Jobs in Germany

Germany is beautiful dressed in any season, whether it’s the bright yellow fields of spring or the snow covered castles of Bavaria in the winter, the country’s charm is apparent year round.

With a long standing reputation as a leader in research and scientific innovation, jobs in Germany are often focused on these major fields. Although many European economies have declined greatly over the past several years, Germany still remains strong. Working in Germany means you will be part of a dedicated and passionate workforce that values hard work and lengthy holidays.

Berlin . Germany’s capital has a population of 3.5 million people and is home to some of the most riveting historical sites in the country, yet it still has an altogether modern and edgy feel. Berlin is home to Museum Island, the famous Radio Tower, the remains of the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate, and more. It is a wonderful city to live and work in Germany. Very international in nature, people come from all over the globe to acquire jobs in Berlin. The workforce in Berlin is considered the most educated in Germany, with the highest number of researchers and “academics” per capita.

Munich . Bavaria’s capital is the cultural center of Germany’s most powerful economic area. It is located in southeast Germany, where the annual Oktoberfest takes place. Munich is known as the artistic and cultural center of Germany, with architecture that is unrivaled anywhere else in the country. Professions that flourish here include automotive and mechanical engineering, tourism, and information technology .

Cologne . This city sits along the Rhine River in Western Germany and offers up beautiful bridges and the Cologne Cathedral. The gothic structure took over 600 years to finish and the detail it includes looks like it would have required each and every day of the time span to achieve its greatness. Cologne is Germany’s most popular tourist destination and the Kölsche, as those born and raised in Cologne are called, are heralded as jovial welcoming people extremely proud of their lovely city. Engineering, technology, and management positions are popular jobs abroad here, but Cologne is literally the bread and butter for expats interested in jobs in Germany in the hospitality industry.

Heidelberg . A city that is endlessly charming, a large castle sits on the hill overlooking its narrow streets, which are filled with fountains and lined by pubs. Heidelberg is one of the few cities that has managed to go relatively untouched by the bombings of WWII, so it is a true historic gem. It is also an academic city with a large student population. The city’s strong suits are medicine and natural sciences, but Heidelberg is also a haven for entrepreneurs and wineries.

German companies look for skilled workers in a variety of fields, but jobs in Germany are often centered in the STEM fields: Science, Technology , Engineering, and Mathematics . There is a shortage of graduates in these fields and Germany is feeling it, especially since throughout history it has been a leader in research. There are also many opportunities to work abroad in Germany in the manufacturing and healthcare industries, or work in childcare (as an aupair or nanny) and English Teaching or Tutoring.

One of the reasons Germany has so many foreign workers is because it has become a sort of stronghold for other European nations experiencing extreme unemployment, such as Spain. Many people from throughout the European Union have sought to live and work abroad in Germany for this reason.

German Work Environment. The German workplace is highly structured. Your day will be planned and your boss will expect you to abide by the schedule down to the second. Get into the mindset that if you arrive on time you’re late and shoot for a few minutes early. Things are done by the book in Germany; all forms and procedures will need to be followed precisely. This can be a benefit for expats, because this also means Germans don’t typically work late or take their work home with them. Plus, the work week usually runs closer to 35 hours.

Individuals who work in Germany enjoy an average of 35 vacation days a year, some of the best in the world, yet they are still among the most productive in the world as well. It is one of the most best developed countries to work in, in terms of the work life balance.

Don’t expect a quick chat about the weather at the water cooler. There is either meaningful talk or no talk in the German workplace. Politics or something important may come up, but they don’t feel the need to fill silence the way many other cultures do.

It is usually required that you have some knowledge of German. You must also have your education verified by the Central Office of Foreign Education (ZAB). This proves the your education is equal to the German degree.

The average monthly salary ranges from 3,500 to 4,000 EUR, but many of the jobs in Germany popular among expats pay even higher because they are usually specialized. Germans are known to be frugal but also fair when it comes to money, in both social and work environments.

The cost of living in Germany is comparable to the U.S., but taxes can be high. Meal prices will seem consistent as well as most everyday items, such as groceries. Beer, which is sort of like Germany’s calling card, is actually cheaper when you buy it in the supermarket. Plus, it’s not just any beer, it’s some of the world’s best.

Germany has incredible public transportation for both around the country and traveling to other parts of Europe. You can buy long term passes depending on how long you will be living and working in Germany, to make it even more economical.

Tip: If traveling from city to city, you should go to the counter and ask the teller which is the best ticket. For example, Rostock to Hamburg might be 28 Euros, but a Land Ticket which allows you to go anywhere in the state is just 21. This doesn’t apply to every state, but it is a good thing to ask about because the savings can really add up.

The process of finding accommodation and the available variety of options in Germany is very similar to developed countries throughout the western hemisphere. In cities, apartments and semi-detached homes are the norm. The prices will vary depending on the amount of rooms and level of furnishings, but housing in Germany is known to be expensive across the board. Even a one bedroom apartment in most city centers cannot be found for less than $500. Expect to spend a large percentage of your income on housing and utilities.

Hamburg, Munich, and Cologne are some of the more expensive cities in terms of rent. Like most things in Germany, there is a great deal of regulation surrounding renting so expect well laid out guidelines for the process of acquiring accommodations.

Citizens of the United States can enter Germany without a visa and stay for 30 days, but they can’t legally work in Germany during this time. This can be a good period to search for jobs in Germany or complete interviews and applications.

To stay longer than 30 days, you must apply for a Residence Permit, which can be done either beforehand or from within the country after arrival. Then to work in Germany legally, if not expressed on your Residence Permit, you will need to apply for the ability to work in Germany separately. You will need to go to the Immigration Office once you have obtained a job in Germany and apply for a visa based on your new position. The basis used for granting workers visa is whether or not a German citizen could viably fulfill the same role, which makes the process easier for certain skilled workers. As with most things in Germany, the process will be done exactly according to standards.

  • Work Life Balance. Germans are experts in balancing work and play. They are diligent workers that know when to start and when to stop. There isn’t as much pressure for overtime work in Germany and German employees should expect over a month off each year.
  • Titles. Titles are very important in Germany, especially in the workplace. Germans place emphasis on using proper titles Dr., Mr., and Mrs. (Herr, Frau in German).
  • German Culture. It is often said that a circle of Germans can be a hard one to break into and that seems to be true. They tend to be extremely loyal and dependable which are incredible traits in a friend. It might take a little more time, but you will be welcomed and make lifelong friends eventually working abroad in Germany.
  • Festivals. German festivals are a force to be reckoned with; they tend to be large and fun. Try the world famous Oktoberfest or the Frankfurt Book Fair, which is the largest book fair in the world. There are local festivals all over the country.

Various federal overseas jobs are filled through Excepted Service and Nonappropriated Fund Instrumentality (NAFI) hiring programs. Nonappropriated Fund positions are paid using money generated within the Department of the Army and other military branches through sales revenues. These overseas jobs are primarily governed by military regulations.

When positions are filled locally overseas, U.S. citizens living abroad, dependents of citizens employed or stationed overseas, or foreign nationals, can be hired. Most countries have agreements with United States installations that require the hiring of local nationals whenever possible to bolster the local economy. All positions held by foreign nationals are in the Excepted Service. Excepted Service positions are not subject to OPM’s competitive hiring requirements.

Most of the upper-and mid-level positions are filled through internal placement. Internal placement allows government employees wanting to work overseas to first apply for the positions in-house. If there are no in-house bidders, agencies then advertise through competitive announcements.

Overseas job applicants should contact individual Agency and OPM web sites for job listings. Contact the following Employment Service Center for NAFI and military civilian Jobs:

This segment of U.S. public education consists of 160 elementary, middle, and secondary schools. The schools are located in 8 districts located in 12 foreign countries, seven states, Guam, and Puerto Rico with enrollment of 60,000 students and 8,000 educators.

The school year consists of 190 duty days, with a minimum of 175 days of classroom instruction. Teachers are currently paid on several different pay bands (bachelor’s degree, bachelor’s degree plus 15 semester hours, master’s degree plus 30 semester hours, and doctor’s degree

Conditions of Employmen t

Federal overseas workers must meet various requirements: physical, security, qualifications, tour of duty, etc. Announcements list specific restrictions, conditions, and special qualifications.

Individuals wanting to work overseas jobs must meet certain stringent requirements. Thorough physical exams for both the applicant and, in many cases, accompanying dependents require physicals. You must be able to physically adapt to the conditions at various locations that may not have adequate health care facilities. Individuals on medication or who require special care will not be considered for certain positions. Any physical impairment that would create a hazard to others or to yourself, or would reduce performance level, will disqualify the applicant.

Security Clearance Checks

All applicants considered for appointment must pass a comprehensive security clearance, character and suitability check. These investigations take from a few weeks to several months to complete. If you are selected for a position, you will be appointed conditionally, pending the results of the investigation.

Individuals selected for overseas jobs are generally required to sign a transportation agreement. Typically, overseas tours last from twelve to thirty-six months.

A foreign language that would not be a position requirement in the States may be required for certain overseas job positions. The job announcement will specify if a language is required. Several agencies appoint candidates without the required language skill and give them a period of time to develop acceptable language proficiency

There are a limited number of overseas employment positions and competition is keen. However, if you are well qualified in an occupation and available for most locations, your opportunity to be selected is good. The normal rotation of current employees back to the United States creates a large number of recurring vacancies.

Federal overseas job applications are accepted only from U.S. citizens and American Samoans.

Overseas Jobs Pay & Benefits

Overseas employees in foreign areas receive the base pay on the GS pay charts with annual cost-of-living adjustments. Additional allowances such as a post differential are provided where conditions warrant. Military base privileges are authorized in many circumstances and Department of Defense schools are available for dependent children through grade 12. Because the employee’s base pay in foreign areas actually goes down due to no locality payments, overseas employment may not be a good place to work prior to retirement. Without locality pay, your retirement annuity will be less since it is based on the employee’s three-year average salary.

On September 30, 2010, OPM published an Interim Rule making Alaska and Hawaii separate whole State locality pay areas and including the other non-foreign areas in the Rest of U.S. locality pay area. The Non-Foreign Area Retirement Equity Assurance Act of 2009, phases-in locality pay for employees in the non-foreign areas.

Basic benefits are the same for all civil service employees. Overseas employees also receive travel to their overseas duty station, transportation and storage of household goods, and extra vacation with paid transportation to return stateside between tours of duty.

Most agencies permit professional employees to take dependents with them. Professional positions are generally considered to be mid-level positions and above. Other employees can often arrange for dependants to follow them at a later date.

Three teenage boys, in black shirts, attaching a yellow poster to a pole in front of a house.

Let Tesla Expand? Three German Teens Have a Few Thoughts.

The U.S. automaker’s plan to enlarge its operations outside Berlin has divided local residents. Some worry about the environmental costs; others see job prospects.

Reporting from Grünheide, Germany

  • Feb. 19, 2024

Tesla’s hulking assembly plant outside Berlin, which opened two years ago in a community known for its forests and lakes, still rubs many residents the wrong way. They worry it threatens the quality of their water and air, and has disrupted the peacefulness that drew them to the area.

Steffen Schorcht, 63, who lives across the freeway from the plant, said the light pollution alone meant he could no longer see the stars when he looked up at night.

Now Tesla wants to clear out an additional 250 acres of forest near the plant for warehouses and a rail yard, as well as for a day care center for employees and the community. Mr. Schorcht and many of his neighbors are determined to make sure that doesn’t happen.

“We say, ‘enough is enough,’” Mr. Schorcht said. Their resistance campaign includes weekly hikes through the endangered forest and knocking on doors.

But three local teenagers see the situation differently. For them, the arrival of a headline-making company with an intense focus on innovation through disruption has injected a dynamism into Grünheide, their sleepy town of 9,000 people, and given them a perspective for their futures.

A building with the letters TESLA in the distance, with trees and woods in the foreground.

Asked whether they would be interested in a traineeship or a job at Tesla, the three — Silas Heineken, 17; Moritz Tezky, 16; and Tariq Löber, 18 — all answered at once: “Definitely!”

The three high-school classmates created a website with a built-in chatbot that tries to rebut concerns about the plan. They have also put up posters around town, adorned with two robotic-looking hands flashing a V-sign under the words “For It” written in all caps.

“We realized how easy it is for people to be against something, to reject something new,” said Silas, seated beside his friends in a garage that serves as their rec room, band practice space and campaign headquarters. “It was this general opposition that was really bothering us.”

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

The debate in Grünheide will come to a climax on Tuesday when officials announce the results of a townwide referendum on the expansion. The vote is nonbinding, but the mayor said city officials had said it would play an important role in their decision.

The controversy points to a larger issue playing out across Germany, which faces an aging, shrinking population, especially in parts of the former East Germany. In the state of Brandenburg, where Grünheide is, officials predict that nearly a third of the residents will be retirement age, 65 or older, by 2030.

To thrive, analysts say such regions need to attract more young people, or persuade those who grew up there to return after college.

“They want to know: How can I develop myself here? Can I pursue my education? Are there jobs?” said Eva Eichenauer, a researcher at the Berlin Institute for Population and Development.

German companies are desperate to hire young people. More than a third of all businesses offering apprenticeships — on-the-job training alongside classroom work — did not receive a single application in 2023, according to the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Such positions serve as the key route to work in the country’s automotive and other industrial sector.

Tesla offers apprenticeships, and a building for classes is a part of the expansion. In a campaign involving a rare level of community outreach for the company — weekly informational sessions in its showroom at the factory and several info fairs in the town — Tesla is promising that allowing it to expand would create “more well-paid jobs for you and your children.” Tesla said the warehouses and rail yard would ease supply chain issues and reduce truck traffic in the area.

When town officials decided to put Tesla’s plan to a vote, residents as young as 16 were allowed to cast a ballot. The opportunity was not lost on the three teenagers.

“The Gigafactory expansion was a reason for us to say, ‘Why don’t we — for the first time, maybe in history — show that we’re for something,’” Silas said.

The three friends insisted they did not consider themselves fans of Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, but all three said they admired Tesla’s mission “to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.”

They grew close during Covid lockdowns, often gathering for their online classes at Silas’s house. His father, Peer Heineken, provided technical support when the boys decided to begin their campaign.

Using ChatGPT, they built a website that invited people to “type what you are against” — with the goal of providing counterarguments to those opposing Tesla’s plans. But they learned how unreliable the technology can be, and ended up writing letters of apology to people who received offensive responses.

Tesla’s arrival not only gave them job prospects if they stayed in the region, but also improved their overall quality of life, they said. They pointed to additional bus routes and more frequent trains to Berlin, a more vibrant retail and restaurant scene, and a sense their town had become more interesting.

“I don’t feel like I’m living in a dead suburb anymore,” Moritz said.

The company’s decision to build in Grünheide was based on various factors, including its proximity to Berlin and the site’s designation for industry. But the location, on the edge of a coal-mining region that had been losing jobs, also meant that local authorities were eager to welcome it.

“Tesla is an incredibly attractive employer, which, of course, opens up prospects for young people in training beyond coal, in fields that are interesting and relevant,” Ms. Eichenauer said.

In the first half of 2023, while the German economy contracted by 0.3 percent from a year earlier, Brandenburg recorded growth of 6 percent — the strongest of any of Germany’s 16 states.

“That has something to do with Tesla,” said Dietmar Woidke, the governor of Brandenburg. He said the automaker had not only attracted a network of suppliers and subcontractors, but had also helped the local economy in ways large and small.

The company, which employs 11,000 people at the plant and still has hundreds of unfilled positions, is also more flexible about whom it hires, an aspect that Mr. Woidke considers an asset to his region.

“Tesla hires and trains people, regardless of what qualification they have earned, whether they are now engineers, skilled workers or whether they have trained to be bakers, or whether they have no professional training at all,” Mr. Woidke said.

But Mr. Schorcht and others critical of Tesla argue that the factory is largely focused on rote assembly, not skills development, offering jobs that require more basic training and lack the guarantees of the union contracts widely offered across the German automotive sector.

“The children graduating from Grünheide normally have high school diplomas that will take them to university,” Mr. Schorcht said. “They won’t stay here and work low-skilled jobs at Tesla.”

Right now, the three teenagers are more focused on finishing high school than getting jobs or going to college. But when they think about their futures, they say that Tesla’s presence in the place where they grew up makes it possible to imagine returning one day after earning a college degree.

“All of us are looking for higher education, which is hard to get outside of a big city,” Tariq said. “But if I was going to stay here, Tesla would be a big reason.”

Saints could play an International Series Game in Germany in 2024

T here's a chance the New Orleans Saints could fly overseas again in 2024: the NFL announced Monday that five games will be played in its International Series next season, with the Carolina Panthers hosting one of them. The Saints are not scheduled to travel for games against the other four hosts, but they'll go to Carolina as part of the annual two-game NFC South rivalry series.

Or, maybe, they'll go to Germany. The Panthers will play a home game at Munich's Allianz Arena in 2024. New Orleans will not lose another home game to the International Series slate until 2030 but that doesn't mean they're prevented from making the trip as visitors. And this being an NFC South feature won't stop the NFL from assigning them to go.

Divisional matchups are uncommon overseas -- these are often big draws pitting geographic rivals against each in games they can easily travel for -- but they aren't as rare as you'd think. Of the 43 NFL games played abroad, six have pitted divisional opponents up against each other.

In 2022 the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals kicked off from Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. There were three games featuring divisional rivals in the 2019 season, including the Carolina Panthers' matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in London (the Panthers were nominal visitors). Here's the full list:

  • 2015: New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins (AFC East)
  • 2017: Arizona Cardinals vs. Los Angeles Rams (NFC West)
  • 2019: Carolina Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFC South)
  • 2019: Houston Texans vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (AFC South)
  • 2019: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Los Angeles Chargers (AFC West)
  • 2022: San Francisco 49ers vs. Arizona Cardinals (NFC West)

The Saints have played just three games in the International Series since it kicked off back in 2007; they won twice at Wembley Stadium in London, beating the then-San Diego Chargers in 2008 and shutting out the Miami Dolphins in 2017, but they lost a close one to the Minnesota Vikings in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2022.

We'll have to wait and see whether the Saints are making the trip. We learned in early May 2022 that the Saints would kick off with the Vikings in London, and it'll take a few months for the NFL to unveil its complete International Series schedule for 2024. And watch out for sketchy reports; German tabloids last year ran with the story that the Saints would be visiting for a game with the Chicago Bears, but it didn't pan out. So maybe wait to plan your trip.
