How to Use Chrome Extensions on Android Mobile Browsers

Want to use your favorite Chrome extensions on mobile? Here's the trick to get those add-ons working on Android.

The desktop version of Google Chrome supports extensions that help improve productivity and the web browsing experience. Unfortunately, Google Chrome users on Android don't get the same treatment. This is because Google doesn't provide a way to add Chrome extensions to its mobile browser.

But there are several workarounds to this. An easy way is to use a third-party Chromium-based browser, like Kiwi Browser or Yandex. This guide shows you how to install Chrome extensions on Android.

How to Add Chrome Extensions on Android Using Kiwi Browser

Kiwi Browser is a web-browsing application that supports Chrome extensions on mobile phones. The browser installs fast and loads up quickly. Here are steps to add Chrome extensions on Android using Kiwi Browser.

  • Make sure it's the latest version; otherwise, sideload the app's latest release. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to sideload apps on Android .
  • Launch the browser. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner and select Extensions .

Launch Kiwi Browser

  • Now enter https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/extensions in the URL bar to access the Chrome Web Store on mobile.
  • Browse through the Chrome Web Store to find the extension you want to add. Alternatively, search for a specific extension by entering its name in the Chrome Web Store's search box.

Kiwi's Chrome Web Store

To manage the extensions on the browser, hit the three dots in the upper-right corner. Then, select Extensions to access a catalog of installed extensions you can disable, update, or remove with a few taps.

While you can install Chrome extensions on Android, there's no guarantee all of them will work. This is because Google Chrome extensions aren't optimized for Android devices.

How to Add Chrome Extensions on Android Using Yandex Browser

Just like Kiwi, Yandex Browser is Chromium-based and supports Chrome add-ons on mobile devices. Here's how to install Chrome extensions on Android using Yandex Browser.

  • Download Yandex Browser with Protect from the Play Store and open it.

Besides Yandex and Kiwi, there are a variety of other fast Android browsers that you may want to try. Whether you prioritize privacy, convenient web browsing, or environmental responsibility, Android browsers have something to offer everyone.

Install Chrome Extensions on Android to Enhance Your Browsing Experience

It's easy to install Chrome extensions on a desktop, yet quite hard to install the same extensions in Google Chrome for Android. One of the easiest ways to install Chrome extensions on Android is to use an alternative to the default Chrome browser.

Chromium-based browsers, like Kiwi and Yandex, support the installation of Chrome extensions on mobile devices from the Chrome Web Store. But there's no guarantee that all extensions you download and install will work on your mobile browser. Simply install and try your beloved Chrome extensions and see which one works best and which one outright doesn't.

How to Get Chrome Extensions on Android

how to add extension in google chrome mobile

Whether you’re a student or work from home or an office, Chrome has some great extensions that help with organization, productivity, learning, and entertainment. You’ve probably discovered quite a few of these handy extensions and plugins on your computer. So, how can you get these extensions on your Android device as well? Is it even possible?

The good news is that it’s possible and relatively easy to get your favorite Chrome extensions on your Android device, and we’ll show you how. In this article on Chrome extensions for your Android device, we’ll be covering the following topics:

  • Why should you get Google Chrome Extensions for Android?
  • Is there a difference between Chrome mobile extensions and PC extensions?
  • Steps to get Chrome extensions on Android
  • Steps to remove Chrome extensions from Android

Why Should You Get Google Chrome Extensions for Android?

For most of us, our Android devices are so much more than just a phone. It’s also a work tool, diary, day planner, source of inspiration, meal planner, exercise planner, and more. It just makes sense that with the wide range of extensions available to help with all these, we’d want it available on our mobile device as well.

Think about how many times you have to type emails from your device . How many of these emails are professional? If you had the Grammarly Chrome extension on your Android phone, you’d be assured that your emails are written correctly. Perhaps privacy is your main concern, and you’d like to have the Privacy Badger extension for Chrome on your Android device to also offer its protection there? These are just a few of many examples as to why you should get Chrome extensions on your Android device.

Is There a Difference Between Chrome Mobile Extensions and PC Extensions?

There is a significant difference when it comes to Chrome Android extensions and those available on PC. Google Chrome is one of the most popular browsers on Android and Windows devices. It is one of the fastest, securest, and easiest to use. You also have the added benefit of having a wide range of extensions and add-ons available so that you can completely personalize your browsing experience.

These Chrome extensions are readily available on your PC Chrome browser, but for some reason, they are not yet available on the Android Chrome version. This is odd considering that Google created both Chrome and Android. One would think they would’ve made it possible to install Chrome extensions on your Android device. This is especially true when you consider that Firefox users have been able to install and use Chrome extensions for a while.

The only way that you’ll be able to use Chrome extensions on your Android device is by using another Chromium browser. Luckily for you, there are many good chromium-based browsers available for Android that also support Chrome extensions. Here are a few of our favorite chromium browsers to look at:

  • Yandex (most popular option)
  • Kiwi Browser
  • Bromite Browser
  • Dolphin Browser

Steps to Get Chrome Extensions on Android

Now that we’ve covered a bit about why you’d want to use extensions on Android, and the key difference between Chrome on PC and Chrome on Android, let’s get into the actual steps you need to take to install Chrome extensions on your Android device.

Step 1: Download New Browser

First, you’ll have to download a new chromium browser that is able to access the Chrome Webstore and install extensions. To do this, you can go into your Play Store and download one of the browsers mentioned above. Yandex seems to be one of the favorites, especially when it comes to also using Chrome extensions.

Step 2: Make the New Browser Your Default

Once the new browser has been downloaded and installed on your Android device, you need to make it the default browser. Open the phone settings on your Android device and tap on ‘Apps and Notifications’. Next, tap on ‘Advanced’ and then tap on ‘Default App’.

Step 3: Go to the Chrome Webstore

Now you can go into your new browser and type in chrome.google.com/webstore to go to the Chrome Webstore.

chrome extensions on android

Step 4: Search for the Extension

In the search bar, type the name of the extension you want. You can also search for the type of extension you want if you don’t know the exact name. Once you see the extension you’d like in the search results, you can click on it to get more information and proceed with installing it should you wish to.

Step 5: Install the Extension

Click on the extension in the search results; you will be taken to a page with more information and reviews of the extension. If you want to download it, tap on ‘Install’ at the bottom of the page. Once the extension has been installed on your Android device, it will automatically be added to your browser.

Tip: Be aware that not all extensions will work on your new browser. There are still limitations to the types of Chrome extensions that will work on your mobile device. However, there are a few that generally work well. This might take some trial and error to find the right mobile Chrome extensions.

Install the Extension

Steps to Remove Chrome Extensions on Android

Since there is a bit of trial-and-error with Chrome extensions on Android devices, you may have to remove extensions after installing them. This could be because they don’t work on your device, or perhaps they don’t do what you hoped they would. Here are the steps to disable and remove extensions and add-ons.

Step 1: Open Your Browser

Open your browser that has the extensions or add-ons you want to remove.

Step 2: Open Your Browser Settings

Now, tap on your browser settings. This is usually represented by three vertical dots.

Step 3: Navigate to Your Extension

Once in your browser’s settings, tap on ‘Add-ons and Themes’ or similar (this title may vary between different browsers) and then tap on ‘Extensions’.

Navigate to Your Extension

Step 4: Disable Extensions

Scroll through the list of installed extensions until you find the one you want to disable or remove. If you want to disable the extension, you can tap on the toggle.

Step 5: Remove Extension

If you want to completely remove the extension, you’ll need to tap on the three vertical dots next to the extension and then select ‘Remove’.

Bottom Line

Having access to your favorite Chrome extensions on Android can make all the difference between an ok browsing experience and a great one. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to do this with your Chrome browser. Luckily there are many other chromium browsers such as Yandex or Firefox that allow you to install Android Chrome add-ons.

Articles like this make I want to stop reading this blog.

It seems Dolphin browser does not allow Chrome extensions.

There have been many comments with regards to the quality of ghacks.net writer Shaun and the quality of his article on this page. The author generally does not report well and is deceptive or uncareful about the accuracy of the information he presents. The author also seems to unreasonably impose his own or other values onto the readers.

With regards to the subject of the article of Android browsers that support extensions, I shall provide my experience. There are a few Android web browsers that I have tried that support browser extensions.

There is Firefox and a fork of Firefox, Fennec F-Droid (available on F-Droid). My understanding is that extension support for newer Android Firefox is more limited than older versions of the browser, but I have not tested such newer versions. I could confirm that Fennec F-Droid 68.12.0 is the last version that allows the general use of Firefox extensions. Presumably Firefox 68.x series would be the last Firefox version series to fully support extensions.

There is Kiwi Browser. Kiwi Browser is a Chromium-based browser. Kiwi Browser does have decent support for Chromium extensions. Unfortunately, newer versions of the browser have rather, in my opinion, severe problems. Those problems are that the address bar/URL bar/omnibox does not show the full URL unless one focuses the address bar and that the app nags via system notification that Google Play services are not available when Google Play services are disabled, not installed, or otherwise unavailable. A member of the XDA Developers forums has tried to make the Kiwi browser developer aware of these issues (see https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/app-4-1-kiwi-browser-chromium-adblock-caf-night-mode-2021-07-29-active.3797252/post-85486391 ), but to date, the issues still manifest on current versions. Kiwi Browser has three different GitHub repositories to download its browser from. The repositories have different browser versions and the same browser versions are typically not duplicated amongst the repositories. I would state that the last known good version of Kiwi Browser for Android is 570536402 and is available for download at https://github.com/kiwibrowser/src/releases .

Ungoogled Chromium has extension support for a set of some now older versions. The extension support feature was dropped. The last version of Ungoogled Chromium to support extensions was version v88.0.4324.182-2-Extensions. Unfortunately, extension supporting downloads are no longer available for download, as older versions of the browser beyond the current few are not being offered anymore. I have never actually tested the extension support of the browser versions that supported extensions.

Yandex browser and Samsung Internet browsers reportedly also have extension support, but I have not tried those browsers.

Brave Browser was to add extension support and it should have been implemented by now, but I have not looked much into the status of it nor have I tested Brave Browser myself.

Kiwi is spyware https://github.com/Tobi823/ffupdater/issues/35

Oops, got mixed up with desktop.

Can’t you just, like, install extensions the same as always?

Next article: How to Drink Water. Which will be a garbled ad for some stupid phone culture vitamin water crap.

This ShaunBot thing seriously needs an algorithm fix. It’s good for laughs for sure.

You gotta be kidding me?! I read most of the article thinking you had a way to somehow install Chrome Web Store extensions on the mobile Chrome browser. And your solution is to get another Chromium-based browser?! And then see how that works?! Oh, how brilliant! Thanks for wasting my time!

Same here. None of the alternative browsers work for me because they can’t sync with desktop Chrome. Firefox can sync with desktop Firefox, but the mobile version is broken on Pixel phones.

Try Focus, it has become more FF than mobile FF. You can access about:config now. IDK if your sync issue will be fixed but may be worth a try.

Too many “smartheads” free for writing their recommendations. Do research before you go, pls.

And most of the Android browsers he recommends don’t actually support extensions. Yandex’s support is broken, Kiwi does support them, but nothing else.

Another barrage of Android coming? As someone who uses Apple/IOS exclusively, why are we being ignored?

Kiwi is the king of Android browsers.

This workflow absolutely does NOT work in Firefox for Android.

On Samsung galaxy tablet it doesn’t work at all. Chrome browser is default, version is 96.

For the use of extensions, download the Kiwi browser from the Play Store. Google Chrome doesn’t support extensions on Android.

Grammarly is a privacy hell, it sends sensitive data away while this should work locally instead. That should be already enough to avoid it.

However, it’s also combined with identifying data like email address or Google/Facebook account, and unique device identifiers for some reason. The company does not hide that humans may read the content as part of normal use of the service, even when no human proofreading was requested. The third-party plugins with their own privacy policies are probably another trap. And as usual with such businesses, they admit that they will sell all that sentitive data to anyone who will buy their company. That last point is usually overlooked because such businesses include it so often and one may falsely assume that the buyer will not be worse than the current owner, but it’s like they are probabilistically selling your sensitive data for any purpose if that becomes profitable enough.

Ublock Origin is far superior to Privacy Badger and is the first one that one would expect to be recommended.

The main security problem by far being privacy on the web, Chrome is not one of the securest, but one of the least secure. Even on the minor part of security that Google defines as the only one that matters, Google is often less secure than ethical competitors, for profit reasons.

Google did indeed not copy its Mozilla Corporation puppet by supporting extensions (typically adblockers, that’s mostly why, nothing “odd” here) on mobile, instead Mozilla Corporation copied its Google pimp in mostly removing extension support from mobile, for the same reason that extension support is generally speaking pro-user and Google-hostile. There was a lot of propaganda (from Mozilla Corporation guided ghacks commenters for example) during the beta phase of the version that would remove extension support, to promise that the removal was only temporary, which proved to be a lie like as usual.

• Kiwi Browser: https://github.com/kiwibrowser/src.next/releases https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kiwibrowser.browser and supports Chrome extensions. • Yandex Browser does support Chrome extensions, but breaks some services. Used and abandoned it. • Bromite Browser will only support extensions, if Chromium will support it. So no extensions here. https://github.com/bromite/bromite/blob/master/FAQ.md#does-bromite-support-extensions • Dolphin Browser itself won’t allow Chrome extensions. They have a few for the browser made by themselves, but that’s all.

Please, inform yourself before you copy/paste an article from another website. Thanks.

This. Author didn’t do enough research.

Author didn’t do any research.

Wow, this is really unprofessional. Ghacks has really stooped low enough to be scraping the bottom of the barrel… unfortunate.

Yes Claymore is 100% right on everything he said. Plus when Bromite tried to do extensions they actually copy-pasted from Kiwi (but they abandoned) so just stick to Kiwi or Yandex.

I don’t know if anyone has tried it yet (I haven’t because I don’t have an Android phone on me right now) but if it was possible to install uBO in Bromite that would be the ultimate browsing experience.

Bromite doesn’t support extensions btw.

firefox is a chromium browser?

No, but the extensions are identical underneath so there have been ways for Firefox to run Chrome extensions for years now.

They are similar but not identical. The subtle differences prevent many Chromium addons from running on Firefox.

That said, this article is a new low for ghacks.

Shaun seems to think it is!

Can you install Chrome extensions on Android? This question appears all the time. Considering both Google Chrome and Android were created by Google, you would think you could use Chrome to its fullest potential. Unfortunately, Chrome extensions are not compatible with Android’s Chrome browser .

How to Install Chrome Extensions on Android

Sure, Chrome on Android has a “Desktop” option, but that only changes the website you view and does not perform like the regular desktop Chrome browser , full of add-ons and features.

With that information out of the way, how can you use your favorite extensions on your mobile device? The straight answer is to use another browser; dozens of them work with Android.

How to Use Chrome Extensions on Android

Chrome uses the open-source Chromium platform for its browsers, and so does a lot of the competition, such as MS Edge, Opera, and Vivaldi . The easiest way to overcome the limitation of Chrome but still keep the regular functionality is to use a Chromium-based Android browser that supports extensions .

Use Kiwi Browser on Android with Extensions (Editor’s Pick)

Kiwi Browser is a Chromium-based browser that supports extensions. Kiwi also features built-in ad-blocking and works very fast. It’s a light download, installs quickly, and fires up fast. The browser is perfect for general use and stops most ads by default.

Kiwi boasts reliable and fast functionality and lets you add Chrome extensions from the Web Store that perform as if you were using a desktop browser.

Use Yandex on Android with Extensions

One of the more popular options is Yandex. This browser is available in the Google Play Store, so there’s no need to sideload any files. Yandex also offers full support of the Chrome Web Store. This browser option is an excellent place to start if you want to use Chrome Extensions on your Android device.

Some users have complained about Yandex because a good amount of the content is in the Russian language . The app only has settings to set the location as the following countries: Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, or Uzbekistan . Auto-detect does not work for other areas that are not on that list. So, if this isn’t the browser you desire, you have other options in this article.

how to add extension in google chrome mobile

  • Tap on “ADD EXTENSION.”
  • Follow the prompts to install the extension, and log in to it if necessary, such as with LastPass or Grammarly.
  • To confirm and view all installed extensions, type “browser://extensions” without quotes into the URL/search bar. Yandex does not feature an “Extensions” option in the settings.

Every extension/add-on you install in Yandex appears in the Android web browser to use whenever you like.

Use Firefox on Android with Extensions

Firefox is well known, and for a good reason. It has always been a close competitor to Chrome (and Chromium) because it is equally fast, more secure, and more interested in your privacy. It doesn’t have the backing of the internet giant, but that hasn’t stopped it from performing exceptionally well.

Firefox for Android supports Mozilla’s custom add-ons , but the mobile version is limited to less than 20 extension choices . Therefore, Firefox for Android doesn’t offer much add-on flexibility.

If you want to try Firefox with limited, precompiled extensions, here’s how to do it.

You can also go to addons.mozilla.org to browse, but the list is the same even though you get a search option. It does not show you all extensions that a PC browser offers.

Android Chrome Extensions FAQs

Where can i get chrome extensions.

Typically, you can get extensions for Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. However, the mobile version of the Chrome browser doesn’t have any. The search option isn’t even available to search for your favorite extensions. This scenario is why you have to use alternative browsers. Some browsers do not offer extensions per se, but they bring many features you may look for in an extension. Others, on the other hand, incorporate add-ons to some extent. Those browsers generally display the browser in desktop format because that’s how extension functionality operates.

What do Chrome Extensions do?

Chrome extensions are similar to the applications on your phone, from saving money with the Honey extension to perfecting your Grammar with Grammarly. Many options are available. The home page of the Chrome Web Store lists some of the more popular options, so if you aren’t sure what you’re looking for, start there.

How to add Google Chrome extensions on Android phones

What are Chrome extensions for?

Before going on to see the process with which we will be able to add Google Chrome extensions on Android mobiles, we must know what these types of add-ons are for . Well, not everyone knows the great utility of having these softwares. Although, if you knew of its existence, since you have used one on a computer, the truth is that it does not change at all.

Mainly, we find that Chrome extensions are a kind of applications, like the ones we install on an Android mobile, but that we install directly in the smartphone’s browser as a plugin.

And, just like the apps that we download from Google Play , these add-ons fulfill a series of specific functions for which they have been developed. For this reason, we can find a wide variety of alternatives , from extensions to instantly translate texts into other languages, to play games, improve security while browsing the web, among many other options.

Where are they?

From a computer, we will have it much easier, because from the web of extensions in the Chrome Web Store we can find each of the most popular ones, as well as those that are less known. However, and as we have been warning you, when using an Android mobile, the truth is that the process is complicated.

Basically, because the mobile version of the Chrome browser does not have this functionality . Therefore, the option to search for accessories from the app that we have installed on the mobile is not available. For this reason, we must resort to other browser applications from which we can add the famous extensions that Google offers us.

For this reason, if you want to find and start using this software on an Android smartphone, we will have to use alternative browsers to Google Chrome . So that you can achieve this, we will explain the methods or, rather, other options with which we can add a large number of functions as an extension to any mobile.

How to install them on Android

Now comes the moment of truth. We will see each of the alternatives that we will have available so that we can add Google Chrome extensions to an Android mobile . In this case, we will show you three options that users who want to use this type of plugin use more. In addition, we will tell you step by step the process that you must follow to install this software in each of the browsers that we will recommend.

From Yandex Browser

First of all, we will go with one of the browser apps that Android users use the most to start using this type of add-on that Google Chrome offers. And, like all the other alternatives that we will see, this application is totally free in the Play Store. By default, the app offers us three extensions: LastPass, Pocket and Evernote. Although, we can always install more options. Therefore, this will be the process that we must carry out on the device:

  • First of all, we will have to download Yandex Browser .
  • Once the alternative browser is installed, it will have to be accessed.
  • Now, from the browser go to the Google Chrome addons store .
  • Choose the extension you like the most and tap on Add extension or Add to Chrome > Confirm the action.
  • When it is installed, we will go to the main menu .
  • Next, we’ll tap on the three vertical dots in the search bar > Settings > Extension Catalog . Inside, we will see the new plugin that we have installed.

In KiwiBrowser

The second option that we will have available from an Android mobile to use Chrome extensions is Kiwi Browser . We can find this browser for free, as well as easily, in the Google app store for smartphones that have its operating system. In any case, these will be the steps that we must follow to start using the accessories on the phone:

  • The first thing will be to download the Kiwi browser on the mobile.
  • When we already have it installed, we will have to access the app .
  • Next, click on the three vertical points that appear at the top right.
  • In this menu, we must press the Extensions option.
  • This page will appear blank, but once we get to installing plugins, this is where we’ll find them.
  • Now, we will have to tap on the ‘ + (from store) ‘ option.
  • We choose the extension we want and click on Add to Chrome > OK .

Finally, we are going with another of the options that users come to use to be able to add complements to Android mobiles . In this case, we will find two extensions in this browser as standard, that is, they are activated by default: YouTube ad blocker and WOT (Web of Trust). Although, we can always add more alternatives if we follow these steps:

  • Download the browser from Google Play.
  • When it is downloaded and installed, we must enter it.
  • Then, click on the three vertical points> Extensions .
  • From this section, we will see the two software options that come by default.
  • Now, we must tap on Google (it appears in blue and underlined) to take us to the add-on store.
  • We enter the web and choose the one we like the most.
  • Next, we tap on Add to Chrome , and that’s it, we can start using the extension from this browser.

Uninstall the extensions

The method to get to uninstall the different extensions that we have been installing in the different browsers that we have just seen, does not have any kind of mystery. If the time has come, we have tired of the plugin or we want to try another one that fulfills the same function, we will only have to follow the previous steps to find the Extensions menu.

From that section, we will always have the option to delete or remove the browser extension that we have started to use. Although, if we prefer, we will always have the option of doing it from the Google Chrome add-on store itself. Of course, we must access it from the browser in which we add the software, clicking on Uninstall .

Therefore, we will have two ways to completely remove this extension that we had added to the Android smartphone. Although, we will also have the alternative of temporarily deactivating the tool if we slide the switch that will appear in blue from the Extensions menu, as we can see in the following image.

Since the revamped Firefox for Android is still based on the Gecko web rendering engine, it supports most desktop Firefox extensions. While the stable version of Firefox for Android can run a handful of extensions, Mozilla has given a way to install a broad range of extensions using the Firefox Beta or Firefox Nightly version. For this, you have to create a Collection of extensions on the Mozilla AMO (addons.mozilla.org) web page using a Mozilla account. Here’s how you can install desktop Firefox extensions on Android using Firefox for Android Beta (the same steps can be followed for the Nightly version as well):

uBlock Origin is one of the most popular extensions to block ads and trackers. 1. What are ‘WebExtensions’?

WebExtensions API is a technology that is broadly in use to build extensions on browsers. All the major browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Edge, and more rely on the WebExtension API to offer a developmental framework that makes it easier to create extensions that work (with minor tweaks wherever needed) across the browsers.

Chrome is a major browser that extensively supports WebExtensions API (with major impending changes to the WebExtensions framework with Manifest V3 ) , and Firefox switched to this API in recent years, so users can access a broad range of extensions as it makes developing extensions for Firefox much easier.

2. Why Chrome on Android doesn’t officially support Web extensions?

Google has earlier stated that it wants to rely on open web technologies such as HTML5 and others on Android — instead of the extensions model that it already uses on the desktop Chrome browser.

3. Why use Chrome Extensions on Android?

Using extensions on Android has a lot of benefits ranging from getting an ad-free web browsing experience to improving privacy by blocking invasive trackers. Along with improving security with password managers such as LastPass as well as adding dark mode support for web pages with extensions such as Dark Reader among other things. We are just scratching the surface here with these examples — visit the Chrome Web Store and Addons.mozilla.org (AMO) to see what you can do with the extensions.

Keep in mind, most extensions are designed for desktops, and the article’s aim is to just get a workaround (whenever the target extension is not officially supported on mobile browsers) so you can see which extensions work on mobile yourself so you can start using them even with some compromises to get your work done.

How to Use Chrome Extensions on Your Android Phone

  • Now You Know

Chrome is the go-to browser on mobile for most people when they are out and about — its 62% global market share as reported by StatCounter proves that. It comes from none other than Google, so one can expect that the browser can provide powerful and fast performance. But if there’s one thing users have been wondering, it is how to use Chrome extensions on Android or iOS.

Chrome extensions enhance the Google Chrome browser with added features. It is exclusive for Chrome users on PC, at least before. Nowadays, you can also enjoy Google Chrome extensions on Android and that is what this article will be talking about.

What Is a Chrome Extension?

Google Search engine

Chrome extensions are programs or plugins that you can install on your Google Chrome browser. They are like mini-applications that can add other functionality to the browser and change how you see a website. Its purpose varies, from adding more security when browsing, helping you remember passwords, or making your online activities more efficient.

You can get a Chrome extension from Chrome Web Store, which has at least 188,620 extensions under the hood to date. Some of the most downloaded types are productivity toolkits, communication web apps, and Chrome interface enhancers to name a few.

Do Chrome Extensions Work on Android?

The straightforward answer is no. Chrome extensions are something PC users have long been enjoying but are missing for mobile chrome users. They won’t work on mobile Chrome because of the difference in architecture between the two versions of the browser.

However, that doesn’t mean that you can no longer use Chrome extensions on your mobile device, or your Android phone at the very least. After all, Chrome is no longer alone in its ability to run extensions and plugins. Let’s now then find out how you can use Chrome extensions on Android, shall we?

How to Use Chrome Extension on Android Then?

You won’t be able to use extensions on mobile Chrome browser — we have established this fact enough — but other mobile browsers might allow you to do so. Enter Kiwi Browser.

Kiwi Browser is a mobile Internet browser that is based on the same open-source software that Chrome uses, Chromium, combined with Webkit. That said, Kiwi is closely similar to Google Chrome with almost the same features and functionality. But one thing that makes Kiwi better than Chrome is its ability to install Chrome extensions on mobile.

That aside, Kiwi Browers has other features that make it a standout in its department. For one, it can block annoying notifications and allows you to import and export bookmarks from and to other browsers. If in case you are into Cryptocurrency, it has a “cryptojacking” protection, a first of its kind for a mobile browser, that supposedly prevents hackers from mining your coins.

With over five million downloads on Google Play Store, it is now gaining more positive reviews. One of the major letdowns of the browser, however, is its unavailability for iOS devices.

1. Download Kiwi Browers from Google Play Store

You can easily install the Kiwi Browser to your phone through Play Store. Since it’s already available to the official app marketplace for Android, it should install automatically once downloaded just like other apps would do. There’s also no need to tweak your settings to install an app from unknown sources , which could compromise your device’s security.

Download Kiwi Browser

2. Launch Kiwi Browser and Enable Extension

how to add extension in google chrome mobile

Once the app is installed, look for it on your app drawer and launch. From its home page, click on options presented as the three vertical dots ( ⋮ ) at the top-right corner of your screen. Select Extensions among the list and switch the toggle button next to developer mode. This will enable you to add an extension from the Chrome web store.

3. Install Extensions to Kiwi Browser

how to add extension in google chrome mobile

You can either manually paste the Chrome Web Store link to Kiwi Browser’s search bar or click the link provided on the Extensions page to see the available extensions you can use. Once you are in the Chrome Web Store, select the extension you want. Similar to Google Chrome PC, an install button will appear next to an extension.

4. Try Out and Manage Your Extensions

how to add extension in google chrome mobile

Check if the extensions you have installed are working properly. We have tried the Grammarly plugin and as you can see, it is fully integrated with the browser.

You can update, disable, or remove extensions on Kiwi Browser through the Extensions page. From the homepage, click on options presented as the three vertical dots ( ⋮ ) at the top-right corner of your screen, then select extensions. From there, you should be able to view the list of extensions on your browser with the option to remove, disable, and update.

Best Chrome Extensions to Use on Browser

There might be a lot of Chrome extensions to choose from, but not all of them can serve their purpose. Some are either outdated or poorly developed, which is why it also helps to be prudent on what plugins you install on your mobile browser. That said, here are some of our favorite Chrome extensions that will optimize your mobile browsing.

1. Grammarly

We’ll guess, you have at least two social media accounts. When adding a post or a caption to a photo, it’s embarrassing when you type the wrong words or worst have your grammar all over the place — the Grammarly browser extension can certainly help you with that. By installing the plugin directly to your browser, it checks and suggests corrections to the things you type before you add a post. It doesn’t only work for social media. It also works when writing an online document, doing a draft of an email, or sending a chat through a browser.

Add to Browser

2. Adblock Plus

The Internet throws us countless ads when browsing online. While you can install an ad-blocker app to your phone, adding an ad blocker plugin still works best when you want to get rid of annoying pop-ups or ad banners to your browser. One perfect example of this is Adblock Plus — a free ad-blocker program. It does not remove ads altogether. It takes consideration of the Acceptable Ads (AA) initiative, which gives you advertisements that matter to you.

Once you get on the screen, it can get a bit hard to keep track of your tasks and stay on the business. If you too are easily overwhelmed by the Internet, installing Todoist on your mobile browser might help you accomplish things that really matter. A productivity app by origin, this Chrome extension will let you streamline the tasks you need to do on a browser. It allows users to create a reading list, organize tasks, and remember deadlines among others.

Add to Chrome

4. Instant Dictionary

You might already encounter an English word you are not familiar with while browsing online once or twice. This is likely to happen even for native English speakers, which is why the Instant Dictionary chrome extension is very helpful. Just by highlighting the word of which meaning you do not know, you will be able to view its definition without leaving the page you are currently in. If you are a Chinese starting to learn English, you might find it helpful that this plugin also displays definitions in Chinese characters.

5. Clean Master

As you surf the Internet, your browser would accumulate caches overtime. They supposedly help websites load up faster when you revisit them, but too much of them will also drag your browser’s performance. If you are not so familiar with how to clear caches on browsers, the Clean Master Chrome extension will help you do it in one click. Similar to an Android cleaner app , it also clears up cookies, histories, and even password if you would allow it to — but on browsers.

Are Chrome Extensions Safe?

When you use extensions on your browser, you basically grant them permission to read and modify certain data on your browser. You also leave them sitting around on your browser, so they might also see the things you do on the Internet. That said, Chrome extensions are potentially dangerous if you don’t practice precaution when using them.

This is not to say that browser extensions are not safe to use altogether. It’s just that, like for mobile apps, some might contain malware that can put your device at risk. If you want to be careful, installing extensions from verified web stores or authors might help. We also won’t recommend that you install multiple or too many extensions on your browser. Not only will it increase the privacy risk on your device, but it can also affect the performance speed of your browsers.

The added features that extensions bring to browsers can help you accomplish more — PC users can attest to that. But if you rely more on mobile, it might be something that you are missing before. Thankfully for Kiwi Browser, you can now also take advantage of Chrome extensions on Android. We just hope that we can also do the same for the Chrome mobile browser. This is not something impossible — a not-so-known browser has done it, so why do a browser as big as Google can’t?

How to install and manage extensions in chrome.

Installing and managing extensions in Google Chrome isn't difficult, but there are some tricks you'll want to know.

Quick Links

How to install chrome extensions, how to manage chrome extensions.

One of the best things about Google Chrome is the ability to extend its capabilities by adding a myriad of extensions to help improve functionality, usability, privacy, and productivity. Here's how to install and manage your Google Chrome extensions.

Download official Chrome extensions from the Chrome Web Store from sources you know or trust. You should  make sure it's safe before installing it  by doing a little due diligence and checking the developer's website---if they have one---ratings, and even skimming through the source code if you're so inclined.

Head on over to the Chrome Web store for extensions  and use either the search bar or browse by category to find the right extension for you. If you're not sure where to start, Google does a pretty good job of curating the store and recommending extensions on the front page.

Use the Search bar or browse by category

After you've found an extension, you want to add, click the icon to be redirected to its page.

Find an extension and click on its image

Once you're on the extension's page, click "Add to Chrome" to add the extension to your browser.

Click Add to Chrome button

A window will pop up and prompt you with the permissions needed by the extension. Read the permissions carefully and decide whether you want to give this extension access, then click "Add Extension."

Click the Add Extension button

After the extension finishes installing, an icon is usually added to your Chrome browser in the top right corner, next to the settings icon.

The new extension docked on the Chrome shelf

As you install more extensions, this area may start to get cluttered. Fortunately, you can right-click the extension’s icon and select "Hide in Chrome menu" to move it into the menu and out of Chrome’s toolbar.

Hiding an extension in the Chrome menu

To open up your extensions page, click the menu icon (three dots) at the top right of Chrome, point to "More Tools," then click on "Extensions." You can also type

into Chrome's Omnibox and press Enter.

Click Menu icon, point to more tools, then click extensions

Scroll through your extensions to find the one you want to manage and click on the "Details" button to pull up its settings.

Click Details button for the extension you want to manage

Otherwise, if you know which extension you want to change---and it's already docked on your browser--- you can right-click the extension's icon on Chrome's shelf, then click "Manage Extensions" to circumvent going to the main extensions landing page.

Right-click extension icon, then click manage extensions

In the settings window, you can turn the extension on or off, allow it in Incognito Mode (most apps are disabled there by default), access an extension's options, open the extension's website, and allow site access .

Site access lets an extension have permissions to certain sites to access site data. This is a recent update that lets people take a more granular approach to the type of data an extension can read and change. You're able to choose from three options: when you click the extension, on a specific website, or on all websites.

A Chrome extension's management settings

That's all there is to it. If you're looking to uninstall any extensions you no longer need, start misbehaving, or were accidentally installed, head on over to

, click "Remove," and then click "Remove" again in the popup confirmation window. Similarly, you can right-click on the extension in Chrome's menu and choose "Remove from Chrome."

How to install Chrome extensions on mobile using the Yandex browser?

How to use Chrome extensions on mobile yandex browser

In the preceding section, we discussed a helpful browser extension. Now, let’s delve into the utilization of the Yandex browser application.

This application operates in a manner similar to the Wiki Browser app.

Both browser applications function as supplementary tools for accessing the Google Extension Store, akin to Google Addon Chrome.

Enabling a browser application on your Android device streamlines the utilization of your preferred extensions.

To commence, initiate the installation process for the Yandex browser application, which facilitates the addition of extensions to Chrome on your mobile device.

The procedure is uncomplicated: access your Google Play Store and search for the Yandex browser.

Upon locating it, proceed to install the application on your Android device. Once the installation is complete, launch the Yandex browser.

In the address bar, enter or copy and paste “chrome.google.com/webstore/” and initiate the search. The process closely resembles that of the KiWi Browser.

Subsequently, you will be directed to the Chrome extensions dashboard.

From here, you can either enter the names of your preferred extensions in the search box located at the upper left corner or select available Google Chrome add-ons from the Webstore dashboard.

Upon making your selection, proceed to download the extension file folder or add it to Chrome.

For efficient management of your extensions, access the Yandex browser and select the three-dot menu.

Navigate to the ‘Android Chrome Extensions’ option, granting you the ability to control the installation or removal of your Google Chrome add-ons from your mobile device.

It’s worth noting that while the Wiki browser Chrome extensions are more convenient to use on Android, both browsers are well-suited for employing your favored Chrome extensions on mobile devices.

What kind of Experience do you want to share?

How Edge on Android extensions keeps me away from Chrome

I'm more impressed with its new extensions menu than I am with its Copilot integration.

Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft Edge on Android now has extensions, making it a viable option for browsing on the go.
  • To try the extensions, download Microsoft Edge Canary and enable the "Android Extension" option.
  • The available extensions (Dark Reader, uBlock Origin, Global Speed) work well and enhance the browsing experience.

Earlier this year, Microsoft renamed Edge on mobile devices to "Microsoft Edge: AI Browser." When I gave it a try, I was unimpressed with how much of an AI browser it actually was. The Copilot integration couldn't handle basic browser tasks that I threw at it, albeit it did a good job summarising content like articles and videos.

So imagine my surprise when it turns out that Microsoft Edge is getting extensions on Android. All of a sudden, I want to get back onto the Microsoft Edge train. I dove in head first to check out these extensions, and while they're still in beta form, they're making me seriously consider hopping onto Edge on Android.

Getting started with extensions for Microsoft Edge on Android

It's not available on the release branch yet.

Going to the Edge Flags page

If you want to give this feature a try yourself, head over to the Microsoft Edge Canary page on the Android store and download the app to your phone. The Canary branch of Microsoft Edge is where Microsoft tries out all of its features before adding them to the main branch. You can see features the day Microsoft releases them for testing, but the app is likely to encounter weird behaviors and bugs as the company works on ironing out the issues.

Once you have the app downloaded on your phone, open Microsoft Edge Canary and type "edge://flags" in the URL bar. In the experiments window, search for "extension" and look for the "Android Extension" option. Set it to "Enabled," and restart Microsoft Edge. Once it's back, press the three bars at the bottom right, long-press on the menu that pops up, then add the new "extensions" option to the panel. Open this, then tap "manage extensions" to get started.

At the time of writing, the extensions option only supports pre-selected extensions, and there are currently only three options to choose from. However, the three available extensions are some of the best Chrome extensions out there: Dark Reader, Global Speed, and uBlock Origin. They're all worth a try, especially uBlock Origin, which we included in our guide on how to get the most privacy in Microsoft Edge .

The extensions integrate nicely with Microsoft Edge

Managing them on the go is a breeze.

Opening extensions on Edge

I gave the extensions a spin on Microsoft Edge, and even though there are only three options to pick from, I was really impressed with what I experienced. I expected the extensions to be a little ham-fisted in their integration, but in actuality, they're presented within Edge almost identically to how you'd find them on any other Chromium browser.

Once the extension is enabled, you can bring it up via the extension menu to tweak its settings. If you've used the extensions before, the UI is immediately familiar, and you can perform all the things you can do on Edge's extensions as you could on a Chromium browser. Even the element picker from uBlock Origin is available. Once you've activated the extensions, you can start browsing, and they'll do their jobs while being kept out of sight.

The extensions work without issue

No watered-down versions of extensions, just the real deal.

Android phone with a Chromebook

Once you get the extensions up and running, they work very well in the background. To test this, I disabled Microsoft Edge's built-in adblocker, then browsed the web with both uBlock Origin and Dark Reader enabled.

I expected uBlock Origin on Android to struggle with some websites that are renowned for showing lots of advertisements, but I didn't see a single one. Likewise, whenever I visited a website that didn't have a dark mode, Dark Reader would kick in and make the website a lot easier on my eyes. This made browsing the web a lot more pleasant than using Chrome for me.

As such, I recommend giving Microsoft Edge a shot if you've previously disliked how it works on mobile. In fact, if you pick up a new Android phone and you're on a clean slate, I'd recommend using Edge instead of your default browser and see how you like it.

Microsoft Edge's best feature is its extension support

I understand why Microsoft went all-in on the AI browser hype; after all, artificial intelligence is a huge topic these days. However, I honestly think that Microsoft will have a lot more success with Edge on mobile if it fleshed out the extension support. Even with this bare-bones test implementation, I'm seriously considering using Microsoft Edge for all my mobile browsing. If Microsoft added more extensions for people to use, or if it even allowed people to grab whatever apps they please, then I'm sure it'll be a huge hit.

With Gemini on your phone, you can type, talk or add an image for all kinds of help while you’re on the go: You can take a picture of your flat tire and ask for instructions, generate a custom image for your dinner party invitation or ask for help writing a difficult text message. It’s an important first step in building a true AI assistant — one that is conversational, multimodal and helpful.

On Android, Gemini is a new kind of assistant that uses generative AI to collaborate with you and help you get things done.

If you download the Gemini app or opt in through Google Assistant, you'll be able to access it from the app or anywhere else you normally activate Google Assistant — hitting the power button or corner swiping on select phones, or saying “Hey Google.” This will enable a new overlay experience that offers easy access to Gemini as well as contextual help right on your screen — so you can, for instance, generate a caption for a picture you've just taken or ask questions about an article you're reading. Many Google Assistant voice features will be available through the Gemini app — including setting timers, making calls and controlling your smart home devices — and we’re working to support more in the future.

On iOS, we’ll roll out access to Gemini right from the Google app in the coming weeks. Just tap the Gemini toggle and chat with Gemini to supercharge your creativity, create custom images, get help writing social posts and even plan a date night right from the Google app. We can’t wait for you to try it.

Gemini is rolling out on Android and iOS phones in the U.S. in English starting today, and will be fully available in the coming weeks. Starting next week, you’ll be able to access it in more locations in English, and in Japanese and Korean, with more countries and languages coming soon.

How to install extensions on Firefox Mobile – December 2023

O ne of the perks of using web browsers on your desktop is the selection of extensions that you can add to them. They add additional functionality to your browsing. Think of them as the equivalent of downloading apps to your phone. Firefox has been testing browser extensions for its mobile app, and now they’re available for the public.

So, if you’re looking to add and use these add-ons to improve your browsing experience, you can. But, how do you install them? How do you access and use them after you’ve gotten the add-ons? Here’s a handy guide to show you how to.

In case you don’t know what browser extensions are

So, web browsers come with a selection of features that define the whole browsing experience. However, there could always be more that it can do. It’s possible to add additional functionality to your browser that the developer didn’t originally put in it. It’s possible to add more features to the browser through what are called browser extensions.

Browser extensions can be thought of as little programs that you can install onto your browser that perform certain tasks. These extensions are typically developed by third-party developers. A developer can make an extension to do just about anything.

There are all types of extensions that you can add on desktop browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. These include voice-to-text dictation extensions, spell-check extensions, picture-in-picture extensions, and thousands more. However, for Firefox mobile, there are far fewer.

How to install browser extensions on Firefox Mobile

The first thing you’ll want to do is download the Firefox app or make sure that you’re using the most up-to-date version of it. Open the app and access the three-dot menu on either the top or bottom of the screen. There, in the top section, you’ll see the Add-ons menu item. Tapping on it will open the browser extension sub-menu.

The extensions menu

You’ll see the list of all of the available add-ons that you can install. While there are thousands of add-ons for desktop browsers, there are only 22 at the time of writing this article. The company is currently working on delivering more extensions, so you’ll see the list get longer as time goes on.

Each item will show you the title of the add-on, a short description of it, and its rating between one and five stars. Tap on the item to see additional information on it. You’ll see information like a longer description, the author, the version number it’s on, when it was last updated, and a link to the homepage.

Adding the extensions

If you want to add the browser extension, tap on the “+” button on the right side of the item. When you do that, you’ll see a little popup appear showing you the permissions that the extension needs to function. Review those permissions carefully and decide if you want to give those permissions.

If you’re comfortable, tap on the  Add button on the bottom right. After that, the browser will download and install the add-on. When it’s installed, you’ll see another pop-up appear giving you the option to allow the extension while in private mode. After that, you’re good to go.

Managing the add-ons

When you access the three-dot menu again, you’ll see a little arrowhead on the Add-ons button. When you tap on it, you’ll see the list of some of your installed extensions pop up at the bottom of the screen. If you want to add more extensions, tap on the Add-ons Manager button at the bottom.

When you do that, you’ll see the list of all available extensions just as before. Only, the extensions you’ve installed will be pinned to the top.

If you tap on an extension that you’ve already installed, you’ll see a different page pop up. you’ll see the toggle to enable/disable it along with the toggle to allow/disallow it to run in private mode. Under those, you’ll see the  Settings, Details,  and  Permissions buttons.

Lastly, you’ll see the  Remove  button under all of those options. When you tap it, the browser will remove it immediately. There’s no confirmation screen, so you’ll want to be careful not to press it by accident.

[Updated Dec 2023] Additional add-ons

Since add-ons are officially out of beta, you have access to many more. Just like with Google Chrome, there’s a whole page dedicated to finding new extensions to use. To access these extensions, tap on the three-dot menu in the top right corner of the interface and tap on the Add-ons button. On the dedicated screen, scroll all the way down to the bottom.

You’ll see a  Find more add-ons button. Tapping on that will open a webpage in a new tab. On this page, you’re able to scroll through the ever-expanding collection of extensions that you can install. At the top of the page, you’ll see a search bar that you can use to narrow down your search.

When you find the one you want, setting it up is easy. Just tap on the  Add to Firefox button. You’ll get a dialogue asking you to confirm whether you want to install the add-on. Read the permissions required and tap on the  Add button at the bottom.
