Listening activities for songs
Here are some tried and tested ideas when listening to a pop song.
Activities need not require hours of preparation time and some of the best activities are spontaneous and simple. Below are a few suggestions. They are categorised into pre-listening, while listening and after listening activities.
Pre-listening activities
- Give students the title of the song and ask them to predict words and phrases that they expect to hear.
- Give students the words of a song with an 'either/or' choice for certain words in each line. Students choose which word is more likely in each case and then listen and check if they were correct.
- Dictate a list of words which appear in the song in a random order, and add one extra word which doesn't appear. Students write the words then listen to the song, ticking off the words as they hear them, to discover which was the extra word.
While listening activities
- Students listen and delete extra words which they do not hear.
- Students listen and fill gaps (open cloze or multiple choice).
- Students listen, draw a picture to represent what they hear and then explain their pictures in small groups.
After listening activities
- Students listen to a song and make a note of six to eight words that they hear. Then they use these words as the basic vocabulary for composing a poem in pairs. It doesn't need to be a serious poem, they can make it humorous or corny!
- Students write another verse for the song in pairs or small groups.
- Students brainstorm all of the words that they think they heard and then listen again and check to see how many are correct.

Improve listening skills
Dear Ms. Katherine Bilsborough My name is Khasanova Shahzoda, I am from Uzbekistan, this country is located in Central Asia. I really admired your article, experimenting with your strategy, I improved my listening skill. I think this strategy can be used when you are free and not limited in time, why do I think so? In many educational institutions, lessons last 45 maximum 50 minutes, and if there are 25-30 students in each class, then as a teacher can check the work of all students during this time, I personally could not meet this time. Therefore I think you don't need to categorize them, you can just take one part and explain it well. However, your article is very helpful. Thus how do you think it is possible to combine all the categories and meet the time? Thanks for your reply. Sincerely, future teacher Khasanova Shahzoda

SONG PIECES 5! A FUN LISTENING ACTIVITY WITH MULTIPLE SONGS FOR ONLINE TEACHING
SONG PIECES is back! By using various short song extracts, it injects fun to English language classes. It also works perfectly with online students creating interaction and collaboration between them to identify specific things in the lyrics, in a light yet memorable way.
SONG PIECES is fast-paced, and it provides extra energy and fun at any moment the teacher needs: Review, warm-up, consolidation, or as a simple reward activity
Description : In this ELT song-based activity, students work in teams (or individually), listen to 7 different short song extracts, and identify different grammar structures and vocabulary in each one.
INSTRUCTIONS
Step 1 .
Divide students into pairs or trios (it can also be done individually, depending on the number of students), and tell them they are going to listen to various extracts of songs and in each one they have to listen to different things and write them down on a blank sheet of paper.
Step 2.
Before playing each extract, say what you want the students to listen to and make sure they know it. In order to do that, ask them if they can give you examples of the words they must listen to.
Example : Students, in this first extract, you have to listen to a frequency adverb! Do you remember what this is? Give me some examples.
Step 3 .
Tell them they have 3 chances to try to get the right word. Then, play the first extract 3 times and they write down the answer for number 1.
Step 4 .
Check what the teams wrote down (you can use the chat feature of the application you’re using with your online students. ex: in-meeting chat in zoom , and ask them to use it to send you the answers. Assign points. (1 for each right word, if there is more than 1 word in the recording)
Step 5.
Repeat steps 2, 3, 4 for the next song extracts. The team with more points, in the end, is the winner!
SUGGESTIONS OF THINGS TO BE FOUND IN EACH SONG EXTRACT:
(OBS: choose ONLY ONE of the suggestions for each song, according to your class level – of course, you can choose more – it all depends on your students)
