How to use Adobe Photoshop.
You don’t need to be a graphic design pro to use the leading image editing software. Explore this beginners’ guide for everything you need to start using Photoshop.
Get started with Photoshop basics.
Some fundamental knowledge of Photoshop can help you take the first steps to creating impressive digital artwork using photos, textures, shapes, and line drawings. Dive in and start a simple project, such as a postcard, to see what you can do.
Begin your first project.
After you download and open the app, create a new file in the Photoshop Document (PSD) format. As the native file format for Photoshop, a PSD file can store a large amount of data, including high-quality images.
Start from scratch or a template.
You can get a head start on flyers, postcards, and posters with a Photoshop template , or you can work from a document that’s entirely your own.
Choose a document size.
To create a new document, click the blue New File button. Then select the canvas size and resolution that fits your project. For example, a postcard is usually 4 x 6 inches.
Choose your resolution.
Choose 300 pixels per inch (ppi) to make sure you don’t lose any detail if you print it.
Discover how to work with layers.
Layers are like clear sheets you can lay over background layers or images. Working in layers allows you to add and adjust different elements like portions of photos or text. If your layer is transparent or semi-transparent, you can see through it to the layers below it.
You can add images, textures, colors, and text to one layer without affecting the content in the layers below it, so you can undo or adjust any moves you make that you’re not happy with. Create a new layer from scratch or create one from an existing image.
Create a new layer from scratch.
Click the Create a New Layer button in the Layers panel or choose Layer › New › Layer from the top menu. (Give the new layer a name that will make it easy to identify later.)
Create a layer from an existing file.
Add a piece of artwork or an image to your project as a new layer.
1. Import the file.
Let’s say you’re creating a postcard from a perfect beach photo you captured. To add the photo, drag and drop a JPEG or PNG photo file from your desktop into your Photoshop project. It will become a new layer over the background layer.
2. Reposition and resize it.
Click and drag the corners or edges of your photo to make it larger or smaller. (Make sure the Show Transform Controls box is checked in the options bar at the top of Photoshop.) Use the Move tool to reposition your photo to fit your layout.
3. Press Enter or Return.
Photoshop will automatically turn the layer into a Smart Object layer. This is simply an object you can change as you like without reducing the resolution.
Adjust certain areas of your image with layer masks.
A layer mask allows you to control what to hide and what to show on a layer. For example, you can combine two images seamlessly by creating a layer mask of your subject and then placing that subject over a background from another photo.
How to add a mask to a layer.
Let’s say you want to add someone who wasn’t there to your beach postcard photo. You can do this in the Select and Mask workspace.
1. Set up the photo.
Drag and drop a photo of the person (or pet) you want to add. Line up your subject in a layer above your photo backdrop.
2. Make your selection.
Click the layer with your subject — the layer you want to mask — in the Layers panel. In the top menu, click Select › Select and Mask.
3. Select your subject.
Click Select Subject in the options bar. Photoshop will automatically select the most prominent subjects in the image. Note that the layer mask thumbnail will appear next to the image thumbnail in the Layers panel. The selection will appear white against a black background. The white part is the part that will be revealed while the rest will be hidden.
4. Refine your selection.
Use the Add or Subtract buttons to add or take away pixels from your selection. You can also click Refine Hair and Photoshop will automatically find and refine difficult hair selections. Or try the Refine Edge Brush tool, the Lasso tool, or the Quick Selection tool in the upper left of the toolbar to refine with even more control.
Remove an object or spot from an image.
One easy way to use Photoshop is to remove things like garbage bins, power lines, and photobombers from your pictures. It’s also easy to remove a blemish from a portrait or a piece of litter from your perfect postcard beach shot.
How to clean up your image.
Follow these steps to take out what you don’t want.
1. Select the layer.
In the Layers panel, choose the layer with the spots or objects you want to remove.
2. Select the Spot Healing Brush tool.
Click the Spot Healing Brush tool in the Tools panel or just press the J key. In the options bar, you can adjust the size and hardness of the brush edge (harder creates more clearly defined edges). Keep the type setting at Content-Aware, which means the tool will sample pixels and match the texture, lighting, transparency, and shading of the sampled pixels to the pixels being healed.
3. Click or drag.
Click on a spot or drag the brush over the object you want to remove.
Write on your layers.
If you’re making a postcard from your beach paradise, you may want to add the name of the place or a message.
Add text in a variety of styles.
Insert and resize text. Choose a font from the thousands of free fonts that come with an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription.
Move, warp, and shape your words.
After adding text to an image , adjust its color, placement, and look — perhaps add a bit of bending or warping to the letters with the Warp tool.
How to add text.
Write what you want and then experiment with different fonts and styles.
1. Select the Type tool.
Click the tool in the toolbar or just press the T key.
2. Pick your spot.
Click on the image where you want to place the type. In the options bar at the top of Photoshop, you can choose whether you want the type to be horizontal or vertical, as well as the font, size, color, alignment, and any warp effects you want to add.
Add your own text over the “Lorem ipsum” sample text, and edit.
Highlight the text to make style changes. Use the Move tool to move the text exactly where you want it.
CREATE GORGEOUS IMAGES, RICH GRAPHICS, AND INCREDIBLE ART.

Draw on your layers.
Paint a picture on your picture. Maybe you want to add a cartoon umbrella, or your beach photo looks a little too wonderful and you want to limit your viewers’ FOMO by drawing a shark in the water. Whatever your vision, Photoshop gives you the tools to realize it.
Add shapes to your design.
Use the Rectangle and Ellipse tools to draw those shapes, or use Pen tools to create more complicated shapes with anchor points and handles.
Choose from a thousand brushes.
Paint or draw whatever you want on your image. Select a preset brush , brush tip, and shape, or create a unique brush tip from part of an image.
How to paint in Photoshop.
Whether you want to add shapes or draw freehand with the Brush tool, the steps are basically the same.
1. Select the tool from the toolbar.
Click the tool in the toolbar (or press the B key for the Brush or the M key for the Rectangular Marquee tool).
2. Customize the tool in the options bar.
Choose your brush size and how fast you want the paint to flow, or the color that will fill your rectangle or ellipse.
3. Make your mark.
Paint, draw, or play with shapes. Try out different settings to see how they look.
Save your file.
To save a file, go to the File menu and select any of the Save commands: Save, Save As, or Save a Copy. You can save to cloud documents or save on your computer. You can also export your PSD to another file type, like JPEG, PNG, or PDF. In the top menu, click File › Export › Export As to export your document.
Make big changes in an instant with Neural Filters.
Neural Filters are smart filters that use the power of Adobe Sensei AI technology to make quick, automatic edits to images. Now you can make the kinds of edits that used to take hours for professional graphic designers in seconds.
To select a filter, click Choose Filter › Neural Filters from the top menu in Photoshop. Download the filter of your choice if it’s not already installed, then adjust its settings as you like. The following are just a few of the filters available.
Colorize black-and-white photos.
Turn black-and-white images into full color in a few clicks with the Colorize filter. Choose the colors you want and fine-tune the saturation with focus points.
Zoom in while staying sharp.
With Super Zoom, you can get close and personal without losing detail. Enhance facial features and fix fuzziness so your close-up stays clear.
Smooth skin.
Remove blemishes, tattoos, scars, and more with the Skin Smoothing filter. As you’re retouching, use the Smoothness and Blur sliders to get just the right look.
Clean up your photos.
If you’ve converted a JPEG to PSD, you may notice fuzzy or pixelated areas. You can remove these artifacts of compression with the JPEG Artifacts Removal filter. Fine-tune with either a high, medium, or low level of blur.
Do more with Adobe Photoshop.
Try these step-by-step Photoshop tutorials.
Familiarize yourself with more tools and learn how to take your photo editing to the next level.

Achieve a painted or airbrushed look by limiting the number of colors that appear across a photo or just a specific selection.

The Start workspace introduced in Photoshop CC during the November 2015 update.
This screen is displayed when you first launch Photoshop or whenever no documents are open. Photoshop CC 2017 makes small but significant changes to this Start Workspace.
Photoshop CC 2017 gives you quick access to your recent files as with previous versions of the Start workspace. But CC 2017 removes two of the main tabs, the Libraries and Presets tabs, and replaces them with the CC Files tab.
This new CC Files tab gives you access to the last 50 PSD files synced to your Creative Cloud account. These files also include PSD assets that you have uploaded from the Creative Cloud Market .
PSD files are currently the only file type supported in the CC Files tab. Still, additional formats and filtering controls are expected to be released in future versions of Photoshop CC .
To customize the number of recent files that are displayed in the Recent Files list, go into the Preferences dialog by pressing Ctrl K (Mac: Command K). In the File Handling tab, under Recent File List Contains, enter the number of recent files you wish to display (between 0 and 100).
To quickly exit the Start Workspace, you can press the Esc key. To permanently disable the Start Workspace, go into the Preferences dialog by pressing Ctrl K (Mac: Command K). Under General, uncheck “ Show ‘Start’ Workspace When No Documents Are Open .”

New Document Window
One of the most significant changes in Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 is the completely redesigned New Document dialog box. This redesign still has all the functionality of the legacy dialog box but in a more modern and visual layout.
But this update is much more than a cosmetic change. The New Document dialog now comes with free templates from Adobe Stock that allow you to jump-start your creative process immediately.
You can launch the New Document window by using the keyboard shortcut Ctrl N (Mac: Command N) or by going to File > New .
This redesigned New Document window allows you to:
- Create documents using templates from Adobe Stock, Allowing you to quickly jump-start the creative process.
- Save custom presets.
- Create documents using Blank Document Presets from multiple categories.
If you’re a person who does not like changes, then you can go back to the old New Document dialog box. Simply enter the Preferences dialog by pressing Ctrl K (Mac: Command K). Under the General tab, check the “ Use Legacy’ File New’ Interface ” checkbox.
I don’t recommend doing this since this new dialog box contains a lot of useful presents and templates. but this option is available in case you need it.
The New Document dialog contains two kinds of presets that will help you get started with your creative process. Blank Document presets and Photoshop templates.
Blank document templates are similar to what we had in previous versions of Photoshop. They create a blank document based on a pre-defined document size, resolution, and color profile.
In Photoshop CC 2017, these blank document templates work the same but are more modern and visual.
As with the older versions of Photoshop CC, you can create your blank document preset or use one of the many presets found in eight categories:
- Art & Illustration
- Film & Video
One of the most significant and notable additions to Photoshop CC 2017 is the starter Photoshop Templates provided within the New Document dialog.
These Photoshop Templates are files that you can use to be inspired by or jump-start your creative projects.
The hundreds of free Photoshop Templates provided by Adobe Stock . They include files that contain brochures, flyers, motion graphics, video overlays, and much more.
You can search for a template by selecting a category, Photo, Print, Art & Illustration, Web, Mobile, and Film & Video.
When you choose a category, you can see the list of templates available. Clicking on a template will reveal the template details to the right of the dialog box.
The first time you use any of these free templates, you will need to download them and license them from Adobe Stock before starting.
Once you have them inside your Creative Cloud library, you will see a blue circle with a checkmark.
Downloaded Templates are added to a Creative Cloud Library called Stock Templates .
You can access this library through the Libraries panel from within Photoshop.
You can also see your Creative Cloud files through a web browser by going to the assets page of your creative cloud account.
h tps://assets.adobe.com/assets/libraries
By default, the template files use the file extensions .psdt. B t they open as a regular .psd file when they are brought into Photoshop. The changes you make to the .psd while working in Photoshop will not affect the original .psdt template in the Libraries panel.

One of the best and most noteworthy additions to Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 is the powerful multi-scope Search . It is an excellent tool for both beginner and experienced users alike. You can think about it as Google inside of Photoshop.
You can use the Photoshop Search feature to quickly find tools, menus, tutorials, tips, assets, documents, layers, and more, all from a unified dialog box.
Search integrates with Adobe Stock to help you find assets and Photoshop Templates.
Search also integrates with helpx.adobe.com to retrieve relevant help documentation and instructional material.
To bring up the Photoshop Search box, press Ctrl F (Mac: Command F).
Note : In previous versions of Photoshop, Ctrl F (Mac: Command F) was the keyboard shortcut for reapplying the last-used filter. T reapply the last used filter in Photoshop CC 2017. Press Ctrl Alt F (Mac: Command Option F).
To start a search, simply start typing in the search box. Photoshop will immediately begin to generate content based on the characters you enter.
The search query will yield three categories: Photoshop , Learn , and Stock . By default, you’ll see results from all the categories, but you can filter by category by clicking on the tab labels below the Search box.
Results under the Photoshop category are items that you could find through the Photoshop interface; such as tools, layers, and panels.
Results in the Learn category are documentation or instructional material from helpx.adobe.com .
Results in the Stock category are assets from the Adobe Stock library.
This is a detailed list of the type of content that you can expect from each category:
- Layers (Active Document)
- New Document Presets
- Open Documents
- Recent Files
- Smart Objects
- Documentation
- Instructional Material
- Illustrations
One of the best things about the Photoshop Search feature is that you can perform tasks and operations associated with the search results simply by clicking on them.
This is a time-saver, and it can also help you discover functionality that you may not have known existed.
Clicking on the following types of search results will perform the operation described:
- Layer : Select the layer and makes it visible in the Layers panel.
- Tool : Activates the tool and highlights it.
- Panel : Makes the panel visible and active.
- Filter Applies the filter or opens the dialog for that filter.
- Menu Command : Runs the command. (Unless the command is unavailable.)
- Recent File : Opens the file.
- Open Documents : Activates the document.
- Help or Learn Topics : Opens the article in your default browser.
- Stock Asset : Downloads the image asset into your active Creative Cloud library and places a Cloud-Linked asset on the canvas.
Photoshop Search has an advanced algorithm that allows the use of synonyms. For example, searching for “ Retouch ” will return search results relevant to retouching. This includes tools such as the Clone Stamp Tool, Healing Brush Tool, and Patch Tool.
The Search feature supports all languages that Photoshop CC 2017 supports, though the search results may vary by language because of the differences in each language.
Some of the items that the Photoshop Search does not include are library elements or individual styles.

SVG Color Fonts
The biggest enhancement to Type in Photoshop CC 2017 is the addition of SVG Color Fonts to the list of supported font types. SV fonts support multiple colors and gradients in a single glyph.
Photoshop CC 2017 also ships with the Trajan Color Concept and EmojiOne font. So you can now use Emojis in Photoshop! 🙂 🙂 🙂
When working with SVG fonts, it’s important to note that you will need to open your Glyph Panel (Window > Glyphs) to have access to the full range of characters available.
This is because many of these fonts do not have corresponding keys to the characters found in the font.
In some cases, keyboard entries may work but will only display characters using one color scheme. Even though many others are included in the font.
For example, the Trajan Color Concept font includes 20 different stylistic sets, which are available only through the Glyphs panel.
The following icons are used to indicate the type of font:
Composite Glyphs
Another example of combining glyphs can be seen when you combine one of the single-person, yellow-faced characters with any of the five-round skin-colored characters.
In this example, the original person character will remain, but it will be recolored to match the skin color selected. Not that this does NOT work with composites made by more than one person.
You can select a combination of glyphs to create a composite. For example, you can create country flags or change the skin color of emojis.
Another feature of SVG fonts, specifically, EmojiOne is that you can composite new glyphs using a combination of glyphs.
The “letters” in EmojiOne do NOT correspond to these same keys on the keyboard.
If you use the Glyph Panel to add two letters that make up a given country’s ISO code , then the two letters will combine and result in the flag of that country.
For example, selecting “U” and “S” in the Glyphs panel would result in the American flag. MX would give you the Mexican flag, and DE would give you the German flag.
These “composites” can be broken back into their constituent pieces. For instance, if you insert the character for a given national flag, then pressing the Backspace key will break this composite into individual, single-letter glyphs. The American flag will turn to the letter U for example.
You can match the skin-colored characters to five available skin tones. To o so select the tone that you like from the Glyphs panel.
Note: Character Variants do not work with glyphs that contain more than one person.

Im not getting the new Start WorkSpace, all those options are enabled, and i find “Use Legacy “New Document” Interface” is disabled in my PS. Scrnshot: http://imgur.com/a/dZ4be
I’m not sure why that is. My only guess is that you do not have the minimum requirements for CC 2017.
Check here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/system-requirements.html
The ‘New Document’ dialog is a nice idea, but I have disabled it. It is so very very slow to load.

Alex, I’m not sure what is causing this issue. Try asking in the Photoshop forums, maybe someone there has seen it before. https://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop
I don’t find “Refine Edge” option into my Photoshop CC? Why? Need help.
That’s the old tool. The new version is Select and Mask Workspace.
Nik doesn’t work properly with CC2017. Have revered to 2015 last update.
Nik is will no longer be updated by Google. Photoshop 2015 is the last version that will be fully supported.
How can I revert back to PS 2015? I am so bummed that NIK no longer is supported! Plus, I am having to re-learn Photoshop in lots of areas that I was just getting the hang of !
Glad I found you. Is there any way to open or move a photo into a layer and have it automatically sized for the new canvas? My search has come up with nothing. I have clicked the resize image during place, but then it won’t do it. Unless I’m doing it wrong and need to “place” it, instead of drag it. But then I can’t find “place”.
Thoughts? Thanks.
I used to practice on the previous version of Photoshop and when I used it the layers display panel would automatically show up. On the latest version I can’t figure out how to display the layers panel – it only has Channels and Paths displayed. Please let me know:)
I have PS CC 2017 and can’t get the Clone Stamp Tool to work. Any suggestions?
Can you explain the situation further? Are there any notices you get? or What is the issue?
Oh! Very Awesome n informative. Big thanks.
You’re welcome!
How can I revert back to Photoshop 15? I love my NIK software, now can’t use it!!
I’m not sure if you can. But it’s not Adobe’s fault. Google stopped updating the Plugins.
Can I revert back to Photoshop 15? I love my NIK software but now cannot use it!
To tell you the truth, CC17 sucks. It requires so much more work to get simple jobs done. Having trouble just getting aps to work!!!!
Give me one example. I can’t think of a single thing is CC that is vastly different than any other version that requires more work.
It’s a step forward, but really a pity that the search tool doesn’t work for actions or styles (I have so many of them). Or maybe I’m using it wrong? Anyway, there’s always place for improvement, I think they’ve just introduced it now so they can feature the stock images in a more visible place.
