If you buy something from the links on this page, we may earn a commission. Why Trust Us?

Getting on board with using a planner might be quite the task, as most of us are used to clicking and tapping our notes into digital devices, like iPads and smartphones . Luckily for you, we've rounded up the best academic planners to transform even the most tech-obsessed person into a planner pro. From agendas designed to optimize your academic life to options that keep track of busy school and extracurricular schedules, these planners will help start the school year off right.

Planner 2023-2024

Planner 2023-2024

This student planner combines old-school sophistication with modern convenience. The cover design is classically minimal, with an elastic-band closure and pen holder at the spine to keep everything neatly together.

The interior page layout is similarly straightforward, offering weekly and monthly page views with plenty of lined and blank space to write, cross out, and rewrite. The design is unobtrusive, allowing for students to mold it to fit their needs. It's easy to follow with enough direction to keep students on-task, and it's durable enough that if it gets thrown around — which it definitely will — it won't fall apart partway through the year. Overall, the combination of style, durability, and price makes this student planner our number-one pick.

Dated Bilingual Middle High School Student Planner

Dated Bilingual Middle High School Student Planner

Bilingual English and Spanish planners are wonderful for really any child in the U.S. but especially good for Spanish speakers and Spanish learners. The planner has plenty of guidance as to what to put where and plenty of space in which to do it. It's also a great option for middle school students!

2023-2024 Academic Planner

2023-2024 Academic Planner

At-a-Glance planners are favorites of teachers I spoke with because they aren't distracting, but they're also very guided and have plenty of room. Even if your child decides to use markers in it, the pages don't bleed like some thinner-papered planners. These lay flat, allowing the student to look at everything at a glance.

Student Planner 2023-2024

Student Planner 2023-2024

A big part of why this one will be so popular is because of the design on the outside — celestial images are hot right now. But what's inside is even more important, and you'll find a well-laid out planer with 380 stickers, goal areas, weekly, daily, and monthly spaces ready to be filled out.

2023-2024 Monthly Planner

2023-2024 Monthly Planner

If you need to motivate your student, gifting them a package like this is a wonderful way to do it. It has everything a kid could want for planning, pens, stickers, tabs, and a design that's alluring even for the planner-shy.

Again, it has weekly, daily, and monthly spaces with great paper and lines that aren't too close together.

2023-24 Monthly & Weekly Academic Planner Kit

2023-24 Monthly & Weekly Academic Planner Kit

There's so much to love about this extremely durable zippered planner starting with the fact that it's not just an undated planner — it's an entire planner system.

Useful school supplies like fine-liner pens, sticky notes, tabs, note stickers, and highlighters are all included. That means that you can color-code by program or activity, highlight deadlines, coordinate your needs, and get everything put down exactly when you need to begin because you are the one filling in the date.

It helps break big goals into smaller tasks and lets users get as granular as they'd like with long-term planning. This means that you can plan their semester by the week, month, or the whole chunk.

The best part is that the cloud-integrated planner is totally reusable, as users can jot down tasks and notes with the smudge-proof pen, scan them with the compatible app, and erase the notes with the included cloth. It'll likely be the only planner-and-notebook combo that you'll ever need.

What to Consider

black line break

Choosing the right planner for the right person is no small task, especially for college students dealing with the beginning of their life as an adult. There's a lot to jot down when you consider work and school schedules that include not only term-long projects but also goals for the future, grade calculations, and important notes about prerequisites and scheduling. Planners are pretty individual things, so check in with your kid about their preferred style. My own 15-year-old son prefers to have a larger planner with more room because he's visually inclined in that way, but my 12-year-old daughter is just the opposite. Her planner is precise, but notebooks are for figuring things out.

A good student planner should have space not only for assignments but also for schedules, notes, and important email addresses and numbers, such as the At a Glance planner . It's also a good idea to give yourself the option of having multiple views of the dates — a month at a glance, a week, and a daily breakdown. It's not 100% necessary, but it is extremely useful. You also want your student planner to be durable, just like the Feela planner system , because planners get pretty beaten up over time. Think about it — they're thrown in backpacks , tossed into desk drawers, and even jammed into lockers, so they need to stand up to some knocking around. Flimsy is fine for something that stays at home but not for an academic planner that needs to travel.

Maintaining a day planner for school can help you complete all of your assignments on time. Once you’ve chosen the type of planner you want, create sections for each subject and fill in all the information you already have. Each day you can look at what’s on the agenda and add any new information. Color-coding your planner and making sure to add all types of events and obligations will help you stay on top of all your tasks.

Setting Up Your Planner

Step 1 Choose the right planner for you.

  • There are different types of planners with different layouts. Some also have smaller sections while others have larger. Choose one that suits you the best.
  • If your planner is too plain, consider decorating it.
  • If you can't buy a planner, check out How to Make Your Own School Planner .

Step 2 Create sections for every subject/course you take.

  • Keep your classes organized by day. For example, if you have Math and Science on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, put those sections next to each other.

Step 3 Create a section for other events.

  • Consider creating separate sections for school-related activities and extracurricular activities. For example, a school ball game could be in one section and a concert in another.

Step 4 Add birthdays and holidays.

  • You don't need to write in every single birthday--just focus on your friends and family. If you plan on doing something special on that day, such as a party, make a quick note of it.

Writing in Your Planner

Step 1 Decide which method you will use.

  • If you write things down on the day they were assigned, this will enable you to look at each day to see what you should be working on (e.g., If reading chapter 5 was assigned on Monday, you would write it down under Monday’s space and do the assignment that day).
  • If you write things down on the day they are due, you will need to look ahead to see what you should be working on (e.g., If reading chapter 5 needs to be completed Wednesday, you would write it down under Wednesday’s space but look ahead on Monday or Tuesday in order to complete the assignment by Wednesday).

Step 2 Make your planner a part of your daily routine.

  • Some teachers like to write out assignments weeks ahead of time. If your teacher does this, you can transfer these assignments to your planner.
  • Once you develop the habit of checking your planner, you may no longer need reminders, such as sticky notes on the mirror.

Step 3 Fill in things as soon as you find out about them.

  • If you tend to procrastinate, consider putting reminders into your planner. For example, you can write "Start working on Shakespeare essay" the week before it is due.

Step 4 Create your own deadlines.

  • Monday: start research
  • Wednesday: complete outline
  • Friday: write rough draft

Staying Organized

Step 1 Color code your planner.

  • You can do this with colored pencils, pens, highlighters, or even colorful sticky-note flags.

Step 2 Look ahead.

  • For example, if you have a lot of exams or a large essay due during a particular week, it might not be a good idea to schedule other things, like parties.

Step 3 Review your planner before you start your homework.

  • Start with assignments that are due the following day. If you have extra time that evening, you could do the other assignments to get ahead of schedule.
  • If none of your assignments are due yet, consider doing the easiest ones first to get them out of the way. Alternatively, you could try doing the hardest one first.

Step 4 Keep old pages.

  • Some people like to fold the old pages of their planners towards the spine. This will create bulk, but it will also make it easier to find the newest page.

How to Use a Daily School Planner

Published: Jan 29, 2021 by Heidi . This post may contain affiliate links 22 Comments

Do your kids use school planners?  All my kids use them to keep track of daily homework, but I know they can be used for so much more -- especially in the upper grades.  Today I'm sharing six tips for how to use a daily school planner to organize your after-school time. With parents and kids working together to get these tips started, I'm confident that there will be fewer missed assignments and late-night cramming!  (At least I sure hope so!  Last year about killed me!)

How to Use a Daily School Planner {Tips I Wish Were Taught at School} #backtoschool

How to Use a Daily School Planner -- Back to School Tips!

RELATED: 12 Back-to-School Tips for a Fantastic First Day , How to Make Friends

 1.  Write down due dates!

This is the main thing that I wish teachers would teach the kids.  Currently, my kids write down their assignments that are due the next day, but that is all.  I can't tell you how many times I've asked the date of a test--only to get a blank stare in return!

So, when the teacher gives long-term assignment, write down the due date!

2.  Set your own deadlines

How to Use a Daily School Planner {Tips I Wish Were Taught at School} #backtoschool

Simply writing down a due date for a paper or test is not enough.  It's easy to procrastinate when the due date is far away.  Once you have your final due dates written in your planner, it's time to set your own deadlines for studying and writing.

For an essay or report, divide the assignment up into reasonable chunks.  Here's a sample schedule for a paper assigned on Monday and due on Friday:

  • Monday--Outline and write the introduction.
  • Tuesday--Write the body paragraphs.
  • Wednesday--Write the Conclusion.
  • Thursday--Revise and edit.  Type the final paper.

Preparing for a test is a little bit different, because you will likely be learning new material up until the day of the test.  You might add some phrases like this to your regular daily assignments:

  • Review class notes
  • Complete end-of-unit review
  • Get someone to quiz me on vocabulary

3.  Schedule a family calendaring time each week

Imagine this . . . all week, you planned to finish writing your essay on Thursday night.  You arrive home from school that day to find out that your family has planned to go to dinner with your favorite aunt.  Now you have to choose between a fun family event and completing your homework.  Bummer.  Nothing ruins your study plans like unexpected plans!

Set aside a time each week that your family will come together and plan.  At the meeting, everyone brings their calendar or school planner and shares what's on their schedule for the week.   Don't forget to include your sports, lessons, and other activities in your planner.  That will help you know which days you have less time to study.

4. Review your planner before starting your homework

It's no fun to think you have completed your homework only to bolt up in the middle of the night -- realizing that your forgot something!  Before you begin studying, check your planner to make sure that you make time to complete all of your tasks.

5. Include your personal goals in your planner

If there is a skill you are trying to learn, a habit you are trying to break, or a goal your are striving to achieve, your planner can help you!  Write down daily reminders and things to keep you motivated!

For example, my oldest is trying to read her scriptures every day for a specific amount of time.  If she writes that in her planner, and sees it as she starts her homework, she's much more likely to remember.

6. Let Mom and Dad help you get started

Does using your planner this way sound a little scary?  No worries.  Mom and Dad can help.  Once you have those first school assignments, grab your planner, a pencil and a parent.  Together, decide how to break your large assignments into smaller chunks.  Let Mom or Dad know what tasks you will need their help with.  Is there anything you need to do together?  Is there anything you need to buy for a project? (This could also be a great discussion during family calendaring time.)

If you didn't get all the due dates written down, have Mom or Dad check their email.  Often, teachers send weekly newsletters that contain spelling lists, due dates, and other important information.

Planning will get easier as you do it.  Soon, you won't need your parents' help very often at all!

What do you think? Will you change the way you use your school planner? What's your best planner tip? I'd love it if you shared it in the comments.

Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you'll stick around and check out some of my other ideas. Images below are linked.

Thanks, Amy. I hope it helps them. There's so much a kid can do if they know how to plan!

I LOVE planners. Used to be an English teacher before having kids, and I taught using planners to my freshmen. So important. I'm struggling right now on teaching my Kindergartener how to use one or if it's too early. What do you think? We already have a family planner/calendar that is on the wall.

August 14, 2014 at 12:01 pm

My kids had planners in kindergarten, but they were only used to write down the daily assignments and spelling words so that the parents knew what the kids should be doing. I think they mainly work best that young for writing practice and as a communication tool with parents. I'm not saying don't teach her, but I don't think they have much they need to organize yet. Thanks for teaching the freshmen! I wish they started sooner. Good luck with your kiddos.

Thanks for the input. :)

Great tips! Last year, my 4th grade son had a test calendar, or at least he was supposed to. The teacher didn't seem to keep up on giving the kids the monthly calendars. I love the idea of adding reminders for the steps for the bigger projects in the daily planner.

August 25, 2014 at 9:23 pm

I think the planners are a great idea in school. I also think that the kids need to be trained a little better as to how to use them, though! I'm glad to see that my 7th grader is using hers better this year--even without my tips. Yeah, teachers!

August 25, 2014 at 3:51 pm

Fortunately, our Area schools provide planners for the kids from k5 all the way to 12th grade-- it's helped my boys keep organized every years and keeps me informed, too. As a mom, I have my own planner too-- great way to pace yourself and keep everyone on the same 'page' :)

August 25, 2014 at 9:24 pm

The kids in our school get free planners, too. I just wish they were taught to use them more effectively. I'm happy to see that my daughter is learning to use hers better this year in 7th grade. I need to do better at keeping my own planner, too! It definitely helps keep the family organized.

August 26, 2014 at 8:07 am

Great tips that can be applied for adults or kids!

August 27, 2014 at 10:01 am

That's right, Heather. I need to use some of these tips for myself!

August 27, 2014 at 7:03 pm

I found my sons planners years later, totally blank. At my daughters school they check them each week to make sure they are filled out and I have signed them daily

August 29, 2014 at 8:29 pm

I have to sign my kids' planners, too. I love that your son's planners were blank. Typical boy! He seems to have made it through, anyway!

August 29, 2014 at 2:13 pm

Another great tip Heidi,thanks!

August 29, 2014 at 8:30 pm

You're welcome, Megan. I hope you have a great weekend!

August 31, 2014 at 10:31 am

Brilliant tips - especially the one about setting your own deadlines. It's no good realising something is due tomorrow but it's going to take a week to complete it!

September 23, 2014 at 12:36 pm

Thanks, Clare. If only I could get it through to my 12-year-old that projects take more than one night! Actually, the planner is helping. Things are getting much better.

August 13, 2015 at 9:56 am

I love the idea of kids using planners - it would make our lives so much easier. Thank you for sharing such great tips. Cathy

August 13, 2015 at 10:09 am

Thanks, Cathy. I love that my kids get planners at school, but it takes some work for them (and for me) to really use them correctly. My oldest is in middle school this year, so we really need to get this down!

Hey Donna

Daily Planner for School

by Donna 1 Comment

Sharing is caring!

Staying organized for school can be tricky for younger students. This year may be especially difficult with all of the changes that our students are facing. Parents are faced with many big decisions to make and children may feel uneasy about it all. This Daily Planner for School will help your student stay organized and up-to-date with their studies, homework, and reminders. Plus, the Daily Review section will give your child an opportunity to process their feelings and remember to be grateful during a very different school year. These printable planner pages are great if you are doing school at home this year too!

Daily Student Planner printable in color.

The beginning of the school year is here. While this time of year inevitably brings with it some sense of anxiety, this year certainly offers a bit more than others. Our children are probably both excited and nervous to be returning to school and I think it goes without saying that parents are feeling the weight of it all too.

Adults, typically, have gained some experience dealing with stressful situations which allows us to better process some of these difficult emotions and remain productive. Children, on the other hand, have yet to gain these important skills and may struggle.

As parents, we play a huge role in developing our children’s ability to be resilient, organized, and focused. Those skills are more relevant this year than perhaps any other before. So how can we help them through this difficult time?

It goes without saying that younger students are far less self-aware than, say, high school students. They are also still learning the executive functioning skills required for self-organization and task management. Because of this, it can be more difficult for younger children to stay organized and to identify and vocalize big feelings.

In developing printable daily planner pages for kids, my goal was to help with establishing organization skills. Keeping track of things like homework, projects, and other to-dos are an obvious starting point but, considering the current state of things, I felt compelled to dive a little deeper than that.

Helping your Child Process Big Feelings

Academics and organization are obviously very important, but I wanted a way to offer our younger students the opportunity to share their feelings in a way that becomes a part of their daily routine as well.

To do this, I have added a section to these printable academic planner pages that includes a section helping them to easily identify their mood as well as a daily journaling section with prompts for further thought and daily gratitude.

The goal is to teach them to effectively communicate their feelings, identify both difficult and positive aspects of their day, and to provide them a reminder to be thankful. While there are prompts to identify struggles within their day, the end-goal is to inspire positivity and reflection.

In times like these, it can be hard to see the good in the more difficult days. Whether you are an adult or a child, taking a few moments of your day to reflect can be a simple but effective way to unpack and process those feelings.

These printable daily planner pages will allow you to sit with your child to review academic responsibilities and tasks like homework and upcoming projects while also providing the opportunity for dialogue around feelings, gratitude, and successes.

Help your Student with School Organization

In the Assignment section, students can track homework assignments for each class. This section is intended for items due the next day or items that will be worked on immediately (any items on this list that are not completed should be moved to the next day when possible so that they are not accidentally overlooked or forgotten). Here is an example of how this might look:

daily school planner

Next is the Study section. This is where your student can list any upcoming tests or quizzes that require additional study. Subjects that require extra attention should be written each day up to the event to maximize study time.

Under that is the Reminders section. This is a helpful spot to note upcoming events, materials and books needed to complete homework and study assignments, or even reminders to bring musical instruments or sports equipment for after school activities.

Daily Planner for School

The Notes section is for any additional information, thoughts, or questions that may need to be documented/ remembered.

The Daily Review

On the right, you will see some emoji faces. This is your child’s Daily Review section.

At the top of this section, you will see a mood rating scale using smiley faces. This is a very basic mood identifier including happy, very happy, meh, a little sad, very sad, and angry. The child can circle, check, or even color in the one that best reflects their mood. Parents can review these emotions with their children and identify any patterns or extended periods of difficulty.

Daily Planner for School

Daily Journaling Prompts

Beneath that section, you will find the Journaling space. I have included some prompts to help young students think about their day and feelings. You will notice that the majority of them are focused on the positive aspects of the day. This is meant to increase their focus on the positive. Of course, difficult feelings should never be overlooked and students are also offered the opportunity to discuss the harder parts of their day.

The last prompt is to write down something that they are grateful for. Practicing daily gratitude has been proven in increasing a positive mindset and reducing stress. That is certainly beneficial for individuals of all ages.

Help your Child get in the Habit of Using this Printable.

Printables are great but unless it’s used it’s not very helpful.

We have a pretty good system and routine for after school. Our children are expected to empty their lunch boxes, get dressed, and take out their homework. This is a great time to check in with your student and review their Daily Planner. Add this to your Afterschool Routine (you can find my free afterschool routine printable here.) When reviewing the planner page note any sections that were difficult for your student to complete and help them understand. Talk about their feelings for the day if they were struggling. Keep it short and simple. Sometimes just asking a simple question like: “what made today a really great day?” is enough to get the conversation started.

Student life can be a wild ride, right?

Homework, assignments, class schedules, upcoming exams – it’s like a never-ending rollercoaster. But guess what? We have solutions for you.

Here are the 10 best planner apps for students, tested and approved, to help you conquer the chaos and ride that rollercoaster like a pro.

Say goodbye to missed deadlines and hello to seamless planning and efficient time management. Let’s dive right in!

I. How to choose the best student planner app for your needs

Here are 4 key factors to consider:

1. Free Version. Money matters, especially for us students. Look for free planner apps with generous feature offerings.

2. User-Friendly Interface. A good student planner app should help you get stuff done, not get lost in itself. Look for apps with clear navigation menus and well-designed icons.

3. Feature Set. Think about what’s essential for your study style, and check if the app has what you need – calendars, to-do lists, collaboration, compatibility with other productivity apps! And hey, the ability to personalize it with categories and labels is a plus.

4. Cross-Platform Compatibility . Make sure your app plays well with the devices you’re frequently using.

We noticed most students are glued to their mobile devices these days, so most planner apps we recommend below are available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

II. 10 Best Planner Apps for Students for 2024

Organized Chaos for Year-Round Family Fun

Printable School Planner (Updated for 2023-24)

Use this printable school planner to organize your schedule for the 2023-2024 academic year – perfect for teachers, and students.

Printable school planner 2023-2024.

Disclosure : This blog contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, Keri Houchin earns a commission from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you.

After a few years of readers asking for a school year version of my annual printable planner, I’m thrilled to be able to share this printable school planner that you can print and assemble at home.

You can build your own planner and customize it to fit your needs, or download the print-ready planner for the fastest way to get started!

This post has been updated for the 2023-2024 academic year.

And the design for this year’s school planner is (mostly) new! I took inspiration from school planner layouts I’ve created in the past and my printable planner. The only page with dates is the cover, so you can download the pages once and use them for many years.

Extra school planner pages

If you’d rather mix and match with other planner printables, I have lots of different page layouts!

  • Keep an academic calendar in the front of your planner for a quick reference for all the important dates.
  • If you prefer, grab these weekly pages spread across 2 pages. I’ve designed pastel weekly pages and black and white weekly pages .
  • These monthly planner pages are a full-page calendar across 2 pages. There is also a vertical calendar version and a horizontal calendar version.
  • Teens and adults will love these reading journal pages !

School planner

Okay, let’s take a look inside my 2023-24 school planner. It’s perfect for teachers and students!

The cover is dated 2023-2024 and has space to write in your name. I love color, but I hate using too much ink, so it’s pretty – but also simple.

Rainbow school planner cover dated 2023-2024 and space to write your name.

One of the most important pages in this planner is the schedule. It has space for your weekly classes, plus any regular activities you have each weekday.

School schedule grid with horizontal sections colored by rainbow.

Year at-a-glance

The year-at-a-glance is similar to my academic calendar, but all the boxes are empty so you can fill them in with anything. I’ve used these for holidays, birthdays, or other big events.

Academic year at a glance with boxes for 12 months from August to July.

Assignments and exams tracker

Use these pages to keep track of daily homework, big projects, and all the tests.

Exam schedule and assignment tracker pages with gridlines for tracking the class, test/due date, and details.

Reading log

I’ve got a few different bookish printables, but I thought I’d include a reading log with this planner because it’s so handy!

Rainbow grid reading log with columns for date, time, title, and author.

Daily and weekly plan

If you’ve got a busy day it can be handy to break your schedule down by the hour. This page also has space for a to-do list and notes.

For a little less detail, use the weekly page to write down important things for each day, including weekends.

School planner pages for a daily plan with hourly schedule and to-do list and a weekly plan with a box for each day.

Monthly pages

There are 12 monthly calendar pages. Each month is a different color and they’re not dated, so you can use them year after year.

If you prefer the pages to already be dated for the current year, check out my January to December printable planner .

One-page vertical calendar pages with boxes but not dates.

Whether you use all of the school planner pages or just a few, I hope you find them helpful for getting organized this year!

Get the printables

You can grab this school planner below. It’s a PDF bundle that includes 20 different pages.

How Do You Make & Use a Daily Planner?

Making your daily planner is not only easy but it is also fun, so let’s focus on that for a few minutes. 🙂

If you’d like to make a daily schedule template, you can do it in three ways – buy a calendar with a daily schedule, create your own planner in a notebook or on separate pieces of paper, or use one of many templates available online.

People use daily schedule templates in many ways to organize different areas of life:

  • A productivity planner to improve efficiency at work and track progress.
  • Meal planners to introduce a healthy diet and feel better.
  • Daily class schedule template for teachers and students to plan the syllabus and keep a record of homework assignments.

You can also opt for a dedicated app, but there’s nothing better than the smell of fresh paper!

Overall, creating a daily planner template is not difficult. You can also attach sticky notes, stickers, drawings, and additional items to keep important notes visible.
