Why Start a Sports Coaching Institute Business?

Sports coaches are known to help athletes develop their full potential. These individuals are in charge of training athletes in a sport by analysing their performances, instructing in crucial skills and by giving encouragement.

The duties of a sport coach is vast and might differ from instructor, assessor, friend, mentor, facilitator, chauffeur, demonstrator, adviser, supporter, fact finder, motivator, counsellor, organizer, planner and the fountain of all knowledge. The coach aims to create the right conditions for learning to happen and to find ways of motivating athletes.

Coaches are very important in the world of sport and so is the institution where they are trained to perform all these duties. If you have the required knowledge and experience, this can be a very lucrative business when started and managed right.

One of the first things you will have to do is to make sure your institution is located in a central place. This means that you have to lease or buy commercial space, preferably a nice complex in the town or city. The reason for choosing a central location is so that students from all over the city can reach the place easily by train or via roadways.

You also have to get hold of the right curriculum along with other materials such textbooks and papers. Once you find the right location and resources, you need to think about promoting your coaching institute to the targeted audience. Have it in mind that competition is intense in this industry and you have to advertise your business effectively to reach out to your potential customers.

Note that with multiple coaching institutes available in the united states, gaining a strong footing in the industry is without doubt a daunting task. It is very important that you keep low tuition fees to attract more and more students to your institute. Maybe as your institute gains more popularity, you can think of increasing the price.

It also important that you be careful when hiring tutors for your institute. Competent tutor means hiring someone who is an expert in the said sport and also meets the requirements of students. You will also need to employ the right teaching techniques if you want to be successful in the sports coaching institute business.

It is a known fact in this business that some teachers want to grab money but in return, they fail to deliver quality education. As a business owner who wants to create massive brand awareness, never compromise with quality.

Always make sure that the students who have enrolled in your coaching institute receive quality education and superb teaching. And for that, you and your fellow tutors need to be constantly updated. The Internet is a vast resource of information and you can make use of it.

Pioneer Golf Institute is a single sport coaching and fitness complex designed to be used by residents of Colorado and the surrounding areas. Apart from providing an excellent value to our customers, we are determined to establish an unmatched learning and sporting atmosphere that will add to the knowledge and enjoyment of every students and employee in the Institute.

We also understand that we cannot do all these if we know nothing about our industry and our chances for survival. To find out these facts, we hired the services of well-known professional in the area of business consulting and promotion with solid experience in the sports sector to help us in establishing a standard and competitive golf coaching Institute that can compete effectively in the golf industry.

They had to work with the management of our Institute in conducting our SWOT analysis. Outlined below is a summary from the result of the SWOT analysis that was conducted for Pioneer Golf Institute.

According to our Swot analysis, our strength in this industry is as follows; We at PGI must establish our institute as a distinguished name in Colorado and creatively market our services to each of our market segments.

Our SWOT analysis noted that by establishing an impeccable atmosphere in our institute through the use of first class equipment, elegant and comfortable lobby, showers and changing rooms, floors, colours and decoration, clients will want to frequent our institute and recommend it to their colleagues and friends.

It also stated that by providing our students with skilled and qualified staff who show genuine concern for the students, people will feel comfortable and confident that we can meet all of their golf coaching needs.

According to our SWOT Analysis, it might take some time for our golf coaching Institute to break into the market and gain acceptance via reputation in the already saturated education cum golf coaching industry. This it is believed is our major weakness at Pioneer Golf Institute.

  • Opportunities

Indeed the opportunity in the golf coaching business is vast and lucrative. People are becoming conscious of their health and are looking to exercise more often. Golf on its own is growing in popularity and people are always willing to improve their skills. We believe that the growing demand for qualified golf coaches is also creating a massive demand for excellent golf institutes that will provide adequate knowledge to the ever innovative and brilliant golf industry.

Our SWOT Analysis at Pioneer Golf Institute noted that some of the threats we will face as a Golf coaching Institute in the United States of America will include unfavourable government policies that might affect the education system, the appearance of a competitor within our location of operation and global economic downturn which usually affects spending/purchasing power. We have made plans to curtail all possible challenges and threats.

7. MARKET ANALYSIS

  • Market Trend

According to our research, 2018 has brought a lot of opportunities to golf training and the game itself. One way golfers are already taking their game to the next level is with the Srixon Fourth Generation Q-Star ball that premiered at the PGA show in Las Vegas back in 2017.

Note that this next generation of Q-Star comes with a lower-compression Energetic Gradient Growth core, which has variable stiffness and firmness to deliver the proper feel and distance control for each shot type. A more efficient 338 Aerodynamic Speed Dimple pattern has been designed to offer more control and predictability in the wind. Although not completely new to 2018, experts expect this ball to trend throughout this year.

Report has it that golf shoes are expected to become a little wilder this year. Indeed we can’t completely discuss golf trends without commenting on the tech that continues to transform the game each year. Ranging from swing analysers to wearable tech, 2017 provided us with the chance to take the game one step further.

Artificial intelligence even made an appearance on the course in May 2017. This year experts anticipate the emergence of smartphone apps to enhance golf coaching and game. The game has also developed a little reputation for being a non-cardiovascular sport over the years.

After all, the amount of movement required to play a round of golf doesn’t provide the cardiovascular benefits that a sport like football might provide. But this present year has changed all of that. This year, golf that incorporates more cardiovascular activity is supposed to be a big fad on courses all over the United States.

8. Our Target Market

Pioneer Golf Institute is the only institute of its kind in all Colorado and surroundings (more than one million people). Some aspects of the location will cater mainly to golf coaching and training students while the other area will cater for our course members.

Due to the flexibility of time schedule, the independency of weather conditions, and in combination with the comfortable auto feeding system, we at Pioneer Golf Institute believe that our target market differ from coaching students to people who want to learn about golf, have some stress relief leisure activities and socialize with other members.

We will also develop good relations with well-known golf courses, clubs and schools in Colorado in order to teach golf to youths.

  • Our competitive advantage

We at Pioneer Golf Institute believe our institute has a very large potential market. Due to the uniqueness of our institute throughout Colorado, we strongly believe we can become the main golf teaching institute quickly. We plan to accomplish this actively and continuously by promoting our institute through media as well as hosting and supporting various community events.

We also believe our competitive advantage at Pioneer Golf Institute is in three segments. First, our coaching institute is the only golf coaching institute that offers our kind of training facilities. The second segment of our competitive advantage is our business location, size, and appearance of the institute that will attract many people.\

Lastly, our well stocked golf shop where the students can find first class equipment in the best prices in Colorado and have the possibility to test them in actual conditions.

We at Pioneer Golf Institute strongly believe that by maintaining our focus in our strategy, marketing, program development, and fulfillment, our coaching institute will be known as the top golf training institute in the Whole of United States in no time.

9. SALES AND MARKETING STRATEGY

  • Marketing and Sales strategy

Note that our Sales at Pioneer Golf Institute will be based on the services and amenities provided by our institute. We plan to ensure that all the users of our institute must feel they are getting the best possible value for their money. If there is a better value, for equal services, we at Pioneer Golf Institute will strive to match or beat that value for customers.

We also plan to ensure that any person desiring a membership at our institute to study or to play will be clearly notified of all our membership options. During this brief discussion, the person will be also informed of all of the courses, certifications, services, programs and amenities we at Pioneer Golf Institute has to offer. We plan to build our marketing plan around the following;

  • Focus on service and support.
  • Establish a relationship business.
  • Focus on golf equipment as the key target market.

Sources of Income

Pioneer Golf Institute is built with the aim of generating substantial income in the golf coaching industry by leveraging all available opportunities in the industry. We plan to sustain our business and make profits through the following means;

  • Tuition and fees for our golf coaching training, certifications and programs by professionals.
  • Sales and profits from our golf equipment shop
  • Sales and profits from our Lobby used for relaxation and discussion by students and members where brandy, cigars and refreshments will be available.
  • Charges for golf practice and balls

10. Sales Forecast

We at Pioneer Golf Institute assume that by the end of our first year, we must have registered 200 students and 100 members. We also expect an enviable growth rate for several years, up to 500 members. That will be the maximum number of members that can be accommodated by this Institute.

Further expansion of the grounds shall be considered in future. Also note that the first year students’ and members’ registration is considered incremental and of course at first months and summer period is expected to be low. But we also assume that by next year, our growth rate will be steady although the numbers are very pessimistic for safety reasons.

Have it in mind that all sales items are related and proportional to memberships except the advertising. However, even this will increase if the popularity of our institute does so.

Also the sales of equipment are also very pessimistic because golf is still growing in popularity in Colorado. Generally our institute has been planned to accommodate 500 members and students, the maximum possible, which is a very realistic target since it will be the pioneer in a virgin market which is ready to make significant steps in future.

It important to state that Colorado Springs’ economy is driven primarily by the military, the high-tech industry, and tourism, in that order.

Report has it that the city is currently experiencing some growth mainly in the service sectors. The unemployment rate for the city as of October 2015 was 3.9%, a decrease from 4.8% in October 2014 and 7.3% in November 2013 and compared to 3.8% for the state and 5.0% for the nation.

11. Publicity and Advertising Strategy

We know the benefits of a good publicity strategy, which is why even though we have no specific marketing plan, we hope to leverage a lot of strategies to boost our business through publicity. We at Pioneer Golf Institute are very ready to become the number one choice when it comes to golf training.

That is why we made provisions for effective and direct publicity and advertisement of our golf coaching Institute. Outlined below are the platforms we hope to leverage on to promoting Pioneer Golf Institute;

  • Place adverts on both print (community based newspapers and magazines) and electronic media platforms
  • Sponsor relevant community based events/programs
  • Develop ongoing relationships with guidance counsellors that will refer their students to the Coaching School on an ongoing basis.
  • Leverage on the internet and social media platforms like; Instagram, Facebook , twitter, YouTube, Google + et al to promote our brand
  • Install our billboards in strategic locations all around Colorado Springs.
  • Distribute our fliers and handbills in target areas in and around Colorado Springs
  • Passing general information via our school’s social media handles like twitter, Facebook, Google hangout etc.
  • Ensure that all our teaching and non – teaching staff members wear our branded shirts and all our vehicles are well branded with our schools’ logo.

12. Our Pricing Strategy

Educational institutions all over the United States of America charge students per term/per session and students have the options of either paying their tuition before resumption or during the school session. We also know that Golf coaching institutions generally bill their clients based on loads of factors like equipment, curriculum, duration, services offerings and extra – curricular activities et al.

Our pricing plan at Pioneer Golf Institute is to keep our fees below the average market rate. We also hope to give out special discounted rates to all our members at regular intervals. We also understand that there are some of our prospective clients that would need special assistance, we will offer flat rate for such services that will be tailored to take care of such needs.

  • Our Payment Options

We at Pioneer Golf Institute plan to establish different payment options that will suit our members and students at any given time and place. We have also made plans and partnered with well-known banking platforms in the United States of America in other to offer these services. Here are the payment options that we will make available to our clients;

  • Payment by via bank transfer
  • Payment via online bank transfer
  • Payment via check
  • Payment via mobile money
  • Payment with cash

13. Startup Expenditure (Budget)

We understand that the cost of starting our business will depend on the approach and scale of the business. Pioneer Golf Institute will be a medium sized golf coaching school that will provide a comfortable location for our clients to learn and practice.

We plan to spend our start-up costs on mostly equipment purchase, main building (which will be a wooden pre-fabricated building of good quality), coaching and training centre construction, golf equipment for the retail store, stationery, legal costs, advertising, land rent and expenses associated with opening our first office. Below is a detailed cost analysis of starting Pioneer Golf Institute;

  • Business incorporating fees in the United States of America will cost – $750.
  • The budget for Liability insurance, permits and license will cost – $103,500
  • Acquiring a large building and course that will accommodate the number of block and classes et al (Re – Construction of the facility inclusive) will cost – $600,000
  • Equipping the training ground and office (computers, printers, projectors, markers, pens and pencils, furniture, telephones, filing cabinets, and electronics) will cost – $150,000
  • Launching an official Website will cost – $500
  • The budget for the payment of salaries for the first three months of operations: $120,000
  • Additional Expenditure such as Business cards, Signage, Adverts and Promotions will cost – $50,000

From our detailed analysis above, we have come to the conclusion that we will need approximately $1,200,000 to start up Pioneer Golf Institute.

Generating Funding/Start-up Capital for Pioneer Golf Institute

Pioneer Golf Institute will be a Limited Liability Corporation financed partially by direct owner investment and a long-term loan. Michael Neil and Santos Wonsan will own 25% of the company each. While the other two limited partners will own 40% and 10% respectively. These are the areas we intend generating our startup capital;

  • Generate part of the startup capital from personal savings
  • Generate part of the startup capital from friends and other extended family members
  • Generate a larger chunk of the startup capital from the bank (loan facility).

We have been able to raise about $800,000 (Personal savings $670,000 and soft loan from family members $130,000) and we are at the finishing stage of getting a loan facility of $500,000 from our bank. We’ve made sure that all the required papers and documents have been duly signed and submitted, the loan has been approved and any moment from now our account will be credited.

14. Sustainability and Expansion Strategy

We at Pioneer Golf Institute will issue a certificate of completion after our golf coaching course. We expects that each course we offer will last approximately eight weeks and will provide 100 hours of class and training ground instructions.

Our major goal is to be a profitable business starting from the very first month of our opening. Due to the size, appearance and convenient location of our institute, we believe a lot of people will be attracted to our institute to see what we have to offer. But, we do not plan to wait for students and members to come to first. Instead, we plan to focus our marketing strategies on those target audience that match our offerings.

Note that our main objective with our early marketing strategy will be to get people into our institute and convince people that we can bring golf to Colorado. We believe that once people see what we have to offer, and feel the atmosphere that will be created, they will want to return and participate in the many activities and programs we provide. Some of the ways we plan to get people into our institute include:

  • Giving specialized tours and lessons to junior and senior high schools during the building and early completion of the institute.
  • Hosting and/or supporting various community events that will attract many people who otherwise will not come.
  • Free testing of golf equipment.
  • Mailing our free day passes to managers of golf clubs
  • Offering special discounts for annual subscriptions.
  • Hosting a big promotional event to open the institute that will be free to everyone.

Create A Business Plan

A business plan is an essential document that outlines a company’s goals, products, services, and strategies for achieving them. It is a roadmap for how you intend to proceed in the world of business, and is a critical tool for launching a successful venture. When creating a plan for starting a sports academy, there are several key components that you must include.

  • Define the purpose of your sports business. Identify your target demographic and what type of programs you’ll offer. Identify why you’re passionate about this particular venture.
  • Outline your services or products. Explain the types of programs and services that you plan to offer, including details like location, equipment, and staffing.
  • Analyze the market. Review the competitive landscape to determine how you can provide a unique offering that stands out from your competitors.
  • Develop a marketing strategy. Define how you will reach your target customers, and list strategies like advertising, search engine optimization, and social media outreach.
  • Plan your finances. Create a cost analysis and financial projections to understand your start-up and operational expenses. Calculate your break-even point.
  • Outline your organizational structure. Describe how the ownership and management team will work together, and identify any outside resources you’ll require.

Prepare A Financial Model

Creating a financial model is critical for the success of a sport academy business. A financial model estimates the financials of the business such as revenue, cost and profit. A good financial model should reflect the assumptions and objectives of the business.

Here are some tips and tricks to help you prepare a financial model for your sport academy business:

  • Understand the sport academy industry in which you will be operating. Know the trends, projected revenue numbers, cost drivers and other factors that will have an impact on your business.
  • Build in financial Flexibility. Make sure that your models takes into account the ‘what-ifs’ of running a business. What if certain student numbers don’t materialize? What if your cost assumptions are higher than expected?
  • Be conservative with your projections. Your model should assume conservative scenarios so that if things go worse than expected, you are still able to function as a business.
  • Keep it simple. While you don’t want your model to be overly simplistic, you don’t want it to be overly complex either. Your goal should be to find the balance between precision and accuracy.
  • Backtest your model. Run the financial model multiple times to make sure it is functioning properly. This will give you a better idea of the potential financials of your business.
  • Work with a professional. Consider hiring a financial planner or accountant to help you create a financial model. They will be able to help you ensure that your model is accurate and comprehensive.

Creating a robust financial model is a critical step in launching and running a successful sport academy business. By following the tips and tricks outlined above, you should be able to create a financial model that will serve as the foundation of your business.

Research and Acquire Necessary Permits or Licenses

Good business planning requires you to investigate the necessary permits and licenses you will need to open a sport academy business. Depending on your country, state or local government, permits and licenses can be required to run a single sport club or multiple sports academies. Many of these permits and licenses vary widely in terms of costs and time it takes to be approved. To get started, here are a few tips:

  • Check with your local chamber of commerce, Department of Business Regulation or Department of Licensing, to see if limitations and restrictions exist for the services you plan to offer.
  • Check with a lawyer experienced in business formation to make sure you are in compliance with local and state laws.
  • Help protect your business from foreclosure and delinquency by doing your due diligence. Research property, fire, and health regulations related to your sports academy.
  • Check with your local insurance provider to make sure you are adequately insured for your individual area, as well as any associated legal costs.
  • The requirements for permits and licenses also typically vary from location to location. So, contact your local government agency to find out more about what permits and licenses are applicable in your area.

Acquiring the right permits and licenses is an important part of starting your sports academy business. Be sure to do your research in order to remain in compliance with the laws of your local and state governments.

Secure Funding

Finding funds to open and operate a sports academy requires a comprehensive understanding of the financial resources available. The amount of money and availability of resources depends on the business model and expected outcomes. It is recommended to create a model that outlines the estimated costs associated with the venture.

Below are some common funding sources for sports academies:

  • Personal savings: Use existing resources saved over time.
  • Bootstrapping: Use assets such as building space, equipment, and other resources associated with the business.
  • Grants: Local or federal government grants to help promote a business idea and provide resources to develop it further.
  • Venture capital: Private funds pooled together to invest in various business ideas.
  • Angel investors: High-wealth individuals willing to invest their own money into a business in exchange for ownership or equity.
  • Loans: Banks, lenders, or other financial institutions and agencies can provide loans at an agreed-upon rate of interest.

It is important to be aware of all the requirements associated with sourcing and securing funding. Funding sources can be complex and require detailed information for successful application. Depending on the type of funding, the process can take anywhere from a few days to several months.

It is essential to have a feasible plan and the ability to demonstrate that the business is worth the time, money and effort. A thorough understanding of the potential risks and rewards of running a sports academy is important for success. Before applying for any funding, research, analyze and understand the different options available to best fit the academy’s business model.

Draw Up A Marketing Strategy

Developing a marketing strategy for the launch of a sports academy is essential in order to build brand awareness and become competitive in the market.

Here are some tips for drafting a sound marketing plan:

  • First, identify and analyze your target market in order to tailor services and advertising campaigns.
  • Creating a unique, eye-catching logo and slogan will help readers quickly identify who you are.
  • It is important to build connections within the community. Developing an outreach campaign to local businesses and organizations will bring in more potential customers and gain trust.
  • Creating a website with relevant content, such as a blog, is crucial in reaching out to potential customers. Make sure to keep the website updated.
  • Connect with social media channels to draw in more eyes to your business.
  • Advertising campaigns are also important. Running ads in newspapers and on radio stations will further promote your business.
  • Organise promotional events such as open houses or discounted trial packages to drum up interest.
  • Provide quality customer service to ensure customer satisfaction, which can help spread word-of-mouth about your sports academy.

Draft A Mission And Vision Statement

Drafting a mission and vision statement is an important step to establishing a successful sport academy business. This statement should reflect the values and purpose of your organization, and create a guide to focus on customer satisfaction and operational excellence. Here are some tips and tricks to help you create a mission and vision statement that will appeal to your customer base and set you apart from the competition.

Identify The Goal Of The Business:

Before you begin to create a mission and vision statement, it is important to identify the goal of the business. This goal should be clearly defined and explained in the statement. The drafted statement should reflect this goal and provide a shared understanding of the purpose of the business. It will act as a reference that can be used by all owners, employees, and customers.

Seek Inspiration:

To create a great mission and vision statement, it is important to seek inspiration from other successful businesses. Research the mission and vision statements of other sport academy businesses and use the provided information to come up with ideas for your statement. Make sure that the statement is unique and reflects the values of your business.

Keep The Statement Concise:

The mission and vision statement should be easy to understand and reads in one comprehensive sentence. Keep it concise and to the point and avoid any complex ideas or words. It should be something that can be easily recognizable and can be echoed by everyone in the company. Make sure that the statement is concise yet strong enough to reflect the goals of the business.

Be Clear and Specific:

The mission and vision statement should be clear and specific enough to give a clear understanding of the purpose and ambition of the business. Be descriptive and avoid any vague language or choices of words that could lead to multiple interpretations. Ideally, to ensure clarity, the statement should not be more than one sentence.

Engage Your Audience:

When it comes to crafting a mission and vision statement, it is important to engage your potential customers and make them feel part of your business. Use language that appeals to your customer base and make sure that the statement resonates with your target audience. The statement should reflect the values and promise of your business and be a reflection of the services and solutions you offer.

Be Authentic:

The mission and vision statement should be a true reflection of the business and its values. Do not use language that is too generic or overused. Be authentic and make sure that the statement is a true reflection of the business and its vision for the future.

Identify Sites And Premises

When starting a sport academy business, it is important to consider the location of the premises. Choosing the right physical location can play a major role in the success of the academy, both in terms of meeting its mission and goals and also in terms of profitability. Here are some tips on how to identify the right sites and premises for a sport academy.

  • Consider accessibility: Ensure that the physical location of the academy is easily accessible to potential customers. This will make it easier for them to get to the academy, increasing the chances of building a successful customer base.
  • Research areas: Before selecting a site, research the local area to determine the best place to locate conveniently. Different locations will have different advantages and amenities that can help your business, so take time to explore different areas.
  • Think long term: Consider the long-term viability of the location. While the initial choice may seem perfect, you should also consider whether the premises will remain suitable for your needs as the business grows and changes in the future.
  • Competition: Consider whether there is any competing sports academies or businesses nearby. If there are rivals close by, you may need to look further afield, or adjust your business plan in order to stand out from the competition.
  • Visit locations: Once you have identified a few potential locations, take the time to visit them yourself. Doing this allows you to better gauge the suitability of each premise, as well as enabling you to develop an understanding of the local area.

Research Suppliers

Before opening a sport academy business, it is important to research potential suppliers for essential equipment, materials, and services. This step is one of the most crucial parts of opening a business as it ensures the longevity and profitability of the company.

It is important to remember that the cost of materials and services needs to be taken into account when formulating a budget. The cheapest supplier may not always be the best option for the business. Reliability, quality, and long-term costs should all be taken into consideration.

Here are some tips and tricks to use when researching suppliers:

  • Create a list of potential suppliers, with detailed information of their products, services, and delivery times.
  • Find out what references are available. Speak to people who have already used the supplier’s services or products.
  • Prioritize suppliers that offer discounts, free shipping, and other incentives.
  • Read reviews and feedback to get an idea of past customer experiences.
  • Ask for all the details regarding contractual arrangements and payment terms.
  • Compare prices, delivery times, and quality offered by different suppliers.
  • Assess how reliable the supplier is and how quickly they are able to react to changes.
  • Check whether the supplier offers any warranties or guarantees.
  • Develop a strong relationship with the supplier and ensure communication is regular.

Researching potential suppliers and developing strong relationships with the right ones is essential for any business. Taking the time to find the best suppliers for the business needs is essential for the success of the venture.

Set Up A System Of Accounting

Accounting is the foundation of every business, and it is important to get it right because all business decisions are based on it. Argumentative Essay about Divorce

When it comes to divorce, there are many disputable topics—for example, the reasons people separate or its impact on children. It’s easy to find support and statistics for both issues. And you’ll need them as facts are a crucial part of a divorce argumentative essay.

As a starting point:

Research your idea and choose a side to support. Make sure that among all argumentative essay topics about divorce, you selected the most interesting for yourself. In your thesis statement, concisely express your position, so the reader can quickly get it.

Then, start writing the entire essay. Regardless of what type of paper you are writing—anti or pro divorce argumentative essay—your writing should meet these requirements:

  • Base your points on logic;
  • Present both sides of the arguments, but support only one;
  • Take into consideration counterclaims;
  • Support all the arguments by valid evidence;
  • Use a calm, informative tone.

Don’t forget to incorporate quotes and figures to convince your readers.

Persuasive Essay about Divorce

What is the goal of writing persuasive essays ? It’s to convince your reader that your position on a particular problem is true.

Therefore, writing this paper means that you should identify an individual problem related to the topic. In the introduction of your persuasive essay about divorce, you should choose your side and deliver it to the reader.

Crucial note:

Similarly to an argumentative essay, you have to provide credible facts to support your position. Yet here, you use them to back up your opinion and persuade your reader.

While composing your persuasive essay about the legalization of divorce, remember its distinctive features:

  • Based on emotions;
  • Presents only one side of the argument;
  • Ignores counterclaims;
  • The tone is dynamic, emotionally-charged, and aggressive to some extent.

Cause and Effect Essay on Divorce

Whether it concerns old parents or a young couple, divorce typically has the same causes and effects. You can often see them clearly, even in books or movies.

The essay outline for the causes and effects of divorce essay is quite common:

Introduction.

In your divorce essay introduction, provide a general background and compose a clear thesis statement. For example, your thesis might look like this:

A divorce, caused by the spouses’ expectations mismatch, results in a lack of communication between children and one of the parents.

In this part of your essay, investigate the cause and effect of divorce, you stated before.

For the given thesis, the main points would be the following:

The primary cause of divorce is the mismatch in the spouses’ expectations from the marriage.

The divorce often results in a lack of children’s interactions with one of the parents.

  • Conclusion.

Synthesize all of your arguments and give your audience a space for a further investigation of your issue.

Narrative Essay about Divorce

If your assignment is to write a family essay, you can choose from a wide range of topics. For this purpose, a marriage essay or a divorce essay would be perfect.

In a short paper about your family, it isn’t easy to cover many topics. So choose only one.

Look through some narrative essay topics and select the one you like:

  • The story of my divorce: how did I decide to break up with my spouse?
  • My life completely changed after my parents divorced.
  • How my life looked like before the divorce with my wife/husband and how it looks now.
  • The way divorce destroys healthy communication between children and parents in my family.

For and Against Divorce Essay

As you know, both the negative and positive effects of divorce are disputable, making them appealing to discuss. There are many recent studies and relevant statistical data on the topic to help you write such an essay.

This topic would also be great for a speech on divorce.

Wondering what are the for and against divorce arguments? Take a look at the following:

✒ Divorce: Causes and Effects

We have a pleasant bonus for you! Below, you can find useful arguments and insightful ideas that you can use in your papers on divorce. Apply our concepts in any type of essay, adjusting them to your topic.

Divorce essays can cover the following issues:

Generally Known Facts on Divorces

When covering this issue in your persuasive essay on divorce, you will have to cover the problem altogether. Include the common marriage problems that psychologists all over the world study. Use their statistical data on divorces when crafting your argument.

Divorce is quite a broad topic, and you may want to narrow it down. With so much information available, you could write a research paper on divorce without any difficulty.

Statistical Data on Divorces

Good divorce essays should include enough statistical data. It will add more scientific value and reveal your research abilities. Besides, facts and figures present many exciting topics to comment on.

For example:

You can do significant research concerning divorce causes and consequences. Draw a contrast between divorce in several countries, or examine the age and education of people who officially separate more often.

Reasons for Divorces

What does an essay on divorce mean without discussion of its reasons?

Find out different sociologists’ viewpoints on the reasons for divorces. Then underline the cause you consider to be the most truthful one.

You can also provide your own theory on the grounds for divorces in your persuasive essay on divorce. The key point is to prove the accuracy of your statement.

Divorce Prevention Ideas

If there is a problem, there must be some solution. So, think of the possible ways to make a marriage work.

Investigate divorce causes from a scientific point of view. Examine the primary studies that reveal why people actually break up. Also, discuss the precautions that can help married couples avoid significant conflicts.

Effects of Divorce on Children

Parents sometimes forget that their divorce isn’t only about them but also about their children. It causes psychological problems for kids, which you can classify in your paper. Don’t forget to add some statistical data on divorce to support your arguments.

Every child reacts differently to their parents’ breakup. It’s a rare case when divorce consequences are positive, making the effects on kids an urgent topic to discuss.

Positive Effects of Divorce

Sometimes divorce isn’t a catastrophe but rather the only way to heal wounds and begin a new life. Often, people don’t recognize that they need to change their lives for the better. This situation is primarily related to abusive marriages or those with regular cheating.

In these cases, the positive effects of divorce may seem easy to understand. However, psychologists have to make great efforts to persuade people to end their relationships. Write a paper making this same argument.

How to Create a Strong Thesis on Marriage

Lane cummings.

Creating a strong thesis on marriage requires strategic preparation.

Your thesis statement is the central focus and main argument of an essay or paper, and it is ideally an organic development from your observations and research, as states the University of Texas. Your thesis should lucidly indicate to the reader how you are going to approach the topic, similar to a map or blueprint. It should be debatable, specific and very narrow. For example, if you are writing a paper or article on the subject of marriage, approaching the task of creating a solid thesis strategically is crucial; as with a subject that is as commonly understood as marriage, it would be easy to fall into the trap of creating a thesis that is not truly arguable.

Write down issues and concerns that directly relate to marriage and that you feel strongly passionate about. The more passionate you are about your thesis, the easier it will be to write the paper.

Examine your list. Circle the issues that interest you most of all. Research these issues thoroughly, try to make connections, and look for patterns so that you can create a strong and interesting thesis. For example, if you are researching the background of spouses who get divorces, an interesting fact to examine might be the history of marriage and divorce of the parents of each spouse.

Write your thesis in simple English, based on your findings. A thesis based on the research you have done will be inherently strong, as you will be able to support it. For example, if you discover that divorce is higher in couples where one person has divorced parents, you could state that couples who have had divorced parents have a higher likelihood of separating.

Revise your thesis. Revising is key to creating a strong thesis. Choose more descriptive words and use a declarative tone. For example, you could revise the thesis in step 3 to: Adults who have experienced the divorce of their own parents during childhood have a higher likelihood of terminating their marriage.

Add one adverb to your thesis to give it more of a punch. For example, to the thesis written above, you could write: "Adults who have experienced the divorce of their own parents during childhood have a drastically/dramatically/radically/severely higher likelihood of terminating their marriage."

How to Write an Essay on Marriage and Divorce

Sometimes divorce results from a mutual decision and a clean break with the family. But, more often, it is the culmination of years of tension. For this reason, the law includes numerous safeguards for parents and their offspring in the event of a divorce.

Family circumstances leading up to the divorce are also essential to consider. This is because socioeconomic status can significantly impact a couple’s ability to keep their marriage together. In conclusion, there is a wide range of potential topics for an effective essay on divorce.

Prove that you’ve thought about the bigger picture by discussing the factors contributing to divorce.

Find the root causes of the issue and explain them in a way that will convince the leader of their veracity. Use relevant statistics to support your claims and give your research more weight.

Once you’ve spotted a worrying pattern, you can try to elaborate on it and explain why this particular family issue is so pervasive.

Such concepts can be developed into full-fledged essays with the potential to leave a deep impression on the reader.

Legal Proceedings

It’s important to talk about the various legal proceedings involved in a divorce, regardless of the reason for the split. One of the worst parts of divorce is having to go to court to resolve issues like property division and child custody.

Prenuptial agreements are one example of precautions that can be taken to avoid such problems. However, you should also mention the drawbacks of these agreements.

Finally, you can talk about the societal factors contributing to divorce, such as teen pregnancy leading to early or forced marriages.

Sociological research can help pinpoint the root causes of divorce, which must be addressed to end this social problem.

If you want your essay to have more of an impact, remember to follow these general guidelines:

Points to Note for Marriage and Divorce Essay Introduction

Use interesting and engaging ways to start your divorce essay to keep the reader interested. If the reader loses interest and skims, you’ve failed.

Write an introductory paragraph that presents a high-level summary of the issue without diving into subtopics or specialist language.

Conclude with a clear thesis statement that states the question you will address and the position you will take, if applicable.

Don’t stray too far from the central argument you laid out in your thesis. To better engage your reader, keep your work narrowly focused.

Like how you should begin the paper, your divorce essay should end with a conclusion that summarizes the entire paper. Restate your thesis and add a few fitting closing remarks to your essay.

Separate article sections with titles that identify the themes should be explored in different paragraphs. This method makes the essay easier to read and more organized overall.

How to Write a Thesis Statement | 4 Steps & Examples

Published on January 11, 2019 by Shona McCombes . Revised on August 15, 2023 by Eoghan Ryan.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . It usually comes near the end of your introduction .

Your thesis will look a bit different depending on the type of essay you’re writing. But the thesis statement should always clearly state the main idea you want to get across. Everything else in your essay should relate back to this idea.

You can write your thesis statement by following four simple steps:

  • Start with a question
  • Write your initial answer
  • Develop your answer
  • Refine your thesis statement

A thesis statement summarizes the central points of your essay. It is a signpost telling the reader what the essay will argue and why.

The best thesis statements are:

  • Concise: A good thesis statement is short and sweet—don’t use more words than necessary. State your point clearly and directly in one or two sentences.
  • Contentious: Your thesis shouldn’t be a simple statement of fact that everyone already knows. A good thesis statement is a claim that requires further evidence or analysis to back it up.
  • Coherent: Everything mentioned in your thesis statement must be supported and explained in the rest of your paper.

The thesis statement generally appears at the end of your essay introduction or research paper introduction .

The spread of the internet has had a world-changing effect, not least on the world of education. The use of the internet in academic contexts and among young people more generally is hotly debated. For many who did not grow up with this technology, its effects seem alarming and potentially harmful. This concern, while understandable, is misguided. The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education: the internet facilitates easier access to information, exposure to different perspectives, and a flexible learning environment for both students and teachers.

You should come up with an initial thesis, sometimes called a working thesis , early in the writing process . As soon as you’ve decided on your essay topic , you need to work out what you want to say about it—a clear thesis will give your essay direction and structure.

You might already have a question in your assignment, but if not, try to come up with your own. What would you like to find out or decide about your topic?

For example, you might ask:

After some initial research, you can formulate a tentative answer to this question. At this stage it can be simple, and it should guide the research process and writing process .

Prevent plagiarism. Run a free check.

Now you need to consider why this is your answer and how you will convince your reader to agree with you. As you read more about your topic and begin writing, your answer should get more detailed.

In your essay about the internet and education, the thesis states your position and sketches out the key arguments you’ll use to support it.

The negatives of internet use are outweighed by its many benefits for education because it facilitates easier access to information.

In your essay about braille, the thesis statement summarizes the key historical development that you’ll explain.

The invention of braille in the 19th century transformed the lives of blind people, allowing them to participate more actively in public life.

A strong thesis statement should tell the reader:

  • Why you hold this position
  • What they’ll learn from your essay
  • The key points of your argument or narrative

The final thesis statement doesn’t just state your position, but summarizes your overall argument or the entire topic you’re going to explain. To strengthen a weak thesis statement, it can help to consider the broader context of your topic.

These examples are more specific and show that you’ll explore your topic in depth.

Your thesis statement should match the goals of your essay, which vary depending on the type of essay you’re writing:

  • In an argumentative essay , your thesis statement should take a strong position. Your aim in the essay is to convince your reader of this thesis based on evidence and logical reasoning.
  • In an expository essay , you’ll aim to explain the facts of a topic or process. Your thesis statement doesn’t have to include a strong opinion in this case, but it should clearly state the central point you want to make, and mention the key elements you’ll explain.

A thesis statement is a sentence that sums up the central point of your paper or essay . Everything else you write should relate to this key idea.

The thesis statement is essential in any academic essay or research paper for two main reasons:

  • It gives your writing direction and focus.
  • It gives the reader a concise summary of your main point.

Without a clear thesis statement, an essay can end up rambling and unfocused, leaving your reader unsure of exactly what you want to say.

Follow these four steps to come up with a thesis statement :

  • Ask a question about your topic .
  • Write your initial answer.
  • Develop your answer by including reasons.
  • Refine your answer, adding more detail and nuance.

The thesis statement should be placed at the end of your essay introduction .

  • Devorah Baum on Marriage, Love, and Divorce

February 14, 2024 | ceb95 | European History , Humanities , Interviews , Philosophy

Devorah Baum, author of On Marriage , talks with us about the proposal that sparked her writing on marriage, the woes of modern dating, and the important role divorce plays in our imaginative life.

This conversation has been edited for length and clarity, transcribed from an episode of the Yale University Press Podcast. Some questions have been omitted—listen to the full conversation here.

This book has been described as “a fascinating exploration” by The Guardian , and you as “an erudite and entertaining guide through the landscape of marriage, bringing a lively intellectual rigor to changing attitudes on matters of religion, feminism, parenting and sexuality.” Can you tell us how you came to write about marriage?

DB: I think the first line of my book is something like writing a book about marriage wasn’t my idea. Someone else someone eligible proposed it to me. And I said, “yes.”. . . .The moment I have a proposal, ideas and images and ways of thinking, begin to just coalesce. And, I’m inspired. I thought to write this book on marriage only when it was proposed. But once it was proposed, I understood the logic of the proposal. I understood that the person who proposed it to me had seen something in me that I haven’t particularly noticed. And what he had seen is that I’m clearly obsessed with marriage.

You talk about the veil, both metaphorically and literally. Why is the veil important to understanding how humans have conceptualized the usefulness of marriage?

DB: So fascinating, because actually, the word nuptial comes from Latin term, nūbere , to veil. In a way, marriage has always been associated with the idea of creating a private life. A space within the world that requires the sanction of the world, because one of the main things about marriage institutionally is that the world has to sanction this relationship between two people. There’s a permission there for the couple, to have a private life that the world does not bestow on anybody else, including single people. That strangeness about it taking the world, the public world to sanction this hiddenness of marriage interests me.

You write extensively about language and marriage, conversation, gossip, vows, and everything having to do with talking or not talking about such a union. How has the invention of social media complicated language and marriage?

DB: It has this sort of propensity to make even more emphatic these aspects of identity of relationship status as though you’re required constantly, no matter who you are, to update the world. I say this as somebody with absolutely no experience of social media myself—I’ve never been on it. But, you know, I’ve heard about it. One of the things it seems to do is demand a constant curation of your identity in the world. If you’ve got any updates to make, you must go online and immediately make them. To that extent, it’s the very opposite of what in its best iteration marriage offers behind its veil, which is the possibility to be indecisive, non-determinate, changing, to be constantly exchanging roles. Being one person one day, somebody else the next.

In the book, you observe that the rise of streaming has changed how couples watch TV, because each person can choose what they want to watch and do it on their own. But you do argue that co-watching is still important for couples. Can you talk about these kinds of joyful benefits of co-watching?

DB: Well, joyful and traumatic. There’s a chapter called co-watching. In a way it’s a sort of code for middle age. Basically, we’re tired. We’ve got jobs and we’ve got children and we’re mostly just mostly our married life, mostly our interactions are just one big management meeting. We do comms with each other. Did you organize this? We need to book that, so on so forth. With our jobs and our children and so on. There is a risk, of course, particularly when in that period of life and marriage that intimacy goes away. And all kinds of hell can break loose when you let that happen. It can happen very easily and by accident, but then it is something to watch out for. I suppose one of the things a lot of couples I know, including my own couple, do in lieu of other forms of intimacy very often when we’re so tired is we just we watch box sets together. And that’s my favorite bit of every day.

In a moment where divorce rates are common and rising, what does divorce reveal about the entanglement or interconnections of marriage?

DB: Divorce, in its fullest sense is very rarely seriously entertained in our imaginative life. Can one ever really be outside wedlock? Can one ever really be unmarried because the world we’re in is so wed locked in all of its interlinked interlinking institutions, in so many different ways. I wind up in this book, I make a quite radical statement or provocation in relationship to divorce. I’m partly reading this through other thinkers, including the Great American philosopher Stanley Cavell. I wind up, I think, more or less saying that you should divorce if you can. . . .we should look at divorce in the way that Milton saw it as a really fundamental story about human freedom, and a really important part of our imaginative life.

Devorah Baum is a writer, a film director, and an associate professor in English literature at the University of Southampton. She is the author of Feeling Jewish (a Book for Just About Anyone) and The Jewish Joke: An Essay with Examples (Less Essay, More Examples). With Josh Appignanesi, her spouse, she is both codirector and performer in the documentaries The New Man and Husband. She lives in London, UK.

In a day when many people are living in open sexual sin, either living together without marriage, or living with another person’s wife or divorcing and remarrying at will, it is time to consider what the LORD says about this subject. We are to follow the Word of God, not our opinions, or what appears right and convenient to us.

1. All marriages are ordained of God. God joins a man and a woman in an unbreakable bond until death parts them. This is the case, even if the wedding vows were exchanged in a registry office between two pagans. A marriage is not a sacrament—as Rome teaches—so a non-Christian marriage in a secular place, or a marriage in a false church is still a joining of two in an unbreakable bond.

What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder (Matt. 19:5).
The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth (I Cor. 7:39).
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he liveth (Rom. 7:2).
Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh (Gen. 2:24).

2. Anyone who comes between a man and a woman thus joined commits adultery.

3. If there is sexual unfaithfulness in a marriage, divorce is permissible, although not commanded. Ideally, there should be repentance by the guilty party and restoration. The only ground of divorce is adultery. “Incompatibility,” boredom with one’s spouse, poverty, sickness, lusting for a younger or prettier or wealthier woman, etc., cannot be grounds for divorce. The Lord recognises one and only one ground for divorce and no ground for remarriage. Divorce on any ground other than adultery is itself adultery: “Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery” (Matt. 5:32). The reason why he “causes” her to commit adultery is because he leaves her wide open to remarriage or getting involved with another man sexually.

4. Adultery cannot break the original marriage bond, which can only be broken by God at death .

5. If any man puts away his wife and marries another woman he commits adultery against his spouse. Neither the “guilty party” (the adulterer) nor the “innocent party” (the one cheated on) may remarry unless the original spouse has died.

Whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery (Matt. 5:32).
Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery (Matt. 19:9).
Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery (Mark 10:11-12).
Whosoever putteth away his wife and marrieth another, committeth adultery: and whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery (Luke 16:18).
If while her husband liveth, she [the wife] be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress (Rom. 7:3).

6. If a man divorces his first wife he is not free to make wedding vows to another woman: unless the first spouse is dead. Nothing can sanctify or make lawful a “marriage” to a second spouse: neither the passage of time, nor conversion of one or both of the partners, nor custom, nor human law, nor public or popular opinion, nor church decree or “blessing” can make lawful a second “marriage” while the first spouse lives. Jesus confronted the many-times-“married” Samaritan woman with these words, “Thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband” (John 4:18). John the Baptist confronted Herod who was married to Herodias while Herodias’ husband Philip was still living: “It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother’s wife” (Mark 6:18). Because Philip was still alive Herod and Herodias were committing adultery. For speaking out, John the Baptist was imprisoned and executed. The same happens today. Today the persecution comes in the form of anger against the messenger. “You’re a legalist!” “God wouldn’t expect that of me!” “You are making everything too hard!” These are all common objections today.

7. To “repent” and then continue to live in the same sinful adulterous relationship with a second or third “wife” is not repentance. If a sodomite is converted or a fornicator is converted and he continues to live sexually, etc., with his “partner” while claiming to have repented, he shows himself to be unrepentant and rebellious.

8. If Jesus judges a relationship as adultery then to repent means that the adulterous relationship must stop . To continue—claiming love or hardship or any other reason—is not an option. That is part of taking up one’s cross and following Christ. You cannot live in sin and be in Christ.

9. If a man divorces his wife he has two options: be reconciled or live singly. “If she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband” (I Cor. 7:11). Entering a relationship with a third party (“marriage” or fornication or co-habitation) is not an option. Thus Jesus spoke of some who “made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake” (Matt. 19:12), people who deny themselves sex because they must live singly, being divorced.

10. If a believer is married to an unbeliever he should not seek to be loosed from such a difficult marriage. “If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away. And the woman which hath an husband that believeth not, and if he be pleased to dwell with her, let her not leave him” (I Cor. 7:12-13).

11. Nobody can claim that this is easy. The disciples were so shocked by Christ’s teachings on the unbreakable marriage bond and one ground for divorce with no remarriage that they exclaimed: “If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry” (Matt. 19:10). Jesus replied, “All men cannot receive this saying, save them to whom it is given” (Matt. 19:11). However, as hard as Christ’s words may be, Jesus will not change His teachings to accommodate us. They are timeless and unchanging; they are neither culturally limited nor old-fashioned. They are the words of the Son of God, which He received from His Father. Jesus shows mercy to adulterers (“Neither do I condemn thee: go and sin no more;” John 8:11) but He commands that they repent (“Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish;” Luke 13:5). Those who repent—which involves forsaking their sins—are shown mercy; those who do not shall not enter the kingdom of heaven:

Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers with themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God (I Cor. 6:9-11).

Jesus does not forgive somebody so that that person can continue in the same sin in which He found him. That would be a mockery.

This study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on marriage, divorce, birth, and death rates using the Poisson regression model and an interrupted time-series Poisson regression model. Before the pandemic, marriage and birth rates were decreasing, while divorce and death rates were increasing, with only the trend in birth rates being statistically significant. The immediate effect of the pandemic was a significant decrease in the divorce rate, but there were non-significant effects on birth and marriage rates. However, in the months following the onset of the pandemic, there was a statistically significant sustained effect on increasing death and divorce rates. Forecasts based on pre-pandemic data showed that by the end of 2020, marriage, divorce, death, and birth rates were higher compared to pre-pandemic levels. In conclusion, the pandemic has greatly impacted society, particularly in terms of death and divorce rates. Birth rates were not immediately affected to the time lag between decisions and actual births. Fear of COVID-19 may have increased death rates as people avoided seeking medical help. Vaccination and effective treatment strategies are vital in reducing the pandemic's impact on mortality. Supporting families financially is important due to the role of economic issues in couples’ decisions.

Introduction

The COVID-19 pandemic started in December 2019, and rapidly spread worldwide 1 . Within a span of approximately 10 months, it infected over 33 million people and caused over a million deaths in 216 countries and regions 2 . The World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a global pandemic on March 11, 2020 3 . To control the disease, crucial measures such as limiting contact between individuals and implementing quarantine protocols were put in place 4 . Quarantine can have a significant impact on one's daily life, as it limits the ability to interact with friends, family, and society, ultimately affecting both social and individual aspects of life 5 , 6 . The pandemic had significant adverse effects on societies, economies, and employment rates, resulting in social and economic crises 7 , 8 .

Similar to the 1918 influenza pandemic, the COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial impact on marriage, divorce, and fertility rates, as well as various aspects of society, including domestic violence, conflict within families 9 , 10 . In the United States, for example, marriage rates initially declined in several states but later saw an increase in some areas. Divorce rates followed a similar pattern, initially decreasing and subsequently rising in certain states 11 . In Florida, Hawaii, Dallas, and Seattle, the cumulative number of marriages decreased in 2020 compared to the previous year 12 . In Japan, the pandemic led to a decline in both marriages and divorces, particularly during the state of emergency 9 . In Italy, people preferred unregistered cohabitation and marriage during the pandemic 13 . In Denmark, the rate of divorce decreased in 2020 compared to previous years 14 . Furthermore, the pandemic impacted the fertility rate 15 . Before the pandemic, Japan already faced a concerning decline in marriage and fertility rates. The birth rate declined even further in the six months following the outbreak 9 . Following the lockdown, there was a significant decrease of 20% in live births in New York, compared to the previous year 16 . Italy also experienced a decrease in the birth rate during the pandemic 17 , and the fertility intention of women in China decreased as well 18 . Conversely, the death rate increased due to the pandemic. Iran recorded 58,900 excess deaths in 31 provinces during the first nine months after the pandemic 19 , while the United States saw an additional 198,081 deaths during the pandemic 20 . In Colombia, 65% of the additional deaths in the initial weeks of the pandemic were attributed to COVID-19 21 .

Marriage, divorce, death, and birth rates are crucial factors for planning and policymaking regarding population, economy, society, and infrastructure worldwide 22 . Additionally, migration, death, birth, and fertility rate all impact population growth 23 . Iran, which had a population of 79 million in 2015 and is the 17th most populous country in the world, is projected to experience a population decrease to 70 million by 2100 24 . Iran has entered a Second Demographic Transition characterized by low fertility rates and a shift away from traditional familial values, similar to the one that occurred in Europe and North America and is now spreading to Asia 25 . The country is experiencing a cultural shift towards individualistic norms and values that prioritize personal choice over traditional family values, reflected in the growing acceptance of alternative family structures such as single-parent households, divorce, and childless families 26 . Iran has also experienced a decline in crude marriage rates and the highest growth rate of divorce among Islamic countries in the Middle East and North Africa region 27 , 28 . Factors such as delayed marriage, non-marriage and divorce contribute significantly to the decline in the fertility rates 29 , 30 . Birth rate and total fertility rate (TFR) are critical determinants of population size and composition 31 . The decrease in fertility and mortality is one of the important indicators of Iran's aging population 24 . Population aging is expected to have several negative effects, including an increase in chronic diseases 32 , a decrease in the labor force, and adverse consequences for economic development 33 . In addition to these challenges faced by all aging societies, Iran must also contend with severe internal economic issues such as poverty, inequality, high youth unemployment rates, and political and cultural conflicts 24 .

Comprehensive investigation of the relationship between population growth indicators, such as marriage, divorce, birth, and death rates, and their potential impact from the pandemic is crucial in Iran. However, there is a lack of comprehensive studies on this issue. To address this gap, our study focuses on Kerman province, the largest and ninth most populated province in southeast Iran 34 . The primary objective of this study is to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on marriage, divorce, birth, and death rates in Kerman province, Iran.

This ecological study was conducted as part of a Ph.D. thesis. The statistical population included people who lived in Kerman Province from 2017 to 2020. Kerman Province had 23 counties with population of 3,164,718 people based on the 2016 national census 35 .

The data on marriage, divorce, birth and death was collected from the database of National Organization for Civil Registration in Kerman province from 2017 to 2020. This organization is responsible for a range of tasks, including birth and death registration, marriage and divorce registration 36 . Natural population growth, sex ratio at birth and sex ratio at dead were calculated based on birth and death data.

Statistical methods

Poisson regression model.

The Poisson regression model was used to estimate the incidence rate ratio (IRR) of marriages, divorces, births, and deaths (with a 95% CI) in Kerman province. Poisson regression is a generalized linear model form of regression analysis used to model count data 37 . It is important to assess the assumption of overdispersion to ensure the appropriateness of the model. To evaluate this, we examined the "Value/df" index for the "Pearson Chi-Square" in each model. The index values close to 1 indicate that there is a condition of equality between the mean and variance, suggesting that the Poisson regression model is well-fitted to the data in our study. The year 2020 (the first year of the COVID-19 epidemic) was used as a reference year, and the IRR of the other years was compared to year the 2020. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software (version 24). The significance level was considered at 0.05.

Interrupted time-series (ITS) analysis

To model monthly changes in marriage, divorce, birth, and death before (2017–2019) and after the COVID-19 pandemic (2020), the interrupted time-series Poisson regression model was performed. ITS analysis is a method of statistical analysis to evaluate the longitudinal effects of interventions 38 . This method is widely used for modeling the count time series 39 . In this model, the IRR's role in determining the effects of COVID-19 on variables. The IRR of the trend shows the changes in the variables in the months leading up to the pandemic, revealing how much they changed on a monthly basis before the pandemic's onset. The IRR of COVID-19 shows the immediate effect of the pandemic on the variables, indicating how much they changed at the beginning of the pandemic. The IRR index is the interaction effect of COVID-19 and the trend, revealing the sustained effect of the pandemic on the variables. It is obtained from the difference in the slope of the regression line after and before the pandemic, indicating how the trend of changes in the variables in the months following the onset of the pandemic has changed compared to before.

Data analysis was performed using R software version R 4.1.0.

After the first confirmed case of COVID-19 was reported on February 2019 in Iran, the number of infected people increased rapidly and this disease led to a national crisis. Thus, The Iranian authorities performed several instructions of quarantines to prevent the spread of this disease 40 . The study considered March 20, 2020, as the official quarantine date and start of the pandemic time in Iran. In the first year of the pandemic (1399 SH, 2020), there were 2,440,725 new cases and 584,340 deaths reported worldwide, with Iran recording 1,786,259 new cases and 61,649 deaths 41 . The data were separated by year according to the Solar Hijri calendar (SH) from 1396 to 1399 SH 42 . As the Gregorian calendar is used in most parts of the world, the months in the solar calendar and the Gregorian calendar in this study were matched as shown in Table 1 :

Ethics approval

This ecological study survey was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences (IR.RUMS.REC.1400.013).

A total of 91,025 marriages, 23,072 divorces, 210,575 births, and 58,570 deaths were registered in Kerman Province from 2017 to 2020. The highest frequency of marriage and divorce was found in 2017 and 2018, respectively. The average age of marriage was 28.15 ± 1.45 years for men and 23.21 ± 1.65 years for women. The average age of divorce was 35.32 ± 2.19 years for men and 30.54 ± 2.36 years for women. The frequency of birth has decreased in both sexes from 2017 to 2020. The frequency of death has increased in women from 2017 to 2020 and in men from 2018 to 2020. The frequency of birth and death has been higher in men than in women in all years (Table 2 ).

The natural growth of the population has dwindled over the past four years. In 2020, there was a reduction in the sex ratio at birth among males, while the sex ratio at death increased for the same gender compared to previous years. In 2020, for every 100 female births, around 104 male births were recorded. Moreover, for every 100 female deaths, approximately 80 men passed away (Table 3 ).

The frequency of marriage and divorce in urban and rural areas increased in 2020 compared to the previous year (Table 4 ).

The Poisson regression model was used to compare the incidence rate ratios (IRR) of variables in 2020, which marked the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic, with those observed in the preceding years. The IRR of marriage in 2020 was 1% (IRR: 1.01; 95% CI 0.992–1.029; P-value = 0.25) lower than in 2017, and 7.9% (IRR: 0.921; 95% CI 0.904–0.938) and 9.5% (IRR: 0.905; 95% CI 0.888–0.922) higher compared to 2018 and 2019, respectively (P < 0.001). The IRR of divorce in 2020 was 0.1% (IRR: 0.999; 95% CI 0.963–1.037; P-value = 0.978) higher than in 2017, 4.6% (IRR: 1.046; 95% CI 1.009–1.085; P-value = 0.014) lower than in 2018, and 0.1% (IRR: 0.999; 95% CI 0.963–1.036; P-value = 0.955) higher than in 2019.

The IRR of birth showed a significant decreasing trend from 2017 to 2020. The IRR of birth in 2020 was 30.0% (IRR: 1.300; 95% CI 1.284–1.316), 21.3% (IRR: 1.213; 95% CI 1.198–1.228), and 7.1% (IRR: 1.071; 95% CI 1.057–1.084) lower compared to 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively (P < 0.001). The IRR of death showed a significant increasing trend from 2017 to 2020. The IRR of death in 2020 was 23.7% (IRR: 0.763; 95% CI 0.746–0.780), 25.1% (IRR: 0.749; 95% CI 0.732–0.766), and 21.3% (IRR: 0.787; 95% CI 0.770–0.805) higher compared to 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively (P < 0.001) (Figs.  1 , 2 , 3 and 4 ).

According to our data, prior to the pandemic, approximately 35 months ago, the average monthly number of marriages stood at 1880.114 ± 768.906. However, 13 months after the pandemic, this figure rose to 1940.076 ± 937.735. Similarly, the average monthly number of divorces experienced a decline from 482.285 ± 76.225, 35 months before the pandemic to 476.307 ± 101.386 after a span of 13 months. In terms of births, 35 months prior to the pandemic, the average stood at 4602.685 ± 436.612. However, 13 months after the pandemic, this number decreased to 3806.230 ± 242.621.Lastly, the average monthly number of deaths demonstrated an increase after the pandemic. 35 months before the pandemic, the average was 1132.314 ± 133.138. However, 13 months after the pandemic, this figure rose to 1454.307 ± 299.771 (Table 5 ).

The marriage rate had an almost constant trend before the pandemic, with a monthly decrease of 0.9%, but this decrease was not statistically significant (IRR = 0.991; P = 0.200). At the beginning of the pandemic, there was an 18% increase in the marriage rate, but this increase was not statistically significant (IRR = 1.184; P = 0.562). The trend of changes in the marriage rate in the months following the onset of the pandemic increased by 1% compared to before the pandemic, but this increase was not statistically significant (IRR = 1.010; P = 0.755). The changes in the divorce rate had an almost constant trend before the pandemic, with a monthly increase of 0.2%, but this increase was not statistically significant (IRR = 1.002; P = 0.496). At the beginning of the pandemic, the divorce rate was a significant decrease of 23% (IRR = 0.769; P = 0.028). The trend of changes in the divorce rate in the months following the onset of the pandemic has significantly increased by 2.6% compared to before the pandemic (IRR = 1.026; P = 0.048).

The changes in the birth rate were significantly decreasing before the pandemic, with a monthly decrease of 0.8% (IRR = 0.992; P < 0.001). At the beginning of the pandemic, the immediate effect was a decrease in the birth rate by 5.2%, but this decrease was not statistically significant (IRR = 0.948; P = 0.205). The trend of changes in the birth rate in the months following the onset of the pandemic has increased by 0.7% compared to before the pandemic. However, this increase was not statistically significant (IRR = 1.007; P = 0.164). The changes in the death rate were almost constant before the pandemic, with a monthly increase of 0.3%, but this increase was not statistically significant (IRR = 1.003; P = 0.304). At the beginning of the pandemic, the immediate effect was an increase in the death rate by 1.2%, but this increase was not statistically significant (IRR = 1.012; P = 0.894). The trend of changes in the death rate in the months following the onset of the pandemic has statistically increased by 2.2% compared to before the pandemic (IRR = 1.022; P = 0.025) (Table 6 ).

The data presented shows that the trend of marriage was decreasing before the pandemic, but an immediate increasing effect was observed at the beginning of the pandemic. This was followed by a sustained increase with a slight slope. However, by the end of 2020, the trend of marriages was higher than predicted based on pre-pandemic data. The trend of divorce was slightly increasing before the pandemic, but an immediate decreasing effect was observed at the beginning of the pandemic. This was followed by a sustained increase with a sharp slope. However, by the end of 2020, the trend of divorces was higher than predicted based on pre-pandemic data.

In terms of births, the trend was sharply decreasing before the pandemic. An immediate decreasing effect was observed at the beginning of the pandemic, followed by a sustained decrease with a slight slope. However, by the end of 2020, the trend of births was higher than predicted based on pre-pandemic data. The trend of death was slightly increasing before the pandemic, and no immediate effect was observed at the beginning of the pandemic. This was followed by a sustained increase with a sharp slope. However, by the end of 2020, the trend of deaths was higher than predicted based on pre-pandemic data (Figs.  5 , 6 , 7 and 8 ).

In Figs.  5 , 6 , 7 and 8 , the gray dots show the monthly number of cases before the COVID-19 pandemic, and the red dots show the monthly number of cases during the pandemic. The red dashed line before the first lockdown shows the trend of changes based on the Poisson regression model of the time-series before the pandemic, and the solid red line shows the Poisson trend after the first month of quarantine. The dashed gray line shows the trend of the Poisson regression modeled seasonal pattern based on the data before the COVID-19 lockdown. The slope of the line shows the trend of changes in the number of monthly events.

Our data reveals demographic changes before and after the pandemic. In this study, we utilized aggregated data and were unable to distinguish between individuals belonging to low and high socioeconomic strata. Nevertheless, to gain a deeper understanding of the observed changes in these variables, we deliberated on plausible causes that have been previously discussed in other research works.

A comparison of the number of marriages before and after the COVID-19 pandemic reveals interesting results. The mean number of marriages following the pandemic was higher than before. Before the pandemic, there was a downward trend in marriage rates, but there was an immediate increase in the early stages of the pandemic. After that initial surge, the trend continued to rise, albeit at a slower pace. Finally, we did not observe a significant immediate or sustained effect of the pandemic on the marriage rate. However, the observed trend line of marriages at the end of 2020 was higher than the predicted trend line based on pre-pandemic data. The implementation of social distancing rules to curb the spread of the disease made it challenging to hold extravagant wedding ceremonies. Uncertainty surrounding the duration of the crisis prompted some couples to expedite their marriage registration in order to save on expenses 43 . This factor could explain the observed increase in the marriage rate.

In contrast to our study the United States, Japan, and Italy reported a decrease in marriages during the pandemic 9 , 11 , 13 . This decline can be attributed to various factors such as financial difficulties, health concerns, and quarantine measures, which led many couples to postpone or cancel their weddings 9 . During times of economic crisis, individuals, particularly those with lower socioeconomic status, often choose to delay marriage until they have more stability or better employment prospects 13 .

The mean number of divorces following the pandemic was markedly lower than before. Prior to the pandemic, there was a slight upward trend in divorce rates, which experienced an immediate decline at the beginning of the pandemic. However, the trend in divorces subsequently underwent a significant increase during the pandemic. As a result, the observed trend line of divorces at the end of 2020 was higher than the predicted trend line based on pre-pandemic data.

During the early months of the pandemic, divorce rates initially decreased in five US states before rising again in one state 11 . Japan also witnessed a decrease in the number of divorces, particularly during the period when a state of emergency was declared 9 . Conversely, Denmark observed a reduction in divorces in 2020 compared to previous years 14 .

The drop in divorce rates can be attributed to various factors. Fear of infection may have dissuaded individuals from registering their marriages or divorces 10 . Additionally, the closure of courts and unavailability of legal professionals posed challenges for those seeking to finalize their divorces 44 . The apprehension surrounding extramarital relationships due to infection concerns may have prompted couples to resolve disputes and maintain safer relationships with their spouses. Also during the pandemic adverse macroeconomic circumstances could result in reduced divorce rates. This is because distressed partners may be hesitant to bear the expenses associated with divorces, such as legal fees, court expenses, relocation costs for one or both spouses, the purchase of new furniture, and the division of marital assets 28 .

The increase in the divorce rate can be attributed to the impact of the pandemic on families. The pandemic has brought about changes in employment status and has escalated conflicts and domestic violence within families 10 . Consequently, stress, disputes, conflicts, and ultimately divorces have seen a rise due to the negative consequences of the pandemic 8 , 9 , 43 . However, it should be noted that economic factors are the most common cause of divorce 43 .

Iran has experienced a significant surge in divorce rates over the past decade, with economic factors remaining the most common cause of divorce 43 . The rise in housing costs due to a shortage of available housing and limited access to affordable financing, high unemployment rates, and inflation have played a role in driving up divorce rates, particularly among young couples 28 . Moreover, the price of gold in Iran can have an impact on the value of Mehrieh, a customary dowry in Iranian marriages. This increase in value may prompt married women to request their agreed-upon Mehrieh earlier, potentially leading to heightened family conflicts and a higher divorce rate 45 . Reasons for divorce in Iran include infidelity, extramarital affairs, sexual dissatisfaction, addiction-related domestic violence, and women's empowerment, including increased independence, higher education levels, and advocacy for their basic rights. Desperation, anger, unemployment, and poverty contribute to the vulnerability of individuals to violence. Quarantine policies further exacerbate stress, financial insecurity, isolation, limited personal space, and poor social and economic status, all negatively impacting mental health. As a result, the pandemic has led to an increase in domestic violence and divorces in Iran 46 .

Previous studies suggest various interventions that can help reduce disputes and divorce rates. Engaging in religious practices such as family prayer, studying religious texts, and worship can strengthen positive family interactions during the pandemic 47 . Additionally, individual or group spiritual practices like yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and enjoying nature with family have been found to be effective 48 . Furthermore, online training and seminars focused on family topics can be conducted to prevent family disputes and raise public awareness about divorce 49 .

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted birth rates in Kerman province. Although the mean number of births decreased following the pandemic, this difference was not statistically significant. Before the pandemic, there was a downward trend in births that immediately declined at its onset. Post-pandemic, the decline continued but at a slower rate than pre-pandemic levels. Interestingly, the observed trend line of births at the end of 2020 was higher than the predicted trend line based on pre-pandemic data.

The study's findings align with research conducted in other countries, such as New York, Italy, Japan, and China, which have also reported a decrease in birth rates during the COVID-19 pandemic 9 , 16 , 17 , 18 . It is important to note that pandemics can initially affect fertility intentions, but the actual impact on birth rates occurs with a delay. This is because the birth rate during the initial months of the pandemic is determined by decisions made by individuals approximately nine months earlier. Before the pandemic, fertility rates had already been declining in both high-income and low-income countries 26 . On the other hand, the decision to have children is influenced by cultural, social, economic, and political considerations within a particular society 50 .

Economic pressure and reduced income were identified as significant influencing factors that deterred couples from having children 18 . Uncertainty in the labor market, general societal uncertainty, and negative expectations about the future also contributed to the decline in fertility rates 15 . In Iran, the decline in fertility rates is linked to women's educational attainment, the timing of marriage and family formation, family planning and contraceptive use, economic insecurity, the influence of social networks, and changing attitudes toward marriage and fertility 51 . The negative impact of the pandemic on birth rates can be attributed to various factors, including challenges faced by housewives during quarantine, fear, anxiety, personal health problems, internet addiction, and poor mental health 46 . Consequently, couples altered their intentions regarding childbearing during this period 9 . Furthermore, the impact of migration to less densely populated areas on birth registration remains uncertain 16 . Therefore, further research is necessary to understand how social and demographic factors influence birth rates during pandemics 17 .

There was a significant rise in the rate of deaths following the pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, there was a slight upward trend in mortality rates, which was exacerbated during the pandemic. While the immediate impacts of the pandemic on mortality rates were not observed, there was a sustained effect over time. However, the observed trend line of deaths at the end of 2020 was higher than the predicted trend line based on pre-pandemic data.

Similar observations of increased death rates during the pandemic have been reported in Iran and the United States 19 , 20 . In Colombia, non-COVID-19 deaths increased in the five states with the highest COVID-19 death tolls, which may be attributable to undetected or unrecorded COVID-19-related infection 21 .

The outbreak of COVID-19 in Iran has caused a significant economic setback, which coincided with the imposition of severe political sanctions. The healthcare system, which was already grappling with numerous challenges, was severely impacted by these sanctions, leading to a shortage of crucial medical resources. As a result, the healthcare sector faced significant hurdles in delivering adequate care to patients, which further contributed to the loss of lives among Iranians due to the virus 52 . Under normal circumstances, death is not directly influenced by decision-making processes like marriage, divorce, and birth. However, during the pandemic, the increased mortality rate can be partially attributed to individuals contracting illnesses other than COVID-19 or having pre-existing diseases. Many refrained from seeking medical attention due to fear of contracting and dying from COVID-19, which ultimately resulted in more fatalities 53 . Therefore, it is evident that individual choices can have an impact on mortality rates. Thus, it is crucial to continue promoting preventive measures such as mask-wearing, hand hygiene, and social distancing to curb the spread of the virus. Additionally, vaccination and the implementation of comprehensive screening systems for rapid diagnosis, adequate treatment, and provision of necessary medications are also essential in reducing mortality rates.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to negative population growth in Kerman province, which can accelerate population aging and have adverse effects on the economy, healthcare system, and social well-being. Policymakers need to improve health and population policies to address population aging, drawing lessons from the experiences of Western countries 54 . Population growth in Iran also exacerbates environmental pollution, so energy consumption and population development policies should align with environmental efforts 55 . International economic sanctions have had negative effects on Iranians' health status, leading to increased living costs, unemployment, and limited access to essential medicines 56 . Given the consequences of negative population growth, the impact of population increase on mental health, and the problems caused by international sanctions, necessary measures should be taken to increase the population.

The study found that there were higher frequencies of birth and death in men compared to women, with higher sex ratios at birth and death for males in all four years. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased death rates among men, both globally and in specific countries like Massachusetts, Sweden, and China 57 , 58 , 59 , 60 . The higher mortality in men may be influenced by social factors such as smoking and lower handwashing rates, as well as biological factors related to sex hormones 57. Women generally have stronger immune responses, potentially due to genetic factors. Men also have more angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), receptors, making them more susceptible to the virus. Smoking, which is more common among men, can further increase vulnerability to COVID-19 60 . Understanding mortality rates in different age and gender groups can provide important insights for targeted interventions.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching effects on marriage and divorce rates, birth rates, and death rates. Quarantine measures and fear of the virus influenced people's decisions, resulting in changes in these demographic indicators. While marriage and divorce rates were immediately affected, birth rates experienced a time lag. This can be attributed to the time lag between decisions regarding starting to have children and the actual births. The pandemic has led to an increase in death rates, with individuals avoiding medical attention due to COVID-19 fears. Vaccination and effective treatment strategies are crucial in mitigating this impact. Financial aid and support for families are important due to the role of economic problems in couples' decisions. It is vital to monitor these indicators and implement strategies that prioritize public health and well-being.

Limitations and suggests

The study has several limitations. Firstly, being an ecological study, it cannot establish a strong causal relationship between variables, but it can generate hypotheses. Secondly, confounding variables were not controlled, making it difficult to determine true cause and effect. Additionally, the use of aggregated data prevented differentiation between COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 deaths, limiting the understanding of the disease’s impact on mortality rates. Future studies should focus on collecting detailed data to separate COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 deaths for a more comprehensive analysis. It is also recommended to investigate reasons for marriage and divorce post-pandemic and analyze marriage, divorce, birth, and death rates in the second year after the pandemic to determine if trends persist or change over time.

thesis statement for marriage and divorce

What is the thesis statement on marriage and divorce?

User Avatar

There is no standard thesis statement for anything. When you write a thesis statement, you need to state your argument (what ever opinion you have on marriage and divorce), and then use the rest of the essay to back up your position.

Divorce: Agreement or Disagreement Essay

According to Kuehn (4), “divorce is a legal process that ends a marriage.” Divorce can also be described as a period when families fail to overcome the major changes they experience. It is often associated with a disagreement between couples. Many people consider it an inappropriate way of solving problems. However, I completely disagree with the statement “if I were to get married, I would never consider divorce to be a viable option for any reason.” I think it is right for a couple to divorce if they think they are not compatible with each other.

Role of love in a relationship

I believe that love is the fundamental element of any serious relationship, that is why no one on earth can withstand a loveless relationship. Love makes marriages grow strong. It enables couples to share views and ideas, hence enhancing individual prosperity. On the other hand, the absence of love contributes to the deterioration of many relationships. The absence of love leads to a misunderstanding that results in a lack of communication between partners (Seiden and Billett, Chapter 2).

Evidence also points to the fact that people without affection portray uncouth behavior. For instance, people who do not love each other indulge in occasional quarrels and wars. The absence of love also makes many people avoid discussions of relationships, which affects the ability of partners to solve disagreements. Relationship discussions aid couples in learning the differences between them (Seiden and Billett Chapter 2). Thus, it is crucial for parties that do not love each other to divorce to avoid turmoil in marriage.

Antisocial behavior

It is challenging and unbearable to withstand any antisocial behavior from anyone, including the partners. I also agree with Emery Robert’s (42) argument that parental antisocial behavior contributes immensely to divorce. Occasionally, most people marry to have companions with whom they can share personal issues. However, some people tend to avoid socializing with their partners after some periods of marriage. Lack of socialization in a marriage is often associated with the discomfort that makes many married people involved in activities that may result in betrayal and exposure to some diseases.

Some marriage partners are also very secretive of their lives, aspirations, and medical conditions that may affect their union. On most occasions, lovers end up in marriages without informing their partners of their sensitive issues. Confiding in a person reluctant to share anything with his partner is dangerous since, on most occasions, it may make another party get into trouble. Thus, it is crucial for a couple that does not socialize freely to divorce.

Marriage cheating

I doubt if there is any person on this earth that can withstand cheating in marriage (Clarke-Stewart and Brentano 5). Bearing cheating of a partner in a marriage is not accepted worldwide. Cheating in marriage can result in the transmission of deadly diseases such as AIDS among partners. It leads also to the diversion of not only love but also resources as most people that cheat in marriages neglect their family responsibilities. I also believe that most cases of unfaithfulness are caused by emotional affairs. On most occasions, people who lack self-control indulge in affairs that may lead to family problems (Seiden and Billett Chapter 2).

Additionally, some people hurt their partners by expressing love and care for their former spouses. Thus, it is crucial for a person who is cheated on to seek a divorce to avoid heartbreaks and contraction of sexually transmitted diseases.

Effects of emotions

According to what takes place in many societies, it is very difficult to associate freely with emotional people. Emotional people are used to quarreling and disagreeing with everything and everyone in society. They have also a tendency of taking everything, including even jokes, very serious. On most occasions, they cannot differ jokes from personal abuse, and their habit of being too secretive also worries very much. However, most people are unaware of the emotional state of their partners as they marry them and find out about the latter after living with them for some time. Since it is difficult to stay with an emotional person as a wife or husband, it may be better for one to seek a divorce in such a case.

Difference in likes

I also believe it is very difficult for persons with different likes to stay together; the difference in likes between married individuals leads to confrontations and mental tortures. They also make married people not only perform activities differently but also disregard each other’s opinions. Thus, it may be a way-out for the parties involved to divorce in such a situation to grant themselves and their children an opportunity of advancing in life.

I know it is very difficult for any person to build a family and plan his/her future with an immature person as a spouse. Immature people are often associated with immature actions. In addition to making the wrong decisions, they also indulge in shameful activities. Immature people also love being supervised, which is an activity that is very difficult to implement. Additionally, it is very difficult to come into agreement with immature persons because of their childish decisions and opinions. If a person marries immature individual hope that his/her partner will change, he may be disappointed because, as a rule, his/her spouse may change, but he/she may not like it. Thus, such people should seek a divorce in case they cannot bear the immaturity of the partner.

It is also evident that none will tolerate having a drug abuser as a wife or a husband. Drug addicts make their families suffer from violence. Additionally, most drug addicts are hard not only to manage but also to share ideas with. Thus, it is crucial for a partner who is exposed to abuses in a family to seek divorce.

Social differences

I believe it is hard for people from different backgrounds to build a family because any family requires a solid foundation, i.e. material basis. That is why people having different social statuses may face the great challenge of accepting the differences in education, views, etc. Additionally, the family members and in-laws from a low stratum tend to be problematic. Thus, the marriage of such people may be broken by the inability to accept social differences and go through economic challenges.

In conclusion, divorce is a societal lawful process that takes place between disagreeing partners in a marriage. These differences are mainly caused by variation in ideas and likes. Loss of love, cheatings, emotions, and immaturity have also been found to trigger divorce. Most people also end up in divorce because of drug abuse and lack of communication as a result of antisocial behavior. The majority of people consider it an inappropriate way of solving marriage problems. However, most of the marriage problems are beyond human ability and owing to the reasons mentioned, I completely disagree with the topic “if I were to get married, I would never consider divorce to be a viable option for any reason.”

Christ Fellowship of Kansas City

Divorce, Remarriage, and Church Membership

This article is in two parts. Part 1 is a brief summary of our doctrinal conclusions concerning divorce and remarriage. Part 2 concerns the way our position affects church membership. Both parts are excerpted from Divorce and Remarriage: A Permanence View , by Daryl Wingerd, Jim Elliff, Jim Chrisman, and Steve Burchett (Kansas City/Parkville, MO: Christian Communicators Worldwide, 2009). Those who wish to study our position in more detail may obtain a copy of this book from one of our elders.

Divorce and remarriage are painful subjects to address biblically in our culture, for at least three reasons. First, the practice of divorce has reached epidemic proportions even among those who profess to be Christians. Nearly every Christian knows someone in his or her local church who has been divorced. Second, most Christians who divorce also remarry, usually with the strong encouragement of other Christians but often without a thorough, personal understanding of what the Bible has to say about second marriages. Third, not everyone agrees as to what is the biblical position regarding divorce and remarriage. As a result, Christians in potential divorce and/or remarriage situations often receive conflicting counsel from different, though equally qualified and respected, pastors and teachers.

A Summary of Our Doctrinal Conclusions

After conducting an intensive study of this topic, the elders of Christ Fellowship have come to believe that the Bible’s teaching on marriage, divorce, and remarriage may be summarized in three points:

1. The one-flesh union created in marriage is permanent until death.

Summary: In the Bible, the remarriage of a divorced person is consistently said to be an act of adultery. This indicates that the one-flesh union created by God when a marriage begins is not dissolved by divorce.

Jesus referred to the nature and permanence of this union when He said, “So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate” (Matt. 19:6; Mark 10:8-9). Jesus’ language shows the couple as passive, with God Himself joining them together. Additionally, the New Testament makes it clear that no one other than God can dissolve the one-flesh union. Divorce does not end that which God has established as permanent. Despite civil laws and personal opinions to the contrary, only death, which God alone ordains, can dissolve the one-flesh union. We can be certain that this is true because remarriage after divorce is described as an act of adultery. As Jesus said,

. . . whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Matt. 5:32b)

Whoever divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her; and if she herself divorces her husband and marries another man, she is committing adultery. (Mark 10:11-12)

Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries one who is divorced from a husband commits adultery. (Luke 16:18)

The Apostle Paul stated it this way:

For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning the husband. So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man. (Rom. 7:2-3)

An act of sex between a man and a woman is called “adultery” only when it violates an existing marital union. Because remarriage after divorce (while the original spouse is living) is called “adultery,” it is evident that the one-flesh union with the former spouse still exists in some form. The union created by God in marriage is not un -created by the act of divorce.

2. Initiating a divorce is never lawful.

Summary: The defining principle of the Bible’s teaching on divorce is that it is always unlawful, and there are no compelling reasons to see this prohibition as less than absolute.

Jesus prohibited divorce categorically, using absolute or universal terms, when He said, “What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate” (Matt. 19:6; Mark 10:9). The point of the command is to say that man (whether male or female) should never attempt to destroy what God has created. In both Matthew 19 and Mark 10, this statement was Jesus’ answer to the Pharisee’s question about whether or not it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife. Jesus’ answer to this question was an unqualified “No.”

Paul’s prohibition of divorce in 1 Corinthians 7 is in perfect agreement with the teaching of Christ. When the question of divorce is addressed, Paul responds as follows:

. . . the wife should not leave her husband. (v. 10)

. . . the husband should not divorce his wife. (v. 11)

. . . if any brother has a wife who is an unbeliever, and she consents to live with him, he must not divorce her. (v. 12)

. . . a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. (v. 13)

No less than four times in this chapter Paul says, in effect, “Do not divorce your spouse.” The closest he ever comes to an exception to this rule is in verse 15 where the believing spouse is permitted to cooperate in a divorce if the unbelieving spouse insists on leaving. Paul gives no support for the idea that in certain cases it is lawful to initiate a divorce.

3. Remarrying after divorce is an act of adultery if a former spouse is living.

Summary: Only death dissolves the one-flesh union created by God in marriage. This morally binding union is not dissolved by divorce. Therefore, any remarriage of (or to) a divorced person, prior to the death of the former spouse, is an act of adultery.

As we said in our first point, the one-flesh union created by God in marriage is permanent. Though marriages can be, and frequently are, severed externally in civil, legal ways, the one-flesh union can only be separated by God Himself through the death of one or both spouses. This is why marriage to any other person after divorce, as long as the original spouse is living, is consistently called “adultery.” As Jesus said,

. . . whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Matt. 5:32)

These verses clearly provide no exceptions to the rule that remarriage after divorce is an act of adultery. The second part of Luke 16:18 even seems to disallow a wife’s remarriage in the event that her husband has divorced her and has already married someone else. Furthermore, contrary to some interpretations of Paul in 1 Corinthians 7, the apostle does not soften Jesus’ stance against remarriage. Even in the event that a divorce does occur, Paul says,

But to the married I give instructions, not I, but the Lord, that the wife should not leave her husband ( but if she does leave, she must remain unmarried, or else be reconciled to her husband ), and that the husband should not divorce his wife. (1 Cor. 7:10-11, emphasis added)

The only case in which Paul permits remarriage is when the former spouse has died. This permission is stated clearly in two places:

For the married woman is bound by law to her husband while he is living; but if her husband dies, she is released from the law concerning her husband. So then, if while her husband is living she is joined to another man, she shall be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law so that she is not an adulteress though she is joined to another man. (Rom. 7:2-3)

A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. (1 Cor. 7:39)

The three points explained above constitute our position on divorce and remarriage. We call our position the “permanence” view because it recognizes that the one-flesh union created in marriage is permanent, separated only by death. We do not believe the integrity of the Scriptures concerning this difficult and sensitive topic can be preserved without arriving at these three conclusions. What follows is an explanation of the most significant objection to our view from conservative, Bible-believing Christians, along with our analysis of one particular verse that is critical to understanding this matter.

A Brief Explanation of the Opposition to Our View

Most evangelical Christians believe there is at least one exception to the no-divorce/no-remarriage statements made by Jesus and Paul. The disagreement centers around Jesus’ words in Matthew 19:9:

And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality , and marries another woman commits adultery. (Matt. 19:9, emphasis added)

Many have come to understand this statement, with the italicized “exception clause,” as permission to divorce and remarry when a marriage covenant has been violated by one spouse’s sexual unfaithfulness (in other words, by adultery). In our view, this permissive understanding of Matthew 19:9 is at odds with Jesus’ categorical prohibition of divorce in Matthew 19:6 (and Mark 10:8), as well as His consistent prohibition of remarriage after divorce (Matt. 5:32; Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18).

Did Jesus actually permit in verse 9 what He had just said “no man” may ever do in verse 6? Did He permit remarriage after divorce for adultery despite His unqualified prohibitions of all remarriage of (or to) a divorced person whose former spouse is still living, as recorded in other places in the Bible? Most importantly, should interpreters of the Bible allow Matthew 19:9, with its somewhat ambiguous wording, to be the determining passage when so many other factors, not only in Jesus’ teaching but also Paul’s, point in the opposite direction? Is it proper, in other words, to allow a single, less-explicit text to override what is plainly stated in other places? We believe the answer to each of these questions is “no.” We understand how Matthew 19:9 can be understood this way, but we believe there is a much better interpretation, one that harmonizes all the biblical divorce and remarriage texts and fits the historical context of Matthew’s gospel.

The “Betrothal” Understanding of Matthew 19:9

In Matthew 19:9 (and similarly in Matt. 5:32), when Jesus prohibited divorce and remarriage “except for immorality [Greek: porneia ],” we believe He was excluding from His prohibition the annulment of a Jewish betrothal contract on the grounds of pre-marital sexual immorality. In Jewish culture these legal annulments were referred to as “divorces,” and were considered necessary when one of the parties to the premarital agreement was found to have been unchaste before the wedding occurred. Jesus did not want to be misunderstood as prohibiting this legitimate act of “divorce” (actually annulment) along with His categorical prohibition of divorce in the context of a consummated marriage. This understanding of Jesus’ teaching on divorce and remarriage has been called the “betrothal” view.

In support of the betrothal view we present the following four arguments:

1. Matthew’s usage of the word porneia (fornication) seems to be very specific and limited.

Each time he uses porneia he distinguishes it from the word moicheia (adultery). Matthew uses porneia three times in his gospel:

. . . but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity [porneia], makes her commit adultery [the verb form of moicheia]. (5:32)

For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries [from the root moicheia], fornications [from the root porneia], thefts, false witnesses, slanders. (15:19)

And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality [porneia], and marries another woman commits adultery [the verb form of moicheia]. (19:9)

Notice that each time Matthew uses porneia (fornication), he also uses either moicheia (adultery) or its verb form in the same sentence, presumably to clarify that two different classes of sin are being described. In Matthew 5:32 and 19:9, if the exception clauses were meant to describe sexual unfaithfulness in the context of a consummated marriage (which is always adultery, not fornication) it would be hard to explain why Matthew would not have used moicheia instead of porneia . Where he describes the sin of adultery elsewhere, he always uses moicheia , not porneia (cf. 5:27, 28, 31; 15:19; 19:18). The fact is, if the sin of adultery were what Jesus intended to describe in the exception clauses, moicheia would have much more clearly explained His meaning and would have been much more consistent with Matthew’s writing pattern.

2. In John’s gospel the word porneia (fornication) is only used once, in John 8:41.

To understand the context in which the word was used, note that Jesus had just challenged the Pharisees’ claim that they were children of Abraham (vv. 39-40). In verse 44 He calls them children of the devil. In the midst of this heated conversation, the Pharisees replied, “We were not born of fornication [ porneia ]; we have one Father, God” (v. 41).

The unbelieving Pharisees clearly could not allow themselves to believe that Jesus was actually born of a virgin. If they were to admit that He was born in this way, it would be very difficult to then deny that He was the fulfillment of the virgin birth prophecy in Isaiah 7:14—“Immanuel,” “God with us”—which would also make Him the fulfillment of Isaiah 9:6-7, Daniel 7:13-14, and Micah 5:2. In other words, the virgin birth served as proof that Jesus was the King of the Jews who was to sit forever on the throne of David. So they had to deny the virgin birth. But the only way to deny Jesus’ virgin birth was to claim that Mary had gotten pregnant through intercourse with Joseph or some other man prior to the marriage being legitimately consummated. This would have made Jesus one who was “born of fornication [ porneia ].” The point is, John’s use of the word porneia to describe what was perceived by the Pharisees as Mary’s premarital sexual activity indicates that this single word was commonly understood by first-century Jews to describe the particular sin of pre-marital sex, not the sin of adultery.

3. Matthew is the only gospel writer who includes the exception clauses (5:32; 19:9).

He is also the only one who describes Joseph’s intent to divorce Mary, which, as Matthew indicates, was the righteous thing for Joseph to do (Matt. 1:18-19). Since Matthew is the only one who describes Joseph and the situation in this way, it logically follows that Matthew would be the one to include the fact that divorce (annulment) in these specific situations was not unlawful. Otherwise, without the exception clause, Jesus would be seen as prohibiting what Matthew had earlier called a righteous action.

4. According to nearly universal scholarly opinion, Matthew’s gospel was intended for a primarily Jewish audience.

His purpose was to convince Jews that Jesus was the Messiah, their King. Since Jews in particular would understand Jewish betrothal laws and would therefore wonder if Jesus were prohibiting even this type of divorce, it would naturally follow that Matthew would be the one to include the exception clause for the sake of his Jewish readers.

Mark and Luke, on the other hand, writing primarily to Greek and Roman readers, saw no need to include the exception clause when they recorded Jesus’ teaching about divorce and remarriage (cf. Mark 10:11-12; Luke 16:18). Greeks and Romans also had betrothal arrangements (as is evident in 1 Corinthians 7:25-38), but betrothal was not as legally binding for non-Jews as for Jews. It could be ended without legal “divorce” proceedings. Because of this, Greeks and Romans would not have easily associated the term “divorce” with anything other than the termination of a consummated marriage. Mark and Luke may have recognized that including the phrase, “except for immorality,” would mislead Greek and Roman readers into thinking that Jesus was allowing an actual exception to His no-divorce/no-remarriage teaching in the context of a consummated marriage. In other words, they may have omitted the exception clause in order to preserve Jesus’ true intent, which was to disallow all divorce.

When all of these factors are considered, it seems certain to us that when Jesus said, “Whoever divorces his wife, except for porneia ,” He was not permitting divorce in the context of a fully consummated marriage when adultery occurs. Instead, He was clarifying that His categorical prohibition of divorce did not apply to the termination of a betrothal agreement when one party was found to be unchaste prior to the consummation of the marriage. Jesus was saying that in these situations, a legal annulment (for which the Jews used the same terminology as legal divorce) was permissible.

Again, the betrothal interpretation of Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 is merely one part of the investigation that led us to adopt the permanence view. The permanence view itself is fully stated by the three points explained at the beginning. It is also important to note that our permanence position is not completely dependent upon the betrothal view. There are actually seven (if not more) ways in which the exception clause has been understood. Of these seven views, five lead to a no-divorce conclusion and six lead to a no-remarriage conclusion. We offer the “betrothal” understanding of the exception clause as what we believe to be the most consistent way to harmonize all of the divorce/remarriage texts in the Bible. But even if one were to remain perpetually unsure of precisely how to explain the exception clause, the preponderance of evidence found in the other passages should lead to a no-divorce/no-remarriage conclusion.

The Permanence View and Church Membership

Q: Can a person be a member of your church if he or she disagrees with the permanence view?

A: Yes, in most cases. Not every member of our church will immediately or easily embrace the permanence view. Some may never come to full agreement. This difference of opinion does not, in itself, prevent anyone from becoming or remaining a member of our church. Regardless of personal convictions about divorce and remarriage, however, all members and prospective members need to be aware of the following expectations associated with membership:

  • Members are encouraged to study matters related to divorce and remarriage and discuss their personal views with other members, even if they disagree with the permanence view. There are limitations to this freedom, however. No member may encourage another member to act contrary to the church’s position, speak disparagingly of those who hold this view, or behave divisively in other ways.
  • All members must acknowledge that the permanence view will be the guiding conviction in disciplinary matters related to divorce and remarriage.
  • Members who have not embraced the permanence view must agree not to complicate and/or delay disciplinary actions related to wrongful divorce and/or remarriage by seeking to debate the permanence view during a disciplinary process.
  • Any member may abstain from affirming a disciplinary action related to divorce and/or remarriage on the basis of his or her personal convictions, but all members must respect and abide by disciplinary decisions and actions deemed appropriate and necessary by the majority.

Q: You said a person who disagrees can be a member “in most cases.” What is the exception to this general rule?

A: The exception concerns those who disagree with the permanence view, but have divorced a spouse and/or remarried after divorce while a former spouse was still living. Divorce and wrongful remarriage are serious sins. To divorce a spouse is to disobey Christ’s command not to separate what God has joined together (Matt. 19:6; Mark 10:8). To remarry after divorce while the former spouse is living is to commit an act of adultery (Matt. 5:32; 19:9; Mark 10:9-10; Luke 16:18; Rom. 7:3). As with any other significant act or pattern of sin formerly committed by a person who seeks membership with our church, sins related to divorce and remarriage must be repented of before church membership can be granted. The person needs to sincerely acknowledge that his or her former actions were sinful. Until such an acknowledgement is forthcoming, our church has no option but to view the person as unrepentant with respect to the sin(s) that were committed. It cannot be right to overlook in an unrepentant prospective member what would cause the disciplinary removal of an unrepentant member .

Q: Are you saying that you cannot receive these people because they are not Christians?

A: No, that is not what we are saying. We are sensitive to the widespread influence of conservative, Bible-believing Christians who, for centuries, have taught that divorce and remarriage are permitted in cases of adultery or desertion by a disobedient spouse. Some who seek membership with our church, and who have divorced a spouse and/or remarried after divorce, may have been fully convinced that their actions were permissible on the basis of this prevailing view. Even a sincere believer could misconstrue a few Bible verses as permitting divorce and/or remarriage in cases of adultery or desertion (specifically Matt. 5:32; 19:9; 1 Cor. 7:15, 27-28). While we are firmly convinced of the view we now hold, the confusion among well-meaning, Bible-believing Christians is understandable.

Q: Are you adding to the basic requirements for church membership (i.e., conversion and baptism) by insisting upon repentance in this specific area?

A: No, we do not believe we are. The practice of dealing with former sinful actions in the membership process is common to churches who work hard to maintain a regenerate membership. Discussions about former sins are not focused only on the issue of divorce and remarriage. Any notable sins for which a church would enact discipline are part of the intimate discussions with prospective members. We welcome all who are repentant of known sins, because repentance is one necessary mark of a true Christian.

In the end, what we are asking of people in this category is that they enter into membership with the same attitude toward their former divorce(s) and/or remarriage(s) as toward any other former sins—that is, with a heartfelt acknowledgment of whatever sin was involved. Depending on the circumstances of the individual divorce and/or remarriage, this acknowledgment of past sin may focus more on the act(s) of disobedience than on an attitude of rebellion, because their sin may have been committed without knowledge of error or premeditation.

Q: Why would you require repentance prior to membership in the case of a person who did not know or understand biblical instructions regarding divorce and remarriage, or one who knows the Bible and is fully convinced that he or she did what God permits?

A: In the civil realm, ignorance of the law does not exempt a person from facing the consequences of the law. The same is true when a person misinterprets the law and, as a result, does what is unlawful. Such a person may be less culpable because his crime was not committed intentionally, but he or she was nonetheless disobedient to his government. We believe this is a biblical pattern as well. For Old Testament Jews there was a category of sin called “unintentional.” There was even a special sacrifice prescribed for such sins. Before the sacrifice was offered, however, the sin(s) involved, committed in ignorance, had to be brought to the guilty person’s attention by others. Then, by offering a sacrifice, the guilty person acknowledged his or her actions as sinful. This acknowledgement through sacrifice for unintentional sin was required for leaders as well as common people (cf. Lev. 4:22-31).

This Old Covenant law is instructive in principle for us as New Covenant believers. We too may be guilty before we realize we have sinned, but when our sin is made known to us, repentance is required. This principle is evident in Jesus’ instructions in Matthew 18:15-17, in that additional witnesses, sometimes even the whole church, must seek to convince the offending person that he or she has sinned.

We want you to know that we have also repented of our former views on divorce and remarriage, though, similarly, we did not believe we were acting outside of God’s will at the time. Our wrong views resulted in errant counsel and likely convinced some people to disobey God—a serious and dangerous sin for those who teach the Bible and pastor churches (cf. James 3:1). Part of our sin was in the failure to go deep enough into the divorce/remarriage issue to find out the truth. It was not easy to come to this conclusion about our own culpability, but having been convinced by Scripture, we have willingly repented. Now we are asking prospective members who have acted sinfully with respect to divorce and/or remarriage to do the same.

Q: What about already-existing members who divorced and/or remarried wrongfully according to the permanence view, were received into membership before you arrived at your new position, yet still disagree with your view? Would you enact church discipline on the basis of your new position?

A: Along with the obligation to welcome new members in a manner that is consistent with our convictions, we have the competing obligation to honor the covenant into which we enter when a person becomes a member. In this case, the person has done nothing since becoming a member to break the membership covenant, and the bond of love with the church has grown strong. Breaking such a bond at this point, when no additional sins have been committed, would undoubtedly do more harm than good. Because of these factors, we intend to maintain unbroken fellowship with members who are in this situation, while holding strictly to our permanence stance in every other situation.

We hope that members in the above situation will study the permanence position carefully and prayerfully as they maintain a teachable spirit and pursue doctrinal unity (as all members agree to do in submitting to our membership agreement [1] ). Only if an already-existing member were to commit additional sin related to divorce and/or remarriage, or become divisive about doctrinal differences, would church discipline be considered.

Final Thoughts

We want to deal with each member and prospective member lovingly on this issue, and with grace. We realize that a new understanding of the sinfulness of past actions may be hard to receive and almost startling, especially if sincere efforts were made to obey God. We have struggled with a proper response to this dilemma, discussing various approaches of accommodation. We trust that all incoming members will realize that though we are conscience-bound, we will also empathize when discussing these matters. We will carefully work through the circumstances of the former divorce and/or remarriage in order to help the prospective member understand what the proper response(s) would be.

Fundamentally, we believe that with regard to membership, taking actions that are consistent with our convictions will be more helpful for the church, the kingdom of God as a whole, the culture around us, and even the individual seeking membership. The problem of discernment in this area, in our view, was not so common in the earliest churches. We believe first-century Christians would have understood the words of Jesus and Paul just as we are explaining them. We are regretful that the history of the church has brought us to the point where such issues produce misunderstanding and confusion. We participated in that more recent history ourselves. But having sought out, to the best of our ability, God’s will about the matter from Scripture, we must now act in a manner that is consistent with our convictions. We fully believe that our actions will prevent divorces. Most importantly, by promoting marriage permanence in this way we will be valuing and honoring marriage the way Paul did in Ephesians 5:25-33 when he likened the relationship of a husband and wife to the relationship of Christ and His church.

Lastly, wrongful divorce and wrongful remarriage are forgivable sins. We hope every true believer will find comfort here, at the heart of our faith in Christ. When Jesus died for our sins, He did not neglect to atone for our misdeeds in this critical area. A person who has acted as wrongly as it is possible to act in this matter may be fully forgiven and may certainly have a fulfilled life of service to God. Furthermore, though a high percentage of second marriages fail, it is also astoundingly true that God mercifully blesses many that were started the wrong way. This is a mystery for which we can all be extremely grateful.

Common Issues in a Divorce

Definitions.

  • More Info About Divorces
  • Physical Custody: a parent's right to have the child live with them. Usually discussed in "overnights" with each parent in a given year.
  • Legal Custody: a parent's right to make decisions for the child about issues like daycare, school, religion, or medical care. Not always related to physical custody.
  • Child Visitation: the term for when the child spends time with each parent. Not always counted in terms of overnight visits.
  • Child Support: money paid by one parent to the other for the benefit of the minor child.

Think about what each spouse owns, individually or with the other spouse.

  • Real: Considered land, a home, or a mineral interest.
  • Personal: Items like furniture, cars, and even pets.
  • Financial assets: Retirement accounts, bank accounts, or investments.
  • Debts/obligations: Money owed on loans, credit cards, or to other creditors. A mortgage is considered a marital debt, but can be split separately from ownership in the property.

The judge will look at how the property is owned. Oklahoma law splits property into one of two categories: Separate and Marital. Separate property is usually not considered part of the divorce and it will remain with the spouse who owned it before marriage.

  • Separate: land or personal possessions owned before the date of marriage or that have been held completely separate from the marriage.
  • Marital: land or personal possessions purchased or created during the marriage. Does not always matter if the property is titled to only one spouse.
  • Separate Maintenance/Alimony: money paid by one spouse to the other to cushion the financial blow of a divorce. Usually only temporary and intended to support the spouse while they look for other income.
  • Name Change: Oklahoma allows a woman to go back to the last name she used before the marriage.

A Common Law Marriage does not have a ceremony. It must be proven in court by the person claiming that a Common Law Marriage exists. A Common Law Marriage may exist when the parties agree at the same time that they are married. This is commonly proven through actions by the “spouses” consistent with a marriage, saying to others they are married, living together, and/or the community recognizing the marriage as valid.

*Only a judge in court can determine if a Common Law Marriage actually exists.

This is the reason why the judge would grant a divorce. Other grounds exist, but incompatibility is most commonly used. This is considered "no fault". Incompatibility as a reason for divorce makes it easy for judge to grant the divorce.

Only one spouse has to agree that the marriage is beyond repair for the judge to grant the final order in the divorce.

Petition - A formal request made through the court that starts a legal case.

Petitioner - The person who started the case, typically using a petition.

Respondent - The person to whom the petitioner is asking for something.

Party - A person who is part of a court case like a divorce.

Temporary Order - A decision made between the parties or the judge about issues within the marriage. This order will be overwritten when the case concludes with a final order.

Final Order - A decision made between the parties or judge about all issues brought up in the divorce. This order is enforceable through the court and will remain in place until changed by a judge in court.

Service - Officially providing the paperwork starting a legal case to the other party.

Entry of Appearance and Waiver - A document signed by the Respondent agreeing to accept service and the terms of the potential final order.

90 Day Period - Divorces with children must wait 90 days from the date of filing the petition to finish with a final order.

Modification - Opening the case again after the final order has been filed. Must meet certain criteria to reopen a case.

Parenting Class - A specific child custody class required by Oklahoma law for divorcing parties.

Hearings on Trump's criminal cases in New York and Georgia

By Kara Scannell , Lauren del Valle , Jeremy Herb , Zachary Cohen , Jason Morris, Nick Valencia , Kristina Sgueglia, Dan Berman , Tori B. Powell and Matt Meyer , CNN

Defense presses Nathan Wade on divorce records where he said he didn’t have sexual relations outside marriage

From CNN’s Holmes Lybrand

Craig Gillen questions Nathan Wade, not pictured, during a hearing at Fulton County courthouse in Atlanta on Thursday.

A defense attorney pushed the lead prosecutor on the Georgia case against Donald Trump and allies , Nathan Wade, on answers he gave in divorce records in 2023, when he said he had not had sexual relations with a person outside the marriage, despite his relationship with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

Craig Gillen, an attorney for Trump’s co-defendant David Shafer, pressed Wade on this subject in an attempt to undermine Wade’s veracity. Gillen asked Wade whether he had engaged in a sexual relationship with Willis prior to his claim in divorce records.

“I’m saying, during the course of my marriage, I did not have a sexual relationship with anyone,” Wade said, drawing a distinction between when he felt the marriage ended and it its legal conclusion, as the divorce has not been finalized.

Gillen pushed back, noting that the statement in the divorce filing was over relationships "from the date of marriage to the present."

“Your answer to this interrogatory is false, is it not?” Gillen said, to which Wade continued to say his answer was correct.

Wade previously testified his personal relationship with Willis began in early 2022, and acknowledged on the stand Thursday that they had sexual relations.

Analysis: Focus on Georgia prosecutors could help Trump in jury pool

From CNN's Katelyn Polantz

Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade looks on during a hearing in the case of the State of Georgia v. Donald John Trump at the Fulton County Courthouse on February 15 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Donald Trump may be winning politically on Thursday by shifting attention to the personal lives of prosecutors pursuing the criminal case against him in Georgia.

But his lawyers have also looked for opportunities like these in the criminal cases he faces to plant the seeds for a legal win later on by damaging prosecutors’ credibility enough to help him before a jury.

Trump has repeatedly tried to claim publicly, including in remarks outside of a Manhattan courtroom Thursday, that he is the victim of a Biden administration conspiracy. Defense teams sometimes aim for these types of smears of prosecutors to help them by seeping into the public consciousness. When it comes time to pick jurors, distrust in the justice system or prosecutors could help Trump if even one selected juror wants to acquit because of feelings the case wasn’t fair.

It’s called jury nullification — and it’s a flaw in the justice system courts strenuously try to avoid in the courtroom. However, a nullified jury — unwilling to vote based on the facts of the case before them — can pop up sometimes, especially in high-profile or controversial cases.

It still remains to be seen, however, if the most immediate fallout of the Fani Willis and Nathan Wade situation is the top prosecutors’ removal from the Trump case, which could potentially derail a trial indefinitely.

Fact check: Trump wasn't "stuck" in court and didn't have South Carolina campaign events scheduled today

From CNN's Daniel Dale and Kristen Holmes

Former President Donald Trump speaks with his lawyer during a court hearing Manhattan Criminal Court in New York on Thursday.

Before entering the courtroom in New York on Thursday morning, Trump claimed the hush money case against him is “election interference.” He also argued that it is interfering with his ability to campaign in South Carolina ahead of the February 24 Republican presidential primary there.

“How can you run for election and be sitting in a courthouse in Manhattan all day long? I’m supposed to be in South Carolina right now, where other people are, and where, again — this is where I should be. I shouldn’t be in a courthouse,” Trump said.

Trump was even more explicit in comments after leaving the courtroom later in the morning, saying, “So instead of being in South Carolina and other states, campaigning, I’m stuck here.”

Facts First :  Trump wasn’t “stuck” in the courthouse in New York on Thursday. In fact, he was not required to attend any part of the hearing, since Judge Juan Merchan had waived his pretrial appearances .

Rather, Trump voluntarily chose to appear at the hearing after considering instead attending a hearing related to charges he faces in Georgia.

And he had not been scheduled to be in South Carolina on Thursday even before he made the decision to attend the New York hearing. His next scheduled campaign appearance in the state is next week. His next rally after the Thursday hearing is a  Saturday event in Michigan .

Trump is not planning to fly to South Carolina after the New York hearing. He is planning to fly back to Florida, where he lives.

Morning session features exhaustive questioning of Nathan Wade

From CNN's Devan Cole and Holmes Lybrand

Defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant speaks during the hearing at the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta on Thursday.

The lead prosecutor in the Fulton County election case is facing an exhaustive series of questions by a defense attorney who is trying to provide the court with an understanding of his financial ties with District Attorney Fani Willis.

Defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant has been questioning lead prosecutor Nathan Wade for over an hour, with a good portion of it delving deep into how he shared travel expenses with Willis during trips the two took together in recent years to domestic and exotic destinations.

Though Merchant’s questions and Wade’s answers may be difficult for some court watchers to follow, they may eventually play a key role in the Judge Scott McAfee’s decision to disqualify Willis from the case for her potential improper relationship with Wade as the judge is searching for evidence to bolster claims that Willis financially benefited from the relationship.

The timing of when the two began a romantic relationship has also become a point of contention, with Wade continuing to maintain the relationship began in early 2022, after he was selected by Willis to lead the investigation into Trump and his allies.

A former employee of the district attorney’s office, and friend of Willis, Robin Bryant Yeartie testified Thursday that the two began a romantic relationship in late 2019, contradicting Wade’s claims.

Yearti testified that she saw them “hugging, kissing” and displaying affection prior to when Wade started on the case.

Georgia prosecutor says Willis paid him back in cash for vacation expenses because of security concerns

From CNN's Holmes Lybrand

Fulton County Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade speaks during a hearing in the case of State of Georgia v. Donald John Trump at the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 15.

The lead prosecutor in the Georgia election subversion case testified Thursday that District Attorney Fani Willis paid him back in cash for vacations the two took together because of safety concerns.

Defense attorneys for Donald Trump and other co-defendants argue their relationship amounts to a conflict of interest because the prosecutor appointed to lead the case, Nathan Wade, paid for gifts and vacations for Willis during their romantic relationship, in part with money he was paid for his work on the criminal case.

“Traveling with her is a task,” Wade said during a hearing Thursday over whether Willis should be disqualified from the case. “For safety reasons, she would limit her transactions.”

Wade didn’t elaborate on why Willis using a credit card could compromise her safety. Wade testified that during trips, Willis paid cash for excursions on at least one vacation and paid back Wade for plane flights and other travel.

“She paid for the excursions so the expenses sort of balanced out,” Wade said.

Wade also said that a trip to Belize with Willis was a birthday present for him, and that while he paid for parts of the trip with his credit card, Willis paid him back for everything.

Explaining why there were no receipts for Willis’s reimbursements and other payments, Wade said he wasn’t keeping a ledger of what he paid for versus what Willis paid for.

The court has recessed for lunch and will return in 45 minutes.

Biden campaign braces for media coverage of Trump's legal sagas

From CNN's MJ Lee and Arlette Saenz

President Joe Biden's campaign advisers have long been sensitive to media coverage of Donald Trump and the reality that, as the former president’s multiple legal proceedings unfold , there will continue to be a bright spotlight on Trump — for better or for worse.

Senior campaign advisers say they believe it will be important to offer counter-programming focused on Biden during the Trump trials in order to ensure the campaign’s message, and candidate, can consistently break through.

That includes aggressively pushing surrogates, including senior Democratic elected officials, to travel and sell the president’s message and candidacy, as well as trying to maximize coverage of Biden whenever he is on the road.

Still, one Biden campaign adviser said they would reject any suggestion that coverage of the Trump trial in Georgia , in particular, was a net-positive for the former president. Footage of Trump putting up a fight in that context might appeal to his existing base, the adviser said, but may do little to sway voters who are already troubled by Trump’s legal issues and conduct.

Biden has nothing on his public schedule — official or political — on Thursday as of right now. And the campaign has shown no signs of shifting from its strategy of having Biden not comment on the legal proceedings as they play out.

Nikki Haley says Trump's March 25 trial and legal drama will lead to more losses for the GOP

From CNN's Kylie Atwood

Nikki Haley speaks at a campaign event at Summerville Country Club on February 13 in Summerville, South Carolina.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is reiterating her case that former President Donald Trump’s legal drama will hurt the GOP at the ballot box, pointing to Trump’s busy court schedule today and in the coming weeks.

“Donald Trump is in court today. There will be a verdict on another case tomorrow . And he has a trial starting March 25. Meanwhile, he’s spending millions of campaign donations on legal fees. All of this chaos will only lead to more losses for Republicans up and down the ticket,” Haley tweeted.

Haley’s campaign has not commented on how the March 25 criminal trial start date for Trump impacts the way it is thinking about her campaign. The former South Carolina governor has vowed to stay in the race through the South Carolina primary on February 24 and a series of Super Tuesday contests on March 5.

Earlier this week, Haley said she will uphold her commitment to back the GOP presidential nominee, but also claimed without evidence that the American people would not back a convicted criminal.

Haley is in Dallas today for a rally and a fundraiser.

Top prosecutor maintains his relationship with Fani Willis began in 2022 and they split travel expenses

Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade testifies during a hearing on the Georgia election interference case on Thursday in Atlanta.

Nathan Wade, the top prosecutor selected by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis on the Georgia election subversion case, stuck to his earlier claim that his romantic relationship with Willis began in early 2022 and that they split travel expenses.

When pressed on whether he paid for Willis’ travel when they vacationed together, Wade claimed Willis reimbursed him for a flight in cash. Credit card statements submitted in Wade’s divorce proceedings show he paid for two flights for them in recent years, to San Francisco and Miami.

Wade said he did not have receipts for all of the times Willis reimbursed him for trips.

Earlier testimony undercuts Wade's claim: Robin Bryant Yeartie, a previous witness during Thursday’s hearing on whether to disqualify Willis from the election racketeering case, testified that Willis and Wade began their relationship in late 2019 — before he was selected by Willis to lead the investigation.

Wade was appointed to the case against Donald Trump and his allies in late 2021.

Wade also testified that his previous marriage was broken since 2015, long before his relationship with Willis began.

“My marriage was irretrievably broken” in 2015, Wade said, adding that, “I was free to have a relationship.”

Trump again alleges election interference in criminal case

From CNN's Kristina Sgueglia

Former President Donald Trump lamented again the New York criminal trial, calling it "election interference by (President Joe) Biden, because it's the only way he can think to get elected because he's accomplished nothing."

The former president said he's "honored" to "sit here day after day after day" on something the "greatest legal scholars say — it's not even a crime."

Asked how he would plan to campaign while in court, he shouted back, "I'll do it in the evening."

He earlier told reporters "I'll be here during the day, and I'll be campaigning during the night," taking a dig at the current president, saying "Biden should be doing the same thing but he'll be sleeping." He accused the White House, the New York attorney general, the Department of Justice and the Manhattan district attorney of being coordinated against him.

The former president also addressed recent comments on NATO at the courthouse hallway camera.

"NATO countries have to pay up. They have to pay their bills," Trump said. "They are not paying up, they are not paying what they should, and they laugh at the stupidity of the United States of America where we have a guy that gives 60 billion dollars every time somebody comes and asks for it."

Some context: Eighteen of NATO’s 31 members are expected to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense this year, the treaty organization’s leader said Wednesday. That's the threshold pledged by member countries a decade ago, which serves as a "guideline," not a debt or legal obligation.
