Rounding Numbers Worksheets with Answers

Rounding numbers will come up in other areas of math, so give your child or pupil a head start with our resources. We have resources available for all levels and abilities, so use Cazoom Maths to help students throughout their math education.

The Importance of Learning to Round Numbers

Learning to round numbers is a very important skill that students will use throughout their math education and into later life.

Rounding decimals up to the nearest whole number can make adding up several numbers faster and easier. This is particularly useful when shopping; by rounding the prices of items to the nearest pound, the total value of the shop can be quickly estimated. This can be helpful to work out if you have enough money to buy all the items on your shopping list. Rounding might also be useful when estimating distance.

Application of Rounding Numbers in Math

It is not always necessary to be exact. Some math questions students come across in their education will result in an extremely long decimal number.

These numbers are very confusing to use in any subsequent calculations, so they are often rounded to make them easier to work with. Hence why instead of writing 3.1415926535 and so on for Pi, we often work with 3.14. This reduces the accuracy of the final answer, but it makes the calculation much simpler. Students will often be required to leave an answer to two decimal places, which involves rounding. In order to be successful in math, especially at higher levels, students need to be confident in how to round both decimals and whole numbers. Worksheets and activities on rounding can help to build confidence and improve technique in this area, preparing children for harder math questions and later life.

Rounding off Multi-digit Whole Number Given its Place Value 4th Grade Math Worksheets

Rounding worksheets & study resources:, brief description:.

Rounding means expressing numbers into their shorter or simpler form without changing much of their value and accuracy. We apply the concepts of rounding numbers in dealing with whole numbers , decimals , and integers. In learning about rounding numbers, students must develop rounding off, rounding up, and rounding down different types of numbers. We can also use the concepts of rounding in teaching lessons about time and measurement.

Importance of the topic:

It is important for the learners to develop the skill of rounding numbers because it would be easier for them to describe and use small and large quantities. At some point, rounding is also the act of estimating quantities for better understanding and easier use. In fact, rounding numbers allow us to make faster calculations in other circumstances rather than determining the accurate answer or value.

Application of the Learned Topic in Life

Rounding numbers have many applications in real-life. For example, when paying a bill amounting to $14.893, you know that the bill is somehow $15. If you only have $20 as your budget for fruits and you know that a pack of mixed fruits costs $3.58, that means that you can only buy at most 5 packs of it. It’s all because you estimate that a pack costs around $4. Aside from these specific events, rounding numbers is also useful in estimating the number of people attending a concert, in predicting the population of a certain town, and more.

Are your students learning to round numbers in 10,100 and 1000? Do you need an exciting and engaging teaching aid to strengthen rounding numbers concept? Our posters and worksheets are perfect for Year 4 students to understand this math concept. Display the posters in your classroom or stick them to your student’s notebooks so they can constantly refer back to it.

What is rounding?

Rounding numbers mean adjusting the value of a number(up or down) to make calculations easier and simpler. The answers given by the rounded numbers are not accurate and precise but close to its value.

Also Read: What is a fronted adverbial?

Rounding Rules:

In the whole numbers, start by looking at the place value of the digit. Next, look at the digit on the right side of your rounding number.

  • If the number is between 1-4, then, you don’t change the rounding number. Only the numbers on the right side turn to zero.

Example : 449 becomes 400 when rounded to the nearest hundreds.

  • If the number is between 5 -9, then, you add 1 to the rounding number and the numbers on right turn to zero.

Example: 7741 becomes 8000 when rounded to nearest thousands .

Rounding Numbers

Here we will learn about rounding including how to round a number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000 , how to round a number to a given number of decimal places and how to round a number to a given number of significant figures. We will also learn about truncation and how we can also use rounded numbers to estimate the solution to a calculation.

There are also rounding worksheets based on Edexcel, AQA and OCR exam questions, along with further guidance on where to go next if you’re still stuck.

What is rounding?

Rounding is when we approximate numbers in order to make them easier to deal with. We need to round down or up depending on which value is nearer.

There are several ways we can be asked to round a number.

1478.27 can be rounded in several ways

  • Rounding to the nearest ones place, 10, 100 and 1000 1478.47 is 1478 rounded to the nearest ones place 1478.47 is 1480 rounded to the nearest 10 1478.47 is 1500 rounded to the nearest 100 1478.47 is 1000 rounded to the nearest 1000
  • Rounding to significant figures 1478.47 is 1000 rounded to 1 significant figure 1478.47 is 1500 rounded to 2 significant figures 1478.47 is 1480 rounded to 3 significant figures
  • Rounding to decimal places 1478.2735 is 1478.3 rounded to 1 decimal place (the nearest tenth) 1478.2735 is 1478.27 rounded to 2 decimal places (the nearest hundredth) 1478.2735 is 1478.274 rounded to 3 decimal places (the nearest thousandth)

Truncating a number and estimation are also linked with rounding:

  • Truncation is cutting a number off at a certain value with no need to round up.
  • Estimation is using the approximated numbers for a calculation; we do not use the exact numbers.

What is rounding?

How to round numbers

In order to round a number:

Identify the number to the right of the place value column you are rounding to

If it is a 4 or less we round down, if it is a 5 or more we round up

Write the answer.

Rounding numbers examples

Example 1: rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.

Round 382 to the nearest 10 .

We are rounding to the nearest 10 so we identify the number to the right of the 8 in the tens column. This is a 2.

2 If it is a 4 or less we round down, if it is a 5 or more we round up

It is a 2 is 4 or less so we round down to 380 .

3 Write the answer.

382 is 380 rounded to the nearest 10

Step-by-step guide: Rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000

Example 2: rounding to decimal places

Round 14.76 to 1 decimal place (to 1 dp).

We are rounding to 1 decimal place so we identify number to the right of the 7 in the first decimal place. This is a 6

6 is more than 5 so we round up to 14.8 .

14.76 is 14.8 rounded to 1 decimal place.

Step-by-step guide: Decimal places

Example 3: rounding to decimal places

Round 25.673 to the nearest whole number.

We are rounding to the nearest whole number so we identify the number to the right of the 5 in the ones column. This is a 6.

6 is more than 5 so we round up to 26 .

25.673 is 26 rounded to the nearest whole number.

Step-by-step guide : Rounding decimals

Example 4: rounding to significant figures

Round 357 to 1 significant figure.

We are rounding to 1 significant figure so we identify the number to the right of 3 in the hundreds column as this is the first significant figure. This is a 5

As the digit is a 5 we round up to 400 .

357 is 400 rounded to 1 significant figure.

Step-by-step guide: Significant figures

Example 5: rounding to significant figures

Round 7.5823 to 2 significant figures (to 2 sf).

We are rounding to 2 significant figures so we identify the number to the right of the 5 in the tenths column as this is the second significant figure. This is an 8.

8 is more that 5 so we round up to 7.6 .

7.5823 is 7.6 rounded to 2 significant figures.

Step-by-step guide: Upper and lower bounds

See also: Place value

Example 6: truncation

Truncate 94.5871 to 2 decimal places (to 2 dp).

Identify the number in the place value column you are truncating to

We are truncating to 2 decimal places so we identify the number in the second decimal place. This is an 8.

Round the number to what is asked for. Round down or up as required.

As we have been asked to truncate the number we can miss off all of the digits after the second decimal place.

94.5871 is 94.58 truncated to 2 decimal places.

Step-by-step guide: Truncation

See also: Error intervals

Example 7: estimation

Estimate the following calculation:

287.1 × 14.7

As we are estimating we need to round each number to 1 significant figure .

In 287.1 we identify the number to the right of the first significant figure. This is an 8.

In 14.7 we identify the number to the right of the first significant figure. This is a 4.

8 is more than 5 so we round 287.1 up to 300.

4 is less than 5 so we round 14.7 down to 10.

The estimated calculation is 300 × 10 = 3000

The estimated answer is is 3000

Step-by-step guide: Estimation

Common misconceptions

  • Remember to put zero in as a place holder before the decimal point

E.g. When we round 2769.1 to the nearest 100 the answer will be 2700 because we need zeros as place holders in the tens and units columns. 2739.1 ≈ 2700

  • Sometimes we need a zero in as a place holder with decimal numbers

E.g. When we round 3.4973 to 2 decimal places the answer will be 3.50 because we need the zero in the hundredths column to show the two decimal places. 3.4973 ≈ 3.50

  • Estimation of numbers within square roots

If your estimation involves a square root symbol, round those numbers to the nearest square number. E.g.

Rounding practice questions

1. Round 193 to the nearest 100 .

GCSE Quiz False

We are rounding to the nearest 100 . Identifying the 9 in the tens column indicates we need to round up.

2. Round 13.782 to 2 decimal places.

We are rounding to 2 decimal places. The 2 in the thousandths column indicates that we should round down.

3. Round 5692 to 2 significant figures.

We are rounding to 2 significant figures. The 9 in the tens column indicates we round up. We need to have zeros in the tens and ones columns as place holders.

4. Round 0.0365 to 2 significant figures.

We are rounding to 2 significant figures. The second significant figure is 6 .

The 5 in the ten thousandths column indicates we round the 6 up.

5.  Truncate 78 to the nearest 10 .

We locate the digit in the tens column and truncate to this degree of accuracy, replacing the digit in the ones column with a zero.

6.  Estimate   341 × 27 .

By first rounding each number to one significant figure, the calculation becomes

300\times30 = 9000

IR-2024-45, Feb. 21, 2024

WASHINGTON — During the busiest time of the tax filing season, the Internal Revenue Service kicked off its 2024 Tax Time Guide series to help remind taxpayers of key items they’ll need to file a 2023 tax return.

As part of its four-part, weekly Tax Time Guide series, the IRS continues to provide new and updated resources to help taxpayers file an accurate tax return. Taxpayers can count on IRS.gov for updated resources and tools along with a special free help page available around the clock. Taxpayers are also encouraged to read Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) for additional guidance.

Essentials to filing an accurate tax return

The deadline this tax season for filing Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return , or 1040-SR, U.S. Tax Return for Seniors , is April 15, 2024. However, those who live in Maine or Massachusetts will have until April 17, 2024, to file due to official holidays observed in those states.

Taxpayers are advised to wait until they receive all their proper tax documents before filing their tax returns. Filing without all the necessary documents could lead to mistakes and potential delays.

It’s important for taxpayers to carefully review their documents for any inaccuracies or missing information. If any issues are found, taxpayers should contact the payer immediately to request a correction or confirm that the payer has their current mailing or email address on file.

Creating an IRS Online Account can provide taxpayers with secure access to information about their federal tax account, including payment history, tax records and other important information.

Having organized tax records can make the process of preparing a complete and accurate tax return easier and may also help taxpayers identify any overlooked deductions or credits .

Taxpayers who have an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or ITIN may need to renew it if it has expired and is required for a U.S. federal tax return. If an expiring or expired ITIN is not renewed, the IRS can still accept the tax return, but it may result in processing delays or delays in credits owed.

Changes to credits and deductions for tax year 2023

Standard deduction amount increased. For 2023, the standard deduction amount has been increased for all filers. The amounts are:

  • Single or married filing separately — $13,850.
  • Head of household — $20,800.
  • Married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse — $27,700.

Additional child tax credit amount increased. The maximum additional child tax credit amount has increased to $1,600 for each qualifying child.

Child tax credit enhancements. Many changes to the Child tax credit (CTC) that had been implemented by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 have expired.

However, the IRS continues to closely monitor legislation being considered by Congress affecting the Child Tax Credit. The IRS reminds taxpayers eligible for the Child Tax Credit that they should not wait to file their 2023 tax return this filing season. If Congress changes the CTC guidelines, the IRS will automatically make adjustments for those who have already filed so no additional action will be needed by those eligible taxpayers.

Under current law, for tax year 2023, the following currently apply:

  • The enhanced credit allowed for qualifying children under age 6 and children under age 18 has expired. For 2023, the initial amount of the CTC is $2,000 for each qualifying child. The credit amount begins to phase out where AGI income exceeds $200,000 ($400,000 in the case of a joint return). The amount of the CTC that can be claimed as a refundable credit is limited as it was in 2020 except that the maximum ACTC amount for each qualifying child increased to $1,500.
  • The increased age allowance for a qualifying child has expired. A child must be under age 17 at the end of 2023 to be a qualifying child.

Changes to the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The enhancements for taxpayers without a qualifying child implemented by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 will not apply for tax year 2023. To claim the EITC without a qualifying child in 2023, taxpayers must be at least age 25 but under age 65 at the end of 2023. If a taxpayer is married filing a joint return, one spouse must be at least age 25 but under age 65 at the end of 2023.

Taxpayers may find more information on Child tax credits in the Instructions for Schedule 8812 (Form 1040) .

New Clean Vehicle Credit. The credit for new qualified plug-in electric drive motor vehicles has changed. This credit is now known as the Clean Vehicle Credit. The maximum amount of the credit and some of the requirements to claim the credit have changed. The credit is reported on Form 8936, Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit , and on Form 1040, Schedule 3.

More information on these and other credit and deduction changes for tax year 2023 may be found in the Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) , taxpayer guide.

1099-K reporting requirements have not changed for tax year 2023

Following feedback from taxpayers, tax professionals and payment processors, and to reduce taxpayer confusion, the IRS recently released Notice 2023-74 announcing a delay of the new $600 reporting threshold for tax year 2023 on Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions . The previous reporting thresholds will remain in place for 2023.

The IRS has published a fact sheet with further information to assist taxpayers concerning changes to 1099-K reporting requirements for tax year 2023.

Form 1099-K reporting requirements

Taxpayers who take direct payment by credit, debit or gift cards for selling goods or providing services by customers or clients should get a Form 1099-K from their payment processor or payment settlement entity no matter how many payments they got or how much they were for.

If they used a payment app or online marketplace and received over $20,000 from over 200 transactions,

the payment app or online marketplace is required to send a Form 1099-K. However, they can send a Form 1099-K with lower amounts. Whether or not the taxpayer receives a Form 1099-K, they must still report any income on their tax return.

What’s taxable? It’s the profit from these activities that’s taxable income. The Form 1099-K shows the gross or total amount of payments received. Taxpayers can use it and other records to figure out the actual taxes they owe on any profits. Remember that all income, no matter the amount, is taxable unless the tax law says it isn’t – even if taxpayers don’t get a Form 1099-K.

What’s not taxable? Taxpayers shouldn’t receive a Form 1099-K for personal payments, including money received as a gift and for repayment of shared expenses. That money isn’t taxable. To prevent getting an inaccurate Form 1099-K, note those payments as “personal,” if possible.

Good recordkeeping is key. Be sure to keep good records because it helps when it’s time to file a tax return. It’s a good idea to keep business and personal transactions separate to make it easier to figure out what a taxpayer owes.

For details on what to do if a taxpayer gets a Form 1099-K in error or the information on their form is incorrect, visit IRS.gov/1099k  or find frequently asked questions at Form 1099-K FAQs .

Direct File pilot program provides a new option this year for some

The IRS launched the Direct File pilot program during the 2024 tax season. The pilot will give eligible taxpayers an option to prepare and electronically file their 2023 tax returns, for free, directly with the IRS.

The Direct File pilot program will be offered to eligible taxpayers in 12 pilot states who have relatively simple tax returns reporting only certain types of income and claiming limited credits and deductions. The 12 states currently participating in the Direct File pilot program are Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington state and Wyoming. Taxpayers can check their eligibility at directfile.irs.gov .

The Direct File pilot is currently in the internal testing phase and will be more widely available in mid-March. Taxpayers can get the latest news about the pilot at Direct File pilot news and sign up to be notified when Direct File is open to new users.

Finally, for comprehensive information on all these and other changes for tax year 2023, taxpayers and tax professionals are encouraged to read the Publication 17, Your Federal Income Tax (For Individuals) , taxpayer guide, as well as visit other topics of taxpayer interest on IRS.gov.

Green Bay Packers 2024 NFL offseason primer: Franchise has found itself another QB worth building around

Green Bay Packers' 2023 season: 9-8, lost in divisional round

Overview: Midway through the season, the jury remained out on third-year quarterback Jordan Love. A 6-2 finished capped by a coming out party against the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs put any lingering concerns to rest. Love is the quarterback of the present and future in Green Bay, and general manager Brian Gutekunst is ready to talk long-term extension.

Love's surrounded by an impressive cadre of young receiving talent, leaving the Packers to look elsewhere this offseason to fill needs. Cap space is somewhat tight, and Green Bay will have to do some maneuvering to address those needs on the offensive line and in the defensive backfield. But the future looks bright.

Key free agents

RB A.J. Dillon

RG Jon Runyan Jr.

CB/return specialist Keisean Nixon

FS Darnell Savage

SS Jonathan Owens

Who's in/out: Savage and Nixon appear to be on their way out after the Packers declined to offer them extensions that would have saved them millions in cap space for the upcoming season. Dillon could be gone too as the Packers figure out their running back room (see more on Aaron Jones below). Runyan lost reps to second-year pro Sean Rhyan last season, a sign that he too may be on the way out.

Key free agent needs

Offensive line

Why the holes? If Savage is indeed done in Green Bay, safety becomes a top priority. With Owens also slated for free agency, the Packers could be without both starting safeties from last season. Likely movement at left tackle (again, see below) alongside Runyan's potential departure makes protecting Jordan Love another top priority, though the free-agent market is scarce. Nixon's potential exit creates a need for cornerback depth.

Do they have the money?

They have more than they thought, given the NFL's record rise in this year's cap . The Packers have $12.5 in cap space, per Spotrac . But the Packers may still end up with some tough decisions to make with some of their highly paid players.

Potential notable cuts

LT David Bakhtiari

RB Aaron Jones

LB Preston Smith

Why they might be gone: Bakhtiari, a five-time All-Pro, hasn't been the same or even available since tearing his ACL in 2020. He's played in just 13 games the last three seasons and carries a whopping $40 million cap hit in 2024. Jones proved his value in the postseason after injuries limited his regular season, but he carries a $17.6 million cap hit in 2024. A restructure is the more likely move here if Jones is amenable. Smith remained productive with eight sacks last season. But at 31, his $16.5 million cap hit in 2024 may prove too high.

Draft picks

1st round: No. 25

2nd round: No. 41 (from Jets)

2nd round: No. 58

3rd round: No. 88

3rd round: No. 91 (from Bills)

7th round

Good draft fit

Oklahoma OT Tyler Guyton

Why him? With Bakhtiari likely gone and free agent options at the position slim, left tackle becomes a top priority in the draft. Protecting Love is paramount, and Guyton has the size and athleticism to anchor the most important position on the line for years to come.

What can move the fantasy football needle this offseason?

Green Bay has apparently found another generational solution at quarterback, a horrifying development for fans of every other NFC North team. The Packers also brilliantly rebuilt their receiving corps over the past two drafts and now may have the deepest group of pass-catchers in the league. All we’re asking is for Aaron Jones to return (and remain healthy) while the team finds a young, dynamic backfield sidekick to replace free agent AJ Dillon. — Andy Behrens
