3. Consistency Bonus

Consistency Bonus is that a 15% back out on 500 BV or more from the items, which can be used to buy other cash for less.

If Distributor AKASH purchases 500 BV and purchases multiple products of 500 BV products regularly for 4 consecutive months between the 1st and 15th of each month in his own ID, AKASH is eligible to receive a Consistency Bonus which will be credited in the 4th month as below.

4. Working Bonus Point

You have to do recruitment to get this income. To get Working Bonus Point (WBP) income , you have to do 500 BV in two legs and for every 500 BV match by recruiting.

Here is the below table of Working Bonus Point Income.

For example: If a distributor has a race of 500 BV, he had 500 BV in one leg and 600 BV in the other leg. According to the table, they will get 100 rupees.

The remaining 100 BV will be carried forward for next month. Carry Forward BV is used only for working bonus accounts, other income accounts are not used for carrying Forward BV.

Capping= Rs. 120000 per month

5. Active Team Bonus

Under the Active Team Bonus , It has been applied for every downline up to 5 levels. Some percentage of working bonus is available as this income.

6. Leadership Bonus

Under the Leadership Bonus, Company gives a 10% amount of the company’s total Turnover to all qualifiers Direct Seller.

To get Leadership Bonus, Direct Seller needs 2500 BV in your two legs and for every 2500 BV, you get a leadership bonus point that is being offered by the company. The Value of this BV points from Rs 2,000 to Rs 2,500.

7. Car Fund

In the Car Fund of Negocia Global Company, Direct Sellers need 25000 Matching BV, which means they have to collect 25000 BV on both legs, it’s called 1 CF point .

8. House Fund

In the House Fund of Negocia Global Company, Direct Seller needs 50000 Matching BV, which means Direct Seller needs to collect 500000 BV on both legs, it’s called 1 HF point.

9. Nominee Fund 

If an accident or an acute and chronic illness or sudden illness or unexpected accident occurs of an Active Direct Seller of Negocia Global (age is between 18-60), their Family gets Nomine which is 1% CTO monthly BV.

A check for 1% CTO BV for that particular month will be handed over to the nominee of the such direct seller by the management of the company or the name of their nominee for further monthly payout by the top leader of their Team.

10. Negocia Royal Fund

Under Negocia Royal Fund , the company distributes 5% of its total monthly turnover among all Qualifiers. In this income, if a Direct seller gets 100000 BV points on each side, they get 1 NRF Point.

11. Store Referral Bonus

If a Direct Seller opens Negoica’s Mini Store or Super Store, they get a referral commission.

Basically, there are 2 store facilities available for the Company. If a Direct Seller refers to a store, she or he will be given a store referral bonus of the monthly turnover BV of that particular store.

उपरोक्त दिये गये इनकम को समझने से पहले हमें BV के बारे में जानकारी होनी चाहिए। ठट कंपनी की मुद्रा यूनिट है। इसका फुल फ़ॉर्म Business Volume  होता है।

BV के बारे में आप इस प्रकार से समझ सकते हैं। 1 BV की Value  लगभग 2 से 3 रूपये होती है और हर प्राडक्ट पर एक निर्धारित BV होता है। जिसकी सहायता से BV की गणना करने में आसानी होती है। इसका उपयोग इनकम की गणना में किया जाता है।

तो आइये। इसके बाद हम सभी इनकम के बारे में विस्तार से जानकारी प्राप्त करते हैं-

  • Retail Profit इस इनकम के अनुसार आप कंपनी के प्रोडक्ट को एम.आर.पी पर बेचकर Retail Profit अर्थात खुदरा मुनाफा प्राप्त कर अपनी आमदनी बढ़ा सकते हैं।

Negocia Global कंपनी द्वारा डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर को प्रोडक्ट Distributor Price (DP)  प्रदान किया जाता है। जोकि एम.आर.पी से लगभग 20 से प्रतिशत तक की छूट के होते हैं और जिन्हें MRP पर बेचकर Retail Profit इनकम प्राप्त होती है।

  • Self Purchase Bonus (SPB): जैसाकि नाम से ही पूरी तरह से स्पष्ट है कि इस प्रकार की इनकम के लिए कपंनी से प्रोडक्ट खरीदना होता है। मान लीजिए कोई डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर एक महीने में 500 BV का प्रोडक्ट खरीदता है तो उसे 1 SPB Point मिलता है, जिसकी कीमत लगभग 25 से 30 रुपये तक होती है।

कहने का आशय यह है कि हर 500 BV  पर   कंपनी  1 SPB Point प्रदान करती है। जिसे बाद में रूपये में कन्वर्ट किया जाता है।

  • Consistency Bonus

Consistency Bonus के अन्तर्गत 500 BV का या इससे अधिक का सामान खरीदने पर 15 प्रतिशत कैशबैक प्राप्त होता है, जिसका प्रयोग अन्य प्रॉडक्ट को खरीदने में किया जा सकता है।

जैसेः  मान लेते हैं राकेश एक डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर के तौर पर कंपनी से जुड़ा हुआ है और वह लगातार 4 महीने तक 500 BV हर महीने के अनुसार सामान खरीदता है, तो इस तरह से चारों महीनों का मिलाकर उसके पास 2000 BV का सामान हो जाता है। इस इनकम के अनुसार कुल BV का 15 प्रतिशत अर्थात 2000 BV का 15 प्रतिशत राकेश को इस Consistency Bonus के रूप में प्राप्त होंगे, जोकि 300 रुपये होते हैं।

Working Bonus को प्राप्त करने के लिए आपकों रिक्रूटमेंट करानी होती है। इसके लिए आपके दो लेग में 500 BV  का प्रॉडक्ट खरीदवाना होता है और हर 500 BVमैच होने के बाद कंपनी के द्वारा Working Bonus Point  प्रदान किया जाता है। इसके बारे में हम नीचे प्रस्तुत की गई सारिणी से और अधिक जानकारी प्राप्त कर सकते हैं।

जैसेः मान लीजिए राकेश एक डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर है और उसके द्वारा 50 BV की मैचिंग की जाती जिसमें उसके एक लेग में 50 BV तथा दूसरे लेग में BV ठट होता है।

उपरोक्त दी गयी सारिणी के अनुसार 1000 बीवी मैचिंग पर 20 प्रतिशत कमीशन कंपनी द्वारा प्रदान किया जाएगा। जोकि 100 रूपये होते हैं। शेष BV अगले आने वाले महीने के लिए कैरी फॉरवर्ड कर दिया जाता है। कैरी फॉरवर्ड BV केवल Working Bonus  के कैल्कुलेशन के लिए उपयोग में लाया जाता है, किसी अन्य तरीके की इनकम के कैल्कुलेशन में कैरी फॉररवर्ड BV को नहीं गिना जाता है।

Active Team Bonus के अंतर्गत डाउनलाइन के 5th लेबल तक प्रति डाउनलाइन के द्वारा प्राप्त किया गया Working Bonus का कुछ प्रतिशत इस इनकम के रूप में प्राप्त होता है। यहां पर नीचे दी जा रही टेबल की सहायता से आप यह जानकारी प्राप्त कर सकते हैं कि किस लेवल के डाउनलाइन के Working Bonus का कितने प्रतिशत इनकम आपको प्राप्त होता है।

डाउनलाइन लेवल Active Team Bonus

2 – 2%

3 – 2%

4 – 1%

5 – 1%

Leadership Bonus  इनकम के अंतर्गत कंपनी के कुल मासिक टर्नओवर में से 10 प्रतिशत सभी क्वालीफायर्स के बीच में डिस्ट्रीब्यूट कर दिया जाता है।

इस प्रकार की इनकम को प्राप्त करने के लिए आपको अपने किसी दो लेग में कम से कम 2500  BV का होना अनिवार्य होता है। और प्रत्येक 2500  BV मैचिंग होने पर कंपनी की ओर से एक Leadership Bonus Point प्रदान किया जाता है। इसकी Leadership Bonus Point की वैल्यू 2,000 से लेकर 25,00 रूपये तक होती है।

Car Fund इनकम के अंतर्गत प्रत्येक 25,000 BV मैचिंग होने पर 1 Car Fund Point कंपनी द्वारादिया जाता है। इसकी वैल्यू लगभग 3,500 रुपये से लेकर 4,000 रुपये तक होती है।

इस प्रकार की इनकम को प्राप्त करने के लिए 50,000 BV मैचिंग होने पर 1 House Fund Point कंपनी द्वारा दिया जाता है। इसकी कीमत लगभग 3,500 से 4,000 रुपये तक होती है।

  •   Negocia Royal Fund (NRF)

Negocia Royal Fund (NRF)  इनकम के अंतर्गत कंपनी अपने टोटल मंथली टर्नओवर में से 10 प्रतिशत इनकम सभी क्वालीफाॅयर्स के बीच में डिवाइड करती है। इस तरह से से इस प्रकार के इनकम में प्रत्येक 1,00,000 BV मैच कराने पर 1 NRF POINT  कंपनी प्रदान करती है। इस इनकम की कीमत लगभग 6,500 रूपये तक होती है।

  •  Nominee Fund

Nominee Fund के अंतर्गत यदि Company के किसी distributor की मौत 18 से 60 साल के बीच में हो जाती है तो उस Distributor के परिवार को कंपनी की ओर से कंपनी की कुल मंथली BV ओवर का 1 प्रतिशत दिया जाता है।

  •  Store Bonus

यदि कोई Negoica Company का मिनी अथवा Super Store खोलता है या खुलवाता है, तो उसे Company की तरफ से Referal commistion की सुविधा प्रदान की जाती है।

An international business plan acts as a framework that identifies goals and objectives, specific target markets and clients, resources required and strategies to be developed in pursuit of international business opportunities. The plan allows for the monitoring of progress via metrics against which success and failure can be measured. A comprehensive international business plan will be comprised of a number of integrated strategies related to business functions, including communications, sales and marketing, finance and production.

What Is an International Business Plan?

An international business plan is a valuable management tool that describes who a business is, what it plans to achieve and how it plans to overcome risks and provide anticipated returns. It can be used for a wide variety of purposes, such as to:

  • Set goals and objectives for the organization’s performance.
  • Provide a basis for evaluating and controlling the organization’s performance.
  • Communicate an organization’s message to managers and staff, outside directors, suppliers, lenders and potential investors.
  • Help the planner identify the cash needs of the business.
  • Provide benchmarks against which to compare the progress and performance of the business over time.

A comprehensive and detailed plan forces the planner to look at an organization’s operations and re-evaluate the assumptions on which the business was founded. In doing so, strengths and weaknesses can be identified.

Although highly dependent on the individual business case, on average it takes a three-year commitment to establish a successful presence in a foreign market. This process may require tremendous human, technical and financial resources during the developmental period.

The Planning Process

An international business plan is subject to repeated adjustment and revision to keep it current with the changing circumstances of the organization. The plan is a feedback mechanism through which new information is continually incorporated into the organization’s operations. Planning always precedes action. Therefore, planning must be thought of as a continuous cycle. The analytical tools presented here are not intended to be used just once. If they are to be useful, they should be used repeatedly as part of a process of improvement and incremental adjustment.

Plan Preparation Guidelines

These 7 guidelines will help in preparing a comprehensive international business plan:

  • Clearly define the objectives for producing the plan : Who is going to read the plan, and what will they need to do? These objectives can help you decide how much emphasis to put on various sections.
  • Allocate sufficient time and resources to thoroughly research the plan : A plan is only as good as the research that went into producing it.
  • Show drafts of the plan to others : It can be very useful to obtain feedback from others, both inside and outside the business.
  • Create an original plan that is done specifically for each business case : A common mistake entrepreneurs make is to borrow heavily from a sample plan and simply change the names and some of the numbers. There are two big problems with this approach. First , the emphasis placed on various sections of the plan must reflect what is important to the particular business in question. Second , a good plan should flow like a story, with the sections working together to demonstrate why the business will succeed. Plans that borrow too heavily from other plans tend to be disjointed, with some sections contradicting others and various key issues left unaddressed.
  • Outline the key points in each section before the writing starts : These points must then be reviewed to ensure the sections are consistent with each other, there is little duplication and all key issues have been addressed.
  • Ensure financial projections are believable : For many readers, the financial section is the most important part of the plan because it identifies the financing needs and shows the profit potential of the business. In addition, a good financial plan will give the reader confidence that the author really understands the business.
  • Consider writing the executive summary as the last step in the process: It is usually easier to provide a concise overview after the detailed content has been created.
If you’re having trouble getting started with your business plan, try writing like it’s a series of tweets—one for every section of your business plan. To get your point across, 140 characters is all you need.

Forcing yourself to boil each section of your business plan down to one main point is an exercise in decision making and strategy all in itself. When you’re done, you’ll have everything you need to take your next step, whether that’s practicing your pitch to potential investors or a business partner, or sitting down to expand each tweet into a full section of a more traditional business plan.

Core Content

The international business plan is the culmination of all of the work done to determine the appropriate venture for the organization’s growth. As part of the feasibility process, the organization will have determined its own internal readiness, conducted comprehensive target market research and carefully analyzed any relevant risks.

At this point, the organization can take all of this information and analysis and formally document the plan for moving forward. There are many different models and examples of how to put together a formal business plan, rather than one correct way.

The right format will depend on the organization, the venture being pursued and who will be accessing the business plan and for what purpose. However, there are some basic guidelines to follow.

One of the reasons business plans are developed is to convince investors and/or bankers to invest in the venture.

Increasingly, they are looking for a business plan to include two sections: one relating to online strategy (in terms of e-marketing, social media and ROI) and the second relating to corporate social responsibility (including quality, health, safety and environment policies).

The inclusion of these topics gives more credibility to the company by demonstrating its commitment to the community and to employees’ well-being.

Telling a Story 

One trend in business planning is to use a narrative structure in the document, rather than traditional technical writing techniques. Storytelling techniques are increasingly being used throughout the business world to create personal and organizational brands, deliver marketing messages and develop persuasive plans.

Stories make presentations better. Stories make ideas stick. Stories help us persuade. Savvy leaders tell stories to inspire us, motivate us. That’s why so many politicians tell stories in their speeches. They realize that “what you say” is often moot compared to “how you say it.

Instead of using bulleted points and cold, technical language, organizations employ a “beginning, middle and end” narrative style. This engages the audience by establishing the context, describing the conflict or obstacles and arriving at a successful resolution.

The Executive Summary

Usually the last step of preparing the international business plan is to develop the executive summary, a short overview of what the plan proposes to accomplish. For some purposes, a one-page business plan can also be useful.

There is not a great deal of difference between an executive summary and a one-page business plan. The most significant distinction is the one-page plan must completely fit on one page in a readable font, while an executive summary may spread over two or three pages.

One-Page Business Plan

There is a trend towards the one-page business plan, especially if the plan is to be presented to potential partners for their consideration. Audiences for the one-page plan will be looking for a “quick hit”: a clear and concise description of what the opportunity is and how it is being pursued.

For example, a one-page business plan might include the following topics, as described in Noah Parson’s article “How to Write a One-Page Business Plan” on the website Bplans :

  • Customer problem/opportunity
  • Your solution/approach
  • Business model (how you make money)
  • Target market (who is the customer and how many are there)
  • Competitive advantage
  • Management team
  • Financial summary
  • Funding required

The one-page plan (or the executive summary, if used in place of the one-page plan) may provide the first impression the audience has of the business. This is the most important document generated out of the business planning process, and significant effort and care should be taken in its creation.

A Note on Strategic Plans

A strategic plan covers many of the same points as a business plan. However, a strategic plan sets out the detailed action plan to be followed to achieve the objectives of the international business plan.

It must outline specific activities, their due dates and who is responsible for each activity. It is a project plan with a critical path. A strategic plan ensures any venture is carried out in a coordinated, informed and systematic way.

A key consideration in action planning is how quickly to enter the market, which is driven by the chosen market entry strategy. If market entry is done too quickly, the potential for costly mistakes increases. However, if it is completed too slowly, opportunities may be missed and competitors will have more time to react.

The Planning Cycle

Attaching the word “cycle” to planning implies that it happens more than once. International business plans need to be reviewed periodically because new information that has an impact on both planning and operations is continually coming in.

All plans, including international business plans and strategic plans, need to be reviewed every time there is a major event impacting the business, such as civil unrest, a currency fluctuation or the presence of a new competitor.

1. Retail Profit

इस इनकम के अनुसार आप कंपनी के प्रॉडक्ट को MRP पर बेचकर Retail Profit अर्थात खुदरा मुनाफा कमा सकते है।

कंपनी द्वारा डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर को प्रॉडक्ट Distributor Price (DP) पर मिलता है, जो की M.R.P. से 20 प्रतिशत से 50 प्रतिशत तक की छूट के होते है और जिन्हे M.R.P. पर बेचकर Retail Profit इनकम पाई जा सकती है।

2. Self Purchase Bonus (SPB)

जैसा, कि नाम से पता चल रहा है, कि इस इनकम के अन्तर्गत खुद प्रॉडक्ट की खरीद करने पर कुछ इनकम मिलती है। यदि कोई डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर 500 BV का प्रॉडक्ट 1 महीने में खरीदता है, तो उसे 1 SPB Point मिलता है, जिसकी वैल्यू लगभग 25 रूपए से 30 रूपए तक होती है।

हर 500 BV पर 1 SPB Point मिलता है, जिसे फिर रुपये में बदला जाता है।

3. Consistency Bonus

इस इनकम के अंतर्गत 500 BV या उससे अधिक का सामान लेने पर 15 प्रतिशत कैशबैक मिलता है, जिसका उपयोग अन्य प्रॉडक्ट को खरीदने में किया जा सकता है।

उदाहरणः मान लीजिए जुनैद एक डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर है, जो कि 500 BV का सामान लगातार चार महीने लेता है, तो इस प्रकार उसने 2000 BV का सामान चारों महीने मिला कर लिया और इस इनकम के अनुसार कुल BV का 15 प्रतिशत, अर्थात 2000 BV का 15 प्रतिशत जुनैद को इस इनकम के रूप में मिलेंगे, जोकि 300 रुपए होते है।

4. Working Bonus

इस इनकम को पाने के लिए आपको रिक्रूटमेंट करानी होती है। इस इनकम को पाने के लिए आपको दो लेग में 500 BV करनी होती है और हर 500 BV मैच होने पर कंपनी द्वारा एक Working Bonus Point (WBP) दिया जाता है। जिसे नीचे दी सारणी से समझ सकते है।

उदाहरणः मान लीजिए जुनैद एक डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर और उसके द्वारा 500 BV की मैचिंग की जाती है, जिसमें से उसके एक लेग में 500 BV तथा दूसरे लेग में 600 BV होता है।

चार्ट अनुसार 1000 BV मैचिंग पर 20% कमीशन मिलेगा, जोकि 100 रूपए होते है।

शेष 100 BV अगले महीने के लिए कैरी फॉरवर्ड कर दिया जाएगा। कैरी फॉरवर्ड BV सिर्फ Working Bonus की गणना के प्रयोग में आता है, अन्य इनकम की गणना में कैरी फॉरवर्ड BV को नहीं गिना जाता है।

5. Active Team Bonus

इस बोनस के अंतर्गत Downline के पांचवे लेवल तक प्रति डाउन लाइन के द्वारा अर्जित किया गया Working Bonus का कुछ प्रतिशत इस इनकम के रूप में मिलता है।

6. Leadership Bonus

इस इनकम के अंतर्गत कंपनी के कुल मासिक टर्नओवर में से 10 प्रतिशत इनकम सभी Qualifiers के बीच बांट दिया जाता है।

इस इनकम को पाने के लिए आपको अपने किसी दो लेग में 2,500 BV करनी होती है और हर 2,500 BV मैच होने पर कंपनी द्वारा एक Leadership Bonus Point दिया जाता है, जिसकी वैल्यू लगभग 2,000 से 2,500 रुपए तक होती है।

7. Car Fund

इस इनकम के अन्तर्गत हर 25,000 BV मैच करने पर 1 Car Fund Point मिलता है, जिसकी वैल्यू लगभग 3,500 रूपए से 4,000 रूपए तक होती है।

8. House Fund

उसी प्रकार इस इनकम में हर 50,000 BV करने पर 1 House Fund Point मिलता है, जिसकी वैल्यू लगभग 4,000 रूपए तक होती है।

9. Negocia Royal Fund (NRF)

इस इनकम के अंतर्गत कंपनी अपने कुल मासिक टर्नओवर में से 10 प्रतिशत इनकम सभी Qualifiers के बीच बाटती है। इस इनकम में हर 1,00,000 BV मैच करने पर 1 NRF Point मिलता है, जिसकी वैल्यू लगभग 6,500 रूपए तक होती है।

10. Nominee Fund

इस इनकम के अंतर्गत अगर कंपनी का कोई 18 से 60 वर्ष की आयु के बीच का डिस्ट्रीब्यूटर मर जाता है, तो कंपनी के कुल मासिक BV ओवर का 1% उनके घर वालों को मिलता है।

11. Store Referral Bonus

अगर कोई Negoica का मिनी या सुपर स्टोर खोलता है या खुलवाता है, तो इसमें भी रेफेरल कमीशन मिलता है।

WASHINGTON — Using Inflation Reduction Act funding and as part of ongoing efforts to improve tax compliance in high-income categories, the Internal Revenue Service announced today plans to begin dozens of audits on business aircraft involving personal use.

The audits will be focused on aircraft usage by large corporations, large partnerships and high-income taxpayers and whether for tax purposes the use of jets is being properly allocated between business and personal reasons.

The IRS will be using advanced analytics and resources from the Inflation Reduction Act to more closely examine this area, which has not been closely scrutinized during the past decade as agency resources fell sharply. The number of audits related to aircraft usage could increase in the future following initial results and as the IRS continues hiring additional examiners.

“During tax season, millions of people are doing the right thing by filing and paying their taxes, and they should have confidence that everyone is also following the law,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. “Personal use of corporate jets and other aircraft by executives and others have tax implications, and it’s a complex area where IRS work has been stretched thin. With expanded resources, IRS work in this area will take off. These aircraft audits will help ensure high-income groups aren’t flying under the radar with their tax responsibilities.”

Business aircraft are often used for both business and personal reasons by officers, executives, other employees, shareholders and partners. In general, the tax code passed by Congress allows a business deduction for expenses of maintaining an asset, such as a corporate jet, if that asset is utilized for a business purpose. However, the use of a company aircraft must be allocated between business use and personal use. This is a complex area of tax law, and record-keeping can be challenging.

For someone such as an executive using the company jet for personal travel, the amount of personal usage impacts eligibility for certain business deductions. Use of the company jet for personal travel typically results in income inclusion by the individual using the jet for personal travel and could also impact the business’s eligibility to deduct costs related to the personal travel.

The examination of corporate jet usage is part of the IRS Large Business and International division’s “campaign” program. Campaigns apply different compliance streams to help address areas with a high risk of non-compliance. These efforts include issue-focused examinations, taxpayer outreach and education, tax form changes and focusing on particular issues that present a high risk of noncompliance.

The IRS will begin conducting examinations in the near future as part of the agency’s commitment to ensuring fairness in tax administration.

This is part of a larger effort  the IRS is taking to ensure large corporate, large partnerships and high-income individual filers pay the taxes they owe. Prior to the Inflation Reduction Act, more than a decade of budget cuts prevented the IRS from keeping pace with the increasingly complicated set of tools that the wealthiest taxpayers use to shelter or manipulate their income to avoid taxes. The IRS is now taking swift and aggressive action to close this gap.

In addition to work on corporate jets, the IRS has a variety of efforts underway to improve tax compliance in complex, overlooked high-dollar areas where the agency did not have adequate resources prior to Inflation Reduction Act funding.

For example, the IRS is continuing to pursue millionaires that have not paid hundreds of millions of dollars in tax debt. The IRS has already collected $482 million in ongoing efforts to recoup taxes owed by 1,600 millionaires with action continuing in this area. Elsewhere, the IRS is pursuing multi-million-dollar partnership balance sheet discrepancies, ramping up audits of more than 75 of the largest partnerships using artificial intelligence (AI) as well as other areas .

"The IRS continues to increase scrutiny on high-income taxpayers as we work to reverse the historic low audit rates and limited focus that the wealthiest individuals and organizations faced in the years that predated the Inflation Reduction Act,” Werfel said. “We are adding staff and technology to ensure that the taxpayers with the highest income, including partnerships, large corporations and millionaires and billionaires, pay what is legally owed under federal law. The IRS will have more announcements to make in this important area."

NASA explains how it would alert the public of an apocalyptic asteroid strike

When the Chicxulub impactor, a six-mile-wide asteroid, struck Earth 66 million years ago, the dinosaurs had no warning . 

If an asteroid that size hit Earth today, a shock wave two million times more powerful than a hydrogen bomb would flatten forests and trigger tsunamis. A seismic pulse equal to a magnitude 10 earthquake would crumble cities. And long after the impact, a cloud of hot dust, ash, and steam would blot out the sun, plunging the Earth into freezing cold. 

But at least we'd probably know it was coming ahead of time. And if NASA has anything to say about it, we may even be able to prevent the apocalypse. 

NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office is tasked with finding, tracking, and assessing the risk associated with potentially hazardous asteroids in our solar system.

“We definitely want to find all those before they find us,” said Lindley Johnson , Lead Program Executive for the Planetary Defense Coordination Office.

To do that, NASA works with a global coalition of astronomers called the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN). 

Here’s what they would do if an apocalyptic asteroid strike was headed toward Earth. 

An international warning system 

In the event that a dangerous asteroid is headed toward Earth, IAWN has procedures in place to notify the public. 

First, the party members who detected the threat would share their observations across the IAWN network to verify their findings and assess the danger.

Once all parties agree that Earth should brace for impact, NASA would send out an alert.

“I don’t have a red phone on my desk or anything,” Johnson said. “But we do have formal procedures by which notification of a serious impact would be provided.”

If the asteroid was headed toward the US, NASA would notify the White House, and the government would release a formal statement to the public. If it was big enough to pose an international threat, IAWN would notify the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs.

Hunting for asteroids 

An asteroid is considered “ potentially hazardous ” if it is larger than roughly 460 feet across and intersects Earth’s orbit at a minimum distance of 0.5 astronomical units, which is half the distance between Earth and the sun. 

There are about 2,300 known potentially hazardous asteroids out there, and roughly 153 of them are larger than 0.6 miles across. That’s big enough to trigger a catastrophe if one struck Earth.

To find and track them, NASA and the other IAWN partners look for new asteroids in addition to tracking ones that have already been discovered. All their observations get compiled into a database at the Minor Planet Center.

So far, IAWN has found over 34,000 near-Earth asteroids. With enough observational data, NASA can confidently predict their orbits at least a century into the future, Johnson said.

There’s a slim chance that the potentially hazardous Bennu asteroid could hit Earth in 159 years, triggering an explosion equal to 24 nuclear bombs. But the odds of that happening are only about one in 2,700, according to a 2021 study .

If Bennu does head toward Earth, NASA has a few tricks up its sleeve to defend our planet.

Defending Earth

Most of the time, IAWN catches oncoming asteroids long before they become an immediate threat to Earth, according to Johnson. But NASA would need at least five to 10 years of advanced notice to prevent the apocalypse from an approaching asteroid. 

In 2021, NASA launched its first planetary defense test mission . It rammed an uncrewed spacecraft into an asteroid to shift its orbit away from Earth.

The mission was a success, and NASA plans to test more deflection techniques in the future. A developing “gravity tractor” technique would send a spacecraft to stay in position next to the asteroid and allow the gravitational interaction to pull the asteroid out of its orbit. NASA is also working on a technique that uses an ion beam to shift an asteroid's course.

But if the threat was coming in less than five years, NASA wouldn’t have time to deflect the asteroid. Then, it might resort to destruction to minimize and disperse the impact.

If NASA only had a few months of warning, then there’s not much it could do to save Earth .

Thankfully, IAWN’s strategy is to find asteroids decades, if not centuries, before the impact. 

“That gives us plenty of time to then try to do something about them while they’re still in space, so that we completely avoid any catastrophe here on Earth,” Johnson said.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav

Warner Bros. Discovery has become the first Hollywood conglomerate to turn a profit for its streaming unit for a full year. In 2023, the company, led by CEO David Zaslav, reported a profit of $103 million, compared with a loss of nearly $2.1 billion for all of 2022 for what it calls its “Direct-to-Consumer,” or DTC, unit.

The company had improved its streaming unit bottom line throughout two of the first three quarters of 2023. In the first quarter , it had swung to a $50 million profit from a year-ago loss of $654 million. In the second quarter, its streaming loss narrowed to $3 million compared with a bigger year-earlier loss. And in the third quarter, its $111 million streaming profit compared with a $634 million loss a year earlier.

All in all, WBD had entered fourth-quarter earnings season as the only Hollywood giant approaching a profitable year in the unit housing its streaming business. Over the first nine months of this year, it had swung from a loss of $1.85 billion for the January-to-September 2022 period to a $158 million profit for the first three quarters of 2023, saying it would break even or even post a profit for all of 2023.

WBD on Friday also gave an update on its global streaming subscriber base, which had ended the third quarter at 95.1 million, down from 95.8 million in the second quarter. The company ended 2023 with a total of 97.7 million streaming subscribers. “Total DTC subscribers were 97.7 million which included 1.3 million subscribers from our acquisition of BluTV,” WBD said. “Excluding BluTV and TNT Sports Chile, subscribers increased by 0.5 million.”

Full-year DTC unit revenue climbed 5 percent to nearly $10.2 billion. Among the contributing factors were higher ad revenue and the fact that WBD has been licensing more of its content to third parties.

Operating expenses in the segment dropped 3 percent in the fourth quarter, and selling, general and administrative expenses declined 8 percent, “primarily driven by more efficient marketing-related spend,” the company said.

With Netflix profitable and being seen by some observers as the king of streaming , Wall Street has been looking for Hollywood conglomerates to make their streaming business units profitable after an initial focus on subscriber growth. These units are not directly comparable though as they sometimes don’t include all streaming operations of a company or include additional business. WBD’s DTC segment, for example, consists of its streaming and premium pay-TV services, meaning HBO is part of it.

WBD on Friday also posted free cash flow, a key performance metric for management, for its fourth quarter that pushed its full-year 2023 figure above its guidance target.  

The company also achieved its year-end goal for debt reduction. Its net leverage ratio, defined as total debt divided by the sum of the most recent four quarters of adjusted EBITDA, came in at 3.9 times as of the end of 2023. WBD had targeted ending the year at four times or below.

On the call, CFO Gunnar Weidenfels indicated that the ad situation as improving in the current quarter: “Domestic ad sales are pacing meaningfully better quarter to date as we are beginning to capture the benefits of our strong upfront deals start last year,” he said.

And its studios segment reported an earnings miss amid difficult year-over-year comparisons, the impact of the dual Hollywood strikes and the fact that the company released more movies in the fourth quarter than in the year-ago period, meaning higher marketing costs. Adjusted EBITDA for the unit fell 30 percent to $543 million as revenue decreased 18 percent to $3.2 billion.

Within the studios unit, content revenue declined 20 percent, “TV revenue declined significantly primarily due to the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and certain large licensing deals in the prior year,” but theatrical revenue “increased due to the larger release slate in the current year quarter ( Wonka , Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , and The Color Purple ),” WBD noted. “Games revenue increased meaningfully due to the continued performance of Hogwarts Legacy , including the fourth-quarter launch on the Nintendo Switch.”

So-called other revenue rose 12 percent in the fourth quarter, helped by the performance of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo, “partially offset by the impact of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes on studio production services.”

Fourth-quarter networks unit revenue at WBD dropped 8 percent to $5 billion, with adjusted EBITDA falling 11 percent to $2.2 billion. The AT&T SportsNet business exit “negatively impacted” the year-over-year comparison, the conglomerate said.

Distribution revenue decreased 3 percent, “primarily driven by declines in U.S. pay-TV subscribers, exiting the AT&T SportsNet business, and the transfer of TNT Sports Chile from Networks to direct-to-consumer, partially offset by increases in U.S. contractual affiliate rates and inflationary impacts in Argentina.”

Advertising revenue decreased 14 percent, “primarily driven by audience declines in domestic general entertainment and news networks and soft linear advertising markets mainly in the U.S. and, to a lesser extent, certain international markets, as well as exiting the AT&T SportsNet business.”

“After executing against our strategic plan to reposition the company, we are now on solid footing with a clear pathway to growth,” said Zaslav in the earnings report Friday. “We generated $6.2 billion in free cash flow and paid down $5.4 billion in debt in 2023, which puts us at 3.9 times net leverage.”

WBD shares were down more than 5 percent in premarket trading.

More Wall Street Firms Are Flip-Flopping on Climate. Here’s Why.

Financial giants were already trimming their climate pledges amid Republican attacks. Then came concerns about legal risks.

Many of the world’s biggest financial firms spent the past several years burnishing their environmental images by pledging to use their financial muscle to fight climate change.

Now, Wall Street has flip-flopped.

In recent days, giants of the financial world including JPMorgan, State Street and Pimco all pulled out of a group called Climate Action 100+, an international coalition of money managers that was pushing big companies to address climate issues.

Wall Street’s retreat from earlier environmental pledges has been on a slow, steady glide path for months, particularly as Republicans began withering political attacks, saying the investment firms were engaging in “woke capitalism.”

But in the past few weeks, things accelerated significantly. BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, scaled back its involvement in the group. Bank of America reneged on a commitment to stop financing new coal mines, coal-burning power plants and Arctic drilling projects. And Republican politicians, sensing momentum, called on other firms to follow suit.

The reasons behind the burst of activity reveal how difficult it is proving to be for the business world to make good on its promises to become more environmentally responsible. While many companies say they are committed to combating climate change, the devil is in the details.

“This was always cosmetic,” said Shivaram Rajgopal, a professor at Columbia Business School. “If signing a piece of paper was getting these companies into trouble, it’s no surprise they’re getting the hell out.”

American asset managers have a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of their clients, and the financial firms were worried that a new strategy by Climate Action 100+ could expose them to legal risks.

Since its founding in 2017, the group focused on getting publicly traded companies to increase how much information they shared about their emissions and identify climate-related risks to their businesses.

But last year, Climate Action 100+ said it would shift its focus toward getting companies to reduce emissions with what it called phase two of its strategy. The new plan called on asset-management firms to begin pressuring companies like Exxon Mobil and Walmart to adopt policies that could entail, for example, using fewer fossil fuels.

In addition to the risk that some clients might disapprove, and potentially sue, there were other concerns. Among them: that acting in concert to shape the behaviors of other companies could fall afoul of antitrust regulations.

“In our judgment, making this new commitment across our assets under management would raise legal considerations, particularly in the U.S.,” a BlackRock spokesman said in a statement.

BlackRock also said that one of its subsidiaries, BlackRock International, would continue to participate in the group — a tacit acknowledgment of the different regulatory environment in Europe. BlackRock also said it was initiating new features that would let clients choose if they wanted to pressure companies to reduce their emissions.

A State Street spokesman said that the company also saw potential legal risks, and that the firm determined the new approach “will not be consistent with our independent approach to proxy voting” and to engaging with the companies it invests in.

JPMorgan said it was pulling out of the group in recognition of the fact that, over the past few years, the firm had developed its own framework for engaging on climate risk.

On Friday, the day after JPMorgan, BlackRock and State Street pulled out, Pimco, another big asset manager, followed suit. “We have concluded that our Climate Action 100+ participation is no longer aligned with PIMCO’s approach to sustainability,” a firm spokesman said in a statement.

A spokesman for Goldman Sachs Asset Management, another member, declined to comment on Saturday when asked if it planned to remain in the group.

The fracturing of Climate Action 100+ was a victory for Representative Jim Jordan, Republican of Ohio, who has led a campaign against companies pursuing E.S.G. goals, shorthand for environmental, social and governance factors.

Embracing E.S.G. principles and speaking up on climate issues has become commonplace across corporate America in recent years. Chief executives warned about the dangers of climate change. Banks and asset managers formed alliances to phase out fossil fuels. Trillions of dollars were allocated for sustainable investing.

At the same time, a backlash grew, with Republicans claiming that banks and asset mangers were supporting progressive politics with their climate commitments.

Some states, including Texas and West Virginia, banned banks from doing business with the state if the firms were distancing themselves from fossil fuel companies. And late in 2022, Mr. Jordan began an antitrust investigation into the group , calling it a “climate-obsessed corporate ‘cartel.’”

On Thursday, he said in on a post on X that the news represented “big wins for freedom and the American economy, and we hope more financial institutions follow suit in abandoning collusive ESG actions.”

Mindy Lubber, the chief executive of Ceres and a member of the steering committee of Climate Action 100+, disputed the notion that the new strategy represented a change from the focus on enhanced disclosure.

“Phase two is not that different,” she said. “It’s basically investors working with companies and saying: ‘OK, you’ve disclosed the risk. We just want to know how you’re going to address it.’ Because that’s what the investors want. How are you dealing with risk?”

Ms. Lubber said she was disappointed that the big asset managers had pulled out of Climate Action 100+, but hoped that they would continue to pursue efforts to reduce the risks posed by the heat waves, floods, fires and storms being made worse by man-made global warming. “You cannot make a new theory that climate risk is no longer a material financial risk ,” she said.

Several of the firms that backed out of Climate Action 100+ said they remained committed to the issue. JPMorgan said that it had a team of 40 people working on sustainable investing and that it believed “climate change continues to present material economic risks and opportunities to our clients.”

Aron Cramer, chief executive for BSR, a sustainable-business consultancy, said the Wall Street firms were responding to political pressure, but not abandoning their climate commitments altogether.

“The political cost has heightened, the legal risk has heightened,” he said. “That said, these corporations are not doing U-turns,” he added. “They continue to consider climate. That’s not going away. It’s adapting to the current environment.”

These borrowers are likely to be eligible for Biden's new student loan forgiveness plan

  • The Biden administration has been working on a new student loan aid package that could come as soon as this year.

While Biden first attempted to cancel student debt through an executive order, he has now turned to the rulemaking process.

  • Here's who may qualify.

Since the Biden administration's first student loan forgiveness plan was rejected at the Supreme Court , it has been working on creating a new, legally viable relief package.

That debt cancellation could come as soon as this year . The alternative plan, which has become known as  Biden's "Plan B ," could forgive the student debt for as many as 10 million people, according to  one estimate .

The U.S. Department of Education and the negotiators tasked with determining who will be eligible for the president's revised aid have identified five groups of borrowers.

1. Those who owe more than they borrowed

Borrowers with outstanding federal student loan balances that exceed what they originally borrowed may be among those who qualify for the cancellation.

A person's student debt can balloon for a number of reasons, said Nadine Chabrier , a senior policy and litigation counsel at the Center for Responsible Lending.

"Unfortunately, it is very common," Chabrier said.

Student loan servicers, the companies the Education Department contract with to service its debt, have a record of steering consumers into forbearances and deferments, she said. These options for  struggling borrowers  can keep loans on hold for many years, but interest often continues to accrue. 

Scott Buchanan, executive director of the Student Loan Servicing Alliance, a trade group for federal student loan servicers, denied that the companies benefit by veering from the government's orders.

"We are incentivized to meet the requirements that the government sets, which includes giving borrowers the benefits that the law provides," Buchanan said. "We are audited, and get business or lose it based on meeting those standards."

Advocates have also said the interest rates on federal student loans are too high, especially for borrowers from the 1980s , who have rates exceeding 8%. Current fixed rates today can be nearly as high .

2. Borrowers in repayment for 20 years or more

Those who have been carrying their student debt for decades may also benefit.

With many of the Education Department's repayment plans requiring 20 years or more of payments, such stories are common. Millions of Americans older than 60 are still paying off their student loans , research finds.

"There is both financial harm and psychological harm of being in debt for decades, especially when it feels like there is no hope that it will ever be repaid," said Persis Yu , deputy executive director at the Student Borrower Protection Center.

3. Attendees of schools of questionable quality

In its revised relief package, the Biden administration notes it is looking to include student loan borrowers who attended career-training programs "that created unreasonable debt loads or provided insufficient earnings for graduates," as well as borrowers who attended institutions with high student loan default rates.

4. People eligible for forgiveness who haven't applied

The Education Department already has several programs that lead to student loan forgiveness, and as part of its new aid package, it is looking to identify those who may be eligible but just haven't applied.

However, the technical and often confusing requirements of the plan have acted as a barrier, experts say.

5. Borrowers experiencing financial hardship

The Biden administration has also said it wants to forgive the debt of those experiencing financial hardship.

So far, it has proposed a set of factors that could identify struggling borrowers, such as those with student loan balances and required payments that are unreasonable relative to their household income, and people with high child care and health-care expenses.
