19 Best Places to Find Small Task or Micro Jobs

Our readers always come first.

The content on DollarSprout includes links to our advertising partners. When you read our content and click on one of our partners’ links, and then decide to complete an offer — whether it’s downloading an app, opening an account, or some other action — we may earn a commission from that advertiser, at no extra cost to you.

Our ultimate goal is to educate and inform, not lure you into signing up for certain offers. Compensation from our partners may impact what products we cover and where they appear on the site, but does not have any impact on the objectivity of our reviews or advice.

If you are also short on time and want to make a little extra spending money, a micro job could be the perfect opportunity for you.

If you’ve ever found yourself short on cash, you know how frustrating it is to need extra money and have no viable way of earning it.

Fortunately, things have changed a lot in the past decade. The gig economy has exploded, and now millions of people can complete “micro jobs” to earn extra money on the side.

What are micro jobs?

Micro jobs are small, easy tasks that can be completed in a short amount of time and generally pay between $3 and $100.

They don’t require an interview, meetings, or set hours, and you can perform micro jobs online or in person.

Despite their flexibility, however, the jobs can be somewhat competitive, and pay isn’t always the highest. If you’re in a pinch, they can be a great source of supplemental income, and they often pay in cash.

If you’re short on time, and need money fast, micro jobs (with same day pay) might be the perfect opportunity for you.

19 Best Places to Find Micro Jobs Online

How do you find micro jobs? Online, of course. There are a variety of micro jobs sites that offer options to workers who want to get paid to do tasks online. You can even combine multiple micro jobs, like audio transcription jobs and freelancing writing, to earn more.

If sitting at home isn’t for you, you can also find community-based micro jobs or assist neighbors with short household tasks like lawn mowing or grocery shopping.

Whatever appeals to you, there is a micro jobs website out there that will connect you with people who want to pay for your services.

1. Branded Surveys

tapestri homepage

Taking online surveys is one of the most popular micro jobs of today, and Branded Surveys focuses on just that.

You’ll get 100 bonus points when you create your account . From there, you’ll be matched with surveys that fit your profile. You can earn additional points by participating in challenges, taking the daily poll, and referring your friends and family.

The more you earn with Branded Surveys, the more opportunity you have to earn free rewards. At 600 points, you’ll become a Branded Elite Silver member. Then at 2,100, you advance to Gold. Elite members are automatically entered into random daily, weekly, and monthly drawings where you can earn up to 1,000 points.

It takes 1,000 points before you can cash out. When you’re ready to redeem your earnings, you can choose between PayPal, direct deposit, or gift cards to popular retailers like Amazon, Apple, Lowe’s, and many more.

2. Tapestri

The smallest micro task I can think of is downloading an app and then doing nothing, and Tapestri offers users just that. Like many apps you probably use everyday (Facebook, Twitter, Google Maps, etc.) Tapestri is an app that collects data from its users. But what makes Tapestri different is that it pays users for their data.

When apps like Facebook or Instagram collect your data, they keep it all to themselves and use it to serve you ads. Your attention is being sold to the highest bidder. In other words, you are the product.

With Tapestri, your data is completely anonymous and not tied to you in any way. The app is very transparent in saying “yes, we do sell your data” but, unlike other apps, they pass along a portion of those profits to you. According to their website, users can earn up to $25 per month passively by having the app installed and tracking in the background. No work required.

3. Swagbucks

Swagbucks homepage

Swagbucks is a micro jobs website that awards points for doing easy tasks like shopping at online retailers like Amazon and Starbucks, taking surveys, watching videos, and playing games. The number of points, or Swagbucks (SBs), you earn depends on the task. Swagbucks has a mobile app that allows you to earn points on the go.

You only need around 160 Swagbucks to start redeeming them for cash cards or gift cards to stores like Walmart, Amazon, and iTunes. Occasionally, it has specials where you get the gift cards at discounts below their normal cash value.

24 Short Task Sites for Making Money From Home

Author: Holly Reisem Hanna

February 7, 2023 117 Comments

Is your daily schedule unpredictable? You can still make money from home, just use short task sites. Here are 24 gigs you can do anytime.

If you have a little one at home — you know how difficult it can be to get things done. But just because you have a household filled with chatter and unpredictable schedules doesn’t mean that you can’t work from home. Short tasks, also called micro-jobs or pay-per-task jobs, are the perfect way for busy moms to earn some extra money while still being readily available for their kiddos.

A micro-task job is any job or assignment that can be completed in a short amount of time. The tasks that can be completed vary in nature (writing, editing, taking surveys, transcription, watching a video, online research, etc.), as does the pay. But the reason this is such an excellent opportunity for moms is that the tasks can be done at any time, and the majority of short jobs don’t require phone work , which requires a quiet household.

If you have kiddos running around your house, here are 24 small task sites that allow you to work whenever you have free time, and make extra money on the side.

4. TELUS International

TELUS International , which acquired Lionbridge, hires independent contractors to work on microtasks like translation, transcription, rating ads, annotation, search engine evaluation, and testing. Once they have your evaluation scores, you’ll receive invites to work on available projects. With these gigs, you can work whenever, wherever, and as much as you’d like.

  • TELUS International has an A- rating with the Better Business Bureau

Fiverr is a little different in that you don’t search for jobs. Instead, you post tasks you’re willing to complete for $5.00-$10,000. Once you make a sale, Fiverr will keep a fee of 20%, and payments will be made via PayPal.

Over at Amazon’s MTurk , you can make money online working on HITS (Human Intelligence Tasks). Amazon MTurk tends to get mixed reviews. Some people complained of low payouts, and others have said their work wasn’t approved, so they didn’t get paid. We have no way of knowing the quality of their work, and if denial of payment was justified, so read through reviews before deciding to join.

Last Words About Short Task Jobs

A few last words about micro-task sites.

There are other micro job sites out there, but not all are reputable. If you find another short task site, please do your research to ensure that they are legit and worth your time. Trustpilot, Glassdoor, Indeed, and the BBB are excellent places to search for reviews. Also, look to see when the app or website was last updated. Apps and websites that are sitting on the web stagnant are susceptible to hackers placing viruses, malware, and trojans which can potentially steal your personal information.

Because opportunities will not always be available, you should consider signing up for multiple sites. This way, you have a better chance of consistently having tasks to choose from. But before you register, you’ll want to create an email account just for these opportunities. Many of these sites send a lot of emails, and it will be easier to manage if you have a separate email account just for your short task jobs.

All of these are independent contracting roles, so you’ll need to set aside money for self-employment taxes.

Lastly, short tasks will not make you rich, but they are an easy way to earn a little extra cash without having to get a job. After all, you’re most likely online, so instead of scrolling through Facebook or Instagram, use your time to make some extra money.

Does anyone test or have any comment about socialtasks.net?

It looks very suspicious. There is no information about the company, and there is no way to contact them. They have vague job descriptions, and there’s no presence of the company other than their website.

From online surveys to envelope stuffing, there are lots of popular get-rich-quick money-making ideas. Do they work? Not really. Could you make some money? Possibly. However, the reality is that there are genuine ways to make money online.

Digital nomads are capitalizing on freelancing opportunities, while marketers are optimizing digital campaigns. Entrepreneurs are building their empires from their living rooms. Armed with just a laptop and steady internet, let's explore some of these legitimate avenues to earn online.

How to make money online: 30 real ways

1. start a dropshipping business.

Dropshipping is a business model where you sell a product to a customer, but the supplier handles the storage, packaging, and shipping on your behalf. You can dropship through your own ecommerce store —just install a dropshipping app and you’ll gain access to dozens of suppliers across various product categories. Some dropshipping apps allow you to hand-pick your product images, edit item descriptions, and give your business a personalized vibe so people will love shopping with you.

What’s the best way to make money dropshipping? Most entrepreneurs focus on a few marketing strategies :

  • Running Facebook ads
  • Having influencers promote their products
  • Sending direct messages (DMs) to potential customers on social media

Ready to start a dropshipping business? Shopify is the platform most online entrepreneurs use to sell products without inventory. With Shopify dropshipping apps, you can source a variety of products and have them shipped to your customers.

2. Try print on demand

Print on demand (POD) is another popular way to earn money online. Many individuals have adopted this business model because it has lower overhead than other businesses.

Print on demand is similar to dropshipping in the sense that you don’t need to carry inventory or ship out products to customers yourself. There are two slight differences, though. First, you can make your own custom products, which is great for brand recognition. Second, you can choose from specific items rather than a vast range of categories. Most print-on-demand companies offer products that are easy to print on, like t-shirts, mugs, and tote bags.

The best way to make money with your print-on-demand business? Free marketing channels . Your best bet would be to promote your products for free on Instagram and TikTok, and through social media influencers who convert their audiences well.

You can get a complete overview of print on demand versus dropshipping by watching us get into a healthy debate with Wholesale Ted about the pros and cons of each business model.

3. Make money with affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing is one of the most popular ways to make money online. Throughout the years, its popularity has gone up and down, but it continues to be an effective way to earn passive income. The best part about affiliate marketing is that you choose from a vast range of companies to partner with, including Shopify , Amazon , and Uber.

This business model allows you to earn a living by promoting other brands. Once you’ve signed up for an affiliate marketing program, you’ll start earning commissions from sales of retail products, software, apps, and more. While the commission may seem small, keep in mind that you can be an affiliate for several brands and promote a variety of products across different platforms.

If you really want to make money online doing affiliate marketing, your best bet is to focus on content marketing. By building out a blog with several pages of high-quality content, you create an asset you can call your own. Strategically place affiliate links in your blog posts to drive traffic to your affiliate partner’s website.

4. Start a YouTube channel

If others are profiting from YouTube , you can too. Your YouTube channel should focus on a single niche so you can build a strong, loyal audience. For example, you can create makeup tutorials, stream video games, review products, teach skills, create prank videos, or anything else you think there’d be an audience for.

The key to earning money on YouTube is creating content people want to watch. Enticing headlines and keyword-optimized descriptions can draw viewers to your videos. Once you hit the 1,000-subscriber mark, you become eligible to earn advertising revenue through running ads on your content.

5. Become an influencer

Building a personal brand can also help you make money online. Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo charges more than $2 million for a sponsored Instagram post, for example. While it may seem like reality stars, singers, and athletes are the biggest influencers, keep in mind that even smaller-scale influencers can make more money today than they did a few years back.

To become an influencer, you need to build a healthy following. The best platforms to get started on? Instagram and TikTok. Some of the biggest non-celebrity influencers often gained their first taste of exposure on these platforms. You might want to check out how to get more Instagram followers if you want to build a big Instagram audience.

To make money as an influencer, you can charge for sponsored posts, add affiliate links in your bio, sell your photos, sell ads on your own podcast, make and sell merch , get paid to appear at events, and more.

6. Create an online course

Selling courses is one of top strategies for earning money online. If you’re an expert in a particular subject, you can monetize your knowledge by creating online courses. These courses can be sold on platforms like Udemy or, if you already have a dedicated audience, through your own website. Some entrepreneurs are making as much as $5,000 per month from online courses .

To build a popular and successful course, look to trending courses in your niche for inspiration. Pay close attention to the reviews. Identify what aspects receive high praise and what elements are criticized. How can you build something that surpasses what’s already available? Aim to create content that addresses common complaints while incorporating the positive aspects that people appreciate.

The platform on which you choose to sell your course will influence your strategy for earning money online. With Udemy, there’s less need for promotion—it’s almost a set-it-and-forget-it situation. Perhaps you’ll want to give it a boost on some blogs or social media networks. If, on the other hand, the course is hosted on your own website, you might consider r unning ads to promote it. Additionally, you could build an email list to market future courses without the added expense of paid advertising. This can provide an effective route for earning money online organically.

7. Publish an ebook

With Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing , it’s never been easier to publish an ebook. All you need to do is write the ebook, format it, create an ebook cover, publish it, and promote it.

You can choose to hire a writer for your ebook, a graphic designer to design the cover, and a manuscript editor to eliminate errors from the content. When researching the topic, focus on keywords based on popular searches on Amazon. The Keyword Tool is a great choice for finding the words people use while searching, so you can craft your title around them.

To generate sales for your ebook, focus on marketing tactics that are proven to attract customers. For example, you can give the first few copies of your book away for free. This helps you create buzz on social media and get some reviews. Getting reviews helps you gain customers via social proof . Other effective strategies for promoting your ebook include influencer marketing and video campaigns.

8. Start a blog

Blogging is one of the oldest methods for making money online. People who love writing tend to start blogs with a niche focus. For example, a blog about procrastination, cars, dropshipping, toys, etc., is often a narrow enough focus to build a loyal following and big enough that you can cover a lot of ground. For those looking to make money online fast, this method can be a rewarding venture.

You can start a blog on various platforms, such as Shopify (remove the checkout feature, so you don’t have to pay a subscription as you build it out) or WordPress. When you start your blog, focus on very specific keywords with a tight focus and continue to expand into other but still relevant categories as you grow and dominate new spaces. This will allow you to build a massive blog over time.

If you’re keen on earning extra cash, blogging offers diverse ways to achieve that goal. You can add affiliate links in your posts (don’t forget a disclaimer). You can monetize your blog by placing ads strategically in your posts. Sponsored posts can help you make money from specific brands—this is popular among review bloggers. Bloggers can also sell digital or physical products on their websites. You can also use a blog to build a personal brand that helps you get speaking gigs, television deals, or big contracts from clients.

9. Consider freelancing

The easiest way to make money online is to take your current job in your 9-to-5 role and do it online instead. For example, if you’re a writer, data entry specialist, graphic designer, teacher, developer, etc., you can market these skills and find clients online who are willing to pay you to apply them.

There’s a never-ending list of job platforms for each type of freelancer too. For example, freelance writers can apply for jobs on specific online writing job boards, but also on general freelance websites like Fiverr , Freelancer , Upwork , and all the others. If you find that your skills can’t be directly used to create income streams , you can try monetizing other transferable skills you may have.

To make money online as a freelancer, you need to start by building out a strong portfolio. That may mean doing free work for some reputable mid-tier brands to start. Once you create a strong portfolio, you can reach out to potential big clients to earn more money online. Remember, freelancing is a numbers game: the more applications you fill out and submit, the more likely you’ll be to get a response back.

10. Create an app

If you’re not a developer, you’re probably looking at this money-making idea and feeling a bit stuck. Fortunately, you can hire someone with programming skills to build an app for you. Sites like Toptal will connect you with plenty of app developers who are open to working with entrepreneurs to turn their vision into reality.

All you have to do is come up with a unique app idea, identify the audience you want to target, and create a brand image for your product. The programmer you hire will take care of things on the development front.

When it comes to making money with your app, your best bet will be to add it to Google Play and the App Store. And while it may seem counterintuitive, having a free app can help you make more than a paid app. With a free app, you can add ads or premium features to help you make money. Since the free app will attract a higher volume of people, it’ll be easier for you to upsell them.

11. Become a writer

With a growing interest in content marketing , more and more companies are looking for writers who can fill their web properties with great content. The secret to succeeding as a writer is to focus on a specific niche. Many writers try to be generalists, covering everything from food to tech. However, a niche focus sets you apart.

What about AI replacing human writers? While AI can generate content, it lacks the human touch. As a writer, your experience in a niche adds value. You can offer thoughts, experiences, and insider perspectives. That’s what brands want. That’s what they pay for.

When applying for writing jobs, be specific. Send relevant samples. If asked for a marketing piece, send one. Don’t send a finance article. Or a fitness one. Why? Hiring managers need to see your understanding of the niche.

Sites for finding freelance writing jobs include:

  • BloggingPro
  • Mediabistro
  • Be a Freelance Blogger

12. Do side gigs

Side gigs can help you make money online while you keep your full-time job. If you’re looking to make an extra couple of hundred dollars per month, this is a great idea. The work doesn’t always last long term, but it can.

Use platforms like Fiverr to find part-time gigs you can do online. As a new entrant in the gig economy, you’ll want to focus on offering a low price so you can get your first review. I’d recommend asking a friend to buy your gig and leave your first review so you can get started faster. Treat the friend like a client and actually deliver a finished product that you can feature in your portfolio.

Another aspect of Fiverr is that it’s largely a numbers game. If you look at top Fiverr users, you’ll see that they have multiple gigs available. The more gigs you have, the more likely it is that you will be found.

If you don’t want to get paid Fiverr prices, you can turn to platforms like FlexJobs to find side gigs. Under its jobs section, you can search for contract or telecommute opportunities. The great thing about the telecommute opportunities on FlexJobs is that you can apply for them in any city in the world.

FlexJobs has a variety of side gigs including writing, business, design, accounting, and more. So, if your talents don’t match up with anything else on this list of money-making ideas, you might want to try a side gig from FlexJobs. Applying to multiple opportunities will increase your chances of landing a few gigs in a short period.

13. Do translation work

Translation is a fairly underserved niche, meaning there’s less competition in this field than in other niche markets. To capitalize on the opportunity, you need to be fluent in at least two languages. If you’re bilingual or majored in a popular language in school, this may be a great money-making idea for you to try out.

You will need to show proof of your ability to translate without using machine translation tools. If you have a language degree or experience translating text, make sure to highlight that in your portfolio or résumé. Most companies will require a translation test, and you can’t use translation tools at any time to help you pass the test.

Sites where you can find translation jobs to make money online include:

  • People Per Hour
  • Protranslating
  • Translators Base

14. Sell your stuff

An easy way to make extra cash is to sell the stuff you no longer use. When using this strategy, ensure that the items you put up for sale align with the interests and needs of today’s buyers.

Most people immediately think of selling their junk like old CDs and DVDs. Considering the digital trends in 2024, CDs and DVDs are less likely to be sought after by buyers. So don’t waste your time trying to sell them.

When you’re thinking about selling your stuff, focus on items like electronics, furniture, toys, and crafts. You can list the same products on multiple platforms, including Amazon, Facebook Marketplace, and your own online store. Omnichannel selling will improve your chances of finding customers for your items.

Want to make a great first impression on the customer? Include high-quality product images in your listings. You can hire a Shopify Expert to create product photos for you or take a photography course that equips you with the skills to shoot and edit your own images.

15. Become an online tutor

If you want to make money online on your own schedule, consider becoming an online tutor. Studenomics covered a story of a person who made $2,100 in one semester from tutoring. Interestingly, he built up his client base through word of mouth , visibility, and great group rates.

If you have a teaching degree, you may be more likely to land a tutoring position. Having a degree or experience in the subject you’re tutoring is essential for this type of job. If you’ve spoken at a conference or event about the topic, you might also be considered for an online tutoring, teaching, or mentoring position.

While sciences and math often have a high demand for tutoring positions, you’ll also find English popular among international audiences. If you’re an expert on a topic, tutoring may be the right platform for you to make money fast.

You can find online tutoring jobs on platforms such as:

16. Drive your car

If you own a car, you can make some spare cash as an Uber driver or delivery person. Even without a car, you can deliver food and other essentials using a bicycle or moped. Uber drivers looking to make even more money can turn their vehicle into a moving billboard with Free Car Media , which wraps your car in a removable vinyl advert.

Interested in making money fast with Uber? If you legally run a side business, you could showcase your products to interested passengers—though not all will be interested. With prior consent, passengers may sift through products you have for sale under the driver’s seat. If they wish to buy but don’t have cash, you can utilize Uber’s tip function for payment. Always ensure that this approach complies with local laws and regulations.

17. Become a virtual assistant

As entrepreneurs build more businesses, the demand for virtual assistants grows. A virtual assistant is a self-employed individual providing various services remotely, such as writing, bookkeeping, social media management, and customer support.

Find virtual assistant gigs on sites like Virtual Office Temps , Indeed , or Upwork . Many have also succeeded by directly reaching out to brands and entrepreneurs. Combining job postings and proactive outreach could land your first client sooner than expected.

18. Become a Twitch streamer

While Twitch started as a gaming platform, it’s quickly evolving to include other types of content. Nowadays, Twitch streaming is an increasingly popular way to make money online. To make money fast on Twitch , you’ll need to grow your following. If you’re consistent, streaming on this platform can help you build a sizable audience fast.

You’ll need to find a popular game or channel that isn’t overly competitive so people can easily find your content. In order to get people to notice your streams, you’ll need to have a consistent style for your channel: Is it going to be funny, educational, or entertaining? Choose your path and stick to it.

There are five ways to monetize your Twitch channel:

  • Sell products
  • Offer brand sponsorships
  • Accept fan donations
  • Offer subscriptions
  • Run Twitch ads

As a Twitch streamer, you’ll want to focus on tapping into all five monetization methods to ensure the highest financial gains. With the right strategy and hard work, you can make a lot of money hosting Twitch streams.

19. Invest in stocks

Investing in stocks can be a way to make money quickly, but it’s not without risk, especially if you’re inexperienced. While the rewards can be high, you might also face losses.

If you have a 9-to-5 job, consider exploring your company’s financial programs. Does it allow investment in company stocks? If so, this could be an option. With company stock programs, your role as an employee may influence the organization’s success. Additionally, if your company offers an RRSP matching program, consider this as a way to save for retirement or a down payment on a home.

20. Sell photography

Whether you’re a professional photographer or just love snapping great pictures, you can make money online by selling your images. Sites like Shutterstock and Alamy are great places to showcase your work. These websites pay royalties to photographers when someone downloads a copy of their image.

If you’re looking to monetize your photography quickly, you can create a listing on Foap , a smartphone app that lets you upload your works and earn cash. When an agency, brand, or anyone else buys a photo or video from your digital Foap portfolio, the app creator shares the profit with you 50/50.

21. Sell clothes online

Have clothes you don’t wear anymore? Rather than letting them sit in your closet, sell them online. There are quite a few websites that let you sell apparel for cash, such as Poshmark , Refashioner , ThredUp , and Tradesy .

You can also explore Facebook buy and sell groups in your community to find people online and sell the items in person. Just be careful of scams and follow the recommended safety precautions.

22. Become an extreme couponer

If you’re looking to save and make a bit of money, couponing can be a viable option. Coupon Chief’s Pays-2-Share program , for example, lets you share coupons and earn a 2% to 3% commission on sales. The key is to share coupons that haven’t been used before.

This method resembles affiliate marketing, where you earn commissions through referral links. Many coupon companies pay their affiliates consistently, making this a legitimate way to earn online. For instance, Coupon Chief has paid over $1.3 million in commissions to date.

23. Buy and sell domain names

If you regularly buy domain names but fail to use them, you can always try to sell them for a profit. Selling domains is ultra-competitive, though. If you own a one-word .com domain, you’ll have a better chance of selling. Words that have a high search volume sell well too.

Also, domains that are on trend now have a better chance of selling. For example, a few years back, fidget spinner domains were an easier sell than they are today. You can search for domain names and buy a custom domain through the Shopify domain registration platform.

You can sell your domains on GoDaddy’s Domain Auction . Look through the domains with the highest bids to see what type of domains sell well. It’ll help you know whether or not your domains are worth selling and how much money you can make selling them.

24. Sell your designs online

Graphic design is an amazing skill that you can monetize in several ways. You can go the print-on-demand route and sell your designs on your own custom products. Alternatively, you can pitch your designs on a crowdsource platform like 99designs .

There’s also the option to create your own graphics and templates to sell on marketplaces like Envato or Creative Market . Or how about picking up some clients and working as a freelance graphic designer? According to PayScale , this role will net you $29.90 per hour, on average.

25. Test websites

If you’re passionate about user experience, UserTesting pays reviewers $10 to give other entrepreneurs feedback on their websites and apps. You’ll be given a set of questions to answer as you browse through a site. That’s one fast way to make money online.

You’ll communicate your ideas and feedback to the entrepreneur through a video while navigating their website or app. Your video is only 20 minutes long, so if you do three videos per hour, you’ll make $30. Other reviewers can take projects quickly, so you have to act fast when a new website or app needs to be reviewed.

26. Get a part-time job

When you’ve done whatever it takes to make money fast but struggle to make an impact, sometimes you’re left with no choice but to get a part-time job. You can browse part-time jobs on Indeed or a niche job board that caters to your field.

Some job websites require an upfront fee to register, so read the fine print carefully. Most sites let you filter for part-time and contract-based jobs, so you should have no problem finding relevant positions to apply for. With many companies hiring part-time, it’s easier than ever to make extra money without working a full week.

27. Become a TikTok consultant

One of the trendiest ways to make money online is to become a TikTok consultant. Brands will contact you for brainstorming video ideas, developing engaging bios, and more. It’s the perfect money-making opportunity for digital nomads —you can run the entire business from your smartphone. Compared to Instagram, TikTok is relatively new and untapped, so helping brands establish a solid presence on the app can potentially make you a fortune.

However, you need to have a few talents before you begin offering TikTok consultancy to businesses. The most important is knowing how to create viral videos that get people to engage with brands. If you don’t have the expertise to drive sales through this platform, you can still learn how to attract customers by taking this TikTok course .

28. Sell greeting cards online

If you have a knack for picking out the perfect greeting card for different occasions, this might be an easy way to make money online. However, it’s not recommended that you market your services to everyone and anyone—it’s not a smart way to do business. Instead, design or source greeting cards that appeal to a certain segment of the population.

For example, you can make greeting cards that cater to C-level executives wanting to thank their senior vice presidents for making profitable decisions last year. Or you can target healthcare professionals who want to thank their patients for choosing their clinic. For designing the cards, you can use an online graphic tool like Photoshop or Canva .

29. Offer virtual local tours

Do you know your town or city well? Share it with people by offering virtual tours. This can be a way for tourists and others to explore new places without leaving home.

You can use video calls to show historical sites, cultural spots, and local favorites. Share local stories and facts. Allow people to ask questions and see things up close. Offer different tours, like ones for food lovers or history buffs. Work with local shops so tour guests can buy local products.

30. Become a reseller

Reselling products is a way to make money without creating items. You can buy vintage or collectible items and then sell them. If you want to focus on specific products, you can become a certified distributor of a brand in your area.

Start by finding brands to resell on wholesale directories and platforms like AliExpress. Then, set up an online platform to sell your chosen products. Remember, you will need to manage inventory. This takes effort, but it doesn’t require making products.

Start your online earning journey today

Making money online can help you stay afloat during these troubled times, but it can also help you escape your 9-to-5 job so you can become a full-time entrepreneur. By brainstorming online business ideas and choosing to start an online business, you gain more financial freedom , improve your financial security, and inch closer to living life on your terms .

It really is possible to earn a living online if you work hard and stick with it. So, which money-making idea will you pursue first?

The world is becoming more virtual, increasing the number of ways you can make money online. An online work-from-home situation offers a lot of perks, including flexibility, a comfortable environment, and no stressful commute. Whether you’re stuck in an office and ready to make a change—or are just looking for a convenient way to make money on the side—check out this list of options on how to make money online.

How to make money online

1. play online games.

If you used to get yelled at for playing computer games instead of doing your homework, your time has come: Now you can earn money for doing that. Game creators eager to build traffic and test concepts will pay if you play. And websites such as Swagbucks are the way to cash in. And as the name says, you’ll be paid in bucks—through Paypal transfer, check, or gift cards if you prefer. Payments can be small, but they add up.

2. Complete online surveys

If you’re looking to get rich, online surveys are not the way to do it. But on websites like InboxDollars , filling in surveys will let you make some extra cash to spend on daily expenses such as gas and groceries—or get gift cards for different stores and restaurants like Amazon, Starbucks, and Target. According to its website, each InboxDollars survey takes between three and 25 minutes to complete, and pays between $0.50 and $5. Occasionally, you might find a survey worth $10 or $20 if you fit a specific demographic—which means these small rewards can actually add up pretty quickly.

3. Start a side hustle

Having a side hustle or side gig in addition to a full-time job is pretty normal these days. Many people make a decent amount of money using side-hustle apps such as DoorDash or Uber. If you don’t want to go door-to-door delivering food—or don't have a car or the car insurance needed to become an Uber driver—you can look for other opportunities. With apps like TaskRabbit or Handy, you can get hired for random odd jobs in your neighborhood. If you want a side hustle that gets you outside and moving, check out the Rover app to find dog-walking clients.

4. Sell websites (or online businesses)

Got a website or online business with a decent following or perhaps a desirable domain name registered in your name? There’s money to be made from flipping websites. You just need to know where to look. Often the biggest hurdle is figuring out how much the website or business is worth and finding interested buyers. Websites are said to be worth two to three times the annual profit they generate, although that isn’t set in stone and can vary considerably. For a better idea, consider getting a professional valuation. Once you’ve settled on an asking price, look for an online marketplace that specializes in these types of transactions. It’s important to find somewhere safe that can attract as many potential bidders as possible. Flippa , which also offers a free website valuation tool, is considered one of the best.

5. Start a blog

If you love to write and have something useful or inspiring to say, consider starting a blog. A blog is a website where you regularly share your ideas or expertise with your readers. Before you start sharing your thoughts, you need to create a website. You can hire someone to build it for you or do it yourself. Website builders like SquareSpace make it really easy to put together a website on your own even with no previous experience. Once your site is up, it’s all about writing good content consistently and promoting your blog to attract readers and subscribers. If you want to monetize your blog, you need an audience. Then, you can use methods like affiliate marketing (earning income through product recommendations) and ads. You can also create your own product or service and sell it on your website.

6. Write a newsletter

An online newsletter is an email you send out to your subscribers to share information or promote a product or service. Let’s say you have a blog or a YouTube channel that’s all about yoga. In your newsletter, you can promote your favorite yoga wear using affiliate links. If your readers click on the link, it’s money in your pocket. You can also use your newsletter to promote your latest online yoga workshops, your one-on-one online yoga coaching sessions, and your comfy merch.

7. Create a Youtube channel

If you’ve always dreamed of being the next big YouTube star, now’s your chance. To make money on YouTube you need views and subscribers—lots of them. To qualify for the YouTube Partner Program, you need at least 1,000 subscribers with 4,000 public watch hours over the last 12 months or 1,000 subscribers with 10 million public short video views over the last 90 days. If you can meet these criteria, it’s possible to earn money. Using your YouTube Channel, you can try to profit from advertising revenue, channel membership, and selling merchandise in your YouTube store.

8. Write an ebook

Have you been sitting on a book idea for years? If so, why not try to self-publish and sell an ebook online? From financial advice and self-help to cookbooks and fiction, there is no end to what you can write about. If you have expertise on a subject and want to share your knowledge, an ebook is a great way to get the word out. There are many online ebook publishers, including Amazon Kindle, Smashwords, and Rakuten Kobo. Writing a book isn’t easy, and it takes a significant amount of effort on the front end. But once you hit publish, your ebook has passive-income potential.

9. Voice-over acting

For those with a beautiful, unique, or radio-announcer tone, have you considered voice-over work? Successful voice-over actors often have a background in acting (though it’s not necessary) and are able to do different characters or accents. Voice-over actors can find work narrating ebooks, online videos, or online ads. To get started, you will need a professional portfolio to share with potential clients. Voice-over acting also requires some initial investment. You’ll need to purchase a microphone and headphones, as well as voice recording and editing software.

10. Become a virtual assistant

A virtual assistant is a remote worker who offers administrative support to different clients. Successful virtual assistants are organized, reliable, and tech-savvy. The exact job tasks you will do as a virtual assistant can vary greatly based on your skill set as well as what your client wants. Some services you might offer include: responding to emails, scheduling client meetings and appointments, transcribing documents, and coordinating travel or bookkeeping. If you already have administrative experience, this can make it easier to break into the industry, but it's not necessary. You can start to look for clients using platforms like Belay, Upwork, and Zirtual.

11. Twitch streaming

Twitch lets gamers and other creators stream their content live. Similar to a YouTube channel, you make money by becoming a Twitch Partner or a Twitch Affiliate . There are several ways to monetize your content on Twitch, including subscriptions and “Bits.” Subscriptions (subs) allow your viewers to pay a monthly fee to support your channel. “Bits” are a virtual good that viewers can purchase to show their support and cheer on your content. As a Twitch Partner, you can also run ads on your streams and make money through sponsorship opportunities.

12. Test websites & apps

If you like being paid to take surveys, you might also enjoy earning money or rewards to test websites and apps. Instead of answering questions about specific products, you get to use websites and apps and provide your feedback. Similar to taking surveys, you aren’t going to earn enough to replace your full-time job. But it is a fun way to get paid for your perspective. If you’re interested, you can check out sites like UserTesting, UserPeek, and Userlytics. In addition to your computer, you will often need a microphone to participate.

13. Sell used items

Is your garage or hallway closet overflowing with stuff? Maybe it’s time to part with some of your old coats, toys, or kitchen appliances. Doing so not only frees up space in your household. It can also earn you extra money. With online sites like Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, and Craigslist, you can reach a wide audience of people perhaps interested in buying your unwanted items. It might not even be necessary to mail the stuff you sell. If you sign up on a local website, you can agree to meet the buyer in person.

14. Host on Airbnb

If you have a spare room or home, you can consider listing it on Airbnb. Decide whether you want to rent your space full-time, part-time, or just when you’re away traveling. While renting your space on Airbnb is considered a passive form of income , there is work involved. First, you need to ensure your space is ready to rent. This might include sprucing it up with new sheets, towels, and maybe a fresh coat of paint. There’s also the task of cleaning the space after guests leave. You can do this yourself or pay a cleaner. To get started, you need to sign up as a host with Airbnb and post your listing. While signing up is free, Airbnb will collect a percentage of your nightly rate. Prior to posting, it’s a good idea to confirm you’re allowed to rent your space. If you are part of a homeowners association, there might be rules against it.

15. Freelance writing

To become a freelance writer, you need to be a good writer, a strong researcher, and possess good organizational and time management skills. You don’t need a degree in journalism or English literature, though it doesn’t hurt. To start making money, you should have a portfolio with a few writing samples to share with potential clients. You can create a free writing portfolio on sites such as Contently and Muck Rack. To find clients, you can use online job boards. Three options: Upwork, Fiverr, and ProBlogger. However, there’s a lot of competition on these sites and the pay is often low. Once you have some experience, you can start to pitch clients on your own and increase your rates accordingly.

16. Dropshipping

Dropshipping allows you to sell a product online without having to keep stock. Using a drop shipping app, your customers can buy products from your online store that then ship directly from your supplier to your customer. To make money, you charge a slightly higher fee than your supplier and keep the profit. Before diving into the world of dropshipping, make sure you carefully research the product you want to sell and the wholesaler from which you plan to buy. To stay competitive, compare prices set by other buyers to determine what you should charge. There are a number of fraud issues around dropshipping , so proceed with caution.

17. Print on Demand

Print-on-demand (POD) lets you add your own designs to white-label products supplied by a third party on a per-order basis. Popular POD items include t-shirts, coffee mugs, tote bags, and socks. A benefit of POD is it eliminates the need to stock inventory, as everything is handled by the printing company. Many POD websites make it easy to set up your store and select products that you want to add your designs to. These companies will also print your designs and ship the products. To create your designs, you can use websites like Canva or you can hire someone else to create designs using sites like Fiverr or Upwork. To make money, you purchase your custom product for one price (let’s say $10), sell it for a markup ($22), and keep the profit.

You can set your own hours or come and go as you please but they do limit how many tasks you can do in a period.

Pay is varied depending on the task and the length of work.

Some pay 2¢ a task that’s done quickly to $1 or more for the longer ones.

Some have earned a full-time income on mTurk, but the average is $50 – $100 a week, depending on the amount of work you do.

This is different from your typical task listing sites, on Fiverr you create gigs to offer to other people.  People sell everything from writing services, design services, voice over services, to making phone calls, and videos and so much more.

It’s called Fiverr because these gigs are sold for $5 each. Doesn’t sound like much money does it? But with each gig you can add “extras” for an additional fee. Some people actually have made a full-time living off of Fiverr .

4. ClickWorker

Get paid on Clickworker for writing, translating, researching and collecting data, and other tasks. The types of tasks that are available is based on your qualifications. Qualifications are determined by assessments given during the registration process and on previously completed work.

5. OneSpace

Another quick task site doing surveys, copywriting, quality assurance, foreign language transcription and more. If you pass qualifying tests you can work on higher paying tasks.

This site pays you daily after approving your completed work. Pay is usually not more than 10¢ each task, but for writing tasks the pay is about  2¢ to 3.5¢ a word.

6. Fancy Hands

Fancy Hands is more of a virtual assistant portal and you can work on any device on your own schedule to assist people with two types of tasks – standard and live.

Standard tasks are those posted that need to be answered within 24 hours (earlier is best), and live tasks are where you’re connected to a client right away through SMS text or web chat.

Each task usually only takes 20 minutes but some can be longer. Simple things such as making appointments, researching quotes, making a trip itinerary, and other similar work. Tasks are worth anywhere from $3.00 to $7.00 per task

The jobs on this site aren’t exactly short tasks. But you can work as a transcriber, translator, or captioner. You can create your own schedule, work anytime, and pick your projects.

The pay range for translators is 5¢ to 7¢ per word. For transcribers, it’s.40¢ to 65¢ per audio minute, and for closed captioners, it’s 40¢ to 75¢ per audio minute. Deposits are made to your PayPal account weekly.

8. User Testing

This is a different type of task site where your job is to test various websites. You work on their platform and surf a client’s website and see how well you can navigate around. You’ll need a PC or a Mac and a working microphone for this job.

Website testers get paid $10 for each completed test. A test consists of a 20-minute recording and answers to four follow-up written questions.

9. Rapid Worker

This site is geared towards students to earn money doing quick online tasks. The online tasks include: voting on YouTube, following someone on social media, posting reviews, blogging about a client’s product, signing up for online games, creating emails, and many more.

You get paid when the client marks the completed task as “satisfied”, otherwise you won’t get paid. Payment depends on the task but usually is about $1 – $3 per hour. Payments are made 8 days after you request a withdrawal.

10. Click ‘n Work

This is a global company that has online tasks in data entry, research, interviewing and other professional related jobs. These are more stringent and top professional work tasks so you do have to pass specific qualifying tests to be accepted for certain tasks though.

Pay depends on the clients offers but two factors affect the rate – the more skilled and experienced needed the higher the pay, and the urgency to complete the task. You send Click ‘N Work your invoice at the end of the month and they calculate the rest and the funds are either deposited into your bank account or by check.

Instead of doing tasks on this website, you earn money by giving advice through chat, phone or by answering questions that have been posted online. Questions relating to cars and trucks, cell phones, appliances, clothing, art and media, social media, and pretty much anything out there.

You work your way up several “levels” and earn points as well and your advice has to be “liked” in order to get paid. Pay is between $2 and $10 depending on the mode through which the questions are answered.

13. GigBucks

This site is similar to Fiverr where you offer gigs as a tech-savvy or creative person. Gigs such as digital marketing, programming, singing, music gigs, translation, SEO marketing and other professional jobs.

The only task offered on Humanatic is reviewing and sorting phone calls. You can review calls at anytime on your own schedule, but the amount of calls available to review depend on the time of day, their largest volume of calls is between 7 am – 7 pm Eastern time.

The pay varies depends on your skill level and what type of phone call was reviewed. You can make anywhere from $1 to $4.50 an hour and payment are to your PayPal once you accumulate $10.

16. Micro Workers

There’s a huge variety of tasks offered on this site, anything from surveys, data mining, content moderation, data annotation, categorization, and research among others.

You do need to keep up a certain “success rate” in order to continue working here. You can climb different levels to earn more, but the average admitted by current workers is about $5 – $7 an hour. Payments are sent twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays.

17. OneSpace

CrowdSpace is slowly becoming OneSpace, the work you’ll find on OneSpace are similar to those posted at Amazon Mturk but offer more tasks, like transcription, image tagging, web categorization, accounting and more business and professional tasks.

The pay is the same as on CrowdSpace – about 10¢ each with writing being between 2¢ a word to 3.5¢ a word.

18. Figure Eight

Lastly, this site is formerly known as CrowdFlower, Figure Eight offers tasks such as categorizing social media, moderate content, transcribe audio, and more.

The pay on this site averages between $2- $3 per hour, but the more skilled you are, the more tasks you can accomplish and it’s possible to earn $500 a month.

It’s possible to join several sites and designate some time to each one for more earning opportunities in tasks you prefer to work on. As some of these sites mentioned, it’s possible to make full-time earnings but the reality is a lot less. They’re still good for making some extra money in your spare time though.

20 ways to make money online in 2024

Whether you’re trying to make money on the side, moonlighting on evenings and weekends, or just want to work remotely — there are plenty of things you can try.

The best way to go about earning money online is to start by experimenting with as many suitable options as you can. You’ll want to pick a few with the highest potential, and then finally settle on one or two that you can turn into sustainable businesses down the road.

Where do you start? Here are the top 20 money-making ideas for 2024.

Monetize your expertise

Why not use the knowledge, skills, or expertise you’ve honed over the years and put it to good use? You can make legitimate money by either offering your skills as a service for others, or sharing what you know to turn your passion into profits.

1. Start freelancing

Almost any creative office job (including data entry, writing, design, and coding) can be turned into a freelance gig, or even a career.  In fact, most big companies use freelancers to outsource non-core functions (e.g. bookkeeping or customer service) or quickly scale their operations (e.g. hiring remote sales representatives).

A quick way to start freelancing is to sign up for a freelancing platform (like Fiverr or Upwork). But an even better way to start is to reach out to your ideal clients directly and present your services in a compelling way.

  • Time to get started : Immediately. You can pick up a project today, even if you don’t have a professional network.
  • Effort : Starting is quick, but you only make money while you work. To scale, you might be able to hire others and create an agency later on.
  • Payoff : As a rule, aim for twice your in-house hourly rate . On the higher end, freelance jobs can pay tens of thousands of dollars for a single project.

2. Create an online course

Unlike freelancing, online courses are digital products that require some upfront preparation but are infinitely scalable . You can create a course once and sell it a thousand times, as long as you promote it online.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? You just need a few tools to get started.

Thinkific is a comprehensive and intuitive e-learning platform for educators, content creators and entrepreneurs. You can easily create a beautiful online course in just a few hours using Thinkific’s drag-and-drop interface and professionally designed templates. The platform also features built-in marketing and sales tools. The best thing about Thinkific is that you can build a successful course from start to finish without any design or programming skills.

  • Time to get started : If you’re already an expert in your field (and have some knowledge to share), building an online course on Thinkific will take you anywhere between a few hours and a few days.
  • Effort : You need to spend time upfront researching, writing, and structuring your course. Luckily, you only have to do it once.
  • Payoff : Multiples of the price of your course. For example, if you price your course at $50, you’ll earn $50,000 if 1,000 customers sign up.

3. Become an online coach

Another way to leverage your domain expertise is to become a coach. The demand for coaching is growing rapidly. The International Coaching Federation estimates there are currently more than 70,000 coaches worldwide.

Some types of online coaching you can think about include:

  • Life coaching
  • Business coaching
  • Fitness coaching
  • Nutrition coaching

The key is being able to share your experience and knowledge to help others achieve their goals. Start by asking people in your network whether they would pay you for teaching them something you excel at.

  • Time to get started : Instant, as long as you have Zoom and WiFi.
  • Effort : Building a successful coaching practice takes some background work and a lot of expertise. Most clients tend to come through word of mouth, so you generally have to prove you’re a good coach before you can really scale.
  • Payoff : It’s best to become a coach when you can provide outstanding value to someone who’s earlier in their journey. Hence, compensation can range from $50 an hour to hundreds.

4. Work as an online tutor

If coaching sounds too vague to you, but you still have a skill you’d like to teach (e.g. math, French, guitar), you can easily do so online.  Start by looking up requests for tutors online and posting your profile on a few tutoring platforms. (And hey, if that doesn’t work, you could always go put up flyers on the poles in your neighborhood.)

Depending on the demand for your skills, your tutoring might be very occasional or occupy most of your day.

  • Time to get started : It might take a few days or weeks to get your first client.
  • Effort : Some proactive effort to get good clients is required, but it’ll get easier as information about your services spreads through word of mouth.
  • Payoff : Payment is usually immediate but your pricing power will be somewhat constrained by the market average.

complete tasks for money online

Monetize your time

Still working on building up your knowledge and skills? There are still plenty of other ways for you to make money online that don’t require you to be an expert. All you need is free time and an internet connection to take advantage of this next set of money-making opportunities.

5. Help out as a virtual assistant

There are more entrepreneurs today than ever, and most of them need to delegate administrative tasks to focus on their core business.  If you don’t mind scanning through emails, writing birthday wishes, filing expenses, managing social media, and answering the phone, being a virtual assistant might be a great answer to how to make extra money online .

Reach out to entrepreneurs and executives you like. Apply for virtual assistant jobs on various online platforms. There’s definitely more demand than supply here, so you can count on getting your first job pretty quickly.

  • Time to get started : A few days or weeks to find the right gig.
  • Effort : You might want to read up on how existing virtual assistants organize their workflows and write down some tips to be more efficient. (For inspiration, take a look at how executives hire a virtual assistant .)
  • Payoff : Anywhere from $20 to $60 an hour (or even more for top-rated virtual assistants).

6. Take online surveys for cash

If you need money right now, and you don’t want to be burdened with long-term contracts, completing a few online surveys might be the perfect choice.

While taking surveys isn’t necessarily the foundation for a long-term career, it’s a great way to make a few hundred dollars on top of your regular job. And it doesn’t require any specific skills or other responsibilities. (Or, too much of your brain power!)

Start by checking online survey platforms like Survey Junkie , create your profile, and get matched with various surveys. That’s it!

  • Time to get started : Just a few minutes.
  • Effort : Zero effort required to start. Surveys themselves usually take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.
  • Payoff : Individual surveys don’t pay too much, usually no more than $20. Sometimes, you can take surveys for Amazon or Starbucks gift cards as well.

7. Try user testing websites and apps

When companies make products, especially digital ones, they want to ensure they understand their target audience. Hence, they frequently test their apps and websites for usability with small focus groups prior to launch.

Usually, all you need to do is to complete a few tasks while being recorded on video or observed by a UX designer.

  • Time to get started : Just register on a platform like UserTesting , and you’re good to go.
  • Effort : Competition is high, so you need to be quick when a new project is announced.
  • Payoff : Reviews can pay around $5 to $10, but you can complete a few in an hour.

8. Transcribe voice recordings

Every company that does discovery sessions (e.g. digital agencies) records client meetings and needs them transcribed for later use (e.g. brainstorming advertising campaigns). Podcasting is also a growing industry in need of transcription services.

So, if you’re a fast typer and your grammar and proofreading skills are above average, you can make good money just typing away at home. Check out a platform like Rev to see how easy it is to get started.

  • Time to get started : It’s a good idea to practice transcribing short audio clips and build an efficient workflow before you apply for gigs. Deadlines are often very tight!
  • Effort : Even though typing doesn’t seem exhausting, don’t count on being able to type at the same speed for eight hours every day.
  • Payoff : Expect to get around $1.5 to $3 per minute of audio transcribed.

9. Complete micro-tasks

Some people don’t have a lot of free time to devote to projects and would rather complete micro-tasks when they have a minute here and there. That’s when Amazon’s Mechanical Turk can be a good match.

The Mechanical Turk forum posts small tasks (e.g. classifying receipts or tagging images) that can take as little as a few minutes to do. Each task has a price, so you can choose whether you want to take it on or not.

  • Time to get started : It can take a few days to get approved.
  • Effort : The work might seem tedious, but you get full autonomy to decide which tasks you want to do.
  • Payoff : You’re paid per task after your work has been checked.

10. Narrate audiobooks

Do you have a pleasant voice and love reading aloud? You can turn it into a side gig and try to narrate online articles, commercials, and even audiobooks.

Now a fair warning: Narrating is not for everyone. You need to be able to have full command of your voice. A background in acting would help too. Starting a podcast might be a good idea, as a way to practice.

The industry is also close-knit, so breaking into it requires active networking on your part as well as multiple auditions.

  • Time to get started : Significant. Might take a month or more to secure your first project.
  • Effort : Narrating is not easy. But depending on your day job, it can feel like a true getaway.
  • Payoff : Depends on the project but, on average, narrators get paid wages comparable to other skilled creative professionals.

Monetize physical and digital products

The internet isn’t all zeros and ones — you can also make money by selling actual products online. Both physical and digital products can be huge money-makers, as long as you have the time to invest in creating, marketing, and selling.

11. Write and sell an eBook

If you’re good at writing, you can create a scalable side business by selling books on topics people care about.  You might know solutions to some common problems from your professional life, or you can do some research. Then you can aggregate all the available knowledge and package it in a book format.

No printing press or graphic designers are needed — just sell your ebook on Amazon or on your own website. Continue writing books on specific topics and you’ll find your “book portfolio” could earn you a sizeable income in a year or so.

  • Time to get started : Significant. Even short eBooks require dozens of hours to write.
  • Effort : After you invest a lot of effort upfront, you’ll need to support the launch of the book with some marketing and sales efforts.
  • Payoff : Selling books is not a fast way to make money. But as you write more books, sales will start to compound.

12. Build a web or mobile app

Those who are interested in coding and fascinated by startups might think about building an app that solves some problem. The more important the problem, the more popular your app will become. Although knowing how to code is beneficial, it’s not strictly necessary — you can put together a useful app with no-code tools to test your idea first.

  • Time to get started : Learning the basics of coding will take at least a few months. But in reality, the industry changes so quickly that learning never ends.
  • Effort : If your app becomes popular, you’ll need to set aside quite a bit of time for new features, fixing bugs, and customer support.
  • Payoff : Apps, and especially subscriptions, are very scalable . It’s not unusual for successful indie developers to make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year.

13. Trade domain names

The best time to get into the domain names trade was in the 1990s. The second best time might be now.

As branding gets more and more important, owning good domain names becomes more valuable as well. Domain names with high potential for organic search traffic can in fact start profitable businesses .

  • Time to get started : Spend a week or so learning SEO tools required to monitor traffic flows on the web.
  • Effort : Low effort once you get started. Good domain names only become available once in a while.
  • Payoff : You can make thousands of dollars selling a single domain name, but the income is highly inconsistent and largely out of your control.

14. Sell crafts on Etsy

If you enjoy making something with your hands (e.g. leather or ceramic goods), you can turn it into a small business by selling your work online.

Etsy is the easiest platform to start on. Just create your own store there for free and post new products as you make them. Who knows, maybe it will turn into a full-blown business over time!

  • Time to get started : You can start an Etsy store in less than an hour.
  • Effort : Depending on your volume, you’ll need to ship products, provide some customer service, etc.
  • Payoff : Likely not a huge money-making opportunity right off the bat, but it should cover the input costs of your craft (e.g. paints, leather, fabric) and your labor. As you grow and find ways to scale production, you can expect to bring in a higher income.

15. Monetize your photography

Another popular hobby that can make you some extra cash is photography.  Nearly all marketing materials used by companies, whether online or not, require imagery. So there are plenty of stock photo platforms looking for new images all the time.

Go through your photo library and highlight the images you think can be used by others. That’s all you need to get your foot in the door in the photo business.

  • Time to get started : Immediate. You can post your photo archive to a stock photo website today.
  • Effort : You can invest as much time as you’re comfortable with. Some photographers passively upload existing photos. Others specifically take images they think will be in demand.
  • Payoff : Inconsistent and supplementary to your main activities.

16. Go big on dropshipping and ecommerce

Some people are good at predicting which goods are going to be in demand in the near future.

So why not set up an online store selling something people are going to be looking for? You can sell your own products or rely on dropshipping platforms to deliver products for you, without you keeping unnecessary inventory.

  • Time to get started : Starting takes at least a few days to over a month, depending on what you’re selling and whether you need to register your online store as a business.
  • Effort : A dropshipping store is relatively easy to maintain, whereas a successful ecommerce website will quickly turn into your full-time job.
  • Payoff : Selling things people want is one of the fastest ways to make money. However, getting stuck with lots of inventory is a quick way to lose money as well.

Monetize your audience

A large following online isn’t just something you can brag about to your friends — it’s also a really effective way for you to make money online. You can monetize your audience in all sorts of different ways, depending on which channels you’re on and what tactics you’d like to take.

17. Use affiliate marketing on your blog

One of the best examples of how to make money online for free is including affiliate links on your blog .  For example, you can write a long blog post about a topic a lot of people are interested in. (A new camera review, for example.) Then include an affiliate link to Amazon at the end. Every time people buy the camera on Amazon from your link, you’ll get a cut.

  • Time to get started : You need to run a blog with thousands of visits every month. Getting to that point might require a year or so of consistent blogging.
  • Effort : Writing a good blog post takes time, but it’ll continue to perform for a few months after being posted, giving you passive income.
  • Payoff : Depending on the popularity of your blog and what you’re writing about, you can make anywhere from hundreds of dollars (for cheaper products, like books) to thousands of dollars (for more expensive products, like mattresses).

18. Get advertising revenue from YouTube

Having a successful YouTube channel today is like running a talk show 30 years ago. And Google will even pay you advertising revenue for views.

Vlogs, pranks, and how-to videos are especially popular nowadays and don’t require much investment. All you need to do is come up with an interesting concept and execute in a way that keeps people interested .

  • Time to get started : At least a few months to get enough views for sustainable income. (Unless you go viral overnight — but that takes a good dose of luck.)
  • Effort : Editing even a simple video is a significant time investment.
  • Payoff : The best YouTubers make millions. However, most make little to nothing at all.

19. Find sponsors for your Instagram account

Brands today like for their message to be spread organically. So they work with lots of micro-influencers (1,000+ followers) on Instagram.

If you have a following, you can monetize it by looking for partnerships and featuring products in your posts and Stories.  If your profile is known to be about a specific topic (e.g. skateboarding), then it’ll be easy for brands to identify.

  • Time to get started : Developing a successful Instagram profile will likely take a few months.
  • Effort : You need to maintain your visibility on social media and regularly post new content.
  • Payoff : Micro-influencers can expect to make somewhere in the low single thousands a month. (Although this can be very inconsistent, as well.)

20. Set up donations on Twitch

If you have a Twitch following and you want to know how to make fast money online — well, it’s donations!  You can monetize your streams this way quite easily, as long as you’re capturing the interest of your audience.

  • Time to get started : As with any other media channels, acquiring followers takes time — from months to years.
  • Effort : Streamers frequently spend hours being on camera online. If that sounds exhausting, it’s likely not for you.
  • Payoff : Most streamers make nothing. But once your channel becomes popular, you can make hundreds and even thousands of dollars per stream.

31 Best Short Task Sites to Make Extra Cash Fast (Pay per Task)

by Saeed - Verified & Updated June 1, 2021 (This post may contain affiliate links.)

You can make good money doing small gigs on these short tasks sites and apps...

It’s the gig economy!

We all like making extra money in our spare time , but most of us don’t want to get a second job (and you don’t have to ) to make extra money.

Sometimes, you just want a little extra cash without spending a lot of time working.

An extra $10 or $20 will do!

If that sounds like you, look no further.

In this post, we are going to share a big list of sites that you can use to do micro gigs and get paid decently.

None of these sites require any financial investment.

You don’t need any special qualifications or education.

Just make a profile and get going.

These are all legit sites that actually pay.

But before we get to sites that pay to complete offers and tasks…

What will I learn?

What are short task sites?

A good question before we begin is, “ How Do I Get Paid for These Simple Tasks? ”

It might seem a little counterintuitive. After all, if the tasks are so simple, why pay someone else to do them?

The deal is that a lot of these tasks are simple and tedious. But they are complicated enough that machines can’t be taught to do them. So the work is passed off to you, the internet worker.

Simple work for simple pay, but it still needs a human at the helm.

Advertisements

For a more concrete example, let’s say I have 1000 pictures from an event. I need these images sorted by content. But I don’t want to spend days going through every picture and looking at everything to figure out what’s in it, that’s tedious! I’d rather pay someone to do it for me.

So then that work is taken to one of the sites listed below, who will pay you in return for completing each picture (usually a very small sum, like a few cents.) But since there are hundreds of you all doing the sorting work, my pictures are sorted out in just a few hours.

That’s good for everybody!

And that explains the outstanding rise of the Gig Economy .

Sorting pictures is just one of many types of tasks you might end up doing on these sites.

The idea is that the work is easy, but it comes in a lot of varieties.

The type of tasks you’re doing will depend entirely on the day and on the site that you’re using. Some will certainly be easier than others, and that’s one of the great things about micro task sites.

EarnCrypto https://www.earncrypto.com/index.php

Wanna get paid in Bitcoin (or hundreds of other coins) instead of cash or gift cards?

You can earn cryptocurrencies by watching videos, taking surveys, playing games and more.

6. Earnably

Like most other short tasks sites, you earn points for watching videos, taking surveys, listening to radio and more.

This is an awesome task site for people who like instant rewards. That’s right, you can redeem your earning at any time.

What can you redeem your points for, you ask?

Gift cards, PayPal payments, Bitcoin, Steam Wallet and more.

7. Zoombucks

Kicking off the list is ZoomBucks, one of the quintessential micro task sites.

While they’re not as popular as ‘The King,’ Swagbucks , they still pull a very respectable amount of traffic.

You can do all the usual micro tasks here. Things like taking surveys, playing games, watching videos, doing little tasks and checking out offers.

While ZoomBucks doesn’t break the mold, it is very reliable and easy to use.

8. User Testing

This is one of the best sites that pay you to test websites.

You’ll be asked to record yourself (using screen-capture) on a website, speaking about your experience as you go.

If you make a 10-20 minute video, you’ll get paid $10 (or $15 for a mobile test.)

9. TaskRabbit

TaskRabbit isn’t all-online, strictly speaking. Instead, it’s a hub to get tasks you can do around town.

While the website is online, you’ll almost definitely be mobilizing in real life to go do your task. It can be anything from fixing a sink, buying groceries, making a coffee run, or anything in-between.

A great option for more social people, especially if you live in a densely populated area.

10. Swagbucks

The aforementioned “King of Micro Tasks,” Swagbucks is a hugely popular site where people go to make money from a variety of activities.

They have a point system much like many sites do, but no payment schedule. Simply redeem the points whenever you have enough.

There’s a lot of stuff you can do on this site. Games, shopping, videos, searching the web– you name it.

Swagbucks also has a very popular mobile app so you can earn on the go.

11. ShortTask

A site for task-tasks that will probably require a little bit more time and attention.

You can choose between design, research, writing or data entry.

The great thing is that you get better pay here in return for contributing your skills to these group tasks, so you will be more engaged and better compensated than other sites.

The downside is that it has less ‘stop and go’ freedom.

12. Shopkick

This is a smartphone-dependent task service.

Basically, you earn points for going to stores.

The GPS on your phone coordinates with the app itself, you get compensated, and it’s that simple.

There are a ton of participating companies: Old Navy, Target, Best Buy, Macy’s, Mobil, just to name a few.

Not only do you get points just for walking in, but you can also make points for scanning barcodes and making purchases.

13. Skyword

A twice-monthly paying writing service. Great for beginning writers.

You make $10 per article and a small percent of the traffic revenue (ad revenue.)

It’s not going to stuff your wallet, but it’s actually a pretty good way for a writer to get some experience.

14. Points2Shop

While this site has a shopping and rewards focus, you can still get paid for doing things like watching ads and taking surveys.

It’s a good, but if not ‘standard’ micro task site.

15. RapidWorkers

A site for marketing-focused micro tasks, the goal of RapidWorkers is to help people grow their site’s presence.

You might be asked to do things like social media actions, following or liking or tweeting, and you can get paid out immediately to PayPal as soon as you make $4.

Users of Microworkers may notice that the layout is similar. Indeed, RapidWorkers’ interface was completely copied from MicroWorkers!

NeoBux is practically the definition of a micro task site. It’s all about ads, so you click through ads of various types and make a few cents every time.

The pay is micro-sized, as are the tasks.

A great mindless way to rack up some money when you’re not looking to get too deep into anything.

17. MiniJobz

Similar to the functions of RapidWorkers, MiniJobz is primarily focused on social media actions as their micro-tasks.

Important to note is that they do not pay via PayPal, but rather MoneyBookers or Payza.

You can cash out at $5.

This is an alternative to Amazon mTurk that is available internationally and pays out to PayPal and Payza.

The payment is low-key for easy work, but you will have less competition than on mTurk (no more having a job expire before you can accept it.)

The downside is that since it isn’t as big a site, you won’t see as many tasks here.

19. InboxDollars

Another very solid micro task site.

You have the usual options, surveys, games, web searching, shopping.

There are certain companies which pay a lot of money out to InboxDollars, so you may see a lot of their ads on the site.

One of the definite ‘must-try’ sites, it’s rather popular in micro task circles.

20. GigWalk

GigWalk is an app-based, real world micro-task workforce.

It is the sort of service where you can get paid for doing small, on-the-street tasks. That could be anything from snapping a picture of a geographic landmark or scanning a street sign with your phone.

Like TaskRabbit, GigWalk is only available in certain cities, sorry to the rural readers out there!

21. FusionCash

FusionCash is another platform similar to InboxDollars or SwagBucks that allows you to make money doing short, simple online tasks.

They offer $5 just for signing up, and after that, you can make anywhere from 25¢ to $30 per offer, which is paid out to PayPal. They also offer options to cash out via direct deposit or check, which is a deal-maker for some.

This is a BBB-certified business, so you don’t need to be concerned about scams.

Even still, if you’re nervous about using your credit card, you can always avoid the options that require it. They’re marked with a “CC.”

A site that has really been making waves in the online money making world.

Fiverr isn’t strictly a micro task site since it requires that you self-start a bit. Like Gig Bull, you put up a service and set your price, with the base price being $5.

You can then try to get people to buy more expensive services.

I’ve written about Fiverr before , so I won’t get too into it here. There are a lot of ways to go about succeeding with Fiverr, though.

Make sure you are selling a task that you can pull off frequently and (relatively) easily.

23. Field Agent

FA is an app-based service that wants you to do little tasks around town like checking price, checking shelves, or taking pictures of products.

Each task pays between $3 and $12 which is paid out to PayPal.

Unfortunately, this service is only available to iPhone users, so Android users won’t be able to get in on the action.

24. EasyShift

EasyShift is kind of like Field Agent, except you take on the work in ‘shifts.’ That means that you take on a variety of tasks at once and attend to all of them while you’re out and about.

It takes 48 hours to verify, but then you’ll be credited and able to pay out to PayPal.

The nice thing is that this is available to users of iPhones and Android devices, so all smartphone users can do shifts while they’re out.

25. Click N Work

A data entry/micro-task focused site that allows people to work from around the world.

These guys are going to be asking you to do web-specific work, so there won’t be any leaving the house as with some of the previous entries.

The payment can fluctuate quite a bit by task, so make sure you seize on the best-paying jobs when you can.

26. Crowdtap

The first thing you’ll notice about Crowdtap is that you are asked to link your Facebook account to it.

This is good if you were looking to avoid making your own sign-in.

Since Crowdtap is a US-based company, you’ll need to live in the States to take advantage of this service.

Crowdtap will ask you to do tasks like EasyShifts or Field Agent, product research and feedback types of things.

Of course, you’ll also need a smartphone to get started.

27. CrowdSource

The first thing to say about CrowdSource is that they’re a well-trusted company.

When you go to do work for them, you’ll likely be routed through Amazon mTurk, which means you need to live in the US.

They offer above-minimum wage payment for writers and editors.

Another thing to say about CrowdSource is that their entrance tests are *tough.*

I had tried to apply here to test it out a little while back, and I wasn’t able to clear through their examinations. They are looking for you to follow the style guide to a T.

28. ClickWorker

One of the up-and-coming microtask platforms that seeks to dethrone mTurk, Clickworker is based in Germany (though it does have an English section of the site.)

You’ll need to give them some real information to get started, tax information and the like, as well as passing some entrance tests.

After that, you’ll get access to their microtasks as well as the ability to sign up for the UHRS program, which is by far the best pay available through ClickWorker (though several other sites also use UHRS.)

29. Amazon Mechanical Turk (mTurk)

If Swagbucks is the “king of micro tasks”, then it might be right to call mTurk “the queen”.

More realistically, the truth is that mTurk is a more serious, more demanding online work platform that is aimed towards more committed workers.

Companies come to mTurk to get US citizens to do their micro-tasks for them.

You can find very high-paying work on the site. I myself have done hour-long transcriptions that paid upwards of ~$40 (though they took much longer than an hour to do.)

You can make a pretty fair amount of money on mTurk, but it will require honing some skills first.

The tasks can be very difficult when you start out, compared to the pay.

30. Appen (Appen Butler Hill)

Finishing off the list is Appen, one of the well-known international ‘language solutions’ and translations companies that hire people to work from home .

While they are looking for translators and other types of bilingual users, there are sometimes microtasks available for those who are capable of committing to a full translation at the moment.

The pay is small, but the tasks tend not to be very difficult compared to micro tasks from other services.

31. Keep Rewarding

Don’t want to run out of paid tasks?

This is the site for you!

You get paid for shopping online, clicking on ads, filling out surveys, watching videos and much more.

It is one of the few international rewards sites meaning you can use to make extra money from anywhere in the world.

How do you get paid?

Payment is generally on the low end, with the expectation that you will be doing a lot of work and adding up all your earnings.

It will usually be a few cents a job though on certain occasions you may find yourself making as much as a few dollars a job (these are usually longer per-task, though.)

Pay schedules are entirely dependent on the site itself.

First, most sites have a ‘ payout minimum ,’ or a set amount of money you need to earn before you’ll be compensated.

In addition to this, a lot of sites have their own payment schedule. While some sites will let you cash out whenever you reach the minimum, others will auto-cash out at a certain time as long as you have the minimum amount necessary.

You’ll almost definitely be making more money over time than you will initially.

Doing these tasks is a skill that you’ll get better at with time, so it’s only natural that your rate of pay will go up.

These sites were part of the original post but they no longer work. Keeping them here for archival reasons.

MobileWorks

MobileWorks.com, not to be confused with MobileWorks.org, is a subunit of the ‘Lead Genius’ company, and they specialize in Lead Generation.

While that’s a fancy name, it refers to a similar type of data hunt and entry that you could end up doing on other sites. A very formal service for doing micro tasks.

Gig Coin is something like a mini-oDesk. You bid for jobs like a freelance website, and the tasks might be anything from designing a logo to writing a blog post.

You get paid in cash that goes to PayPal with a cashout minimum of $5 (the great news about that is that Gig Coin covers the transfer fees instead of charging you.)

If you want to bid on the go, you can even download their app from the app store (iOS only.)

This is an interesting site that lets you sell your services (whatever those are) in certain increments. It brings to mind an immediate comparison of Fiverr. The difference here is there are many static increments: $3, $5, $6, $9, $12, $15, $27, $45, or $90.

The increment system that GigBull uses is, in some ways, superior to the Fiverr system.

Since the site has its own function for setting a $90, it isn’t as difficult to advertise a higher-priced service on this site!

Click Chores

Another mTurk-like site that benefits from the fact that it is internationally available, Click Chores is a great option for those living outside the U.S. that are looking to make money with microtasks.

Agent Anything

Agent Anything is another out-and-about task service where you bid on the ability to do simple tasks like laundry and coffee runs.

Strangely, they ask that you be a college student to sign up, so that may limit your qualifications.

This company was actually acquired by CrowdSource a while ago and it has since merged with CrowdSource.

Writers can check here for work if they’re willing to pump out content.

CloudCrowd offers three varieties of writing-based work: ‘General’ writing, ‘Marketing’ writing, and editing. Payment is made via PayPal same-day as you turn it in.

Scam warning

Unfortunately, there are a lot of scam sites out there as well that try to mimic legit sites in order to take money from you.

One of them seems to be 1 Dollar Tasks. Every review I read of that site, points to it being a scam. Stay away from it and any other site like that.

Make sure you do your research before joining any site.

If you’re not sure about a site, ask. You can ask us here by leaving a comment, or even use forums like Reddit to ask other people who may have experience with such sites.

Is getting paid for completing short tasks even worth it?

I would definitely say yes.

These sites offer  good ways to make extra pocket change .

Sure, you won’t make a living, but every little bit helps. So it’s not a waste of time. It just isn’t good enough pay to quit your day job, that’s all.

I really like micro task sites and I’m glad that they exist.

In my opinion, the best way to use these sites is to make them a passive part of your day. Maybe you use Field Agent when you go downtown to get food, or you get on ClickWorker while you’re waiting for your pizza to get cooked. Integrating the services into your routine makes them seem less difficult and strenuous.

If you’re someone who wants to add a little extra cash to their budget, check out these short task sites and start earning some extra money completing easy gigs.

I signed up for Swagbucks and InboxDollars, recently. One of them gave my number to 3rd parties, despite saying they would not. Now my phone is blowing up with calls from all these education, insurance, and pyramid scheme offers. So annoying. I cancelled both accounts, since I’m not sure which one screwed me over.

complete tasks for money online

I am sorry about your trouble, Nikki.

I have been a member of both sites for years and they have never done that. Are you sure you didn’t complete any of those education related offers? Normally those offers require you to give them your contact info so they can contact you about their college courses and so on. So if you did do those offers, you gave them permission to contact you. If you didn’t, then yeah that’s just not right for them to contact you.

Did you try contacting SwagBucks and InboxDollars?

I’m actually shocked that you describe Swagbucks as the king of micro tasks. While the site isn’t bad it definitely would not be one that I would describe as the king! I have joined many of the sites on your list an many that you don’t have listed and of all of them the one I would say is with out a doubt the king is instagc They have so many more ways to earn cash than Swagbucks does, offers, clicks, surveys, downloads, etc. They also are partnered with Crowdflower which is a great task site that pays very well with the potential to earn a ton of cash especially if you’re a level 3 which is their highest badge. They offer the best ways to redeem your cash with the highest amount of gift cards that you can redeem your points for out of any site that i’ve seen along with direct deposit, e-check, and paypal. Minimum cashout amount for paypal is $1 and e-check and direct deposit are $5. Another great thing about this site that sets it far apart from Swagbucks is that when you redeem your points for gift cards you have instant access to them. No waiting a few days like with Swagbucks or a lot of other sites. Paypal is also instant as long as your redemption is $25 or less. Anything over $25 can take 1-3 days but in my experience most times it’s only a few hours. I have made so much money with this site that I don’t need to have a job. My average daily earnings is usually $25 but I have days where I make a lot more. Just yesterday I made $50 in only a few hours just from doing a few surveys and doing jobs on Crowdflower. If you’re looking for a great site like many of the ones listed here where you can actually make a lot of cash and can get instant access to it definitely check out the link and sign up! Once you try this site you definitely will agree that it out ranks all the others on this list especially Swagbucks which I would rate at the bottom of my list.

complete tasks for money online

Please update your list. Shorttask.com has been deemed a scam because they do not pay their members.

Lori, thanks for the heads up. I know they pay a lot less than other task sites and some of their tasks are questionable, but had never heard of this. Is this something that happened to you or somebody else who hasn’t gotten paid from them? I just want to make sure I see some evidence before I declare the site a scam.

Your questions answered

  • Is Toloka legit? Toloka is a crowdsourcing platform that helps process large amounts of data by distributing tasks to a large number of people who do small tasks. Client companies, or requesters, create tasks on the Toloka platform and set the reward for them, while Tolokers choose tasks, complete them and earn money online. The task is paid when it’s completed correctly.
  • What are these online tasks all about? You can help classify images, transcribe audio recordings, moderate comments, complete focus group surveys, and so on. The resulting data can be used for training machine learning algorithms, research, or other purposes.
  • Will I make real money online? Yes, you get paid in US dollars for completing online tasks. To withdraw money, you need to choose one of the withdrawal methods and register in the payment system. Don't try to withdraw money until you are sure that your account has been confirmed in the payment system.
  • Can I make more than $100 a month? The amount of the reward will vary depending on task complexity, the skill level, and availability of tasks in the Toloker’s region. However, it is possible to make more than $100 extra cash monthly.
  • Can I start making money online in Toloka right now? You can create an account on Toloka right now by visiting the  Get started  page. After filling in your personal profile, you can start finding your way around and taking the first training tasks and earning money online. However, keep in mind that it’s better to complete some training tasks to get access to the tasks with higher rewards.
  • Can I earn money in Toloka without a full-time job? In Toloka you do not commit to any fixed hours or minimum time spent on the platform. Some Tolokers do tasks for as much or as little as 30 mins daily. You get paid for doing some tasks. However, you need to read the  user agreement  carefully.
  • Can I use my phone to earn money online? Sure, you can download a Toloka app to earn extra cash on the go. However, it is more convenient to complete some tasks on the larger screen of a desktop or laptop computer. You have a single account for the web version of the platform and for the mobile app, so either way, you get paid for doing tasks to a single account.
  • Do I need to pay to use the Toloka platform? We don’t charge you anything for doing tasks on your platform. However, the third-party payment platforms might charge a fee for withdrawing your earnings. Please read their terms and conditions carefully.
  • Provide accurate information about yourself during the registration process
  • Take training tasks and exams that help you to get new skills and gain access to new projects
  • Make sure you are careful and concentrate while performing tasks online
  • Do I need a diploma to earn money with Toloka? You need no formal education and you learn as you go. What is really necessary to be a successful Toloker and earn more money online, is to concentrate and be careful. Read the instructions carefully, complete training tasks and grow skills.

Earn extra cash by doing microtasks like comparing images or rating search results. You can do it from anywhere, whether you're on the go or relaxing at home.

3 ways to make money: No expertise or experience required

It’s possible to make money from home in Canada with nothing more than an Internet connection and a mobile device. Here are 3 ways to make money online from home in Canada — no expertise needed.

1. Sell collectibles

Kijiji, eBay and Facebook accounts are free, and you can use these marketplaces to sell collectibles. How well your collectibles sell depends on their overall condition, rarity and marketplace demand. You can also sell to fellow collectors through Facebook groups. Before listing, research the market (don’t just look at the asking price, but what similar items sold for). Covering shipping costs may expand your market, but know your costs to avoid losing money.

Age threshold. You must be at least 18 years old to create seller accounts on eBay and Facebook Marketplace. Kijiji allows users to post ads on their own once they’re at least 16 years old. With permission, you may sell collectibles if you don’t meet these age thresholds by posting items under the account of an adult you trust.

Setup. 24 hours.

Starting cost. It’s free to open accounts on eBay, Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace. Posting items for sale may cost money, depending on the platform and how many posts you create:

  • eBay. You can post up to 250 listings for free before eBay charges an insertion fee for additional ads. Insertion fees vary by product category.
  • Kijiji. Depending on the selling category, you can post five to 23 free service ads at a time. After that, expect to pay a flat-rate listing fee per additional ad.
  • Facebook Marketplace. There are no listing fees for posting items on Facebook Marketplace, though a fee is automatically deducted when an item sells.

How easy is it to start? Easy. All you need is an Internet connection and enough tech savvy to take photos of your wares and post them to online marketplaces.

  • You can create posts in online marketplaces in just a few minutes, but it may take days — even weeks — to sell an item, depending on its condition, price and overall demand for the product.
  • Expect some back and forth with potential buyers who want to haggle prices or arrange for shipping or pickup.

How fast you’re paid depends on the platform and how to opt to receive payment:

  • Electronic funds transfer.
  • Interac e-Transfer .
  • Wire transfer.

Keep yourself safe from scams and fraudulent activity by adhering to online marketplace safety guidelines. If meeting in person to complete a sale, meet in a public place. Alert friends and family to your whereabouts before you leave home or bring a trusted person with you.

Collectibles, a camera, and a seller’s account on Kijiji, Amazon Marketplace, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist or similar sites.

2. Recycle your clothes

Instead of collecting dust, your gently used garments could be turned into extra cash. Online consignment and resale companies like Poshmark and Vestiaire Collective and Depop are typically free to use. Just create an account, and send in or list your clothing. Each site works differently, but you’ll generally earn a commission on the items that sell.

Age threshold. 18 — although those as young as 13 may be able to sell on some consignment websites with the help of a parent or guardian.

Set up. It may take a day or two to create an account, identify clothing items you want to sell, and put together listings.

Starting cost. It’s often free to create an account and list items on online consignment and resale platforms.

How easy is it to start? Easy enough, though it may be time-consuming to sort and list clothing items, depending on how much you have to sell.

Once a listing is live, it typically needs little to no oversight. Depending on the item of clothing, it may take weeks, even months, for items to sell.

Expect for funds to be released after the item you’ve sold is delivered to the buyer. Payment options include:

Some consignment platforms have a social media component. To boost the visibility of your listings, you may need to spend some time promoting them on your platform of choice.

Brand name or vintage clothing in good condition, an Internet connection, the ability to ship clothing or bring it to a physical location, and patience (sometimes it takes a while for things to sell).

3. Offer a room on Airbnb or VRBO

Depending on the regulations in your area, you could offer a room in your home as a short-term rental on sites like Airbnb or VRBO. Airbnb takes a 3% fee from every booking, while VRBO takes 5% as commission and 3% for payment processing.  Listing a space involves uploading numerous photos of the property alongside a detailed description, and any house rules guests are expected to follow. When setting your rate, you’ll need to account for utility expenses, repairs, maintenance, cleaning, and insurance .

Age threshold. 18.

Set up. 1 – 2 hours to take photos of the space and create an online listing.

Starting cost. Little to nothing if you already own or have access to a property. You don’t need to own a property to list on Airbnb — tenants are permitted to list and host a property they rent on Airbnb’s platform but typically need permission from their landlord.

How easy is it to start? Easy — if you already own a property.

It depends on how often you rent out your space. Cleaning between guests may be time-consuming, depending on the size of the property, though you can contract this job out to a cleaning company.

Expect to receive payment one to seven business days after the first day your guests check in. Payment options include:

  • Prepaid Debit Mastercard.
  • Wire transfer .
  • Western Union.

Both Airbnb and VRBO offer host liability insurance, but you’re welcome to purchase additional vacation rental property insurance for added peace of mind. Some provinces, regions, towns or cities may require that you purchase a business license or special permit to rent out part of all of your property.

A room for short-term rental with enough time to maintain it and provide amenities. Proper licenses and insurance, as required.

6 ways to make money online with full-time work potential

Looking for a money-making method with big earning potential? These six side hustles could feasibly be done on a full-time basis.

1. Pick up freelance work

Upwork, Workmarket, Fiverr, Freelancer.ca, Indeed, LinkedIn and similar job sites list opportunities for freelance writers, editors, graphic designers, web designers, coders and other creatives with skills that can be performed online. Sites like these will generally ask you to create an account to browse listings and bid or apply for the freelance job you want.

Age threshold. At least 16 to 18 years old, depending on the freelancing platform.

Set up. A day or two. You’ll need to set up an online profile and may need to wait while your profile is verified.

Starting cost. It’s often free to create an account and respond to job postings.

How easy is it to start? Expertise in the skills or services offered is preferred. It may take time to set up your freelancing profile, depending on the type of work you pursue. Some clients like to see examples of your previous work, which means you may need to put together a sample portfolio before you can apply for gigs.

You may be able to get a gig the same day you sign up, but it often takes a few weeks to establish regular work. If you can get the work, you can put in as many hours as you’d like.

Expect to be paid two to five business days after completing a job. Some platforms have clearing periods for client-deposited funds that may extend the timeline for getting paid. Payment options include:

To freelance in Canada, you need a Social Insurance Number .

Most freelancer listing sites have a minimum age: Fiverr (13), Upwork (18), Workmarket (18), Freelancer.ca (16), and LinkedIn (16 to use the site and 18 to offer services for a job).

2. Become a dropshipper

Dropshipping is like print-on-demand, but instead of selling designs, you sell goods. However, you don’t physically stock anything. Instead, you partner with a reputable wholesaler to process and send orders. How much you can make as a dropshipper varies widely depending on your products, market, and marketing efforts. Profit margins are usually low, but if you focus on selling something unique, and partner with an established brand or distributor who sells quality products as advertised (rather than cheap imitations), you may find success. Popular dropshipping suppliers include AliExpress, Sprocket, Alibaba and Gelato, among others.

Age threshold. 18. Dropshipping often requires partnering with an e-commerce platform to process customer orders and payments. These platforms typically require merchants to be at least 18 years old.

Set up. Weeks. There are numerous decisions you’ll need to make about your wares, target demographics and selling channels before you can get started.

Starting cost. Initial costs can be high. Expect to spend a few hundred dollars on the low end — possibly thousands on the high end.

How easy is it to start? Challenging. The learning curve for this side hustle can be quite steep.

Expect to put in at least a few hours of work each week while your business gets off the ground. Once you’re up and running, you can sell goods for as long as you choose.

Numerous e-commerce sites pay merchants on a set schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, etc.), though you can often initiate one-time payments outside this schedule. The most common way to get paid for dropshipping is by electronic funds transfer.

Dropshipping can be highly competitive. Plus, having a third-party handle order fulfillment and shipping means there are components of the selling process you’ll have no control over, like supply chain mix-ups and shipping delays.

Online storefront, affiliations with reputable brand wholesalers/distributors and an online advertising budget .

3. Become a virtual assistant

Do you consider yourself a jack of all trades? Excel at multitasking? Do you get a special thrill out of helping others get organized and complete their to-do lists? The life of a virtual assistant might be right for you. By signing up on websites like Upwork, Virtual Assistant Canada and Virtual Gurus, you can earn money helping clients tackle a variety of tasks while setting your own hours and working from just about anywhere.

Age threshold. You typically must be at least 16 to 18 years old, depending on the platform.

Set up. A day or two. You’ll need to set up an online profile and in some cases, wait while your profile is verified.

Starting cost. It’s often free to create accounts on freelancing sites.

How easy is it to start? Setting up your online profile may only take an hour or two, but potential clients may want to schedule an interview before they agree to hire you. You may need to prove previous professional experience and post-secondary education. You may also be asked to pass various skill set tests.

It may take a week or two to find clients you click with. The number of hours you work will depend on the client.

Payments are typically rendered through electronic funds transfer or Paypal. How fast you’re paid depends on the platform. Some platforms let you request payment as soon as a job is complete. Others pay for logged hours on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis.

Set clear parameters with clients around established working hours and tasks you’re equipped to handle to avoid misrepresenting your availability and skill set.

Phone and computer/Internet access, be based in Canada, and be available during business hours.

4. Open up an Etsy store

If you enjoy crafting in your downtime, consider selling your creations on Etsy. There’s strong demand for handmade wares, and you can sell just about anything on Etsy, so long as it’s handmade or vintage.

Set up. You may be able to create an account in a matter of minutes, but putting together your Etsy storefront could take days — even weeks, depending on how many listings you want to create.

Starting cost . Opening an Etsy shop is free, but you’re responsible for all costs associated with creating or obtaining your wares.

How easy is it to start? Easy, given you know what you want to sell and have some practice making it. Your items may have better odds of selling if they’re of high-quality make and design.

Once your online store is set up, it may take some time before orders start to come in.

How fast you’re paid depends on how long it takes you to make a sale and the payment schedule you set up. Etsy sellers typically receive payment by electronic funds transfer.

Your customers can rate your wares and storefront based on their shopping experience and their overall satisfaction with what they’ve purchased. These ratings can have a big impact on the overall success of your Etsy endeavour.

Handmade or vintage items you’d like to sell and a mobile device with an Internet connection.

5. Become a translator

If you’re fluent in multiple languages — or studied a foreign language in post-secondary school — you may be able to cash in by doing translation work online. Sites like Upwork, Gengo, Pro Translating, LanguageLine Solutions and Languages Unlimited are often looking for interpreters and translators. Depending on the company you apply with, the work could be full-time, freelance or on a per-job basis.

Total time.

Age threshold. Typically 18.

Set up. One to two days. You’ll need to set up an online profile and in some cases, take qualification tests and have your profile verified.

Starting cost. It’s often free to create an account on translation platforms.

How easy is it to start? Easy, if you’re bilingual. Previous experience as a translator may not be necessary, but you must be fluent in at least two languages.

Expect to spend a couple of weeks establishing regular work.

Some platforms let you request payment as soon as a job is complete. Others pay contractors on a set schedule. Payment options typically include:

You may need to provide samples of your translation work, or pass a reading and writing proficiency test.

Bilingualism, an Internet connection, a computer and perhaps headphones or recording equipment.

6. Sell your artwork using print-on-demand sites

If you’re artistically inclined, print-on-demand sites are a way to put your designs on t-shirts, mugs, posters, smartphone cases and more without handling inventory or shipping yourself. Sites like RedBubble, Printful, Teehatch, Art of Where, Ottawa Custom Clothing, and Printify are just a few of the print-on-demand options available in Canada. When someone orders your product, the site facilitates printing, payment processing and shipping. As the artist, you’ll receive a portion of the profit each time you sell an item.

Age threshold. At least 18 for many print-on-demand sites — although Redbubble allows users 16 and older to sell their art.

Set up. 1 – 2 hours.

Starting cost. Nothing. Many print-on-demand sites let you open an account and post your designs for free.

How easy is it to start? Easy, so long as you have digital files of your artwork ready to go. If you run into trouble uploading your designs, you may be able to find video tutorials of the process to help you get started.

It may take weeks or months before you start receiving orders.

Some print-on-demand platforms require you to hit a specific earning threshold before you can withdraw funds. Others pay out artist commissions on a set schedule. Payment options typically include:

Some print-on-demand sites deduct the cost of order fulfillment and shipping, then send artists their cut of the sale. Others require artists to collect funds from customer orders, then pay the print-on-demand platform for the cost of printing and shipping the items. When dealing with the latter, you may need to add a credit card to your file to pay for order fulfillment costs.

Along with a minimum age (unless given permission by a parent or guardian if you’re between 18 and 13) print-on-demand sites typically require a minimum pixel count and that your design does not infringe any copyright.

3 ways for teens to make money online

For teenagers who want to earn a little extra coin, consider these three ways to make money online.

1. Tutor via webcam

Spin your existing knowledge in math, English, science, test preparation or a foreign language into a job tutoring students. With an account at sites like SuperProf.ca, VIPKid, Preply and Skooli, you can earn money by helping children, teens — even adults — excel in a subject or skill from the comfort of your home. The amount you’ll make per lesson or per hour will vary depending on which service you choose to use.

Age threshold. You must be at least 13 to 18 years old, depending on the platform.

Set up. One week. Creating your online profile can be time-consuming, depending on the level of detail the platform requires. Some platforms require you to participate in a video interview before your application can be reviewed or accepted.

Starting cost. Account setup for tutors is typically free.

How easy is it to start? Experience or expertise in the subject is expected. Some platforms also require that you have a diploma, degree or specialized qualification in the field of study.

It may take a few weeks to establish regular students.

Expect to be paid within a few business days following the successful completion of a lesson. Some platforms require you to hit a specific earning threshold before you can withdraw funds. Payment options typically include:

Some platforms let their tutors set their own rates and take a percentage-based commission. Others set rates on their tutors’ behalf.

Webcam, microphone, past experience and qualifications.

2. Take online surveys

Many companies are interested in the opinions and preferences of Canadians, and they’re willing to pay for them. Sites like Survey Junkie Canada, Swagbucks, Daily Rewards Canada, Lifepoints, and Maru Voice Canada allow you to create a profile for free. In exchange for up to an hour of your time, you’ll receive cash or points that can be redeemed for gift cards. The pay range can be anywhere from $0.50 to $10 per survey. Avoid scam survey sites and services by reading reviews and vetting the platform before you sign up. As a general rule of thumb, never join a survey site that charges you to create a profile.

Age threshold. 13+

Set up. A few minutes to complete your online profile.

Starting cost. Nothing. It’s free to sign up for reputable survey sites.

How easy is it to start? Easy. All you need to do is create a profile and find surveys you qualify for.

5 – 60 minutes per survey, depending on the type.

Some online survey websites have earnings thresholds you must surpass before you can withdraw your earnings. Payment options typically include:

  • Online gift cards.

Avoid scam survey sites and services by reading customer reviews and refrain from joining sites that charge a fee to create a profile.

Computer or mobile devices with access to the Internet, an email account, and a way to be paid online, such as through Paypal.

3. Sell photos to a stock image service

If you enjoy photography and want to start building an online presence as a photographer, selling images to a stock photography service online could be worth your while. Sites like 500px.com, Foap.com, Adobe Stock, Dreamstime, and Crestock allow you to create an account and upload photos. The method and amount of payment will vary depending on which site you choose. In general, you’ll earn more money the more frequently your images are downloaded.

Age threshold. 18+ — though people as young as 14 may be able to register their photos on some sites with permission from a parent or guardian.

Set up. 1 – 2 hours to ensure your digital files meet quality guidelines, upload photos and organize your online portfolio.

Starting cost. It’s often free to create an account on stock image websites. Some platforms offer premium memberships for a fee.

How easy is it to start? Photography experience is beneficial. High-quality photos will increase the odds that your photos will be downloaded and, by extension, your money-earning potential.

It depends. You can upload files of your photos in a matter of minutes, but it may take some time for others to notice and download your photos. If you plan to add to your stock photography portfolio, expect to spend hours taking, editing and processing photos.

Some stock photography websites require contributors to hit a specific earning threshold before they can withdraw funds. Once a payment request is sent, it may take seven to 15 business days to process. Payment options typically include:

Photographers don’t always retain the copyrights to their work after submitting to a stock website. Check the fine print before you sign up to contribute.

Phone or camera capable of taking high-quality photographs, time, Internet connection and the ability to accept online payment, such as through PayPal.

How to make money offline in Canada

No Internet connection? No problem. You don’t need access to the world wide web to start a side hustle . There are plenty of ways to make money offline.

1. House-sit

Friends or family going out of town? Make some money by offering to house-sit. You may be asked to stay overnight or simply drop in on occasion to water the plants and collect mail. If they’ve got pets that need looking after, bonus! Pet-sitting typically requires a bit more time and energy but could offer more compensation. House- or pet-sitting can be a lucrative way to earn some extra income, and you typically don’t need any special qualifications.

Age threshold. Any, so long as the person you house-sit for thinks you can be entrusted with the task.

Set up. None.

Starting cost. None.

How easy is it to start? Easy.

Opportunities to house-sit may be plentiful or few and far between, depending on your availability, where you live and how well you promote your services.

Expect to be paid when you arrive to begin the house-sitting job or at the end of your stay. Common payment methods include:

  • Interac e-Transfer.

The person you house-sit for may expect regular updates (or photographs of their furry friends, if you’re pet-sitting). Make sure you clarify expectations and preferred communication methods before you begin the job.

Availability when asked to house or pet-sit, ability to travel to and from homes.

2. Walk dogs

If you’re an animal lover, this one’s for you. Not only can you make money walking other people’s dogs, but you’ll also get some exercise out of the arrangement. Win, win. Even if the weather’s crummy, some pet owners will pay you to drop by their home and just hang out with their four-legged friends. Getting paid to play with dogs? Not a bad gig.

Age threshold. Any, so long as the person you’re dog-walking for feels confident in your ability to handle their pet.

How easy is it to start? Easy — although some pet owners may prefer that you have previous dog-walking experience.

It depends on the needs of your clientele.

You may be paid upfront for each walk or on a set schedule if you have a recurring client. Common payment methods include:

Some dogs may require special care when out for a walk, like unique harnesses or walking implements, predetermined walking routes, or methods of managing leash-reactive behaviours. Clarify expectations with pet owners before you commit to the job.

Comfortable around dogs, ability to travel to and from pet owners’ houses.

3. Clean houses

This side hustle requires a little more time and elbow grease, but there’s plenty of earning potential here if you’re up to the task. It’s helpful to have your own vehicle for this side hustle, as public transit to and from clients’ homes can be tricky when you’re lugging around a bunch of cleaning supplies.

Age threshold. Any.

Set up. In many cases, you’ll be expected to bring your own cleaning supplies. Before you offer up your services, try to secure a mop, bucket, vacuum, and additional cleaning implements you may need on the job.

Starting cost. None, if you have your own cleaning supplies and transportation.

How easy is it to start? Easy — if you have access to your own cleaning supplies. Some clients may prefer that you have previous cleaning experience.

It typically takes several hours to clean a house, depending on its size.

Expect to receive payment on a per-visit basis, or arrange for scheduled payments for repeat customers. Common payment methods include cash or cheque.

Every home is different, so be prepared to customize your services based on the needs of each client.

Transportation to and from client homes, cleaning supplies.

4. Offer up your landscaping services

Landscaping can span a range of seasons and services, from cutting grass in the summer to raking leaves and shovelling driveways as the weather cools. Going door-to-door is one way to spread the word about your services, but you can also put up fliers and advertise on bulletin boards in local community buildings.

Starting cost. None, if you have your own tools.

Yard work typically takes an hour or two, depending on the nature of the task.

Expect to receive payment on a per-visit basis. Common payment methods include:

Prepare to modify your offered services based on the weather and season.

Access to landscaping tools.

5. Charge for handy work

If you know your way around a toolbox, you may be able to make some extra cash completing home repairs. This can range from painting trim to fixing a faulty faucet — and everything in between. If you’ve got the know-how, there are plenty of ways to make money with handy work.

Starting cost. None, if you have access to tools.

How easy is it to start? Easy — though you’ll likely need to be handy with tools.

Most tasks around the house will only take an hour or two to complete. How frequently you work will depend on how much work is available.

Expect to be paid once you’ve completed a task. Common payment methods include:

Handy work can be dangerous, especially when working with power tools or systems you’re unfamiliar with, like electrical wiring. Don’t agree to any work you’re not confident you can safely complete.

Access to and proficiency with tools.

6. Sell stuff you don’t need at a garage sale

Selling online can be a hassle. Why not skip the sign-up process and shipping labels in favour of selling your stuff in person? You may not be able to sell everything you’d like to get rid of, but a garage sale can be a lucrative way to give your old things a new home.

Set up. You’ll need at least a few days to gather items to sell, spread the word and organize your wares.

Starting cost. None, if you have the space to host a garage sale.

How easy is it to start? Garage sales require planning and organization.

About a week.

Expect to be paid immediately as you sell items. Cash is popular, but you can request payment by whatever method you prefer.

Best for flexibility

Notion

Cheapest paid plan (billed monthly)

Number of users, number of projects/tasks, what you should know.

Notion is a versatile task management platform that gives you a high degree of control and customization even on its free plan. With an abundance of views and formats, including Kanban boards, Gantt charts, calendar views and to-do lists, it offers users multiple ways to track and organize projects. You can also make use of thousands of templates built by Notion and its users, catering to an array of health and fitness, work and office and day-to-day home management needs.

You won’t need to pay anything to get unlimited pages and workflows as an individual, but you’ll need to upgrade to give multiple users full functionality. While you can upload unlimited files on the free plan, you’ll be limited to 5 MB per file, as well as a seven-day history and one synced database.

We’d recommend it if you want to use one platform to manage a variety of project and task types with flexible views and displays; it’s particularly good for content creators.

Pros and cons

  • Multiple views, including Kanban boards, Gantt charts and to-do lists.
  • Thousands of versatile templates for things like health and fitness, work and home.
  • Free version offers individuals unlimited pages and workflows.
  • Custom automation features only available on paid plans.
  • Maximum file upload of 5 MB on free plan.
  • Limited admin and security features on free plan.

Best for customization

ClickUp

ClickUp’s free platform gives you a highly capable and customizable task management platform with an unlimited number of tasks and members. It also offers 24/7 customer service on all plans. You’ll be able to view tasks in unlimited lists, boards and calendars, but you’ll only get 60 uses of Gantt charts, timelines and workloads.

The free plan also allows custom statuses and up to 20 custom task types, as well as other useful features like multiple assignees, checklists, dependencies and a basic custom field manager. However, you’ll only be able to create five “spaces” as part of the free plan — unlimited spaces are only available on paid plans. There are also no time-tracking features and very limited other reporting capabilities.

  • Free version offers unlimited free plan members and tasks.
  • A range of views, including Kanban boards and Gantt charts.
  • 24/7 customer support on all plans.
  • Limits on how many views, custom fields and workloads you can use.
  • No time tracking features.
  • Only five ‘spaces’ on free plan.

Best for automation

Trello

While Trello’s free platform only offers its Kanban-style board view, its two main highlights are its automation services and unlimited power-ups. With its Butler automation, you’ll be able to create rules, buttons and commands, and repetitive actions are recognized with suggested automations that help increase productivity. Third-party apps you can integrate include Slack, Jira, Gmail, Microsoft Teams and Google Drive.

You’ll be limited to 10 MB file uploads and only 10 boards per workspace, though with unlimited storage and workspaces for all plans, this isn’t too restrictive. It’s not ideal if you want to see projects and tasks in calendar or timeline views, but as a basic task manager with smart automation tools, it can be a useful platform for individuals and small businesses.

  • Very straightforward and easy to use.
  • Built-in automation features, including an automation bot called Butler.
  • Unlimited power-up feature lets you integrate third-party apps.
  • File uploads are limited to 10 MB per file.
  • You only get up to 10 boards per workspace.
  • Limited view options.

Best for collaboration

Hive

Hive comes with its own native communication tools, allowing for straightforward collaboration with up to 10 workspace members on its free plan. As a task manager, it’s fairly capable, offering unlimited tasks and subtasks as well as multiple views such as Kanban, Gantt, calendars and tables. However, you’ll only get two pages and 100 workflows, and while Kanban views are unlimited, the free plan only offers 100 uses of Gantt, calendar and table views.

Your ability to customize projects and tasks will also be fairly restricted with no custom fields or labels, and your storage limit on the free plan will be 200 MB overall. Its free plan also comes without a few other features, such as AI assists, custom dashboards and analytics. We’d recommend it as a simple free task manager for small teams working together that will benefit from its native collaborative tools.

  • Native collaboration and communication tools.
  • Multiple views and layouts.
  • Unlimited tasks and sub-tasks.
  • 200 MB storage limit.
  • 10 projects and two pages on free plan.
  • No custom project fields or task labels.

Best for startups using Zoho

Zoho projects.

Zoho Projects

Zoho offers a project manager as part of its larger suite of tools and products, offering a free version for up to three users as well as a 10-day free trial on its paid plans. You’ll be able to manage two projects, create feeds, share documents and custom statuses and set up task dependencies within projects. It’s particularly useful for startups already making use of other Zoho products like CRM, Meeting and Sprints, all of which integrate into the free platform.

You can also use third-party app integrations for Microsoft Teams and Office 365, Slack, Dropbox, Zendesk and Zapier. However, there are some significant limitations to the free version, including limited customization — you can’t create custom fields or views, and there are only basic reporting capabilities.

  • Integrates with Zoho CRM, Meeting and Sprints.
  • Straightforward and easy to use.
  • Offers useful core features, including document sharing, subtasks and custom statuses.
  • Only three users and two projects on free plan.
  • No Gantt charts, custom views, time tracking or custom fields.

Best for client task management

Teamwork

Teamwork will be particularly useful for agencies needing to manage client tasks, as it comes with built-in billable time-tracking features and estimated time management. It also offers client-level insights and client-company management, though you’ll only get client users with premium paid plans. With Teamwork, you’ll also get a range of automation features, including automatic Slack updates, HubSpot deals and Microsoft Teams messages.

It does have drawbacks in the shape of limited reporting capabilities — while all plans come with a dashboard, only premium paid plans offer reports on status, portfolio health, time, utilization and profitability. You also won’t have any phone, live chat or email support options on its free plan.

  • Billable time-tracking and invoicing features useful for agencies.
  • Client views and management features.
  • Wide range of automation features.
  • No phone, live chat or email support.
  • Limited reporting and customization options.
  • No client users on free plan.

Best for individuals and freelancers

Monday

Monday is a popular task management platform with businesses worldwide, but we’d recommend its free plan specifically for individuals and freelancers managing their businesses. It offers a straightforward Kanban interface only, with over 200 templates available, so you’ll be able to create up to three boards with two users and unlimited documents.

However, Monday’s free plan is missing a number of wider features like timeline, Gantt and calendar views, as well as offering no integrations or automations. It’s a relatively simplistic platform compared to others, so we’d recommend it more for individuals than teams that will need more advanced collaboration and reporting capabilities.

  • Over 200 templates available.
  • Apps for iOS and Android.
  • Intuitive and easy to use interface.
  • No integrations on free version.
  • Only offers Kanban view.

Best for complex tasks

Asana

We’d recommend Asana’s powerful platform as an ideal choice for small businesses managing complex tasks or projects with plenty of moving parts. With unlimited tasks, projects, file storage, assignees and messages alongside multiple views such as boards, calendars and lists all included on its free plan, it’s a capable piece of software. You’ll also have access to over 100 free third-party integrations such as Microsoft Teams, Adobe Creative Cloud, Okta and Tableau.

However, you won’t be able to use timelines, Gantt views, goals or portfolios with the free plan, nor time-tracking, workflows or various automation features. The free plan is also fairly limited when it comes to reporting, with only status updates and CSV and PDF exports available.

  • Unlimited project management essential features.
  • Multiple views available.
  • Over 100 free integrations.
  • Limited reporting features.
  • No 24/7 support.

Best for app building

Podio

Podio offers a unique solution for businesses that will benefit from building their own customized project management apps to suit their specific needs. As well as the ability to design a bespoke task manager for your team, you’ll have access to hundreds of user-created apps online. It allows you to keep all important aspects of your business and projects in one central place, depending on the requirements of you and your team.

However, its free version is limited in the other features it offers — including the number of items and client users you can support. It also doesn’t offer automated workflows or visual reports, so keep this in mind if you’re considering Podio.

  • You can build your own customizable apps for project management.
  • You’ll also have access to hundreds of pre-made apps.
  • Live chat support available.
  • Limited features on the free plan.
  • Takes a while to set up and customize to your exact specifications.

Best for scaling up

GoodDay

With a robust set of features and capabilities as well as relatively affordable price plans for upgrading, we’d recommend GoodDay for businesses looking to scale up their operations. Its free version is already quite powerful, offering unlimited projects and tasks for up to 15 users, with views including lists, boards, tables, calendars, event summaries and portfolios. You can customize views, priorities, workflows and statuses, as well as set up dependencies, reminders and to-do lists.

Other customization options are only available on paid plans, such as task, project and user fields, as well as task types and IDs. Additionally, many security features and all CRM features are only available when you upgrade, but with the next price plan up only costing $6 per month, it’s an affordable choice for scaling up.

  • Unlimited projects and tasks.
  • Unlimited views, with most available on free plan.
  • Powerful features for big businesses with affordable plans for scaling up.
  • Many customization options unavailable on free plan.
  • No finance, time tracking, chats or automation.

Best task management software comparison

Methodology

We extensively research the key competitors within an industry to determine the best products and services for your business. Our experts identify the factors that matter most to business owners, including pricing, features and customer support, to ensure that our recommendations offer well-rounded products that will meet the needs of various small businesses.

We collect extensive data to narrow our best list to reputable, easy-to-use products with stand-out features at a reasonable price point. And we look at user reviews to ensure that business owners like you are satisfied with our top picks’ services. We use the same rubric to assess companies within a particular space so you can confidently follow our blueprint to the best free task management software.

The best task management software has positive user reviews on customer review sites and app stores. Task management software companies should provide customers with fast and reliable support. Using a combination of phone support, live chat and knowledge bases, customers should be able to quickly resolve issues 24/7.

Task management software should have role assignment features, timelines and dependencies. It should also allow businesses to use customizable templates, track expenses and track milestones.

And the best task management software should offer client access, billing and invoice capabilities and budgeting features.

What is task management software and how does it work?

Task management software is a digital tool you can use as an individual or a business to manage, organize and prioritize tasks. While levels of features and capabilities will vary between platforms, many also offer the ability to communicate between team members, share files and updates and track progress toward objectives.

You’ll be able to use task management software to create and assign tasks, set deadlines, allocate resources and allow for collaboration between colleagues. These tools can help you and your business increase productivity and efficiency. However, it’s important to be aware of how complex your needs are.

Some task management programs can be complex and could end up reducing your productivity and organization, which is why it’s so important to find the right platform for your needs.

Benefits of free task management software

Using task management software can offer a number of benefits for individuals and businesses, including:

  • Free forever: A good free task management software will offer unlimited projects or workflows without any extra costs — not just a free trial before you have to pay.
  • Productivity: Task management platforms can increase your team’s productivity through automation, progress tracking and reporting, saving time on repetitive tasks.
  • Centralized workflow: You can use task management software to keep all workflows centralized, allowing easy access for all team members and collaborators to stay updated and informed.
  • Collaboration: You’ll be able to clearly assign roles and allocate resources on projects and tasks to different team members, and many platforms also allow team members to work together and communicate.
  • Manage big projects: Complex and lengthy projects can be broken down into separate tasks and workflows with multiple teams and team members.
  • Remote workers: If you rely on remote workers or freelancers, many task management platforms allow all team members to collaborate online from any location.

Who needs task management software?

Task management software can prove useful for a variety of individuals and businesses. You might be a freelancer with a number of client tasks to manage or a hobbyist running a side hustle — in which case, a free task manager will be ideal.

Likewise, small teams and businesses can also benefit from using task management software to organize and track workflow progress for team projects. A free plan or trial period offers a great way to try out different platforms and products so you can find one that suits your needs best before committing to a paid plan with more features and capabilities required by your business.

How to choose the best task management software

Choosing the best free task management software for your business means considering a range of factors and how each of these will best suit your needs. You will need to think about the core features offered by each platform, as well as whether it plugs into any existing software you have and how easy and intuitive it is to use.

Additionally, you should look into the customer support options each platform offers, as this will be crucial in case things go wrong and your work is at risk.

Key features to look for

Levels of complexity and customization will vary between platforms, but in general, you should look out for the following features as part of your task management software:

  • Sub-tasks: Key to keeping big projects organized, task managers should allow you to split tasks and assign different deadlines and workers to each sub-task.
  • Views and visualizations: You should also be able to see your tasks and projects in different views, like Kanban dashboards or Gantt charts. You may find these to be limited in free versions of some platforms, so check price plans to ensure you’re getting what you need.
  • Integration: If you have any existing software or hardware in use for your business, such as finance and accounting apps, design tools or communication platforms, it’s worth seeing if these will plug into the task management software you want. It helps keep everything synchronized and centralized.
  • Tracking and reporting: Your task manager should also allow you to track task and project progress against deadlines and objectives, as well as generate reports.
  • Automation: Some platforms will even offer automation services that let you set up automatic tracking and reporting.
  • Collaboration: Lastly, if you’re managing a team’s workload, it’s vital they can work together, so look for task management software that allows for communication and role delegation.

Ease of use

Some task management tools will be relatively simple and easy to use, with intuitive drag-and-drop interfaces that allow for straightforward organization. However, others offer more complex capabilities, including multiple views like Gantt charts, calendars, lists and galleries, automated reporting and collaboration between multiple team members.

Consider what you’ll need the software for, how many people and tasks you’ll be managing and what kind of insights you’ll want when making your choice.

Security

You should also factor in any security requirements you might have, especially if you’re a big organization or you use third-party apps, providers or even freelancers. Being able to control access on multiple levels may be particularly important. Additionally, consider things like two-factor authentication, secure sharing and data protection when choosing platforms.

Customer service

If something goes wrong with your task manager, it can affect your business’s ability to complete projects and assure stakeholders of progress. Customer service is a key part of being able to resolve issues, so look for providers that offer both round-the-clock availability and instant contact by phone or live chat as a priority.

How much does task management software cost?

When looking for free task management software, consider whether it’s truly free forever — meaning you’ll have access to all the features on the free plan forever without having to pay.

While this might mean many advanced features are hidden behind paywalls, you’ll at least be able to rely on the software for your basic needs without restriction. This is in contrast to free trials that often give you access to the entire platform for a limited time, after which you won’t be able to use it without paying.

If you’re looking to try a free plan in order to get a feel for a specific task management software before committing to a paid plan, you’ll likely be more on the lookout for usability as well as scalability. Consider which paid plans offer the most bang for your buck to narrow down your options, but focus on which free software feels the most natural to use for your business.

You may find that some software platforms offer prices on a per-user basis while others offer a set number of users for each plan. Others may even have a minimum-user requirement, so if they charge a set price per user and require at least three users, you’ll need to pay three times the price you see given as a minimum.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

The best free task management software will depend entirely on your needs and requirements as an individual or business. ClickUp and Notion both offer great customization features, with Notion especially good for content creators.

Paid task management software plans offer a range of extra benefits, including more users or projects, additional features and advanced integrations and security. These will often be more useful for bigger teams and companies managing complex projects with multiple moving parts and stakeholders that need to be kept informed.

When prioritizing tasks in project management, you should consider the resources available, any dependencies on the task being completed and the urgency of the request.

Task management software lets you manage multiple tasks at work by allowing you to create, organize and assign tasks, set deadlines, track progress and, if required, add sub-tasks. All tasks are kept in one place and accessible for anyone who needs to see them, often in digestible formats like calendars, boards and timelines.

Improving task management skills will require you to be disciplined and attentive to detail in order to get the best from task management software and boost your productivity. You should:

  • Focus on prioritizing tasks on your to-do list.
  • Create a manageable schedule for delivery with realistic deadlines.
  • Ensure you’re communicating with stakeholders to keep everyone on the same page.

The best software will make this easy and help you manage your workload efficiently and effectively — but it’s made even easier when you know you’ve picked the right task management software for your requirements.
