Municipal solid waste management has emerged as one of the greatest challenges facing environmental protection agencies in developing countries. This study presents the current solid waste management practices and problems in Nigeria. Solid waste management is characterized by inefficient collection methods, insufficient coverage of the collection system and improper disposal. The waste density ranged from 280 to 370 kg/m 3 and the waste generation rates ranged from 0.44 to 0.66 kg/capita/day. The common constraints faced environmental agencies include lack of institutional arrangement, insufficient financial resources, absence of bylaws and standards, inflexible work schedules, insufficient information on quantity and composition of waste, and inappropriate technology. The study suggested study of institutional, political, social, financial, economic and technical aspects of municipal solid waste management in order to achieve sustainable and effective solid waste management in Nig...

The rapid and constant growth of urban population has led to a crucial socio-economic and environmental impact in solid waste management practices. This study focused on identifying waste management problems and evaluating the current performance of waste handlers in Abeokuta. A total of 430 structured questionnaires were administered. Putrescibles were the highest (26.3%) in the waste stream. Of the respondents, 58.14% had no means of estimation of waste; 56.05% do not sort their waste; 41.86% do not have their wastes collected at all; 27.14% recycle their wastes; 47.44% dispose waste through burning; 45.6% pay for waste management services and 42.78% throw their wastes indiscriminately into the nearby bushes. It was recommended that recycling of wastes should be formalized and publicized among residents; waste management planning should not be left entirely to the discretion of the local government. In addition, laws on waste management should be enforced and offenders duly punished. Key words: Solid Waste Management, Generation, Collection, Recycling, Disposal.

The paper focuses on solid waste management in Nigerian cities with particular attention to Lagos and Ado-Ekiti cities. It has critically examined the waste storage methods, frequency of wastes collection and waste disposal methods in both cities. Research findings show that solid waste collection and disposal should be on daily basis in the highly commercialized cities, while in the less commercialized cities, solid waste collection and disposal can be carried out on weekly basis. The waste disposal methods such as open dumps, emptying waste into water bodies which pose great hazard to human, animal and plant lives are commonly practiced in Nigeria, while less hazardous methods such as disposal through incineration and sanitary landfill are less employed.

NIPES JOURNALS

This paper appraised solid waste management in Nigeria with a view to both identifying the existing solid waste management practices and current challenges. The paper also examined the benefits derivable from the adoption of proper solid waste management techniques. The identified methods of solid waste management are incineration, recycling of waste, landfill, source reduction, composting and avoidance and source reduction methods. The identified challenges include poor funding, poor collection techniques, grossly inadequate collection equipment, reckless disposal of solid waste on the environment, huge increase in population and urbanization and poor government attitude to waste management, and lack of trained/professional waste managers. In the light of the challenges, the paper advocates for the control of urbanization and population growth, increased funding for the management of solid waste and commitment from government among others.

Fundamentally, solid waste generation and management is a cause for major concern for all countries both developed and developing. This is because of population density, consumption pattern, production activities and rural-urban migration. The need to adequately manage the volume of waste generated across the country and maintain a safe and sustainable ecosystem is a necessary part of national development. However, Goal 6 of sustainable development goals dwells on access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all. Thus, this sustainable goal are in tandern with goal 7 of millennium development goal which is on environmental sustainability. This paper is to review the solid waste generated across the thirty-six states of Nigeria, Abuja inclusive. The data collected for this process is provided by the Federal Ministry of Environment, via the Urban Development Bank of Nigeria. This data dates back to 1997 statistics. However, there was a review of the system by the Federal Ministry of Environment in 2005. This work will compare both works , draw analysis and relate this to the sustainable development goals .

This study has been carried out to evaluate municipal solid management practices in Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano Metropolis using the concept of sustainable development, the principles of polluter pays (PPP) and conceptual framework for stakeholders in municipal solid waste management. Primary data were generated through administration of 384 survey questionnaires and field interview questions to randomly, systematically and purposefully sampled population while secondary data were obtained from desk review of other literatures. Descriptive statistic was employed for analyses of the data. Findings reveal that 37.5% and 21.6% are of the view that the households practice the less sustainable and ineffective methods of indiscriminate dumping on land, water ways, excavated pits and also burning of wastes respectively. The result also shows that 81% depends heavily on Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) and do not want to pay fee for refuse collections. Similarly, 74.7% reported that the practices of waste management by REMASAB are ineffective while 50% reported that the private agencies' practices are effective. The study furthermore, reveals that poor funding, unskilled personnel, bad attitudinal behaviour, poor supervision and access to some streets by vehicles are the challenges facing the waste management agencies. The study recommends use of bioreactor waste treatment technology, strong legislation, public enlightenment and use of contemporary methods, proper funding and supervisions for the agencies to perform optimally.

Waste management is one of the most underdeveloped industries in Nigeria. People often look at waste management and recycling in these parts of the world as work underprivileged and uneducated do. But that could not be farther from the truth. Today, we are going to look at how to start a waste management business in Nigeria.

According to Statista , the global waste management industry was worth 2080 billion US dollars in 2019 and is projected to grow to 2339.8 billion dollars as early as 2027. So, you can see that the waste management industry is a serious business that can make you good money as an entrepreneur.

Waste management has become an endemic problem in Nigeria. In many cities and towns, people indiscriminately dispose of waste, and even though the law is against it, people tend to find a way around it without any consequences.

Ordinarily, waste management in Nigeria falls to the local governments, but the local governments have shed their responsibilities due to corruption and negligence. Owing to that, many state governments have now opted for a public, private partnership system (PPP) where private individuals and entrepreneurs can engage in waste management activities after obtaining a license from the government.

This post will show you how you can start a profitable waste management business in Nigeria.

Secure Capital

Like every other business, you need capital to start a waste management business in Nigeria. When starting, you need to research how much capital you will need to start your business.

In Lagos, for example, you need to buy a garbage truck to qualify for a waste management license from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority. So, you need to find out the requirements in your state, then cost how much it will require to start the business. Make sure that you also consider the cost of obtaining licenses, permits and registration.

Securing capital for a business in Nigeria could be herculean, but it does not have to be if you plan properly. You can use any of these- bootstrapping , family and friends funding, business loans, and investment from investors to start your waste management company. Click here to find out more ways that you can fund your business.

Register Your Business

After securing your capital, the next step is to register your business. When registering your business, make sure that you properly choose a company structure that fits your business model .

For example, if you register a business name, you will still need to obtain a Tax Identification Number (TIN) before opening a corporate account to accept payments legally. But, on the other hand, if you register a limited liability company, you do not need to obtain a TIN separately.

In conclusion, make sure that you research properly before opting for a particular business structure . The best way to go about it is to marry the different business structures with your organisation’s unique needs, then opting for the one that works best.

To register your business in Nigeria, contact ReDahlia at [email protected]. They make the process seamless for you.

Determine Coverage Area(s)

It would help if you also defined the areas you want to cover when starting your waste management company. The chances are that you will be competing with other waste management companies who already cover some areas, so ensure you consider your coverage area carefully.

Additionally, I put this step before license application because in many states, when you apply for a waste management license, there is a high likelihood that they will ask you which areas you intend to cover.

When trying to determine the areas your company will cover, consider important things like the area’s population, the earning power of people living in the areas, how motorable the area is etc.

Go from idea to starting your business in 30 days

Obtain License To Operate

Another important thing to note is that you need to obtain a government-issued license to operate a waste management company. The requirements for a waste management company differs from state to state, so make sure that you are familiar with the local requirements you need to get approved in your state.

For most states, you can obtain a waste management license and other necessary operation permits from the Ministry of Environment and relevant agencies. For example, the PSP Operator license is handled by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) under the supervision of the ministry of environment in Lagos. Do your research to know which agency is in charge of waste management licensing in your state.

Get A Dumpsite

Getting a dumpsite is an integral aspect of starting a waste management company. You are going to be collecting and disposing of waste for your customers. It, therefore, makes sense that you have a dumpsite where you are legally allowed to dump the waste.

The fact is that it is illegal for you to dump waste illegally, which is why most governments have designated dumpsites where legally registered waste management companies can dump waste. So look for one in your community, and approach them to understand the requirements for you to start offloading waste there.

Buy Necessary Equipment

Depending on the waste management industry sector that you want to work in, you will need different types of equipment to operate your business. Some important tools you will need include gloves, boots, shoves, overalls, signs and others.

The caveat is that you have to first decide on the kind of services you will provide, then buy equipment and tools that will help you provide those services seamlessly.

Market Your Business

Finally, it would be best if you marketed your business to get customers. The first idea is to go to the area where you intend to serve and let them know that you will be offering a waste management service in that area. Let them know that you are there to serve them and that you will appreciate referrals.

Another way you can market your services is by contacting different landlord associations around the area you want to serve and give them incentives to refer their tenants.

Entrepreneurship is about seeing opportunities for solving problems and taking advantage of them. For example, Nigeria has an endemic waste problem, and that is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to take advantage of and create solutions that tackle the waste problem.

Following the steps, I listed above, you can start your waste collection and disposal business.

Yet, business name, location, business history, and future goals are some of the foundational elements you must consider adding to this section:

Business Description:

Describe your business in this section by providing all the basic information:

Describe what kind of waste management company you run and the name of it. You may specialize in one of the following waste management businesses:

  • Recycling centers
  • Waste collection & hauling
  • Composting facilities
  • Hazardous waste management
  • Waste-to-energy plants
  • Landfill management
  • Solid waste management
  • Medical waste management
  • Waste-consulting & advisory services
  • Describe the legal structure of your waste management business, whether it is a sole proprietorship, LLC, partnership, or others.
  • Explain where your business is located and why you selected the place.

Mission Statement:

Business history:.

If you’re an established waste management service provider, briefly describe your business history, like—when it was founded, how it evolved over time, etc.

Market size and growth potential:

Describe your market size and growth potential and whether you will target a niche or a much broader market.

Competitive Analysis:

Market trends:.

Analyze emerging trends in the industry, such as technology disruptions, changes in customer behavior or preferences, etc. Explain how your business will cope with all the trends.

Describe each service:

Provide a detailed description of each service you provide and the types of that particular service you provide.

Quality measures:

This section should explain how you maintain quality standards and consistently provide the highest quality service.

Additional Services:

In short, this section of your waste management plan must be informative, precise, and client-focused. By providing a clear and compelling description of your offerings, you can help potential investors and readers understand the value of your business.

5. Sales And Marketing Strategies

Writing the sales and marketing strategies section means a list of strategies you will use to attract and retain your clients. Here are some key elements to include in your sales & marketing plan:

Unique Selling Proposition (USP):

Define your business’s USPs depending on the market you serve, the equipment you use, and the unique services you provide. Identifying USPs will help you plan your marketing strategies.

Pricing Strategy:

Marketing strategies:, sales strategies:, customer retention:.

Overall, this section of your waste management business plan should focus on customer acquisition and retention.

Have a specific, realistic, and data-driven approach while planning sales and marketing strategies for your waste management business, and be prepared to adapt or make strategic changes in your strategies based on feedback and results.

6. Operations Plan

The operations plan section of your business plan should outline the processes and procedures involved in your business operations, such as staffing requirements and operational processes. Here are a few components to add to your operations plan:

Staffing & Training:

Operational process:, equipment & machinery:.

Include the list of equipment and machinery required for waste management, such as waste collecting vehicles, waste sorting & processing equipment, recycling equipment, hazardous waste handling equipment, landfill equipment, etc.

Adding these components to your operations plan will help you lay out your business operations, which will eventually help you manage your business effectively.

Profit & loss statement:

Cash flow statement:, balance sheet:, break-even point:.

Determine and mention your business’s break-even point—the point at which your business costs and revenue will be equal.

Financing Needs:

Be realistic with your financial projections, and make sure you offer relevant information and evidence to support your estimates.

9. Appendix

The appendix section of your plan should include any additional information supporting your business plan’s main content, such as market research, legal documentation, financial statements, and other relevant information.

  • Add a table of contents for the appendix section to help readers easily find specific information or sections.
  • In addition to your financial statements, provide additional financial documents like tax returns, a list of assets within the business, credit history, and more. These statements must be the latest and offer financial projections for at least the first three or five years of business operations.
  • Provide data derived from market research, including stats about the industry, user demographics, and industry trends.
  • Include any legal documents such as permits, licenses, and contracts.
  • Include any additional documentation related to your business plan, such as product brochures, marketing materials, operational procedures, etc.

Use clear headings and labels for each section of the appendix so that readers can easily find the necessary information.

HOW TO START UP A WASTE MANAGEMENT BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

How to start up a waste management business in Nigeria The waste management business is still relatively new in Nigeria and West Africa hence there isn’t a stiff competition yet. This business can be classified as a multi-million Naira business, there are already some Nigerian entrepreneurs raking in millions from the business.

Do you want to start a waste management company? If Yes, here is a complete guide to starting a waste management business in Nigeria.

HOW TO START UP A WASTE MANAGEMENT BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

Best legal entity to use for a Waste Management Business

Starting a waste collection and management business is indeed a serious business so the legal entity you choose will go a long way to determine how big you want the business to grow. No doubt choosing a legal entity for a business can be a bit challenging.

When it comes to choosing a legal entity for your waste collection and management company, you have the option of choosing from general partnership, a limited partnership, an LLC, a “C” corporation, or an “S” corporation. It is important to clearly state that these different forms of legal structures have their  own advantages and disadvantages; which is why you must weigh your options properly before making your choice.

These are some of the factors you should consider before choosing a legal entity for your waste collection and management business; limitation of personal liability, ease of transferability, admission of new owners and investors’ expectation and of course taxes.

If you take your time to critically study the various legal entities to use for your waste collection and management business, you will agree that limited liability company; an LLC is most suitable. You can start this type of business as limited liability company (LLC) and in future convert it to a ‘C’ corporation or ‘S’ corporation especially when you have the plans of going public and international.

Choosing a niche

The first and foremost thing to do, before starting a waste management business, is to understand your niche. Depending upon your budget, you can select your niche or even a combination of 2 or more types of wastes. There are several types of waste products and materials, each of these wastes requiring different means and procedures for disposal. Some of the different types of waste disposal businesses are:

  • Hazardous or toxic waste disposal business
  • Medical Waste disposal business (e.g.: used needles, syringes, soiled clothing, chemicals, medical devices etc.)
  • Biomedical Waste disposal business (e.g.: unclaimed dead bodies of human beings or animals)
  • Electronic waste disposal business (like CDs, computer parts, mobile phones)
  • Green waste disposal business (decomposable materials like leaves and grasses)
  • Construction waste disposal business (e.g.: nails, insulation and electrical wiring, tree stumps etc.)
  • Nuclear waste disposal business.
  • Household Waste disposal business (e.g.: rotten vegetables, newspapers, cardboard etc.)
  • Chemical waste disposal services (e.g. chemicals used in factories, laboratories etc.)
  • Industrial rubbish removal business (e.g.: wastes generated in mining, manufacturing, construction and metallurgical industries).
  • These can also be categories as commercial waste disposal business and household waste disposal. It’s totally upto you that know you understand your market to capture it.

HOW TO START UP A WASTE MANAGEMENT BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

Market Research

Before starting your waste separation business, get a clear idea of your potential competitors, local junk haulers in your region and their pricing. Compare these with your costs to get an idea of the profits. Understand how tough the competition in the market that you are considering is. If the competition is too tough, you might need to think about starting your business in a different area where these services are not being provided or might have to choose a different niche. Look at major players and even smaller, competing businesses. Decide if you wish to focus on residential or commercial junk removal. Take a look at their advertising strategies, prices, and service areas.

Next, see how big is the market, whether you will be able to sustain or not. Research the prevailing junk disposal business in your area. Try to have a conversation with someone in the same business, in particular in a different city and is willing to discuss the industry with you. Also, figure out where you want to sell; to the landfill, scrap dealers, to nearby charities, or for some other use.

Business Plan

Create a business plan and state your business objectives. Explain what exactly you will do, what will be your target market, what are your specialties, what makes your business unique and better than that of your competitors etc. Explain your pricing model, startup costs, marketing strategy, and how you plan to fund your business.

To have a business plan prepared for you, send an email to [email protected] or contact 0810563601

your Waste Management Business becomes the next important thing. Starting a waste collection business comes with its own share of challenges so it is important to choose the location wisely. It is important to have a contract for a place where you plan to dump or burn waste, preferably away from the cities with the medium cost of transportation involved and to keep away the city from all sorts of diseases. One can only do this in a land designated for waste collection and management companies and for waste recycling plants.

HOW TO START UP A WASTE MANAGEMENT BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

Equipment requirements

This is the list of the important equipments required to set up a waste management business in Nigeria.

  • Waste Collection Truck: You can either use a second-hand van or truck or buy a new one to transport client’s waste to recycling or disposal facilities. To save money, you can also opt for a rented junk removal truck instead of buying a new one initially. The truck should have large load capacity and good fuel economy
  • Heavy Duty Work Wears : To remove dirt and garbage, you would need durable work clothes, gloves, and rubber boots. Loose fitting trousers are suited for both indoor and outdoor jobs and are also comfortable. Clothes should be such that they prevent household and garden pests from biting you.
  • Shovel and rake
  • Heavy-duty Protection: These include facial masks and goggles, dirt and product separator to prevent any contamination from dust and dirt.
  • Incinerator, trash cans, dustbins, waste bags, hose and pipes, etc

Register your company

Register your company name according to the requirements of the corporate affairs commission( CAC), your local government and authorities in charge of waste carriers. Contact your local chamber of commerce to gain more insights for this as registration laws differ for every state.

How To Start Waste Collection Business in Nigeria or Africa: A Guide

waste management business plan in nigeria pdf

How To Start A Lucrative Waste Collection Business In Nigeria Or Africa: The Complete Guide | Image: Pixabay

At every domain of the human life and existence, there are always leftover items or materials, which are considered useless. Such materials range from domestic to industrial items such as used polythene bags, plastic, paper, glass, waste leather materials, rubber, scrap metals, textiles, and so on. There is literally no end to the kinds of trash that accrue from our daily activities. Where there is little or no waste management, especially in urban areas, waste materials are dumped recklessly around residential buildings, drainage systems, water bodies and make-shift dumps, and this results in environmental pollution. What many people do not realize is that there is a lot of wealth in the smelling refuse they dump! One of such lucrative opportunities is waste or garbage collection.

How much wealth lies in waste? The global waste management market was worth USD330.06 billion as of 2017. The sector has witnessed significant growth over the years, and is expected to hit over USD530 billion by 2025 at a CAGR of 6%. The rapid growth is due to growing economies, its consequent industrial expansion as well as growth in population size, especially in developing countries. According to present statistics, Canada (1.3 billion MT), Bulgaria (190 million MT), the United States (258 MT), Estonia (30 million MT) and Finland (92 million MT) produce the largest volumes of waste per annum. However, many countries have very low recycling culture. On this note, Austria stands as the country with the highest recycling rate all over the world.

In Nigeria, not enough attention is given to collecting and recycling of waste. The West African country produces over 32 million metric tonnes of waste each year, enough to generate as much as $8 billion. Much of the waste collection done in Nigeria is practiced using the traditional methods, especially by itinerant scavengers and private waste collection companies. At the moment, waste collection is found mainly in urban areas of Nigeria, including places such as Lagos, Rivers State, Kano, Abuja, etc. If given enough attention, the volumes of waste left to decay on landfills or washed down into water bodies in the country can contribute significantly to the growth of the economy. There is still enough room both for the government and individual investors to delve into the waste collection business.

If you’re planning to start a lucrative waste collection business in Nigeria or any other part of Africa, here is a detailed step-by-step guide for you.

What Is Waste Or Garbage Collection?

Garbage or waste collection refers to the process of collecting, storing, handling, sorting and transporting solid waste materials. Waste collection is an essential component in waste management and waste recycling.

Business Opportunities In Waste Collection In Nigeria And Around The World

1). waste collection:.

Perhaps the most basic opportunity present in the waste collection business is the actual collection of waste itself. Collection of waste materials requires the services of collectors, drivers, and other unskilled workers who undertake the processing, handling and sorting of garbage collected.

2). Waste Evacuation:

In the waste management industry, certain waste personnel are charged with evacuating refuse from designated refuse dumps. This is a core part of waste collection because the official landfills where these wastes are dumped form sources of wealth for waste collectors.

3). Waste Recycling:

After garbage are collected, they are processed for several different purposes and products for use. Recycling waste is a highly lucrative business opportunity on its own, even though it is more capital-intensive and broader in scale than waste collection.
