Best Business Cell Phone Plan Reviews

Best for business cell phone deals: verizon wireless.

Why we chose it: Verizon offers business owners a range of deals on mobile devices and solutions. These deals include free 5G phones, speed upgrades and discounts for businesses owned by military members.

  • Unlimited data, text and talk
  • Unlimited mobile hotspot usage
  • 4G LTE and 5G nationwide coverage
  • Call filter to automatically block incoming spam calls
  • Pricing on plans is higher compared to competitors
  • Devices must be compatible with 5G to use the network

With any of Verizon's business cell phone plans, you'll get unlimited mobile hotspot usage so you can share your connectivity to any Wi-Fi-enabled device no matter where you are. These wireless plans also have a shareable data pool for all your devices.

Verizon offers different pricing plans depending on your business’s size and needs. The plans are:

  • Business Unlimited Start 2.0: Pricing starts at $30 per line per month when you purchase five or more lines. With this plan, you’ll get 5G nationwide/4G LTE coverage, unlimited talk, data and text as well as unlimited mobile hotspot data. Verizon's call filter will automatically block spam calls for you.
  • Business Unlimited Plus 2.0: This plan is $35 per user per month for five or more lines. It includes all the features in the Start pricing plan plus 100 GB of premium network access and 5G ultra-wideband coverage. This pricing tier also gives you better security features through Business Mobile Secure to ensure safe browsing.
  • Business Unlimited Pro 2.0: The best (and priciest) business cell phone plan from Verizon is $45 per user per month when you purchase five or more lines of service. It offers everything in the Plus plan and adds unlimited premium network access. You’ll also receive a 50% discount on Business Unlimited Tablet Pro plans.

Verizon also has an intuitive device management system that lets you remotely manage all the mobile devices connected to your network. The system allows you to use a single management portal to maintain security policies across your organization.

Verizon offers 24/7 customer support for its business cell phone plans. You can contact the customer service team via phone, email and live chat, or you can request a store appointment if you need in-person support.

Best for Team Collaboration: Xfinity Mobile

Why we chose it: Xfinity Mobile , a service provided by Comcast, gives you access to a nationwide network of Wi-Fi hotspots, so you'll enjoy reliable 5G network coverage almost anywhere. If your team is collaborating on a project, members can connect easily to the Xfinity network and access any needed files quickly or have a video chat hassle-free.

  • Excellent price points
  • Broad coverage area
  • 5G network access
  • Only available to Xfinity internet users
  • Browsing speed reduction when you exceed your data limit
  • Only allows limited devices in the BYOD program

Xfinity allows you to connect to its network by subscribing to its Unlimited or By the Gig data options. With By the Gig, all the lines on your account share a chosen data amount, which ranges between 1 GB and 10 GB per month. Exceeding the selected data amount generates a $15 charge per additional gigabyte. To avoid this charge, users can connect to any of the Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots available nationwide. Hotspot data usage is free and won’t count against your monthly total.

You can choose the Unlimited option if you’re a heavy data user or don’t have frequent access to an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot. You can also switch between the two plan options whenever your data usage changes.

Additionally, Xfinity allows you to bring your phone through the BYOD (bring your own device) program. However, only certain devices are eligible, so be sure to check your phone's compatibility with Xfinity if you don't plan on purchasing a new one.

Xfinity Mobile offers two pricing tiers for small businesses:

  • Unlimited: This plan costs $45 per user per month or as little as $22 per user per month if you have 20 connected phone lines. The pricing tier gives you unlimited access to 5G and 4G LTE data.
  • By the Gig: With this pricing plan, you pay an additional $15 per GB once you exceed your chosen data usage amount.

Xfinity’s user experience is centered around ensuring customers can manage their plans easily, from signing up online to upgrading plans without hassle. For example, if you’re using the unlimited plan and want to upgrade to the latest pricing plan, you can do so through the Xfinity Mobile app.

Xfinity has a 24/7 chatbot if you need to ask questions about accessibility, account management and billing. You can also get answers from helpful guides that address common questions or visit a store to get the help of a consultant.

Best for International Service: Teltik

Why we chose it: For business owners with employees who frequently travel abroad, Teltik offers an excellent cell phone plan with unlimited calls to Mexico and Canada at no additional cost.

  • Nationwide 5G network
  • No contract
  • Inexpensive pricing

Teltik gives you unlimited data, talk and text without requiring a service contract. This means you can easily change your cell phone plan whenever your business needs change.

Teltik offers a vast network of hotspots across the country that provide free Wi-Fi to customers. Teltik’s plans also have a Wi-Fi calling feature, or VoIP, which ensures you can make calls even when traveling internationally.

Teltik allows you to bring your personal phone to the network and keep using your existing number. However, the company does not offer new phones for purchase. If you need to purchase new phones for your business, this may not be the best option for you.

Teltik has three pricing plans for small businesses, including:

  • 2 GB for $20 per month
  • 6 GB for $30 per month
  • Unlimited data for $40 per month

All these price tiers offer similar features, including: 4G and 5G data, unlimited talk and text, hotspots, nationwide coverage and calls to Mexico and Canada.

Creating an account and navigating its intuitive control panel is easy with Teltik. From the control panel, you can manage your account, check data usage, add lines and make payments. As your business grows, you can make necessary changes to your plan, such as adding more lines of service.

Teltik has a team of highly trained customer support representatives who are always available to help you. You can send them a message through Teltik's website or call them. You can also find answers to any burning questions on Teltik's extensive FAQ page.

Best for Reliable Coverage: T-Mobile

Why we chose it: because of the size and scope of its network, T-Mobile provides reliable wireless coverage across the U.S. and parts of Mexico and Canada. It also offers a variety of cell phone business plans for businesses of all sizes.

  • Bonus perks like in-flight Wi-Fi
  • Strong 5G network
  • Service plans that allow for unlimited talk and text for employees in Mexico and Canada
  • Anti-scam feature
  • Expensive for small businesses that need less than six lines
  • The best features are only available in the higher-priced tiers

T-Mobile has features and unique bonuses that set it apart from the standard business cell phone plans. For example, some higher-tier plans allow you to enjoy unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi and subscriptions to Microsoft 365 productivity tools.

No matter your plan, you'll get unlimited talk and text plus 5G and 4G LTE data. T-Mobile plans also feature unlimited text and talk while in Mexico and Canada, and a scam shield feature to identify and block scam callers.

You can choose from the following business plans, each priced per line:

  • Business Unlimited Select: This plan starts at $25 per user per month when you buy six lines. You will get 50 GB of premium data, 5 GB of high-speed hotspot data and scam shield.
  • Business Unlimited Advanced: This plan costs $30 per user per month when you buy at least six lines. You will enjoy all the features in the Select plan, plus four full-flight Wi-Fi sessions.
  • Business Unlimited Ultimate: This tier costs $40 per line. It comes with unlimited premium data, unlimited full-flight Wi-Fi sessions, premium scam shield and 100 GB of hotspot data.

T-Mobile has user-friendly features such as a simple user profile that help you easily manage your account and business. You can also manage your account from any device using a self-service portal.

You can call or text the customer support team anytime. You can also schedule a time when you want to speak with an assistant, and they will call you back.

Best for Video Meetings: Google Voice

Why we chose it: Google Voice supports high-quality audio and video, allowing participants to have a clear, uninterrupted communication experience. Its seamless integration with Google Meet allows users to quickly join any meeting and start communicating right away.

  • Starts at just $10
  • Unlimited SMS and calls
  • Gives you a local phone number for calls, texts and voicemail (unlike most VoIP services)
  • Highly scalable
  • Must have an existing phone number to use the call-forwarding feature
  • Only allows for integration with Google workplace tools
  • Lacks advanced capabilities like real-time analytics

Google Voice is a virtual service that requires an existing phone number to send forwarded calls to. With the help of Google AI, Voice will help you block spam calls and transcribe your voicemails automatically. Since it integrates with Google tools, you can easily join video meetings with Google Meet and schedule calls with Google Calendar.

In terms of pricing, Google Voice has cheap business cell phone plans, including:

  • Starter: This plan starts at just $10 per user per month. It allows you to make calls between Google Voice numbers, calls to the U.S. from any Google Voice number and calls to Canada from a Canadian or U.S. Google Voice number. Other features in the Starter plan include unlimited texts in the U.S., integration with Google tools, voicemail transcription and call forwarding.
  • Standard: The Standard plan costs $20 per user per month and allows unlimited users and domestic locations. It comes with all the features found in the starter plan and more, like desk phone support and records for text messages and voicemails. It also allows for call recording.
  • Premier: This top-tier plan comes with all the bells and whistles for $30 per user per month. In addition to all the features in the other plans, this plan allows for unlimited users and international locations.

Google Voice has a simple user interface that will help you manage your assignments, workflows and billing on one platform. You can even customize it to fit your daily workflow. Aspects like billing, porting and number assignment are consolidated neatly in the Google Workspace Admin Console, which you’re likely familiar with if you use Google Workspace.

Best Budget-Friendly Option: AT&T

Why we chose it : AT&T provides features not usually found in other provider’s cheapest plans — such as unlimited text and calls to Canada and Mexico, trade-ins, and discounts on eligible devices — to make its business cell phone plan budget-friendly.

  • Unlimited texts to more than 200 countries
  • International roaming
  • Added security features
  • No overage charges
  • Data speed slows down during busy periods
  • Premium tiers and add-ons can make cell phone plans expensive

New and existing AT&T customers get a free Google Pixel 7 if they have an eligible trade-in device. You can also get the new iPhone 14 Pro with discounts of up to $800 as long as you have the eligible trade-in.

AT&T plans offer unlimited data, text and talk. You’ll also have access to a broad 5G network and a mobile hotspot with up to 5 GB of data.

In addition to domestic coverage, you’ll enjoy unlimited texts and calls from the U.S. to Mexico or Canada. AT&T does not charge roaming fees when using the phone in Canada, Mexico and select Latin American countries. These charges usually apply when you’re outside your home network area and using your phone in the coverage area of another provider.

AT&T’s security features include ActiveArmor, which enhances mobile security by blocking fraud and spam calls. The advanced version has safe browsing and identity monitoring features, too.

You can choose from one of these three AT&T business plans priced monthly and per line. The available plans are:

  • Business Unlimited Starter: Starting at $30, this plan offers unlimited domestic text, data and talk. You also have unlimited texts and phone calls to Mexico and Canada, access to 5G and 5G+ services, mobile security and standard streaming.
  • Business Unlimited Performance: This plan starts at $35 if you purchase five or more lines. It includes all of the starter plan's features plus high-definition streaming and improved mobile security.
  • Business Unlimited Elite: Pricing for this tier starts at $45 per line per month for at least five lines. It offers added features such as the AT&T Business Fast Track which prioritizes your data usage during congestion periods to ensure your business continues running smoothly. The plan also provides 100 GB of hotspot data.

AT&T has a user-friendly website where you can manage your account and view your usage and contact customer support 24/7. The service provider also offers free virtual training sessions where instructors teach you how to manage your wireless business accounts. There’s also a business forum where you can get answers to any questions about the service.

Best Customer Satisfaction: RingCentral

Why we chose it: RingCentral is a VoIP service that offers a wide variety of useful business features for team communication and document sharing.

  • Unlimited calls within the U.S. and Canada
  • Team messaging
  • Document sharing
  • Advanced features for call management
  • The wide variety of features can be overwhelming
  • The basic plan doesn't allow for video calls

RingCentral comes packed with features that increase productivity in your workplace. These include document sharing, team member messaging and unlimited business SMS. The team messaging feature is a collaboration tool that helps you centralize team communication via the RingCentral app.

RingCentral has a number of advanced features such as video and audio conferencing, call recording, multi-level auto attendant and overflow call queues. All these features enhance your customer service while helping your team collaborate. RingCentral also integrates with third-party tools like Zoho CRM, Microsoft 365 and Zendesk.

RingCentral’s pricing depends on the number of users on your plan and the features you want. The four pricing plans are:

  • Essential: This plan starts at $20 per user per month and gives you unlimited domestic calls and team messaging.
  • Standard: This plan costs $28 per user per month and offers unlimited faxing. With this plan, you can hold video meetings with up to 100 participants. You can also video call up to 100 people.
  • Premium: Prices start at $35 per user per month. You get automatic call recording, integration with third-party tools and all the features in the lower tiers.
  • Ultimate: This plan will cost you $50 per user per month and includes device status reports plus unlimited file storage.

RingCentral's user-friendliness is affected by the abundance of its features. The features can be overwhelming for new users, and it might take some time to learn how to use them all to the fullest.

However, its customer service compares favorably to that of other providers, especially if you're subscribed to the upper tiers. Nonetheless, if you're using low-priced plans, you might find the customer service less responsive than you'd like, as mentioned by multiple reviewers on TrustPilot.

Other companies we considered

  • Third-party integration
  • Toll-free numbers
  • Video-meeting capabilities even on the cheapest plan
  • Expensive international calls
  • Limited video meeting durations
  • Integrations are only available in high-tier plans

Nextiva is a cloud-based business phone service that combines communication channels such as collaboration, voice, text message and video tools in one place. It didn't make our list because it falls short in overall features compared to other comparable plans.

  • Affordable unlimited data plans
  • No need for a contract
  • No overage fees
  • Restrictions on hotspot data
  • Poor coverage in rural areas

MetroPCS is a prepaid cell phone service that uses T-Mobile's nationwide 4G LTE network. While MetroPCS's plans offer flexibility and affordability, the provider didn't make our list because it doesn't clearly distinguish between personal/household and business cell phone plans.

Cricket Wireless

  • Coverage on AT&T's nationwide 4G LTE network
  • No annual contracts
  • Speed caps on the unlimited plan
  • Limited phone selection
  • The basic plan is overpriced

Cricket Wireless is a prepaid wireless provider that offers affordable cell phone plans. With Cricket Wireless, you get 5G coverage and unlimited data for higher plans. We didn’t include this provider on our list because it may not have the comprehensive features that a business requires from a cell phone plan provider.

  • Unlimited text and talk in all plans
  • Strong mobile hotspot
  • No service contract
  • Excellent add-on services, including phone insurance and Boost call screener
  • Not compatible with most devices
  • Doesn't cover all locations across the nation

Boost Mobile is a prepaid wireless carrier, meaning you pay upfront and get only what you pay for. With Boost Mobile, you can enjoy high data speeds without service contracts. However, Boost is designed more for family and personal use and doesn’t offer the features many businesses are after.

Best Business Cell Phone Plans Guide

We created this guide for business cell phone plans to answer some of the most common questions related to the topic.

What is a business cell phone plan?

A business cell phone plan is a service that gives businesses access to a mobile network to facilitate communication from customers or among team members. Business cell phone plans typically come with a higher monthly price tag than personal plans, but they also offer more features and support that can benefit businesses. Examples of crucial features include flexibility in the number of lines, enhanced security, conference calling and additional data.

How do business cell phone plans work?

Business cell phone plans work just like any other cell phone plan. You pay a monthly fee in exchange for access to a set number of minutes, texts and data. The best small business cell phone plans come with additional features like unlimited calling or texting to certain numbers and support for international calls.

How to pick a business cell phone plan

Choosing a business cell phone plan provider is just like choosing the best internet provider for your home or business — you need to look at and weigh several factors to determine which plan best fits your budget and needs. These factors include:

Prices differ across different business cell phone plan providers, so be sure to shop around and compare before making your final decision.

The best business cell phone plan providers do not offer across-the-board prices. They organize their prices into different tiers, each with unique features. Consider what features and customer support you need and factor that into your budget. Just like with the best business checking accounts , the best cell phone plan for your business is an investment that will save you money in the long run.

Mobile devices offered

Most business cell phone plan providers also offer mobile devices. If you're looking for a new phone for your business, this can be a great time to get it. When considering this factor, think about what type of phone you (and, potentially, your employees) want and whether you're willing to pay more for a plan that comes with a mobile device.

VoIP services allow you to make calls on Wi-Fi networks so you can work internationally or in areas with low data reception. These services usually integrate with the computer and mobile phone you already own. Some plans will let you transfer your existing phone, but only if it's compatible with the provider's network.

Business cell phone plans come with various features, from basic call and text capabilities to more advanced features like custom integrations and identity monitoring. When choosing a plan, consider what features are most important to your business and ensure the plan you choose offers them.

International calling

International calling allows you to make and receive telephone calls to and from other countries. Depending on the provider, international calling may be limited to a certain number of countries or available in all countries around the world. Some providers also offer special rates for international calling, saving you money on long-distance calls.

If your business frequently makes or receives calls from other countries, you'll want to ensure your business cell phone plan offers international calling or fair rates for the countries you need to contact. Otherwise, you'll be paying high per-minute rates for each call, which can quickly add up.

Unlimited plans and unlimited calling

Some business cell phone plans come with unlimited minutes, texts and data, which can be a great option for businesses that make many calls or have many devices connected to the mobile network. Unlimited plans are typically more expensive, so if you're not sure you need unlimited anything, consider a different plan type that offers a set amount of minutes, texts or data at a lower cost.

Compare the Best Cell Phone Plans in Canada

Our users trust us :

comparatorTitles.name

With 33.7 million mobile internet users reported in 2021, Canada is home to North America’s second-largest mobile phone market with a market share of $14.8 billion according to NAFTA.

Here is a small guide to help you navigate the market and find the best cell phone plan for your needs.

How do cell phone plans work?

A cell phone plan is a paid agreement with a cell phone carrier. It allows your cellphone to use the carrier’s network to make and receive calls, send text messages and use the internet through mobile data. Cell phone plans typically come in three different formats: pay-as-you-go plans, prepaid plans and a postpaid plan.

  • A pay-as-you-go plan allows you to purchase a bundle of minutes or unlimited phone usage for a given day. The bundle will be used up according to a predetermined rate by your carrier that charges you a fixed amount for calls, texts, and internet access or for the entire day’s usage. This rate is typically higher than prepaid and postpaid plans.
  • A prepaid plan sees customers pay for their plan upfront every month upfront at a fixed rate with the possibility of cancelling at any time. This rate typically encompasses phone calls, texts and internet data. Charges will be incurred when phone usage exceeds the amount paid for on the plan.
  • A month-to-month, or postpaid plan, sees customers enter into a contract typically over the course of 12-24 months where they pay each month for a set amount of minutes and/ or data. If this amount is exceeded, cell phone services will continue but customers are liable to be charged for their extra usage. Postpaid plans are the most common and often entitle customers to cellphone upgrades pending on their type of contract.

How to choose the best phone plan?

The best deals on cell phone plans for a given customer depend upon their needs and those of their family and dependents.

Customers who rarely use their cell phones may want to opt for a pay-as-you-go contract, ensuring as little obligation as possible while not opening themselves up to the possibility of recurring charges. If you hardly use your phone, this is also the cheapest option out there.

Other customers may want to have the more comprehensive coverage provided by a prepaid plan, but retain the flexibility of cancelling the plan at any time.

For customers who want something more reliable and long-term, a postpaid plan typically has the most competitive rates and advantages, including phone upgrades depending upon the carrier. Customers can also purchase a family plan which provides cellular services to multiple phones for a reduced rate while also allowing parents to place controls on how their children use the internet.

Who offers cell phone plans in Canada?

Canada has sixteen primary Mobile Network Operators who offer cell phone plans, some with their own subsidiary operators. They are as follows:

  • Airtel Wireless
  • Bell Mobility (including Includes Virgin Plus, Lucky Mobile, Bell MTS, PC Mobile, Bell Aliant, Northwestel, and Wundle Mobile)
  • Eastlink Wireless
  • Freedom Mobile
  • Iristel (including Ice Wireless)
  • Keewaytinook Mobile
  • Rogers Wireless (including Fido Mobile, Chatr Mobile, Cityfone, Primus Wireless, Zoomer Wireless, SimplyConnect, Speakout Wireless, Phonebox Mobile (Postpaid and prepaid), Petro-Canada Mobility)
  • SaskTel Mobility
  • Sogetel Mobilité
  • TbayTel Mobility
  • Telus Mobility (including Includes Koodo Mobile, Public Mobile, and DCI Wireless)
  • TNW Wireless
  • Vidéotron Mobility (including Fizz Mobile)
  • Xplore Mobile

What is an MVNO?

An MVNO is an acronym used to refer to a Mobile Virtual Network Operator. The term describes a mobile provider that does not own or operate its own mobile network. MVNOs are also often referred to as virtual networks.

MVNOs typically purchase or lease the network services of a parent company so as not to have to deal with the expensive overheads of installation and maintenance. Savings are then often transferred to consumers, with MVNOs often undercutting their parent company competitors.

For example, Koodo Mobile is an MVNO of Telus Mobility, while Fido Mobile is an MVNO of Rogers Wireless.

How much does a cell phone plan cost?

Today, Canada’s three largest providers Virgin Mobile, Fido Mobile and Kidoo Mobile charge $45 a month for a postpaid plan with 6GB of data and unlimited domestic calls and texts.

The cost of a cell phone plan varies depending upon the kind of coverage you want as a consumer and pivotally, whether you want to purchase mobile data. While prices were much higher in Canada than in other countries, government intervention in 2019 mandated that providers slash prices by 25 percent over the next two years and prices have since stabilized.

Who has the cheapest cell phone plans?

The cheapest cell phone plans in Canada are offered by Public Mobile and come in at $15 per month , with unlimited texts, 100 minutes of calls and 250MB of data.

How much data does your phone plan need?

The amount of data your phone plan needs depends on how often you use the internet and whether access to mobile data is indispensable to your life.

Public Mobile’s $15 per month plan allows for very little data usage and could be perfect for someone who is actively trying not to use the internet. According to a report released by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association in 2020, 60 percent of Canadian consumers opt for a plan including 5 GBs of mobile data or more. If your job requires you to be on the internet often, you may wish to opt for a plan with more data – Kidoo Mobile, Virgin Mobile and Fido Mobile all have plans with 20GB per month at $65 .

Are month-to-month cell phone plans cheaper?

Month-to-month cell phone plans, also referred to as prepaid plans are often competitively priced especially when provided by MVNOs, but typically come with fewer extras such as phone upgrades and/or insurance. For the best rate all around, a postpaid plan is usually the best value.

Which cell phone plans have unlimited data?

Eight different mobile carriers offer unlimited data plans in Canada, however, they vary in price depending upon the download speed guaranteed to a service. Every single one of these plans has a fixed amount of downloads at a guaranteed speed, before reverting to throttled speeds for the rest of the month. On the cheaper end of the spectrum, Chatr mobile offers a plan between $25-70 , although once the proportion of guaranteed speed downloads is used up, it reverts to 64kbps , which is approximately the speed of dial-up-internet. On the more expensive end, the Rogers Mobile plan comes in at between $85-175 but is much faster when it reverts to a throttle speed of 512kbps .

What are talk-only cell phone plans?

A talk-only cell phone plan typically consists of a monthly prepaid or postpaid billing structure without mobile data that allows a customer to make, send and receive unlimited calls and texts. Koodo Mobile provides such a plan for $15 a month with 100 outgoing minutes a month and unlimited texts.

Who has the best senior cell phone plans?

A senior cell phone plan typically has less data than other plans, emphasizing texts and outgoing minutes. The best value senior cell phone plan at the moment is offered by Cityfone’s Unlimited Talk & Text plan, which features unlimited texts and minutes inside Canada for $22.50 per month . The plan relies on Rogers mobile network, which provides telecom services to more MVNOs than any other mobile network provider in Canada.

Who has the best family bundle cell phone plans?

A family bundle cell phone plan allows customers to add additional cell phone lines to a single payment plan at a reduced rate. The payment structure usually has a set amount of calls, texts and data dedicated to each phone line with an additional shared bundle of data available to phone lines when their set amount of calls, texts or data is exceeded. It is a competitive way of paying for multiple plan plans at once.

Rogers Infinite 25GB data plan features unlimited calls and texts throughout Canada with 25GB of data for $85 per month with the possibility of adding extra phone lines for an additional $55 with 5GB of dedicated data. Alternatively, Rogers also has a plan with 30GB of shareable data for just $190 per month ( $63.33 per line per month). Elsewhere, Telus provides 50GB of data for $80 per line for at least four people with unlimited calls and texts throughout Canada, which amounts to the largest family discount in Canada when data usage is taken into account.

Which cell phone plan has the best parental controls?

Parental controls allow parents to determine what kinds of content their children can access via their smartphones. They can also be used to control how much time children spend on their devices and to what ends, allowing parents to monitor the kind of content their children have access to while ensuring costs do not spiral out of control.

Parental controls are typically not provided by the cell phone carrier itself, but instead are facilitated by a series of apps readily available on both iOs and Android app stores. These apps include the following:

Can I bring my old phone to a new phone plan?

Yes. Almost all cell phone carriers allow for a Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) which is typically more price-competitive than a plan including a device and/or phone upgrades.

How do I port my number to a new cell phone plan?

The Canadian Wireless Code of Conduct guarantees consumers the right to retain their old number when switching to a new plan with the same or different cell phone carrier. The process involved is called ‘port forwarding.’ During this process, it is essential to not cancel your old plan before you have successfully transferred your number to a new plan, otherwise, your old number will go back into circulation.

Many carriers offer this as an option when signing up for a new plan online – just look for the ‘port forward’ option on their website. When the new SIM arrives, go online and login to your self-service account and activate the sim card in order to initiate the transfer. You will normally receive a text message from your old carrier looking for verification that you do want to move your number to a new carrier. Once this message is accepted, the transfer process should commence. As soon as your old SIM stops working and you insert the new one, the transfer should be complete, and your old plan cancelled.

For more information about how each carrier allows for ‘port forwarding’ options, it is always helpful to review each carrier’s dedicated FAQ page which provides more specific information.

How do I cancel my old phone plan?

Most cell phone providers provide a hotline customers can call to cancel their plans. While some plans may involve paying a cancellation fee, the CTRC has capped cancellation fees for consumers who have been on a plan with smartphone financing for three years or longer.

Compare The Best Phone Plans In Canada

Jonathan Standring

Researching the best phone plans in Canada can be exhausting. While there seem to be new mobile phone companies popping up every day, though, the larger providers still have a monopoly.

With all of these companies, large and small, offering various plans with a range of features and prices, how are you supposed to choose the right one?

As with most service providers, not all cell phone plans are created equal. For example, some will offer more data than others, some are pay-as-you-go, some are for calling and texting only, and so on. Your first step to finding the best cell phone plan in Canada is to decide which features you need.

Then, to save time and energy, you can read through all the information we’ve gathered here to help make your decision a bit easier.

  • Cell phone plan comparisons
  • The pros and cons of smaller companies
  • Canada’s cell phone coverage map
  • Getting your cell phone internationally

Comparing the best cell phone plans in Canada

We’ve compared some of the smaller startups who are building their own networks – Freedom and Eastlink – to The Big 3 (which we’ll discuss later).

But before we dive in, there are a few things you should consider when searching for a new plan.

Bring Your Own Device

What’s the deal if you already have your own phone? Do The Big 3 have anything better to offer than the smaller startups?

If you don’t already have a phone, then head over to Kijiji, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace and buy a used one. Getting a used phone can save you some serious cash and free you from a binding contract.

Of course, it’s important to be aware of stolen and illegal cell phones that often circulate on 3rd-party websites. So before purchasing any used phones, you should always input the IMEI at Device Check Canada . You can get the IMEI number by entering *#06# on most devices

If you’ve already been with one of The Big 3, you likely have a device and have spent 2 years on a plan. Now is the time to free yourself from a contract and pay a simple monthly fee. You can get better rates from The Big 3 this way or you might be able to find another company that’s just getting into the market.

Best phone plans in Canada: Sizing them up

Let’s take a look at 3 options: each company’s cheapest plan (including data), the middle ground for price and options, and the biggest plan they have.

Each of the offers listed are based on plans where you bring your own cell phone to the deal. Most of these are build-your-own plans and prices will vary depending on the features you’ve selected.

Also, these monthly plans can be made better by adding multiple phones to your account. Sharing your account with family members (vs. everyone having their own account) can actually reduce the individual monthly cost of each plan.

It should be noted that the government of Canada has something to say about affordable wireless service. As of July 14, 2021, the government requires Bell, Rogers, Telus, and SaskTel to “offer and promote low-cost and occasional-use plans” and lists specifics on the plans that must be offered.

Best Phone Plans in Canada: The Big 3

Let’s start with the largest companies on the market: Bell, Rogers, and Telus.

We’ve done our best to break things down here, but each provider has a different way of building each plan, which makes things a bit confusing.

To keep this simple, we’ve compared the cost for a premium smartphone purchase:

While older model phones from Mortorola and LG are usually the cheapest option you’ll find, we’ve chosen to look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G . It’s still one of the least expensive phones you can get, but it’s not the ultimate cheapest.

We’re looking at purchasing this phone on a 2-year contract.

Bell is the odd one out here, requiring a monthly price that’s more than double Rogers or Telus. And it’s the only provider that requires an eligible plan to go with the phone purchase.

Consider the smaller cell phone companies

While Bell, Rogers, and Telus don’t offer much variation when it comes to competitive pricing, that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to find an alternative among some of the smaller cell phone companies.

But which company is worth committing to?

Freedom Mobile

The drawback with Freedom Mobile is that they’re not exactly available nationwide. Their individual coverage area includes the big city areas of:

  • Alberta, and

They also have variable and nationwide coverage throughout:

  • most of Alberta and Saskatchewan ,
  • southern Ontario and Quebec,
  • most of the Maritime provinces, and
  • certain areas of Newfoundland and Labrador.

If you aren’t located in these areas – the big cities in particular – then these plans aren’t much good to you. You’ll be able to access their partner networks, but you may be charged to get access as the network is still quite small.

Although they have less-than-stellar reviews, unfortunately, their plans seem to be competitive and the data is good. So if you’re in the above mentioned areas, then Freedom Mobile is worth a look.

Public Mobile

Public Mobile operates on the Telus Network. You’ll pay a $10 SIM card fee and $15 per month for their cheapest plan and $40 for 4.5GB of data, which isn’t bad. The $15 plan doesn’t initially come with data, but once you add the autopay feature , you’re given 250MB as a bonus.

And there are some perks:

  • Refer a friend . For every friend you refer who stays with Public Mobile, you get $1 off every 30 days and a one-time $10 credit. That could stack up!
  • Auto-pay . When you pre-authorize payments, you save $2 every 30 days. Plus you’ll get up to 500MB more data with some plans.
  • Helping others . When you answer questions in the Public Mobile Community forums, you earn points that can add up to $20 off every 30 days.
  • Loyalty . Save $1 every 30 days after your first year, $2 every 30 days after your second year, and so on.

With all of these loyalty rewards , you could work yourself down to a free phone plan. But we use the word “work” for a reason – there’s a lot of effort involved.

The cool thing about Eastlink is that they’re building their own infrastructure. Out of all the companies offering discounted plans, they’re the ones who have their own towers.

They also offer extended coverage through their partnerships with major networks across the country.

Their roaming packages are pretty competitive, too. They offer $9/day when travelling to the U.S. and $13/day to more than 90 other international countries.

Cell phone coverage map

The best phone coverage comes from Bell, with Rogers providing the next best coverage.

Just check out the maps below:

Bell Phone Coverage Map

Telus phone coverage map

Telus Phone Coverage Map

The best way to see if you’ll have coverage when purchasing a plan is by going to the actual source. Check the company’s website and see what their coverage is like.

You can also cross-reference this information at Compare Cellular ’s coverage map.

Which companies use the others’ networks?

Telus shares towers with Bell, but operates independently. Koodo and Public Mobile are the only 2 of the providers we’ve mentioned that operate on the Telus network.

Eastlink has partnerships with various networks across the country, but doesn’t disclose which ones. They do claim to have one of “the largest partner networks in the country,” though, so we can assume they have more than just 1 or 2 partners.

Fido is the only one operating on Rogers’ network .

Which network is the biggest?

Out of all these companies, Bell and Telus have the largest networks , though Rogers is a close 2nd.

According to Whistleout.ca , the coverage is as follows:

  • Telus + Bell: 28.8% 4G coverage
  • Rogers: 19.9% 4G coverage
  • Freedom: 0.46% 4G coverage

Are the best phone plans in Canada international ones?

According to an article from Narcity , people are signing up for cell phone plans from France.

Yes, people are actually doing this, so we had to check it out.

Can you get a phone plan from another country?

If you go to Free Mobile , you can see that €19.99 ($29.05) will get you 150GB data in France plus 25GB of roaming in more than 70 locations , including Canada and the US. This plan also features unlimited calls, SMS, and MMS from:

  • South Africa, and
  • New Zealand.

Those who subscribe to this plan also get unlimited calls from mainland France to other mobile phones in mainland France , Canada, USA, China, and landlines in 100 different areas.

According to this, a person could just sign up for just under $30 and have 25GB of data.

Be careful…

The catch is that it violates the fair use policy under the EU regulations. Apparently your provider can charge you extra or even terminate the policy. And if you check Reddit threads, you’ll find people who’ve had this exact experience.

If you choose to do this, know that you are only buying yourself a few months. But if you think you can make it work, try it out and let us know your results.

Which do you think is the best phone plan in Canada?

Are you with one of The Big 3 but considering a switch to a smaller company like Eastlink or Public Mobile? What have your experiences been with researching and trying out various phone plans and companies?

Let us know in the comments below!

Which phone provider is the best in Canada?

It’s hard to say which provider is the best as it really depends on the type of phone and services you’re looking for. The biggest companies that offer the most features and services are Bell, Rogers, and Telus. And Bell and Telus have the largest networks .

Where can I get cheap phone plans in Canada?

Many of the smaller service providers offer inexpensive plans for those who want only the bare bones for features. Eastlink, Public Mobile, Fido, Koodo, and Virgin all have $15 plans, and Freedom Mobile has a $25 plan.

Are the best prepaid phone plans in Canada only from the big providers?

Using a prepaid phone plan can be an easy way to save money, and there are some really economical plans available from smaller providers. Koodo has prepaid plans for as low as $15, and SpeakOut Wireless (from 7/11) has basic rates for only $10. There’s also handy options from – surprisingly – Petro Canada Mobility that allow you to pay for between 30 days and 1 year in advance, depending on your needs.

What are the best family cell phone plans in Canada?

All of The Big 3 ( Bell, Rogers, and Telus ) Canadian mobile service providers have plans with data that can be shared between account members. Bell and Rogers customers save $15 for each member added to the plan. An especially good plan for families is Rogers’ Unlimited Share 40 – it’s made for 2 phone lines and includes 40GB of shareable data.

These are the best Canadian phone plans

TCL Plex hands on white in hand phone call up to ear

If you’re reading this list, odds are you are considering the move to Canada and want to research your options ahead of time. Let’s be honest, Canada doesn’t have the best options for mobile coverage. Like the United States, it’s dominated by three main carriers: Bell, Roger, and Tuls. Thankfully, there are a few smaller options that are quite popular as well.

Canadians won’t find the same unlimited data deals or shockingly low prices as you’ll find in many other countries including most of Europe. With that in mind, you still need a mobile plan in the Great White North. Here’s a look at the best cell phone plans in Canada.

The best cell phone plans in Canada:

  • Freedom Mobile

We’ve gone through the current offerings from major providers available across the country, and we think we’ve landed on the best Canadian phone plans you might want from each one.

Many companies offer plan customization, including family plans and service bundles, so don’t treat this as a complete and unabridged breakdown of offerings.

Editor’s note: We’ll be updating this list of Canada’s best cell phone plans regularly as new ones launch.

bell plans

When it comes to finding the best cell phone plans in Canada, we have to level with you — Bell plans aren’t great ways to save money. In fact, they’re among the most expensive, but at least you can bundle your mobile service with internet, TV, and more to save money.

Bell continuously revamps its lineup, launching and ending plans almost monthly. The most affordable option now goes by the nameEssentials 120, and is priced at CA$55 a month. You get full 4G and 5G access, and 120GB of shareable high-speed data. After you use this up you’ll get throttled speeds of around 512Kbps. If you need more you can upgrade to Essential 125, which costs $5 more and gives you 5GB of extra data.

Coming from the United States and plan to visit back home regularly? The Ultimate 150/155 plans are a good fit, priced at $70 and $75, respectively. You get either 150 or 155GB of shareable data as well as unlimited calls, texts, and data in Mexico and the United States.

rogers

Call it the curse of the major Canadian providers: Rogers plans won’t save you much either. Roger’s cheapest plan is 5G MObile 60GB, which gives you 60GB of non-shareable data at speeds up to 250Mbps. There is also unlimited talking and texting throughout the country.

At $85, 5G Infinite Essential gives you 120GB of data, and unlimited data thereafter at a reduced rate. You also get unlimited international texting, making it easy to stay in touch with friends back home. You also save $20 on every extra line you add.  Need even more? The 5G Infinite Premium plan gives you 150GB of data, as well as unlimited calling, texts, and data in Mexico and the United States.

canada fido plans

Fido plans are the way to go for everyday smartphone use. They offer talk and text or talk, text, and data at very reasonable prices. If you want a way to avoid the Canadian provider curse, Fido might be the way to go.

Like Rogers, Fido has recently revamped its plans, and it now offers a build-your-own approach to phone service. You can choose from Data and Text, Talk and Text, and Talk, Text, and Data plans, and kick things off by selecting your data cap. All plans include unlimited texts. You can get up to 40GB of data for CA$45 a month for 24 months, and CA$60 after the introductory rate. The cheapest plan is the 2GB tier, which will run you CA$37.50 per month.

Need a new device? For a few extra bucks or more per month, you can get a significant discount on a slew of smartphones that Fido has on offer. Fido also has different promotions running throughout the year that are worth exploring.

Fido is also currently waiving long-distance and SMS charges to Ukraine and roaming fees for customers in Ukraine in order to contact loved ones.

canada telus plans

Telus tends to rank alongside Bell and Rogers, though its presence is slightly smaller in Eastern Canada. As such, it has those big-name rates, unfortunately.

There are just two plans: Unlimited 120 5G+ for $95 for one line or as cheap as $80 per line for 4+ users, and Unlimited CAN-US 150 5G+ which starts at $105 and gets as cheap as $90 per line. The former plan has 120GB of data, while the latter plan has 150GB data and unlimited data, talk, and text in the US. There’s also unlimited messaging to anywhere in the world from within Canada.

5. Freedom Mobile

canada freedom plans

Freedom plans are known for being very cheap. Formerly known as Wind, Freedom has limited coverage, but the company is refreshingly candid about its shortcomings. It recognizes it’s not perfect but seeks to offer an affordable alternative to Canadians.

The cheapest cell phone plan Freedom offers Canadians gets you 250MB of LTE-only data for CA$19 per month, though plans scale as high as $65 for its Unlimited 60GB 5G option, which gives you unlimited talk, text, and a 60GB of data. You’ll also have unlimited talk to the US and Mexico from within Canada.

There are quite a few plans overall, though we’d say its mid-end tiers are better deals. After all, you’ll pay just CA$15 more for 10GB of data, versus the CA$19 price on a measely 250MB.

canada koodo plans

Koodo cell phone plans are another way to save money without sacrificing data or coverage. If calling isn’t too important to you, you can get Koodo plans for as little as CA$15 per month and get 250MB of data and 100 minutes. For CA$39 per month right now, you can sign up for a pretty solid standard plan with unlimited calling across the country, unlimited texting, and 10GB of LTE data.

Koodo also offers “shock-free data” on all its data plans. That means you can’t go over your data limit and rack up overage fees. Instead, your data shuts off automatically when you reach your limit. You do get a heads-up before that happens, though, and Koodo will offer you the chance to buy more data. It may not be a game-changer, but shock-free data can avoid some nasty surprises when your bill reaches your inbox at the end of the month.

Koodo is also emphasizing its Tab on each of its plans too. It allows you to put a certain amount of money on your plan towards your next new device, up to $492 per year.

And the winner is…

best corporate cell phone plans canada

There’s no easy calculation to tell you which of these is the best cell phone plan in Canada because these companies offer some seriously different levels of service.

Freedom wins the bargain basement award for its ultra-affordable plans. Freedom Mobile is also the least likely to work everywhere you go or to have as fast of an internet connection — but maybe that’s still worth it to you.

Then there’s the question of service bundles, family plans, and savings on new devices, which can complicate your choice. That doesn’t mean we can’t make a few overarching judgments.

For most Fido and Koodo are going to be the best value, but it really comes down to what you’re looking for.

It will really depend on the situation. For postpaid service, probably not. If you have a prepaid carrier like Fi Wireless that supports international calling and you move to the US-Canada border and plan to go back and forth regularly enough? Yes.

In many cases, yes. You’ll need to look up your exact model and see if it has the same bands used by your potential Canadian carrier, but most major phones sold in the states should work.

Business.org’s 5 best business cell phone plans

At&t: best full-featured plans.

Looking for a broad choice of bells and whistles? As a telecom behemoth, AT&T has plenty of cell phone features and packages to offer a business—around 20 plan variations, small to large. All plans include free US roaming, unlimited talk, and text messages, as well as unlimited texting outside of the country. Basic features like call forwarding, voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, and conference calling also come standard with all AT&T business cell phone plans, along with bring-your-own-phone support.

AT&T's business cell phone plans

Data as of 12/7/22. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

Business Unlimited plan prices start at $35 a month per line, and there is a new perk where unlimited data is included in the unlimited talk and text plan. This means there is no need to worry about overages or data caps.

AT&T business plans can also accommodate up to 10 lines per account, and they come fully loaded with perks—like Stream Saver. This feature optimizes streaming video on your phone to 480p so you can watch webinars on-the-go without dealing with a blurry picture.

Each plan also includes a decent array of iOS and Android smartphone options and even a few good ol’ flip phones. A 15% military veteran discount can be applied to the Business Unlimited plans, as well as AT&T-owned DIRECTV services (because, again, telecom behemoth).

Users are eligible for a discount if they elect for autopay and paperless billing but this discount is only applied until after two pay periods. We don't know why the discount cannot be applied earlier in the billing process but we do find it frustrating.

T-Mobile: Best flexible plans

Not sure exactly what you’ll need in a mobile plan besides future adaptability? T-Mobile, the third-largest wireless service in the US, offers four Magenta® for Business plans, all packed with unique features that set T-Mobile apart from the rest. The German-owned company has also earned a reputation for stellar customer service and was the first to eliminate annual contracts (an idea that stuck—none of the plans reviewed on this page require contracts). In April 2018, the company announced its intention to merge with Sprint under the T-Mobile banner.

T-Mobile's business cell phone plans

Data as of 12/7/22. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *While using AutoPay.

All of T-Mobile’s Business cell phone plans offer the same basic features:

Unlimited talk and text

Unlimited 5G and 4G LTE data on our network

  • Unlimited mobile hotspot
  • Scam Shield

Unlimited calling and texting to Mexico & Canada

Unlimited video streaming

In addition, all T-Mobile Business plans include DIGITS, which allows you to access up to five phone numbers on a single device. That means you could answer calls to your work number and your personal number on one device—no more packing two phones in your bag every day. DIGITS also lets you share your phone number across multiple devices, so you can answer on your phone, smartwatch, tablet, or computer.

T-Mobile users with a Business plan can also add the PlusUp add-on and get extra features, like Voicemail to Text, HD streaming, 20 GB of 4G LTE mobile hotspot data, unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi, caller ID, and double the data speed when roaming internationally.

Keep in mind, though, that T-Mobile’s Business plans are available only on plans with two to 13 lines. If you need more than 13 lines, you’ll need to sign up for the 13+ Plan ($285 per month for 13 lines, plus $25 per month for each additional line).

T-Mobile plans also allow bring-your-own-device convenience, or you can buy phones up front with a single payment (there are nearly 40 iOS and Android phones to choose from).

Now that T-Mobile and Sprint have been merged for almost six months, some significant changes have taken effect. T-Mobile’s website is now the only place businesses can sign up for Sprint or T-Mobile business phone accounts.

Sprint still has an active business website for previous users but all new plans will be sold by T-Mobile on its website.

Verizon: Best growing business plans

Serving over 150 million customers, Verizon isn’t just big, it’s BIG. Such a mobile mammoth might not seem like the obvious choice for a small business, but for what it lacks in a personalized customer service reputation, Verizon more than makes up for by offering every cell phone feature there is, as well as dominant US, and near-dominant global, coverage. Like McDonald’s and Marvel movies, Verizon is everywhere.

Verizon's business cell phone plans

Data as of 12/7/22. Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *With 4+ lines

While business owners can get business cell phone plans with limited data, we recommend choosing an unlimited plan if you have multiple employees (or do a lot of work via cell phone).

Verizon’s Business Unlimited cell phone plans are scalable from four employees up to and over 40. And with plans starting at just $40 per line, Verizon Business Unlimited plans are an attractive option whether you’re running a tiny company with no expansion plans, a medium-sized business with an eye toward growth, or a large enterprise with heavy cell phone requirements.

Verizon Beyond Unlimited plans also include unlimited mobile hotspot use, though your speeds are limited depending on your plan. Plus, you get unlimited calling and texting to Mexico and Canada—not to mention unlimited calling, texting, and data while in those countries. And naturally, you also get unlimited talk and text as part of your Beyond Unlimited package.

Verizon doesn’t skimp on device choices either. There are nearly 100 iOS and Android phones and tablets available—including the Verizon Jetpack, a mobile hotspot device that can connect 10 devices to its 4G LTE network and an additional five to 3G.

If your company requires truly “unlimited” cell phone service and scalability to grow and is in the position to pay for functionality with frills, Verizon Business Unlimited is the way to go. Bare-bones operations, however, might want to look elsewhere.

Each of our recommendations has its strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes the most difficult part about finding a phone system is determining exactly what you need and don't need. The best place to start is separating your needs between installing a new system, replacing a system or expanding system.

If you are having trouble sorting out exactly what your phone needs are, use this tool to help you understand what the best options are for your unique needs.

We are sure you’ve seen the commercials with Ryan Reynolds talking about this new phone carrier business with a fox logo called Mint Mobile. In fact, a lot of Mint customers were drawn to Mint because of Ryan Reynolds Hollywood looks, but that’s not the only thing Mint has to offer.

Mint is inexpensive and transparent, compared to other cell phone carriers with hidden fees and seemingly random regulations.

MintMobile's business cell phone plans

Data as of 12/7 /22 . Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change.

T hese are the prices for new customers and will last up to three months. After the third month, you are eligible to sign up for a 6- or 12-month contract on one of the tiered plans, all less than $35/mo/user, which is astronomically less than other providers.

MintMobile is no fuss, and you really do feel like you must be tricking the rest of the world with its pricing. The only issue is that MintMobile is fairly new, launched in 2015, coverage is not completely everywhere. There are still a couple of coverage gaps in the West, namely Utah, Nebraska, Idaho and Nevada. If you are east of the Rocky Mountains, you are good to go!

Teltik: Best perks plans

If you’re a strapped startup, New Jersey’s Teltik can get you up and running on the cheap. Teltik is a reseller service operating on T-Mobile’s 4G LTE network, meaning it can offer the reliability and reach of a giant provider at smaller-company prices. Teltik also has the advantage of being completely US-based, with 24/7 local customer service that’s not outsourced overseas.

Teltik's business cell phone plans

3 more (non-business) cell phone plans reviewed by business.org.

Teltik appears to have a dozen plans, but they’re mostly just variations of the essential plan that offers all the expected basics. Not coincidentally, the features mirror those of T-Mobile, as they’re on the same network.

The most basic plan starts at $20 a month and includes unlimited calling and texting, mobile hotspot service, and unlimited data—with a 2 GB cap on 4G LTE speeds (meaning your speed gets throttled to 128 Kbps if you use more than 2 GB of data in a month). From there, you can upgrade your plan to include more 4G LTE data and more mobile hotspot data. Upgraded plans cost anywhere from $30 to $40 per month, and they all include one cloud-phone VoIP line—perfect for small businesses looking to save on all their telecommunications needs.

One distinctly entertaining feature (pun intended) of Teltik’s business plans? You get unlimited media streaming from over 40 music services (including Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music) and more than 100 video services (including YouTube, Netflix, and any other channel you can think of). That means you can stream as much TV as you want without it eating into your data. It’s almost as if Teltik doesn’t want you to get any work done.

Another thing you need to know: Teltik doesn’t sell phones. Instead, the company operates on a strict bring-your-own-device basis. Any unlocked phone will work with its network, as will any T-Mobile device, of course. However, you will have to spend $10 plus shipping and handling to buy a new SIM card for each of your devices (unless they’ve already got brand-new, unused T-Mobile SIM cards).

The takeaway

Assess your company’s current cell phone usage, and projected future needs, before diving into any plan. What looks like a great deal could turn out to be more than you actually need—or you may have initially underestimated your business’s cell phone requirements. Also, if your company has both cell phone and regular office phone needs, check into bundling. The larger telecom providers offer both types of phone coverage, and bundling services is an easy way to save money in the long run.

Don’t want to carry around separate phones for work and personal calls? With the right VoIP service, you don’t have to. Check out our favorite business VoIP providers to see which ones offer on-the-go business phone capabilities.

Business cell phone plan FAQs

If you have several employees working outside of the office on a regular basis, desk-bound phones obviously aren’t going to work for them. Some may be only calling and texting while others will be checking email, using GPS navigation, and accessing the internet for work, but a cell phone is a must for employees in the field.

If you’re a one-person operation accountable to only yourself, you could get by with a personal cell plan. Keeping track of multiple employees’ hours, data, and providers, however, would be an extra headache you don’t need. For streamlining and collaboration purposes, a business cell phone plan would be the easier route.

Most of the plans we’ve reviewed here offer unlimited data—domestically, at least—so hitting the data ceiling won’t likely be an issue. But if you want to forecast how much data your business uses every month, providers make data plan estimators available on their websites. Or you could use a third-party calculator app.

BYOD stands for bring your own device . Another common term is BYOP for bring your own phone . These can mean that employees are using their personal phones, tablets, or laptops on their own carrier plans for work or that they’ve put those devices on the company’s plan. The upside? Less expensive than buying devices. The downside? Extra security concerns.

In the annoying absence of Wi-Fi, you can use a cell phone signal to connect a wireless device to the internet by switching on the mobile hotspot option and simply treating it like a Wi-Fi router. For multiple device connections, a dedicated hotspot (such as Verizon’s Jetpack) can provide a faster, and more stable, connection.

How we test cell phone plans

What to look for in a cheap cell phone plan, the best cheap cell phone plans in 2023.

When you buy through our links, Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

The best cheap cell phone plans offer dependable coverage and service speeds at a range of affordable prices. Choosing the right mobile virtual network operator (or MVNO) for you, though, will come down to your budget, your location, and your priorities.

Overall, it's hard to beat our top pick, Mint Mobile's promotion for its three-month prepaid plans , as it offers 5GB, 15GB, 20GB, or "unlimited" data (40GB) to new customers for discounted rates, starting at just $15 per month; for a limited time, you also get three free months of additional coverage through Mint Mobile's Black Friday deal . If you're looking to extend your savings further, we recommend Tello Mobile's Build Your Own plan , which can cost as low as $5 per month.

Our top picks for the best cheap phone plans

Best overall plan: Mint Mobile (Any 3-month plan) - See at Mint Mobile All of Mint Mobile's three-month plans are currently discounted for new customers, so you can get anywhere from 5GB to "unlimited" data (40GB) from our favorite MVNO at low prepaid costs, along with three free months of additional coverage for a limited time.

Best true budget plan: Tello Mobile (Build Your Own plan) - See at Tello Tello's unique Build Your Own plan allows you to customize your data and minutes to your specific needs, and offers a low base price of $5 per month.

Best unlimited plan: Visible Wireless (Visible+ plan) - See at Visible If you're looking for a large amount of monthly data at a reasonable price, the Visible+ plan from Visible Wireless stands alone in offering up to 50GB of guaranteed high-speed data for just $35 per month with a limited-time promotion.

Best international plan: Google Fi Wireless (Flexible plan) - See at Google The Flexible plan at Google Fi Wireless includes international data for the same price as domestic data, along with free international texting and international calling at an affordable rate.

Best overall plan: Mint Mobile (Any 3-month plan)

best corporate cell phone plans canada

Pros: Easy plan management, reliable coverage on T-Mobile's network, exceptional customer support

Cons: No discounts for multiple lines

Mint Mobile's prepaid plans for three, six, or twelve months offer affordable options for customers to easily manage all lines on their plan in one place and adjust their data allotments at any time.

The overall experience as a customer is what makes Mint Mobile stand out among its competitors — its user-friendly setup and app experience, with readily accessible support and FAQs, make it an easy choice in addition to its inviting pricing.

Your best point of entry into the Mint Mobile landscape is the MVNO's current new customer promotion that sets each of its three-month prepaid plans at discounted rates and includes  Mint Mobile's Black Friday deal for three additional free months of coverage. The promotion starts at just $15 per month for 5GB of data and goes up to $30 per month for the "unlimited" plan, which offers 40GB of monthly data (subject to deprioritization in congested areas), with slower speeds once you've hit that cap.

After your promotional coverage is up, however, the plans reset to their standard rates, and any of Mint's 12-month plans will provide the most savings in the long run. All are great deals, and in particular, the 5GB ($15 per month) and 15GB ($20 per month) plans are well-priced considering the competition.

Consider your data usage patterns before signing up, but know that you can change your plan at any time with no added cost, and make sure to keep tabs on our guide to the best Mint Mobile plans and deals if you plan to stick around.

Best true budget plan: Tello Mobile (Build Your Own plan)

best corporate cell phone plans canada

Pros: Data and minutes customization per line, free hotspot tethering

Cons: No discounts for multiple lines, no international roaming options, not ideal for high data users

Tello Mobile's plans are the cheapest we can recommend, and they offer the most customization.

With Tello's Build Your Own plan in particular, you can adjust the minutes and data allotment for each line on your account, making it a great choice to cover the basics for a teen, grandparent, student, or anyone who uses a minimum amount of data or is simply on a budget.

As you build your own plan, you choose your monthly data amount (from no data to 500MB, 1GB, 2GB, 5GB, 10GB, or unlimited) and your monthly minutes (none, 100, 300, 500, or unlimited), the combination of which adds up to $5 per month at the cheapest and $29 per month at the most expensive.

The Build Your Own plan is particularly nice if you want to specify a data allotment per line — for example, setting data limits for a teen who just got their first phone while allowing them unlimited minutes.

Best unlimited plan: Visible Wireless (Visible+ plan)

best corporate cell phone plans canada

Pros: Dependable coverage on Verizon's network, 50GB of guaranteed high-speed monthly data, unlimited hotspot data

For high-speed data and extensive coverage, Verizon has your back with Visible Wireless. Our top pick for a budget unlimited plan is Visible's upgraded Visible+ plan , which is available (until January 2, 2024) at a promotional rate of $35 per month for six months — a $10 discount from its typical rate of $45 per month, and one of the best Visible deals we've seen .

While the Visible+ plan has the highest price point of all the MVNOs we've included in this list, even with its current promotion, it also provides by far the most high-speed monthly data and the closest approximation to "unlimited" data, as it guarantees 50GB of high-speed data before you experience any form of deprioritization.

Most of the nominally "unlimited" plans from MVNOs — including Visible's base unlimited plan ($25 per month) — offer data that is subject to deprioritization at any time behind the higher-paying customers of the MVNO's backing network. If you're in an area with a lot of network congestion, you could encounter deprioritized speeds at any time on such an "unlimited" plan, but you won't see any deprioritization within your monthly allotment of  50GB of high-speed data on the Visible+ plan.

The Visible+ plan also provides extended coverage with 5G "Ultra Wideband" areas, though Verizon's standard coverage (and the Visible base plan's coverage) is already very good. Before signing up, make sure to check Visible's coverage map to ensure you're covered.

Best international plan: Google Fi Wireless (Flexible plan)

best corporate cell phone plans canada

Pros: International data roaming, low-cost international calling and texting, additional coverage for "Designed for Fi" devices

Cons: Data prices can rack up quickly, less coverage and support for iPhones

Google Fi Wireless has three plans at different pay tiers, each offering access to coverage by T-Mobile and benefits like VPN usage and select smartwatch compatibility — with enhanced coverage and support for a list of Android phones that Google has deemed "Designed for Fi."

Google Fi Wireless' lowest-tier Flexible plan allows for pay-what-you-use data at $10 per GB per month, plus the base price of $20 per phone line, and it's the best international budget plan for those traveling or staying abroad from the US.

The Flexible plan offers international roaming for the same price as domestic data usage at $10 per GB, so you won't have to worry about being charged more while using your phone internationally. Even if you end up using a lot of data while you're away, a feature called Bill Protection, unique to the Flexible plan, caps your monthly cost at $80 for a single line to prevent exorbitant fees from overages.

Texting is free internationally in more than 200 countries on the Flexible plan, and international calls are available at the low rate of $0.20 per minute.

In our testing, we spend at least a week with a specific plan from a phone carrier, often longer, and primarily assess the quality of the plan and carrier by the following criteria:

  • Plan offerings and flexibility: We take into account the pricing and features included in a carrier's range of plans, and assess how flexible the carrier is in allowing you to switch out of or between its plans.
  • Coverage area:  For MVNOs, we note the approximate coverage area provided by the network or networks backing a budget carrier, and evaluate whether particular locations consistently match up with their purported coverage type (e.g., 5G or 4G/LTE).
  • Service reliability and speeds:  In consistent testing locations, we assess the reliability of phone and video calls, note how fast videos and apps load over cellular data, and with MVNOs, mark any apparent effects of deprioritization on service speeds.
  • Customer support:  We make a holistic assessment of a carrier's customer support system and online (or in-person) user experience for setup, use, and troubleshooting.

We also take into account secondary considerations such as ongoing discounts and any other notable perks or outstanding features.

best corporate cell phone plans canada

If you're looking to spend less money each month on a cell phone plan, you have no shortage of options, as affordable carriers have proliferated in recent years.

The best cheap cell phone plan for you will primarily reflect your needs for monthly data and minutes, the constraints of your budget, and the coverage of your local area by the network or networks backing a particular plan.

We set a few baseline criteria in choosing plans for this guide, in that all of the plans listed above cost less than $50 per month and, as with most MVNO plans, do not require a contract.

Before signing up for a service, take a granular look at the coverage map that an MVNO should make readily accessible on their website — marking the US network range of its backing carrier — and appraise the coverage of your location to ensure dependable service.

You should also know that budget carriers often offer evolving discounted rates that make their plans even more affordable. For instance, the best Mint Mobile plans are frequently available at significant deals , and you can find some of the best deals on the market from Visible's two phone plans .

  • OliverQueenJr I wish this were true. I jumped at this sale and at least what customer service to me is that the deal won’t cover the entire purchase that they’ll only cover up to $1,000 if you have one of the qualifying phones to trade in. Since the pro max is $1,199.99 & while I’d get the full $1,000 for trading in my 12 Pro Max & so i’d still have an additional $8 more added to my bill after the credits as well as the additional $5 a month my bill would go up in order to even be considered eligible. $13 a month for 24 months adds up. I could’ve handled one but both are too much. I wish T-Mobile would be held accountable for their wording. “On us” and placing that above each of the different 15 models implies that it’ll cost the consumer nothing (aside the universally know fee off tax of the full price of the item) and that it implies to all model. Yes if you have the proper trade in you can get any of the 15s except Pro Max with that one they’ll only provide the base 15 the plus and the pro Reply
