The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT3) serves as an evaluation tool for gauging nonverbal aptitude in children, assessing their problem-solving, reasoning, and abstract thinking capabilities without relying on language skills.

Created by Jack A. Naglieri, an American psychologist and professor at the University of Virginia, the NNAT3 is an evolution of the original Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT), which debuted in 1988.

Introduced in 2010, the NNAT3 has gained popularity as an instrument for nonverbal aptitude assessment. It comprises 48 unique multiple-choice questions, categorized into three levels: Level A, featuring straightforward questions, while Levels B and C encompass more intricate items. The test is designed to be completed within 30 minutes and is typically administered to children aged 4 to 17. In summary, the NNAT3 is a reliable, valid, and easily administered tool for accurately measuring a child’s capacity for problem-solving, reasoning, and abstract thinking without language reliance.

  • NNAT 3rd to 4th Grades (Level D)

The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) was created by Jack A. Naglieri of Pearson Education as a standardized test for assessing the reasoning and problem-solving abilities of K-12 students (ages 5 to 17).

The NNAT test has become part of the admission process for talented schools and gifted programs across the US.

Unlike similar tests, such as the OLSAT test and the CogAT test , the NNAT assesses students only through their non-verbal skills, and it doesn’t require them to express aptitude in speaking, reading or writing.

Instead, children are required to recognize abstract designs and shapes. Since it contains only minimal language, the NNAT is considered one of the most culturally neutral exams across the country. It enables students to show their aptitude and be scored regardless of their socioeconomic background or prior education.

Although the score on the NNAT can be used as an admission requirement for talented and gifted programs, there could be other reasons for taking the test.

If a child shows any particular talent, they can take the NNAT test, whether they plan to apply for a gifted program or not.

Another popular reason students take this test is its non-verbal nature. Unlike the SCAT exams , this allows children who excel only in non-verbal skills or don’t have English as their first language to showcase their talents.

The levels are based on the child’s age and school year, and they are as follows:

  • Kindergarten: NNAT Level A – Includes only questions from the Pattern Completion and Reasoning by Analogy categories
  • Grade 1: NNAT Level B – Includes questions from Pattern Completion, Reasoning by Analogy and Serial Reasoning
  • Grade 2: NNAT Level C – Questions from Pattern Completion, Reasoning by Analogy, Serial Reasoning and Spatial Visualization
  • Grade 3 to 4: NNAT Level D – Questions from Pattern Completion, Reasoning by Analogy, Serial Reasoning and Spatial Visualization
  • Grade 5 to 6: NNAT Level E – Questions from Pattern Completion, Reasoning by Analogy, Serial Reasoning and Spatial Visualization
  • Grade 7 to 9: NNAT Level F – Incorporates questions from Reasoning by Analogy, Serial Reasoning and Spatial Visualization
  • Grade 10 to 12: NNAT Level G – Composed of questions from the Reasoning by Analogy, Serial Reasoning and Spatial Visualization categories

NNAT Question Types and Examples

As you’ve seen above, the NNAT test has up to four types of questions. Each of them assesses a different skill.

Here is what questions for each category cover and what they may look like with some Naglieri test examples.

Pattern Completion

These NNAT test questions assess your child’s ability to identify the missing piece of a pattern.

For instance, they will be presented with a triangle within a rectangle, with part of the triangle obscured.

They will also be provided with several boxes containing part of a triangle and asked to identify the box with the correct part.

Reasoning by Analogy

These types of NNAT sample questions evaluate whether a child can make a connection between different shapes.

As an NNAT example, they may be presented with two boxes with a circle and a triangle in different colors.

In one, the triangle is orange and is in front of a blue circle. The other box has the colors and the pattern positions reversed.

In a third box, a child will be presented with a green rectangle in front of a yellow letter.

Out of the possible options given at the bottom, the child should choose the most appropriate one – which would be a yellow rectangle behind a green letter.

Serial Reasoning

This category assesses your child’s ability to find the relationships between objects presented in rows and columns.

An NNAT sample test question may be that they are presented with nine boxes in three rows and three columns. Eight items are revealed, and one is hidden by a question mark.

The first row may contain three arrows facing different directions, the second one three books also facing different directions – but matching the ones from the first row. The third row will contain two elliptical shapes, matching the first and the last direction from above.

Students should identify the missing elliptical shape from the options below by looking at the one that’s in the same position as the book and the arrow in the middle boxes of their respective rows.

Spatial Visualization

With a spatial visualization test, students will be asked to identify what’s happening with the shapes in a row of three boxes and apply the same logic to complete the row below it.

For example, in the first box of the first row, they may see a ball, and in the second one, an umbrella. In the third box, the umbrella will be placed on top of the ball. In the first box of the second row, they will be presented with a figure, and in the third one, the figure has a scarf around its neck.

The children’s task is to identify the missing link between the two boxes out of the options below the assignment. The correct answer is the picture of a scarf.

Each student receives three scores for their NNAT – a Raw Score, the Naglieri Ability Index (NAI) score and a Percentile Rank. The Raw Score represents the number of correct answers out of the 48 questions. If a student answers 40 questions correctly, their score will be expressed as 40/48.

The NAI Index is a score that compares a student’s Raw Score to the result of a student born within the same three-month window. The highest possible score on the NAI is 160, with the normal score range starting at around 85 and the highest ones are over 130.

A student Percentile Rank score also reveals how they’ve performed compared to students born within a three-month age range.

However, this result is expressed in percentiles and is used to decide on admission outcomes. The higher the percentile, the better a student’s results are compared to everyone else applying for the same program.

Since different districts or educational institutions have unique entry criteria for their programs, there isn’t a universal target score children should reach. Researching the requirement of the school or program a student is interested in can help determine what their target score and percentile should be.

Test scores are typically announced several weeks after the assessment once the data from nationwide testing is collected and processed.

The scores are used by educators to assess the skill levels of gifted and talented students.

While there is no official passing score, it is possible for a child to fall short of a particular score and fail to qualify in the percentile required to enter a particular school or program.

Since the NNAT is a challenging test, taking the time to prepare for it is crucial.

Here are some of the top tips when preparing for the NNAT test.

Step 1 . Understanding Test Levels

The test levels vary in difficulty according to the age group they are created for. Make sure to research the type of questions your child may get on a test designed for their age group.

Help them familiarize themselves with questions of the appropriate level, so your child knows what to expect from their NNAT exam and can take it with more confidence.

A kindergarten NNAT sample test won’t be of much use for an older child.

Step 2 . Practicing Similar Questions

Since your child may be given questions they haven’t covered in their school assignments, knowing what kind of questions they’ll encounter on the test will serve as added insurance.

Fortunately, there are many free NNAT practice tests online where you can get free sample questions for each level and type of question. Practicing these NNAT examples will help your child prepare for the real test.

Step 3 . Practicing the Testing Environment

Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test practice is vital. Unless they are used to working in short time frames, your child will most likely have trouble answering 48 questions in just 30 minutes.

There may also be too many distractions preventing them from performing well.

Completing a Naglieri practice test in the right environment will enhance their ability to focus on getting as many answers correct as possible within 30 minutes. As mentioned above, there are a number of free NNAT practice tests online.

Step 4 . Recognizing the Child’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Each child has their own strengths and weaknesses across the different types of questions. Through regular NNAT practice tests , you will be able to recognize these and start focusing on the areas where your child isn’t performing optimally.

Step 5 . Encouraging Puzzle and Spatial Play

There are many ways a child can improve their skills besides practicing questions that test their aptitudes.

Encouraging your child to play with spatial toys (blocks, mechanical toys, etc.) and puzzles are great ways to enhance their problem-solving skills.

Step 6 . Maintaining a Positive Attitude

No matter how much your child struggles with a certain group of questions, you should always encourage them to maintain a positive attitude.

The best way to achieve this is to provide them with an adequate environment for practice, healthy nutrition, physical activity and a restful night of sleep.

The latter is particularly important to have the night before the exam as it can help reduce your child’s anxiety levels.

For those children taking a NNAT kindergarten practice test, it’s always good to be patient with them, as those early years can be especially tough.

What is the NNAT test?

The NNAT (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test) is a standardized, non-verbal exam administered to K-12 children (aged 5 to 17) developed by Pearson Inc.

It’s used mainly across the US as part of the admission process for gifted and talented programs.

What is the NNAT test used for?

The NNAT test assesses non-verbal reasoning and problem-solving skills in children.

While this assessment can be used for several reasons, its main purpose is to quickly identify children’s talents that qualify them for entering gifted programs.

The NNAT evaluates a child’s intelligence level without having them prove their speech, reading or writing skills.

Where can I prepare for the NNAT test?

There are plenty of websites where students can find sample questions to prepare for the NNAT test .

Schools may also help with the preparation by showing students the types of questions they can expect.

Students can also prepare at home by taking mock exams and working under a tight time frame so they can get used to working under pressure.

How many times can I retake the NNAT test if I fail?

Students who don’t get a good score on the NNAT test can retake it once while they are in the same grade as they were when they failed it.

Schools and gifted programs typically offer a chance for a retake every six months so students can improve their scores and get into higher percentiles.

How many questions are on the NNAT test?

The NNAT test contains 48 questions overall.

These are distributed across four categories – Pattern Completion, Reasoning by Analogy, Serial Reasoning and Spatial Visualization.

What is the time frame for taking the NNAT test?

The NNAT is a relatively short test, with students only having 30 minutes to answer all questions.

The session is strictly timed as it assesses skills that gifted students in a given age group typically display very quickly.

What is a good score on the NNAT test?

This depends on the institution and the program your child is applying for. For example, for some talent programs, achieving a high average score of 112 to 120 and getting into the 76th to 89th percentile will be enough.

Other programs may require students to have a superior score of 121 to 133 and the most exclusive ones will even demand 134 or higher, which puts the child in the top two percentile.

Where can I find a comprehensive guide and tips on the NNAT test?

Pearson Assessment offers a comprehensive guide for parents and children from the K-12 age group.

While this material is not free, it can be a great investment in your child’s future. There are also free guides on several test-prep websites, such as WikiJob and TestPrep-Online .

How hard is the NNAT test?

The NNAT test can be challenging – partially because of the tight time limit students have to answer the questions.

In addition, the questions may differ from the ones they’ve encountered in school, so children can have difficulties getting a good score without practice.

It’s best to find an NNAT kindergarten practice test or the relevant one for your child’s level.

Is the NNAT test similar to an IQ test?

Since it lacks the verbal component, the NNAT is different from a classic IQ test.

Unlike an IQ test, the NNAT focuses on innate skills rather than knowledge. It also differs in its scoring system, which is composed of three different scores.

How is the NNAT test scored?

There are three main test scores for the NNAT test .

The first is the Raw Score – which represents the total number of correct answers.

The Naglieri Ability Index (NAI) compares your child’s scores to students born within three months of the child.

The last score is the Percentile Rank, which shows the child’s performance compared to the scores of all students of a similar age nationwide.

Where can I find more practice questions for the NNAT test?

For a free online NNAT practice test there are a few options.

The website that offers a guide on the NNAT test will also have a free NNAT practice test online.

Sites like TestingMom.com offer plenty of free sample questions your child can practice with for NNAT test prep.

The child’s school may also be able to provide some sample tests if you want an NNAT free practice test.

The NNAT test is applied as an entrance test in many gifted programs throughout the US.

That said, your child can also take the test if they are just discovering their talents and haven’t applied for any program yet.

Since the test assesses how the child thinks, rather than what they know, taking it can be a great way to learn about your child’s skills and give a few pointers on how to proceed with their education. Since different institutions use different scoring systems, their final score will determine which program they may be qualified for.

While the test doesn’t require your child to study for it, they will still need to prepare themselves. They may receive questions they haven’t encountered throughout their school lessons.

In addition, knowing they will take this test will probably make them anxious. Preparing for it by familiarizing themselves with the different question formats and answering sample questions will help them to take the test with confidence.

NNAT Kindergarten (Level A)

Nnat 1st grade (level b), nnat 2nd grade (level c), nnat 3rd to 4th grades (level d).

The Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test , commonly known as the NNAT, is an assessment published by Pearson Education that is often used to identify gifted and talented children.

It is primarily encountered during the entrance process for schools and talent programs.

The NNAT tests the problem-solving and abstract reasoning ability of K-12 students (aged between 5 and 17). There are seven different levels of NNAT, ranging from A to G (from kindergarten to school grades 10–12).

It is a standardized test, which allows for objective talent measurement, but the test your child sits will be tailored to their age group.

Not all levels of the test cover the same content, for example, spatial visualization isn’t included until children reach Grade 2.

The most recent version of the test is the NNAT 3, which has 48 questions and a time limit of 30 minutes.

A high score on the NNAT can evidence your child’s talent and ensure they are placed within a supportive learning environment that nurtures and encourages their skill.

Differences Between the NNAT-2 and NNAT3 Test

The NNAT-2 (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, Second Edition) and NNAT3 (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test, Third Edition) are cognitive assessment tools commonly used to measure nonverbal reasoning skills in children.

While both tests share similarities, there are some notable differences between them.

Here are some key distinctions:

Test Structure

The NNAT-2 consists of four types of questions: pattern completion, reasoning by analogy, serial reasoning and spatial visualization.

On the other hand, the NNAT3 features five question types: pattern completion, reasoning by analogy, serial reasoning, spatial visualization and pattern matrices.

The addition of pattern matrices in NNAT3 allows for a broader assessment of a child's nonverbal reasoning abilities.

The age range for the NNAT-2 is typically from ages 3 to 18, while the NNAT3 is designed for children between the ages of 5 and 17.

The NNAT3 extends the lower age limit by two years compared to NNAT-2, providing a more targeted assessment for early elementary school students.

Item Content

The specific item content and visuals used in the NNAT-2 and NNAT3 tests differ.

While both tests evaluate nonverbal reasoning, the specific stimuli and visual formats may vary, ensuring that the content remains fresh and engaging for test-takers.

Normative Data

Normative data refers to the performance standards based on the scores of a representative sample of individuals.

The NNAT-2 and NNAT3 have separate normative data sets, which are used to compare an individual's performance with that of their peers.

The norms for the NNAT3 are more recent, reflecting the performance of a more recent population of test-takers.

Scoring and Interpretation

The scoring and interpretation procedures for the NNAT-2 and NNAT3 may differ due to variations in the item content and normative data.

Test publishers provide specific scoring guidelines and interpretive reports for each edition to help educators and professionals understand the results accurately.

NNAT Test Quick Facts

The NNAT is a nonverbal cognitive ability test designed to measure a student's nonverbal reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Nonverbal Assessment

The test is entirely nonverbal, meaning it does not rely on verbal or language-based skills.

Instead, it uses visual and abstract stimuli to assess a student's abilities.

The NNAT is typically administered to students between the ages of 5 and 17.

However, there are different versions available for specific age groups, such as the NNAT-2 for ages 3 to 18 and the NNAT3 for ages 5 to 17.

Test Sections

The NNAT consists of various question types that assess different aspects of nonverbal reasoning, such as pattern completion, reasoning by analogy, serial reasoning, spatial visualization and pattern matrices (in the NNAT3).

The test is timed, with specific time constraints for each section or subset of questions.

The time limits vary based on the student's age and the version of the test being administered.

Individual or Group Administration

The NNAT can be administered individually or in a group setting, depending on the context and available resources.

Use in Gifted and Talented Programs

The NNAT is often used as part of the assessment process for identifying gifted and talented students who may excel in areas not typically measured by traditional academic tests.

Standardized Scoring

The NNAT provides standardized scores that allow for comparison of a student's performance to a normative sample of the same age or grade level.

The scores are typically reported as percentile ranks or scaled scores.

Test Publisher

The NNAT was developed by Dr. Jack Naglieri and is published by NCS Pearson, Inc.

Other editions and adaptations may also exist, such as the NNAT-3, NNAT2 and NNAT Level D.

Interpretation

The results of the NNAT should be interpreted by qualified professionals who are familiar with the test's administration and scoring guidelines.

Interpretation often involves considering other factors, such as a student's academic performance and additional assessments, to gain a comprehensive understanding of their abilities.

The NNAT Test Levels in Detail

  • 48 questions
  • Pattern completion and reasoning by analogy questions.

Practice NNAT Kindergarten (Level A)

  • Pattern completion, reasoning by analogy and serial reasoning questions

Practice NNAT 1st Grade (Level B)

  • Pattern completion, reasoning by analogy, serial reasoning and spatial visualization questions

Practice NNAT 2nd Grade (Level C)

Practice NNAT 3rd to 4th Grades (Level D)

The NNAT is a purely non-verbal test, which means it does not feature any questions relating to language, vocabulary or grammar (including tenses).

The NNAT test focuses solely on spatial problem-solving. It is considered a fair and unbiased way of testing children for cognitive ability.

Scores are not impacted by a child’s first language, cultural background, educational history or any difficulties with speech, communication or reading.

To assist children with vision impairments, the shapes in the test are as clear as possible and only use the colors black, white, yellow and blue.

The NNAT is considered one of the most suitable tests for cross-cultural assessment, allowing for the identification of talent regardless of language-development skills.

The NNAT is widely used to assess children’s cognitive capacities with as little interference from culture-specific factors as possible.

There are several reasons why your child may take the NNAT test.

The assessment is used to:

  • Fairly test the aptitude of children who speak English as a second language.
  • Measure cognitive ability in children who have a learning disability specifically related to reading or speaking, or who suffer from speech delays.
  • Project the grades of children in their early days of schooling, before they have undertaken other forms of assessment.
  • Determine which children should be accepted into gifted and talented programs .
  • Assess whether a child reaches the criteria to be accepted into a particular school.
  • Privately test a child’s problem-solving and spatial aptitude.

For the latter use, the NNAT test results may be practically used to demonstrate a child’s ability.

For example, to counter a school’s grade projection or assessment or to advocate for the child to be moved to a different teaching set.

If your child is taking the NNAT – for any of the reasons above – Test Prep’s NNAT preparation program will allow them to become familiar with the test format and increase their chances of success.

Test Prep offers a family membership plan , which can be a good option for families with more than one child, as it provides a 12-month membership to all NNAT tests.

Practice NNAT Test with Test Prep Online

The NNAT is administered in a group format.

Depending on the circumstances, this may be in person or online.

The test contains minimal language, including few written directions. It instead relies upon examples using illustrative shapes and patterns to explain what the questions in each section are asking.

During the test, a facilitator will guide your child through the questions, making the instructions clear and giving prompts.

What Types of Questions Are on the NNAT?

The questions on the NNAT are split into four sections:

  • Pattern completion
  • Reasoning by analogy
  • Serial reasoning
  • Spatial visualization

To achieve a high score on the test, your child will need to be familiar with the different question styles.

Pattern Completion

Pattern completion questions ask your child to identify the missing piece of a pattern. A pattern in a rectangle will be presented. A section of the pattern will be obscured by a white box with a question mark.

Identify which design – out of the five options given – completes the pattern.

Reasoning by Analogy

These types of questions explore the relationships between shapes. Your child will encounter four boxes that contain shapes and/or symbols (at higher levels the matrix will feature six boxes). The last box will contain only a question mark.

The task is to determine how the shapes are changing from box to box. This may be in terms of positioning (transformation or rotation), shading or color. Shapes may change across both rows and columns.

Select the answer option that completes the matrix.

NNAT Test

Serial Reasoning

Serial reasoning questions also explore your child’s ability to identify the relationships between objects across rows and columns. A matrix with nine boxes will be presented, the last box featuring only a question mark.

Your child will need to look at the shape(s) presented in the other boxes and deduce the rule(s) that are governing them. Using these, they must choose which answer option belongs in the final box.

Which shape completes the pattern?

NNAT Test

Spatial Visualization

These questions, once again, involve shapes organized into rows and columns. Your child will be presented with six boxes, containing shapes in combination. These shapes may transform, rotate or invert across the row.

The task is to identify what is happening to the shapes in the top row, and then use this sequence of rules to determine which answer option correctly completes the row below.

Which answer option completes the second row?

NNAT Test

Whether your child is sitting the NNAT 3 or the earlier NNAT or NNAT 2, the question types involved are the same. The only differences are the number of questions – the initial NNAT contains 38 problems – and the colors used.

How to Pass the NNAT Test

How Is the NNAT Test Scored?

You will receive three scores for your child’s NNAT – a raw score, Naglieri Ability Index (NAI) score and a percentile rank.

As the NNAT 3 test has 48 questions, your child’s raw score will be out of 48. If your child answered 33 questions correctly, their raw score would be 33/48.

Naglieri Ability Index (NAI)

The NAI index is calculated from your child’s raw score. It is a standardized, comparative score that compares your child’s result within a very narrow age band (comparisons are made nationally with students born within the same three-month window).

The highest possible NAI score is 160, with the average score being around 100. A normal score range starts at around 85, and a high score would be anything over 130.

Percentile Rank

Your child’s percentile rank score also indicates how your child performed against students born within a three-month age range. A percentile rank score of 70 indicates that your child’s score was higher than 70% of students tested in their age range.

School districts often use percentile scores to compare performance and determine admission outcomes.

There is no official pass score for the NNAT, as different school districts and organizations set their own standards for giftedness.

Is It Possible to Fail the NNAT Test?

Whilst there is no official standard that delineates a pass or fail on the NNAT, it is possible to secure a result that falls short of the standard set by the administrator of the test.

Some schools may test students every school year, others at designated intervals that correspond to talent programs or opportunities for gifted students.

There are usually no repeats on these assessments, so practicing using NNAT sample tests is prudent.

The NNAT test could have a bearing on the type of educational environment your child is taught in.

Whilst it is important not to put too much pressure on the outcome of the test, these simple tips will help you prepare your child for the test in a comprehensive yet fun, engaging way.

Step 1 . Prepare Your Child for Their Specific Test Level

The NNAT exam is used across a wide age range (from kindergarten to Grade 12), so the content and difficulty of the test vary accordingly. Research which elements will be involved in the test for your child’s age group and prepare specifically for each of these aspects.

If your child knows exactly what to expect from their test, they’ll feel less daunted on the day of the assessment and perform better. It is important to boost confidence and avoid any pressure around the outcome of the test.

Step 2 . Use Practice NNAT Tests

The best way to prepare for an upcoming NNAT test is to sit practice tests that will familiarize your child with the format, content and style of the NNAT exam. Test Prep has online guides and practice questions for all NNAT levels.

These sample tests can be accessed via an individual or family membership which provides 12 months of membership across three accounts, so your children can be ready to succeed in all of their tests.

Step 3 . Get Siblings or Cousins Involved in the Preparation

To make practicing for the test more fun, get your child’s siblings or cousins involved and turn preparation into a game. Children have inventive ways of learning, and other children can teach concepts in accessible ways that may not occur to adults.

Instead of it always being you who works with your child to prepare for the exam, get other voices and novel approaches involved.

Step 4 . Practice Pattern Sequencing Tasks

The pattern completion and reasoning by analogy sections appear on the NNAT test for all age groups. Both the serial reasoning (included for Grade 1 and above) and spatial visualization sections (Grade 2 and above) involve similar tasks – shapes and symbols arranged in boxes and presented in columns and rows.

Familiarize your child with patterns and sequences, getting them to explain the transitions occurring and differences they can see as the sequences progress.

Step 5 . Supplement Practice Tests with Other Puzzles

Preparation doesn’t need to consist of only practice tests. Accompany this important aspect of preparation with some lighter tasks. Practice simple reasoning games, riddles and puzzles to capture your child’s attention and make problem-solving with shapes fun.

You could try folding some origami, completing jigsaw puzzles or playing some reasoning-based online games.

Step 6 . Encourage Spatial Play

As the test is non-verbal and focuses solely upon abstract and spatial problem-solving, practical play can help hone the required skills.

Encourage your child to play with blocks or mechanical toys to improve spatial reasoning. Get them used to encountering and identifying different shapes, and to noticing how components fit together.

Step 7 . Practice Holding Attention

The NNAT has a duration of 30 minutes, which is a long time for a young child to sit and concentrate on a test paper.

In preparation, accustom your child to sitting still for 30 minutes at a time and focusing upon a task. It doesn’t matter whether they’re coloring, painting or playing with soft toys or building blocks; what’s important is the fixed attention.

Start with short sessions, and increase the length of time in achievable increments as and when you can.

How to Prepare for NNAT Test

Preparing for the NNAT (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test) can help familiarize you with the test format and improve your child's nonverbal reasoning skills.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for the NNAT:

Understand the Test Format

Familiarize yourself and your child with the structure and question types of the NNAT.

Review sample questions and become comfortable with the visual stimuli used in the test.

This will help you understand the types of patterns and reasoning you may encounter.

Practice with Sample Questions

Seek out NNAT sample questions and practice materials available online or in test preparation books.

Solving these questions will help them become familiar with the types of problems presented in the test and develop strategies to solve them efficiently.

Develop Nonverbal Reasoning Skills

Since the NNAT is a test of nonverbal reasoning, it's essential to develop and improve your nonverbal cognitive abilities.

Engage in activities that enhance your child's visual-spatial skills, pattern recognition, analogical reasoning and spatial visualization.

These skills can be improved through puzzles, brain teasers, visual pattern exercises and activities that involve manipulating and visualizing objects.

Time Management

The NNAT is a timed test, so practicing time management is crucial. As you solve sample questions, keep track of your child's timing and aim to complete each question within the allocated time.

This will help them develop a sense of pacing and ensure that they can answer as many questions as possible within the time limit.

Analyze Your Mistakes

After practicing with sample questions, review your child's answers and analyze any mistakes made.

Understand the reasoning behind the correct answers and identify any patterns or strategies they may have missed.

This analysis will help you improve your child's approach and avoid similar mistakes in the actual test.

Get Adequate Rest

Prior to the test day, ensure you get sufficient sleep and rest.

Being well-rested will help them stay focused and perform at your best during the test.

Familiarize Your Child with Test Conditions

If possible, try to create a testing environment similar to the actual test conditions.

Minimize distractions, sit at a desk or table, and time yourself while practicing sample questions.

This will help your child adapt to the test conditions and reduce any test-related anxiety.

Seek Additional Resources

Consider utilizing test preparation resources such as books, online courses, or tutoring services specifically designed for the NNAT.

These resources can provide targeted guidance and additional practice opportunities.

What is a good score on the NNAT?

A high average score on the NNAT test can range between 112 to 120. If you achieve anywhere within this range, you will put yourself in the 76th to 89th percentile.

If you score between 121 to 133 then you will be considered superior, and if you score 134 or more, then you will be in the top 2% of scores.

Is the NNAT a timed test?

The NNAT is not the longest examination and pupils will only need thirty minutes to complete the test. It is done under timed conditions in a school environment, but because of how short it is, it can be done at home or in any quiet environment.

Is NNAT an IQ test?

The NNAT test is not an IQ test because it does not include a verbal assessment section. It is a non-verbal examination that tests what a child has learned in their school.

What does the NNAT test?

Although it is not an IQ test, it still examines a child’s cognitive ability.

Another interesting element of the NNAT test is that it does not require the pupil to have a primary spoken or written language.

Students are tested by questions that involve shapes and figures. These are elements that they will have learned in a school environment.

The NNAT is considered one of the fairest cognitive ability tests. It will give your child the chance to display their talent through non-verbal skills, avoiding any of the disadvantages embedded within other verbal ability tests. Children from all demographics have been found to score equally well.

Despite the unbiased nature of the test, preparation is key as encountering an unfamiliar format or experiencing excessive nervousness will have a negative impact on the test result. With some targeted (and fun!) practice, you can help your child to perform at their best.

A strong NNAT score evidences your child’s ability and may grant inclusion into a school’s program for gifted and talented children. Opportunities such as this are central to educational development.

Preparing diligently for the test will ensure that your child – whatever their age – can accurately reflect their ability so they receive the right level of support within their learning environment.

Remember, though, that no single test can give a full or accurate picture of a child’s ability. Children all have different strengths and talents which should be embraced and celebrated, and not reduced to a simple test score.

Below there are different types of questions that can appear in the NNAT Level C test. Read the instructions before you start solving the questions.

Reasoning by Analogy

nnat3 grade 2 practice questions

Answer & Explanation

The correct answer is C .

In the above analogy, look for a relationship between the figures across the rows and down the columns. The direction in which you examine the question should depend on where you can most easily visualize the analogous relationship. Look at the top row. The figure on the left contains a yellow rectangle on top of a blue triangle, while the figure on the right contains a yellow triangle on top of a blue rectangle. The colors and positions of the shapes have been switched. The figures in the bottom row will exhibit the same relationship. Since the figure on the left is a blue hexagon on top of a yellow semicircle, the figure on the right will be a blue semicircle on top of a yellow hexagon (answer choice C).

nnat3 grade 2 practice questions

The correct answer is E .

In the above analogy, look for a relationship between the figures across the rows and down the columns. The direction in which you examine the question should depend on where you can most easily visualize the analogous relationship. Look at the left column. The top figure is identical to the bottom figure, as both contain a blue arrow pointing to the right and a white arrow pointing downward, in a yellow background. The figures in the right column will exhibit the same relationship. Since the top figure is a blue arrow pointing to the right and a white arrow pointing downward in a yellow background, the bottom figure will be exactly the same. Thus, the correct answer is answer choice E.

Pattern Completion

nnat level c pattern completion

The correct answer is A .

Look at the design in the large rectangle while paying attention to the missing square. Which answer choice completes the pattern? Look at the arrow in the top-left corner of the large rectangle. As you move clockwise around the sides of the rectangle, each blue arrow rotates 90 degrees counterclockwise. Rotating the arrow to the right of the empty square 90 degrees counterclockwise will result in a vertical blue arrow pointing downwards. Notice that only part of the arrow is missing. The only answer choice that conforms to these properties is answer choice A.

NNAT LEVEL C

The correct answer is C . Look at the design in the large rectangle while paying attention to the missing square. Which answer choice completes the pattern? Imagine extending the arrows into the empty square. The top of the square will contain two parts of the two incomplete yellow arrows while the bottom of the square will contain two parts of the two incomplete blue arrows. The only image that conforms to these requirements is answer choice C.

Serial Reasoning

nnat3 grade 2 practice questions

The correct answer is E. Pay attention to the three columns in the box. In the left column there are three plus signs, in the middle column there are three equal signs, and in the right column there are three multiplication signs. Since the empty frame is in the right column, we know that the answer choice will have a multiplication sign. We can eliminate answer choices B, C, and D, as they do not have multiplication signs.

We are left with answer choices A and E.

Now look across the rows. What pattern do you see? Pay attention to the colors. The top row contains blue figures on a yellow background, the middle row contains yellow figures on a white background, and the bottom row contains white figures on a blue background. Since the empty frame is in the bottom row, our answer choice will contain a white sign on a blue background. We are left with answer choice E.

PATTERN COMPLETION

Questions in this subsection are similar to a jigsaw puzzle. Students are presented with a pattern contained inside a larger design, and a section has been removed. The students must identify the correct piece which is missing from the design.

REASONING BY ANALOGY

This is an analogy-type question that measures students’ visual-spatial reasoning skills. The child must be able to identify logical relationships between different shapes and figures. An example might be that a student is presented with a large triangle followed by a small triangle, then must deduce that a large square followed by a small square fits the same logical pattern.

SERIAL REASONING

These questions require students to view figures and designs that change and form logical patterns, then determine the next design within the pattern. Students must identify a relationship within the top row, and then deduce the correct shape so that the bottom row follows the same pattern.

SPATIAL VISUALIZATION

These questions require students to deduce how two or more designs would look once they are combined. More complicated questions require students to deduce what the designs would look like when they are combined and rotated, folded, or otherwise changed (“hole punch” questions require students to determine what a piece of paper would look like after a hole is punched in it and it’s unfolded).

(answer: B)

The first step is to familiarize yourself with what’s on the test. The NNAT3 test for the third grade is a nonverbal test. This means that instead of relying on words, the questions incorporate shapes and figures. The test doesn’t measure what your child has learned in school; rather, it measures his or her reasoning abilities. This is good in that it means your child’s schooling won’t have as large of an impact on their ability to do well on the exam. But this also means that you’ll need to familiarize your child with the skills they’ll need to do well on the test, since they may not have encountered them very much.

I love teaching my child how to succeed thier nnat3 level d learning. Thank you for a practice session for my child to succeed on the nnat testing. You made my child a gifted and talented student. Thank you. If i were the president i would give you the noble prize. Hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray! You helped my child A LOT.

Sharon Hutchens

My son finished 3rd grade this year and did not make the cut for AIG. Out of the four criteria that give points toward qualifying, his CogAT was low and took away points. I have spoken with the school district AIG lead, and he may be able to take the Naglieri once school is in to replace the low CogAT score. How can I help him prepare for the Naglieri and perform well? Thanks for any information and wisdom you can share. Sharon

What is the NNAT®?

The NNAT (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test) is a cognitive ability test that is a nonverbal measure of general ability. The test was designed by Jack A. Naglieri, PhD, and is published by Pearson Education. The NNAT tests are often used to identify gifted and talented children for entrance into school accelerated and gifted and talented programs. The NNAT tests are nonverbal tests (requiring minimal use of language and instructions) which make use of abstract shapes and designs, and are therefore a good culturally neutral assessment of general ability.

There are three editions of the test

  • NNAT® (first edition)
  • NNAT®-2 (second edition)
  • NNAT®3 (third edition)

Differences between the NNAT®, NNAT®-2 and NNAT®3

All versions (or editions) of the NNAT are similar in the type of questions they test for i.e. they all test for the following four question types:

Pattern Completion

Reasoning by analogy, serial reasoning, spatial visualization.

The NNAT® (first edition) was the earliest NNAT test to be introduced and it contains 38 questions.

The later NNAT®-2 (second edition) and the more recent NNAT®3 (third edition) tests both contain 48 questions and should both be completed in 30 minutes.

The NNAT®-2 and NNAT®3 are quite similar, and NNAT2 test prep material can be used to help prepare for NNAT3 tests.

Pearson’s NNAT3 Manual for Levels A-D states

Although NNAT3 consists of an entirely new set of items, the item types are the same as on NNAT2, and each level of the NNAT3 and NNAT2 forms have a similar representation of types. Therefore, NNAT3 and NNAT2 are expected to measure the same construct and to correlate highly with each other.

The items referred to are the questions and the item types are the four question types.

There is a difference between NNAT2 and NNAT3 tests in terms of the colors used to create items (or questions). Both tests use the four colors black, white, yellow and blue, but for the fifth color, NNAT2 uses another shade of blue whereas NNAT3 uses green.

Visuprep NNAT2 tests use another shade of blue rather than green for the fifth color. However, most questions do not make use of a fifth color (i.e. two shades of blue), so the difference, in terms of color, with NNAT3 tests is minimal.

NNAT Test Question Types and Levels

There are four types of question that can appear in NNAT tests:

Information on these question types is shown below:

Pattern Completion problems call for students to recognize the option which will complete the given pattern.

Reasoning by analogy questions contain geometric shapes which have a logical relationship between them. Students need to recognize how the objects change (e.g. in size or color etc) when one moves across rows and/or down columns.

Serial Reasoning questions contain a series of shapes that change in a sequence across rows and down columns. The student needs to identify the next shape in the sequence.

Spatial visualization questions require the student to recognize how two or more designs would look if combined.

There are seven levels of NNAT test, depending on a student’s grade level. The seven levels and their associated grades are shown below:

  • Level A (Kindergarten)
  • Level B (Grade 1)
  • Level C (Grade 2)
  • Level D (Grades 3 & 4)
  • Level E (Grades 5 & 6)
  • Level F (Grades 7, 8 & 9)
  • Level G (Grades 10, 11 & 12)

The questions that appear in our NNAT test prep demo software are shown below.

nnat2 test prep grades 3 and 4 pattern completion

The yellow rectangles must point toward the right, therefore the answer cannot be (1) or (2). There must be approximately one and a half horizontal dark blue rectangles, so the answer cannot be (3) or (5). Therefore the answer is (4).

nnat3 test prep grades 3 and 4 reasoning by analogy

The second box in each row contains three similar shapes placed on top of or inside each other. The three shapes are similar to the three shapes shown in the first box of the row. For each row, the color of the innermost shape in the second box is the same as the color of the top shape in the first box, the color of the middle shape in the second box is the same as the color of the bottom shape in the first box and the color of the outer shape in the second box is the same as the color of the middle shape in the first box. Therefore the answer will be the one which has three overlapping squares where the outer square is white, the middle square is yellow and the inner square is blue. Therefore the answer is (2).

nnat3 test prep grades 3 and 4 serial reasoning

Each box has a background color and contains a bullet and a small square. Looking at each row, you can see that the background color of each box is different and must be either yellow, white or blue. Then looking at the third row, you can see that background colors of white and blue have been used (for boxes 1 and 2) and therefore box 3 must have a yellow background. Looking at the five possible answers, the only ones with a yellow background are (1) and (4), therefore the answer must be one of these. Looking at answers (1) and (4), the bullet is the same in both and therefore this must be correct for the bullet, so now look at the small square in answers (1) and (4). The small square in answers (1) and (4) is in the same position (so its position must be correct), but has a different color, so one of these colors is incorrect.

Looking at each row and concentrating on the color of the small square, you can see that its color is different within each box and must be either yellow, white or blue. Then looking at the third row, you can see that the colors of white and yellow have been used for the small square (in boxes 1 and 2) and therefore box 3 must contain a blue small square. Therefore the answer must be (1).

nnat3 test prep grades 3 and 4 spatial visualization

Looking at the first row, the design in the third box is the designs in the first box and the second box combined. Therefore the answer must be the designs in the first box and the second box of the second row combined. The answer cannot be (1) because the two parallel lines pointing to the right are too high up the box i.e. they are too near the top left corner of the box. The answer cannot be (2) because one of the lines is too near the bottom right corner of the box. The answer cannot be (4) because the two parallel lines pointing to the right are too far apart and the two parallel lines pointing to the left are too near to each other. The answer cannot be (5) because the two parallel lines pointing to the left are in different positions to the two lines in row 2 column 2. Therefore the answer is (3).
