Really nice seat and fantastic staff on board. Would recommend row 1 as the foot well in all seats is bigger than the rest of the deck and useful if you plan to sleep. I personally didn't find the galley noise too bad and slept pretty well. The only negative was that the A350 seats are pretty hard (firm) to sleep on, even with the Virgin mattress pad. A whole lot comfier than the 789 though.

I liked this as I was travelling with my girlfriend. We could put our seat back at any time. Without having to worry.

Flew from LAS to LHR, and being a night flight, I was hoping to get some sleep. The foot space in the seat was restricted due to the metal box (this seems to be the standard for economy window seats on this aircraft), and the recline on the seat is too much for the already limited space. I'm not a tall person (165cm) but when the person in front reclined their seat, it pressed into my knees and the tv screen was around 6 inches from my face, making it impossible to watch. I was unable to ope my tray table, and had to ask a member of the crew to get the person to put the seat back into an upright position so I was able to eat. The crew were excellent, but Virgin Atlantic either need to stop cramming people in like battery hens, or restrict the recline on the seats.

Sat at the front of the premium economy cabin on both the outbound and inbound flights from Las Vegas. Outbound flight we were seated in 21H & 21K which was in the 2 seats together pitch on the right side of the plane. The seats were very comfy with the tray table in the arm rest and the tv tucked down between the 2 seats. I'm 5'3 and my feet couldn't reach all the way to the wall so there was more than enough legroom plus the cabin crew offer you a footstool after take off. Our flight home was just as good too. We were sat in the middle and aisle of row 21 (F & G) so had the same legroom and footstool.

Our journey on this flight was excellent. The seat configuration is a nuisance as you have to have the bed made or as a recliner. I like to nap and wake up and eat/read/watch TV. But once made the bed is comfortable and stable unlike the BA variety. The bedding and pyjamas are also very good quality. I didn't eat, but my husband said the food was first class. The bar is set up not just with help yourself alcohol, but also fruit juices and water plus snacks. This is useful for an overnight flight. The lighting was very well managed, and the automatic shades allowing you to see out without being blinded by light are very good. I am really impressed with Virgin Atlantic quality and thought/planning in everything - from the sustainable amenity kit to the service.

This is an aisle seat in premium economy 1 row up from the back row. The seat reclines quite a bit, enough to comfortably watch a movie or read. It’s still hard to sleep as your head is fairly upright. Premium economy is much nicer than economy in that it has its own restrooms and food service. The flight attendants are only in the aisles a couple of times for drinks and the first meal. Being in this seat it’s easy to get up and access the overhead, which is roomy, and get to the restroom. When the person in seat in front of you reclines their seat though it’s more difficult to see the movie monitor.

Worst layout ever never mind upper class facing line of strangers and there facing you back of head to window can’t believe someone can design this

An average long haul flight seat. Fairly cozy. Supplied with all necessary long haul flights features. No complaints at all so far.

Virgin atlantics premium economy has the best seats and are very comfortable and the service is excellent would love to travel again while going back home to Bombay

Seated behind the snack bar wall with lots of leg room which are reseved for disabled and only bookable at checkin if no disabled require them. But foot rest is brought to you after take off and monitor stowed away until take off or on landing so you can't view it at those times.

Tried economy delight for the first time. My row was behind exit seats. Good leg room, however it makes little difference if someone in front reclines their chair far back. There should be as limit on how far back seats can recline. The food was not good in particular a steak pasty served half way through the flight. It had more pastry than anything else and was quite small. The alleged afternoon tea was served before landing. Very disappointing!! The scone was small and cold and served in a cardboard box. The roll needed more mozerella.

Great seat. Full recline and no one behind you to worry about. No toilets at the back so no people loitering. Plus it's quite entertaining watching people mistaking the galley behind for the toilets!

First trip on Virgin Atlantic. Very impressed overall. This will cover my overall experience to/from London. Service was exceptional. All of these folks truly seem to love their jobs were a true delight to interact with. What a change from several attendants who seemed truly miserable on my last transatlantic flight via United. The dinner and "high tea" were excellent. Enjoyed the WonderWall on the way back, it was quite popular. A simple touch that gives you a little treat and sense of control over your food/drink options. As for the seat itself- I'm female of average build . Chose seat 25C (Premium Economy) because it would allow me to recline without bothering others behind me. Was a bit nervous whether it would really recline fully. Can happily report it does and it was great to stay fully reclined entire flight without worrying about how it was for a seat mate in back. I was so happy with it, I tried to switch my seat on the way back to the same one, but it was filled. There is plenty of leg room at the bottom at all times, but with the passenger in front of me reclined, my knees were nearly hit. (I'm just 5'4"). This was a surprise. When the window seat person next to me had to get out to go use the toilet, it was VERY difficult - way too tight a squeeze between reclined seat in front of me and my seat for her to squeeze past. (She wasn't very large either, just not tiny.) It's a tough situation. If you pay so much extra you clearly want to enjoy the comfort, but to provide enough space for someone to pass by a reclined seat, you would need to add several more inches, which I'm guessing would end up boosting up the price significantly. I would definitely fly VA again and choose Premium Economy. However, if I was a lot taller, I'd want to check with others first how it is to have the seat in front of me reclined. Checking in at Heathrow was a breeze. No one in front of me to check bags, they offer a separate line for Premium Economy. (This was deciding factor for me between VA and Brit. Air). Security was much more thorough at LHR than IAD , but went fairly fast, about 8 mins. (I'm Global Pass, but that's not recognized at LHR.)

The seat was comfortable for an economy seat. The recline position of the seat was adequate. The food was typically poor quality airline food. The service provided by the staff was excellent. The entertainment sound system was awful and should be improved to satisfy the passengers.

I flew VA upper class from Heathrow (T3)to HKG on a 787-9. My trip didn't get off to a good start. The check-in staff at the airport counter acted like an immigration officer and I was made to feel like an illegal alien trying to leave the country. Anyway, back to the positive, The best part about flying Virgin at Heathrow is they have a private security channel and it only took me 3 minutes to go through security. Once on board the flight, I was greeted by a not so friendly flight attendant. When I show her my boarding pass, she told me in a stern voice that she didn't need to see it if I knew where to go (just not my lucky day) It would have been nicer for her to just point to where my seat was. The rest of the crews were fine and the main attendant was lovely. I sat on seat 10K on the right-hand side of the cabin near the bar. A tip for seat selection; always pick seats on the left side (row A) where there's a lot more privacy and you don't have to spend your flight looking at other passenger's feet. The seat itself was comfortable and the food was good. I would have prefered the more traditional Business class seats offered by most other airlines but VA prices are quite a lot cheaper than other airline's business class, i.e. Singapore and Cathay pacific. I don't' know if I would fly upper class with VA again. This was my second time flying with VA upper class and I just don't think their service is as good as the other airlines.

Economy class flight. The media box under the front seat is just awful if you are normal sized (180cm) as it pushes into your calf when you try to stretch out for overnight flights. Note the aisle seats don't have this box so always go for them. The seats are impossibly hard, halfway into the flight I didn't know how to sit any more. Awful. Shame as the crew was nice as always, and the food edible for a change.

Great service, very friendly attentive staff. Food was good with a reasonable selection. Movie & TV selection was ok, not as good as Emirates. Flat bed with a comfy mattress. This seat was very quiet and the overall noise in the cabin was minimal. I liked the fact that there was not a trolley being pushed up & down the aisle.

My wife and I flew PE in 22F &G. The middle seat was very cramped. When the seat in front reclined there was only about 6" of legroom to get out of the seat and you have basically to climb over the armrest to exit. We have to fly back London - Johannesburg but managed to change to 2 separate aisle seats. Really view these middle seats as very poor value for money.

Premium. Economy..I find this seat a very good seat .... is not too close to the toilets and not too far back so you get served last. By far one of the most comfortable seats .... 100% more comfy than Economy ... liked the footrest . Enough legroom even when the seat in front of you is reclined

Upperclass checkin at Heathrow was wonderful, great club with full meals and drinks, and most important was the people and service!

Simple Flying

Trip review: virgin atlantic's boeing 787-9 in premium economy.

There was plenty to experience on this transatlantic service.

As part of an ongoing series of flight reviews, Simple Flying gives its take on Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner service from London Heathrow to San Francisco International.

The flight time is scheduled for 11 hours nonstop, and this journalist was able to book a premium economy ticket via Delta Air Lines , which codeshares, along with KLM and Finnair , on the route.

Airport check-in

I arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport via the tube station, which opens into an underground passage connecting Terminals 1,2 & 3, and the Heathrow Express. Terminal 4 is served by its own stop on the Piccadilly Line. However, it is currently closed for commercial flights.

The United States still requires a negative COVID test for entry, even for fully vaccinated citizens and residents. Any type is accepted, so I opted for the rapid antigen instead of the more timely and expensive PCR required previously for other destinations. The COVID testing center can be found in the forecourt of Terminal 3, right as you come up from the tunnel which connects the Tube, Heathrow Express, and other terminals at Entrance D1.

The testing process was remarkably organized and seamless, and ExpressTest emailed my results in half the forty minutes it was scheduled to process, and the results were also available online.

The check-in area for Delta and Virgin Atlantic in Heathrow's Terminal 3

Upon checking in via the self-service kiosks, customers are then requested to proceed with their documents to bag drop. The premium check-in queue was relatively short, and after an agent checked my passport, boarding pass, and COVID test results, I was ushered to an agent who checked in my bags within a few minutes.

As customers flying in premium economy are not automatically entitled to lounge access, I proceeded to one of several lounges in Terminal 3 for walk-in and paying customers. I was able to access the No 1 Lounge and Aspire Lounges via my LoungeKey and Priority Pass card. I oped for the No 1 Lounge as it offers a full bar, hot food buffet, and exceptional views of the runway.

The boarding process

Upon boarding, I was able to look around the cabin before being offered a welcome drink to take to my seat and the option to move to my choice of empty seats in the cabin to ensure I could have an entire row to myself if desired. The cabin is laid out in a 2-3-2 configuration, so I opted for my originally booked window seat to maximize my views leaving Heathrow and landing in San Francisco .

I was offered any of the available rows as I boarded (towards the end) to ensure that I had an empty row. The check-in agent explained the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner serving flying was set in a 2-3-2 configuration for premium economy and verified there was nobody next to me on the journey. The crew offered me the option to move to the other side, but I was happy with the window I had chosen at check-in to ensure optimal views for takeoff and landing.

seat

The seats come with an adjustable headrest, power sockets, a large inflight entertainment system, and a generous amount of space. At 6’2 (189 cm), this journalist still had quite a few inches of legroom even when the seat in front of me was fully reclined. The seats also come with an adjustable footrest and retracting tray table.

Flight experience

I was seated right over the wing, which was especially exciting after discovering that the composite wings of the Boeing 787 series are specifically designed to bend and flex slightly to replicate the motion of birds in flight. This flexibility has the benefit of reducing turbulence and ensuring a smoother ride for passengers.

The flight was less than half full, and the head stewardess came over as we were getting seated to thank me for being a Delta Medallion customer before taking seats for takeoff. The first round of drinks was served promptly as soon as the captain cleared the flight crew to move around. Menus for the day's service were passed around at the same time and included the new addition to the menu of Aviation Gin, the world's highest-ranked gin, which was also recently added to the menu at British Airways.

Virgin Atlantic menu

Meal service

The airline announced a fresh new menu earlier this year and a revamp of their signature Mile High Tea. The cabin crew served dinner service promptly and efficiently, and the menu was well-thought-out to offer a significant selection of foods for each taste.

There was a delicious vegan starter of pomegranate tabbouleh with hummus, sundried tomato, and a ciabatta roll. The main courses consisted of a chicken lasagne with garden vegetables, Herb roasted salmon with potatoes and peas, and a paneer and sweet potato coconut curry with pea pilau rice for the vegetarian option.

dinner

One of the highlights of the meal service was the mini salt and pepper shakers shaped like a tiny propellor and jet engines. The flight crew noticed my excitement and pointed out a small inscription on the bottom of the shakers reading "Pinched from Virgin Atlantic." The pun serves as both an implicit permission to take the memorable shakers home with you and clever wordplay on the phrases "a pinch of salt" and the art of "pinching" or stealing a low-value but unique item.

Dessert was a mini cake, followed by the head stewardess coming around with a tray of apple juice and water as a palate cleanser! Before settling in for the long flight, there was a refreshing post-snack of organic ice lollies and another tea and coffee service.

As we approached San Francisco, we a and cakes were served as part of the airline's signature Mile High Tea. The finger sandwiches were delightful and comprised of mozzarella, tomato, and pesto on brown bread and a cream cheese and dill on white bread. A warm scone accompanied the sandwiches with clotted cream and strawberry jam and a selection of sweets.

tea

Additional perks and features

The galley was also fitted with a mini snack bar for use by customers at any time during the flight. Snacks offered included a bag of organic olives, pretzels, chocolates, and various snacks. A similar snack bar debuted on JetBlue's new routes to London this past year, which offers a significantly smaller but equally accessible selection.

There was a sincere feeling that the airline was making a concerted effort to accommodate customers with dietary restrictions with a selection of thoughtful and considerate foods to enable us to enjoy this flight on a Dreamliner instead of resignedly settling for a min-bag of peanuts and pretzels, which only half the population realistically enjoys.

Simple Flying also recently had the opportunity to review the premium economy product on the airlines' Airbus A350 aircraft on a recent flight from London Heathrow to New Delhi.

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Virgin Atlantic Aircraft Fleet Data and Registration Number

Virgin atlantic fleet boeing 787-9 dreamliner cabin interior class configuration and seats layout.

The Virgin Atlantic Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft features a three class configuration with 31 lie-flat bed Upper Class seats, 35 Premium Economy seats, and 198 standard Economy class seats.

Virgin Atlantic charges extra for bulkhead and other seats which have more legroom.

These seats are referred to as Extra Legroom Seats.

Passengers should call Virgin Atlantic reservations as the seats may be already taken on the day of travel.

Exit row seats are also reserved for a fee.

The seat configuration in this Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Upper Class is a herringbone configuration, in 1-1-1 layout.

This means that the seats face away from the window.

All window seats faced into the middle, with the port seats facing a wall (i.e., the back of the middle column of seats).

These seats provided the most privacy and were best for single travelers.

The seats had a relatively small IFE screen compared to other products, a power outlet and USB socket. a small cocktail table and larger table for eating and working.

The seat only reclined partially in seat mode, and had to be flipped over to be made into a bed.

The 198 economy class seats on Virgin’s B787 are split across two cabins configured 3-3-3 (A-B-C, D-F-G, H-J-K).

The front cabin (rows 45 to 52) sits behind premium economy, separated by a bulkhead and curtains, with the second, larger cabin (rows 53 to 68) divided from the front one by washrooms.

The fabric-upholstered Recaro seat has a width of 18.9 inches, a six-inch recline and 31 inches of pitch.

It was comfortable and had an adjustable leather headrest, a nine-inch IFE touchscreen, a table that folded in half, and a magazine pouch.

There was also a coat hook, a USB port and in-seat power.

The entertainment system, called Vera, had a very good selection of about 80 movies along with plentiful TV, music and gaming options and a seat chat function.

The aircraft was wifi enabled, with 40MB of data costing £4.99 or 150MB for £14.99.A blanket, pillow and headphones (not noise-cancelling) were provided.

Seat Map and Seating Chart Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner Virgin Atlantic

Seat Map and Seating Chart Boeing 787 9 Dreamliner Virgin Atlantic

Business class consists of 31 flat bed seats that are located in 11 rows.

Most of them have 1-1-1 configuration.

All the seats of the business class are standard.

Only the seats 7A and 7K have no windows but close location of the bar may cause some discomfort for passengers of the seat 10G.

Premium Economy class has 35 recliner seats.

There are 5 rows here that have 2-3-2 configuration.

Passengers traveling with infants are often seated on the seats of the 21st row as these seats have bassinets position of which may cause discomfort.

Noise that is coming from the galleys and lavatories will also cause inconvenience to passengers of these seats.

Also these seats are narrower than standard and have no floor storage during take-off and landing.

Economy class may transport 198 passengers.

Position of the bassinets may restrict legroom of the seats of the 45th row.

As the tray tables are built-in the armrests the width of these seats is reduced a little.

Lack of floor storage during take-off and landing is another disadvantage of these seats.

To reserve the seats 47ABC and 47HJK an extra fee should be paid.

These seats offer extra legroom to passengers.

Proximity of the lavatories may represent a problem to passengers of the seats 51ABC, 51D, 51G , 51HJK and 52DFG.

Behind the exit row the second section of economy class seats is located.

Most of them have 3-3-3 configuration.

Thanks to the exit row located in front passengers of the seats of the 53rd row will feel comfortable as they offer extra legroom.

Other passengers tend to congregate in this area while waiting to use lavatories and thus causing discomfort to passengers of these seats.

Tray tables are in the armrests making them immovable and reducing the width of the seats.

These seats have no floor storage during take-off and landing.

The seats 53A and 53K have misaligned windows.

The seats 53DFG are reserved for passengers with babies as these seats have bassinets.

The main disadvantage of the seats 64A and 64K are misaligned windows.

Close location of the galleys may be bothersome for passengers of the seats 66ABC, 66HJK, 67D, 67G and 68DFG.

The best Virgin Atlantic economy seats

Daniel Ross

Flying in economy doesn't have to be a dreadful experience. But part of making it more manageable is by making sure you're sat in the best seat in the cabin. And if you're flying with Virgin Atlantic, there are some clear winners.

To make things complicated, Virgin has three fare types in economy. Of the three types, Economy Delight is the most expensive (starting at around $226 more than a regular Economy Light fare), and it's the only fare that includes any extra legroom seats. So, to make it fair, we'll focus on the best seats for Economy Light and Classic passengers, as this is the most common.

Which aircraft offer economy seats?

  • 10 Airbus A330-300s
  • 4 Airbus A330-200s
  • 4 Airbus A350-1000s
  • 17 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners

Virgin doesn't operate any routes long enough to warrant an all premium cabin aircraft like Singapore Airlines' A350-900ULR. Each of its aircraft has an economy cabin with anywhere from 185 to 375 seats.

Best seating strategy for economy across all long-haul Virgin Atlantic aircraft

Top picks: Without a doubt, the best economy seats of all of Virgin's aircraft used to be in the bubble of the 747 before she went into early retirement due to the coronavirus pandemic .

If you're flying Virgin soon, you're more likely to be flying on an A350 or a Dreamliner to or from Heathrow (LHR). Economy cabins vary, and it's hard to say really which is best out of the other jets because there are so many variables and it may fall to personal preference. That said, the general rule is pick the seats in the exit row or the front of the cabin.

Related: How to pick your perfect airplane seat

Instead of giving our suggestion of the best aircraft for flying economy, we're going to focus on the best seat on each of Virgin's long-haul aircraft instead. All of our top suggestions below are based on a solo traveler.

Best economy seats on a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 787 Dreamliner

Top picks: 53A, 53K

The economy cabin on the Dreamliner is split into a smaller front cabin and a larger rear cabin of mainly 3-3-3 configuration. While there are some regular seats for passengers with Economy Light and Economy Classic tickets, these are D, F and G in the center of the cabin. However, row 43 at the front row is a bulkhead, but it's also where the bassinet is fitted. If you want to be sure to get as much legroom as possible, you're best off sitting in the larger, main rear cabin in row 53, which is also an exit row. The window seats in this cabin are also behind the wing, meaning your views will be less disrupted than in the forward economy cabin with the Economy Delight seats.

Keep in mind that there is no under-seat storage in this row, and the IFE screen folds up from underneath the seat rather than in front of you. All things considered, this seat is more spacious than the front row of the Economy Delight seats. Rather than paying the excess, it might just be worth paying for an Economy Classic ticket (if you need a bag) or just an Economy Light fare and setting an alert using ExpertFlyer to let you know when seats in row 53 are released. While that's not a fail-safe plan to get extra legroom for cheap, it might just save you $130 or so.

Best economy seats on a Virgin Atlantic Airbus A330-300

Top picks: 40A and 40K

At 185 seats, the A330-300 has the fewest seats in economy compared to other Virgin aircraft. The slightly more compact 2-4-2 configuration makes avoiding the middle section of four seats in the middle of the cabin even more important than usual.

Quite the opposite to the Dreamliner, the best regular economy seats on the Airbus A330-300 are actually in the forward, smaller economy cabin as the Economy Delight seats are situated further back. This means a couple of things: Row 40, the front row at the bulkhead, while it features the most legroom, the views from the windows are disrupted by the wings, and the bassinets are situated in this row. However, compared to the other options, this would still be my top pick for economy on the A330-300.

Row (Photo by Nick Ewen/The Points Guy)

If good views from the window take priority for you, then one of the window seats in the main cabin from row 57 might be better.

Service on this aircraft is likely to start from both the front and back of the cabin, meaning that if you're in the middle of the two cabins then you're likely to have to wait the longest for your food.

Best economy seats on a Virgin Atlantic Airbus A330-200

Top picks: 21A, 21K, 36A, 36K.

Economy on this aircraft has a rather unique layout compared to other similar models in the airline's fleet. Its 212 seats are in the same 2-4-2 config as its bigger brother the A330-300, but the Economy Delight seats with larger pitch are in the forward economy cabin, similar to on the Dreamliner. But the A330-200 comes into its own again as the front row of the forward cabin has been left as regular economy seats, meaning that passengers with Economy Light or Classic tickets can still choose to sit in the front row of the cabin.

Related: The evolution of airline seating

The slight non-conformity to this aircraft's layout is because Virgin bought them from the now-defunct Air Berlin .

That said, my top picks for this cabin would be 21A and 21K because they're closest to the front of the cabin, usually meaning quicker service, and they have the most legroom of all the regular economy seats -- the only downside is that the seats are on the wing, meaning that views are less than perfect. Row 36 also has extra legroom, as it's situated in the exit row at the start of the rear economy cabin, so 36A and 36K would be a close second place. The view from the window is an improvement to row 21, but the main downside to these seats is that they are right in the middle of the forward and rear galleys, meaning that passengers in this row are likely to wait the longest to be served food and drinks.

Best economy seats on a Virgin Atlantic Airbus A350-1000

Top picks: 45A and 45K

The second-most densely packed economy cabin in Virgin's fleet belongs to the brand new A350-1000 with a total of 235 seats, second only to the jumbo. You can watch our comparison of all three cabins on the Virgin A350 here .

The airline opted for a more compact 3-3-3 configuration. This means that there nine seats per row in comparison to the eight per row on the A330 -300 and -200s, meaning you'll have one extra person to disturb or climb over if you need to leave your window seat.

The 3-3-3 configured economy cabin on Virgin's A350 (Photo by Jean Arnas/The Points Guy)

The good news is that the regular economy seats start right at the front of the economy cabin, with Economy Delight situated further back after the exit row in the middle of the cabin. This means that you can choose to sit in the best seats in the house -- 45A and 45K.

The Upper and Premium cabins on the A350 stretch as far as after the wings, so no matter which economy row you sit in on the A350, the window seats will always have undisrupted views.

Bottom line

Regardless of where you sit, you should have a perfectly comfortable ride onboard Virgin's aircraft. However, you can always make it better. Hopefully, this guide will help you decide, based on your personal preferences, where the best seat for you would be.

Premium Economy seat 21A amenities

Seat 21A is a standard premium economy window seat with 97cm 38" of seat pitch, which is average across Boeing 787-9's worldwide. 21A is positioned at the bulkhead, which means that no seat can recline into your space, but it may mean limited legroom for taller travelers, and there is no under-seat stowage during takeoff and landing.
