How to use a PS3 controller on PC

A guide for using the DualShock 3 wired and Bluetooth, from Windows 7 to Windows 11.

  • Windows 10/11 setup
  • Windows 7/8 setup

The PlayStation 3's controller, the Dualshock 3, was never meant to be used on the PC, which means it isn't exactly the easiest pad to plug in and start playing with. But are we gonna let that stop us? Obviously not.

The PS3 controller is still special, and there's a very specific reason to use it on PC, especially if you emulate PS2 or PS3 games. The Dualshock 3 has something the best PC controllers don't have: Pressure-sensitive analog face buttons. That makes the Dualshock 3 the best choice for playing games in the PCSX2 or RPCS3 emulators. Metal Gear Solid 3, for example, just doesn't play right without those analog buttons, a feature they had to modify for the PC port.

Longtime PlayStation gamers may also just prefer the feel of Sony's older controllers over the Dualshock 4 or Dualsense, which changed up the analog sticks and shape. Here's the best way to get your PS3 controller working on PC. On Windows 10 or 11, there's thankfully a very convenient tool that makes the DualShock 3 much easier to configure than it used to be.

Note: Steam actually has native support for the DualShock 3, meaning you can simply plug the controller in and set it up through the Big Picture mode Controller settings menu. However, Steam does not support the DualShock 3's gyro controls or (more importantly!) its analog face buttons, which are what we're really after. Follow this guide to get the PS3 controller working on PC with those buttons working, too.

Windows 10/11 DualShock 3 setup

What you need.

  • Dualshock 3 and mini-USB cable
  • Optional: Bluetooth dongle
  • BthPS3 (optional, for Bluetooth)

As noted in the intro, keep in mind that Steam has built-in support for the DualShock 3 controller. If you plug the controller in with Steam running, you can then go to Settings > Controller > Desktop Configuration to customize your controls as you see fit. And if you want to play non-Steam games with the controller, you can add them to Steam with the "Games > Add a non-Steam game to my library" menu.

But presumably you're here because you want to get those analog face buttons working. For years the go-to solution was ScpToolkit, a free, open source tool that did the job but was a bit of a beast to setup. The developer of ScpToolkit sunset the project in 2016, but has since followed it up with the new DsHidMini , a DualShock 3 controller driver specifically built for Windows 10 and 11.

Here's how to get setup with it.

Note: If you've previously installed ScpToolkit on your system or ever used Sony's PSNow streaming service, you may have some leftover files that will interfere with DsHidMini. Check this troubleshooting guide for help on removing those files before you begin the installation process.

DsHidMini setup guide

To get started, do not plug your DualShock 3 in yet . We need it unplugged for the moment.

If you want Bluetooth support for your DualShock 3, first download and install BthPS3Setup_x64.msi from the project's Github here .

Now download DsHidMini .zip from the project's Github here.

DsHidMini's walkthrough recommends having Windows User Account Control enabled for the installation process. This is the warning that pops up when you're installing new software. Normally I have this turned off on my PC, but it's easy to enable for this install process. Press the Windows key and type "UAC" to bring up the User Account Control Settings menu. Move the slider all the way up to "Always notify" and click OK.

Follow the rest of the installation instructions from DsHidMini's developer here .

There are only a few steps, so I'll bullet point them here to make sure you don't miss any:

  • Extract the .zip file and open the x64 folder
  • Right-click the dshidmi.inf file and hit "Install" from the context menu
  • Right-click on igfilter.inf and hit "Install" from the context menu
  • Connect the controller via USB
  • Right-click and run DSHMC.exe as Administrator

If you run into any issues, follow the troubleshooting guide here .

How to use the DualShock 3's pressure-sensitive buttons in PCSX2 or RPCS3

Now for the most important step: getting those sweet analog buttons working.

In the DsHidMini Control software, make sure your controller is set to SDF mode (Single Device with Force Feedback). "The advantage of this mode is a 100% compatibility with all unmodified versions of PCSX2 with the LilyPad gamepad plugin (shipped by default)," writes developer Nefarius.

If you're planning to use your DualShock 3 with Steam or the RPCS3 emulator, use SXS mode .

In the emulators, select the DualShock 3 gamepad as your input and bind the buttons if necessary. In games that support pressure sensitivity, they should now work as they would on a real console.

How to use the DualShock 3 via Bluetooth

Good news: This part should be a cinch. Once you've followed the installation instructions for DsHidMini above, your PS3 controller should be working fine via a wired USB connection. And pairing it via USB should automatically pair it via Bluetooth, too!

If you unplug the DualShock 3 and it doesn't work, check out the Bluetooth troubleshooting section of the walkthrough, and make sure your version of Bluetooth is supported .

Windows 7/8 DualShock 3 setup

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 runtime
  • Microsoft DirectX runtime
  • Xbox 360 controller driver (only needs to be installed on Windows 7)
  • ScpToolkit

ScPToolkit installation guide

1. Download the software linked above, and start by installing the four Microsoft packages. If you're on a Windows 7 PC, you'll also need to install the Xbox 360 controller driver. On Windows 8, it's already built in!

2. Important step: plug your Dualshock 3 into your PC with a mini-USB cable. Now we can start making it work.

Bluetooth installation note: if you also want to be able to use the controller wirelessly, make sure you have a Bluetooth dongle plugged in or your motherboard's Bluetooth enabled. ScpToolkit notes you need a Bluetooth 2.0 or higher dongle that supports Enhanced Data Rate (EDR).

3. Download ScpToolkit and run the installer. After accepting the terms and choosing your install location, you'll get a menu of all the options to install, as in the screenshot above. I recommend leaving this to the default. Click Install to begin the installation.

Bluetooth installation note: Make sure the ScpToolkit Bluetooth Pair Utility option is ticked.

4. After about 30 seconds, ScpToolkit will be installed, and you'll see this screen, with a big green button that says Run Driver Installer. Since this is a fresh install, that's what we want to do. Click the button.

5. This screen may look intimidating, but it's still pretty simple! Check the boxes for the drivers you want to install. In this case, we want to make sure Install Dualshock 3 driver is checked (it should be by default). Now click the arrow next to "Choose Dualshock 3 controllers to install" to see a dropdown list of USB devices attached to your computer. Find the PlayStation 3 controller in the list and check it.

Bluetooth installation note: Make sure the "Install Bluetooth driver" box is checked. Like you did with the Dualshock 3, click the arrow next to "Choose Bluetooth dongles to install" and find your Bluetooth device in the list. Check it.

Note: If you're on Windows Vista, check the box for "Force Driver Installation." Otherwise, leave it unchecked . Click Install.

6. Watch the SCP Toolkit run through its installation process. You'll see lots of pop-ups on the side of your screen as it detects your hardware. Scroll to the bottom of the log and you should hopefully see "Dualshock 3 USB Driver installed" (and "Bluetooth Driver installed" if you chose to), signifying a successful installation. If all went well, click Exit.

7. Now that it's installed, you'll see ScpToolkit as an icon in your system tray. Look in your Start Menu for ScpToolkit Settings Manager. Here you can change some settings like disabling rumble, adjusting analog stick deadzones, and more. Most of these settings you should be able to leave alone.

ScpToolkit starts up with Windows by default, and also plays some sound effects that you might find obnoxious. To disable them, click the Sound settings tab and uncheck "Enable notification sounds."

PCSX2 emulator note: The PCSX2 settings tab allows you to patch the emulator's LilyPad controller plugin to support the pressure sensitive buttons. If you plan to use your PS3 controller with the emulator, click Browse to navigate to your PCSX2 installation folder, then click Enable to install the patch. Voila!

Using your Playstation 3 controller on PC

Now that it's installed, the Dualshock 3 should behave like an Xbox 360 controller. Any game with native XInput support—pretty much any modern PC game that supports gamepads—should recognize it without a hitch. Unfortunately, this means that it won't register as a PlayStation controller to the few games that have native DualShock 4 support, so you won't get the correct Square/Cross/Triangle/Circle button icons by default.

Some games let you manually choose your button icons, though. Look for that in game settings!

If you ran into issues installing ScpToolkit or using the controller, you can try posting in the official thread at the PCSX2 forums , but you may not get an answer.

How to connect your PS3 controller via Bluetooth in Windows 7/8

How to use a: - PS5 controller on PC - PS4 controller on PC - Nintendo Switch Pro controller on PC - Xbox controller on PC

If you're not about that wired business, and followed all the Bluetooth installation steps above, you should be able to simply unplug the controller, and after a couple seconds it will sync via Bluetooth. You'll get a notification in the system tray when it does. Cool!

This works after a reboot, too. If you allow ScpToolkit to start with Windows, you should simply be able to plug in your PS3 controller again and it'll instantly be recognized. Once the LED is on, unplug the controller, and it'll once again be synced via Bluetooth.

If you have issues with Bluetooth, it could be that your dongle isn't supported. You may also find help in ScpToolkit's Github discussions . Bluetooth can be finicky, and any problem you run into could be due to hardware, or your particular version of Windows, or drivers… in other words, good luck.

  • Select Choose DualShock 3 controllers to install , choose your controller, and then select Install .
  • Bluetooth dongle: Check Install Bluetooth driver , select Choose Bluetooth dongles to install drop-down menu.

This article explains how to connect and use a PS3's DualShock 3 controller with a PC, with or without a Bluetooth dongle, so that you can play games on Steam without a mouse and keyboard. We cover computers with Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, or macOS.

In addition to your DualShock 3 controller and PC, you'll need a mini-USB cable and the following files:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

To use a PS3 controller on Windows 7, you also need the Xbox 360 controller driver, which is no longer available.

When you've assembled everything you need, here's what to do:

If your DualShock 3 controller is paired with a PS3, first unplug the PS3 from its power source, or else it can cause syncing conflicts.

Plug the DualShock 3 into your PC via a mini-USB cable.

If your computer doesn't have built-in Bluetooth support, plug in your wireless Bluetooth dongle.

Download and run ScpToolkit Setup.exe . It should automatically download all of the other files it needs, so just follow all the prompts.

After the ScpToolkit finishes setting up, select the big green button above Run Driver Installer on the window that pops up.

On the next screen, make sure the boxes next to Install DualShock 3 driver and Install Bluetooth driver are checked (if you have a Bluetooth dongle plugged in).

Uncheck Install DualShock 4 driver (and uncheck Install Bluetooth driver if you don't have a Bluetooth dongle).

Select the arrow beside Choose DualShock 3 controllers to install and choose your PlayStation 3 controller from the drop-down menu.

If connecting a Bluetooth dongle, select the arrow beside Choose Bluetooth dongles to install and choose your Bluetooth device from the drop-down menu.

Select Install . When finished, select Exit .

The ScpToolkit Settings Manager will then appear in your system tray. Select it to add another device.

How to Use Your PS3 Controller With Your Computer

Once installed properly, the DualShock 3 should automatically work with the Steam client and any PC game that supports gamepads. You may be able to adjust the control settings for individual games, but your computer will recognize the PS3 controller as an Xbox controller, so keep that in mind when adjusting the button mapping. When you're done playing, turn off the DualShock by holding down the PS button on the center of the controller.

ScpToolkit must be running for the DualShock 3 controller to work on your PC.

How to Use a Wireless PS3 Controller With a PC via Bluetooth

To use your PS3 controller wirelessly, you'll either need a PC with built-in Bluetooth compatibility or a Bluetooth dongle plugged in. You must plug in the controller before you can play wirelessly. After unplugging the controller, it should automatically sync with your PC via Bluetooth if the proper drivers are installed.

How to Connect a PS3 Controller to a Mac

Using a DualShock 3 controller with a Mac is much simpler than connecting it to a PC because the necessary drivers are already present in OS X Snow Leopard and later. But setting up wireless connectivity requires some extra steps.

If you have the latest version of macOS, you can skip steps 7-10 below, as the process has become more streamlined.

Reset your PS3 controller by inserting a paperclip into the tiny hole under the L2 button on the back of the DualShock 3.

From the Apple menu on your Mac, select System Preferences > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.

Connect the controller to your Mac with a USB cable.

Hold down the PS button on your controller for 1-3 seconds until you see the red lights on top of the DualShock 3 flashing.

Unplug the controller from your Mac.

Click the + icon in the System Preferences menu, then select Bluetooth Setup Assistant .

When prompted for an access code, enter 0000 and select Accept .

Close the assistant and select PLAYSTATION3 Controller in the Bluetooth list in your System Preferences.

Select the gear icon and choose Add To Favorites and Update Services .

Turn off your Mac's Bluetooth and wait a second.

Enable Bluetooth again and wait another second. Your DualShock 3 should now work with games that supports controllers.

Once you set up controllers to be compatible with your PC, you can connect multiple PS3 controllers using a wired USB connection. You may not be able to use multiple PS3 controllers wirelessly.

You can use an Xbox 360 controller, an Xbox One controller , or an Xbox Series X controller on your PC without any extra setup. Just plug the controllers into your computer's USB ports.

This wikiHow teaches you how to connect a PS3 controller to a Windows PC with the help of the SCP toolkit program.

Step 1 Turn on your controller and connect it to your PC.

  • To turn your controller on, press the stylized "PS" button in the middle of your controller.
  • USB port locations vary depending on the type of computer you're using. If you can't locate the USB ports, check the sides or the back of your computer's CPU (desktop) or the back of the casing (laptop).
  • If you're connecting your controller via wireless dongle, you may need to first install the dongle's drivers. Make sure you follow the on-screen prompts to do so after plugging in the dongle.
  • If your PS3 controller is paired with your PS3, first unplug the PS3 from its power source.

Step 2 Navigate to the...

  • Make sure you're downloading the most recent version of the software. If you're on an out-of-date version's page, you won't see the green "Latest Release" sticker on the left side of the page.

Step 4 Double-click the toolkit setup file.

  • Click the checkbox next to "I agree to the License terms and conditions".
  • Click Next .
  • Click Install .
  • click Yes if prompted.

Step 6 Double-click the ScpToolkit Driver Installer program.

  • Also uncheck the box next to "Bluetooth" if your controllers are wired (e.g., you aren't using a dongle).
  • A good rule of thumb here is to uncheck a box next to anything you aren't using.
  • If you're using Windows Vista, you'll need to check the box next to "Force Driver Installation" in the middle-left side of the window.

Step 8 Click the box under

  • If you're using a non-wired controller, you'll need to select the USB device you're using to facilitate the connection under the "Bluetooth" section above the "DualShock 3 Controllers" drop-down box.

Step 10 Click Install.

  • Once the installation is complete, you'll hear a confirmation noise.
  • At this point, your controller's drivers have been installed and you are ready to begin using your controller with PC games.

  • This process will also work for a PS4 controller, though you'll need to first unpair the controller from within your PS4's Settings. You'll also need to install DualShock 4 drivers and select a DualShock 4 controller instead of a DualShock 3. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
  • If you run into any errors, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the SCP toolkit. When you reinstall, make sure you install any prerequisites (regardless of whether or not you think you need them) and check the "Force Driver Installation" box when installing the drivers regardless of your operating system. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 1
  • When you open the "Devices" manager on your PC (accessed by typing "joy.cpl" into the "Run" application), your PS3 controller will show up as an Xbox 360 controller. This is because the Xbox 360 controller is natively supported by Windows, while the PS3 controller is not. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

How to connect a PS3 controller to a PC

Gabe Gurwin

The PS4 has stolen the spotlight from the PS3, and it’s not long before PS5 will get all the attention. That’s still no reason to ditch your PS3 console or throw out your controllers quite yet. For gamers who enjoy playing on their PC, you can still get plenty of use out of your PS3 controllers.

Part 1: Update Windows drivers and .NET Framework

Part 2: download and install scptoolkit and drivers, part 3: create a profile and tweak settings, troubleshooting for windows 10.

Step 1: First, check your currently installed drivers by launching the Command Prompt. Once it’s open. type driverquery and press the Enter key.

Step 2: Scan the list and make sure you have these components installed:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Runtime
  • DirectX Runtime
  • Xbox 360 Controller driver – for Windows 7 and older only

Step 3: Connect your PlayStation 3 controller to your PC using a Mini USB cable (aka Mini Type-B). Typically they have a USB-A connector on the PC side but you can find cables with USB-C connectors on Amazon. Mini USB is older and larger than the more-common Micro USB connector used on the PS4 controller, mobile devices, and more.

Windows should begin installing the initial drivers when you connect the cable.

Step 1: Head to the official ScpToolkit download thread and click the green link to download the latest stable release. You’ll see the installer — ScpToolkit_Setup.exe — plus the source code packed in archives. If you want to tinker with the code, grab 7-Zip or a similar tool to extract the files.

Step 2: Locate and launch the downloaded installer as an administrator.

Step 3: Once installed, ScpToolkit prompts you to run a separate driver installer. If you don’t see this prompt, search for “Scp” and select ScpToolkit Driver Installer . On Windows 10, it may reside at the top of the Start Menu under Recently Added .

Step 4: With the ScpToolkit Driver Installer running, be sure all the boxes are checked, including Force Driver Installation .

Step 5: Click the boxed arrow next to the Choose DualShock 3 Controllers to Install option. On the resulting drop-down menu, find and select your DualShock 3 controller. If you also plan to use either a DualShock 4 or a Bluetooth dongle to enable wireless play, select those as well.

Step 6: When you’re ready, click Install . All the necessary files install and automatically configure. Don’t panic is you see loads of pop-up windows on your screen — that’s normal. Once you see the Dualshock 3 USB Driver Installed message, you’re good to go.

Step 7: Click the Exit button when the installation completes.

Your DualShock 3 is now plug-and-play, meaning you can plug it in at any time and it should work automatically!

Something to keep in mind: Since you’re technically using the Xbox 360 drivers to interact with the PS3 controller, games will likely display an Xbox control scheme. When a game wants you to “press X,” you’ll want to hit the Square button instead.

Note: As of January 2018, ScpToolkit is no longer in active development . Future Windows updates could make it an ineffective solution. As of now, though, it’s still a viable option.

If you’re so inclined, you can fine-tune your PS3 controller through various applications included with the ScpToolkit.

Step 1:  The “unstable” ScpToolkit Profile Manager does not install by default. To get this feature, run the installer again to select this tool and “modify” your current installation. You’ll then see a desktop shortcut and ScpToolkit Profile Manager added to the ScpToolkit folder on the Start Menu.

After you successfully finish that step, you can personalize button mappings and switch them out quickly. You can map keyboard and mouse commands as well.

Step 2 : Click twice on the ScpToolkit Settings Manager shortcut that will appear on your desktop. You can also do this inside the ScpToolkit folder located on the Start Menu. Once you’ve double-clicked, you’ll be able to adjust your thumbstick sensitivity, rumble, controller latency, and LED display, plus a variety of other more advanced options.

When you try your hand at Windows 10 troubleshooting, you’re bound to stumble across many different barriers in your operating system, especially when you attempt to connect particular controls to your PC. Although there are plenty of Microsoft operating systems that adequately support Xbox accessories and Xbox Live environments, earlier versions of Sony hardware are more complicated when it comes to connecting this more modern technology.

Be aware that you may encounter a few obstacles and challenges during the installation process, even with ScpToolkit helping to prevent most problems. On the contrary, you can allow driver installs. We highly recommend that no matter what you do, you should regularly back up all of your data. Doing so will save a copy of your data so you can easily restore it if you run into a situation where you lose it.

Step 1: Select Start or hit the Windows key.

Step 4: Find and click Recovery from the list on the left-hand side.

Step 5: Select Restart Now (located underneath Advanced Startup )

Step 6: Your system will restart and come up in a mode that lets you change your firmware and startup settings, which will let you bypass the driver signature enforcement.

Step 7: You’ll see a menu of options appear. Click Troubleshoot .

Step 8: Click Advanced Options.

Step 9: Select Startup Settings . Your system will restart again.

Step 10: You’ll see another menu of choices after your system restarts. Locate Disable Driver Signature Enforcement , then hit the F7 key to restart your PC a final time.

Step 11: When your system restarts again, go through the instructions above to reinstall and configure ScpToolkit.

When first signing up for the PlayStation network, not everyone picked their perfect name right away. Sometimes, after a few days or even a few years, your PSN will start to feel tired or worn. Or maybe you accidentally misspelled what you actually wanted to say. Whatever the reason, Sony has finally given PlayStation users the ability to change their PSN name.

There are multiple ways to get a new name on your PSN account, so don't feel limited by chance. Even better, if you have never updated it before, you'll even get to do it for free. Unfortunately, changing your PSN the first time is the only time it is free. If you have updated your PSN before and are looking to change it again, the cost is $4.99.

The Apple AirPods offer a convenient and effective solution to wireless audio and are compatible with many devices that support Bluetooth. However, that's the issue when trying to connect them to a PS4 or PS4 Pro. Since the console doesn't natively support Bluetooth audio, syncing AirPods to it isn't as easy as you'd expect.

Luckily, there are third-party products you can use to get the two to pair together. We'll walk you through the process in this guide.

The PlayStation 4 is a brilliant system with an absolutely killer lineup of exclusive games. That means we’ve spent plenty of time with its wireless controller, the DualShock 4. Though we appreciate its large face buttons, terrific direction pad, and responsive, snappy triggers, the DualShock does not have fantastic battery life. Typically, the DualShock 4 lasts for four to eight hours of play per charge (typically on the lower end of that range), far less than the Xbox One controller or the Nintendo Switch Pro controller.

Why does the DualShock 4 battery die so quickly? Simple -- it’s equipped with a 1000mAh battery, which is substantially smaller than standard AA batteries used in the Xbox One gamepad. Unless you want to commit to a wired connection, you’re going to want to take some steps to squeeze extra life out of your PlayStation 4 controller. Luckily, we have some tricks to help you ensure that you’ll never have to wait to play again. Change your controller’s shutoff time

How to Wirelessly Connect a PS3 DualShock Controller to Windows

Are your PS3 controllers collecting dust? Give them new life as a wireless PC controller with these steps.

Your PS3 is probably gathering dust by now, so why not put it to good use... or, at least, its controllers? Use them on your PC and give them a new life.

Although it was possible to use PS3 joypads on PCs in the past, the process was finicky, and their wireless functionality was wonky. That was until DsHidMini entered the scene. Here's how you can use a PS3 DualShock controller on your PC, both through a USB connection and wirelessly through Bluetooth

What Is DsHidMini?

DsHidMini is an open-source solution for connecting and configuring many types of joypads to a PC. As such, if you have your old PS3 or PS4 DualShock controllers around, why not put them to use with this app?

DsHidMini enables your PC to recognize them and provides XInput emulation. With Xinput being the modern standard for joypads under Windows, you'll be able to use your PlayStation controller with most modern games.

Getting the Necessary Software for Using Your PS3 Controller on a PC

By combining two pieces of software, DsHidMini, and BthPS3, you can have your PC detect your DualShock controller effortlessly both when connected with a USB cable and wirelessly through Bluetooth.

Note, though, that for this guide, we take the existence of correctly working Bluetooth functionality for granted. If your PC lacks Bluetooth support, check our buyer's guide on the best Bluetooth adapters you can grab today . Then, check our guide on how to add Bluetooth to any computer .

Download and Install DsHidMini and BthPS3

DsHidMini suggests installing BthPS3 to have your DualShock controllers correctly detected and connected to your PC. This guide will follow that suggestion, especially since we want them to work wirelessly.

DsHidMini GitHub Page

Theoretically, that's everything you need for your DualShock to work with your PC. Practically, as is Windows' tradition, it wouldn't hurt to restart once to ensure the drivers are correctly installed, activated, and work as they should.

How to Pair and Configure Your PS3 DualShock

The next step is to "pair" your controller with your PC. However, that process is somewhat unconventional compared to how you usually connect Bluetooth devices to your PC.

  • Connect your DualShock joypad to your PC using a mini-USB cable. Your joypad should begin charging.

DSHMC.exe File In File Explorer

How to Remove Remnants of Old Drivers

If your joypad isn't correctly detected, did you use another solution in the past to have it work under Windows, like Sony's official driver or ScpToolkit? If yes, the problem might be a conflict between those and the DsHidMini and BthPS3 combo.

Removing the older drivers and software is somewhat complicated. Plus, the process varies based on the driver and software used. So, we won't go over it in detail but offer a "generic guide" covering the basic steps for most cases.

Run the Command Prompt or PowerShell with Administrative rights. Then, use the commands, in sequence, if you were using ScpToolkit:

These will stop and remove all active processes and services for PlayStation joypad-enabling software you might have used in the past.

Now, press Win + X and choose Device Manager . Find and remove any mention of a "PlayStation controller" under Human Interface Devices if you were using the official Sony drivers.

For ScpToolkit, look under libusbK USB Devices instead, and right-click and Uninstall any entry you see. Also, check for and, if found, uninstall the drivers for any "Bluetooth Dongle", "DualShock controller", or "PlayStation controller" under Universal Serial Bus devices .

Then, download DriverStore Explorer from its GitHub page . Extract its archive and run the app. Enable Force Deletion on the right. Seek any libusbK USB Devices , a standalone scpvbus.inf , or bluetoothhost.inf and ds3controller.inf if using ScpToolkit.

Look for sixaxis.inf instead if using the official Sony driver. In both cases, place a checkmark next to any of those entries you'll find, and then click on Delete Drivers on the right.

Afterward, exit the app, restart your PC, and let Windows re-detect any hardware and install the default drivers. Then, repeat the steps we covered above to install BthPS3 and DsHidMini from scratch.

How to Use Your PS3 DualShock in Games

Your controller should work now in most modern games that support Xbox joypads and for most joypad-enabled titles running under Steam.

When that's not the case, run DSHMC.exe as an administrator and change the HID mode used by your joypad to the one supported by the game or app where you want to use it.

An easy way to find the HID mode to choose for a particular title is to check if there's information about it at PCGamingWiki .

Using Classic PS3 Joypads on Your Modern-Day Games for Windows

Reusing your older joypads on your PC is the smartest choice. Apart from the fact you won't have to pay a dime to do it, they're great performers, tried and tested, and you're already familiar with them.

Worst case scenario, you might have to buy a Bluetooth dongle for your PC, which would still come at a fraction of the cost of a brand-new controller.

How-To Geek

How to connect any console game controller to a windows pc or mac.

How to use any console game controller with your PC (or Mac)

Quick Links

Playstation 4 (dualshock 4), playstation 3 (dualshock 3), playstation 1 and 2 (dualshock 1 and 2), original xbox (xbox "1"), nintendo switch pro controller, wii remotes and wii u pro controllers, gamecube controllers, guitar hero controllers, other controllers.

Console controllers don't always work as soon as you plug them into a Windows PC or Mac. We've compiled a list of guides so you can learn how to make your favorite controller work with your computer.

Most controllers intended to be used on PCs, like USB Logitech controllers, will be HID-compliant devices and support the XInput or DirectInput protocol, which you can use in most games. Some may work out of the box and others may need a custom driver. For console controllers, especially older ones, you may need a hardware adapter if it doesn't plug into USB, as Bluetooth support is hit or miss.

This guide covers Windows and macOS, but most HID controllers will work on Linux, too. It'll just take a  little configuration , with which Linux users are probably familiar.

PS4 dual-shock controller

Windows supports Sony PS4 controllers without additional software as long as you plug them in via USB. You'll need a hardware adapter to use the controller wirelessly.

Macs also support Sony's latest controllers by default, even with a wireless connection. Unfortunately, these controllers show up as a generic input device, which may not work in all games.

Windows needs a custom driver for PS3 controllers. It's a bit complicated to set up, but we've got the instructions .

Macs support these controllers without any extra software. Just wirelessly connect via Bluetooth or plug it in with a USB cable.

Sony's PS1 and PS2 controllers are older and don't use USB. You can get an adapter , but it's probably best to pick up a DualShock 3, as it's almost entirely the same but with wireless and USB support.

Xbox one controller

Windows is supported fully out of the box, seeing as this is Microsoft's flagship controller. Just plug and play, or connect over Bluetooth. You can even update the controller's firmware from your PC if you're using Windows 10.

Macs support Xbox One controllers wirelessly without anything extra, but you'll need extra software if you want to plug your controller in via USB. Specifically, you need the  360Controller driver, which extends support for wired USB Xbox One controllers.

Windows supports wired 360 controllers by default, but wireless controllers will need a special USB adapter.

Mac needs a custom driver. Due to problems with kernel extensions (kexts,) wireless support causes kernel panics, and is disabled in this driver.

You'll need an adapter and some custom drivers , but it doesn't seem entirely easy. MacOS has an older driver , but it may not work on newer versions of macOS. Also, if you're crazy, you can forego the adapter altogether and splice together a couple of cables , although we don't recommend this.

Nintendo Switch controller

Nintendo's Switch Pro controller works automatically after you connect it via Bluetooth on Windows and macOS, but you'll have to set it up in Steam to use in games.

Related: How to Connect the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or Pro Controllers to Your PC

Windows will connect the controller by default, but it may not be usable as a controller in all apps. Dolphin, the Wii emulator, supports using them as inputs, but we didn't have any on hand to test system-wide use.

Mac is supported in the same way---only in Dolphin. System-wide use is technically supported, but we heavily recommend finding a new controller. MacOS Sierra broke support for the only driver, Wjoy, but it was updated on a new fork . However, the current release doesn't work either, so you'll have to build the latest commit from source in Xcode, update a bunch of build targets, fix a few errors, sign it with an Apple developer account, and then after all that you have to boot into Recovery Mode and  disable system integrity protection  to install it. Only then can you properly connect the controller.

You'll need an adapter of course, but Windows and Mac should be supported by default through HID. Support may vary though depending on the adapter you get. You can get an official one, but the  Mayflash adapter seems to work fine for half the price. This adapter has a switch so you can use it on PC as well as console, which will turn it into an HID device rather than a proprietary console only one. Dolphin can communicate with it directly, though, and will support the Wii U mode, which can fix some bugs with the additional ports.

Note that macOS's HID implementation overrides Dolphin's direct communication with the device, so it doesn't support having multiple controllers plugged in. There is a workaround , but it may not work with every adapter. It does involve disabling SIP , though admittedly just for kext extensions, which is a little safer.

guitar hero controller

This one's a little weird, as Guitar Hero has many different console versions, but there's still a thriving community on PC with CloneHero . Most should work with an adapter, so it's best to check their wiki for instructions.

Other Retro Controllers  usually need adapters, unless you get updated USB versions of them. Most adapters should use standard XInput and DirectInput connections and should be configurable in Steam and any of the apps below.

Third Party Controllers will vary depending on what you get, but most should use the same standard XInput connections. Usually, it will list its compatibility on Amazon, so make sure to buy one that's compatible, or pick up something more mainstream.

If your controller isn't listed here, or you can't get it to work with these guides, a quick Google search for the controller name plus your OS version and "driver" should lead you to decent results.

If you need to remap your controller, you can use Steam's built-in Big Picture Mode to do so. If you need to use it in a non-Steam game, you can try AntiMicro for Windows and Enjoyable for macOS, both free.

Let’s answer the question – how to use a PS3 controller on  PC ? Well, if you’ve been holding onto your PlayStation 3 controller, and it’s still in working order, why not make use of it? You can use the PS3  controller on PC  without too much hassle. Playing with an ‘older’ controller shouldn’t be difficult, even as new tech moves on – so we’re going to show you exactly how to use a PS3 controller on PC. Many people still have a strong preference for some of these older controllers, so it’s always worth operating systems like  Windows  to provide adequate  backwards compatibility .

A  keyboard  and  mouse  may be the preferred input device for PC gaming, but there are others who are more comfortable with a console controller. Anyways, some genres, like  racing  and  fighting , work better with a console controller (unless you are willing to fork over money for a special setup, like a  steering wheel  or fightstick).

No matter why you want to use a PS3 controller, we’ve got you covered. In our guide to using a PS3 controller on the PC there are essentially, 2 ways to do this (the  model of PS3 you own  is not important):

  • Connecting Your PS3 Controller on a PC via the SCP Driver Package
  • Connecting Your PS3 Controller on a PC via SCP Toolkit

Note:  If you’re looking for instructions on  connecting your PS4 controller to your PC , then check this out.

Also Note : you might have heard about MotioninJoy in the past, but it’s no longer a good option due to ads (and possible viruses). More about that below.

Prerequisites to using PS3 controller on PC

What you need:

  • Original DualShock 3 controller
  • Mini-USB cable (aka default PS3 charging cable)
  • Bluetooth dongle if you wish to connect wirelessly (optional)

Before anything else, make sure your PS3 is disconnected because if you press the PS button, it will connect with and turn on the PS3, thus not letting you connect it to your PC.

Then, connect your PS3 controller to your PC via the mini-USB cable to install the initial set of PS3 controller drivers. When the initial installation is complete, download the following (these are necessary for the SCP software to work):

  • Microsoft .NET Framework
  • DirectX Web Installer
  • Xbox 360 Controller Driver  (A controller driver for Windows 7 and older), we’ll be emulating an Xbox pad on the PS3 controller

Note : Most of you may already have these installed but it’s worth checking to avoid problems in the long run, especially if you aren’t sure if you have these in the first place. The installation process will tell you if you already have them installed so you can just opt-out from the installation process if needed.

Connect your PS3 controller to PC via SCP Driver Package

Get the drivers.

Visit the PCSX2 thread  here  and download the  latest  and  updated  version of the  SCP DS Driver . The folder will be in a 7-zip format so make sure you download and install a file archiver utility for Windows software like  WinRAR if you don’t have one yet.

Extract the downloaded  latest version  and  latest updated  zipped folders.

Open the unzipped  latest update  folder, navigate your way to  ScpServer\bin , and copy all the files in there.

Paste and replace

Open the unzipped  latest version  folder, navigate your way to  ScpServer\bin , and paste all the files you just copied in there. Replace files in the destination folder if you are prompted with a warning.

Delete original files

Now that we’re set up, you can go ahead and delete the original, zipped folders:  latest update  and  latest version  folders. You can also delete the unzipped version of the  latest update  folder. From here out all we will be using is the  latest version  folder.

Open ScpServer

Open the  ScpServer  inside the  latest version  folder and copy the  bin  folder.

Rename folder

Navigate your way to  C:\Program Files , create a folder and name it  Scarlet.Crush Productions  (since they made the software anyway), and paste the bin folder inside.

Gain Admin rights

Click  Continue  when prompted for Administrator rights.

Run as Admin

Open the pasted bin folder, right-click on  ScpDriver  application and run it as Administrator.

Configure and install

Make sure that the boxes beside  Bluetooth   Driver  (for Bluetooth configuration) and  Configure Service  are checked before clicking on the  Install  button. If you want to run your PS3 controller on a PC running Windows 7 or older, then check the  Force Install button. This will install drivers that are already pre-installed in Windows 8 or newer.

Detect your controller

Click on  Exit  when the installation is completed and open the  ScpMonitor  application. Your controller should be detected by default since you have it connected right from the start. You can also use your PS3 controller on Steam games as long as the game supports console controllers. This might require you to play in Steam’s “Big Picture Mode”.

Unplug and plug your controller back in if the controller isn’t detected. If it shows “Charging” instead of “Reserved”, then the controller is detected and working. Restart your PC if your controller still isn’t detected. If the  Host Address  shows  Disconnected  on the  SCP DS3 Monitor  software after following the steps above, this means the Bluetooth isn’t supported.

Using Bluetooth with SCP Driver Package

To connect your PS3 controller on PC (Windows 7, Windows 10, or Windows 11) wirelessly via Bluetooth, you need a Bluetooth dongle. You will also need to enable Bluetooth:

Find your folder

Open the  Zadig  folder inside the  C:\Program Files\Scarlet.Crush Productions\bin  folder and open the  Zadig application.

Load preset device

Click on  Device > Load Preset Device  and open or double-click on  Bluetooth.cfg .

Locate your dongle

Click on  Options > List All Devices  and locate your USB dongle from the drop-down menu. Open your  Bluetooth and Other Devices  settings and click on  Device and printers  under the  Related Settings  section (located at the right) to identify the USB dongle you want to connect your PS3 controller to.

Replace driver

Click on  Replace Driver  after choosing the USB dongle you want to use as your dedicated PS3 Bluetooth dongle from the drop-down menu.

IMPORTANT:  It is recommended that you get a dedicated USB dongle for your PS3 controller because replacing the Bluetooth dongle’s driver will reconfigure it to only work with your PS3 controller and nothing else. You can  technically  re-download the original drivers, but going back and forth between drivers would be a huge pain and humans hate inconvenience.

Locate host address

Check that the SCP Monitor has detected a  Host Address . If it is registering your controller, then it will look somewhat like ours below; otherwise, nothing.

Calibrate and connect

Unplug your controller from the cable and it should connect your PS3 controller to your Windows PC via Bluetooth.

NOTE : Sometimes it won’t detect on your first try so just plug it back in and unplug it again and this should detect the controller after a few seconds. You can tell if it’s working if Pad 1 is showing  BTH  instead of  USB  as shown in the image below, otherwise, you can head over to the  Calibrating and Ensuring It’s Connected  section below to manually check if it’s connected.

Connecting your PS3 controller to PC via SCP Toolkit

Download files.

Download the  ScpToolkit by clicking on the green Download button over here .

Open and install the  ScpToolkit_Setup  application you just downloaded.

Run toolkit

Click on the  Run Driver Installer  button after the installation.

Download drivers

Here you will download the drivers you will be using.  4a : First, you will need to choose the drivers for your specific controller, so “Install DualShock 3 driver” for the PS3 controller and the “Install DualShock 4 driver” for a PS4 controller.  4b (Bluetooth) : If you’re wanting to play wirelessly via Bluetooth, then check Install Bluetooth driver and then choose the Bluetooth device you want to use as your PS3/DualShock 3 PC dedicated dongle from the drop-down menu (again, assuming you want to use your PS3 controller via Bluetooth).

Click on  Install  after confirming the devices you will be using. Keep in mind that pop-ups and audio cues may show up after the installation.

Confirm changes

Open the  SCP Monitor  to confirm the changes after the installation. If this looks similar to the image below, then this means you’re good to go and you should be able to use your DualShock 3 controller wired or wireless.

How to use a PS3 controller on PC video

Calibrating and ensuring your ps3 controller is connected, view game controller settings.

For Windows 10:  To see whether it’s really working, open your  Bluetooth and Other Devices  settings again and click on  Device and printers  under the  Related Settings section.

For Windows 7:  Open the  control panel  from the  Start  menu, then open  Device and printers.  You’ll notice that your PS3 controller is replaced with an  Xbox 360 controller for Windows — that’s fine since the drivers we downloaded earlier are effectively tricking Windows into seeing the PS3 controller as an Xbox 360 controller. Right-click on it, click on  Game Controller Settings,  and click on  Properties . If the buttons you press reflect real-time on the  Properties Window , everything’s good to go.

If this reflects the buttons you press on the controller, congratulations! You can now use your PS3 controller to play games that natively support console controllers!

What about MotioninJoy?

You may have also heard about  MotioninJoy , a 3rd party software that lets you connect your PS3 controller to your PC. While this was a go-to method in the past, the interface has since changed and is now loaded with spam (and possibly viruses, too!). Even the download page redirects you to ads. Because of this, we highly recommend you  avoid MotioninJoy at all costs  and stick with the 2 methods mentioned.

PS3 controller on PC FAQs

Can i still use my ps3 controller on pc.

Yes, despite its age, you can still use your PlayStation 3 controller on PC. It takes some configuring however, practically emulating an Xbox controller to get it working. Our step-by-step guide shows you how it works.

Does PS3 controller work on Windows 11?

Yes, Windows 11 should have support for PS3 controllers via the same method as Windows 10. If you run into problems though, we recommend checking out alternative software such as DsHidMini or BthPS3.

Whether or not you prefer using a console controller for gaming is totally subjective. And obviously, you’re not alone. There are a lot of competitive gamers out there who play better on a console controller than a traditional keyboard + mouse. Either way, I hope this tutorial showed you exactly  how to use a PS3 controller on a PC . And if it didn’t, then don’t be afraid to let us know in the comments. Things like this can get confusing, especially if you’re generally not used to implementing these sorts of hacks yourself. And– as seen with MotioninJoy– services are constantly changing. Ask any questions and we will try to help!

How to Use a PS3 Controller on Your PC

Ryan Lynch

Even though the PlayStation 3 was released back in 2007, many gamers still look back fondly on the console and its controller, the DualShock 3. As a result, there is much demand to use the controller on a PC. Unfortunately, this isn’t simply a matter of grabbing a USB cable and plugging it in. But thanks to some dedicated developers, there is a way to get your PS3 DualShock 3 controller working on your PC.

Good to know : check out how to set up and configrue the PS Vita Emulator Vita 3K on your PC .

Download DsHidMini

Using the dualshock 3 wirelessly, prep your pc for dshidmini installation, set up dshidmini, frequently asked questions.

Using a DualShock 3 controller on a PC has been a reality for quite some time. This was thanks to a free, open-source utility called ScpToolkit. The only issue was that configuration wasn’t user-friendly. In addition, the developers of ScpToolkit decided to abandon the project back in 2016. A new utility, dubbed DsHidMini, has picked up the slack. DsHidMini is a DualShock 3 controller driver made specifically for Windows 10 and 11. Thankfully, this utility is much easier to use.

DsHidMini download page on GitHub.

To get started, download the .ZIP file from the DsHidMini GitHub page. Before you unzip the file, you’ll need to determine whether you want to use your DualShock 3 wirelessly or not. If you do, continue on to the next section. If not, feel free to skip to the third section.

If you want to use your DualShock 3 controller wirelessly with your PC, you’ll need to download a separate utility called BthPS3. You must install this driver first before you continue with the DsHidMini setup. Head to the BthPS3 GitHub page and download the appropriate .msi file for your operating system.

BthPS3 download page on GitHub.

For the majority of people, it will be the x64 version. Once the utility downloads, run the file to start the installation process. When finished, you can continue installing DsHidMini. Alternatively, skip this step completely if you don’t plan on using your DualShock 3 controller wirelessly.

Tip : if you’re a macOS user, check out our guide on how to connect a controller to your Mac .

The developers of DsHidMini recommend having Windows User Account Control enabled before attempting to install the DsHidMini driver. This is usually enabled by default, but you may have disabled it at some stage.

  • To check, type “UAC” into the search bar embedded in the Windows taskbar and hit Enter .
  • A dialogue box will open asking if you want to allow an app to make changes to your device.
  • Click “Yes.” You will see the User Account Control Settings window. Ensure that the slider is at the top and set to “Always Notify.”

I previously installed ScpToolkit, and now DsHidMini doesn't work. What should I do?

Can I use a DualShock 3 controller in Steam?

Yes, and since Steam has native DualShock 3 controller support, you don’t even have to install DsHidMini to do it. Plug in a DualShock 3 with Steam running. Within Steam, head to “Settings -> Controller -> Desktop Configuration” to configure the DualShock 3 controller however you would like.

Can I still use DsHidMini if I'm using Windows 7 or 8?

DsHidMini is a DualShock 3 controller driver made specifically for Windows 10 and 11. Unfortunately, this means that you won’t be able to use it on a machine running Windows 7 or 8, but you’re not completely out of luck. While ScpToolkit is no longer being updated, you can still try to install it on your system to get your DualShock 3 to work on your PC.

Can I play PlayStation console games on my PC?

Thanks to emulation, the answer is yes. An emulator is a piece of software for your PC that acts like a video game console’s original hardware. This allows users to play digital copies of the games made for that console. There are a number of emulators for a wide variety of systems available. However, if you’re mainly concerned with Sony hardware, be sure to check out ePSXe for PlayStation 1, PCSX2 for PlayStation 2, and RPCS3 for PlayStation 3. We have a dedicated guide that explains how to get started with RPCS3 emulation on your PC .

As for games, you’ll need to get your hands on ROMs (digital copies of the games). The legality of ROMs is kind of a grey area, but there are some 100 percent legit ways to get your hands on some .

How to use a PS3 controller on PC, and play any games with it?

Tired of looking for a decent program to use PS3 controller on PC ? That's it, full stop, you have found it :) reWASD will help you set up a PS3 controller on Windows 10 or 8, change hardware settings for your gamepad, assign more than 1000 mappings to one controller, connect PS3 controller to PC wirelessly without summoning the evil spirits to help you, and more!

Shall we start?

reWASD is a powerful joystick remapper, and also a controller emulator software. If you want to use PS3 controller on PC as DualShock 4 or Xbox One, it's a matter of three clicks with reWASD. If the games you play do not have controller support, you can assign keyboard and mouse bindings to PS3 controller on PC, and play any game. A lot of other features permit customization of the tiniest details, like deadzones for analog controls, haptic feedback, key combinations… When you finish reading this article, you will know everything about how to use a PS3 controller on PC exactly the way you need ;)

  • Download and install reWASD
  • Plug in the PS3 controller to PC, if you have an available Bluetooth connection, reWASD will ask if you want to Pair the controller. If you prefer using it wired, click Skip
  • Create a new profile, the config will appear automatically
  • Let the remapping begin!

Here are some of the coolest features for your PS3 controller on PC, keep reading to learn more about them!

What to start with, and how to pair PS3 controller to PC?

Back in the days when controllers became popular for PC games, it was hard to use them wirelessly. Later, some third-party drivers started taking over, but since they're mostly open-source, they may be unstable. Nowadays, how to pair PS3 controller to PC is no longer a question: with reWASD you get a driver that permits using the controller via Bluetooth connection, and also remapping the hell out of it!

What about the available adapters, you may say? Well, some of them report the PS3 triggers as digital controls, which means no speeding up gradually in racing games with PS3 controller on PC, or while controlling a spaceship. Usable, but not fun. reWASD will keep your triggers analog, and the controller — connected wirelessly ;)

How to use PS3 controller on PC for the games with no controller support?

The world is not a perfect place, but we try our best to make it better. Even though not every game supports controllers, reWASD helps setting up PS3 controller on PC and use it even for games with no controller support. Set up the binds the perfect way, tune mouse sensitivity, assign new actions to stick zones to make the gameplay more intuitive. What can make this process even more pleasant, is that you can grab a ready-to-go custom config to use for PS3 controller on PC from the community. A lot of users have shared their presets for hundreds of games, so this will be as easy as pie!

Using PS3 controller on Windows 10 as Xbox controller

Remember when I said that reWASD is an emulator too? Let's clear some things up, XInput controllers are more likely to have support in games. However, PS3 controller on PC with Windows 10 or 8 also has a huge potential. When you create a config, you will see the Magic Wand below the image of a controller. Click it once, choose the needed controller, and Apply this configuration. Three clicks, as promised, now PS3 controller is hidden from the system and seen as an Xbox One or Xbox 360. Say again that magic doesn't exist ;)

Setting up PS3 controller on PC and changing hardware settings

Wikipedia says that PS3 controllers were no longer produced after 2008, so if you have one at home, it's far from new. Back to reality, you need to do something before you use PS3 controller on PC. Rickety sticks? Increase the deadzone to avoid unwanted actions. Triggers are too sensitive? Adjust the deadzone to be stealth-y, no accidents allowed. Change the Stick response: pick one of the existing profiles, or create your own custom curve. Invert the X and Y axes, swap sticks… In other words, the world is your oyster!

Add more than a 1000 button assignments to PS3 controller on PC

It can be hard to fit all the desired mappings you want to use with PS3 controller on PC. You have 25 keys at your disposal, and many games need way more controls. reWASD offers you a lot of features to assign more keys to one controller, and here they are:

  • Activators: set Single, Double, Triple and Long press mappings to one key. Assign Start and Release press too, they will execute when the key goes down and then up, responsively.
  • Shortcuts: execute a mapping when 2, 3 or 4 buttons are pressed.
  • Shift mode: create a Shift layer of mappings, and activate it with a Shift modifier (which can be pressed and held, or Toggled). Add up to 4 Shift layers to each config.
  • Slots : Apply up to 4 configs to one PS3 controller at the same time.

Sidenote on Slots, reWASD helps you use PS3 controller on PC in a full swing: Player LEDs can display the Slot that is currently in use.

How to play with PS3 controller on PC and use the fabulous re WASD features?

With reWASD, you can create the combos of any complexity. Start with something simple to copy-paste the files, end up with a combo with Breaks, Pauses, and use them for quick edits in Desktop applications. Imagine, how easier your life can be with a PS3 controller on PC and reWASD?

What about the Toggle and Turbo mappings? Toggle starts firing the mapping after the first click and stops after the second one. Turbo executes the mapping with a customizable pause as long as you hold the button. Both are very powerful, and once you try them, you can never go back ;)

One more thing, before you remap PS3 controller on PC with re WASD

A good tip while setting up PS3 controller to PC is to make it as intuitive as possible. Autodetect permits adding associated files to game Profiles in reWASD, and activates certain configs when the game is in focus. Set it and forget it! Or what about some useful commands? Lock the PC, turn off your controller, save screenshots to a customizable folder in one click. Anything you need is at the tip of your fingers!

How to connect a PS5 controller to PCs and laptops

W ant to connect a PS5 controller to PC and play games in style? Who could blame you? Sony’s DualSense controller is one of (if not the) best game controllers you can buy thanks to its immersive haptics, adaptive triggers and iconic twin-stick layout augmented with a modern ergonomic design.

Thankfully, PC support for the DualSense is a class above what was on offer for Sony’s previous controller, the DualShock 4. Whether you’re using a laptop or PC, connecting the DualSense controller is a breeze and can be done with a cable or via Bluetooth.

How to connect a PS5 controller to PCs and laptops: Before you begin

Sony’s DualSense is compatible with Macs running macOS Big Sur 11.3 and Windows PCs running Windows 10 and up. You can also use your PS5 controller with iPhones, iPads, and Apple TV with iOS/iPadOS/tvOS 14.5 and up installed, as well as Android smartphones and tablets running Android 12 and up.

However, not all games will offer the full features of the DualSense controller wirelessly via Bluetooth or USB connections. So, it may be worth checking which games support the controller’s advanced haptics and adaptive triggers to best decide how to connect your DualSense ahead of time.

With all that said, let’s dive into how you can connect a PS5 controller to PC or laptops and get you making the most of your game library.

How to connect a PS5 controller to PCs and laptops by USB cable

Connecting a DualSense controller to a PC or laptop couldn’t be simpler, you just need to make sure you have the right cable to hand. Depending on your available ports, you’ll either need a USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable, or a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable.

Once you have the correct cable to hand, the follows steps should have you up and running:

Step 1: Connect your cable to an available port on your PC or laptop (USB Type-C or USB Type-A), and then the USB Type-C port on your DualSense controller.

Step 2: As a Plug-and-Play device, your machine should automatically recognize the DualSense controller and set it up automatically as a gamepad.

It’s as simple as that! You should now be able to use the DualSense controller across any gamepad supporting title, though more advanced functions such as Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback are restricted to titles that support them.

How to connect a PS5 controller to PCs and laptops by Bluetooth

Connecting a DualSense controller to a laptop via Bluetooth is fairly routine, as most modern laptops come with Bluetooth support out of the box. If you’re looking to connect your controller to a PC via Bluetooth, then you may need to invest in a Bluetooth adapter if your system doesn’t feature the wireless option natively.

We recommend the Avantree DG80, available for $29.99 at Amazon. It's inexpensive, reliable, and a great option if you also want to connect a Bluetooth headset to your PS5 in future.

Once you have everything ready, the following steps are all you need to hit the ground running:

Step 1: Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your current device.

For Windows users, type “ Bluetooth ” into the search bar and choose “ Bluetooth & other devices ” from the results. From here, make sure the switch for Bluetooth is set to “ On .”

Mac users can similarly head to the Apple Menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and check Bluetooth is currently turned on.

Step 2: Make sure that the player indicator on your DualSense controller is off. This is the light below the touchpad. To turn it off, press and hold the PS button on the bottom-center of the controller until the light goes out.

Step 3: Press and hold the “ Share ” and “ PS ” buttons on your DualSense controller until the lightbar begins to blink.

Step 4: Back on your PC or laptop, click “ Add Bluetooth or other device ” and follow the on screen instructions, or choose the controller from the device list on Mac and click “ Connect. ”

Once pairing is complete, the light bar on the controller will blink and the player indicator will light back up. From here, you should be able to use the DualSense controller in any gamepad supporting title. However, once again, access to advanced features will vary from title to title. Enjoy your gaming!
