Want to Try House Sitting Without Pets (How to Find These Types of Assignments)

You’re interested in house sitting, but don’t love animals.

Can You House Sit Without Pet Sitting?

Yes, you can.

Many people worry about coming home to a flooded house.

Or having a break-in!

Or maybe they have a pool or garden which can’t be left unattended!

What Is House Sitting?

Many homeowners hire house sitters when they travel. These people will take care of the things around the home so that the owners don’t have to worry about them.

They often check the mail, secure the property, and care for furry friends.

Some housesitters do this as a way to get extra money or decrease travel expenses. Others do it full-time and don’t even have their own homes.

To get into the house-sitting business, make an online house sitter profile! You may have to pay an annual membership fee for some websites, but it can be worth it.

Do People Hire House Sitters For Pet-Free Homes?

There are lots of house-sits without pets.

They have several different reasons for this.

It’s Their Second Home

Many people who have second homes will hire someone to stay in their homes.

It gives them peace of mind to know that their house will be in good condition when they return to it.

A lot of people from the UK and the USA have second homes in countries like France, Spain, and Mexico. Since they can’t check on their house every day, they might want someone else to live there part-time.

One cool thing about sitting in second homes: they’re usually luxury houses. People who can afford two homes often have nice homes.

Sitting in one of these perfect houses would increase the quality of your travel plans.

Maintenance

While most houses are okay to be left alone, this isn’t always the case.

If someone has a pool or a garden, they can’t neglect it for days on end. I

Instead of caring for their pets, you will need to devote some time to these chores.

House Plants

Tending to a garden can be overwhelming, but watering houseplants may be a good start.

People who have plants in their homes wouldn’t want them to die while they travel. This is especially true for people who have spent years perfecting their green thumb.

house sitting jobs uk no pets

Pipes Not Freezing

In some places, the pipes are not designed for cold weather.

This means that it might be worth paying someone to let the water run if it gets cold enough.

Other things could go wrong in many homes.

Maybe the air conditioner starts to leak. Maybe a faulty outlet sparks a fire.

These emergencies can be addressed if someone is home. Paying a house sitter ensures that homeowners won’t come home to a disaster.

While many people never worry about home security, other people are very mindful of it.

Some people live in areas with higher crime rates. Other people have nice homes that are appealing to burglars.

By having someone in the house overnight, the chances of a robbery go down.

You may be expected to turn the lights on at night, make sure the alarm system is working, and check the perimeter.

Mail And Package Delivery

Some people get packages daily. Instead of letting these packages sit out, they might pay someone to take them in.

This is also true for important mail. It isn’t always easy to plan the arrival of mail around travel adventures.

Also, people may expect an appliance delivery or repairman. Sometimes these companies get booked up and you can’t plan around your travels.

If that is the case, a homeowner may want someone to be available all week in case the company shows up.

How To Find Pet-Free House Sits

Great article. Are there house sits where we can bring our own dog (beagle)?

Hi Melodye, Thanks for writing in I think it totally depends on the homeowner and their animals.

You will find that on some house-sitting sites, you can apply filters to look for assignments where homeowners allow you to bring your own animals.

Many home owners just want their home to look occupied when they go away. A lived-in house is more secure and deters burglars. A live-in Housesitter can avoid the tell-tale build up of junk mail, and overgrown lawns.

Homeowners also have peace of mind in case of rare events. This could be a burst pipe or an extreme weather event. The house sitter can then keep the homeowner posted and take instructions to avert further problems.

Local stays: the heart of house sitting.

For starters, let’s talk about local stays. No matter where you are in the UK, from the bustling streets of London to the serene countryside, local house sits are a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. When Cooper and I first dived into TrustedHousesitters , we focused on local sits around London. This was more than just a stepping stone; it was a gateway to building a trove of delightful experiences.

Local sits offer a unique chance to explore new neighbourhoods, providing a refreshing change of scenery without straying too far from home. And let’s not forget, it’s a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the local culture, even if it’s just for a weekend. For those of you on TrustedHousesitters , remember, setting up an alert with your availability and preferred location is key.

Embracing Short Term House Sitting Adventures in the UK

Now, onto the short-term sits. These are perfect for those spontaneous getaways or making the most out of holiday seasons like Easter, summer, and Christmas. We’re talking about roughly two weeks of immersing yourself in a new environment. And guess what? You don’t even have to worry about accommodation costs!

Keep your eyes peeled for those daily alerts from TrustedHousesitters . 4 types of house sitting jobs UK (and how to get them)

Long Term: Dive Deep into the Local Vibe

Speaking of new experiences, let’s chat about long-term house sits. As Cooper and I dive deeper into our slow travel ethos, we’ve come to appreciate the value of long-term stays, which we define as over two weeks. These opportunities are not just about having a place to stay; they’re about truly living in a new location and establishing a routine. It’s also about nurturing our digital business in a fresh environment.

In our adventures, we’ve found a rich variety of long-term house sitting jobs UK, from quaint country homes to lively city apartments. Some require a car, but our preference is always for those where we can walk everywhere, just like our memorable stay in Northampton . If you’re considering a long-term sit, it’s vital to ensure the place suits your lifestyle and needs, from transport to local amenities.

House Sitting With or Without Furry Friends

Now, let’s talk about one of the best parts of house sitting – the animals! Cooper and I have an undying love for dogs. But, whether it’s cats, horses, or even reptiles, there’s something incredibly rewarding about caring for pets.

On platforms like TrustedHousesitters, you can filter your search based on the type of animals you’re comfortable with or opt for sits without pets. Just remember, only commit to what you’re experienced in or willing to wholeheartedly embrace.

Local Stays : Ideal for those who prefer staying close to home or exploring new areas within their region. These jobs often involve shorter commitments and can range from weekend stays to a couple of weeks. They are perfect for building a strong local network and understanding different neighbourhoods’ unique characteristics.

Short-Term Assignments : These are typically tied to holiday seasons or specific events. They’re great for experiencing different parts of the UK without the long-term commitment. Short-term sits are often sought after by homeowners going on vacation, offering a perfect way for sitters to enjoy a ‘holiday feel’ in a new location.

In our journey so far, we’ve met some incredible people – both homeowners and fellow sitters. Everyone seems to share the same ethos: a love for animals, a passion for travel, and a kindred spirit of adventure. This community aspect has been a highlight for us, creating connections and friendships that last beyond the duration of a sit.

Quick Guide to House Sitting in London

House sitting—even the name sounds cosy and inviting, doesn’t it? Along with house warming. Unless you’re Steve Martin in the 90s film Housesitter , in which case it’s a terrible idea. Fortunately for all concerned, the name is as literal and welcoming as it sounds.

How does house sitting work?

Unlike the arguably better-known guardianship schemes , you don’t actually pay any form of rent or accommodation fees to house sit in London. Also with house sitting, you will be staying in a residential property, which could be anywhere in London or the Greater London area and quite likely will need to do a bit of pet sitting too.

For example, you could be in a hipster East-London warehouse, a cosy family home, or—based on one instance we heard about—a Tudor mansion!

The flip-side of house sitting in London is that placements can be sporadic, and longer-term opportunities are less common, as more home owners let out their vacant rooms or properties through Airbnb and the like these days. But house sits are out there, if you’re prepared to do a little research, and are flexible on location.

Fulham houses

House sitter Stephanie Ross has been doing stints on and off for upwards of ten years, having stumbled upon it after a year travelling. She found most of her London house sitting opportunities through word of mouth.

“I was being asked to look after people’s dogs, houses, gardens and even fish as well. It worked really well for me, as it meant I had a whole house/flat to myself and it gave me a little bit of independence for one or two weeks, always a good thing when you have had to move back in with your parents”.

Nowadays, there are companies and schemes dedicated to finding house sits in London and just about every other major city in the world.

How to find house sitting jobs London

The fastest way to get going is to sign up to a house-sitting site. The most well-known sites combine house sitting with pet sitting.

The main house sitting website covering London are:

  • TrustedHousesitters
  • House Sitters UK

To get started, you’ll need to sign up as a member, and fill out a sitter profile to get going. House sitting as a single person or with partner are both an option; lots of couples do house sitting together, but check details on the house-sitting sites and individual ads too.

On Trusted Housesitters , members are vetted (pun very much intended). To sign up, you must register, fill out a questionnaire to prove you’re pet-friendly, and you should expect to provide references. Once you’re given the thumbs up, you can reply to ads, and filter by location, duration and animal type. You can apply for house sits in many cities round the world too. One of our Tokyo Cheapo team members uses Trusted Housesitters, and has looked after houses with cats and ferrets (separately).

Christmas Jobs London Petsitting

On MindAHome , the average house sits are between one week and four months, but they also have some for as long as six to twelve months.

Members on both sites can browse adverts and express their interest in a sit. It is also free for members to list their availability, so be proactive and put yourself forward.

Consider offering to pet sit for friends and family too, as a raft of good (but honest) references will help get you further house sits. Once a house sitter is registered, it’s up to the home/pet owner to select the person they feel is suited to the placement.

Does it cost anything to house sit in London?

House sitting assignments are generally free, as you’re providing a service, but there might be some sign-up costs involved. Here’s an estimate of what those might come to:

  • Membership fees: £ 15.00 – £ 99.00 for annual fees.
  • Background checks: £ 25.00 . Some might ask for a basic disclosure doc, which is a criminal background check.
  • References: You can sign up as a newbie, but if possible, offer to house or pet sit for a trusted friend or family member first so you can show some experience.
  • Utilities: House sitters are sometimes expected to contribute towards utilities used during their stay for longer sits, but check in with the homeowner.

It’s always advisable to go through tried-and-tested companies first, but you can check out classified ads on Gumtree too, as well as community groups on social media.

In some instances, house sitting can provide a supplementary income, like cat sitting through CatInAFlat , where you set your rate according to your experience. More on pet sitting below…

Long-term house sitting opportunities

According to House Sitters UK, house sits can vary from 1 day to as long as three years. And with more people working flexibly, longer-term house sitting opportunities have the potential to grow too. Trusted House Sitters also has a dedicated long-term house & pet sitting section too, and Mind A Home also has longer term house sits too.

House Sitting without pets

Most house sitting involves pet sitting of some kind, but if you’re allergic to pet fur or not much of an animal lover, there are some options for you. One option is to sign up to a listing site like House Carers.com or register for alerts as they’re posted. Alternatively, Trusted House Sitters, Mind A Home and House Sitters UK all have a ‘no pets’ filter, but expect fewer results.

Can you earn money from house sitting jobs in London?

Most house sitting sites don’t pay for sitters, they’re set up on the principle of free accommodation in exchange for looking after the property and/or the pets that live there.

Some sites will allow people to set small fees on their profiles, but to make money from house sitting in London takes a bit more work, and registering your services as self-employed on sites like Bark.Com (where sitters set their rate and earn between £ 50.00 – £ 200.00 a day). Alternatively, look for high-end or luxury house sitting sites where owners might be looking for pro house sitters.

Earn money pet sitting in London

It’s a bit easier to make a bit of cash on the side from pet sitting than house sitting, particularly when it comes to caring for cats and dogs. It can be a good source of supplementary income if you live in London, you can sign up to be a cat sitter with Cat In A Flat for free and set rates according to your experience, or if you want to look after dogs and cats, try Rover.com . The latter also covers dog walking and doggy day care too, but this guide will focus on pet sitting tasks.

Pet sitting typically falls into three main categories:

  • Drop in visits (for daytime feeding and fussing)
  • House Sitting / Overnight stays
  • Boarding (The pet stays overnight in the sitters home)

How much can I earn from Pet Sitting in London?

Rates depend on a few variables, from your level of experience to the complexity of care required and the length of the assignment. (for example, the size of the pet, multiple pets, health issues). But, for example on Cat in A Flat a drop in/1 day visit rate is around £ 10.00 with overnight stays around £ 15.00 – £ 20.00 per night. Over on Rover.Com, rates range from £ 25.00 to £ 150.00 per night for house sitting (although most are between the £ 25.00 – £ 50.00 mark) and single drop-in day visits are listed between £ 12.00 – £ 20.00 .

Getting set up as a Pet Sitter

  • Register with a site like Cat in a Flat or Rover.Com.
  • Complete the site’s verification process (and provide references from previous pet owners)
  • Set up a profile and add your rates.

House Sitting helps you get to know the city

When moving to a huge city like London, it can be daunting to pin down a neighbourhood you like. House sitting can give you the chance to explore different areas before you commit to one.

“I love variety and trying new things, so [house sitting] also gave me the opportunity to explore new areas. And the [people I sat for] obviously benefitted from the reassurance that someone was making the property look lived in, and caring for their animals too.” Stephanie Ross, house sitter.

House sitting also gives you some valuable money-saving time and a bit of breathing space to find the right place. By taking short-term assignments, you can take your time to find suitable longer term-flat or house shares in London, and of course save for those deposit and admin fees.

Tips for successful house sitting in London

As with property guardianship, there is a central responsibility in exchange for the accommodation, in this case, pet sitting, and other light household duties like watering plants.

Each advert will stipulate the terms and conditions, which are relatively standard (dog walks, feedings, cleaning out litter trays) but some pet owners have their quirks. One advert we saw included ‘sending cat reports’; presumably, this was just meant to be the odd text or email to reassure the owner that the little fluffball was purring happily, and not a full typed report to be Fedexed.

Jokes aside, updates are not an unreasonable request, and you can have some fun with Pet Skype/Zoom etc, but it might be tricky if you’re looking after an aviary or tropical fish.

London housesitting

Use Storage Space If You’re on the move a lot

You’re likely to be on the move every couple of weeks, so it’s ideal if you’re living out of a suitcase, and don’t have furniture—or you might have to fork out for storage space, which can be expensive. You could be lugging your stuff across town at regular intervals, but you have the bonus of space, and utilities, comfort and privacy from not having to share with others.

House sitting might also be a great alternative to the responsibilities and restrictions of full-time pet care. Most rental properties in London don’t allow pets, and pet care can be costly, so this is an alternative that goes a step further than the very successful Borrow My Doggy scheme, which matches pet owners to volunteer dog walkers.

Pro tip: London’s birds and expensive fish don’t mix, as Stephanie Ross discovered.

“Another homeowner had a pond full of very expensive koi fish, which I had to care for. One day, I happened to be walking past the window to see a heron sat by the pond with one of the poor fish flapping in its mouth. I tried to scare it into dropping its catch but the heron flew off with the fish …. They were really good about it and soon invested in a heron net to go over the pond so it didn’t happen again.”

When are people looking for house sitters

Timing is pretty critical: holiday and travel seasons (Christmas, spring, summer) are likely to be best for assignments, but bear in mind there might also be more people signing up, or travelling to London at these times, so you’ll have more competition. Keep an eye glued to your inbox, if you’re signed up, so you don’t miss opportunity alerts. Also, keep an eye out for professionals who might travel abroad at regular intervals; if you strike up a trusted exchange, it could open up a regular return gig.

Flexibility is favourable too. The more flexible you can be with dates and locations, the more options you will have. Some might be a little further out, in the suburbs so bear that in mind if you’re looking to keep commute costs and times down.

House Sitter etiquette

Most sites have FAQs and tips on how to be a good house sitter. Most of it is just common sense and good manners. For example, they suggest leaving the fridge stocked for the homeowner’s return, and you might be on the receiving end of a welcome pack and some edible treats too.

It may not be purr-fect for everyone, and it’s not the key to long-term accommodation security, but if you’re making your way on the move, and want to sample London life in different neighbourhoods, house-sitting could be a great option for saving cash.

House-Sitting in London: All the Best Options for Finding a Place to Take Care of as if It Was Your Own

House-Sitting in London: All the Best Options for Finding a Place to Take Care of as if It Was Your Own

Love This? Save and Share!

Our guide to the top house-sitting platforms for finding London house-sitting jobs.

Out of a house for a short time? Coming to London on holiday? Perhaps you’re off on a trip and want someone to take care of the manor while you’re gone. Whatever your reasons, house-sitting is becoming more and more popular in London.

There are now a bunch of sites dedicated to putting house-sitters together with people who’ve got empty houses that need taking care of. It can be a bit of a nightmare to navigate them all (not to mention a daunting thought to stay in someone else’s house) so we put together a guide of the best and most reliable sites for finding house-sitting jobs.

Oh, and we threw in a couple of top tips for first-timers (you can find those at the bottom). Read on for your way into the London house-sitting market.

Best Places to Find House-Sitting Assignments in London

Trusted housesitters .

House-Sitting

Trusted Housesitters is one of the most highly recommended platforms for finding house-sitting jobs in London. Check out their website and it’s no surprise why. The page reads as much like an Airbnb listing as it does a directory.

You’ll find plenty of lovely places just by scrolling through, but you can also change your parameters to include different types of property, location, whether you want to sit for pets or just the house, and so on.

We should add that these guys have some truly lovely houses on their site – Some of them nicer than we’d ever expect to live in unless we strike it big on the lottery.

House Sitters UK

House-Sitting

House Sitters UK is another great platform for finding the best house-sitting London has to offer. Their site is a little less intuitive to navigate than some of the others in our guide but so long as you have an iota of online smarts it won’t be an issue.

They offer options for both sides of the house-sitting market – people looking for sitters, and sitters looking for houses. They also have options for cat and dog sitters should you fancy taking care of a four-legged companion on your stay.

There is a monthly joining fee of £29 for sitters but they have an enormous database of houses and pets so you can see it as a worthwhile investment, especially if you consider the price of rent or hotels in London.

House-Sitting

Pawshake is a great website that allows local pet and house sitters to advertise themselves in one place. You can’t advertise your houses on the site, and you can’t search for jobs but if you are in London regularly or permanently and looking for these kinds of gigs, having a profile at Pawshake is never a bad idea.

From the name Pawshake you might expect this site to lean more toward the pet-sitting crowd, and it does, but they still have a section dedicated to plain house-sitting if that’s what you’re after.

Mind a Home

House-Sitting

Mind a Home offers house and pet-sitting services across the UK with plenty of nice options in London. On top of this, they’ve got an easy-to-navigate site with tons of information and FAQs for anyone who’s just getting started in the house-sitting business.

You can find both sitters and houses to sit. The house sitters have to pay a £15 annual charge for using the service but for people looking to find sitters, the service is free.

There’s also a great function on Mind a Home that allows you to select the property type you want. Fancy posting up in a nice central London flat? You can do just that. Prefer to do your house sitting in a gorgeous townhouse? You can narrow your search that way too.

House-Sitting

Yep, of course. Reddit – if you want something from the internet, it can almost invariably be found here. That’s no different for house-sitting jobs either.

The Reddit house-sitting forum is a good place to start. You’ll have to trawl through lots of other information on house-sitting (much of which is worth a read for first-time sitters) but you can find some nice options if you dig about.

You should also try hitting a few keywords into the search bar – just treat it as you would a Google search and you’ll find a few other listings.

Mind My House

House-Sitting

Mind My House is another major platform for people looking to find house-sitting jobs or house-sitters. They host ads and listings on a global scale, with plenty of properties on offer in London.

The annual sign-up fee for house-sitters is slightly higher than the others in our guide at US$29 per year, but it can be worth coughing up a bit extra for when you consider the options on offer.

Another major bonus about Mind My House is that they run a 24-hour helpline should anything go wrong with your house-sitting gig. Given that a problem in that field could mean you going without a roof over your head, round-the-clock assistance is something you don’t want to underestimate the importance of.

House Carers

House-Sitting

House Carers is a smaller platform and as such doesn’t have so many London listings. We do, however, firmly believe that in pursuit of good houses to sit, no stone should be left unturned, and in that honour we’re going to include it in our guide.

Even if you don’t find any house-sitting opportunities on the site, they do have a great blog all about house-sitting. They’ve covered pretty much every aspect of the service and you can find some really useful information there should you need it.

Practical Tips for House Sitting in London

  • Be wary of scams. We’ve purposely only included reliable places to find house-sitting jobs, but this is the internet after all and there are plenty of people looking to take advantage of others. Don’t send any money to people unless you’re sure they’re real and never give out your bank details.
  • Some house-sitting jobs will require you to take care of pets too. Be sure that you’re comfortable with any animals you might have to take care of. If you don’t want any pets around, there are options to reflect that in your search.
  • Some house-sitting jobs are paid and others aren’t. Obviously the paid work is harder to get and to charge a premium you’ll need lots of provable experience.
  • You’re there to look after the house remember. That means you can’t leave it in a tip like you did that Airbnb on last summer’s trip to Ibiza.

How to Become a House Sitter (Find Long-Term Sitting Jobs)

Man sitting on a blue couch reading a book while working a wanted house and pet sitting job near Denver, Colorado

Once you’ve learned how to become a house sitter and landed your first long-term job, it might all seem too good to be true. You may just feel like you’ve stumbled upon a secret travel cheat code or struck the cash-strapped traveler lottery. Feelings like these are bound to bubble up from time to time.

After all, relaxing in cozy homes and living completely rent-free isn’t a reality many of us budget-conscious travelers thought possible. Traveling the world frequently and lounging around in top-notch properties is a lifestyle reserved for the rich and famous, right?

Not so fast.

Over the years, my partner and I have enjoyed long-term house sitting jobs both near and far, even when we’ve been dang near broke.

Our duties are simple: take care of pets, water plants, collect mail, and keep homes occupied while the owners are out of town. The hosts get to travel knowing that their home is in good hands, and we I get to live rent-free and see the world on the cheap. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

And our modest experience is mild compared to some of the more ambitious sitters out there. Some clever digital nomads and retirees have embraced house sitting as their full-time lifestyle. They bounce around the world during the summer, winter, and every season in between as they watch over homes, pets, and plants. And they travel for next to nothing along the way.

So, whether you want to house sit occasionally like us or dive in headfirst and become a long-term professional sitter, you’re in the right place. This step-by-step guide is full of all the tips, resources, and websites you’ll need to become a bonafide sitter and land your first job right away.

Let’s dive in.

How to become a house sitter in 2023: 11-step guide.

A cat extending towards a home's window into a backyard during a long-term sit

If you’d like to know how to become a house sitter and land long-term sitting jobs ASAP, you’ve come to the right place. We have pursued countless jobs over the years and, though we don’t land every gig we apply for, we’re more or less experts when it comes to the process.

As a result, I’ve put together a guide that I think will give you the best chance at success possible.

Now, let’s get started.

1. Fit the Mold of a Long-Term House Sitting Professional

If your goal is to become an in-demand house and pet sitter, you must first play the part.

The transient and unpredictable nature of home sitting doesn’t suit everyone, so make sure you’re cut out for the lifestyle before you start firing off applications for jobs.

You may be a good house and pet sitter if you:

  • have experience caring for dogs and cats
  • can embrace the ups and downs of travel
  • have a flexible schedule
  • work remotely, are financially independent, or have a job near your sit
  • can afford the occasional hotel or Airbnb
  • are comfortable in someone else’s home
  • don’t have a criminal history
  • are a good communicator

If the above characteristics describe you, keep reading. You might just have what it takes to cut the mustard as a house sitting professional.

2. Sign Up for a House Sitting Website

It ain’t the 90s anymore, so don’t go thinking you’ll find long-term house sitting jobs in the back page ads of the local newspaper. No, you’ll need to stare into the glow of your favorite device religiously if you want to find a proper gig.

We use a service called TrustedHousesitters , which has worked out very well for us.

Their website and app are both fantastic, they offer loads of jobs in over 110 countries, and everyone on the site is vetted and verified. Not to mention, it’s the most widely-used house and pet sitting website in the world.

You can browse through TrustedHousesitter’s job opportunities for free, but ultimately you’ll need to become a paid member to apply for sits. Memberships start at $129 but should pay for themselves after a night or two of free accommodation at your first gig.

💥 TrustedHousesitters is offering The Packable Life readers 20% off new memberships! Click the button below for your discount. 💥

3. Polish Your Resume & Drum Up Past References

Screenshot of TrustedHousesitters website application saying "____ has asked you to provide a reference"

Things start to get real after you’ve signed up for a house sitting website.

It’s now time to get laser-focused in your search for home and pet sitting jobs, as there’s always plenty of competition for the more extended gigs. Some of these listings will have dozens of applicants, so you’d better learn how to set yourself apart with a stellar application if you want to land the best sitting jobs.

Here are the first two things you can do to start getting a leg up on the competition:

Put together a rock-solid resume . Many potential hosts will want to see your past work experience and long-term sitting gigs before they let you live in their home and take care of their beloved pets.

Reach out to friends, family, landlords, and past sitters for references . Potential house sitting hosts are far more likely to let you live in their homes if others gush about how incredible you are.

4. Create a Rock-Solid House Sitting Profile

Your profile is really important.

It’s your first impression to all of the hosts that are going to consider letting you live in their home. Think of your profile as posting your resume for dozens of potential employers to nitpick before they ever have a chance to speak to you.

Hosts will read your profile carefully, and they’re going to judge you instantly. Invest time into making a professional profile or risk missing out on great opportunities.

Here’s what you should focus on:

  • A profile picture that captures your personality
  • Lots of pictures of you (and pets!) so owners can visualize you with their animals
  • A well-edited introduction to yourself, broken down into easy-to-read paragraphs

5. Search for Jobs in Your Desired Locales

Once your profile is impeccable and your references have started to trickle in, it’s time to start going after incredible live-in house sitting opportunities.

Whether you’re interested in visiting Hawaii, California, NYC, Italy, Australia, Japan, or any other desirable destination, use TrustedHousesitter’s search feature to start browsing through jobs. When an intriguing listing presents itself, click the heart icon to save it to your favorites list.

6. Apply for Vacancies Where You’re a Good Fit

Screenshot of a TrustedHousesitters summer application in Princeville, Hawaii that says "Pet loving house sitter needed. Must like to cuddle."

Finding incredible live-in house sitting opportunities is exciting; I get it! But it’s imperative not to rush when applying for jobs. Always put plenty of time and effort into your application before you send it through, as you’ll often be competing with other highly-motivated folks for the job.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when putting together an application:

Reference the Listing : Reference their owner’s listing several times throughout your application. Mention their pets by name. Tell them that you love the restaurants, parks, and cafes around their neighborhood.

Be Yourself : Mention a few unique things about yourself that you may not have covered in your profile. Did you recently have a meaningful house watching experience? Are you obsessed with playing cribbage? Are you a certified scuba diver? Great! Thoughtful details like these might just be a valuable conversation starter between you and your host.

Be Honest : Let hosts know if you’ve also applied to other listings. They’ll appreciate your honesty and shouldn’t get too irked if you end up withdrawing your application for another opportunity. They might also be more motivated to hire you if they’re afraid another host will scoop you up before they can.

Edit Your Application : Look over your application and edit it before clicking send. This is important! Hosts want to see that you’re taking their posting seriously and might view applications with typos and grammatical errors as lazy or rushed.

7. Stay Proactive & Confident With Your Leads

When hosts are intrigued by your application, they’ll open up a conversation to see if you’re a solid lead. They have fast-approaching travel plans, so reply to their messages quickly and professionally. It’s a good look.

If you haven’t heard back from a host for a day or two after you’ve sent your application, shoot them a thoughtful follow-up message. Reiterate why you’re an excellent fit for their listing and how motivated you are to set up an interview. Let the hosts know you mean business.

8. Prepare for (and Ace) Your House Sitting Interview

If you’ve nailed the first seven steps of this article, I have some good news: you’re going to get interviewed for many of those tasty long-term sitting jobs you’ve been dreaming about.

Here’s how to prepare for (and ace) your interview:

Do Your Research : Read the listing several times and jot down helpful notes about the gig beforehand. Hosts are sensitive about their beloved home and precious pets, so memorize the vital information. You wouldn’t dare call their sweet Moose the wrong name, would you?

Ask Lots of Questions : Make a list of questions about the listing and sprinkle them into your conversation with the host. Asking well-informed questions lets the interviewer know that you did your research and care about the finer details of the opportunity.

Sell Yourself : Be open, honest, and give the host a chance to know you during the interview. Offer up fun details about your life and let your personality shine through. Tell the host about your strengths, passions, past travel experiences, and future goals.

Eliminate Any Doubts : What’s your plan if a pet gets sick? Are you prepared to navigate the home security system every time you come and go? How often will you check the mail? What if a pipe bursts?

9. Sort Out the Logistics of Your Sit

Man on a laptop with his hand extended on his chin as he books long-term sitting plans

Let’s say your interview went well, and you landed the gig. Well done! Now, get to work sorting out the logistics of your sit.

Arrange transportation to your gig, and clear your schedule for the dates you’ve committed to. If you’re traveling for an international sit, get your visas sorted out as soon as possible. Hosts are relying on you to show up prepared and on time so that they can embark on their trip worry-free.

10. Reassure Homeowners & Keep Them Posted

Once you’ve arrived at your house sitting gig and the hosts are out the door, it’s your job to hold down the fort. Barring any crazy circumstances, keeping on top of your duties shouldn’t be too hard. Do your job, do it well, and keep the hosts in the loop when they’re away.

11. Crush Your Assignments & Collect Great Reviews

If you’ve nailed steps 1-10, you’re likely going to ace your house watching assignment. It’s not too tough to live in a stranger’s home, follow their instructions, and keep their beloved pets happy and healthy. Easy, right?

Once you’ve completed your successful sit, tell the hosts how grateful you were for the opportunity and encourage them to reach out to you next time they need help. Answer any questions they have and always leave on good terms.

The 7 Best House Sitting Websites of 2023

A collage of five different screenshots of the homescreens of international house sitting websites

As I mentioned earlier, my favorite platform for finding jobs is TrustedHousesitters .

If TrustedHousesitters isn’t quite your style, don’t worry, as there are plenty of other great websites to find your dream job. Here are the seven best house sitting websites of 2023.

TrustedHousesitters

TrustedHousesitters is the best website to consistently find gigs, whether short or long-term, internationally or locally. They boast a 4.7 rating with over 14,000 reviews on TrustPilot.com. They’re as legit as it gets when finding sitting jobs.

As I write this, TrustedHousesitters has thousands of active job postings listed in over 110 countries. Travelers consistently land incredible long-term sitting jobs via TrustedHousesitters, and it’s viewed as the go-to website in the industry.

In terms of job volume, user interface, and features, it simply doesn’t get better than TrustedHousesitters.

House Sitters America

If you’re trying to find a sitting job in the US and aren’t having luck on TrustedHousesitters, give House Sitters America a look. They’re a US-specific site that costs only $49 a year to become a member but offers fewer opportunities than TrustedHousesitters.

Though I’m bummed they don’t list international jobs, I love that House Sitters America offers PAID sitting jobs. Though most gigs you’ll find are free, it’s not rare to find paid jobs for $20+ a day. If you happen to land a long-term job, those daily earnings could add up quickly.

HouseSitMatch

If you’re looking for a sitting opportunity in the UK, Ireland, France, or Spain, you might just find it on HouseSitMatch. The site gets plenty of glowing testimonials from users on TrustPilot and is a solid option if you’re looking to bounce around Europe watching people’s homes and caring for their pets.

While the HouseSitMatch website isn’t the easiest to navigate, it has loads of character and a very active blog. Not to mention, there are plenty of fresh listings and opportunities for rewarding extended sits on the site. Membership costs £69 for a standard account or £89 for a premium account .

Nomador offers a decent amount of international house and pet sitting jobs and is one of the more popular options around. At $99 a year, membership costs less than TrustedHousesitters, though you’re not going to find nearly as many opportunities.

Nomador also offers the ‘Nomador Stopover’ feature, which connects users with homeowners willing to host travelers for a night (or more). This feature is similar to Couchsurfing , which is a great way to travel around the world cheaply if you’re comfortable crashing at a stranger’s home (while they’re still around).

MindMyHouse

MindMyHouse is another solid option for finding international gigs, though listings aren’t as abundant as TrustedHousesitters or Nomador. That said, interesting sits do still exist on MindMyHouse, and there’s not usually a ton of competition to land a job.

At $20 a year, MindMyHouse is a very affordable platform, however, I only see 211 total listings worldwide at the time of writing this article. That said, it never hurts to browse their site and see what’s out there. You might just find the dream sit you’ve been looking for.

HouseCarers

Established in 2000, HouseCarers is the oldest worldwide home sitting website on the internet and has connected thousands of travelers with incredible opportunities over the years. Check out their fun archive of blog posts to get a feel for the type of sitters their platform attracts.

HouseCarers doesn’t have a ton of listings — only 68 total at the time of writing — but should offer less competition than sites like TrustedHousesitters or Nomador. If you’re striking out on other websites, HouseCarers is certainly worth a look.

Workaway isn’t a house watching specific platform but does offer opportunities to work in exchange for lodging, food, and (sometimes) a paid allowance. Workawayers can help with tasks like building homes, helping out on farms, nannying, and more.

I know a friend who strung together a few incredible Workaway opportunities in Europe and was able to bounce around the continent on the cheap for an entire summer. Though I’ve never tried it myself, I wish I’d tried out Workaway in my younger years when I was broke.

FAQs About House Sitting

A clean kitchen with white cabinets and black appliances stocked with fresh fruit

House sitting, whether near or far, short or long-term, is a unique way of traveling that not everyone is familiar with. Hopefully, this section clears up any questions you might have as you entertain the possibility of becoming a top-notch sitter. Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions about my personal experience.

How Long Do House Sitting Jobs Usually Last?

While shorter house sitting jobs can last only a day or two, some long-term opportunities can last up to several months. In my experience, most gigs last between a few days and a couple of weeks.

The longer the duration of the listing, the more desirable it will be to others. Expect the competition to ramp up as the length of the potential sit increases, especially if the gig is in a high-demand area.

What does a House Sitter Do? What are Their Typical Responsibilities?

Sitters are expected to maintain the property while the host is out of town and will almost always have a pet or two (or more!) to take care of, as well.

Here are a few of the typical tasks hosts will ask of house sitters:

  • Feed, exercise, administer medication to, and spend time with pets
  • Collect mail and receive deliveries
  • Water plants and perform basic yard maintenance
  • Spend significant time at the property to decrease the risk of break-ins
  • Communicate with and relay important information to the homeowner

Most House Sitting Jobs I’m Finding Aren’t Paid. Why Not?

Watching someone’s home is a mutually beneficial exchange. Hosts offer up their homes to sitters in exchange for pet caretaking, house maintenance, and peace of mind while they’re out of town. Everyone wins.

‘Payment’ comes in the form of free accommodation, food, and future opportunities, and money usually isn’t involved. Paid jobs do exist, though, but are quite competitive and usually reserved for ‘professional’ house sitters or retirees who have years of experience and can take on specialized duties.

Can I Make a Living as a Professional House Sitter?

While it’s pretty easy to travel on the cheap as full-time as a house sitter, earning a full-time salary as a professional a different story. As I just mentioned, well-paying opportunities exist, but they’re usually very competitive and almost always include many responsibilities.

That said, if you set your mind to it, you could carve out a career for yourself as a professional house sitter. Start with free sits, collect excellent references, build a top-notch resume, and start searching for those dream long-term (or even full-time!) luxury jobs that pay a generous salary.

What are Some of the Drawbacks of House Sitting?

While extended home sitting is generally a rewarding line of work, there are a few potential downsides to consider before you get involved.

House sitting isn’t exactly lucrative , so you’ll need another source of income if you plan on staying in other people’s houses regularly. I earn income from my blog while working remotely, allowing me to home sit wherever I want, whenever I want.

You’ll be bound to the home to keep things running smoothly until the owners return . You’re more or less ‘stuck’ at the property once the owners leave town, which could be an issue if an unexpected event in your life demands your attention.

You’ll never feel 100% at home at someone else’s property . Sleeping in somebody else’s bed and taking care of their household isn’t always comfortable. Frequent travelers are probably used to this lifestyle, but it’s still something to keep in mind.

Hosts can get a little weird on occasion. Though I’ve experienced nothing but friendly and grateful hosts, I’ve heard stories of impossible-to-please homeowners who’ve made life very difficult for their sitters from afar. Hosts like this are rare, but they do exist.

Ready to Become a House Sitter & Find Long-Term Jobs?

A pet dog living rent free, sitting and watching near an open front door of a home

Hopefully, you understand exactly what it takes to become a house sitter that locks down long-term jobs , takes care of incredible properties, and travels the world affordably. If you can pull this lifestyle off, you’ll certainly feel as though you’ve unlocked a powerful travel cheat code.

All it takes is one successful sit to realize that frequent travel to new destinations isn’t only reserved for the rich and the privileged. We budget travelers can also kick our heels up and live a life of luxury (even if we have to watch a stranger’s dog and mow their lawn a few times along the way).

As wild as it may seem, people are willing to open up their doors, hand their keys to a stranger, and welcome them in their homes for weeks, sometimes months , at a time. Myself, and countless other successful house sitters are living proof.

Learning how to become a house sitter and landing long-term jobs is quite simple. Read this guide, follow the steps carefully, and you’ll be rewarded with opportunities to travel longer and more affordably than you may have ever imagined.

Matching House Sitters and Home Owners across the United Kingdom quickly and easily

Benefits

For Home Owners

Mindahome House Sitters are the best you'll find - and you're in complete control of screening and appointing them. And because many House Sitters treat this as a regular job, they're motivated to do the best they can with an eye to future placements with you or someone you recommend them to. You can count on a pool of motivated House Sitters who are trustworthy and reliable.

A happy pet means a happy owner. And pets are always happier and more comfortable in their own home instead of some strange kennel. Their own bed, their favourite toys, all the familiar sights and smells. All they need is a pet-loving House Sitter to provide companionship and exercise while you're away.

You're on holiday - the last thing you need is worry. So enjoy peace of mind, comfortable in the knowledge that everything at home is in capable hands. Your pets are well cared for with regular close human contact. Plants are watered, mail collected and garden is tidy. The place is lived in, your House Sitter providing security for your property and possessions simply by being there.

Pet boarding can get expensive, especially for longer absences. With a House Sitter, though, your pets stay in the comfort of their own home and it doesn't cost you a penny.

For House Sitters

Think of all those places around the United Kingdom you've always wanted to visit and explore. Now imagine staying there, free of charge. In cities and regions across the United Kingdom, house sitting does away with the cost of hotel or motel accommodation.

With the money you save by house sitting, you can really immerse yourself in the community and surrounds. Explore the area, participate in local activities, and experience life like a local - something the average tourist rarely gets to experience. As a house sitter, your time is your own.

Even if you don't have your own pet doesn't mean you can’t indulge your love for animals. House Sitters get to choose jobs that include pet sitting for everything from puppies to snakes - which also gives you a much broader choice of homes to sit.

House Sitters often choose the lifestyle as a smart way to save money. By not paying rent, many save for a deposit on their own home, for a new car, or that dream overseas holiday. Whatever the reason, house sitting is a great way to have extra cash.
