12 Discord Tips and Tricks All Users Should Know

There's more to Discord than meets the eye. Use these Discord tips and tricks to get even more out of Discord.

Discord has become one of the leading chat platforms on the web. What started life as a service for gamers has built an impressive list of features that have helped it grow into other areas. Today, the app is used by everyone from businesses to crypto investors.

Using Discord is simple, but there is more to Discord than meets the eye if you know where to look. With that in mind, here are some Discord tips and tricks that all users should know.

1. Special Discord Integrations

discord apps

Discord has some built-in integrations with other common apps. You just need to enable the connections to reap the benefits.

In total, 11 different apps are supported. They are Battle.net, GitHub, Twitch, YouTube, Blizzard Entertainment, Steam, Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Spotify, and Xbox Live. The features of each integration vary from app to app. However, they all provide a way to sync the data from the linked app directly into your Discord server.

To set up Discord integrations from your desktop app, go to User Settings > Connections and click on the apps' icons.

2. Control Your Discord Notifications

discord notifications

If you are a member of many Discord servers, your notifications can quickly spiral out of control. Opening the app to discover thousands of unread messages isn't helpful; you can't possibly parse that amount of information.

Thankfully, Discord lets you take a granular level of control over your notifications. You can edit your preferences at the server level, the channel level, and the user level.

To edit your general notification settings (such as unread notification badges and desktop messages), go to User Settings > Notifications . If you want to turn off notifications for an entire server, right-click on the server's icon and select Server Mute . Finally, if you only want to turn off alerts for a particular channel, right-click on the channel's name and choose Mute [Channel Name] .

3. Use Server Folders in Discord

In July 2019, Discord added support for server folders ; it was a feature many users had requested for years. By using server folders, you can organize your list of servers on the left-hand side of the screen into more manageable groups. For people who are members of dozens of different groups, the folders make the app much easier to use.

To create a new server folder, drag one server's icon on another server's icon. And if you right-click on the newly created folder, you can rename it, change its color, and tweak other settings.

4. Use Markdown in Discord

One of the cool Discord tricks that not many people know is the app's support for markdown . For the uninitiated, Markdown is a lightweight markup language created in 2004. It has many applications, but it is most commonly used to create rich text using a plain text editor. It means you can use markdown to format your messages the way you want.

Here are some of the most common markdown writing tips you should know about:

  • Bold: **[TEXT]**
  • Italics: *[TEXT]* or _[TEXT]_
  • Underscore: __[TEXT]__
  • Strikethrough: ~~Strikethrough~~
  • Code: `[TEXT]`
  • Hyperlink: [Hyperlink!]([URL])
  • Remove embeds: <[URL]>

Use these codes liberally, and you'll be able to make your messages stand out from the crowd.

5. Set Up Discord Hotkeys

Discord hotkeys—called Keybinds—let you set which keys activate specific in-app actions. You can either set up a single key or a combination of keys.

They are available for the following actions:

  • Activate Overlay Chat
  • Push to Talk (Normal)
  • Push to Talk (Priority)
  • Toggle Mute
  • Toggle Deafen
  • Toggle Streamer Mode
  • Toggle Overlay
  • Toggle Overlay Lock

To set up Keybinds, go to User Settings > Keybinds . Click on Record Keybind to enter your preferred combinations.

6. Use Discord Keyboard Shortcuts

As you'd expect, Discord offers a bunch of keyboard shortcuts. Expert users rely on them a lot; if you're involved in lots of simultaneous chats, you need to be able to bounce between them quickly.

Some Discord shortcuts that are worth knowing include:

  • Switch servers: Ctrl + Alt + Up/Down
  • Switch channels: Alt + Up/Down
  • Cycle through unread messages: Alt + Shift + Up/Down
  • Mark channel as read: Escape
  • Mark server as read: Shift + Escape
  • Jump to oldest unread message: Shift + Page Up
  • Toggle emoji window: Ctrl + E
  • Toggle deafen: Ctrl + Shift + D
  • Answer a call: Ctrl + Enter
  • Edit your last message: Up

Keyboard shortcuts differ from hotkeys in that you cannot edit or remove them; they are hardcoded into the Discord app.

7. Install Discord Bots

discord bot example

Bots play an increasingly important role in lots of communications apps. You'll find them in everything from Facebook Messenger to Telegram.

Discord is no different. There are hundreds of community-developed Discord bots available—each designed to fulfill a specific role on the server. For example, GAwesome Bot can be used to conduct polls and giveaways, GameStats lets you rank gaming stats and profiles against your buddies, and there's even a quiz-themed bot called TriviaBot .

The bots are almost all free to install and use. You will only be able to add new bots to a server if you're an admin, but you can add as many as you want to your personal rooms.

8. Buy Discord Nitro

discord nitro

If you find that the basic version of Discord is not meeting your needs, you should consider upgrading to the paid pro version, called Discord Nitro .

Discord Nitro introduces some cool additional features. For example, you can set up a custom Discord tag (for the duration of your subscription), share your screen in either 720p (60 FPS) or 1080p (30 FPS), increase the maximum file upload size (from 8MB to 50MB or 100MB), upload your own GIFs, and enjoy support for global custom emojis.

Discord Nitro costs $50/year or $5/month. There's also a more expensive plan that introduces "server boosts". The boosts are primarily gimmicks and don't warrant the price of $10/month or $100/year.

9. Type Discord Chat Commands

Discord offers several in-app chat commands. They are only available on the desktop app and iOS; unfortunately, Android users are out of luck.

Check out some of these popular commands to get started:

  • /nick : Lets you change your server-specific nickname (assuming the permission is turned on). Enter your new nickname after the command.
  • /tenor and /giphy : Allow you to search the web for animated GIFs.
  • /spoiler : Hides your message, so other users don't see your spoilers for TV series and games.
  • /shrug : Gives the common ¯\_(?)_/¯ output in the chat window.
  • \[emoji] : Typing a \ before an emoji will enter the Unicode emoji picture rather than the Discord version.
  • s/[text]/[new text] : This command is a simple way to edit typos in your previous message. For example, s/bananna/banana would replace the misspelled word (bananna) with the correct version.

10. Edit Voice Processing Settings

discord voice settings

One of the most underused Discord tricks is to improve your own mic's audio output by using the app's powerful voice processing features. Settings you can toggle on/off include Echo Cancelation, Noise Reduction, and Automatic Gain Control. You can also use a beta noise suppression tool for your microphone.

If the person you're chatting to is struggling to hear you, you should have a fiddle with these settings. They are all enabled by default. However, if you have a decent mic, they could be more of a hindrance than a help.

11. Enable 2FA on Discord

discord 2fa setup

If you're anything like us, you'll be a member of dozens of Discord servers across various topics. You don't want someone to gain unauthorized access to all that information—it's a window on your life, hobbies, and friends that needs to be kept out of the wrong hands.

One of the best ways to ensure the security of your Discord account is to turn on 2FA. When enabled, you'll need to add an extra numerical code generated by a phone app or dongle every time you log in. You can enable 2FA on Discord by heading to Settings > My Account > Enable Two-Factor Auth .

To learn more about 2FA, check out our article explaining the pros and cons of various 2FA methods .

12. Enable Discord Developer Mode

discord dev mode setup

The Discord Developer Mode is primarily aimed at, well, Discord developers.

However, if you run your own server, it's worth turning on for one reason: you can use the tool to quickly grab the unique multi-digit ID of users, individual messages, and servers. You can use them to further customize the Discord experience for your server's members.

Turn on Developer Mode by going to Settings > Appearance > Advanced > Developer Mode .

How to use the Discord overlay to chat and take calls while gaming

  • You can use the Discord overlay to chat, take calls, and even watch videos while playing games.
  • To enable the Discord overlay, open the settings menu and click "Game Overlay."
  • The Discord overlay is only available on PC — it's not included with the Mac version.

Over the past few years, Discord has become a major name in the world of chatting apps. But it was originally designed for gamers, and a lot of its features still reflect that. For example, Discord users on Windows have access to an exclusive feature called the Game Overlay.

Discord's Game Overlay lets you quickly bring up Discord while playing a game, even if you're playing in fullscreen mode. Along with showing you any new messages or calls you receive, the overlay also lets you "pin" a chat to the screen so it'll always be visible while you play.

Here's how to enable the Discord overlay on your computer and use it while gaming.

How to enable the Discord overlay

There are two major steps to get Discord's Game Overlay working. First, you need to enable the overlay itself; and second, you need to pick which games it can work in.

To enable the overlay, open Discord and click the gear icon in the bottom-left corner (next to your username). In the list of settings, scroll down and click Game Overlay . Toggle on the Enable in-game overlay option.

After you've done that, click Activity Status in the left sidebar. You'll see a list of all the games that Discord has recognized you playing on this computer — click the icon that looks like a monitor next to their names to enable the overlay in those games.

How to use the Discord overlay

Once you've got the overlay turned on, launch one of the games that you enabled it for. You should see a message appear in the corner of the screen telling you how to open the overlay — if you do, this means that you've got it working.

Now while gaming, you'll see a notification appear on-screen for every message and call you receive. To respond to any of these messages or use Discord's other features, open the overlay by pressing its keyboard shortcut.

By default, the keyboard shortcut is Shift + ` but you can change this shortcut at any time from the Game Overlay settings page.

If you want to keep track of an entire conversation while you play, not just new messages, you can "pin" a Discord chat to your screen. Toggle on the overlay and head to that chat, then click the thumbtack icon in the top-right corner.

The chat will disconnect itself from the rest of the Discord window, and you can move it anywhere by clicking and dragging its top toolbar. Click and drag the bottom-right corner to resize it.

The first time you pin a chat like this, you'll notice that it becomes incredibly transparent, almost to the point where you can't read any of it. This is so you can focus on your game, but if you want the chat to be less transparent, open the overlay again and click the square Opacity icon next to the thumbtack.

If you want to change any of the overlay's other settings, including where on the screen your notifications appear, head back to the Game Overlay options page.

14 Best Discord Tips and Tricks: The Ultimate Guide

Whether you are a gamer or not, there is a high chance that you might have used Discord. Over the years, the platform has been a great place to hang out. However, some Discord tips and tricks can elevate your experience on the platform.

Discord Tips and Tricks

These tricks have helped us a lot in changing the experience with the app, and we believe it will be for you, too. The tricks range from something as simple as using Markdown in Discord to as complex as sending large files. Let’s explore them all.

1. Send Files More Than the Discord File Limit

Despite being a popular Messaging app, Discord still has a small limit to sending files. Even with Discord Nirtro, you can only send files up to 100MB. So what do you do if you want to send files that are bigger than that? We already have a detailed guide on how to get around the  Discord file size limit . However, here’s a quick trick:

Discord File Size Limit

Step 1:  Open your favorite cloud storage and upload your files. Make sure you have logged in to your account.

Step 2: Once uploaded, you can share the link to Discord.

You can also compress the files to bring them below the Discord file size limit and then share them.

2. React to Messages

We might feel the need to express our opinion for some messages but don’t want to send a dedicated message for that. That’s where the message react feature in Discord comes in handy. Here’s how you can react to messages in Discord:

Step 1: Open the Discord app and navigate to the message you want to react to.

Step 2 : Right-click (for PC) or tap and hold (for smartphones) the message to react. You will see a list of suggested reactions.

Tip : If required, tap the emoji picker icon and select the emoji of your choice.

Choose the message reaction you want to give

For Discord PC and web users, hover your cursor on the top-right corner of the message to find what suits you. Alternatively, right-click on the message and select Add reaction from the menu. You can add more than one reaction to a message.

3. Change Activity Status in Discord

Discord users can also  turn off the activity status to show whether they are online or not to other users. However, when you turn it off, you can’t see others’ activity status.

On iOS or Android Device

Step 1:  Open the Discord app on iPhone or Android and tap on the profile button at the bottom.

Step 2: Tap next to Set Status and choose between the following options:

  • Online: The default option where you and other users can see your online status.
  • Idle: This means you have Discord open on your device but are inactive.
  • Do not disturb: When you select this option, it won’t notify you of the messages you receive on Discord.
  • Invisible:  Choose this option to turn off the activity status in Discord completely.

tap the profile button and choose Set Status

On PC or Web

As for Discord app and web users, you can click the icon below your profile picture. From here, you can select the activity status.

4. Individual User Volume Adjustment

While Discord has many features that you can find on other popular messaging apps, the ability to adjust the volume for each chat is only available for Discord. Here’s how you can use this messaging trick:

Step 1:  In Discord, open the group and click the ‘Show Members list’ icon to show the users on the server.

You don’t need to do this if the user list is already shown.

Choose Show Member List

Step 2: Right-click the users whose volume you want to adjust individual user volume.

Step 3:  You can adjust the User Volume according to your needs.

Adjust User Volume

5. Link Discord With Other Services

Discord offers the ability to connect with multiple services. Here’s how you can find it:

Step 1: Open Discord and enter the User Settings by clicking the gear icon next to the username.

Choose User Settings 1

Step 2: Click Connections. Here, you will see all the services with which you can connect.

Choose Connections from the side and connect it to the service you want to

We have prepared some guides on how you can connect Discord with other popular services:

  • Connect Spotify with Discord
  • Connect Steam to Discord

6. Control Your Discord Notifications

Discord is an amazing place to hang out. However, you will receive many notifications if you are in a bigger group. Thankfully, you can control these notifications. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open Discord, right-click on the server, and choose Notification Settings.

Step 2 : On the new window, you can customize how to be notified of the messages from the server.

Choose the server and select Notification Settings

7. Use Server Folders in Discord

Joined too many servers and are having a hard time organizing them? Then, with this Discord tip, you can organize servers into folders. To add a server to a new folder:

Step 1: In Discord, click and drag the server’s icon from the sidebar over the ones you want to include.

Step 2: Once the folder is created, right-click it. After that, choose Folder Settings.

Combine the servers and right click on them to chose Folder Settings

You can rename the folder, change its color, and tweak many other settings.

How to Use Keyboard Shortcuts for Discord, Slack, and GitHub

By learning these Discord shortcuts, Slack shortcuts, and Github shortcuts you will increase your productivity every day, and for years to come. Keyboard shortcuts are quick ways to use different key combinations on your keyboard to navigate a program or perform different actions and functions.
