Two experiments evaluated skilled typists’ ability to report knowledge about the layout of keys on a standard keyboard. In Experiment 1, subjects judged the relative direction of letters on the computer keyboard. One group of subjects was asked to imagine the keyboard, one group was allowed to look at the keyboard, and one group was asked to type the letter pair before judging relative direction. The imagine group had larger angular error and longer response time than both the look and touch groups. In Experiment 2, subjects placed one key relative to another. Again, the imagine group had larger angular error, larger distance error, and longer response time than the other groups. The two experiments suggest that skilled typists have poor explicit knowledge of key locations. The results are interpreted in terms of a model with two hierarchical parts in the system controlling typewriting.

The problem of designing new keyboard layouts able to improve the typing speed of an average message has been widely considered in the literature of the Ergonomics domain. Empirical tests with users and simple optimization criteria have been used to propose new solutions. On the contrary, very few papers in Operations Research have addressed this optimization problem. In this paper we firstly resume the most relevant problems in keyboard design, enlightening the related Ergonomics aspects. Then we concentrate on keyboards that must be used with a single finger or stylus, like that of portable data assistant, smartphones and other small devices. We show that the underlying optimization problem is a generalization of the well-known quadratic assignment problem (QAP). We recall some of the most effective metaheuristic algorithms for QAP and we propose some non-trivial extensions to the keyboard design problem. We compare the new algorithms through computational experiments with instanc...

Abstract We present a new 4-key text entry method that, unlike most few-key methods, is gestural instead of selection-based. Importantly, its gestures mimic the writing of Roman letters for high learnability. We compare this new 4-key method to predominant 3-key and 5-key methods theoretically using KSPC and empirically using a longitudinal study of 5 subjects over 10 sessions. The study includes an evaluation of the 4-key method without any on-screen visualization-an impossible condition for the selection-based methods.

Keyboarding is a staple in school curricula. In the past, it has been taught at the middle school and high school levels by business teachers. It has been a separate course which involved learning the motoric skills of typing as well as formatting skills in writing reports and various forms of correspondence (Erthal, 1998; Rogers, 2006). Today the majority of school districts introduce students to keyboarding basics in elementary school. Teaching keyboarding/typing in the elementary classroom is nothing new.

In this study, we evaluated the effects of key spacing on a conventional computer keyboard on typing speed, percentage error, usability, and forearm muscle activity and wrist posture. International standards that specify the spacing between keys on a keyboard have been guided primarily by design convention because few studies have evaluated the effects of key spacing on productivity, usability, and biomechanical factors. Experienced male typists (N = 37) with large fingers (middle finger length > or = 8.7 cm or finger breadth of > or = 2.3 cm) typed on five keyboards that differed only in horizontal and vertical key spacing (19 x 19 mm, 18 x 19 mm, 17 x 19 mm, 16 x 19 mm, and 17 x 17 mm) while typing speed, percentage error, fatigue, preference, extensor carpi ulnaris and flexor carpi ulnaris muscle activity, and wrist extension and ulnar deviation were recorded. Productivity and usability ratings were significantly worse for the keyboard with spacing of 16 x 19 mm compared with the other keyboards. Differences on these measures between the other keyboards were not significant. Muscle activity tended to increase in the left forearm and decrease in the right with decreasing horizontal key spacing. There was also a trend for left wrist extension to increase and left ulnar deviation to decrease with decreasing horizontal key spacing. Reducing vertical key spacing from 19 to 17 mm had no significant effect on productivity or usability ratings. The study findings support key spacing on a computer keyboard between 17 and 19 mm in both vertical and horizontal directions. These findings may influence keyboard standards and the design of keyboards.

Why the typing courses were created.

“I researched for many hours and tried many different typing programs with my children, but we never found a program that was a good fit. I wanted something that was beautiful and uplifting, not cartoon or arcade game style. I finally created my own program for my children, and they loved it. Now, we are sharing it with you. Studies have shown that simply viewing images of nature reduces stress, improves concentration, and elevates mood. Our typing courses contain beautiful watercolor nature scenes. In addition, the course integrates spelling and grammar principles. I believe the best way to teach children all subjects is in a way that helps them enjoy and appreciate learning for the beauty and meaning of it rather than teaching them through a video game style. We are excited to offer a ‘good and beautiful’ typing program for those who are looking for a course of this nature.”

English Typing Book PDF Free Download

English Typing Course book PDF with practice exercise for free download. An English typing course is a structured educational program designed to teach individuals how to type accurately and efficiently using the English language. Typing is an essential skill in today’s digital age, as it is widely used in various professional and personal settings, such as office work, communication, data entry, and more. A step by step guide to qualify the typing test for SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS competitive exams.

English Typing Book

English typing courses book PDF cover the following aspects:

  • Keyboard Familiarization: The course begins with introducing students to the standard QWERTY keyboard layout. Students learn the positions of all the keys, including letters, numbers, punctuation, and special characters.
  • Touch Typing: Touch typing is a core focus of English typing courses. Students are trained to type without looking at the keyboard, relying on muscle memory to locate and press the keys accurately. This method increases typing speed and reduces errors.
  • Key Placement: Students are taught the correct finger placement on the keyboard. This involves assigning specific fingers to particular rows and keys, ensuring efficient and ergonomic typing.
  • Accuracy and Speed: English typing courses emphasize the development of both speed and accuracy. Students practice typing exercises and passages to improve their words-per-minute (WPM) count while maintaining precision.
  • Typing Techniques: Various techniques are taught, such as the “home row” method and methods for reaching the top and bottom rows of keys. These techniques help students achieve a balance between speed and accuracy.
  • Touch-Typing Drills: Typing drills, which include words, sentences, and paragraphs, are used to enhance typing skills. These drills often encompass real-world scenarios, such as business letters, reports, and emails.
  • Special Characters and Symbols: Students learn to type special characters, symbols, and numeric keys accurately and efficiently, as these are frequently used in different documents and applications.
  • Error Correction: Courses include strategies for error correction. Students are taught how to proofread their work and make corrections efficiently.
  • Typing Tests: Regular typing tests are conducted to assess students’ progress. These tests measure typing speed, accuracy, and proficiency.
  • Typing Software: Many English typing courses use specialized typing software that provides interactive lessons, drills, and performance tracking. Some software programs also offer fun and engaging typing games.
  • Certification: Some typing courses offer certification upon completion. These certificates can be valuable in job applications, particularly for roles that require data entry or typing proficiency.
  • Online and Offline Options: English typing courses are available both online and through traditional classroom instruction. Online courses offer flexibility and self-paced learning, while traditional classes provide a structured learning environment.
