Collaboration is the theme of new Canvas integrations from Google: Google Assignments LTI 1.3 Update and Google Meet LTI

google assignments lti 1 3

As educators, you strive to make a difference every day in your students' success while balancing your fast-paced and multi-faceted lives. From lesson planning to reviewing student work to managing your classrooms, you need all your teaching and learning tools to work seamlessly together in one place. It's essential your edtech tools are meaningful, secure, and flexible so that you can focus on student outcomes and not on technology.

Today, we're announcing that Google Assignments LTI 1.3 now integrates with Collaborations in Canvas LMS, the latest feature to round out the Google Assignments LTI 1.3 tool. With the addition of Collaborations, teachers and students can work together in the same document at the same time, optimizing the teaching and learning experience with Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and now Forms, Drawings, Sites, and Jams.

Here's what's new from Google integrations:

  • Collaborations feature enabled across Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Drawings, Sites, and Jams in Google Assignments LTI 1.3
  • Educators should start transitioning to Google Assignments LTI 1.3 (from Google Apps LTI)
  • There is additional security with LTI 1.3
  • Google Apps LTI will end-of-life in 2024
  • Google Meet LTI will be available for free for back-to-school 2024

Additionally, in the spirit of collaboration, Google is announcing plans to build Google Meet LTI for Canvas, which will be available at no charge to all Canvas LMS users by back-to-school 2024. Whether teaching remotely, in-person, or in a hybrid model, video collaboration helps your school community stay connected and keeps continuity of learning through sick days, snow days, or other unforeseen events.

Improving collaboration and streamlining coursework

In 2020, Google released Google Assignments LTI 1.3, which uses the latest Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standards. Leveraging the collaborative power of Google Workspace for Education, it allows educators to distribute, analyze, and grade student work—for no additional charge for Canvas and Google customers.

Educators with paid editions of Google Workspace for Education get access to premium features, like new collaboration features in Docs and unlimited originality reports , which encourage critical thinking while helping instructors scan for potential plagiarism.

Google Assignments LTI 1.3 now integrates with Collaborations and allows teachers and students to work together in the same document at the same time. With this launch, Google Assignments LTI 1.3 has all of the functionality of the older Google Apps LTI and now includes improved security, flexibility, and integrations.

With the older Google Apps LTI, educators and students can collaborate on Docs, Sheets, and Slides. The new Google Assignments LTI 1.3 with Collaborations also supports Collaboration in Forms, Drawings, Sites, and Jams. Additionally, Google Assignments LTI 1.3 is built on the latest security standards of LTI 1.3. Google Assignments LTI 1.3 provides flexibility with the choice to grade using Canvas Speedgrader or Google Assignments, whichever tool best fits your needs.

Let's take a quick look:

Transitioning from Google Apps LTI to Google Assignments LTI 1.3

It's time to start transitioning to Google Assignments LTI 1.3. Beginning in August 2023, Canvas users will need to install the Google Assignments LTI 1.3 tool going forward and will no longer be able to install Google Apps LTI. No further development will be made on the Google Apps LTI tool. Current Google Apps LTI users will retain access but should start transitioning to Google Assignments LTI 1.3 to improve collaboration in your class. When moving over to Google Assignments LTI 1.3, educators will need to re-create their assignments and can leverage this step-by-step guide to help with the transition. Google Apps LTI will reach end of life in 2024, meaning users will no longer be able to access the Google Apps LTI tool.

Secure, reliable meetings in Canvas, powered by Google Meet

Another new tool integration between Google and Instructure announced today is Google Meet LTI. Meet LTI is an integrated application that will give students and educators an easy-to-use, reliable, and secure video conferencing tool within Canvas. Canvas users will be able to virtually connect school communities for classes, parent-teacher conferences, professional development, and more. Meet LTI will be available at no charge to all Canvas and Google Workspace for Education users by back-to-school 2024.

Ready to get started? Administrators can turn Google Assignments LTI 1.3 on within Canvas now. Visit this page to learn how to get started and make teaching and learning even more collaborative.

Canvas Collaborations moving to Google LTI 1.3 in December

by Beth Cartwright | Oct 27, 2023 | Featured

Google Assignments LTI 1.3 now integrates with Collaborations in Canvas, the last feature needed to reach parity with the legacy Google Apps LTI integration.  The Google Apps integration in Canvas was updated to LTI 1.3 in June, 2021 , but only updated two of the three Google capabilities in Canvas – the Google Cloud Assignment was replaced with the more robust Google Assignments integration and the legacy Google Drive integration was replaced with more flexible and secure Google LTI 1.3 Google Drive integration. The third capability, Canvas Collaborations, was not supported at the time and has continued integration based on the legacy Google Apps LTI.  In August, Google announced that Google Assignments LTI 1.3 now supports Canvas Collaborations.

google assignments lti 1 3

Google Apps LTI will reach end-of-life on June 30, 2024 , and users will no longer be able to access the Google Apps LTI tool.  For this reason, Canvas@UD will be discontinue support of the legacy integration in Collaborations starting at the conclusion of the Fall 2023 term.  The integration will be removed December 29, 2023.

Any collaborations created in previous courses with the legacy integration can still be accessed in your Google Drive.

Starting in Winter 2024, all Canvas Collaborations will be created with the Google Assignments LTI 1.3 integration.  Differences in the new integration include:

  • More Google file types are available to create the collaboration:  Google Docs, Slides, Forms, Drawings, Sites, or Jamboards.
  • Only individuals can be added as collaborators.  Multiple individuals can be selected, but groups are no longer presented as a selection for class collaborations.

Bringing Collaborations in Canvas to Google Assignments

Not familiar with Canvas Collaborations?  Collaborations provide your students easy access to a shared file in Google Drive through your Canvas course.  A collaboration provides a seamless workflow for access and granting permissions and eliminates the need to switch between multiple platforms – students can access the collaboration directly from their Canvas course to edit and collaborate with peers.  Here is how it works:

  • The file is saved in the Google Drive of the collaboration creator.
  • The file has “restricted” access and students are added as editors to the file the first time they access the collaboration.
  • Student can access the  file from within their Canvas course or course group space.
  • The whole class or selected members can work together on the file.
  • The file also appears in students’ “Shared with me” list in Google Drive for alternate access or to submit to a Canvas assignment.

Enhanced Collaboration and Seamless Grading With Google Assignments in Canvas

November 6, 2023

Google Assignments LTI 1.3 has just reached a significant milestone by integrating with Collaborations in Canvas, completing its transition from the legacy Google Apps LTI. This means instructors and students can now collaborate in real-time on several types of Google Workspace files, including Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and more. This enhanced integration also offers improved security and flexibility.

The Educational Technology Services team (ETS) will soon transition from Google Apps LTI to the new Google Assignments LTI 1.3 in Canvas. The transition is essential to enhance collaboration and streamline coursework.

Key Benefits:

  • Seamless Workflow: Users can access and collaborate on Google Workspace files within the Canvas Learning Management System, eliminating the need to switch between multiple platforms.
  • Real-Time Collaboration: Multiple users can work simultaneously on a document, allowing for real-time collaboration and fostering teamwork among students.
  • Version Control and History: Collaborations automatically tracks changes, ensuring transparency and accountability. Users can view revision history, restore previous versions, and see who made specific changes.
  • Simplified Grading: Instructors can easily access and evaluate collaborative assignments, providing feedback and assessing individual contributions within the familiar Canvas grading interface.

This transition promises a more efficient and secure way to work with Google Workspace files within Canvas, providing a seamless experience for both teachers and students.

We will share more information and key dates about the transition in future announcements. If you have any questions, please contact the ETS team at [email protected] .

Thank you,

Chapman University Information Systems and Technology team (IS&T)

Announcing enhanced Google integration with Canvas

On August 31, 2023, we added a Google integration to canvas.stanford.edu that will interest both students and instructors.

  • Students can add files directly from their Google Drive to Canvas File Upload Assignments . Submitted Google Docs, Spreadsheets, and Presentations will automatically be converted to their Microsoft equivalents (e.g. Google Presentations become PPT files) and be accessible to instructors in Canvas SpeedGrader.
  • Instructors and students can create Collaborations in Canvas for Google Docs, Sheets, Presentations, Drawings, Forms, Jamboards, or Sites for the whole class or selected members to work on together.
  • Instructors and students can embed Google Drive files using the Canvas Rich Content Editor in Discussions, Announcements, and other tools that use the editor.
  • Instructors can add Google Drive files to Canvas Modules .
  • Allows instructors to create and distribute an editable copy of a template Google Doc, Spreadsheet, or Presentation to each student.
  • Allows students to run an originality report on their work before turning it in to make sure they have quoted sources on the open web, if the instructor has enabled the plagiarism detection option. Note: Instructors must give “ clear advance notice ” before turning this option on).
  • Note: Using Google Assignments as an External Tool can be complex so we recommend instructors read Getting Started with Google Assignments and familiarize themselves with its options and caveats before attempting to use it.

The latest Google integration, Google Assignments (LTI 1.3), is now pre-installed. It is more secure and enhances and expands on the functionality of the previous Google integrations it is intended to replace.

  • An earlier Google integration, called Google Drive (LTI 1.1), was available on request but is no longer available.
  • A more limited integration called Google Docs is still pre-installed in Collaborations, but will become unavailable in 2024.

A note before use

We recommend using your university Google account ( [email protected] ) when accessing this functionality, even if some functionality can be accessed with a personal Gmail account. You can only create a Google Assignment and collaboration from your [email protected] , but other features allow you to choose a Google account. While we don’t expect you will be sharing high risk data which would require the use of your [email protected] account, for your own privacy and to avoid confusion that can be caused by switching accounts, we don’t recommend signing in with your personal Gmail account.

Either way, keep in mind that if you do sign in with your personal email,

  • Collaborators will see your personal Gmail when they view the people with access to the file or project.
  • Files shared via Canvas modules or the rich content editor will have your personal Gmail associated with it and be shared with anyone who has the link in order for it to be visible to the class.
  • Teachers will see your personal Gmail when you are responding to a Google Assignment (this is not true if you are responding to a file upload Canvas assignment by clicking the Google Drive LTI 1.3 tab; those files are converted to docx, xlsx, and pptx).
