The American manual alphabet

For many deaf persons, the preferred mode of communication is American Sign Language (ASL). ASL is a very diverse and rich language, and is used by many deaf, hard-of-hearing and hearing people, not only in America, but also in other countries around the world. ASL has certainly gained popularity in the past few years, with such shows as “Switched at Birth”, which has non-hearing actors in it. Since ASL is the natural language of many deaf persons, they are usually grateful when others want to learn this language. There are some misconceptions and mistakes among the hearing that need to be addressed.

One issue among the hearing who study ASL is that they are not always taught the culture behind the language. Deaf culture is quite different from other cultures in such situations as asking appropriate questions or getting someone's attention.

To gain proficiency in ASL takes time, as it is a unique language that grows and changes over time, with new words that are always being incorporated into the vocabulary. The best way for you to improve your ASL is to practice, and to practice with deaf people. Learning from a book will only teach you vocabulary; communicating with a deaf person will teach you how and when to use the vocabulary and grammar correctly. Communication is both expressive and receptive.

CODA actor Daniel Durant performs Super Bowl national anthem in ASL with Reba McEntire singing

Durant signed "The Star-Spangled Banner" during the pre-game festivities.

Daniel Durant played a critical role in this year’s Super Bowl pre-game festivities.

The CODA actor performed the national anthem in American Sign Language (ASL), alongside Grammy-winner Reba McEntire as she sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Sharing the news on Instagram , Durant wrote that he was “excited and honored” about the impending performance, and thanked the National Association of the Deaf and NFL for making it happen.

This was just one of many performances that kicked off the 2024 Super Bowl, all of which included deaf performers joining the singers onstage. Additional pre-game festivities saw Post Malone singing “America The Beautiful,” with Anjel Piñero signing in ASL, and Andra Day handling vocals for "Lift Every Voice and Sing," a tune often dubbed the Black National Anthem, while Shaheem Sanchez signed along.

Sanchez will return to the stage later in the night when Usher headlines the Apple Music Super Bowl LVIII Halftime Show.

Durant is best known for roles in the Deaf West revival of  Spring Awakening and CODA , the emotional 2022 Best Picture winner about a musical girl who is the only hearing member of her family.

He recently competed on  Dancing With the Stars season 31, where he met his now-fiancee and then-dance partner , Britt Stewart. The duo, who began their relationship after being eliminated from the show, got engaged late last year. Durant also appeared on Switched at Birth, You, Chicago Med, and Florida Man.

ASL has its own grammar and structure in sentences that works differently from English. For plurals, verb inflections, word order, etc., learn grammar in the "ASL Learn" section. For search in the dictionary, use the present-time verbs and base words. If you look for "said", look up the word "say". Likewise, if you look for an adjective word, try the noun or vice versa. E.g. The ASL signs for French and France are the same. If you look for a plural word, use a singular word.

Generation 14plus Title ‘Elbow,’ From ‘Dil Leyla’ Director Aslı Ozarslan, Drills Down on Challenges Facing Young Immigrants

"Elbow"

Aslı Özarslan’s “Elbogen” (“Elbow”), an adaptation of Fatma Aydemir’s award-winning novel of the same name, tells the story of Hazal (played by Melia Kara), a young woman in Berlin struggling to find a job and start a life of her own. After a violent incident on her 18th birthday, she flees to Istanbul, a strange city in a country she doesn’t know and where she is forced to survive.

Produced by Jamila Wenske ‘s Berlin-based Achtung Panda!, the film premieres in the Berlinale’s Generation 14plus.

The Berlin native spoke with Variety about her new film and the challenges facing young people of immigrant backgrounds – something with which she is very familiar.

What interested you most about Fatma Aydemir’s novel?

It was clearly the character Hazal. She is neither a victim nor someone who does everything right. Her ambivalence, her rough edges and corners were very appealing to me, more than her environment. I saw in her a very smart girl who could analyze society with razor sharpness, but didn’t know what to do with it, except for the anger she felt, anger that she was not seen as a person.

It is a story that many people in Germany can relate to: growing up between cultures, not really belonging anywhere. Was this something you could identify with personally?

The point that you always have to prove yourself, especially at school. Some teachers have prejudices about young people with migration background and have little confidence in them.

There are studies that show that if you don’t have a German name you are rated worse at school or in training. It is harder to get a job or a flat. What is even sadder is that these people, who receive little support in their education, quickly lose their prospects.

The level of education in Germany is very dependent on the parental home. Society and schools must give young people, especially those from difficult financial backgrounds, the opportunity to dream and give them a chance. Otherwise they are pushed to the margins of society, even though they should form the core.

In what ways did your experience in documentary work inform the way you shot this film?

So we decided to stay visually close to her and not let the audience rest — that’s how Hazal feels, too. That is why it feels as if we are accompanying her in the most important steps as a young woman and from this the film develops its power.

There is a sense in the film that Hazal’s generation as a whole is dealing with serious problems, both in Germany and in Turkey …

Hazal’s generation is confronted with many different problems. The climate crisis, Europe’s treatment of migrants, new wars that are being sparked, which also have a lot to do with the people living here in Europe. There is the question of what kind of society you want to live in. Especially these days, when the young generation has many opportunities and freedom to express themselves, but at the same time they are threatened by backward and right-wing parties that want to determine which nationality or sexuality is right.

They are trying to find answers to all of this. Nevertheless, I feel that this generation is resilient and self-confident. They are emancipating themselves and trying to find their own way.

In Hazal’s case, it’s an unusual path; she twists her position of power in society. And we use that as a metaphor for our movie, as a ray of hope. This was important for me.

What made Melia Kara ideal for this role?

Melia is incredibly talented. I could feel the inner rage in her from the very first audition — an anger that the character Hazal absolutely needed. At the same time, there was also this vulnerability. She was able to intuitively translate what she personally brought with her and transferred it to the character. She wasn’t shy. I was very impressed by that. In the script and in the movie she is in every scene without exception.

How did you decide on the music, which includes an interesting mix of contemporary and Turkish songs?

The song by Kurdish artist Ahmet Kaya already played a role in the novel. It was incredibly important to me to include it, as he had to deal with massive racism in Turkey in his life and always stood up for himself.

The four best friends chose the song they dance to themselves. It’s “Von Party zu Party” by this brilliant female hip-hop duo, SXTN. When I asked the actresses what kind of music empowers them, they named this song. I love it!

The Turkish folk song I have known for years and it touches me a lot. I heard it again and again when I was developing ideas for the script. I wanted it to be in the film as a scene for Hazal so that she hears the song and to trigger something in her.

The score for the movie is by our great composer from France, Delphine Mantoulet. I sensed that she could relate to Hazal emotionally. We talked a lot about the instruments and Hazal’s inner life. It was inspiring to work with her.

What are you planning to work on next?

WORK: The American Sign Language (ASL) sign for: work / labor / employment (and related concepts)     The sign for "work" is made by shaping both hands into "fist shapes" (the letter "s.")  With your palms facing downward, use your dominant fist to tap the wrist or the side of your non-dominant fist a few times. WORK:               Memory Aid:   Think of working with a hammer.     While the sign "WORK" can (in context) be used to mean "job" -- there is a more common way of signing "job." See: JOB   The word "work" has meanings other than just "perform labor."  If you use work in sentences such as:  "That worked!" or "That works!" or "It didn't work!" -- what you really mean is "success," "succeed," or "satisfies a need." If you mean work as in "succeed" then use the sign: SUCCESS If you mean work as in "that works" -- as in that is satisfactory then use the sign for SATISFY If you mean work as in "that didn't work" you could use the sign FAIL     Notes:    You may see people doing variations of  the sign for work. For example you might see this variation. I don't recommend this variation. WORK ( not recommended version) Question : Why don't you recommend that version? Answer :  Because that version of the sign for work somewhat loosely resembles some of the characteristics of a sign that involves a three letter word that starts with "S" and ends with "X." To be clear, the above version of "work" is "not" a dirty or intimate sign regardless of what various juvenile individuals will try to tell you .  Just because two signs share the same basic location, orientation, and handshape doesn't mean that there are not additional significant differences in production (the way you sign it).  People who have not had enough real world experience signing and interacting with the Deaf community (or who learn sign language out of books or from not-so-good internet sources) tend to miss small (yet important) differences between signs and then spread garbage information. Don't be such a person.     Question : A student asks: Is the sign WORK made with "S" hands or "A" hands?   Answer : If a local teacher or Deaf person feels one way or another about it do it their way when you are around them. I recommend leaning toward the "S" handshape it is also common to see a modified "A" hand partway between an A and an S (particularly on the dominant hand, less so on the non-dominant hand which tends to be an "S"). Coarticulatory effects are real. In other words, signs done before and/or after a sign can and often do influence the handshape or other features of that sign. Example: IX GIRL WORK TOMORROW ("That girl will work tomorrow.") Since GIRL and TOMORROW use variants of the "A" handshape it is likely the sign WORK (in that sentence) will be influenced and exhibit an "A" handshape. If you signed: SOCIETY NORMS-(fs) CAN IMPACT WORK (social norms can impact work) ... -- the sign WORK would be more likely to use an "S" handshape.   [Keywords: Coarticulation, coarticulatory effects]     *  Want to help support ASL University?  It's easy :  DONATE   ( Thanks! ) *  Another way to help is to buy something from Dr. Bill's " Bookstore ." *  Want even more ASL resources?  Visit the " ASL Training Center ! Shaheem Sanchez, Deaf ASL performer, shines at Super Bowl halftime show

Marlee Matlin slams CBS after network failed to show ASL performers at Super Bowl

Marlee Matlin attends the 14th Governors Awards in Los Angeles on Jan. 9, 2024.

Actor Marlee Matlin slammed CBS on social media after the television network failed to show the American Sign Language (ASL) performers during the live broadcast of Super Bowl 58 .

The pregame show at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas featured performances from Andra Day, Post Malone and Reba McEntire. An ASL interpreter accompanied each artist.

Daniel Durant performed the national anthem in ASL with McEntire, while Anjel Piñero signed Malone's "America the Beautiful." Shaheem Sanchez worked with Day for her rendition of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and performed the ASL halftime show.

However, according to Matlin, CBS did not show the deaf performers once on television.

“I am absolutely SHOCKED @CBS for introducing the Deaf performers at today’s pregame #SuperBowl and then not showing even one second (or more) of their performance… as has been tradition for the last 30 years. WHY!?” Matlin posted on X .

Representatives for CBS did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday.

"Wholeheartedly agree," a user replied under the post. "@CBS you have the technology. USE IT to uphold your 'company values' as an inclusive organization or is that just on paper? Because how hard is it to present the ASL interpreters on screen?"

"I think it was absolutely ridiculous to introduce and not show the performers," another user wrote. "We all could learn so much by seeing them and we know they could easily do a split screen to show both at the same time!"

Matlin was the first deaf actor to win an Academy Award. She has been an advocate for the deaf community throughout her career, calling out companies for their lack of accessibility through social media.
