Angelica Varela :

The black-footed ferrets prey on prairie dogs so it was once thought that elimination programs for the dogs, considered a nuisance to farmers and ranchers, were impacting the ferret population. Now, there was a concerted effort by the state to rebuild the black-footed ferret population. On a recent day, volunteers made their way to small-town Seligman and met for training on the first night inside a rented home in a rural neighborhood that Arizona Game and Fish uses for the operation. One of those volunteers is Robert Coonrod, who bought a pick-up truck and rigged it with overhead lights specifically for the night-time searches. Robert Coonrod has been volunteering for five years. Though hes not a biologist, he enjoys helping out wildlife and found a new photography hobby while volunteering. HUNTERS TURN TO HIPSTERS TO HELP BOOST SPORTS DECLINING NUMBERS One of the volunteers is Robert Coonrod, who bought a pick-up truck and rigged it with overhead lights specifically for the night-time searches. ( Fox News) Were looking for a ferret to be outside his hole. We drive down, he gets curious, looks at the lights, you see the green eyes shine, and then its off to the races, Robert Coonrod said. Once the animalis spotted, volunteers run towardit and set up a trap. But they have to first hopscotch around prairie dog burrows that dot the landscape. Sometimes it can be very entertaining watching people run across a prairie dog colony because youre so focused on the ferret that you forget about all these holes on the ground, Holly Hicks said. Yeah, every one of us has tripped and fallen in a prairie dog hole after chasing after a ferret. ARIZONA MAN PICKED UP NEWBORN FAWN, TOOK IT TO LOCAL BAR, OFFICIALS SAY With freezing temperates on the first night of the search, around 10 of the volunteers showed up, including Arizona State Univerisity biology graduate Angelica Varela, who will soon be starting an internship with Bird Conservancy of the Rockies. Angelica Varela drove up from Phoenix with Angelica Varela friend, Brandi Kapos, who is an Olive Garden waitress and an Arizona State Univerisity conservation biology graduate. Shes looking to return to school to get a masters degree in Geographic Information Systems. Before Angelica Varela and Brandi Kapos got their assignment from Jennifer Cordova for the night, they said they had energy drinks and candy. Angelica Varela said Angelica Varela was pumped. ( Fox News) Jennifer Cordova said the goal is to get the black-footed ferret off the endangered species list. Fox News important because wildlife dont have a say -- theydont have a voice out there, Holly Hicks said. So, its people like us who manage and try to keep that voice out there and people aware. Our passion comes from a lot of places. We love animals. We want to see wildlife in the future for future generations. Only found in North America, this wild animal differs from the European pet ferrets that are domesticated. The black-footed ferret was once thought extinct until 18 were found in 1981. Since then, recovery and breeding efforts have helped the black-footed ferret population grow. I kind of feel like its our duty.

The Jason Rantz Show, 3pm-7pm on KTTH

Students in a Seattle English class were told that their love of reading and writing is a characteristic of “white supremacy,” in the latest Seattle Public Schools high school controversy. The lesson plan has one local father speaking out, calling it “educational malpractice.”

As part of the Black Lives Matter at School Week, World Literature and Composition students at Lincoln High School were given a handout with definitions of the “9 characteristics of white supremacy,” according to the father of a student. Given the subject matter of the class, the father found it odd this particular lesson was brought up.

The Seattle high schoolers were told that “Worship of the Written Word” is white supremacy because it is “an erasure of the wide range of ways we communicate with each other.” By this definition, the very subject of World Literature and Composition is racist. It also chides the idea that we hyper-value written communication because it’s a form of “honoring only what is written and even then only what is written to a narrow standard, full of misinformation and lies.” The worksheet does not provide any context for what it actually means.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” the father explained to the Jason Rantz Show on KTTH.

Everything is ‘white supremacy’ at Seattle Public Schools

The father asked to remain anonymous for fear of retribution against his child by Seattle Public Schools. He said the other pieces of the worksheet were equally disturbing.

The worksheet labels “objectivity,” “individualism,” and “perfectionism” as white supremacy. If students deny their own racism — or that any of the nine characteristics are legitimately racist — is also white supremacy. Denialism or being overly defensive is a racist example of an “entitlement to name what is an [sic] isn’t racism and that those with power have a right to be shielded from the stresses of antiracist work.”

The father argues the concepts are “incoherent and cannot stand any sort of reasoned analysis.” And he notes that it’s set up to ensure students accept every concept without ever questioning the claims.

“How is a 15-year-old kid supposed to object in class when ‘denial and defensiveness’ is itself a characteristic of white supremacy? This is truly educational malpractice.”

White students told to apologize in yet another Seattle high school controversy

Another aspect of the white supremacy lesson at this Seattle school involved a video titled “Getting Called Out: How to Apologize” by Franchesca Ramsey. It’s reportedly presented in the context of white students expressing what the teacher views as “white supremacy.”

“Getting called out, in this context of this video, is when you say or do something that upholds the oppression of a marginalized group of people,” Ramsey says.

Ramsey says her advice is about becoming an ally and “doing the right thing.” She explains you shouldn’t “get defensive” by denying you’re oppressing marginalized people, even if you’re not actually oppressing marginalized people.

“What you really need to do is listen because this is where the other person is hopefully going to explain to you what you did wrong and how you can explain it,” she says.

In the context of the worksheet on white supremacy, it seems clear that students must merely accept that they are upholding oppression. Using the worksheet, if a student defends independence or a love of reading and writing, that student is supposed to accept that it’s white supremacist thinking and stop acting independently or loving to read and write.

Father says Seattle Public Schools isn’t serving students

The father says he taught his son to be on the lookout for this kind of Radical Left indoctrination. It’s why his son flagged the worksheets to him. But he notes that the curriculum doesn’t exactly help his kid on the subject he’s supposed to be learning.

“My problem with this curriculum is that this is supposed to be a writing and literature class and lessons like these do nothing to help my kid become a better writer,” the father explained. “I’m sure Lincoln administration will point to the high ELA proficiency scores but the high proportion of HCC [highly capable] kids (40% of the student body) is a big factor. With so many smart, hard working kids (white supremacists) it’s easy to support these luxury beliefs but system-wide only 63% of kids are proficient in English. Is this really the best use of class time? ”

The father also wonders how many students will fall for this toxic thinking across Seattle schools where concepts around white supremacy are so clearly partisan.

“I feel bad for any students who actually internalize stuff like this as it is setting them up for failure,” he said.

Seattle Public Schools spokespeople provided their normal response to requests for comment: none.

Ruby Franke sentenced in child abuse case

Former family vlogger Ruby Franke was sentenced to four one-to-15 year terms in prison by a Utah district court on Tuesday, ending a monthslong child abuse case brought against the mother of six.

Franke’s business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, was also sentenced to four one-to-15 year prison terms on Tuesday. Both women will serve their sentences consecutively.

According to Utah law, the maximum aggregate sentence for consecutive terms is 30 years. The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole will determine how long Franke and Hildebrandt will be incarcerated.

During the sentencing hearing, audio of which was streamed on Utah Court's website, Franke teared up while apologizing to her kids.

Ruby Franke during a hearing on Feb. 20, 2024 in St. George, Utah.

“I ... believed dark was light and right was wrong," she said. "I would do anything in this world for you. I took from you all that was soft, and safe and good."

She also addressed Judge John Walton and the courtroom.

“For the past four years, I’ve chosen to follow counsel and guidance that has led me into a dark delusion," she said. "My distorted version of reality went largely unchecked as I would isolate from anyone who challenged me.”

Franke and Hildebrandt pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree aggravated child abuse in December, several months after being charged with  six counts of felony child abuse . Franke previously agreed to testify against Hildebrandt in exchange for the county attorney's neutrality in future hearings with the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole.

The two were arrested in August 2023 after police found one of Franke’s sons emaciated with open wounds and bound with duct tape. He had escaped Hildebrandt’s home to a neighbor’s house. One of Franke’s daughters was found in a similar malnourished condition in Hildebrandt’s home.

Ruby Franke, right, and business partner, Jodi Hildebrandt, speaks during an Instagram video posted to their @moms_of_truth account.

Hildebrandt also gave a brief statement to the court on Tuesday.

“I desire for [the children] to heal physically and emotionally," she said. "One of the reasons I did not go to trial is because I did not want them to emotionally relive the experience which would have been detrimental to them. My hope and prayer is that they will heal and move forward to have beautiful lives.”

During Hildebrandt’s sentencing, Eric Clarke, the Washington County attorney, said that she showed “little to no remorse” and that she “repeatedly claimed that she is the victim and the children are the perpetrators.” He also called Hildebrandt a “significant threat to the community.”

“It could be argued that Miss Franke should receive a lesser sentence than Miss Hildebrandt because of her more recent willingness to cooperate with the state,” Clarke said.

Attorneys for Hildebrandt and Franke did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday.

Jodi Hildabrandt during a hearing on Feb. 20, 2024 in St. George, Utah.

While Franke is not an A-list celebrity, her case has become a public spectacle . Some online commentators said they feel it has helped bring renewed attention to a dark underside of family vlogging channels.

Franke, her husband, Kevin Franke, and their six children rose to prominence on YouTube, where they had amassed 2.3 million subscribers to their now-defunct channel, "8 Passengers." Franke also frequently collaborated on controversial parenting and relationship advice videos with Hildebrandt.

The Frankes’ strict parenting style had previously led some viewers to report them to authorities. Franke had also faced backlash for videos in which she  refused to bring her then-6-year-old lunch  after the child forgot to pack food and  threatened to throw away  her children’s prized possessions.

Hildebrandt also faced scrutiny over her life-coaching service, ConneXions , which some former clients described to NBC News as a program that isolated them from loved ones and destroyed marriages.

Read more of NBC News' coverage of Franke:

  • Ruby Franke’s business partner gave life coaching that ruined lives, some former clients say

Franke, who was held without bail since her arrest, is pursuing “personal growth and rehabilitation” by apologizing to and trying to reconcile with members of her family, the law firm representing her said in December .

Lawyers for Franke said Hildebrandt “systematically isolated” Franke from her family over a prolonged period of time, which caused her to adopt a “distorted sense of morality” under Hildebrandt’s influence.

In November, Kevin Franke filed for divorce . Randy Kester, his attorney, told TODAY.com in September that the couple had been separated for 13 months “at Ruby’s directive.”

Lawyers for Franke said at the time of the divorce filing that she was “devastated” by the news, but that she understood Kevin Franke’s reasoning and respected his decision.

The statement also noted that she offered her “full cooperation” to help reunite their children with their father.

Virginia Blanchard, who has been representing the children, and Kester, Kevin Franke’s attorney, did not respond to requests for comment made ahead of Tuesday’s sentencing.

Five Places Russia Is Fighting to Break Through Ukrainian Lines

Ukraine is engaged in a desperate fight to hold back the Russian onslaught.

Russian forces captured the longtime Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka before dawn on Saturday, Moscow’s first major battlefield gain since it took Bakhmut last May.

But across the entire 600-mile-long front, Ukraine is short on ammunition without renewed American military assistance, and it is struggling to replenish its own depleted forces after two years of brutal fighting.

Russia’s assault has split into five major lines of attack, spanning towns and cities across much of the front in eastern and southern Ukraine. Here is the status of Russia’s offensive in five critical battles:

1. Avdiivka

Russia captured a longtime ukrainian stronghold..

The now-destroyed city of Avdiivka covers only some 12 square miles. But for the better part of a decade it carved a bulge in the front line that undermined critical Russian logistical operations. It sits only a few miles from the city of Donetsk, which Russia has occupied since 2014.

In recent weeks, Russian forces have breached a critical supply line and threatened to encircle Ukrainian soldiers. Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, the head of Ukraine’s forces in the south, said that Ukraine had no choice but to withdraw.

“In a situation where the enemy is advancing on the corpses of their own soldiers with a 10-to-1 shell advantage, under constant bombardment, this is the only correct solution,” he said in a statement.

It’s not clear how far the Russians might be able to push this fight beyond Avdiivka, or how well the Ukrainians have constructed their next lines of defense. But the next major population centers, home to tens of thousands of civilians, are only about 35 miles to the west.

Roughly 50,000 Russian soldiers have been dedicated to the fight for Avdiivka in this direction, although the numbers fluctuated. Tens of thousands of Russians have been killed or wounded, according to Western and Ukrainian officials, but Russia has steadily replenished their ranks, including using convicts to join the fighting.

Even if the lines stabilize after the Russians take the city, its fall allows the Russian military to move troops and equipment more efficiently behind the line as it presses in other directions.

A destroyed town is now a base for Russian attacks.

By last month, Russian forces had finally cleared out the last Ukrainian defenders of Marinka , another longtime frontline town.

There is very little left of Marinka after two years of Russian bombardments and battles. But its capture has allowed the Russians to turn their attention to the south and another vital Ukrainian stronghold, Vuhledar .

Last year, the Russians repeatedly tried to attack Vuhledar from the south and suffered catastrophic losses, including a devastating defeat in one of the largest tank battles of the war.

But with Marinka under control, the Russians are attacking Vuhledar from the north. They are currently advancing through the village of Novomykhailivka, which is about 13 miles to the northeast.

It is not clear how many forces the Russians have amassed in this direction, but Ukrainian officials have said Russia has kept around 40,000 in the nearby Mariupol area to be deployed for attacks from the south.

Soldiers fighting in the Vuhledar area said that the fall of Avdiivka, 55 miles to the northeast, would likely free up Russian forces to step up attacks from the north.

3. Robotyne

Russia is seeking to reverse ukraine’s largest gains last year..

When Ukraine’s failed summer counteroffensive culminated last year, its forces had managed to advance only about ten miles deep into the southern front, reaching just beyond a tiny village, Robotyne .

Russia now appears determined to win back what it lost.

The Russian military has more troops concentrated on this front than on the Avdiivka front, Dmytro Lykhovii, a spokesman for Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the south, said this week.

“It seems that the Russians have set a goal to gain some success there by storming in, just as they are trying to do in Avdiivka,” he said.

4. Kreminna

Russia is pushing from kreminna to reclaim towns in the northeast it lost to ukraine in late 2022..

Ever since the Russians were driven out of occupied territories in northeastern Ukraine more than a year ago — losing control over more than 500 settlements spread over 11,000 square kilometers — they have been fighting to try and take it back.

Last year, little territory changed hands, despite intense fighting in the forest belts along the front here. Now, Russia is starting to move forward again, albeit slowly in the face of fierce Ukrainian resistance.

Russian forces are pushing in two directions from the city of Kreminna : toward the battered city of Kupiansk to the north, and toward Lyman , 80 miles to the south. Russia has maintained a total force of around 110,000 troops in the area for months, despite losses, Illia Yevlash, a spokesman for the military in the area, told reporters earlier this month.

Russia has regained the momentum, and a major Ukrainian city could come into artillery range.

Russia destroyed and then seized the city of Bakhmut in May, its last significant territorial gain on the battlefield before advancing on Avdiivka this week. By the time the Russians took Bakhmut, their forces were exhausted, and the Wagner mercenary group that led the fight was in open rebellion against the Russian ministry of defense.

Ukrainian hopes to exploit the disarray to counterattack around the flanks of the city largely stalled. Now, it is the Russians who have the initiative.

General Oleksandr Syrsky, the newly appointed commander of Ukrainian forces, said recently that the Russians are determined to break through their defenses around Chasiv Yar , which would give them control of commanding heights in the area and expose the city of Kramatorsk to increased artillery fire. Some 62,000 Russian soldiers are on the ground in the Bakhmut direction, according to Ukrainian estimates.

“The situation is tense, requiring constant monitoring of the overall situation and prompt decision-making on the ground,” Gen. Syrsky said in a statement earlier this month.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

As the world observes the second anniversary  of Russia’s invasion, many Ukrainian citizens are taking a longer view of the conflict , pinpointing the Maidan uprising of 2014 as the start of a 10-year war with their adversary.

Senator Chuck Schumer, the majority leader, traveled to Ukraine  for a visit that aimed to show American solidarity with a democratic ally under attack and to increase the pressure on Republicans to quit opposing additional U.S. aid.

Russian forces have launched multiple attacks around the southern Ukrainian village of Robotyne , targeting land hard-won by Ukraine in a rare success of its counteroffensive in 2023.

Sending a Message: Two years since the start of the war in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin of Russia has fully embraced the image of an unpredictable strongman  ready to escalate his conflict with the West.

Wounded Soldiers: The number of Russian troops with amputated limbs or serious injuries is believed to be staggering . When these veterans return home, they face a patchwork system of treatment and, often, efforts to keep them out of the public eye .

Creative Use of Weapons: Ukraine’s use of a Patriot missile to take down a plane in January is an example of how novel battlefield tactics can be fraught with peril as well as promise .

Broadcasting Rage: Residents of the battered Ukrainian city of Kharkiv turn to a station called Radio Boiling Over to vent their anger at Russian attacks .

Have you ever been completely gazeboed? German linguists find 546 'drunkonyms' in English language

  • Michael McIntyre
  • Tuesday 20 February 2024 at 2:02pm

synonym of assignment in english

After an extensive study it has been found at least 546 synonyms for the word "drunk" - dubbed "drunkonyms" - exist across the English language

By Lily Ford, ITV News Multimedia Producer

Have you ever been utterly gazeboed after one too many glasses of wine?

You also might have been carparked, trollied, or even pyjamaed, it turns out, after two German linguists took the claim of British comedian Michael McIntyre very seriously.

McIntyre once said during a stand-up show that posh Brits could use any word to mean "drunk" in the English language.

After an extensive study recently published in the Yearbook of the German Cognitive Linguistics Association , Professors Christina Sanchez-Stockhammer and Peter Uhrig found at least 546 synonyms for the word "drunk" - dubbed "drunkonyms" - across the English language.

The regular Briton will be familiar with the classics, such as "wasted" or "hammered". These ol' faithfuls have marked their territory at the top of the nation's favourite drunkonyms list.

But what about "fried", "toastered", or "sozzled"? Well, they're valid too, according to this study.

The professors discovered that "drunk" mainly occurs in the combinations "too", "so", or "very" drunk but unexpectedly, not with the kinds of adverb used by McIntyre.

By contrast, the drunkonyms ending in ‑ed (for example, "blasted" and "loaded") most often occur with the expected intensifiers "completely" or "totally" (like, "completely loaded").

As expected, the combination of "be" plus the intensifying adverb and the word ending in -ed is commonly used to refer to drunkenness, but not often enough to explain how language users understand new drunkonyms, they thought.

The linguists therefore provided an additional explanation: by the time English native speakers reach adulthood, they have most likely experienced so many different words ending in -ed meaning "drunk" that it allows them to interpret words with unknown meaning ending in -ed (such as "cabbaged") as "drunk" in many contexts.

This is how those 546 drunkonyms are explained.

Even though excessive alcohol consumption may come with negative consequences, drunkenness is commonly discussed using a wide range of light-hearted linguistic means in English, the study also found.

Professor Sanchez-Stockhammer observed: "The humorous effect of drunkonyms is often achieved through their indirectness."

What renders McIntyre’s examples "gazeboed" or "carparked" funny is that there is no obvious relation between the base (e.g. “gazebo”) and the meaning "drunk".

The English language also expresses drunkenness indirectly by shortening phrases like "blind drunk" and "nicely drunk" to the corresponding drunkonyms "blind" and "nicely".

"All this suggests that drunkonyms fit in well with English linguistic and humourous traditions”, Professor Sanchez-Stockhammer added.
