP provides.

Lifeline Program

Lifeline is a government subsidy program that connects low-income families with discounts from many major providers. To qualify for assistance through Lifeline, you must have an income at or below 135 percent of the federal poverty level or participate in one of the following programs:

  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Federal public housing assistance (Section 8)

Tribal communities also have special considerations that afford eligibility for Lifeline:

  • Any of the federal assistance programs listed above
  • Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
  • Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
  • Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
  • Head Start (provided income eligibility criteria are met)

To determine whether you’re eligible for assistance through Lifeline, use the official eligibility screener .

What Are the Best Internet Options for Low-Income Families?

There are a surprising number of plans from major providers that offer internet for low-income families without requiring you to apply for a specific program.

Keep in mind that these plans may not be available in your area. Information on provider availability can be accessed easily using the search tool at the top of this page.

Xfinity offers inexpensive plans, but it stands out with its bundled services. If you’re looking to purchase high-speed internet with excellent TV service, Xfinity may be your best option.

View Xfinity Internet deals .

Spectrum ’s cheapest plan is more expensive than what you’ll find with Xfinity, but a key advantage it offers is plans without data caps or contracts. When your income is limited, the ability to cancel service at will may justify the slightly more expensive monthly cost.

Spectrum’s most affordable plan is fast enough to cover HD streaming, making it an excellent option for people who are willing to shell out a little extra each month for a speedy, contract-free connection.

View Spectrum internet deals .

Verizon Fios

Verizon Fios provides some of the fastest speeds on the market with no contracts and unlimited data on its plans.

Fios isn’t the cheapest option, but the combination of fast speeds, no contracts, and no data caps makes Verizon worth a look.

View Verizon Fios internet deals .

CenturyLink

CenturyLink is one of the most accessible providers in the U.S. for service in rural areas. The DSL speeds generally don’t compete with cable and fiber providers. CenturyLink’s own fiber service is only marginally faster than DSL, but it’s a reliable (and sometimes the only) option for people who live far from a city.

DSL service is available to the majority of the U.S. due to preexisting infrastructure, but HughesNet satellite service has an even wider range. HughesNet remains one of the top satellite providers despite slightly slower speeds.

Low-Income Assistance Plans From Major Internet Providers

The programs below are designed to provide accessible pricing for people on fixed incomes. If you can’t find information for your specific provider, a phone call to customer support will often get you information about the company’s assistance program.

AT&T Access

The AT&T Access program offers basic internet service for low-income families. With speeds up to 100 Mbps for $30 per month, it’s a viable way to stay connected for basic web browsing.

Access is available for families approved for the ACP. If your household doesn’t qualify, AT&T internet deals are generally the lowest consumer-grade option for home internet. Keep in mind that DSL speeds from AT&T are usually slower than cable for streaming video.

To determine if you’re eligible, visit the Access page and fill out an application.

Internet Essentials From Comcast

The Internet Essentials program from Comcast allows qualifying customers to buy a plan for just $9.95 per month. The service also includes free in-home Wi-Fi and it’s available without a credit check.

One unique perk is the ability for customers to purchase a subsidized laptop or desktop computer for $149.99, which is less expensive than what you’d find in a store or online. Depending on the computer you choose, it may include Microsoft Office and Google Docs plus Google Play Store.

To be eligible for the Internet Essentials program, you must have at least one child eligible for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and meet many other criteria.

Spectrum Internet Assist

Spectrum Internet Assist functions similarly to the Comcast program and requires families to have a child eligible for the NSLP. The service offers a free modem and a 30 Mbps connection. Wi-Fi costs $5 extra per month with this plan.

To apply for Spectrum Internet Assist, visit the Spectrum Assist website .

Cox Connect2Compete

Cox Low-Cost Internet is integrated with the Connect2Compete program, which is aimed at helping K-12 students get access to affordable internet. The program costs $9.95 per month, and it’s available to families with a child in kindergarten or first grade to 12th grade.

To be eligible for Cox Low-Cost Internet, your family must participate in a government assistance program like SNAP, NSLP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), or public housing.

Visit the Cox Low-Cost Internet website to apply for assistance.

Mediacom Connect2Compete

Mediacom is another major ISP that participates in the Connect2Compete program. It offers high-speed internet service for $9.95 per month for speeds up to 25 Mbps or $30 per month for speeds up to 100 Mbps to families with at least one child in a free or reduced-cost lunch program.

Frequently Asked Questions About Low-Cost Internet

Is there any government program that provides free internet? While the government doesn’t directly offer free internet, programs like Lifeline can significantly reduce internet bills, potentially to zero dollars, for qualifying participants of government assistance programs, such as Medicaid and SNAP. Eligibility extends to those involved in federal assistance programs.

Can I receive internet assistance if I’m on SNAP? Yes, SNAP participants are eligible for internet assistance through the Lifeline program. Additionally, many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offer their own low-income assistance programs that SNAP participants can benefit from.

Does the government cover internet costs for eligible households? Through the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), eligible households receive a monthly discount on their internet bill, which can cover part or all of the cost. The standard benefit is up to $30 and up to $75 for households on tribal lands.

What is the duration of the ACP program? The ACP is intended to be a permanent program, succeeding the temporary Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB). Its continuation is dependent on ongoing congressional funding, with no predefined termination date.

How can I access internet assistance if I live on tribal lands? For residents on tribal lands, the Tribal Broadband Connectivity Program (TBCP) offers funding for broadband services, though it targets entities, like tribal organizations, rather than individuals. For direct household assistance, the ACP provides significant benefits, with enhanced support for those living on tribal lands.

How Can Seniors Use the Internet on Their Phones?

At least 75 percent of adults ages 65 and over use the internet. 1 According to the Pew Research Center, that rate increased from 43 percent over the past decade, and increasing rates of social media use and mobile device ownership indicate that even more seniors will use the internet in the coming years. 2 Whether you want to virtually connect with family and friends, start a hobby, or watch your favorite movie, the internet is a stellar resource for older adults.

If you feel flustered about choosing the best internet service for your needs and budget, we have you covered. Our tech team has spent hundreds of hours researching and testing the best internet plans for seniors and narrowed the search to our top picks. We’ve also included takeaways from our experience with the providers we use in our own homes. After all, we all have our own internet packages!

How We Chose the Best Internet for Seniors

Using my Xfinity internet

Using my Xfinity internet

There are a lot of solid internet providers out there! We selected 10 of the top providers and compared costs, customer satisfaction, internet speed, and plan options. We tested the company’s internet plans for ourselves to understand the ins and outs of the service. Then, we narrowed our list to the best all-around choices. Read on to learn about the five providers that offer the best internet service for seniors.

Best Internet Services for Seniors in 2024

What we like most.

Love a good bundle? Our research team found that Xfinity by Comcast offers the best bundling options that give seniors access to high-speed internet, hundreds of HDTV channels, and a home phone line. The bundles offer significant discounts with longer-term contracts compared with purchasing each service separately. Certain bundles come with perks such as faster internet, premium channels, and free on-demand movies and shows. With Xfinity bundles, you can enjoy endless entertainment right at your fingertips.

As an Xfinity customer myself, I can attest to Xfinity’s fast speeds and robust bundles. I work from home, and I’ve rarely experienced issues with speed or lagging. Whether I’m taking a Zoom call, hosting a movie night on Netflix, or scrolling on social media, my connection is reliable. Getting set up with Xfinity was also a breeze. I called and spoke to a representative to ensure I chose the best plan for my needs. I then walked into my local Xfinity store, picked up my equipment, and had it all set up the same day — no appointment or lengthy installation required. I wish Xfinity’s contract-free plans were the same price as its plans with long-term contracts, but other than that I’m a happy customer!

For an in-depth look at Xfinity’s offerings, including budget-friendly bundles, read our review of Xfinity’s internet plans or our Xfinity cable TV review .

Pros About Xfinity

  • Variety of internet and entertainment bundles available
  • Household internet speeds up to 1,200 Mbps
  • Perks and discounts with bundles
  • Contract-free options

Cons About Xfinity

  • The best rates require long-term contracts
  • Promotional prices increase after 12 months
  • There’s no senior-specific discount

The company doesn’t provide senior-specific discounts, but internet rates start around $19.99 per month with a one-year contract. Xfinity offers prepaid contract-free bundling and internet options, so you won’t have to commit long-term if you don’t want to. You’ll receive the best rates with a long-term contract, so we recommend it if you plan to stay put for at least a year. You also save up to $20 per month on select Xfinity internet plans for up to 24 months if you sign up for Xfinity Mobile . Xfinity also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for even greater peace of mind.

FYI: If you don’t have a cell phone, you can still bundle with Xfinity. The company often runs deals for Xfinity cable TV and internet packages.

Customer Satisfaction

Internet providers like Xfinity — and its parent company, Comcast — need to balance dependability with quality customer service to provide a great all-around experience. We’ve looked at a few ratings to evaluate Xfinity’s customer satisfaction.

  • Standard & Poor’s (S&P): A- (stable credit)
  • Better Business Bureau (BBB): A+ (high trustworthiness and performance)
  • BroadbandNow.com: 3.45 out of 5

Both S&P and BBB give Xfinity and Comcast relatively high ratings, indicating that they have stable financial credibility and are generally high-performing and trustworthy businesses. It’s important to note, however, that Xfinity has not taken the time to become BBB accredited, and consumer BBB ratings of Xfinity are just 2.09 out of 5 based on more than 1,600 reviews. Xfinity performed better among BroadbandNow.com readers, who gave the provider a collective rating of 3.45 out of 5 based on more than 6,000 reviews.

Internet Speeds

Xfinity speeds can vary substantially by location and plan type, but the provider offers some of the fastest internet speeds in the country. The top nationwide speeds based on customer speed tests are around 458.55 Mbps. In most areas, Xfinity offers advertised download speeds ranging from 75 to 1,200 Mbps.

AT&T Communications has changed the way people live, work, and play for more than 140 years. The company provides mobile and broadband services to more than 100 million U.S. consumers. AT&T earned our accolades for the best variety of internet plans for seniors thanks to its stellar plan options, reliability, pricing, and benefits. The company’s internet services are top-notch, delivering a high-speed, secure internet connection with 99 percent reliability.

One of our tech experts tested AT&T internet and found that to be true. She lives in a four-person household with multiple people who work from home and spend a lot of time online. During her time using AT&T, she found that her connection was always reliable and offered consistent download speeds throughout the day. She was also a big fan of AT&T’s lack of term contracts.

Every AT&T internet plan also includes the AT&T Internet Security Suite powered by McAfee, a robust security software for protecting your computer from dangerous viruses, hackers, and spyware. Older adults are often victims of scamming , so we appreciate the added layer of protection. You can learn more from our 2024 AT&T internet review .

Pros About AT&T

  • No annual contracts
  • Free self-installation kit
  • AT&T Smart Home Manager app for your Wi-Fi network and connected devices
  • Over 30,000 Wi-Fi hotspots nationwide
  • Discount for autopay and paperless billing
  • Fixed wireless option for rural areas

Cons About AT&T

  • Fiber internet only available in 21 states
  • Installation and equipment fees

AT&T internet plans start at $55 per month, and tech-savvy customers can save $50 or more on professional installation by using the company’s free self-installation kit.

AT&T offers a wide range of services in addition to its internet plans. Many of its customer satisfaction ratings extend beyond its internet service, but examining those ratings can still help you understand the bigger picture of AT&T’s business practices and customer service.

  • S&P: BBB (adequate credit)
  • BBB: A+ (high trustworthiness and performance)
  • BroadbandNow.com: 3.39 out of 5

AT&T has a stable financial outlook, but it has taken on higher levels of debt than many of its competitors, which has resulted in a relatively low financial rating from S&P. Nonetheless, AT&T receives excellent ratings from the BBB. Consumer reviews are mixed, however. More than 4,000 BBB reviewers give AT&T a rating of just 1.09 out of 5, compared to an average rating of 3.39 out of 5 based on more than 3,000 reviews from BroadbandNow.com readers.

AT&T advertises speeds up to 5 Gbps, but, like most providers, it rarely delivers those speeds. Like any internet provider, AT&T’s speeds vary based on the location and plan type. Three of AT&T’s most popular internet plans advertise speeds of 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps, and 1 Gbps, while the top 10 percent of nationwide speed tests record speeds around 402.45 Mbps.

We tested out AT&T’s 50 Mbps plan and found that speeds were very consistent. We typically experienced download speeds of around 45 Mbps, which is just under our plan’s advertised speeds.

Spectrum ® , a subsidiary of Charter Communications, earned our choice for the best low-cost internet for seniors thanks to its Spectrum Internet Assist plan . To qualify for Spectrum Internet Assist, one or more members of your household must receive assistance under Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for applicants 65 or older, the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), or the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

Pros About Spectrum Internet Ⓡ

  • No data caps or contracts on most plans
  • Free internet modem
  • High-speed internet up to 1 Gbps
  • Optional in-home WiFi device for $5 per month
  • Participation in the federal Affordable Connectivity Program
  • 99.9 percent network reliability
  • Free installation with some plans

Cons About Spectrum Internet Ⓡ

  • Recipients of Social Security Disability (SSD), SSD Insurance, and Social Security Retirement and Survivor Benefits do not meet eligibility requirements for the Internet Assist plan
  • Equipment, activation, and installation fees may apply
  • Pricing may change after a year

Spectrum’s internet plan pricing is subject to change after the first year of service and may also vary based on your location. Spectrum offers three standard plans with the following introductory rates:

  • Spectrum Internet: $49.99 per month (first year)
  • Spectrum Ultra: $69.99 per month (first year)
  • Spectrum Gig: $89.99 per month (first year)

If you want to spend much less on your internet, Spectrum’s Internet Assist program is quite robust, offering high-speed internet, a free internet modem, and the option to add Wi-Fi for only $5 more per month. It’s simple to apply online, or you can print the application and mail it in. You can also save up to $30 per month on internet service if you qualify through the Affordable Connectivity Program.

If you owe any debt to Charter Communications (up to one year before your application) or have been a customer of Charter Communications within the past 30 days, you will not qualify for the Spectrum Internet Assist program. Learn more about Spectrum’s low-cost and traditional internet plans in our Spectrum Internet review . Spectrum Internet review.

Spectrum has established itself as a top provider of affordable internet, and it boasts a stable financial outlook and high performance metrics.

  • S&P: BBB- (adequate credit)
  • BroadbandNow.com: 3.38 out of 5

From our team’s own experience, Spectrum’s customer service agents have always been reliable, kind, and helpful. Customer service agents are quick to respond. One of our favorite features is the company’s online chat feature. It offers an easy way to get questions answered quickly.

Chatting with Spectrum Support

Chatting with Spectrum Support

Spectrum advertises plans with speeds of 300 Mbps, 500 Mbps, and 1 Gbps. According to Spectrum’s website, customers have recorded average download speeds of 234.80 Mbps in 2023. The top 10th percentile of speed tests averages around 336.16 Mbps.

When our team tested Spectrum, we found that our download speeds were often slower during peak internet traffic times, though they were still very fast. While using the 500 Mbps package, we consistently experienced download speeds just under 250 Mbps. While this is only half of the plan’s advertised speed, it was still plenty of speed for gaming, working from home, and streaming shows. Spectrum offers contract-free plans for decent prices, though, and you may have a better experience in your area.

CenturyLink takes customer satisfaction seriously, and it wants you to love your internet service! With live chat available from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT daily, it’s easy to connect with an online specialist, but you may have to wait a while for an available agent. If you’re wondering how CenturyLink stands up against the competition, check out our CenturyLink internet for seniors review .

FYI: Need a technician for in-home setup or service? CenturyLink has a feature that allows you to manage and track your service appointments. You’ll even be able to see the approximate location of your technician.

Pros About CenturyLink

  • Available in most states
  • Support available seven days a week
  • No data overage fees
  • Option to bundle internet and home phone for additional savings
  • Free self-installation option for some plans
  • CenturyLink Security by McAfee included

Cons About CenturyLink

  • Charges for service installation and one-time shipping and handling fee for modem/router
  • Mandatory purchase or lease of a CenturyLink modem
  • Technician installation fee

CenturyLink offers straightforward pricing, with plans starting at $50 per month for speeds up to 100 Mbps. For $75 per month, you can upgrade to the 940 Mbps Fiber Internet plan. We love that there are no promotional rates that expire after a few months. CenturyLink does, however, require you to lease or purchase a modem from the company. We’ve found that CenturyLink offers some of the best prices for fiber plans, but they may not be available in your city.

CenturyLink has decent ratings for overall customer satisfaction.

  • S&P: BB (adequate credit)
  • BBB: NR (no rating)
  • BroadbandNow.com: 3.13 out of 5

The BBB doesn’t have an official rating for CenturyLink, but that isn’t necessarily a bad sign. More than 700 reviewers on BBB give CenturyLink a rating of 1.05 out of 5, while over 4,300 reviewers on BroadbandNow.com give it an average rating of 3.13 out of 5. Its best ratings are related to customer service and reliability.

CenturyLink speeds range from 100 Mbps to 940 Mbps, although most locations only have access to two plan speeds. Across all plans, CenturyLink customers record top speeds of around 186.77 Mbps, but individual speeds will vary.

  • Available in only 18 states

Cox offers several internet plans, ranging in price from $49.99 per month for the entry-level plan, called Go Fast, to the $149.99-per-month 2 GB Go Beyond Fast plan. Cox internet plans don’t require term contracts, so you aren’t locked into anything long-term.

Cox performs better than many other major ISPs, particularly related to customer service and internet speeds.

  • BroadbandNow.com: 3.66 out of 5

Unlike many other providers, Cox is a BBB-accredited business, which means it has voluntarily demonstrated its commitment to customer service and ethical business practices. Nonetheless, roughly 850 customer reviews on BBB report an average rating of just 1.12 out of 5. On the other hand, over 1,800 BroadbandNow.com reviewers give Cox Communications an average rating of 3.66 out of 5.

Which Is the Best Type of Internet Plan for Seniors?

Older adults can choose from a variety of affordable internet plans. From basic plans with lower speeds to full internet, TV, and home phone bundles, you’re sure to find an option that fits your needs and budget. It’s common for senior centers and public libraries to offer no-cost access to computers and the internet. Our technology for seniors guide provides in-depth information on making the most of your connection to the world. You can also head to our senior discounts and savings guide to browse over 100 senior discounts.

As for senior internet plans, the cost varies greatly by provider, your lifestyle and needs, and even your location. We recommend calling local providers to find out if they offer free internet for seniors in your area. If the provider doesn’t offer free internet or a senior discount, it may have other deals and discounts you’re eligible for. You can also negotiate with the provider to get the best rates possible.

10 Questions to Consider When Searching for the Best Internet Service for Seniors

Ready to find an internet service plan that fits your lifestyle and budget? Research plays a key role! Sure, those television commercials and internet service advertisements you receive in the mail seem like great options, but they don’t always provide the full picture of pricing and fees. As you research internet plans for seniors, consider these 10 important questions.

  • Which carriers offer service in your area? The internet providers you have access to depend on where you live. An easy way to find out your service options is to ask your neighbors, family, and friends what internet providers they use.
  • Are there any affordable senior internet plans? Ask your prospective provider if they offer any discounts on internet plans for seniors. One budget-friendly perk of being a senior is special internet plans for adults ages 55 and over.
  • Are there opportunities to save? Ask about additional savings! From paperless billing and autopay to bundling your internet and cell phone service, you may discover ways to trim down your monthly bill.
  • What will your all-in monthly statement be? Is that $9.95-per-month internet plan truly affordable, or are there hidden fees? Avoid unpleasant surprises by asking what the grand monthly total will be. The total they quote you should include internet service, taxes, rental fees, and any other costs you’ll see on your monthly bill.
  • Do you have to purchase or rent equipment? Some internet providers, such as Spectrum, provide a free internet modem and give you the option to use your own router. Other carriers may require you to buy or rent their equipment, which is an additional cost.
  • Is a contract required? Many companies are doing away with contracts, since they understand their customers want the freedom to change plans. Before signing up with a new internet service provider, ask if the plan is based on a contract and how long you are locked into it.
  • Are security options included? Each year, millions of older Americans fall victim to some type of fraud or scam. 5 A major part of identity theft protection is a secure internet connection. Ask your carrier if your plan includes an internet security program to ensure safe web browsing. You can also visit our guide to scams that target seniors to learn how you can avoid falling victim to a cybercrime.
  • What customer and tech-support services are offered? It’s important to know your internet provider has your back, even on a Friday night when your internet goes kaput. Ask if 24/7 support is available.
  • What does the fine print say? Companies may offer promotional internet plans for seniors. Keep in mind that these plans are for a limited time. At the end of the promo period, they may increase your prices automatically. When you sign up for a new plan, ask if there is promotional pricing, and, if there is, what the new monthly internet cost will be after your contract expires.
  • Is there an early cancellation fee? Life happens! If you’re aging in place and decide to relocate to a retirement community , for example, you may need to cancel your current internet plan. Some internet carriers offer no-contract plans, while others charge an early termination fee.

You can maximize your savings by choosing internet service from a company that offers other discounts for eligible seniors, such as waived installation fees and no required deposits. Where to Find Internet Service for Seniors

Most communities have several internet providers to choose from, which means seniors often have no issues finding an internet plan that is ideal for their needs and suits their budget.

Talk with trusted family members or friends about their experiences with internet service providers. It’s also a good idea to ask how reliable their internet connection is, since no one wants to sign up for spotty internet!

If you’ve recently moved to a new residence, you may now live in the service area of a preferred internet provider that offers the best internet for seniors. For older adults living in a senior apartment or retirement facility, the residence manager can guide you through prospective internet providers. Your options may be limited if your senior living community has a specific contracted provider.

An internet-capable phone is perfect for active older adults who need access to emails on the go, want to video chat with family and friends, or enjoy surfing the web throughout the day.

Not all cell phones are “smart,” of course, so as you shop for the best senior-friendly cell phone for your needs, ask the provider if the phone has internet access. Note that most flip phones may have limited internet capabilities. This means they’ll be able to browse some sites, but will be unable to stream video and music, video chat, and use social media. Always ask if you’re unsure!

AT&T outage? Here’s what we know and when service could be back up

WASHINGTON - AT&T cell phone users across the U.S. reported outages on Thursday morning. Tens of thousands of customers reported the disruptions to their home phone, internet and mobile phone services, according to Downdetector. The outages began around 3:30 a.m. ET, according to a graph shown on the website that tracks outages.

Downdetector also showed a spike in reported T-Mobile outages around 4:00 a.m. According to Fox Business, a Verizon spokesperson told them customers are only experiencing issues when trying to contact users who have AT&T, which operates FirstNet.

AT&T, Cricket Wireless, Verizon, T-Mobile outages Thursday

A number of Americans are dealing with cellular outages on AT&T, Cricket Wireless, Verizon, T-Mobile and other service providers, according to data from Downdetector.

AT&T released the following statement:

"Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning.  We are working urgently to restore service to them.  We encourage the use of Wi-Fi calling until service is restored."

AT&T national outage? Here’s what we know and when service could be back up

FOX 5 is following breaking news as we learn more about a possible AT&T nationwide outage.

Some employees at FOX 5 in Bethesda have also reported not being able to use their devices for calls, texts or to connect to Wi-Fi. The app is also reportedly having issues.

Here’s what’s known about the cellular outages reported.

AT&T phone outage

DownDetector.com, an outage tracking site, showed thousands of outages reported starting around 4 a.m. ET, mostly impacting mobile phone users.

Outages were reported in many major U.S. cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, and Philadelphia.

AT&T appeared to have the most reported outages, followed by Cricket, Verizon, T-Mobile, Boost Mobile and others, according to DownDetector.

iPhone ‘SOS’ only – what does it mean?

During the outage, iPhone users reported seeing SOS or "SOS only" in the status bar.

This means the device isn't connected to a network, but the phone users can still make emergency calls.

What to do if your iPhone or Android is stuck on SOS mode and you can’t call 911

Law enforecement and officials nationwide are sharing information on how to call in for emergency services if 911 is not working for you.

Ready Fairfax says the Fairfax County 911 center is still operational. They suggest calling from a landline or asking a friend or family member to call 9-1-1 on your behalf.

Can a solar flare be to blame for the AT&T nationwide outage?

With AT&T having been victim to a solar flare back in 1972 – can the same issue happen again?

According to our sister-station in Orlando, the important distinction here is that AT&T was made up of landlines. The solar flare back in the 70s created a voltage on the physical lines.

FOX 35 Meteorologist Brooks Garner said the issue Thursday morning seems to stem from a SIM card database registry issue, Brooks said.

"Now, it is possible the X_class flare had impacts to the voltage on some electronics, but since this is so specific to AT&T and not other carriers, it's likely not space weather related," said Brooks.

EAU CLAIRE COUNTY, Wisc.  — Spectrum, the #1 rural internet provider in the nation * , today announced the launch of Spectrum Internet, Mobile, TV and Voice services to 750 homes and small businesses throughout Eau Claire County, Wisconsin.

Spectrum’s newly constructed fiber-optic network buildout includes parts of the following towns: Bridge Creek, Clear Creek, Fall Creek, Lincoln, Ludington, Otter Creek and Washington. This new service is part of the company’s approximately $5 billion RDOF-related investment in unserved rural communities, partly offset by $1.2 billion in the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) RDOF auction.

Local residents and business owners should visit spectrumruralexpansion.com to learn more about when their home or business may be able to receive Spectrum services.

The company’s RDOF expansion will provide broadband access to 1.3 million customer locations across 24 states in the coming years. Spectrum has also won more than $700 million in state broadband expansion subsidies, which, combined with Spectrum investments, will connect another 300,000 homes and small businesses.

“Spectrum is bringing gigabit broadband to unserved communities in Wisconsin and across America through RDOF,” said Matt Brown, Spectrum’s Vice President of Construction. “Our investment is making it possible to deliver the high-value broadband, mobile, TV and voice services now available in Eau Claire County. Jesse James. “I’m thankful that we have a partner like Spectrum to bring high-speed connectivity to families that didn’t have access before and help close the digital divide for good.”

Spectrum Internet exceeded advertised download and upload speeds for all tiers measured — even during peak weeknight usage between 7 and 11 p.m. — according to the FCC’s most recent “ Measuring Broadband America Fixed Broadband Report ” issued in January 2023.

“Many Rural communities often fall behind when it comes to internet availability,” said state Rep. Karen Hurd, “and communities in my district have experienced this first-hand. Spectrum’s partnership through RDOF will help close the digital divide for businesses, schools, and residents.”

Couldn’t get AT&T cell phone service today? Here’s why

Customer reports of at&t wireless outages peaked at more than 73,000 around 8:15 a.m. texas cities were particularly hard hit..

The cellular outage hit all carriers, including Dallas-based AT&T.

By Lana Ferguson , Maria Halkias and Irving Mejia-Hilario

7:09 AM on Feb 22, 2024 CST — Updated at 8:50 AM on Feb 22, 2024 CST

Sitting outside AT&T’s Dallas headquarters in the company’s signature Discovery District, small business owner Roxie Reese had a moment to reflect on the disruptive morning she and thousands of other wireless customers nationwide awoke to Thursday.

Reese had a morning appointment and grabbed her cell phone in a rush.

“I didn’t realize until after I left my house that I had no service,” said Reese, owner and founder of DFW Lash University. “I made it to my destination but I didn’t know where I was going. So it made me run behind. It’s a reminder that phones are a resource I take for granted because when it’s not available, it definitely makes life harder.”

Early Thursday, a major outage centered around AT&T’s mobile service meant many Americans were unable to place calls, send texts or access the internet. By 8:15 a.m. Dallas time, over 73,000 AT&T customers in major cities like Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Atlanta and Chicago reported cellular outages to Downdetector.com , a website that tracks service problems by users. The problem cascaded to other cellular carriers whose customers were trying to reach AT&T users.

The outage appeared to be subsiding by noontime, with about 6,600 complaints of outages on the AT&T network.

AT&T acknowledged it had a widespread outage but did not provide a reason for the system failure.

“Some of our customers are experiencing wireless service interruptions this morning,” AT&T said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News . “Our network teams took immediate action and so far three-quarters of our network has been restored. We are working as quickly as possible to restore service to remaining customers.”

At the White House, national security spokesman John Kirby downplayed the possibility of a cyberattack. He said the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and FCC are working with AT&T to determine the cause.

”Right now, we’re being told that AT&T has no reason to think that this was a cybersecurity incident,” he told reporters at midday. “But … we won’t know until an investigation has been completed. It’s good that the vast majority of customers have had their service restored. Obviously, we’ve got to do spade work to figure out what happened.”

Bloomberg reported the federal government is investigating whether the outage was caused by a cyberattack, citing two U.S. officials familiar with the situation but who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive information.

Kristen Hanich, director of research at Addison-based research firm Parks Associates, said a number of potential issues could have been the cause.

“It could be anything from authentication issues to hardware failure or cloud configuration errors or cyber or other reasons,” she said. “Time will tell, and we are closely monitoring the story.”

Texas cities appeared to be particularly hard hit.

AT&T is the dominant wireless carrier in Texas, with 34% of the market, according to Parks Associates. Nationally, AT&T ranks third behind Verizon and T-Mobile with a 22% market share. It has about 87 million wireless subscribers.

Besides the consumer impact, AT&T’s emergency response network, FirstNet, also suffered disruptions. Kirby said it’s his understanding FirstNet has been “fully restored” nationwide.

CNN reported earlier that AT&T encountered sporadic outages over the past few days, including a temporary 911 outage in some parts of the southeastern United States. Several other local governments around the country said AT&T’s outage was disrupting its services.

San Francisco’s Department of Emergency Management said in a statement on X Thursday morning that its 911 center remained operational, but many AT&T customers were unable to reach the emergency line because of the outages. It suggested people call from a landline or find someone with a rival’s service to dial 911.

“We are aware of an issue impacting AT&T wireless customers from making and receiving any phone calls (including to 911),” the department said in its post. “We are actively engaged and monitoring this.”

Related: What to know about AT&T’s cellular network outage

It didn’t appear that the outages were majorly impacting many North Texas police departments early Thursday.

“The Dallas Police Department is aware of the reported outage and is monitoring the situation,” the department said in a statement. “The department has not been impacted by the reported outage.”

The department’s 911 communications and other systems were functional, the statement said.

Fort Worth police said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that they’re aware of the outages but it hasn’t impacted their 911 call center.

We are aware that there is a cellular outage affecting AT&T and some other mobile customers. However, this outage has not affected the 911 Call Center. We are still available for your emergency needs. — Fort Worth Police (@fortworthpd) February 22, 2024

“We are still available for your emergency needs,” the post said.

Frisco police also posted about the outages but said even if a cell phone is showing SOS, it should still be able to call 911

A nationwide service outage affecting multiple cell phone providers appears to be slowly resolving. Those with phones still showing SOS should be able to reach 9-1-1 if needed. Matt Zavadsky, a spokesperson with MedStar, which provides emergency medical services to Fort Worth and surrounding areas, said the organization’s FirstNet system “became intermittent/non-functional” about 2:30 a.m. This caused MedStar to lose the ability to see its units on its computer system and it couldn’t use automated navigation to calls.

During that time, MedStar used radio dispatching and map books in the ambulances instead.

Other major entities in North Texas and across the state reported normal operations Thursday morning. ERCOT spokeswoman Trudi Webster said the state’s electric grid was operating normally.

DFW International Airport and Dallas Love Field also saw no impact. Autonomous trucking companies Aurora and Kodiak and public hospital system, Parkland Health, reported no disruptions as well.

Some retailers seemingly anticipated such a problem.

H-E-B spokeswoman Mabrie Jackson said the popular grocery store’s point of sales systems don’t depend on WiFi, but store employees were sent outside to curbside pickup spaces to help customers whose cell phones were inoperable.

Other carriers besides AT&T were affected. Cricket Wireless had more than 11,000, Downdetector.com reported. Verizon had more than 3,000 outages and T-Mobile had more than 1,000 outages. Boost Mobile had more than 450 outages.

Verizon and T-Mobile both reported that their users encountered difficulties trying to connect with customers on affected networks.

“We did not experience an outage,” T-Mobile said in a statement. “Our network is operating normally.”

Verizon had a similar comment, saying it was unaffected by AT&T’s outage.

“Verizon’s network is operating normally,” Verizon told CNN in a statement. “Some customers experienced issues this morning when calling or texting with customers served by another carrier. We are continuing to monitor the situation.”

User reports on Downdetector about a T-Mobile outage, the company added, “is likely reflecting challenges our customers were having attempting to connect to users on other networks.”

It’s not the first time AT&T has suffered a widespread outage. In 2008, the company dealt with an extensive wireless internet failure in the U.S. Northeast. In that incident, a glitch in the way the company’s network was routing traffic was identified as the culprit and the service failure was relatively short-lived.

In 2020, AT&T internet and phone service was knocked out in Nashville by an explosion in the city’s downtown area.

T-Mobile also has been hit with widespread outages, including one last February and another in 2020 that prompted the FCC to launch a probe.

“In my experience, this type of outage can negatively impact financial results in the quarter in which it occurs and cause short-term lost goodwill with customers,” David Heger, an analyst at Edward D. Jones & Co., said in an email. “However, it does not have a longer term impact on the business.”

Bloomberg Intelligence analysts John Butler and Hunter Sacco wrote in a note that AT&T could take a reputational hit from the outage. “... Network reliability likely plays a big role in customers’ choice of a provider,” they wrote.
