A good practice is to write your business plan to match the expectations of your audience. 

If you’re walking into a bank looking for a loan, your plan should match the formal, professional style that a loan officer would expect . But if you’re writing it for stakeholders on your own team—shorter and less formal (even just a few pages) could be the better way to go.

The length of your plan may also depend on the stage your business is in. 

For instance, a startup plan won’t have nearly as much financial information to include as a plan written for an established company will.

What information is included in a business plan?

The contents of a plan business plan will vary depending on the industry the business is in. 

After all, someone opening a new restaurant will have different customers, inventory needs, and marketing tactics to consider than someone bringing a new medical device to the market. 

But there are some common elements that most business plans include:

  • Executive summary: An overview of the business operation, strategy, and goals. The executive summary should be written last, despite being the first thing anyone will read.
  • Products and services: A description of the solution that a business is bringing to the market, emphasizing how it solves the problem customers are facing.
  • Market analysis: An examination of the demographic and psychographic attributes of likely customers, resulting in the profile of an ideal customer for the business.
  • Competitive analysis: Documenting the competitors a business will face in the market, and their strengths and weaknesses relative to those competitors.
  • Marketing and sales plan: Summarizing a business’s tactics to position their product or service favorably in the market, attract customers, and generate revenue.
  • Operational plan: Detailing the requirements to run the business day-to-day, including staffing, equipment, inventory, and facility needs.
  • Organization and management structure: A listing of the departments and position breakdown of the business, as well as descriptions of the backgrounds and qualifications of the leadership team.
  • Key milestones: Laying out the key dates that a business is projected to reach certain milestones , such as revenue, break-even, or customer acquisition goals.
  • Financial plan: Balance sheets, cash flow forecast , and sales and expense forecasts with forward-looking financial projections, listing assumptions and potential risks that could affect the accuracy of the plan.
  • Appendix: All of the supporting information that doesn’t fit into specific sections of the business plan, such as data and charts.

A business plan isn’t a one-size-fits-all document. There are numerous ways to create an effective business plan that fits entrepreneurs’ or established business owners’ needs. 

Here are a few of the most common types of business plans for small businesses:

  • One-page plan : Outlining all of the most important information about a business into an adaptable one-page plan.
  • Growth plan : An ongoing business management plan that ensures business tactics and strategies are aligned as a business scales up.

What is a business plan, and what’s the point of a business plan? To understand the benefits of a business plan, it is important to first understand why it's useful and how to create one.

In essence, a business plan describes a business in detail, including its goals and how it intends to achieve them. Business plans are typically written for new businesses, though they can be written for existing ones as well. The plan includes the operational, financial and marketing aspects of the venture.

The business plan is a fundamental tool and is necessary for a startup that needs a sense of direction. One of the reasons a business plan is so important is that it is one of the main requirements of venture capital firms and banks interested in investing funds in businesses. The business plan usually starts with an executive summary, followed by a description of the business in detail, including its products and services, and a section on how the business is going to achieve its goals from operational, financial and marketing standpoints. The business plan also typically includes a brief look at the industry within which the business will operate and how the business will differentiate itself from the competition.

What Are the Various Types of Business Plans?

There are many types of business plans. These include: feasibility plans, annual plans, internal plans, operations plans, growth plans and more. These different types of plans are drafted to match the different business situations. For example, if you’re preparing a business plan for internal reasons and not to seek funding from a financial institution, there is absolutely no need to include background information in your business plan. When you’re preparing a business plan for external investors, you should describe the management team; if you’re preparing the business plan for a bank, you should include the financial history and background of the company. With different circumstances, different pieces of information are included in the business plan.

Business Plans for Start-Ups

The business plan you prepare for a startup is about as standard as it gets when it comes to explaining all the steps that need to be taken by a new business to achieve its goals. These plans typically include information on the financial analysis of the business, the milestones for implementation, the management team, the strategy of the business, various forecasts, the marketplace and the product or service offering of the organization.

Notable among the plan's forecasts are predictions for the sales, profit, loss, cash flow and balance sheet of the company. There will also likely be additional tables included in the section on financial analysis, as well as the monthly projections for the first year. The plan for a startup usually begins with an abstract and contains an appendix at the end.

Internal Business Plans

Any business plan you do not prepare with the intent to show a financial institution, an external investor or any other third party is known as an internal business plan. In such plans, you don’t really need to describe in detail the organization or the management team. You may also choose whether or not to include financial projections like forecasts and budget. Usually, in internal business plans, the whole plan is written as a report using paragraph form. The main points will either be depicted as bullet points or as slides, in the case of a PowerPoint presentation.

Operational Business Plans

Operational business plans are typically prepared for use by the business itself, so they are strictly a type of internal business plan. They are also known as annual plans and include detailed information on deadlines, implementation milestones, specific dates, and the responsibilities of teams and their managers.

The operational business plan doesn’t go into much detail about who needs to do what and when. It looks at the responsibilities and dates from the perspective of what is a top priority and what is high level. It typically arranges data in the form of bullet points on slides in a presentation. There's no need for descriptions of the management teams or the organization. You also won’t find detailed explanations of all financial projections in these business plans. They are typically not regarded at all when the business plan is being used to formulate strategies going forward.

Growth Business Plans

Some business plans do not concern themselves with the entirety of the business. They are only interested in a part of the business or a specific area of interest. These are called growth plans, new product plans or expansion plans, depending on what they are looking to achieve. They may or may not be internal plans, depending whether they are meant to attract outside investment or meet the loan requirements of a bank. For example, you could prepare a startup plan to attract new investment when the business is just starting out. When you need to attract new funding or some kind of debt finance, you would prepare an expansion plan. Both plans should include a detailed description of the organization as well as extensive background data on each member of the management team. If, however, the expansion plan is for the business’s own internal consumption, it will be categorized as an internal business plan and won’t contain details about the organizations or the management team. Internal expansion and growth plans are used to strategize on the steps the business needs to take to expand and grow. Such internal plans also involve internal funding provided by the business itself. There may or may not be detailed financial projections. However, the projections of the sales and costs of any expansion plans are typically laid out in detail.

The bigger picture: This is one of the key advantages of a business plan. When you plan your business right, you can get a clearer picture of the business as a whole. You can easily comnect the dots between strategy and tactics, and everything is easier to work out.

Strategic focus: As a startup, you need to create an identity and focus on building that identity. It is usually defined by your target market, and the products and services you are tailoring to match their needs.

Set priorities: It’s impossible to do everything at once in a business. When you plan your business, you can order things in terms of their importance and allocate your effort, resources and time in an efficient and strategic manner.

Manage change: When you plan your business effectively, you can check your assumptions, track your progress and see new developments right from the beginning, allowing you to adjust accordingly.

Forces you to be accountable: When you plan effectively, you set expectations for yourself and a means by which you will be able to track your results. You can constantly review your business plan in terms of what you expect and what eventually happens.

I have noticed that while a business plan may not be required for a venture to become successful, having one does seem to greatly improve the probability of successful outcomes.

Expert opinions support the four following conclusions:

Individuals Who Write Business Plans Are 2.5x More Likely to Become Entrepreneurs

Many people have business ideas over the course of their careers, but often, these ideas never come to fruition, or they get lost amidst our daily obligations. Interestingly, studies support the notion that those who write business plans are far more likely to launch their companies. Data from the Panal Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics in fact suggests that business planners were 2.5x as likely to get into business . The study, which surveyed more than 800 people across the United States who were in the process of starting businesses, therefore concluded that “writing a plan greatly increased the chances that a person would actually go into business.”

Of course, causation of this phenomenon is hard to pin down. There are several different possible reasons why this correlation between writing business plans and actually starting a business may exist. But William Gartner, Clemson University Entrepreneurship Professor and author of the Panal Study, believes that “‘research shows that business plans are all about walking the walk. People who write business plans also do more stuff.’ And doing more stuff, such as researching markets and preparing projections, increases the chances an entrepreneur will follow through.”

William Bygrave, a professor emeritus at Babson College, reached a similar conclusion despite having previously shown “that entrepreneurs who began with formal plans had no greater success than those who started without them.” Bygrave does admit, however, that “40% of Babson students who have taken the college’s business plan writing course go on to start businesses after graduation, twice the rate of those who didn’t study plan writing.”

Business Planning Improves Corporate Executive Satisfaction

Another important way in which business plans can provide tangible help is by aligning everyone in an organization with the vision and strategy going forward. And this, in turn, has important ramifications on corporate executive satisfaction. A study by McKinsey & Company which surveyed nearly 800 corporate executives across a range of industries confirms this conclusion. In it, McKinsey found that “formal strategic-planning processes play an important role in improving overall satisfaction with strategy development. That role can be seen in the responses of the 79 percent of managers who claimed that the formal planning process played a significant role in developing strategies and were satisfied with the approach of their companies, compared with only 21 percent of the respondents who felt that the process did not play a significant role. Looked at another way, 51% of the respondents whose companies had no formal process were dissatisfied with their approach to the development of strategy, against only 20% of those at companies with a formal process.”

Of course, not all planning is equal. Planning just for the sake of planning doesn’t have the desired effects. As McKinsey itself noted in their study, “Just 45% of the respondents said they were satisfied with the strategic planning process. Moreover, only 23% indicated that major strategic decisions were made within its confines. Given these results, managers might well be tempted to jettison the planning process altogether.” As such, entrepreneurs and business managers should take the time and effort required to put together a well-written and well-researched business plan. Later in the article, I outline some of the elements of a well-written plan.

Business Plans and Their Financial Models Are Valuable to Angels and Venture Capitalists

Many entrepreneurs will eventually need to raise outside capital to grow and develop their businesses. In my experience, a business plan is a crucial tool in maximizing the chances of raising money from external investors. A well-written plan not only helps investors understand your business and your vision, but also shows them that you’ve taken the time to carefully assess and think through the issues your business will face, as well as the more detailed questions surrounding the economics and fundamentals of your business model.

Nathan Beckford, CFA, is the CEO of FounderSuite, the funding stack used by startups in Y Combinator, TechStars, 500s, and more to raise over $750 million. Nathan illustrates the above point nicely in an email he wrote to me recently: “Prior to starting Foundersuite.com, I ran a startup consulting business called VentureArchetypes.com. For the first few years, our primary business was cranking out bold, bullish, beautifully-written business plans for startups to present to investors. Around the mid-2000s, business plans started to go out of favor as the ‘Lean Startup’ methodology became popular. Instead of a written plan, we saw a huge uptick in demand for detailed financial models. Bottom line, I still see value in taking time to be contemplative and strategic before launching a startup. Does that need to be in the form of a 40-page written document? No. But if that’s the format that best works for you, and it can help you model scenarios and ‘see around the corner’ then that’s valuable.”

Nathan and I have frequently interacted, as I maintain a subscription to FounderSuite, software I use when running capital campaigns for early-stage companies on whose boards I sit, or when raising capital for my own firm’s investment projects. Nathan’s feedback is helpful, as he frequently interacts with thousands of entrepreneurs simultaneously running capital campaigns, providing him with a great perspective on which approaches work and which don’t. Clearly, he sees that financial models and business plans in some form help entrepreneurs raise capital.

Companies Who Complete Business Plans Are 2.5x as Likely to Get Funded

Following the section above, naturally, if business plans are useful to outside investors, these are therefore likely to also increase one’s chances of successfully raising capital. A study by Palo Alto Software confirms this hypothesis. The study showed that although 65% of entrepreneurs had NOT completed business plans, the ones who had were twice as likely to have secured funding for their businesses.

This study surveyed 2,877 entrepreneurs. Of those, 995 had completed business plans, with 297 of them (30%) having secured loans, 280 of them (28%) having secured investment capital, and 499 of them (50%) having grown their businesses. Contrast these percentages with the results for the 1,882 entrepreneurs who had not completed business plans, where just 222 of them (12%) had secured loans, 219 of them (12%) had secured investment capital, and 501 of them (27%) had grown their businesses. (Note that the percentages among the business plan population sum to over 100% because of some overlap between each of the sub-categories.) These results led the study authors to conclude that “Except in a small number of cases, business planning appeared to be positively correlated with business success as measured by our variables. While our analysis cannot say that completing a business plan will lead to success, it does indicate that the type of entrepreneur who completes a business plan is also more likely to run a successful business.”

Calculating the Return on Investment for Business Planning

The data and studies outlined above all serve to prove something that I have come to understand very clearly throughout my career. Nevertheless, I still often find that startups struggle with the idea of having to put together a business plan, and in particular with the option of hiring an outside professional to help them do that. As such, I quantified the ROI of such an activity, using data and numbers based on my many years of business consulting. The results of the exercise are summarized in the table at the end of the section, but there are two overarching conclusions:

  • Even a small-scale early-stage company can “afford” to pay a finance expert $191 per hour both to create a business plan and to guide the capital raising process, at worst “breaking even” on the investment.
  • Larger early-stage companies can expect significant returns on investments in business planning, perhaps as much as 6,700% (67x the amount of money invested).

Diving into the analysis, my inputs included:

  • My professional experience with writing business plans. I have spent 25 - 200 hours apiece creating business plans I feel comfortable sharing with founders, advisors, and investors.
  • Data from the Palo Alto study discussed earlier in this article. This study showed that 30% of early-stage ventures with business plans had secured funding, 2.5x as great as the 12% of early-stage ventures without business plans who managed to secure funding despite the absence of such plans.
  • The hourly rate for a finance expert x (150 to 200 hours) for one round of financing, OR
  • 10% of the amount of capital targeted

My analysis illustrates the following:

  • Early-stage companies should expect to spend $4,000 - $40,000 on business planning, including the financial modeling associated with it.
  • Early-stage companies should expect to spend $30,000 - $200,000 for an initial round of financing between $250,000 and $2 million in size, resulting in net financing of $200,000 - $1.8 million.
  • Even if a small-scale early-stage venture seeking just $250,000 in capital spent almost $40,000 on business planning and another almost $40,000 on capital raising, it should still expect to “break even” on a probability-weighted basis. In other words, because the odds of success with a professional business plan are 2.5x greater than without one, small-scale early-stage ventures can justify such a significant investment. This also assumes NO additional odds for success from engaging a professional to coordinate the fundraising effort. I suspect that doing so may push the odds of success from 12% without a business plan and 30% with a business plan to above 50%. It is also likely that a smaller-scale venture may require significantly fewer hours for business planning and capital raising that what is outlined in the “worst case” below.
  • Larger early-stage ventures enjoy extraordinary probability-weighted returns on investment from business planning. Because the target net capital so greatly exceeds the money spent on business planning, the prospective ROI is huge, and this analysis just assumes ONE round of equity financing. Most successful startups will experience several rounds of financing.

Thoughts on Writing an Excellent Business Plan

An extensive overview of how to write an excellent business plan is beyond the scope of this article. However, here are two key thoughts that have emerged from my years of experience with startups.

First, there are four common elements to an excellent business plan. In Alan Hall’s Forbes article, “ How to Build a Billion Dollar Business Plan: 10 Top Points ,” he interviews Thomas Harrison, Chairman of Diversified Agency Services, an Omnicom division that has purchased “a vast number of firms,” to share his views on the key elements of a great business plan. Although each of these ten elements is essential, I reorganized the list into four broad categories:

1. Company Overview

  • An explanation of why your company is relevant and the need are you addressing
  • A description of corporate priorities and the processes to achieve them.
  • An overview of the various resources, including the people that will be needed, to deliver what’s expected by the customer.

2. Market Overview

  • A description of the state of your market and its important trends.
  • A detailed description of your customers.
  • A description of your current competitors and their advantages. Which ones will you displace?

3. Product/Service Overview

  • A description of your products, how they compete with other brands, and why they are needed.
  • An explanation of why customers will pay a fair economic value for your product or service. This element is conspicuously absent from some of today’s most expensive unicorns. Companies such as Uber and Tesla are losing massive amounts of money on rapidly growing sales because these companies may not be selling their services/products for fair economic value. Of course, sales grow rapidly when customers can buy your services/products for far less than their fair economic values!

4. Financial Projections

  • Conservative
  • Each scenario should have realistic and achievable sales, margins, expenses, and profits on monthly, quarterly, and annual bases. Again, these elements appear to be conspicuously absent from some of today’s most expensive unicorns.

Second, written business plans are superior to those just “outlined.” As an adjunct professor of finance for Villanova University, I require my students to write research reports prior to developing slide decks to present their findings from a full semester of industry research. The process of writing forces the authors to ask themselves how they reached their conclusions and each of the sub-conclusions along the way because they must explain their logic to cynical readers. The written authors need to support their conclusions with facts and logic to prove that they are not “making it up” or relying upon popular “myths.” Outlined reports and outlined business plans are not generally subject to the same level of reader scrutiny. Therefore, written business plans are superior to those just “outlined.” Outlined plans are often kept on 10-12 slide decks, and the slide deck is an important tool in the capital raising process, but the written business plan that stands behind it will differentiate an entrepreneur from their seemingly infinite competition.

Parting Thoughts

Some argue that many public multi-billion-dollar companies such as Apple or Google never had formal business plans before they started, but this argument is flawed because most of these companies likely developed business plans either during the solicitation of venture capital or during the process of going public. Apple and Google were both funded with venture capital, and soliciting venture capital involves business planning. The founders of Apple and Google likely created financial projections and outlined strategic paths.

Moreover, Apple and Google are both public companies, and going public involves business planning. Underwriters employ research analysts creating financial forecasts based on business plans projected by management at the companies going public. Buy-side firms purchasing and holding shares in newly public companies create forecasts based upon the business plans projected by public company management teams.

Admittedly, you don’t need a written business plan to have a successful company. You may not even need a business plan at all to have a successful company. However, the probability of success without a business plan is much lower. Angels and venture capitalists like to know about your business plan, and public companies need to project business plans to persuade underwriters and investors to purchase their securities.

And I’d like to point out that none of these benefits require a big formal business plan document. A lean business plan (as in What Business Plan Type is Best for Me) is usually enough. It takes an hour or two to do the first plan, then just an hour or two to review and revise monthly.

Here are those top ten benefits.

  • See the whole business . Business planning done right connects the dots in your business so you get a better picture of the whole. Strategy is supposed to relate to tactics with strategic alignment. Does that show up in your plan? Do your sales connect to your sales and marketing expenses? Are your products right for your target market? Are you covering costs including long-term fixed costs, product development, and working capital needs as well? Take a step back and look at the larger picture.
  • Strategic Focus . Startups and small business need to focus on their special identities, their target markets, and their products or services tailored to match.
  • Set priorities . You can’t do everything. Business planning helps you keep track of the right things, and the most important things. Allocate your time, effort, and resources strategically.
  • Manage change . With good planning process you regularly review assumptions, track progress, and catch new developments so you can adjust. Plan vs. actual analysis is a dashboard, and adjusting the plan is steering.
  • Develop accountability . Good planning process sets expectations and tracks results. It’s a tool for regular review of what’s expected and what happened. Good work shows up. Disappointments show up too. A well-run monthly plan review with plan vs. actual included becomes an impromptu review of tasks and accomplishments.
  • Manage cash . Good business planning connects the dots in cash flow. Sometimes just watching profits is enough. But when sales on account, physical products, purchasing assets, or repaying debts are involved, cash flow takes planning and management. Profitable businesses suffer when slow-paying clients or too much inventory constipate cash flow. A plan helps you see the problem and adjust to it.
  • Strategic alignment . Does your day-to-day work fit with your main business tactics? Do those tactics match your strategy? If so, you have strategic alignment. If not, the business planning will bring up the hidden mismatches. For example, if you run a gourmet restaurant that has a drive-through window, you’re out of alignment.
  • Milestones . Good business planning sets milestones you can work towards. These are key goals you want to achieve, like reaching a defined sales level, hiring that sales manager, or opening the new location. We’re human. We work better when we have visible goals we can work towards.
  • Metrics . Put your performance indicators and numbers to track into a business plan where you can see them monthly in the plan review meeting. Figure out the numbers that matter. Sales and expenses usually do, but there are also calls, trips, seminars, web traffic, conversion rates, returns, and so forth. Use your business planning to define and track the key metrics.
  • Realistic regular reminders to keep on track . We all want to do everything for our customers, but sometimes we need to push back to maintain quality and strategic focus. It’s hard, during the heat of the everyday routine, to remember the priorities and focus. The business planning process becomes a regular reminder.

Very good summary. I think one great benefit of developing/using Business Plans is that it will give you the chance of training your mindset and exercise the forrest-tree approach. One of the key elements of the BP is to drill down from the overall defined strategy, down to the critical success factors and define metrics to achieve them. As you gain experience, this way of thinking will become more and more embedded and I honestly believe it will help you be a more analytical person i.e. be able to better build BP’s. That is obviously my opinion, some people might argue.

What Is Strategic Planning?

Strategic planning is the ongoing organizational process of using available knowledge to document a business's intended direction. It’s important to highlight that strategic planning is an ongoing process—not a one-time meeting. In the online course Disruptive Strategy , Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen notes that in a study of HBS graduates who started businesses, 93 percent of those with successful strategies evolved and pivoted away from their original strategic plans.

“Most people think of strategy as an event, but that’s not the way the world works,” Christensen says. “When we run into unanticipated opportunities and threats, we have to respond. Sometimes we respond successfully; sometimes we don’t. But most strategies develop through this process. More often than not, the strategy that leads to success emerges through a process that’s at work 24/7 in almost every industry.”

Strategic planning requires time, effort, and continual reassessment. Given the proper attention, it can set your business on the right track. Here are three benefits of strategic planning.

Benefits of Strategic Planning

1. create one, forward-focused vision.

Strategy touches every employee and serves as an actionable way to reach your company’s goals.

One significant benefit of strategic planning is that it creates a single, forward-focused vision that can align your company and its shareholders. By making everyone aware of your company’s goals, how and why those goals were chosen, and what they can do to help reach them, you can create an increased sense of responsibility throughout your organization.

This can also have trickle-down effects. For instance, if a manager isn’t clear on your organization’s strategy or the reasoning used to craft it, they could make decisions on a team level that counteract its efforts. 2. Draw Attention to Biases and Flaws in Reasoning

The decisions you make come with inherent bias. Taking part in the strategic planning process forces you to examine and explain why you’re making each decision and back it up with data, projections, or case studies, thus combatting your cognitive biases.

A few examples of cognitive biases are:

  • The recency effect: The tendency to select the option presented most recently because it’s fresh in your mind
  • Occam’s razor bias: The tendency to assume the most obvious decision to be the best decision
  • Inertia bias: The tendency to select options that allow you to think, feel, and act in familiar ways

One cognitive bias that may be more difficult to catch in the act is confirmation bias . When seeking to validate a particular viewpoint, it's the tendency to only pay attention to information that supports that viewpoint.

If you’re crafting a strategic plan for your organization and know which strategy you prefer, enlist others with differing views and opinions to help look for information that either proves or disproves the idea.

Combating biases in strategic decision-making requires effort and dedication from your entire team, and it can make your organization’s strategy that much stronger.

3. Track Progress Based on Strategic Goals

Having a strategic plan in place can enable you to track progress toward goals. When each department and team understands your company’s larger strategy, their progress can directly impact its success, creating a top-down approach to tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) .

By planning your company’s strategy and defining its goals, KPIs can be determined at the organizational level. These goals can then be extended to business units, departments, teams, and individuals. This ensures that every level of your organization is aligned and can positively impact your business’s KPIs and performance.

It’s important to remember that even though your strategy might be far-reaching and structured, it must remain agile. As Christensen asserts in Disruptive Strategy , a business’s strategy needs to evolve with the challenges and opportunities it encounters. While making a plan takes creativity after that managers blindly follow the plan. They do not change the plan according to the dynamic nature of the business. Sometimes they do not even make the appropriate suggestions to upper management. The work becomes routine.

4] Planning is Expensive

The European Union produces more than 2.2 billion tonnes of waste every year . It is currently updating its legislation on waste management to promote a shift to a more sustainable model known as the circular economy.

But what exactly does the circular economy mean? And what would be the benefits?

What is the circular economy?

The circular economy is a model of production and consumption , which involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing and recycling existing materials and products as long as possible. In this way, the life cycle of products is extended.

In practice, it implies reducing waste to a minimum. When a product reaches the end of its life, its materials are kept within the economy wherever possible thanks to recycling. These can be productively used again and again, thereby creating further value .

This is a departure from the traditional, linear economic model, which is based on a take-make-consume-throw away pattern. This model relies on large quantities of cheap, easily accessible materials and energy.

Also part of this model is planned obsolescence , when a product has been designed to have a limited lifespan to encourage consumers to buy it again. The European Parliament has called for measures to tackle this practice.

Benefits: why do we need to switch to a circular economy?

To protect the environment.

Reusing and recycling products would slow down the use of natural resources, reduce landscape and habitat disruption and help to limit biodiversity loss .

Another benefit from the circular economy is a reduction in total annual greenhouse gas emissions . According to the European Environment Agency, industrial processes and product use are responsible for 9.10% of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU, while the management of waste accounts for 3.32%.

Creating more efficient and sustainable products from the start would help to reduce energy and resource consumption, as it is estimated that more than 80% of a product's environmental impact is determined during the design phase.

A shift to more reliable products that can be reused, upgraded and repaired would reduce the amount of waste. Packaging is a growing issue and, on average, the average European generates nearly 180 kilos of packaging waste per year . The aim is to tackle excessive packaging and improve its design to promote reuse and recycling.

Reduce raw material dependence

The world's population is growing and with it the demand for raw materials. However, the supply of crucial raw materials is limited.

Finite supplies also means some EU countries are dependent on other countries for their raw materials. According to Eurostat , the EU imports about half of the raw materials it consumes.

The total value of trade (import plus exports) of raw materials between the EU and the rest of the world has almost tripled since 2002, with exports growing faster than imports. Regardless, the EU still imports more than it exports. In 2021, this resulted in a trade deficit of €35.5 billion.

Recycling raw materials mitigates the risks associated with supply, such as price volatility, availability and import dependency.

This especially applies to critical raw materials , needed for the production of technologies that are crucial for achieving climate goals, such as batteries and electric engines.

Create jobs and save consumers money

Moving towards a more circular economy could increase competitiveness, stimulate innovation, boost economic growth and create jobs ( 700,000 jobs in the EU alone by 2030 ).

Redesigning materials and products for circular use would also boost innovation across different sectors of the economy.

Consumers will be provided with more durable and innovative products that will increase the quality of life and save them money in the long term.

What is the EU doing to become a circular economy?

  In March 2020, the European Commission presented the circular economy action plan,  which aims to promote more sustainable product design, reduce waste and empower consumers, for example by creating a right to repair ). There is a focus on resource intensive sectors, such as electronics and ICT , plastics , textiles and construction.

In February 2021, the Parliament adopted a resolution on the new circular economy action plan demanding additional measures to achieve a carbon-neutral, environmentally sustainable, toxic-free and fully circular economy by 2050, including tighter recycling rules and binding targets for materials use and consumption by 2030. In March 2022, the Commission released the first package of measures to speed up the transition towards a circular economy, as part of the circular economy action plan. The proposals include boosting sustainable products, empowering consumers for the green transition, reviewing construction product regulation, and creating a strategy on sustainable textiles.

In November 2022, the Commission proposed new EU-wide rules on packaging . It aims to reduce packaging waste and improve packaging design, with for example clear labelling to promote reuse and recycling; and calls for a transition to bio-based, biodegradable and compostable plastics.

Your employees are the foundation of your company. They can make or break your success, which is why having an employee assistance program (EAP) that helps workers who are struggling with certain personal issues is good business. However, before you add an EAP to your employee benefits package , it’s important to understand what it entails, its advantages and how to properly implement one at your organization.

What is an employee assistance program (EAP)?

An EAP, as defined by the Society for Human Resource Management, is “a work-based intervention program designed to assist employees in resolving personal problems that may be adversely affecting the employee’s performance.” Notably, these programs are often open to not just employees but also other members of their households.

These are some of the common areas for which an EAP can support employees and their families:

  • Stress management: Work and finances are some of the top causes of employee stress. Stress management counseling can provide your team members with resources and techniques to cope with stress and minimize its consequences. [Find out how stress affects productivity .]
  • Domestic violence: Domestic violence resources can include counseling, legal advice and intervention.
  • Grief: Grief can be devastating to anyone. Having to work in the midst of it is often difficult. Grief counseling is one of the most reliable ways to help people through a hard time.
  • Alcoholism: Alcoholism has to be treated carefully and effectively, and EAPs are often better suited for guiding people to proper help than rendering it directly.
  • Crisis management: Crises happen, often out of the blue. Examples of crises include the loss of a house in a natural disaster, a devastating health diagnosis and other unexpected problems. Crisis management helps employees focus on what they can control and keeps them organized as they deal with the issue. Crisis management resources can help your team members get back on their feet more quickly and effectively.
  • Psychological (mental health) disorders: There are many health disorders that are not disabling. While they introduce challenges to a person’s life, many can be managed. An EAP can typically identify problems and refer workers to the right experts to get the specialized help they need.
  • Substance abuse: Substance abuse issues are managed much like alcoholism. When a problem is identified, EAP resources can help get the affected staffer to a qualified professional or into a program that has a good chance of providing long-term help.
  • Health and caregiving: Health and caregiving experts provide advice for employees who are in a situation that requires them to provide immediate care to another. This training can prepare the person to care for an elderly family member or someone with disabilities.
  • Family services: Family services center around child care and family planning. EAPs can offer advice for organizing resources, time and ideas to foster a better home situation. These services can include assistance in finding and financing expert child care, planning family or medical leave, and budgeting for a growing family.
  • Counseling needs: EAPs are limited programs. Ultimately, they’re best for directing employees toward long-term solutions. For many issues under the purview of an EAP, counseling referrals are the long-term solution with the best prospect for providing meaningful aid.

As EAPs have continued to evolve, some employers offer extended coverage that may include support for financial challenges, family issues, workplace violence, elder care and child care issues. This assistance is available to eligible employees and their family members.

Michael Roche, co-founder and head of recruitment at Educating Abroad, has more than 10 years of recruitment and HR management experience, including in managing and implementing new initiatives. He said an EAP can provide a wide range of assistance types to your employees, including discount vouchers for counseling and support for those affected by alcoholism and substance abuse.

“It is advisable to identify what is actually important to your employees rather than just guessing,” Roche said. “You will find a lot more uptake in the benefit, which should result in improved productivity or morale within the business — the main goals of an EAP.”

One reason EAPs are popular is because they benefit both employees and employers. Healthy and happy employees are more productive and engaged in both their company and individual jobs, which is great for a business’s bottom line. Here are some of the top ways an EAP can benefit your organization:

  • It increases business productivity . It’s in employers’ best interests to have employees who are mentally and physically healthy. When employees are healthy, they have more opportunities to be engaged with their work, and engaged employees tend to have better work performance.

  • It reduces employee absenteeism. Highly engaged business units that take advantage of EAPs tend to see a reduction in employee absenteeism . When employees are healthy and have easy access to resources that improve their well-being, they take fewer sick days. They also may be more likely to arrive at work on time, since they won’t be delayed by physical or mental blocks.  
  • It boosts employee retention. EAPs support your employees’ health and well-being so they can focus on work, which, in turn, can improve employee engagement and job satisfaction and thus boost your employee retention rates. Maintaining a high retention rate is crucial to your bottom line, as the cost of replacing an individual staff member can range from one-half to two times the employee’s annual salary.

  • It improves employee safety. According to the S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , private industry employers reported 2.8 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses in 2022, up 7.5 percent from 2021. Over the 2021-2022 period, there were 2.2 million cases involving days away, adding up to millions of hours of lost productivity. Injuries result from a variety of factors, such as repetitive stress and accidents. Although you can’t prevent every ailment or incident, an EAP can help ensure your employees are taking care of their physical and mental health, putting them in the best position to be safe and careful at work.
  • It saves you time and money. When employee safety goes up, the number of workplace injuries and illnesses goes down. EAPs can help reduce the number of disability claims, labor disputes, health insurance claims and workers’ compensation claims your business faces. This can save you a lot of time and money that you would otherwise be spending on these issues.
  • It aids employees personally and professionally. Even if a problem isn’t directly related to an employee’s job, they and their family members can still receive valuable support from an EAP. EAPs give employees convenient access to a 24/7 hotline and direct access to experts who can provide help for domestic and financial matters. With this support for personal issues, employees who have EAPs in their benefits packages are likely to trust that their employers care about them and their well-being both inside and outside the workplace, which can engender loyalty.

How does an EAP work, and what does it offer?

An EAP is set up by the employer (and possibly an external vendor, if the program is outsourced; see below) and is free for employees to use. While they can take advantage of the benefit if they like, participation in an EAP can’t be mandated by employers and is entirely voluntary. Employers do, however, pay for these programs, and staff usage is highly encouraged. The business cost of an EAP varies, but it typically ranges from $10 to $100 per employee per year.

When an employee or their family needs to use the EAP’s services, they simply contact their company’s in-house EAP team or the external provider via the information provided by their organization’s HR team. An EAP specialist will assess their needs and then direct them to the best resource. Employees should rest assured that the information they share will remain confidential. Employers are not privy to data on which employees use the program or how often they do so. They can receive reports showing that the program is being used, but they won’t know who is doing so.

Requirements for an EAP

When offering an EAP to your employees, you should follow these requirements:

  • Written confidentiality policies: To ensure the use of the program remains confidential for all employees, employers must create and implement a written confidentiality policy.
  • Employee training: Company leaders and HR employees need to be trained on the program’s policies, including the formal procedures for monitoring the program and following up with employees who request assistance. Training also needs to include how employers and managers can recognize issues so they can appropriately direct employees to the EAP. As services and employee needs evolve, it’s essential to ensure that staffers update their skills pertaining to the EAP.
  • Scope and limitations of services policy: It’s recommended that every company offering an EAP have a written policy that covers the program’s relationship to the organization and the scope and limitations of the services. This policy aims to get all parties on the same page as to how the program works and how it should be used.
  • Advisory process: The advisory process ensures the employer and key staff are represented. The advisory board should reflect the diversity of your employee base as much as possible.  
  • Flexibility: As employees’ needs change, the EAP should be able to accommodate them by adding relevant services.
  • 24/7 crisis intervention services: One of the benefits of an EAP is that employees can access it 24/7, so employers need to make sure that this service is in place and that team members know how to use it.
  • Short-term problem resolution procedures: There may be situations in which employees need resolutions to short-term problems. The EAP needs to have protocols dictating resolution procedures, including when an employee must be referred to a resource outside the EAP.
  • Account management: For internal programs, a qualified staff member needs to be assigned to manage the program. This designated staffer must be trained accordingly and respond to employee needs.
  • Legal and regulatory compliance: Because a standard service offering of an EAP is mental health support, employers must adhere to legal and regulatory compliance regarding healthcare. It’s also good practice for employers to understand other legal considerations involved with offering and maintaining an EAP to ensure they adhere to all compliance protocols.

When handling situations and initiatives that require legal considerations, it can be beneficial to hire and consult an attorney to ensure compliance.

  • Policy development: You must establish a policy that outlines the program’s intention ​​— for example, it provides confidential and voluntary assistance to employees and their families. Think of this policy as a mission statement for the EAP.
  • Services that cater to all applicable languages and cultures: The services an EAP provides can’t have a language barrier or discriminate against cultures. Services must be sensitive to each employee’s language and culture. Along with these services, any materials you use to promote the EAP should be understandable to all employees.
  • Different ways to access services: While phone counseling tends to be the most popular option, it should not be the only way services are provided.
  • Custom data reporting: These reports offer employers important information about the program, such as if any employees threatened to harm themselves or someone else and how many employees are using the program. Customized data reporting can also track patterns and trends in usage. The data on the reports remains confidential and cannot be traced back to any specific employee. [Learn about HR reporting .]

How to offer an EAP to employees

There are three main ways to offer an employee assistance program: in-house, outsourced or blended. For smaller companies that don’t have the resources to host an EAP in-house, outsourcing is recommended.

In-house EAP

Like its name suggests, an in-house EAP means qualified employees at your company manage the program and offer its services on-site. It’s the job of an in-house EAP professional to provide employees with direct services or referral resources.

An in-house program can feel intimidating to employees who may be embarrassed to ask for help, worry that their information will not be kept confidential and feel uncomfortable seeing these co-workers around the office. As a result, in-house services often don’t get as much use as external programs do.

Outsourced EAP

Employees can access an external EAP by calling a toll-free phone number connected to your chosen EAP vendor. An EAP specialist answers calls and asks employees a few questions to verify their employer and location, and then finds out what the employee needs support for so the specialist can recommend the best resources.

Blended EAP

Through a blended program, employees have the option to seek assistance in-house or via the third-party provider. A blended program is not recommended for small businesses with limited resources.

How an EAP is implemented

According to Roche, these are the main steps for implementing an EAP:

  • Determine your budget. Identify and confirm the budget for the new program. Figure this out by calculating and totaling the per-employee fee to better understand how much you may need to spend versus what you are prepared to spend.
  • Identify your needs. Figure out which services your employees would benefit from.
  • Choose a provider. If you’re outsourcing, choose an EAP provider. As you consider different vendors, make sure to check their service-level agreements, as these vary considerably. Also, ask fellow business owners and HR professionals who use EAPs which providers have been good for them. Alternatively, hire a specialist to run your EAP in-house.
  • Promote it. Use the time between choosing your EAP provider and launching the program to announce and promote this new benefit to employees.
  • Train staff. Ensure that key HR personnel, company managers and department heads have been trained on how the program works so it runs smoothly when unveiled.
  • Launch it. Consider launching the new benefit at a special event, such as a company gala, team retreat or end-of-year party.
  • Maintain it. Periodically review your EAP and how employees are using it. Solicit feedback from team members.

“You could use the fact-finding part of what your employees want from such a service as the start of the promotion of the new employee benefit [that] is soon to become available,” Roche said. “Think of it like the release of a new mobile phone when they tease features before a launch.”

Ways to promote an EAP

No one benefits from an EAP if your employees don’t know about it. While top HR software providers offer these programs, it’s your job to ensure your team members are taking advantage of it. In addition to launching the program at a company event as Roche suggested, here are some other ways to promote this benefit:

  • Hang up posters around the office, especially in the break room.
  • Post information on your company’s intranet.
  • Send company-wide emails.
  • Mail postcards to employees’ families.
  • Make an announcement at quarterly employee meetings.
  • Write about it in employee newsletters.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Georgia Lord, a 27-year-old certified financial planner and HENRY in New York City. It has been edited for length and clarity.

I studied finance and started my career in Brisbane, Australia.

When I was 22, I moved to New York to join Morningstar in the credit ratings division. I pivoted to financial planning for a Canadian Fintech called Wealthsimple a year later.

I discovered that I love financial planning and working one-on-one with clients. Last year, I got my certified financial planning license .

I now make a comfortable living, but I consider myself a HENRY and have a way to go before I hit my goals.

I make 6 figures but don't feel wealthy

I earn a base salary of $125,000 and manage to live in New York City by being frugal. I love a bargain or a sale. I save for certain things I want, and I'm good at it because it's my job. I'd feel like a hypocrite if I didn't do what I told others to do.

I save on my Broadway tickets by entering into the lottery. I splurge on some things — I spend around $600 monthly on dining out. I also travel a lot, so I automate a certain amount of money every month for travel.

I lived with roommates for four years, and I've lived with my boyfriend for the last year. We split the rent more favorably to me since he makes quite a lot more, so I contribute $1,500 per month. That's also been helpful for managing my finances.

I have a few financial goals

One of my financial goals is to save up for the professional designations available in my field since they can be expensive.

I want to retire early , and I want to keep prioritizing saving for travel and visiting my home in Australia, which is not cheap.

I'm also saving for a wedding and improving cash flow to move into a larger apartment.

To reach my savings goals, I automate at least 20% of my paycheck every two weeks and deposit it in a high-yield savings account . I use Wealthfront but also like Ally, CapitalOne360, and Betterment. I preach that to all of my clients who are HENRYs : Automate your savings for big goals.

There's not a number in mind that I'm looking to reach to feel rich, but I will feel successful if I can achieve my goals without sacrificing my lifestyle in the process. Being in a great financial position today and in the future is what I consider rich.

I see HENRYs making one big mistake

Because the market did well in 2023 , I've noticed HENRYs (both in my personal life and those I see as clients) wanting to throw money into it without thinking about how they will fund other goals, like a down payment for a house.

Not only is it harder to access funds once they're invested, but there can also be financial benefits to other strategies. For example, some stock market returns might've been 3% last year, but some high-yield savings accounts have a return of 4.5%.

I still invest in the market, but I do so strategically. I have a 401(k) , Roth IRA , Traditional IRA , brokerage account with Betterment, and a brokerage account in Australia. I mostly invest in ETFs — I'm not a stock picker and love the diversity that ETFs provide.

It can be difficult to figure out how to divide your money and where to put it, so I recommend HENRYs work with a financial planner . We're not just for the rich — I've worked with clients in many different financial situations, and all can benefit.

Even if you're not ready for a financial planner, take the time to think through what your goals are and what you want to spend your money on. That's just as important as putting $100 into the stock market every week.
