A Tour of American Airlines' Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
Since taking delivery of its first Boeing 787 in January 2015, American Airlines has added to its fleet almost one Dreamliner per month. It's scheduled to bring another eight into its fleet in 2018-2019 before starting to take deliveries of a new order of 47 aircraft . In total, American Airlines will have 89 Dreamliners (42 of the smaller 787-8 model and 47 of the larger 787-9)
While the experience in economy is going to be practically the same between the 787-8 and 787-9, there are some noteworthy differences that make that last digit important for premium cabins. If you booked or are looking to book a 787-9, which is often considered better for business class passengers, you might be curious what to expect. So, let's take a look around inside one of those American Airlines Boeing 787-9s.
For reference, the aircraft was stocked for a flight to Seoul, South Korea (ICN).
Flagship Business
While there's a couple of passengers I know that prefer the business class seats on the 787-8, the Zodiac "Concept D" seating is generally disliked for the narrow and unstable seats — landing it #7 on TPG's ranking of the best American Airlines premium seats . However, on the 787-9, there are excellent B/E Aerospace Super Diamond seats installed in the business class cabin (which was #2 in those same rankings). And while you can find these same seats on select 777-200 aircraft, I prefer the window seats on the 787-9 thanks to the large electronically-dimmable Dreamliner windows.
The 787-9 business class consists of one large cabin arranged in eight rows of reverse-herringbone 1-2-1 seating. There are no middle seats in row 8, meaning there are 30 business class seats on the aircraft.
The aisle-side armrest can adjust upward and downward. This bulky-looking armrest can be opened to provide a storage area. In addition to this storage area, there are two compartments on the other side of the seat. The further-back one can be latched and is rated for storage during taxi, takeoff and landing. The forward compartment technically isn't supposed to be used for storage during the critical phases of flight.
Between having all forward-facing seats and strategically designed seat shells, these seats provide a good sense of privacy. However, when walking around the cabin, you can easily see over these seat shells.
There's a couple of downsides to this otherwise excellent hard product. First, American Airlines opted not to install the optional privacy divider between the middle seats. That must have been a very expensive option, as I can't see any reason not to allow passengers to have it. Also, my wife Katie isn't a fan of the storage position of the tray table on these seats, as she bumps into it when sleeping on her side.
For more about the in-flight experience, read the full review of this cabin on a flight from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to São Paulo, Brazil (GRU).
Premium Economy
The delivery of American Airlines' first 787-9 meant the debut of Premium Economy on the world's largest airline. As of March 11, the airline had 69 aircraft with the new product — including all 15 of its 787-9, all 15 of the Airbus A330-200s, 35 of its 777-200s and now four of its 777-300ER aircraft. The seats on all of those aircraft are virtually the same.
On the 787-9, there are 21 seats installed in a 2-3-2 arrangement.
Some passengers prefer the bulkhead seats, as they have a retractable leg rest and plenty of legroom. The downside is that the in-flight entertainment for these seats is on retractable arms and must be stored for taxi, takeoff and landing.
The non-bulkhead seats have a footrest instead of the legrest. I find the recline on all of the premium economy seats to be just enough to sleep comfortably.
In the seatback, there's a pocket for literature such as the airline magazines and the safety card. There's also a coat/purse hook. Below that, there's a mesh seatback pocket. While you might be able to store a tablet in the seatback, I've found neither storage area is large enough to hold even a small laptop.
While they surely give you more space than in economy, these aren't the most spacious seats. The space between them is 38 inches, and your workspace shrinks noticeably when the passenger in front of your reclines.
The premium economy seats have 11.5-inch in-flight entertainment screens installed. While bright and crisp from the seat, these screens are designed to fade when looking at an angle, providing a bit of privacy and reducing light pollution in the cabin.
While those aren't the best premium economy seats you'll find in the skies, the airline looks to make up for this with solid soft product. On international flights, each seat is stocked with a basic, but stylish amenity kit, Casper-branded pillow and Casper-branded blanket . On flights to Asia, Casper-branded slippers are also provided.
Stay tuned for a full review of American Airlines premium economy on an international flight. Here's my take from the first time flying this product when it launched in October 2016 on domestic routes.
Main Cabin Extra
Main Cabin Extra is American Airlines' designation for extra-legroom seats in the economy cabin . In addition to seats at bulkheads and emergency exit rows, most economy cabins on AA internationally-configured aircraft include a section of extra-legroom seats. These seats are complimentary for American Airlines AAdvantage Platinum, Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum elites. AA Gold elites get 50% off the standard price until check-in, when they too can select these seats for no charge.
On the 787-9, American Airlines has 36 Main Cabin Extra seats — 12 at bulkheads, 6 at emergency exit rows and 18 standard seats in a 3-3-3 arrangement. The bulkhead seats provide plenty of knee room, but limits your ability to stretch out your legs. The first row of economy (row 12) have bassinet holders at both the window and middle sections.
The emergency exit window seats on some aircraft can have restricted legroom due to the protruding slide. That's not much of an issue on the 787-9. However, there isn't much of a view from these seats either.
At each of the bulkhead and emergency exit row seats, the in-flight entertainment screens are on retractable arms and must be stored for taxi, takeoff and landing.
The standard Main Cabin Extra seats are installed with 35 inches of pitch but are otherwise identical to standard economy seats. There are no additional service elements either. However, American Airlines is planning to add free beer, wine and liquor for these seats on all routes soon.
AA's 787-9 has 200 standard economy "Main Cabin" seats. These seats are installed with 31 inches of pitch. As is now the de facto standard on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, the economy cabin is arranged with 3-3-3 seating. (Only a few airlines opted for the Boeing-recommended 2-4-2 seating ). This arrangement necessitates a rather narrow 17-inch seat.
Thankfully, there's plenty of overhead space. So, you shouldn't have to worry about having to gate-check your carry-on bag.
Unlike other aircraft that American Airlines flies internationally, AA installs bright in-flight entertainment screens with plenty of content on its 787-9. There's also a universal power plug installed at each seat.
Unlike on some planes which narrow in the back and thus have fewer seats installed, the 787-9 has 3-3-3 seating throughout. If you get stuck in the back, the good news is that even the seats in the last row of economy can recline fully.
And if you're going to recline to sleep, these seats have an under-appreciated feature: adjustable headrests. The headrest has adjustable wings to help support your head in place while you sleep.
Overall Impression
The American Airlines 787-9 is one of the better options in the airline's international fleet. The economy seats are a bit narrow, but it's no worse than the width on AA's retrofit 10-wide 777s . And, having power and in-flight entertainment screen makes the 787 a better option than AA's internationally-operated 757s and 767s.
The premium economy section provides a solid improvement from economy, giving extra legroom, seat width and soft product elements that can justify the ~$200 each way premium for some passengers.
Up front, this is one of my favorite business class cabins in the fleet. The cabin is large — but not massive — and separated from the premium economy by a galley, giving it a more exclusive feel. Combining that with one of the best business class seats in the AA fleet, it's worth seeking out this aircraft when possible.

About the Boeing 787-9
The Boeing 787-9 “Dreamliners” got their nickname from a worldwide competition Boeing held in 2003. In 2015, we introduced this aircraft type to the KLM fleet. Long flights are no problem for the Dreamliner, as it is very fuel efficient. Since this aircraft can fly up to 8,500 nautical miles, it can even cover our longest routes – like flying from New York City to Bangkok.
You might encounter this 787-9 when flying to Delhi, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Bogota, Cartagena, or Salt Lake City, although these destinations may differ per season. "A technical marvel” as we call the 787-9, because it’s a result of hundreds of engineers from around the world working together. This lightweight aircraft can easily be recycled, because it consists of 50% composite, 20% aluminium, 15% titanium, 10% steel, and 5% other materials, generating less waste and chemicals than a similar aircraft.
Aircraft names
Our 787-9 Dreamliners are all named after flowers. “Sunflower” was the 1st, followed by: Carnation, Lavender, Bougainvillea, Dahlia, Mimosa, Jasmine, Lily, Marguerite, 芙蓉 (hibiscus), Morning Star, Tulip, and Orchid.

Very good seat
It was my second time on an Air Canada 787. After my previous flight, I made a promise to myself to never fly on an AC 787 again. But I had no real choice this time and I, reluctantly, flew on a 787 again. It didn't change my previous opinion at all. The seats are extremely narrow. In economy class, it's a horrible airplane to fly on. Avoid Air Canada's B787 at all cost, if you can.
Seat was acceptable but I’m only 5’7”. Not much chance to change position on a 9+ hour flight.‘Food was not good, except for the cookies and brownies!
I was very comfortable and the flight crew was great
18K is a preferred seat. There is a bulkhead, so legroom is not as good as exit row seats, but still much better than regular economy. There are no lavatories nearby, so nobody is crowding your area, no noises or smells. I got a window seat so that I could look out the window... However, about an hour into the flight crew darkened all windows, and disabled individual controls. Windows remained tinted until end of flight. This is apparently a common occurrence with AC... If you want a window seat for actually looking out the window, you might want to reconsider with the 787.
Despite being a "preferred" seat advertising extra legroom, this is not true due to the bulkhead directly in front of the seat. As someone who's 6'3, there was not enough room to extend my legs and it was quite uncomfortable. Other aircraft (and other airlines) provide a lot more legroom in their preferred seats. Also, as someone else said, this is the row with the bassinet, so there's a good chance there will be a baby sitting nearby. Luckily the one in my row was quiet the whole time.
I am 6’ 2”. Seat has great legroom as it is by wing exit. I can’t get comfortable enough to sleep on a plane but this eat allows you to at least stretch out. Downside is that is right by restrooms......you need to be tolerant of the other passengers as they unavoidably bump into you and step on your feet.
I flew Air Canada's 787-9 from Vancouver to Shanghai and back. Everything was okay. The seat had ample legroom, although it was not spacious. Service, entertainment and food were also alright. Overall, Air Canada's 787 is a perfectly acceptable aircraft for long haul travel. The experience is definitely not one that I would pay more or go out of the way for. However, if the price was right and the timing was convenient again, I wouldn't mind taking Air Canada again.
Sat in the business class seat which was shaped as a pod. Overall, I like these seats since they provide privacy, a large video screen for entertainment, work space and a lie-flat bed. The bed I felt was narrow, and tapers towards your feet which does not allow much freedom for your feet if you like to reposition them while sleeping. The pods are pointed towards the windows, unlike the older versions which were pointed towards the aisle. You also get air nozzles directed down towards you which is great for comfort when using blankets when sleeping.
Looks like the major issue of Air Canada configuration cabin is about the lack of lavatories. Company should install at least 2 more lavatories on each plane to avoid long lines in corridors bothering passagers, long time waiting and gathering around WC. Overall the seats are OK for economy and premium, but if you can't go when you gotta go, it ruins entirelly the experience of a 10 hours flight. Just needs more lavatories.
These pods are cramped and uncomfortable - lots of wasted space. Probably good for lie flat sleep. The IFE and noise cancelling headphones are great. Meal was terrible. They ran out of one premium wine after I had 2/3 of a glass. Glad I was not in economy on this full flight from yvr to yyz
25% of the right site were blocked by the emergency exit. Seat was next to the toiletts and people geather in front of your seat.
I had not checked about this aircraft before booking YVR-MEL, and was very concerned when seeing that this site showed 30" pitch in coach, having flown another 787 with 30" stated pitch. The worry was foundless - the seat was closer to 32". The neighbouring seat happened to be empty, so it was a reasonable 15-hour flight.
Seat 18G was somewhat uncomfortable due to not being able to extend legs fully due to bulkhead wall. Was sat next to an infant in this seat due to bassinet in the bulkhead. Luckily baby was asleep most of the 9hr flight, but would be an issue if she kicked off screaming. I suspect you're basically guaranteed to sit next to an infant in this section. TV monitor pulls out from under right armrest, but sits at a bit of an awkward angle, but worked fine. Seat is good to be able to stand up and stretch at any time. Not sure it was worth the extra money, but it was either that or 45A.
Terrible seat pitch and width in economy class, very uncomfortable on a long haul flight. Other airlines I've flown with had much more comfortable seats in the same aircraft.
The seat pitch was grossly inadequate for a person 6' 2", for the long overnight flight from Toronto to Vienna (Austria), the seat was very uncomfortable and since Air Canada has 9 seats in 3-3-3 configuration the aisles are narrow and passengers walking to/from washrooms bump into seated ones thus constantly disturbing them; the experience was of a "Nightmare-liner" not "Dreamliner".
The seat was comfortable with more than sufficient leg room. There was difficulty/inability y to adjust the location of the arm rest tv as little to no flexibility to be able to do so. Also the jog in the aisle between business class setting and row 18 made It difficult for flight attendants to manoeuvre and passenger had to exercise caution as well.
Travelled London to Calgary in seat A8 and in seat A6 on return, both were comfortable and the service was excellent. In A8 I was not disturbed by noise from toilets or galley. In A6 the blank window of A5 helped reduce light glare. My first time in business with Air Canada and found the heavy padded seat belt a little strange but got used to this.
Seat 18H is a standard bulkhead seat, but it was inconvenient due to the bend in the aisle going into Premium Economy. Flight attendants backing up the aisle with service carts frequently bumped the seat, sometimes with a lot of force (enough to spill red wine in one instance). I sit exclusively in aisle seats, so know enough to not hang out into the aisle. I would not choose this seat again. I assume 18C would have the same issues.
Very cold seat. Good space for legs cause no seat are in front. Very poor duty free on board.

Hawaiian airlines first boeing 787 is on its way to honolulu.
The long-awaited Hawaiian Airlines' first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is on its way to Honolulu and should arrive late on Wednesday evening.
- The arrival of Hawaiian Airlines' first Boeing 787 Dreamliner is long overdue but highly anticipated due to its new technology, fuel efficiency, and improved passenger experience.
- The Dreamliner's delivery to Hawaiian Airlines is the result of a short time between its first flight and delivery, unlike another 787-9 aircraft that flew years ago but have not been delivered yet.
- Hawaiian will offer flights with the Dreamliner between Honolulu and various cities, including San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Maui, with a three-class layout featuring luxurious Leihoku Suites in business class.
To say the arrival of the first Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 787 Dreamliner is long overdue or eagerly anticipated would be a gross understatement. The aircraft that was ordered nearly six years ago is finally on its way to Honolulu and (at the time of writing) is due to touch down in Hawaii on Wednesday, February 14, at 22:08.
A new day dawns at Hawaiian Airlines
There are so many reasons for the team at Hawaiian Airlines (Hawaiian) to be excited about the imminent arrival of the Dreamliner, including new generation technology, reduced fuel burn, lower emissions and operational cost and the greatly enhanced passenger experience compared to the existing fleet of Airbus A330-200s.
According to data from ch-aviation , Hawaiian placed the order for the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in July 2018, and the aircraft is now on its ferry flight. Registered N781HA and MSN 66429, it first flew on December 21, 2023. The short time between the first flight and delivery is in stark contrast to the second 787-9, registration N780HA and MSN 66428, which first flew on June 18, 2021, and is yet to be delivered.
The Flightradar data shows that Dreamliner N781HA was scheduled to depart Charleston International Airport (CHS) on Wednesday at 16:00 but did not leave until 17:23 and is currently estimated (at 03:18 UTC) to land at Honolulu International (HNL) at 22:28.
The second Boeing 787-9, registration N780HA, took its first flight from Charleston on June 18, 2021, and on June 22, 2021, it went from Charleston on a 2:29 hour flight to San Antonio Lackland Air Force Base (SKF). The Dreamliner stayed there until July 29, 2023, when it departed San Antonio for Everett Paine Field (PAE), where it sat idle until two short flights in January this year.
The tracking data shows a January 19, 2024, flight from Everett Paine Field to Victorville Southern California Logistics Airport (VCV), where many an aircraft has met its maker, and the jet remains in the California desert.
What's in store for Hawaiian Passengers
Cirium schedule data shows that between April 15 and October 1, 2024, Hawaiian will operate 617 Dreamliner flights between Honolulu and San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix and between Kahului and Los Angeles. In its first month in service, the 787 will focus on the route between Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International (HNL) and San Francisco International (SFO).
From mid-May, it will operate between Honolulu and Los Angeles International (LAX) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) until early September. From September 8 until October 1, the schedule shows flights between Honolulu and Los Angeles and a new route between Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui and LAX.
Hawaiian is set to receive 12 Dreamliners configured to carry 300 passengers in a three-class layout of 34 Leihoku Suites in business, 79 seats in premium economy and 187 in the economy cabin. The Leihoku Suites will be set in a 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access and are fitted with privacy doors.

The suites feature lie-flat seats, an 18-inch inflight entertainment screen, personal power outlets and wireless cell phone charging. The middle two seats can be left for solo passengers or turned into a shared experience with combinable double suites and a starlight ceiling inspired by the constellations that guided early Polynesian voyagers.

What Are The Best Seats On Vistara's Boeing 787s?
- Vistara's best seats in business class on their Dreamliner fleet are A and K seats in Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8 for window lovers and solo passengers.
- In premium economy, the best seats are the pairs of seats along the windows for a more premium feel and better privacy.
- In Economy, the emergency exit seats in Row 43 offer much more legroom, while the pairs of seats in Row 57 provide more privacy due to the layout's thinning to 2-3-2.
Vistara, the joint-venture airline between India's Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, is an Indian full-service airline that commenced operations in 2015. The airline began taking delivery of their Boeing 787s in March 2020 for their long-haul routes from India to the likes of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom.
Vistara is known for its unique and well-thought-out cabin offerings and extraordinary customer service in all classes of travel. The airline has 299 seats onboard their 787 Dreamlines in three classes of travel: Business, Premium Economy, and Economy.
This article highlights the best seats onboard Vistara's Dreamliner fleet, based on information from ch-aviation .
Business Class
Starting from the front, Vistara's business class cabin offers 30 seats in a four-abreast, 1-2-1 layout. Seats are staggered in layout, meaning that some window seats are actually closer to the aisle while others are proper window seats. Similarly, the middle seats alternate between so-called 'honeymoon' seats, placed right next to each other, and those spaced out with a console between them.
The best seats for window lovers and solo passengers are seats A and K in Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8. These offer extra privacy thanks to the aisle-side console, as well as offering stunning window views throughout the flight.
Want answers to more key questions in aviation? Check out the rest of our guides here !
If you're traveling with someone, it depends on how close you want to be on the flight. Odd-numbered rows (1, 3, 5, 7) offer two seats next to each other, with the consoles by the aisle, while even-numbered rows give you more room from your neighbor. If you travel alone and no more window seats are available, choose the latter.
Too Close To Merger: Vistara Scraps Plans For US Flights
Row 1 seats are also bulkhead seats, which offer a larger foot cubby and are more room since there is no seat ahead. However, since these are used for bassinets, you may have to move if a traveler with an infant requests it. Overall, an actual window seat is the best bet on Vistara's 787-9, a review of which you can read here !
Premium economy
Vistara offers 21 premium economy seats on its 787, and it was the first Indian carrier to introduce this class of travel. These come seven-abreast in a 2-3-2 layout, featuring 38 inches of seat pitch. Row 21, at the front of the cabin, offers passengers more legroom, so that would be a good pick if you're tall or like to stretch out.
However, the downsides of this row include the fact that there is no seatback screen and no storage during takeoff or landing. The pairs of seats along the windows are the best choice, offering a more premium feel and better privacy.
Compared to economy class, Vistara's premium economy cabin sees passengers enjoy more pitch, deeper recline, and a leg rest that deploys from below the seat. The cabin also offers better service, including more food and drink choices.
Finally, we reach the largest and, for the majority of passengers, the most essential section of the plane, namely the economy cabin. Passengers can pick from 248 seats in a 3-3-3 layout for much of the cabin (more on that below). The best choices for passengers will be emergency exit seats in Row 43, especially along the window.
These seats offer much more legroom than their standard counterparts but do, of course, come with the same drawbacks as any other emergency row. For example, passengers can't have bags on hand for safety reasons. However, on a long flight, the additional legroom outweighs the cons for most passengers. In any case, the hidden gem of the cabin is undoubtedly the pairs of seats in row 57.
Due to the fuselage's curvature, the layout thins to 2-3-2, allowing pairs traveling together more privacy. Row 58 also has pairs but no recline, so be sure to avoid that on a seat map. As a general rule, avoiding seats near the galleys and washrooms is useful on overnight flights due to the commotion in these areas. If all else fails, settle for a window or aisle seat in the middle of the cabin and enjoy the flight!
Vistara's present 787 fleet
Let's conclude by looking at the current makeup of Vistara's Dreamliner fleet. Data from ch-aviation shows that, at the time of writing, the carrier has six examples of the Boeing 787-9 model in its fleet, with an average age of 3.33 years old between them. Going forward, a few more examples of the type are on order.
Have you ever flown in one of Vistara's Boeing 787s before? If not, are you excited about trying it out? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
