Note: The APA Publication Manual, 7 th Edition specifies different formatting conventions for student  and  professional  papers (i.e., papers written for credit in a course and papers intended for scholarly publication). These differences mostly extend to the title page and running head. Crucially, citation practices do not differ between the two styles of paper.

However, for your convenience, we have provided two versions of our APA 7 sample paper below: one in  student style and one in  professional  style.

Note: For accessibility purposes, we have used "Track Changes" to make comments along the margins of these samples. Those authored by [AF] denote explanations of formatting and [AWC] denote directions for writing and citing in APA 7.

In this webinar, the style experts demonstrate how to set up student papers (font, line spacing, margins, page numbers, etc.), with an emphasis on how default word-processing software settings align with seventh edition style and make papers easier to format. The experts then address needs for formatting in the sections often included in student papers: title page, text, tables and figures, and reference list. The session concludes with steps for organizing papers and improving their quality.

The annotated diagrams from the webinar are available in this handout (PDF, 3.4MB) .

Manuscripts sent to editors are often in different states of crafting or drafting. It is the task of the editor to help the author by polishing the manuscripts to the acceptable standard. Editors may seek clarifications from the authors about the missing links in the drafts. They may ask for references of strong claims, improvement of the draft, refinement of the argument, adjustment in tone, chapter re-organisation, fixing grammar points, among others. Editors raise these flags in the editorial process through author queries. The nature of queries written by the editor for the author differs from the ones written by the authors or literary agents themselves to editors or publishing houses. This paper examines the various aspects of author queries and the diverse library and information resources at the disposal of an author in resolving the queries. It examines the modes and patterns of author queries across fiction and non-fiction. Above all, the paper gives practical examples and useful tips on the craft of writing author queries and how the author could fix them by the use of library resources. Dr. Andrew Kemp

According to Stangl (1994), Jalongo (2002), Richards and Miller (2005) and a host of other authors regarding publishing in educational journals, understanding the audience for an article is of utmost importance. Huff (1999) notes that an author must understand the audience for whom s/he writes. While much of this understanding of audience comes down to suitable topics (Silverman, 1982), articles must also fit the style of the journal to which it is being presented (Olsen, 1997). With this in mind, the purpose of this study is to characterize the writing style of academic writing in education. This research will involve exploring and analyzing various education and research journals, and through an analysis of individual education articles, delineating the writing style for academic writing in education. By looking at the various components of writing style, a writing style or various writing styles found in scholarly writing in education was determined. It was found that there is a definite style in academic writing in education with two other distinct subsets—journals associated with specific associations and journals with a purely quantitative focus. It is suggested that specific curriculum and instruction in writing style be added to the current study of research.

This paper presents and describes the goals and beginnings of an ongoing, collaborative assessment project designed by a librarian and a writing program faculty member at a medium-sized, doctoral/research university. Librarians at this institution have integrated research instruction within the university’s first-year writing program for over 30 years and since 2010, librarians and writing faculty have designed adaptable, teaching modules that integrate new media and research tools into the writing curriculum. These modules were inspired by the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The institution’s accreditation process has also prompted institutional self-reflection that observes the continued impact of library instruction on students’ achievement. With the 2015-filed ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education in mind, the authors use assessment data, student essays, and student self-reflections to re-consider the teaching and assessment of information literacy learning.
