How to add an IP camera to a Hikvision NVR (easy step-by-step)

In this article, I explain how to add an IP camera to a Hikvision NVR.

The process is straightforward and takes less than 5 minutes.

I'm assuming you have the IP cameras connected directly to a Hikvision NVR via UTP (network cable), as shown in the picture below.

Hikvision NVR Network Diagram

As you can see, there are different camera models connected to the Hikvision NVR, but all of them can be added to the recorder if they are ONVIF compliant.

You can connect an HDMI or VGA monitor and a mouse to the NVR to control the menu that shows up on the screen; that's the easiest way to do the first setup.

Let's take a look at the set up process...

How to add an IP camera to a Hikvsion NVR

To add an IP camera to a Hikvision NVR, you need to make sure which protocol you will use, which means Hikvision or ONVIF protocol.

As long as the IP cameras have their IPs in the same subnetwork range, the NVR can find them; you just need to open the " Add IP Camera " menu and select the camera you want to add and then chose the protocol and insert the credentials.

Hikvision NVR add camera button

The picture below shows the first IP camera using the Hikvision protocol because it's a Hikvision Mini PTZ camera . The other cameras have different brands and are not directly compatible with the NVR, so they use the ONVIF protocol.

Hikviison IP camera IP and protocol

Click the IP camera you want to add to the NVR, choose the "Adding Method" (Manual/Plug-and-Play), make sure the IP address is correct and then enter the username and password as shown in the picture below.

Edit IP camera Address and redentials

As you can see below, the Hikvision IP camera was added to the NVR.

The icons on the screen indicate the motion detection is enabled for this camera, and it's recording the video into the NVR. Still, you can't just assume that it is correctly configured in your first installation.

Live Video Stream

Next, let's take a look at how to configure the camera's motion detection and recording parameters...

Enable motion detection in the Hikivsion NVR

It's necessary to enable motion detection in the NVR so it can record the footage based on events that happen in front of the camera.

The process is pretty simple, use the mouse, right-click the screen and click on the "Menu" button to open the Main Menu.

Hikvision NVR floating menu

Now, click on the "Motion" menu and adjust the parameter for motion detection.

It's necessary to select the area for the motion detection and adjust the sensitivity.

Hikvision NVR camera motion detection configuration

Now you have the NVR ready to detect motion when somebody (or something) moves in front of the camera, that's cool, huh?

You still need to set up the recording schedule; let's see how that works.

Set up the recording schedule in the Hikvision NVR

It's essential to record the footage according to the schedule that makes sense for our application type. You can set up weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

To adjust the recording schedule, click the " Record " icon in the main menu.

Hikvision NVR Record Menu

In the schedule recording menu, select the days and hours you want to record the footage based on continuous recording or events and alarms.

You can select different days and recording method for each one of the cameras.

The picture below shows an example of event recording from Monday to Friday and continuous recording on Sundays. (just a random example).

Hikvision NVR Record options

The next step is to adjust the quality you want to record the footage.

Click on " Parameter " and select the resolution, bitrate, video quality, and frame rate you want for each of the cameras, as shown in the picture below.

Hikvision NVR resolution frame rate setup

And it's done.

You have your IP cameras connected to the NVR recording the footage.

Don't forget to adjust the date and time of the NVR (this is essential).

How to Connect Hikvision IP Cameras to an NVR

Hikvision IP cameras are very popular in the security camera industry. You may already own a Hikvision system or cameras. One of the recurring complaints we hear about Hikvision  equipment is that it can be difficult to use. For your everyday home consumer complicated equipment can be time consuming, and just not worth it. Even installers have difficulties getting Hikvision systems to work exactly how they want. The good news is Hikvision’s cameras can connect and record to an Avalonix NVR.

Some notable OEM Hikvision brands include: LaView, LTS, and more. OEM means the cameras and NVR are relabeled and sold under a different brand. However, it does not mean OEM systems are any easier to use. If you are unhappy with your Hikvision NVR, but want to keep your cameras and are looking for a professional and easy to use system then you found the right place.

Step 1. Prepare your Hikvision Camera to be added

You will need to set your IP camera up to be added via the ONVIF protocol. You will need to access the web interface of the camera. This may vary depending on the firmware version on your cameras, but the process should be relatively the same. If the options look different, try looking for similar settings.

A. Configure the cameras to be accessible from your network

Using Hikvision’s Batch Configuration or SADP tool you will need to change the IP address on your IP camera. You will need to set the IP address to the same network as your router so you can access the cameras web interface from your computer. Keep in mind each camera needs a unique IP address on the same network.

If you’re unsure how to change the IP address, or need to download software tools for your cameras we recommend contacting Hikvision or the OEM camera vendor you purchased from.

B. Enable ONVIF protocol and add an ONVIF user

After you are able to access your camera's web interface you will need to enable the ONVIF protocol inside the camera. ONVIF  allows our NVRs to add and connect to the Hikvision cameras and start recording video.

how to add hikvision ip camera

The ONVIF option is usually found in the Configuration page under the Network subsection and finally Advanced Settings (items 1 and 2 in the image above)

The advanced settings page will have multiple tabs. The ONVIF settings are found in the Integration Protocol tab (item 3 in the image above).

Check the “Enable ONVIF” box (item 4 in the image above).

You also need to create an ONVIF user. To create an ONVIF user simply click the Add button (item 5 in the image above). Create a username and password you will remember. This is the username and password that you will need to enter for connecting to the camera from the NVR. For the best compatibility we recommend making the ONVIF user at the Administrator level.

Click Save at the bottom of the options to save the changes.

Step 2. Add the Hikvision Camera to an Avalonix NVR

After your cameras are configured to have an ONVIF user and the ONVIF protocol is enabled you can now move on to adding them to the Avalonix NVR. In our guide we cover using the web interface to manually add the camera. However, you can also manually add these cameras in front of the NVR using the Camera registration screen.

A. Access the web interface of the NVR

You will need to access the web interface of the NVR. You will need to type the IP address set on your NVR in the address bar of a web browser like Edge, or Chrome. Our NVRs ship with a default IP address - 192.168.1.108.

You will be required to login with the username and password that is set on your NVR. If you have not changed the username and password from default, you can find the password label located on the top of the Avalonix NVR.

B. Navigate to the Camera Registration screen and click Manual Add

When you first login to your NVR you will see a lot of options. You will want to navigate to the Camera Registration screen. On our NVR this is done by clicking Management at the top left and choosing the top option Camera.

how to add hikvision ip camera

After you’re in the Camera Registration screen you will see the linked devices. If your NVR has no cameras added, or connected then you see a blank screen like in our example.

To add an ONVIF camera click the Manual Add button to bring up a Manual Add menu.

C. Manually Add the Hikvision IP camera

Finally you are ready to manually add the information for your Hikvision cameras. You will need to create a manual entry for each camera you want to add to the NVR.

When adding the cameras you will first want to change the Manufacturer from Private to ONVIF. This will tell the NVR to look at the IP address for an ONVIF device.

Then you will need to enter the IP address you set on your camera earlier. This will need to be repeated for each camera you have setup on the network.

To finish your Manual Add entry, type in the username and password for the ONVIF user you created on the camera. Click OK to save the entry.

how to add hikvision ip camera

As long as you’ve typed everything in correctly and the camera has been configured properly you should receive a green status and the device entry might fill in the Hikvision model number or camera name. You should give it up to a minute or two before it finishes connecting.

how to add hikvision ip camera

Troubleshooting

  • If you don’t receive a green status after some time you will want to review the Hikvision camera's settings to ensure the ONVIF protocol is enabled and the ONVIF user is created.
  • Try restarting the NVR and camera if you’ve verified all of the information is correct.
  • You want to make sure the NVR and camera are on the same network and can communicate.

Please note not all Hikvision cameras will connect to an Avalonix NVR using the ONVIF protocol so your mileage may vary.

What is Hik-Connect?

Hik-Connect is both an application and cloud service that connects security products like cameras or NVR to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Both this service and application is what makes it possible to view your cameras remotely on your devices.

How do I setup Hik-Connect on my mobile device?

First, you need to register for a hik-connect account. You can either go to our  website and register , or you can download the hik-connect application and register. Hik-Connect can be downloaded from the  Apple App Store for iOS and iPadOS , and from our website if you have  Android mobile or tablet . After you have completed the registration you need to sign in to the app using your username and password you created. The last step is to add your device to hik-connect, depending on what type of device you have will determine the steps you need to take to add the device. Use the documents attached to this email and follow the steps to add your device to hik-connect.

How do I setup Hik-Connect on my computer?

If you would like to view your devices such as your cameras or NVR from your computer we have a software program called iVMS-4200 that supports both Windows and Mac. You will need to download and install this software onto your computer. Once you have installed the software you will then need to register for a hik-connect account. You can go to our  website and register if you do not already have an account. The last step is to add your device to Hik-Connect, depending on what type of device you have will determine the steps you need to take to add the device. Other ways to connect:

For advanced users, there is support for Hik-Connect DDNS which is an additional feature of our cloud service that requires port forwarding. Sometimes this service is required to unlock additional features of your product.  Depending on your device type and to unlock some product features you may need to configure Hik-Connect DDNS. Generally, our support is limited to the setup and configuration of our Hik-Connect application and cloud service but if you need to also enable Hik-Connect DDNS you will need to first work with your ISP or IT department for assistance with port forwarding.

Other advanced remote configuration options such as direct WAN IP for web browser access or 3 rd party DDNS services like No-IP and DynDNS are supported in most of our products. These are considered advanced configurations, you may need to contact a 3 rd party support provider for setup.

How to add an ONVIF IP camera to a Hikvision DVR (or NVR)

Marco Albertini

It’s very easy to add an ONVIF IP camera to a Hikvision DVR or NVR . A third party ONVIF IP camera is a camera that supports the ONVIF protocol and you can hook up that camera to any Hikvision recorder (hybrid DVR or NVR). In this guide we will explain step-by-step how to add an ONVIF IP camera to a Hikvision recorder.

Which Hikvision recorders work with ONVIF cameras?

Let’s clarify which Hikvision recorders are compatible and are able to correctly show third-party ONVIF cameras. There are two types of recorders that work with ONVIF IP cameras:

  • Hikvision Hybrid DVR . These types of DVRs are called hybrid DVRs and they support HD over coax analog cameras (such as HD-TVI and AHD), regular analog cameras (CVBS) and also the IP cameras. The number of supported IP cameras varies from one IP camera to 2, 4, and more (it depends on the model of the DVR).  For example, you have a model like the Hikvision DS-7208HGHI Turbo Hybrid DVR you are ready to get your IP camera on as long as it is the camera itself is ONVIF compliant.
  • Hikvision NVR . This one doesn’t need too much explanation, it’s a Network Video Recorder and it’s designed to work with IP cameras. All Hikvision NVRs support ONVIF protocol, meaning you can connect/add third-party cameras as long as these cameras are ONVIF compliant.

There may be other cameras hooked up directly to the recorder (they can be HD analog cameras, or other IP cameras going to a built-in PoE switch, etc). That’s not very important in this demonstration, all we need is a laptop, the camera going to the router and the recorder connected to the same router.

How to add an ONVIF camera to a Hikvision NVR or DVR?

The setup process is quite simple, double-check the diagram shown in the previous section. The IP camera, the laptop, and the recorder must be on the same network and, of course, their IP addresses must be one the same IP range .

Set up the recorder’s IP address

Your network IP range may be different than the one shown in this example, however, the idea and the procedure are the same. Let’s start setting up the IP address on your recorder.

Add the IP camera to the recorder

We assume you’ve already modified the camera’s IP address. Each camera has its own software for scanning and modifying the IP address, making sure it matches the IP range as shown on the previous diagram.

In our example, the camera’s IP address is 192.168.1.100 and we already know the username and the password to access it. If you’re not sure how to find the camera’s IP address or modify it, consult the manual that the camera comes with.

  • IP camera address: 192.168.1.100
  • Protocol: ONVIF
  • Management port: 80
  • Transfer protocol: Auto
  • Username: admin
  • Password: camera’s password.

Important note: Check your IP camera to find out if it’s compatible with the ONVIF protocol and what’s the default ONVIF port. You can use free software to run the tests ( we recommend using ONVIF Device Manager ).

Make sure the camera is set up to record properly. Double-check the playback just to make sure. For more information about recording settings and modes, read these two articles:
