Static IP Address for Xbox One

If you are having a difficult time joining chats or multiplayer matches on your Xbox One it may be due to your network having a Strict or Moderate NAT Type. To change your NAT Type from Strict or Moderate to Open you will need to assign a permanent IP address to your console and then forward some ports in your router. This guide should help you solve this common networking problem and get you back to enjoying your game.

Assigning a permanent IP address to your Xbox One ensures that your console always has the same internal IP address even after it is rebooted. Some routers allow you to manually assign an IP address, so you should check to see if that is an option in your router. If your router does not allow manual assignments, you can set up a static IP address in your Xbox One console.

Assign a Static IP Address to your Xbox One In Your Router

In your router, look for a way to manually assign an IP address. This process will differ depending on the specific router that you have. If you find this feature in your router, simply assign a permanent IP address to your Xbox One (in your router) and no changes are required in your Xbox One console. Your router will take care of always assigning your Xbox One the same internal IP address which will function the same as a static IP.

If you have a router that does not allow you to manually assign IP addresses, you will need to set up a static IP address within your Xbox One console. Follow these steps to assign an IP address in your router:

Assign Your Xbox a Permanent IP Address

You can try to permanently assign your Xbox One to the IP address that it is currently using. You can find the current IP address under advanced settings in the Xbox One Dashboard menu. To find the IP address , power up your Xbox One console and follow these steps:

  • Go to the home screen and push the menu button on the controller
  • Select Settings

xbox one dashboard settings

  • Select Network

xbox one settings network

  • Select Advanced settings

xbox one network settings advanced settings

  • In the IP settings section you should see the IP address listed. (See screenshot below.) Write down this number because you will need to enter it into your router later.
  • You should see Wired MAC address or Wireless MAC address listed under IP settings as well. The MAC address of your Xbox One console is a unique number and every console is assigned a different one from the factory. Write down the 12-digit address for the one that you are using (wired or wireless.)In your router, you will need to assign this MAC address to the IP address you have chosen (see step 2 for instructions.)

xbox one advanced settings ip address mac address

Login To Your Router

Login to your router (through your computer) and permanently assign your Xbox One to the IP address you found in step 1. For help logging in to your router visit our login guides .

Here is an example of a router that allows you to manually assign IP addresses.

ASUS IP manually assign

In this Asus router, there is a box to type the IP address into and then a drop down menu for the MAC address . Use the numbers that you wrote down in step 1 of this guide. In this example, after typing in the addresses there is an "Add" button to click.

Some routers do not allow you to assign IP addresses within the DHCP range of the router (the range of addresses that your router automatically assigns to devices on your network.) If this is the case with your router, you will need to choose an IP address to assign that is outside the DHCP range of your router. See steps 2 through 4 of the following guide for help with choosing an IP address that is outside your router's DHCP range.

Test Your Xbox Network Connection

After you have assigned your Xbox One to a specific IP address, test the connection from your Xbox One Dashboard to make sure it is working. To test the connection:

  • From the Xbox One Dashboard, choose Settings
  • Choose Test network connection

xbox one test connection with arrow

  • Wait while the test runs. It will check your connection to make sure your console is communicating with your network.
  • "It's all good" should be displayed after the test is finished.

Forward Ports in your Router for your Xbox

Forwarding ports, or opening ports, in your router points all traffic coming in on certain ports to a specific internal IP address. To get an Open NAT Type, you will want to forward the following ports to the IP address of your Xbox One:

  • TCP: 53, 80, 3074
  • UDP: 53, 88, 500, 3074, 3544, 4500

For help with port forwarding you can visit our router guides .

Test Your Xbox Network Connection Again

After you have assigned a permanent IP address to your Xbox One console and forwarded the correct ports in your router, you can test your network connection. To test the connection from the Xbox One Dashboard:

  • Wait while the test runs.
  • The results of the test should tell you if your NAT Type is Open, Moderate, or Strict.

xbox one network settings open nat with arrow

Your network connection should now have an Open NAT Type. If your network status is set to NAT Type: Open, congratulations to you! This a common networking problem that can be quite difficult to solve. Good job making it through the guide and optimizing your network. Now you should be able to enter into more matches and chat with all of your gaming buddies. Now, go enjoy your game!

If you are not able to get an Open NAT Type, check to see that you have entered in the correct information. Double check the data that you entered for the IP address and MAC address.

If you are still having difficulty getting an Open NAT Type check to see that your network is set up properly. You may have more than one router on your network. To determine if there is more than one router on your network you can run our free Router Detector software. It is important to only have one router on your network otherwise it is difficult to configure your network without running into problems.

Set up a Static IP address in your Xbox One Console

If you have a router that does not allow you to manually assign internal IP addresses, follow these instructions to set up a static IP address in your Xbox One console:

Find Your Current Xbox IP Address

Find out what IP address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings your Xbox One console is currently using. To find this info:

xbox one network advanced settings

  • In the IP settings section, you should see the IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, Primary DNS, Secondary DNS, and MAC address listed. (See screenshot below.) Write all of these numbers down, you will need to enter them in later.

xbox one settings network advanced settings ip settings

Login to Your Router

Next, login to your router (through your computer) and note the DHCP range your router uses. The DHCP range is the group of numbers that your router uses to assign internal IP addresses to devices on your network. For help logging in to your router visit our router guides and/or our guides on finding your router's IP address .

Here is a screenshot of a Linksys router. The DHCP range is circled in red.

linksys dhcp range with circle

Choose an IP Address for your Xbox

You will need to pick a number between 2 and 254 that is outside of your router's DHCP range to assign to your Xbox One.

In the example above, this Linksys router uses the range 100-149 to assign IP addresses to devices on the internal network. I chose to assign my Xbox to 201 . The IP address that I am going to assign to my Xbox is 192.168.1.201 . (Be sure to use the first three numbers that are in your router's IP address, also known as gateway.) Here are a few more examples for you:

  • If your router's DHCP range is 200-254 you could choose a number between 2 and 50 to try.
  • If your router uses 50-200, you could try a number between 2 and 49.

Use Ping to Find to Find an Available IP Address

To find out if this number is available ping the address using the Windows Command Prompt.

To open the Command Prompt:

  • Click on the Windows Start menu
  • Type cmd into the dialog box (in the Windows start menu)

start menu dialog box with circle

  • Then click on cmd.exe (which should be listed over the dialog box). A black window with white text should open.

start menu cmd.exe with circle

To check whether or not the IP address is available for you to assign:

  • Hit the space bar
  • Then type in the IP address you want to check. Hit Enter .

cmd ping ip with circle

If you ping an address and do not receive a reply, then the IP address is available for you to assign. (See example above.) If you do receive a reply then that IP address is in use and you will have to try a different one. Below is an example showing an address that is already in use.

cmd ip ping busy with circle

Enter Static IP Address in Xbox

Next, go to your Xbox One console to set the internal IP address to the number you have chosen.

  • From the home menu, select Settings
  • select IP settings

xbox one advanced settings ip settings

  • Select Manual

xbox one ip setting manual ip

  • Type in the IP address you have chosen and select Enter

xbox one ip settings manual ip address keyboard

  • Type in the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0). This should be one of the numbers that you wrote down at the beginning of this guide. Select Enter
  • Type in your gateway which is your router's internal IP address and select Enter
  • Go back to the advanced settings screen

xbox one advanced settings dns settings

  • Choose DNS settings

xbox one change settings primary dns

  • Type in the Primary DNS address (from the list that you made in step 1) then select Enter
  • Type in the Secondary DNS address and select Enter
  • On the Advanced settings screen choose Save

Test Xbox Network Connection

Test your network connection. In the Xbox One Dashboard:

  • Go back to the Network settings screen, choose Test network connection
  • The test will run and check your network connection status. Wait while the test runs.
  • When the test is finished you should see the "It's all good" message.

Forward Ports in Your Router for Your Xbox

Forwarding ports, or opening ports, in your router points all traffic coming in on certain ports to a specific internal IP address. To get an Open NAT Type, you will want to forward the following ports (in your router) to the IP address of your Xbox One:

For help with port forwarding you can visit our port forwarding guides .

Xbox 360 Slim Internal Wifi Error, Couldnt obtain IP address from router/modem.

Report abuse, replies (4) .

QuiCkz Ninja

  • Xbox Ambassador

Error: Can't obtain an IP address from your router or modem

Note  Before you reset your Xbox 360 console's settings, make sure that you document the current dashboard settings in case you need to restore your settings later. You will also need your wireless network password. Reset your Xbox 360 console's network settings to the default settings. Here's how to do this:

  • Turn off your console.
  • Wireless connection only:  Unplug the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter from the USB port.
  • Turn on your console.
  • Press the  Guide  button on your controller, go to  Settings , and select  System Settings .
  • Select  Network Settings .
  • Select  Wired Network  or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.
  • Select  Configure Network .
  • On the  Additional Settings  tab, select  Restore to Factory Defaults . Note  This will only reset the network settings. This will not affect any other console settings.
  • Wireless connection only:  Plug the Xbox 360 Wireless Networking Adapter back into the USB port (if you are using an adapter).
  • Turn on your console.  Wireless only:  You will receive a message to configure wireless settings. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to your wireless network.
  • Test your Xbox LIVE connection. To do this, press the  Guide  button on your controller, go to  Settings , and select  System Settings . Select  Network Settings , select  Wired Network  or your wireless network name (if you are prompted to do so), and then select  Test Xbox LIVE Connection .

If you receive the same error message, please try the next solution. If your console is connected directly to your modem, please see solutions 5 and 6, below.

  • Turn off your Xbox 360 console and your network hardware (such as your modem and your router).
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Turn on your modem and wait for it to come online. (This may take approximately one minute.)
  • Turn on the next piece of hardware (for example, a router), and wait another minute.
  • Repeat step 4 for any additional network hardware.
  • Turn on your Xbox 360 console, press the  Guide  button on your controller, go to  Settings , and select  System Settings .
  • Select  Test Xbox LIVE Connection .

If you receive the same error message, try the next solution.

If you are using a wireless connection, make sure that you are connecting to your wireless network and have entered the correct password. An incorrect password might make it look like your console is connected to your wireless network, but your console will not receive an IP address.

  • On your console, press the  Guide  button on your controller, go to  Settings , and select  System Settings .
  • Select your wireless network name, and then press  Y  on your controller to disconnect from your wireless network.
  • Select your wireless network name and enter the wireless password when prompted.
  • Select  Configure Network . Note  If the IP address begins with 169 or appears as 0.0.0.0, your console is not getting a valid IP address. Continue following the steps below, and make sure to enter the correct wireless network password.
  • On the  Basic Settings  tab, select  Wireless Mode .
  • Select  Scan for Networks .
  • Enter your wireless network password, and then select  Done .
  • Press  B  on your controller, and then test your connection.

If you receive the same error message, please try the next solution.

Because automatic IP settings didn't work, let's try setting the IP address manually. First, we need to obtain your computer’s IP settings.

  • On your computer, click  Start , type  cmd  in the search box, and then press ENTER. Note  If you're using Windows XP, click  Start , click  Run , type  cmd , and then press ENTER.
  • At the prompt, type  ipconfig , and then press ENTER.
  • IP address (or IPv4 address)
  • Subnet mask
  • Default gateway
  • Make up a unique IP address for your Xbox 360 console and write it down. For example, add 10 to the last number of your computer's default gateway address. (For example, if your computer's address is 192.168.1.1, use 192.168.1.11 for your console's IP address.) Note  Each IP address on your network must be unique.

Now let's set your console's IP settings.

  • Select  Wired Network  or the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.
  • elect  Configure Network .
  • On the  Basic Settings  tab, select  IP Settings .
  • Select  Manual .
  • Select  IP Address .
  • Enter the unique IP address that you made up, and then select  Done .
  • Select  Subnet Mask , enter your computer's subnet mask, and then select  Done .
  • Select  Gateway , enter your computer's default gateway, and then select  Done .
  • Select  Done .
  • Press  B  on your controller and then test your connection again. Note  If you receive a DNS error at this point, please see Solution 3 in the following article: 978847   Error: Your DNS server can't resolve Xbox LIVE server names

If you receive the same IP error, try the next solution.

Some Internet service providers allow devices to access the Internet, based on the MAC address of the device. If your computer can access the Internet by using your modem but your Xbox 360 console cannot, your console might need to use the same MAC address as your computer.

  • On your computer, click  Start , type  cmd , and then press ENTER. Note  If you're using Windows XP, click  Start , click  Run , type  cmd  , and then press ENTER.
  • At the command prompt, type  ipconfig /all , and then press ENTER.
  • Find your network connection (for example, "Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Network Connection"), and look for a line that begins with "Physical Address."
  • On your console, go to  My Xbox , and then select  System Settings .
  • On the  Additional Settings  tab, select  Advanced Settings .
  • Select  Alternate MAC Address .
  • Enter your computer's MAC address, and then select  Done .
  • Press the  B  button on your controller, and then test your connection.

If you enter a user name and password (known as PPPoE settings) to connect to the Internet on your computer, you must enter this information on your Xbox 360 console. Here's how:

  • Select  User Name .
  • Enter your user name, and then select  Done .
  • Now enter your password and service name. Note  If you don't know your user name, password, or service name, please contact your Internet service provider (ISP).

Your router or gateway can automatically give your console an IP address by using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Note  If DHCP is not enabled on your router or gateway, the IP address for your Xbox 360 console will begin with 169 or appear as 0.0.0.0. You can see your console's IP settings, do the following:

  • On the  Basic Settings  tab, select  IP Settings .

If your network hardware does not have DHCP turned on, your console IP address will be either 0.0.0.0 or will begin with 169.

  • Sign in to your router's web-based configuration page to check the DHCP setting. Refer to your router's documentation for help turning on DHCP.
  • If you change the DHCP setting, restart your Xbox 360 console and network hardware.
  • Test your Xbox LIVE connection. To do this, press the  Guide  button on your controller, go to  Settings , and select  System Settings . Select  Network Settings , select  Wired  or your wireless network name (if you are prompted to do so), and then select  Test Xbox LIVE Connection .

If turning on DHCP does not resolve the problem, please try the next solution.

If the previous solutions did not fix the problem, try the following:

Wireless routers and gateways can prevent unauthorized access by using a feature that is known as MAC filtering. If MAC filtering is turned on for your router or your gateway, your Xbox 360 console won't be able to connect to Xbox LIVE. To connect, you'll have to obtain the MAC address of your console and add it your router/gateway settings. To obtain the MAC address of your console

  • Select the name of your wireless network, if you are prompted to do so.

Write down the MAC address that is shown on the screen (for example: 0017FAD7CD80).

Now, check your router or gateway to see whether MAC filtering is turned on. If MAC filtering is turned on, add your console's MAC address to the router or gateway setup page. Check your hardware documentation to determine how to do this. If this did not resolve the problem, try the next solution.

Connect your Xbox 360 console to your router or to your gateway by using a network cable. Here's how to do this:

  • Plug one end of a network cable into the back of your console and the other end into a port on your router or on your gateway.
  • To test your Xbox LIVE Connection on the console, press the  Guide  button on your controller, go to  Settings , and select  System Settings . Select Network Settings , and then select  Test Xbox LIVE Connection .

If this did not resolve the problem, try the next solution.

Try connecting your Xbox 360 console to your modem instead of connecting it to a router or to a gateway. Here's how to do this:

  • Plug one end of a network cable into the back of your console and the other end into your modem.
  • If your ISP gave you a PPPoE user name and a password, you will need to enter this information on your console. For information about how to do this, please see  solution 6  above.
  • Make sure that your IP settings are set to automatic. To learn how to reset your IP settings to automatic, see  solution 1 .
  • To test your Xbox LIVE Connection, press the  Guide  button on your controller, go to  Settings , and select  System Settings . Select  Network Settings , and then select  Test Xbox LIVE Connection .

This step helps determine the cause of the problem, but is not meant to be a permanent solution. Try a different cable In rare cases, the cable can be the source of the problem. Use a different network cable to connect your Xbox 360 console to your network hardware. If you don't have another network cable, temporarily use the network cable that your computer is using.  If you can connect to Xbox LIVE when you use a wired connection, there is a problem with the configuration of your router or your gateway. Contact the manufacturer of your router or of your gateway for help.  If you cannot connect to Xbox LIVE by using a modem connection, there might be a problem with your Internet connection. Contact your Internet service provider (ISP) for help.  If you receive the same error message, please contact  Xbox Support .
