- Business Activity Model (BAM)
A Business Activity Model (BAM) builds on the ‘Transformation’ element of the CATWOE technique and allows you to construct the high-level business activities that capture the world view of a particular stakeholder. The model shows these high-level activities and the logical dependencies between them. This conceptual, or idealised, view can then be compared with the actual situation to identify areas where improvements could be made. BAMs from different stakeholders can also be compared and a consensus model drawn up.
What is a business activity model? Business activity models (BAMs) are conceptual models that depict a stakeholder’s perspective on what the organisation does.
Why use business activity models? BAMs require you to think about the activities that each stakeholder considers the business carries out. Initially, there will be one BAM for each distinct perspective, but ultimately you should look to combine these models, and achieve a consensus BAM (agreed view).
How do you use business activity models? When creating a BAM, there are five main categories of activates that the user needs to consider and map out:
- Doing: These activities are at the heart of the model, and are derived straight from the CATWOE transformation aspect, which reflects the organisation's principal business activities. There should only ever be one or two doing activities in each BAM, for example, ‘sell product’ or ‘provide service’.
- Enabling: These activities ensure that the resources and facilities needed for the 'doing' activities are available, for example, recruiting staff, ordering training materials, developing training courses or ordering products.
- Planning: In order to complete the doing and enabling activities, planning activities must be considered beforehand. These types of activities can include 'define number of staff' or 'define product range' for example.
- Monitoring: These are the activities that will be setting performance expectations, for example, 'monitor data analytics', 'monitor employee performance' or 'monitor customer service feedback'.
- Control: These activities come last and are based on the monitoring activity outcomes. If the monitoring activities reveal that performance is not what was expected, then the control activities may be required to institute the necessary actions.
What happens next? Hopefully you should be able to combine all the models and achieve a consensus BAM. If so, you will be able to move onto modelling the business processes (How these activities are completed) and then proceed onto gap analysis.

Business activity patterns: A new model for collaborative business applications
2000, IBM Systems Journal
Human-Computer Interaction – INTERACT 2009
Abstract Activity Explorer is the first product from IBM that supports the notion of activity-centric collaboration. This new collaboration paradigm organizes and integrates resources, tools, and people around the computational concept of a work activity, with the goal of increasing work quality and efficiency. In essence, activity-centric collaboration is an important and compelling example of contextual collaboration. Activity Explorer emerged from a multiyear research effort on activity-centric collaboration.

Current trends in collaborative knowledge management emphasize the importance of inter- and intra-organizational business process support. Enactment of business processes has primarily been a domain of workflow management systems. In this paper we propose a hybrid architecture for reconciliation of knowledge management and workflow management systems in order to support process participants in organizations, who are increasingly distributed and need to share and distribute knowledge artifacts. Today one pressing challenge is to utilize software as to create, share, and exchange (knowledge) work in collaborative knowledge activities across locations, while still being business process aware. This paper develops a conceptual framework, discusses a software architecture, and presents examples of a software system implementation for activity-based knowledge management for global project teams.
Activity-Based Computing (ABC) has been proposed as an organisational structure for local desktop management and knowledge work. Knowledge work, however, typically occurs in partially overlapping subgroups and involves the use of multiple devices. We introduce co-Activity Manager, an ABC approach that (i) supports activity sharing for multiple collaborative contexts, (ii) includes collaborative tools into the activity abstraction and (iii) supports
Nowadays tracking data from activity checkpoints of unit transactions within an organization’s business processes becomes an important data resource for business analysts and decision-makers to provide essential strategic and tactical business information. In the context of business process-oriented solutions, business-activity monitoring (BAM) architecture has been predicted as a major issue in the near future of the business-intelligence area. In this paper we address an approach to derive an activity warehouse model based on BAM requirements. We analyze different perspectives based on the requirements, such as business process management, key performance indication, process and state based-workflow management, macro and micro level data. The implementation shows that data stored in an activity warehouse is able to efficiently monitor business processes in real-time and provide a better real-time visibility of business processes.

Abstract. Recently, research on workflow activity patterns emerged in order to increase the reuse of recurring business functions (e.g., request for task execution, notification, approval and decision). While workflow patterns have been defined for several aspects related to process execution, recurrent business functions have been only partially addressed by existing work. Related to this challenge we proposed a set of seven workflow activity patterns in previous work. In this paper we report on the results of several case studies we performed in Brazilian and European companies in order to investigate how frequently the activity patterns occur in real-world process models. We further formalize the identified activity patterns using π−calculus. This formalization as well as our analysis results are applied in the development of a BPM tool fostering the reuse of business functions specifications. 1.
