Kitchen Table Connections (or 5 Ideas to Re-Envision Homework)

Rather than mindless or irrelevant busywork, homework should invite students to learn what they can from their home life and take it back to school.

photo of a young student

I don't need to read the newspapers or the latest Edutopia guest blog to encounter the great homework debate. I need only sit down at my kitchen table on any given afternoon to identify with both sides of the argument. On one hand, I can see that homework extends learning outside the classroom and provides extra opportunities for practice and scholarship. But I can also sympathize with opponents of homework who argue that it cuts into family time and is too often meaningless and rote.

I'm an educator and a mom of four school-aged children. I live this debate. But, because I wear both hats, I've learned from experience that there's great potential in homework when the learning flows in both directions . Too often, homework is only about practicing at home what students have learned at school. But, in my view, homework becomes the most meaningful when it invites students to learn what they can from their home life and take it back to school. Here are some of the insights that I've gleaned from experiences at my kitchen table.

1. Foster Encounters

One of my favorite homework assignments of all time invited my second-grade son to ask someone for their story about living through a major weather event. At a young age, he and his classmates had to develop questions and seek answers while practicing their communication and interpersonal skills. Other children in his class talked to neighbors down the street, Skyped with grandparents in their native languages, and reminisced with parents about hunkering down in the basement. No two students came into class with the same answers to report. They all made connections between their life at school and their life at home. Why don't more homework assignments require students to encounter their community and learn from people they know? Teachers, keep these kinds of assignments coming!

2. Promote Metacognitive and Organizational Skills

I appreciate it when homework isn't just about the assignment, but explicitly about life skills as well. When my oldest son came home two years ago with a new homework "system," it didn't take long for me to realize its value. Each Monday, his folder included a chart with the daily homework assignments for the week. Each assignment had a little empty square next to it begging to be filled with a check mark. Now my son had a tool at home to help him measure whether he'd taken care of business. It was so simple, and yet so effective. The teacher tallied the class check marks to reinforce the value of practice and effort.

Here’s a great example of this universal homework system in action in a first-grade classroom:

3. Value What's Also Important

Several teachers at the school are now using the checkbox homework system, and the charts are getting more creative. Each day includes an empty box that students get to check for playing outside! What other habits and skills can we value through homework?

  • Say "thank you" to someone that you encounter this evening.
  • Sing a song.
  • Watch the news for five minutes.

4. Build Stamina for Important (Not Mindless) Skills

Every Thursday for 26 painful weeks, my kindergarten-aged child had to find ten items from a magazine or newspaper that started with the letter of the week. It was sheer torture and, I would argue, of minimal value. It's an example of the mindless or rote assignments that critics of homework love to cite.

In contrast, inspired by the work of Professor Lucy Calkins at Columbia University , my son's third-grade teacher decided to shake up her language arts homework. Every night's assignment was the same. Students had to write her a personal letter about something that they read that day at home. Their letter could be about a novel, a magazine article, or a catalogue that caught their eye. The letters never came home with red pen marks. It wasn't about perfect mechanics. It was about communicating with a reader -- their beloved teacher -- and developing stamina for writing.

By the end of the year, my son could churn out a one-page letter in a matter of minutes. Writing became so natural to him that he had the excess energy to fine-tune his mechanics. In the spring, I spoke to the teacher about how much growth I saw in his writing skills because of the letter-writing homework. She replied, "And didn't we get a great window into his world when we read them!" Yes, oh yes, we did! Once again, homework encouraged connection.

5. Encourage Conversation

I love Friday afternoons. The school week is done. For our family, it's a time to hang up backpacks and briefcases and enjoy an evening together, in part, because there's no homework to think about. But one year, through her blog, one of my children's teachers began sending home Friday homework for the parents! It usually began like this: "Ask your children the following three questions this weekend..." What followed were specific questions related to what the class had learned, wrestled with, or laughed about; or fun questions about a visitor, story, or project. Gone were the days when I asked, "So, what did you do at school today?" and my children mumbled, "Nothing." Those simple discussion starters (that likely took the teacher just moment to write) gave me precious opportunities for conversation with my child.

No doubt homework can be a chore. But at its best, homework can also build a bridge between students' home lives and school lives. Let's start designing more homework to strengthen these connections.

Dining Room Makeover – Homework/School Work Station

Whether your children are going back to school, being home schooled, or participating in online learning, they’ll need a spot to feel inspired to do schoolwork and homework. Are you trying to keep their school work off the kitchen table? Why not turn your dining room into a homework station with these important supplies.

Turn Your Dining Room into a Homework Station

We’ve decided to sign our boys up for the online learning option in our school district. (I have great empathy for anyone who has to make the tough decision on where to school kids this year. This was a decision made based on lots of discussions with other parents, our children, and friends that are teachers.)

If we didn’t carve out a dedicated spot to work, our boys would either sit in bed all day, or spread out all over the kitchen table. In the past, all the books and notebooks ended up on the kitchen table until I asked my sons to put away their homework in time to serve dinner. I’ll admit, some nights I didn’t ask, but barked orders. Can you relate?

Besides cluttering the table we eat at, the kitchen table was not a space without distractions. Like most kitchens, ours is the hub of activity after 5pm. Brother may be watching TV in the adjacent living room, hubby might be on a phone, and I am usually cooking. Obviously, it wasn’t the best location for focused studying and work. Two years ago, after moving pencils and books off the kitchen table (for the umpteenth time), I came up with this plan:

Operation Dining Room Converted to Homework Station

dining room makeover into homework station

The idea was to create a space so organized and inviting that my boys would create better work habits and be able to plow through their school work efficiently. Here’s how I achieved the perfect school or homework station and freed up our kitchen table for other things…like eating!

Creating the Perfect Homework Station

If you create a space that is clean, organized, and comfortable; you can set your child up for good work habits from the start. Having a space that is neat prevents distractions and keeps your child more focused. Personally, I have a hard time working in a messy space. Normally I have to clear my desk completely before I can start writing or taking on a focused task.

To clear the clutter, put writing utensils and other necessary supplies in the center of the table in jars or trays. This puts things at your student’s fingertips and prevents the need to get up and get off track. (Obviously, sharpen those pencils ahead of time, and add eraser tops to any worn pencils.)

You can use any tray or even an old tool box as a utensil organizer:

Papers Galore

In the center of the table is a paper tray filled with lots of looseleaf paper and 3×5 cards. I also salvaged paper from half-used spiral binders. My sons helped me tear the pages out and trim the ragged edges with a paper cutter. Now we have an endless supply of scratch paper and I don’t feel guilty having to throw away half-used notebooks.

The non-essential supplies are nearby on our dining room hutch.

A dish corrals the little things in one space keeping them neat and organized. Earbuds are also stored here for my teenagers who love to listen to music while they work (or maybe to help tune out brother or Dad on his Zoom calls.)

Proper Chairs

Making a space cozy and comfortable can be as easy as pulling up some upholstered dining chairs (if the seats are hard, just add cushions or pillows.) But, for a full day of learning, it is best to use comfortable and supportive office chairs. We just assembled two new office chairs for the boys (after they tested chairs at Office Depot and Staples. These are the two chairs we bought them for this year of virtual learning: ( Dexley Mesh Task Chair and Brenton Radley Mesh Task Chair )

I completely understand if purchasing new chairs is out of your budget. If so, you can try scouring Craig’s List or Facebook Marketplace for a sturdy used chair. Don’t let the condition deter you, because you can always recover it following this tutorial :

For kids that have a hard time sitting still, you may want to let them try either a wobble stool or an exercise ball (with weighted bottom) .

Decorating the School Work Space

Working in a space that has some decorations or art makes a space more appealing. Decorate the homework station with art, flowers, or anything that makes the space feel beautiful and relaxing.

While decorating the room, I added a wood block calendar and a quote from Mark Twain. Have you heard this quote before?

Eat your frog first thing in the morning Mark twain quote

The gist of the message is to stop procrastinating. Do your least favorite task first thing in the morning and put the worst behind you. This leaves the rest of your day with tasks you don’t mind as much or with the tasks you actually enjoy doing. So, go ahead and eat your frog every morning.

Eat your frog first thing in the morning Mark twain quote

This space has been perfect for my sons to use for focused homework time. I don’t know why I didn’t change the dining room (which rarely gets used) into a more usable space sooner. But, now that we have signed them both up for the online virtual academy, I’ll be creating a second space for my other son. Having a high schooler and a middle schooler means they each need to be able to focus on their work.

dining room reused as homework station also good for home schooling

I’ll be sharing an update on how we are turning the guest room into another school/study zone.

Now, speaking of my sons, here comes my oldest now.

He loves having a spot to spread out and get his homework done. He has asked me to cut a piece of plexiglass or masonite to top this rustic farmhouse table , because it’s a little too rustic to be a smooth writing surface.

What about dinner guests, you ask? If at some point we have family or close friends over, I can move the supplies onto the hutch and set the table for dinner. Or we could serve Chinese and let our guests use pencils instead of chopsticks. LOL.

Do you have a homework/school work space set up in your home? Where is it? Did I forget to include anything in this functional space?

Looks perfect. I love your table also. Very pretty light fixture. I converted a long hallway to the garage that was never used into an office. Used Chalk Paint on the doors and pained over all the dark paneling. Changed the floors and added Ikea storage. Maybe I will send in a picture, but it gives the boys a place to go and be out of the kitchen and TV.

April 10, 2018 By Jackie

We use our formal dining room at most twice a year. It was the most unused room in our entire home. Then my kids started using the big table for craft projects and homework and I got an idea.

I always say it’s important to make your home work for you. It’s okay to disregard what the room is supposed to be or how the home builder expected you to use the space. So, I turned our rarely used dining room into a space we use at least five days a week. Now, it’s one of the hardest working rooms in our home.

We turned our dining room into a homework room.

How we turned our formal dining room into a homework room where the kids can study

With two elementary school boys, we needed a dedicated space for them to study and do projects. My oldest son was in need of a quiet, distraction-free study space. The kitchen table was too distracting with his little brother playing in the living room and the pantry only steps away. He was sneaking 2-3 snacks per homework session…anything to get out of starting his math homework. A quiet study space was an unmet need in our home.

Creating a Distraction-Free Study Space

Before I make big changes in my home, I always observe how we’re using the space. I look for what’s working in the space as it is and what’s not working that needs to be changed.

One thing I loved about our dining room is that the boys used it as an art space. They knew it was the one surface in the house where they could leave in progress projects. When I reclaimed my laundry room from the kids’ craft supplies a few years ago, I moved them to the armoire in the dining room. They now have easy access to their supplies where they prefer to work.

One thing that wasn’t working in the room, though, was the six bulky upholstered dining chairs. They crowded the table and weren’t actually all that comfortable for young boys that like to move around a lot. I couldn’t part with the head chairs that I slipcovered in a special tablecloth , but I had no problem getting rid of the four side chairs . Apparently, getting rid of furniture is my favorite thing lately.

dining room turned homework room - she took away most of the dining chairs to make the table more accessible

As soon as the chairs were gone, the room felt so much bigger and more usable. I brought up two small metal side chairs from our basement to add extra seating without overpowering the room. Now, we can sit and help each boy with their homework at opposite ends of the table.

How to set up a dining room as a homework room or study space

Once we started using the room every night for homework time, I started to notice a few other decorative things that weren’t working. For one, to keep the space distraction-free, I decided to remove a lot of the decor, especially small things leaning on the ledges around the room. Also, the crystal chandelier seemed a little too formal for the room. So I removed all the crystals and put on the little white shades that originally came with the light. The little tweaks really helped streamline the room and transform it into a full-time homework space.

The best part is we can turn it back to a dining room anytime we want. In fact, right after I made all of these changes, I found out my family was coming over here for Thanksgiving dinner. So, I borrowed the chairs from the kitchen and embraced the mismatched chair look for the occasion.

Fun! Mismatched chairs in a formal dining room

Adding a Mini Mudroom

One other big change we made in this room was adding what I’m calling a “mini mudroom.” It’s my favorite thing ever and has totally eliminated about 90% of the morning stress trying to get the boys out the door to catch the bus.

doing homework at the kitchen table

Before I added the mini mudroom, I was trying to wrangle the kids to the mudroom by the garage to put on their coats and grab their backpacks. Then, I was shooing them all the way past the kitchen, living room, dining room, and office to go out the front door. I felt like we were going in ten different directions at once every morning. I hated that we started every day in stress mode.

Then, after school, the boys were coming through the front door and hopefully dragging all their stuff with them to the other end of the house to hang it up in the mudroom. When it was time to do homework, they were heading to the mudroom to grab the books they needed and bringing them all back to the dining room.

Obviously, the mudroom is a logical place to hang coats and backpacks, but ours wasn’t working for us unless we were going out the garage door. It just wasn’t the right place for our kids’ school gear.

So, I added a second mudroom inside our dining room. I know it sounds weird, but stay with me. First, our dining room is an odd shape with one wall much longer than the other. There was prime real estate on the long wall not being used. Second, this wall is just around the corner from the front door and hidden from view when you enter the house. Third, we already started using the dining room as a homework room and it just made sense to start storing the boys’ backpacks in the same place.

Easy backpack storage

One thing I didn’t want was anything bulky. I wanted to keep this mini mudroom simple and functional. All it took was one bench ( this bench that I hand-wrapped with fabric ) and two sturdy hooks. Instant mudroom. It’s out of view from the front door but you can see this area from our living room, so I still wanted it to look cute.

A few feet of wall space, a bench, and a few wall hooks is all you need for a mudroom

My favorite things are these iron wall hooks . I love the shape of them and they’re perfect for holding heavy backpacks. The kids just hang their coats overtop their backpacks. I added hand-lettered labels with each boys name.

Add wall hooks to create an instant mudroom

Now, the boys come in the front door after school and immediately hang up their backpacks and coats in the dining room. When it’s homework time, they just grab their books and sit at the table to study.

Create an instant mudroom with wall hooks and a bench

Besides giving our dining room a purpose, creating a dedicated homework space brought peace to our home. It makes getting ready for school in the mornings less stressful. It makes the transition to homework time after school more natural (and tantrum-free).

Do you have an unused space in your home? What about unmet needs? Brainstorm the things you wish you had more space for in your home and marry those unmet needs up with unused spaces in your home. It doesn’t even have to be an entire room, sometimes an unused corner or nook is all you need to make your home more functional. I’ve just moved, and my old home is already on the market. But my new home is still half in boxes. I’d love to hear your tips about this time period. Last move that I made, I took my time with my kitchen and really planned, organized, and decluttered while I unpacked — with a resulting wonderful kitchen. This move I am just throwing things out onto shelves because I am pressed for time, and promising myself that I’ll get back to it. Same with all of the rooms, none of them are getting any loving attention right now :-(

Hi Jackie. Brilliant as always! We have an office space by our front door that needs a redo so this has my gears turning. Did you worry about installing those hooks before selling your house? We have installation phobia here, even though we are not selling in the foreseeable future. Sigh…Thanks!!!

I wasn’t too worried about the hooks. I feel like they make sense in the board and batten vs. right into the wall. And it’s be easy to remove and repair the holes. Notice I didn’t install five or six hooks though. I kept it to the bare minimum.

I did have a home staging consult a few weeks ago and she never even mentioned the hooks or bench, so I knew they were fine to stay. She was more focused on wanting me to add more chairs to the dining table…which I didn’t do. I wasn’t about to buy more furniture after all of our purging. I simply put the two metal chairs together on one side of the table and put our lob entry bench (that matches the head chairs) on the other side of the table.

Genius solution! I love thinking about function when decorating a space. I’ve moved the furniture in my living room around a few times so it doesn’t get in the way of heavily traveled paths.

The Top 3 Best Places To Do Homework (And Where To Avoid)

In this post, we, together with an expert paper writer from a top  write my college paper  writing service for students, will outline  our top 3 choices for best places to do homework , along with some areas we recommend you avoid.

Are there actually best places to do homework? It depends…

Now let’s start off by saying, even though we’ll outline some good choices for homework spots, each child has their own particular learning preferences.

This means that although the kitchen table might bit a great choice for one kid, it might be loud, distracting, and not conducive to focused work for another.

So first things first, recognize that your child may already have their favorite places to do homework in mind, and involve them in the process of making it a regular habit to work in the most productive spots. And the research actually supports this idea.

Metacognition: Self-aware students do better

Metacognition is defined as, “awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes.” This term’s origins are in the field of psychology, but a study out of Vanderbilt University  actually ties metacognition or self-awareness to college success.

The study looked at college freshman and found  that those who were more effective in choosing their study habits (and locations) were much more successful in the classroom.

In other words, the students who knew themselves and the way they learn best performed better and got better grades. It’s important to note that these successful students didn’t all use the same study habits; but rather, they were able to identify what worked best for them and stick to those strategies . This is because every person takes in, processes, and learns information a little differently.

Keep this in mind when choosing the ideal homework location.

Best Homework Spot #1: The Kitchen Table

If you’re like me, when you grew up your parents expected all homework to be completed at the kitchen table. For some kids, this is a great option. It allows them to spread out all their books in the hum of a busy area, which for some kids who hate the quiet, is absolutely perfect!

But for others, like me, this isn’t a great spot because it’s in the center of the house and there are so many distractions. Every time someone walks by to the fridge, sink, or garage is yet another opportunity to lose focus.

Best Homework Spot #2: The Couch Lap Desk

While this won’t work for some due to the temptation of the TV (or the ability to slowly sink into napping mode) we’ve found that some students are really successful on the couch with a lap desk.

Comfortable, quiet, and free from distractions, this is usually a good spot if your child likes the ability to “sink in” and focus from the lounging position.

Best Homework Spot #3: The Outside Deck Dweller

A lot of students prefer the nice, cool, air conditioned indoors over going outside for homework time, because there’s less of a chance of discomfort (or your papers being blown away!).

But we do come across those few students who just absolutely love being outside. For these kids, you can blend the best of both worlds, and have them do their homework outside on the deck.

Hey, maybe they’ll even get some much needed Vitamin D in the process!

The ONE homework location to avoid…

As we said before, much of your child’s choice of homework location depends on their personal preferences. But there is one place that’s generally regarded as a “no-no.” And thats… the bedroom.

Because this is the one place in the house your son or daughter are most likely to be distracted by toys, phones, computers, and all other forms of impulse to NOT study or do homework. So you should probably keep that one off the list.

How to help your child figure out what their ideal learning environment is

First of all, you want to give your child the flexibility to try a few different places.

If you find that your child is having a hard time focusing in a designated homework area, encourage him to try a different location and then ask leading questions such as:

“How focused did you feel in the ____?”

Or  “did you feel like you got a lot done when you were studying in the ___?”

You want to avoid asking the question “which did you prefer?” because many times students will choose the convenient location over the one that leads to productivity.

If there’s a lot going on and you still find that your student is having a hard time focusing, encourage her to find outside locations. This could be a public library, or staying after school for a homework club or a teacher’s office hours. Sometimes there’s just too many distractions in the home for a student to get a lot done.

Finally, if you find yourself caught up in arguments with your child over where she is doing her homework (e.g. she insists on doing her homework in her bedroom though she’s not getting a lot done), try bringing in a neutral third party  such as a tutor . Many times, this third party will eliminate the stress between the parent and the student while working with the student to figure out what learning environment they perform best in.

What study locations have your kids found to be most productive?

How to Create an Organized Homework Space {with free printable after school checklist}

by Sharon Rowley Leave a Comment

When the kids come home from school with their backpacks overflowing with paperwork- it's great if there is an organized homework space for them to unload it all, and a way to keep all of their supplies organized. In my quest to get organized – here's how I created an organized homework space in my kitchen!

When the kids come home from school with their backpacks overflowing with paperwork- it's great if there is a "landing pad" for them to unload it all, and a way to keep all of their supplies organized. Here's how I created an organized homework space in the kitchen for my large family!

I spent a few hours recently re-working our kitchen desk area to make sure that we had a place for everything and a system to keep it all organized. Here's how I did it:

I re-worked our kitchen to make sure that we had a place for everything and a system to keep it organized. Here's how I created an organized homework space:

How to Create an Organized Homework Space:

1. dedicate some counter space for unloading and staging.

There needs to be room for the kids to unload all of their folders and binders and be able to access them during the afternoon and evening while they are tackling homework. Last week I spent some time examining what we were storing on our kitchen counters and created “homes” for items in cabinets and drawers in order to free up some counter space.

Part of that counter space is now dedicated to being a “landing pad” for school work.

Along with this landing pad space- you also need a system so the kids know how you expect them to use it- starting with an inbox where the kids can put all of their completed school work, school notices and permission slips. This gives you one place to check to go through all of that paperwork in the evening.

2. Make the Homework Space Part of Your Routine

Get your kids into a routine of unpacking their backpacks, getting a snack and then settling down to homework.

3. Keep Homework Supplies Right Where They'll Use Them!

My kids might do their homework at the kitchen table, or they might do it at their desks in their rooms. So we use a homework caddy  that is filled with everything a student needs to do homework- pencils, pens, erasers, glue sticks, colored pencils, markers, rulers, index cards, highlighters, etc.

The fact that all of the supplies are in a caddy with a handle makes it easy for them to take the caddy to where they are working.

You know those papers that come home from school with the kids' login information for various educational websites, or paperwork that pertains to the school instrument rental that you want to keep around? That's the kind of stuff that I like to keep on file right in the kitchen.

I use our family command center to keep papers related to upcoming events, sports schedules, etc.

5. Have a Place for Those Library Books!

My elementary-school-aged kids bring home a stack of library books each week from school- so having a designated place to keep them where we can see them and remember to read them as well as make sure we know where to find them on “library day” is important. We use a small section of countertop space dedicated just for that purpose.

Homework Station Ideas

Check out these fun and creative ideas for creating a homework station in your home.  No matter your size or budget, there’s something for everyone!

Collection of homework station ideas for any space or budget.

Setting up a homework station.

For this month’s Household Organization Diet , I’ve been working on the kids’ rooms .  I don’t really have any big projects planned – just lots of purging and re-organizing!  This weekend I’ll be going through their closets and tidying things up in their homework station .  For those of you that are following along with me {or just need some ideas for their own space!}, I’ve put together some kids’ desk ideas for you.  It doesn’t have to be fancy – there is something for every sized budget and space!

The end of summer is near and it’s {unfortunately!} time to start thinking about back to school.  For most kids, homework is one of those necessary evils and creating a dedicated spot in your home for them to complete their work can help them to improve their focus and develop proper study habits. Check out some of these great ideas to get you started…

What is a homework station?

A homework station is basically just a dedicated spot in your home that your child is expected to do their homework.  It can be set up to your kids’ particular learning style and help them stay more productive and focused while doing their homework.  A homework area also provides one main location in your home to store and organize all of the school supplies and art supplies that your child needs.  This makes it easy for them to find what they need and gives them one less excuse for getting their work started!

Where to set up a homework station.

You can really set up a homework station anywhere!  Some kids have one in their room, others may share a space in the family office area, and others might end up doing at the kitchen table.  The important thing is finding out what works best for your child and your home space.

Independent learners and older children might prefer having their own space where they can be alone and focus.  If your child needs more assistance from you, having a space near where you work might be a better option.  As your kids gets older, the environment that they work best in might change, so stay open to new ideas.

What to put at a homework station.

You don’t really need a lot of supplies to set up your kids desk.  Basic school supplies such as pens, pencils, erasers, scissors, paper, etc. are kind of a given at any age.  Take an inventory of what you already have {re-using old school supplies from the previous year} and stock up on any needed items at the back to school sales. Use a caddy or pencil box to keep smaller items contained and organized. Stacking drawers also work well for providing extra storage in a smaller space.

Elementary school children will also likely need some colored pens and pencils and often enjoy a small area to display some of their favorite creations.  You can always add a few decorative touches to make the space more cozy and comfortable, but you don’t want it too cluttered or distracting.  Find more ideas on what to put in a homework station HERE .

12 Tips For Creating The Ultimate Homework Station

this image is not available

1. Create some easy cord control.

this image is not available

2. Keep all supplies close by.

Barbara Reich, a professional organizer and author of Secrets of an Organized Mom insists that “kids should have everything they need to work without having to get up or move to get it: pencils, erasers, sharpeners, highlighters, lined paper, or graph paper. It’s much less distracting.”

3. Choose the right-size work surface.

“The desks I make for kids are 28-inches high, almost adult height but not quite,” explains Gil. “That height ensures your child won’t outgrow it, they could use it until they head off to college! If it’s a little too tall initially, use an adjustable chair.”

4. Make it easy to go mobile when needed.

“Sometimes kids want to do homework at the kitchen or dining room table. For easy clean up, stash pens, pencils, crayons or whatever they need in a supply caddy. I really love the I Could’ve Bin a Art Caddy ($22; Land of Nod ),” says Reich. “It’s easy to put everything away and stick it in a cabinet.”

5. Don’t be afraid to fit a desk wherever you can.

6. get papers organized (and out of their backpacks)., 7. it’s all about location., 8. clear clutter daily..

“Having a trash can next to the desk makes it easy to throw away garbage and odds and ends. If kids have to get up to get rid of their trash, it ends up accumulating on the desktop,” says Reich.

9. Make sure there is enough room to spread out.

10. keep the desk looking like new., 11. get into a routine..

“Make every morning easier with repetition,” says Reich. “Every night homework and papers should go right from the backpack to the table, from the table back into a folder, then back into the backpack. No more frantic searches for papers and it develops great habits that will last into adulthood.”

12. Protect the desk while kids personalize it.
