Boston Public Library's Homework Help Begins at Locations Across the City

The program, offered Monday through Thursday from 3:30 -5:30 p.m. is open to students in grades K-8; no registration required.

Boston Public Library’s free Homework Help program is underway and runs through May 25, 2017, offering free afterschool help and mentorship provided by high-achieving high school students. The program, offered Monday through Thursday from 3:30 -5:30 p.m. is open to students in grades K-8; no registration required. Boston Teacher’s Union tutors are also available during select weekdays from 4-6 p.m. for students in grades K-12. Visit  www.bpl.org/homework  for complete information.

“Homework Help is an essential resource offered to Boston’s youth to encourage learning in a safe, welcoming environment, and we are immensely grateful to Harvard University for their training support of the high school mentors who implement the program throughout our locations,” said David Leonard, President of the Boston Public Library.

Boston Public Library began collaborating with Harvard University to provide SmartTALK training to Homework Help mentors in 2014. Since its launch in 2008, SmartTALK has worked to help adequately prepare and train educators and mentors in Cambridge and Boston to help children of all ages develop strong academic and social skills outside of school hours.

“Homework help gives students the confidence they need to become critical thinkers and to develop their skills in a supportive setting, and libraries will always be a place that children can turn to for educational assistance,” said Farouqua Abuzeit, Manager of Youth Services for the Boston Public Library.

Online help is also available through  LearningExpress Library , which can help students from grade school through college improve their skills by taking practice tests, completing exercises, and reading e-books. LearningExpress can also help college-bound students prepare for the ACT, SAT, and other standardized tests. Students may also search for articles and use books online with  student electronic resources , and look for book, CDs, movies, and more in the  BPL catalog .

Boston Public Library has a Central Library, twenty-four branches, map center, business library, and a website filled with digital content and services. Established in 1848, the Boston Public Library has pioneered public library service in America. It was the first large free municipal library in the United States, the first public library to lend books, the first to have a branch library, and the first to have a children’s room. Each year, the Boston Public Library hosts thousands of programs and serves millions of people. All of its programs and exhibitions are free and open to the public. At the Boston Public Library, books are just the beginning. To learn more, visit  bpl.org .

Boston Public Library starting free virtual homework help program for school year

The Boston Public Library has announced that it is starting up a free homework help program, to be held virtually over Zoom, for the upcoming school year.

The Homework Assistance Program, formerly known as Homework Help, will start Sept. 21 and run through May 14. It takes place Mondays through Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and is open to all students in kindergarten through eighth grade on a drop-in basis, according to a news release.

Trained high-achieving high school students offer homework help and mentorship through the program, the library said.

“As we embark on an unprecedented school year, BPL is dedicated to helping Boston students succeed,” BPL President David Leonard said. “HAP is designed to open up a supportive dialogue between mentors and mentees, bridge the digital divide to provide accessible homework support, and create a welcoming environment for younger students as they navigate these unique times.”

The 56 homework assistance mentors, who are in grades 10, 11 and 12, will work with mentees on school assignments. As social distancing continues, they will also provide support and advice for younger students as they transition to virtual and hybrid learning models, the statement said.

Boston Public Schools is starting the school year remotely . Families can opt into a hybrid learning plan starting in October.

“BPS is incredibly appreciative of our partners at the Boston Public Library for facilitating the Homework Assistance Program, which allows some of our older BPS students to mentor, support and assist our younger learners during this very different and often challenging period in their education,” BPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius said. “The neighborhood-based approach to this program will help to build community, will foster stronger relationships among our students, and allows further sharing of virtual learning skills and resources within the community.”

Zoom calls for each Boston neighborhood will be held to reach students across the city, allowing them to meet the mentors they would work with during the program. The Zoom groups are: Group 1: Brighton, Honan-Allston, East Boston, South End; Group 2: Connolly, Egleston Square, Parker Hill, Roxbury; Group 3: Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Mattapan, West Roxbury; and Group 4: Codman Square, Fields Corner, Grove Hall, Lower Mills, Uphams Corner. Links to Zoom calls will be available online on Sept. 21.

The Worcester Public Library has also announced a virtual tutoring program for this year.

🔸BPLF Staff Highlight🔸 Paula Sakey, Executive Director Best part of your role? I have always loved libraries. My father-in-law oversaw the Cambridge, Massachusetts, public libraries for over 20 years, and my husband has his MLIS. I knew early on that libraries were more than books and played a critical role in connecting people to community, resources, technology, and so much more. When I had the opportunity to grow the philanthropic arm of the Boston Public Library, I was so excited to be able to build a team and work with our colleagues in the library to raise private support for this essential and iconic institution that serves the entire city of Boston. Favorite lunch spot? Honestly, I usually bring my lunch, but when I don`t, I love the Central Library’s Newsfeed Café soups and sandwiches. Favorite project you have worked on? Do I have to pick one? I’d say being able to support innovative roles in the Library through philanthropy such as our Entrepreneur-in-Residence, new Chef-in-Residence, career counselors, ESOL instructors and positions within our new Boston Community History Project. E-book or Paper Cover? I’m big into E and audio books and LOVE the Libby app! All my books are borrowed through my BPL card! Pictured: Left, Paula Sakey with Ibram X. In this role, Glorya will work to increase nutritional literacy and cooking programs for community members of all ages. This new initiative will empower patrons to explore cooking techniques, cultural heritage, nutrition, and Boston history by offering demonstrations, hands-on classes, and resources. We are excited to see all the great things she will accomplish and a special thanks to our anonymous donors for generously funding this role.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Victoria District Curriculum

The math curriculum seeks to develop a range of mathematical thinking skills in students. By the time students begin high school, they will have been introduced to proportional reasoning, operations using whole numbers, fractions and integers, linear relations and the quantitative connections they represent, the ability to make sense of 3D objects, and data collection and representation. When students are in high school, they will be able to apply these to lessons in statistics and their practical uses, geometry and its use in design, and the math that underlies technological innovation.

The English language arts curriculum helps students master the language and develop an appreciation for literature. Word study is important throughout the school years, and students go from mastering words to being able to grasp the nuances in language and works of literature. Through reading, students are expected to broaden their ability to think critically, make connections, and express ideas that emerge from the text through discussion or presentation. Another goal of the English language arts curriculum is to develop inquiry and reflection skills while deepening students understanding of self and society.
