Irvine High School's Virtual Enterprise Team Success at NYC Competition
Irvine High School’s Virtual Enterprise team placed among the top 18 teams in the country during the Virtual Enterprise National Business Plan competition recently held in New York City. Virtual enterprise courses encourage budding entrepreneurs to create and run their own mock companies. Working under the guidance of a business partner, students write professional business plans, manage personnel needs, apply for financing and prepare oral and written sales pitches that are presented at state and regional competitions, where teams qualify for the annual national competition.
The Irvine High team is enrolled in the Entrepreneurship course, as part of IUSD’s Career Technical Education (CTE) program. Their company, named Kitastrophe, is an emergency preparedness kit company that aims to help ensure businesses, schools and families are “always prepared” for any natural disaster.
The Kitastrophe’s executive team consists of managers who represent various aspects of the company’s business operations. This includes:
· Elizabeth Jiang, Chief Financial Officer · Riddhi Kumar, Chief Executive Officer · Anders Lodin, Chief Operating Officer · Bala Janahan, Director of Marketing · Diego Valencia Rios, Director of Sales · Elias Sawary, Director of Human Resources · Shrey Gupta, Director of IT/Design
Teacher and Coach Gary Russel said, “This trip was an amazing experience for our students, who had the opportunity to learn from and compare their work with the top teams in the country. The atmosphere at the host site, Long Island University, was full of excitement with each team from around the nation doing final prep. Though the teams were competing head-to-head, there was comradery, networking, and support.”

Virtual Enterprise Wins State, Off to NYC

After placing in the top 8 at the state competition in Bakersfield, both San Juan Hills Virtual Enterprise teams have secured spots for the national competition held in New York this spring.

This year, both SJHHS Virtual Enterprise classes succeeded in several competitions, making it all the way to the state competition held in Bakersfield. On Jan. 28, both teams placed in the top 8 of the state competition, qualifying for the national competition held in New York this spring.
Virtual Enterprise is a hands-on class in the San Juan Hills Business Program where students come together to create a business and develop a product. Within the class, students have different roles and work together in several departments, simulating the environment of a real business.
“Students come together to create a business and they have to do everything, from coming up with a business idea to developing a product and a website. Then, they go compete with other high schools and different competitions while they try to sell their product,” said Virtual Enterprise director, Jeremy Wooten.
“My favorite part of Virtual Enterprise is the practical knowledge I have gained by participating in the program. We pitch business ideas, create a virtual company, draft our business plan, marketing plan, present elevator pitches, and compete against other virtual companies through trade shows,” said “Everlasting” CEO, senior Sam Gugliuzza.
The two Virtual Enterprise classes this year created the firms Everlasting and Tronic Bikes . The products designed by each business typically center around modern dilemmas such as environmental issues. “Everlasting” is a company that aims to eliminate food waste and maximize sustainability with smart fridges. The fridges are designed to track your food and send you new recipes or notifications when your food is going to expire. “Tronic Bikes” sells electric bikes, encouraging the use of cost efficient and environmentally friendly transportation.
Although the program has only been running for five years, winning big is nothing unfamiliar to the Virtual Enterprise stallions. In fact, in the past several years, they have had exceptional success.
“The year before last year, they won the state championships. They didn’t have a national competition due to Covid that year, but they ended up winning the Social Venture Challenge which they got a $10,000 scholarship from to share with four students. We’ve qualified for nationals the past three years,” said Mr. Wooten.
There’s nothing I would trade for the experiences and opportunities I have been given in this program. Starting our own business has taught me to appreciate all the details and hard work that is often overseen in the development of a company

At the moment, San Juan Hills is the only school in CAPOUSD that has a Virtual Enterprise program. Without a doubt, the class provides a unique opportunity for students to discover or pursue their interests in the realm of business while learning a lot and making meaningful memories.
“My favorite memories stem from the competitions and trade shows we have attended. Traveling to trade shows in Bakersfield and New York to compete against other high schools is an experience I will never forget,” said Gugliuzza.
The students are looking forward to their new competition in New York where they hope to have hard earned success and make more memories in the program.
“It’s a mixture of excitement, stress, and pride. There’s nothing I would trade for the experiences and opportunities I have been given in this program. Starting our own business has taught me to appreciate all the details and hard work that is often overseen in the development of a company. In Virtual Enterprise, I have seen first-hand the work that goes into everything from picking fonts and designing logos to filing corporate documents and finance balance sheets, and I have loved learning it all,” said “Everlasting” Chief Marketing Officer, senior Bailey Van Blarcom.

Virtual Enterprise’s Business Plan team qualifies for state competition
By Vivian Le, Arts & Entertainment Editor
On Monday, Dec. 11, Virtual Enterprise’s (VE) Business Plan team, consisting of seniors Colin McGlinchey, Monique Nguyen, Chloe Dinh, Cole Spalter and junior Vivian Le, traveled to the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) to present an overlook of their company Grow N’ Go to a panel of judges.
VE firms were to prepare a presentation regarding the following: marketing plan, financial plan, work environment and overall company. The team was graded on their opening statement, oral presentation, presentation design and ability to answer arbitrary questions.
“Before [the presentations], I was anxious since I kept messing up during rehearsal and practice sessions. But after taking a walk outside and relaxing myself, I felt more confident and did well at the presentation,” said Dinh, Co-Director of Marketing.
Their first presentation at 8:30 a.m. was judged by former Fountain Valley VE student, Carson Capanash and Ranjit Mayadas, while their second presentation which took place at 9 a.m. with judges Kepley DePalma and Joni Fultom.
“It was a bit nerve wracking since this was regional and would determine whether we would make state or not so I definitely felt a lot of pressure to do well, especially since I was representing the marketing branch of the company,” said Dinh.
On Dec. 12, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Spalter received an email from VE Southern California Regional Director, Teri Jones congratulating the company for reaching the top 42 firms and qualifying for the State Business Plan Competition in Bakersfield.
“Within the next few weeks leading up to Bakersfield, I plan on improving the company environment. I’m grateful that we are a very close knit company and all of us are close friends; however, this leads to the line between friendship and professionalism to become blurry, so our company can get disorganized and people go off task. I think with a slight nudge in the right direction, and the right amount of encouragement and preparation, we will be successful at Bakersfield,” said Chief Operating Officer (COO) Nguyen.
On Dec. 17, Jones sent the official score sheet for the company to review and base their revisions off of. Grow N’ Go received a total score of 82.000.
“When I saw the results I was very happy for our team, but no surprised. Our team put in the effort to get this result through hours of planning and presenting. I’m proud of us for putting in the work, and I’m glad that our results reflect that,” said Spalter.
FVHS students can support VE on their trip to Bakersfield by attending their Chiptole fundraiser on Thurs. Dec. 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and mention “Virtual Enterprise.”
