FTAdviser Top 100 Financial Advisers 2022

Our rundown of the top UK financial advice firms

financial planning firms uk

Welcome to the FTAdviser Top 100 2022

The latest FTAdviser Top 100 Financial Advisers lists are out for 2022, showcasing some of the best advice firms in the country.

Over the past year, the financial services sector has been rocked by significant events.

These include Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the rising cost of living, an energy crisis and a swath of tax changes unveiled as part of the new prime minister’s Trussonomics plan for growth, which helped the pound tumble to record lows.

Yet despite this, the list of businesses in the FTAdviser Top 100 2022 presents a snapshot of the remarkable resilience shown by the entire advice sector.

These standards are a decent indication of a firm trying to do the right thing by its customers

2022 marks 10 years since the introduction of the Retail Distribution Review; seven years since pension freedoms came into force and six years since the Financial Advice Market Review highlighted serious issues that needed to be addressed.

And over that time, businesses have adapted to change, whether this be tax policy turning on a pin, dealing with the after-effects of the pandemic or embracing the digital transformation.

Most firms are still feeling their way into what Liz Truss has been calling a ‘new era’. But finding the right balance between face-to-face advice and online services – as well as developing robust succession plans to future-proof the advice industry – could yet result in some significant changes to business models.

We will be keeping a close eye on that, as well as the more familiar challenges facing advisers and their firms, in the months and years ahead.

FTAdviser’s Top 100 Financial Advisers is based on Financial Clarity data, from ISS Market Intelligence.

In keeping with our policy of revising the methodology to avoid a skew to the largest firms, we also reward businesses that are either chartered by the Chartered Insurance Institute or accredited by the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.

Of course, these standards are not a guarantee of good behaviour or good practices, but they remain a decent indication of a firm trying to do the right thing by its customers, and help to ensure our list is not compiled using financial metrics alone.

As a result, seven of our top 10 companies have either chartered or accredited status, as do 17 of the top 20.

The top 20 is where the rankings end this year. As per last year, businesses outside this group are now listed in alphabetical order, rather than based on the data.

We’ve done this so the list emphasises the companies themselves, rather than giving undue focus to a precise position in the rankings or how that position might have shifted year-on-year. Indeed, sometimes firms' positions might change significantly over the year.

Equally, we consider it important to retain a small group of firms that our metrics rank as the best of the best at the top of the list.

In 2022 we are continuing with the editor’s choice selection, which was introduced in 2021. This is designed to recognise a company whose qualities might otherwise not be captured by our metrics.

This year, that choice is Clairville York, which only just missed out on entering the Top 100 this year and is a new entrant into the 150 or so firms that make up the long list.

The methodology

The list is produced using Financial Clarity data from ISS Market Intelligence and looks at a variety of factors, including gross inflows through the year, client retention, the number of chartered or certified financial planners and length of service.

Financial Clarity receives data directly from fund managers and investment platforms. Their AUM coverage exceeds the Investment Association’s total retail assets under management.

The top 25 fund managers in the IA account for 83 per cent per cent of retail assets under management and Financial Clarity receives sales and AUM data from 19 of these investment houses, including 17 of the top 20.

Submissions from these fund managers are supplemented by fund managers outside of the IA. Fourteen platforms submit data to Financial Clarity, 13 of which at intermediary and product level.

The displayed figures have been rounded to two significant figures and include assets invested in retail advisory investments and pensions

The list is created by first selecting the 150 largest firms by gross sales in the previous 12 months, July 2021–June 2022 for the 2022 list. Individual firms affiliated with a wider group are included within the figures for the group, and appointed representatives are included within the figures for their principal, regardless of whether they could appear individually.

This year, firms with gross sales of more than £175mn were eligible for inclusion compared with £150mn in 2021, £115mn in 2020 and £125mn in 2019.

Each firm is then scored on six different factors, the sum of which produce the ranking:

1. AUM Score – 110 per cent of the natural logarithm of June 2022 AUM. 2. Net % Score – Last 12 months (July 2021 to June 2022) Net-Sales percentage of June 2021 AUM, broken down into quintiles awarding points as follows: 1, 5, 9, 12 & 14 points for each quintile, respectively. 3. Years Score – 1/8 point for each year in service up to a maximum of 10 points. This year, the average years in service for the Top-100 firms is 37 years.  4. Retention Score – Pence outflows per each £1 inflows – the lower the better. Broken down to quintiles awarding points as follows: 4, 3, 2, 1 & 0 points for each quintile, respectively. 5 . Estimated Performance Score – Based on AUM growth over the period once net-sales are taken away. Broken down to quintiles awarding points as follows: 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 & 2 for each quintile, respectively. 6. CII or CISI Chartered/Accredited – Firms that are chartered or accredited by CISI or CII received points based on the percentage of the AUM held by chartered or accredited firms. This factor awards a maximum of 10 points.

The average weight for each of the above factors in this year’s Top-100 firms:

Assets held accounted for an average of 50.7 per cent of each adviser’s score (49 per cent last year).

Net-flow accounted for an average of 23.5 per cent of each adviser’s score (26 per cent last year).

Years of service accounted for an average of 8.2 per cent of each adviser’s score (9 per cent last year).

Retention accounted for an average of 5.9 per cent of each adviser’s score (5 per cent last year).

Estimated performance accounted for an average of 2.6 per cent of each adviser’s score (2 per cent last year).

CISI or CII Chartered/Accredited accounted for an average of 9.1 per cent of each adviser’s score (9 per cent last year).

The displayed figures have been rounded to two significant figures and include assets invested in retail advisory investments and pensions, reported to Financial Clarity by its partners. Other assets, such as those invested in discretionary funds or model portfolios, were included when submitted.

The analysis looked at firms that were chartered or accredited financial planners as a mark of their professionalism and commitment to their clients. In the case of groups where some members were chartered or accredited and others were not, points were awarded based on the percentage of the AUM held by chartered or accredited firms.

Feedback from our clients

Although I have a financial background I felt that the range of considerations in personal financial planning meant that the expertise, know how and up to date knowledge that an adviser could bring would greatly improve the outcome. Laura looked carefully at our specific situation and long term goals and matched our investment strategy closely with these. Crucially the advice is dynamic and regular so changes in requirements or market conditions are quickly addressed. It is not a 'tick box' service, we consider and agree the plan together based on up to date advice and market knowledge. VouchedFor review

These are the UK's 10 financial advisers to watch in 2020

  • The coronavirus pandemic has spooked investors.
  • A financial adviser can help in decision-making and sticking to a financial plan.
  • Business Insider has highlighted the UK's top financial advisers to watch in 2020.

The coronavirus pandemic has interrupted stock markets and made many investors wary about the best way to manage their money during these tough times.

A financial adviser can help define a strategy and ensure you keep to it, but it can be hard to choose one.

The latest data from the Financial Conduct Authority, the UK regulator for financial services, indicates only one in 10 adults seek financial advice when making investment decisions.

The recent market volatility may push more toward professional advice, leaving many to question how to choose the right person.

Business Insider has sifted through financial-adviser trade awards and review websites to highlight the most praised and promising people and brands to manage your money — and they are all open for business despite the coronavirus lockdown.

Gemma Siddle, Eldon Financial Planning

financial planning firms uk

Siddle had planned to become a lawyer but joined Eldon more than a decade ago instead.

She has built a bustling award cabinet since, with trophies from the Personal Finance Society for paraplanner of the year in 2012 and chartered financial planner of the year for 2019. She was also included in New Model Adviser's top 35 next-generation advisers each year from 2016 to 2019.

"We have provided a remote service for several years and were able to adapt to remote working without any interruption to our service," Siddle said.

Angela Marson, Fairstone

financial planning firms uk

Fairstone is one of the highest-rated UK financial advisers on the reviews website Trustpilot, with a score of 4.9 out of 5 from more than 3,000 reviews that praised its service and knowledge.

It is one of the UK's largest chartered-financial-planning firms, with 600 advisers and staff members spread across 48 UK locations.

"Clients have been happy to embrace the new approach to virtual meetings," Marson, a chartered financial planner at Fairstone, said.

"My time is actually spent more effectively with clients, removing the time taken to travel to meetings, which has helped me as an adviser, to assist more clients."

Kyle Nethercott, Hazlewoods

financial planning firms uk

You don't need to be a big brand to make a big impression. The Gloucester-based adviser Hazlewoods Financial Planning came 13th in the trade title FTAdviser's top 100 financial advisers for 2019 — a list dominated by large firms.

The awards assess how qualified staff members are, their experience in different economic environments, as well as the value of investments that came in and out of the business over the year.

It may have a small team of four advisers, but Hazlewoods still advises clients across the UK, and its management, including the financial-planning partner Nethercott, has decades of experience.

"Our clients know they can contact us if needed, and we are conducting many meetings via telephone instead of the usual face-to-face," Nethercott said.

Pete Matthew, Jacksons Wealth Management

financial planning firms uk

Matthew is the managing director of Jacksons Wealth Management. He launched one of the first personal-finance-focused podcasts in the UK and has a strong social media and web presence with his Meaningful Money financial-education brand.

"I've been using Zoom video to talk to clients around the country for years now," Matthew said.

"I've never met most of my clients in person, so that hasn't been an adjustment."

Andy Hart, Maven Adviser

financial planning firms uk

Hart is the founder of Maven Adviser and is a respected financial-planning podcaster. He has also launched Humans Under Management, a series of events focusing on the behavioral-finance aspects of investing rather than just products and performance.

"I've been remote-ready for close to a decade," he said.

"Lockdown has caused a lot of disruption with the companies I use, but we're still taking on clients and servicing our existing clients."

Barry Horner, Paradigm Norton

financial planning firms uk

Paradigm Norton, with offices in London, Torquay, and Bristol, is a serial industry-award winner, picking up regular accolades from trade titles such as Money Marketing and New Model Adviser that praise the way it works with clients.

It is a Certified B Corporation, which means it must maintain certain social and environmental performance targets and balance profit and purpose. It also has its own impact-investing arm.

"The week before lockdown the entire team of some 70 professionals were all successfully home working, and, other than the ability to schedule 'face to face' meetings, we were fully operational," Horner, its chief executive, said.

"We have emailed our clients with regular and helpful updates, which has been hugely appreciated."

Darren Sharkey, Quilter Financial Planning

financial planning firms uk

The nationally focused adviser Quilter Financial Planning came on top of FTAdviser's top 100 financial advisers for 2019.

Its ranking suggests you get access to well-qualified, experienced support among its thousands of advisers.

The team is led by Sharkey, who has worked within Quilter for more than 20 years.

"Now more than ever, clients need to be able to contact their adviser and be reassured that their finances are in safe hands," Sharkey said.

"Our advisers have tools and resources to offer advice remotely."

Darren Cooke, Red Circle Financial Planning

financial planning firms uk

Cooke was one of the first to call for a ban on pensions cold calling to stop people from getting scammed.

He started his own campaign in 2016, and the government went on to introduce a ban in January 2019. This indicates he is someone who cares for his client's well-being.

"Clients are still receiving the same high-level service they did before," Cooke said.

"The main part that has really changed has been replacing meetings with video calls, but so far that has worked really well."

Tim Sargisson, Sandringham Financial Partners

financial planning firms uk

Sandringham Financial Partners was the top-rated firm on the adviser search engine VouchedFor in 2019 based on the number and level of reviews it received. Out of 1,974 clients, the national advice firm received 1,828 five-star ratings, 136 four-stars, and 10 three-star reviews.

"Clients value you for your ability to provide reassurance and help deliver their goals," its CEO, Tim Sargisson, said.

"The other critical part is how you deliver your service and our tools help advisers deal with clients remotely."

Lisa Johnstone, VWM Wealth

financial planning firms uk

Johnstone's team picked up the trophy for chartered firm of the year at the Personal Finance Society's 2019 awards, which cited the way it engaged with charities, sought feedback from clients, and developed new financial advisers. It also offers its own range of ethical portfolios.

Our top 5 financial planning firms

Financial Planning, Financial Planning Firms

Although not all the institutions on the findaWEALTHMANAGER.com panel offer financial planning (around 40% prefer to focus purely on investment management) these services are vitally important to many clients. Indeed, many of our users mention wanting a “one-stop-shop” for all their financial affairs.

Here, we offer key information and client insights on a selection of some of the top financial planning firms in the UK today.

1. Smith & Williamson

Smith & Williamson is an independently-owned financial services group providing the full spectrum of investment management, accountancy, tax, corporate and financial advisory services to private clients, corporates and charities. The firm has 13 offices across the UK and is known for its expertise in serving client groups with distinct needs and perhaps financial planning complexities, such as entrepreneurs and professional footballers.

Smith & Williamson’s offering for private clients covers all areas of personal financial planning, and the firm has particular expertise in pre- and post-retirement issues, such as SIPP management, investment structuring, tax-efficient investing, IHT mitigation and overseas pensions.

Article:  Meeting The Wealth Management Needs Of Entrepreneurs

Financial Planning, Financial Planning Firms

What users of findaWEALTHMANAGER.com say about Smith & Williamson:

Users of findaWEALTHMANAGER.com tell us they particularly like the “one-stop-shop” element of Smith & Williamson’s offering – particularly entrepreneurs who may be approaching a significant liquidity event and so need advice across their entire financial affairs, both personal and corporate (the firm is also deeply involved in the entrepreneurial community in the UK and participates regular in thought leadership events for business-owners).

Clients also praise Smith & Williamson for the depth of its financial planning offering, which includes a specific service set up to help divorcing couples navigate the complexities around splitting pensions .

2. Charles Stanley

Charles Stanley is one of the oldest firms on the London Stock Exchange, having first appeared as an independent member in 1852. Its traditional heritage notwithstanding, the firm is known today for having made some very forward-thinking technology investments, including iPhone and Apple Watch apps enabling clients to monitor their investments on the move.

Following a recent restructure, Charles Stanley will operate under four distinct operating units: investment management, asset management, Charles Stanley Direct (its offering for self-directed investors) and financial planning. The firm has designed its financial planning service specifically for clients who, although they may not want ongoing wealth management services, still wish to have their financial affairs examined periodically in a holistic way – so that they can maximise opportunities to grow their wealth and invest in a tax-efficient manner.

What users of findaWEALTHMANAGER.com say about Charles Stanley:

In general, regional coverage is a real strength of Charles Stanley’s, since the firm boasts 24 offices across the UK. It is also praised for its technological capabilities, both for self-directed investors and private clients.

Charles Stanley is known for its decentralised investment approach, meaning that portfolio managers have greater freedom to personalise portfolios and this bespoke feel is also said to apply to the financial planning arm.

3. Cazenove Capital Management

Cazenove Capital Management is the wealth management business of Schroders in the UK, Channel Islands and Asia. The firm is the result of a 2013 merger between Schroders and Cazenove Capital, both of which have venerable histories: Schroders was founded in 1804 as a merchant bank and Cazenove in 1823 as a stockbroker.

Cazenove Capital Management has offices in London, Chester, Edinburgh, Oxford, Jersey and Guernsey. With a stated aim to provide a comprehensive wealth management offering, the firm offers personalised discretionary and advisory investment services to both onshore and offshore clients, as well as wider wealth management services such as wealth planning, cash administration, deposit-taking and lending.

Article: Combining The Strengths Of Two Venerable Institutions

What users of findaWEALTHMANAGER.com say about Cazenove Capital Management:

At Cazenove Capital Management in-house wealth planners are able to work closely with clients and portfolio managers to whatever degree is necessary.

Our users have praised the fact that wealth planners are involved right from the start of relationships and the emphasis placed on making sure that wealth is held in the optimum structure for the client’s profile and needs. Great attention is paid to the capital growth and income required by clients, their time horizon, tax circumstances and the location of their assets, as well as their wider financial affairs.

Seen as a highly-professional organisation, clients also praise the clarity of literature provided by Cazenove Capital Management, particularly that concerning tax-efficient structures.

4. Psigma Investment Management

Founded in 2002, Psigma Investment Management is London-based and has a core investment offering comprising fully bespoke portfolio management and Managed Portfolio Service (dependent on level of investment).

While not strictly a financial planning firm, Psigma still warrants its place on our list as its structure means that it is able to offer a far broader offering than investment management alone. Psigma is part of the Punter Southall Group, a diversified financial services company offering actuarial, pensions consultancy, administration and investment services for pension scheme trustees, employers, private clients and institutions. This means that financial planning matters such as trusts, IHT mitigation or pensions can be efficiently addressed by calling on in-house expertise.

Article:  Growing Fast With A Focus On Absolute Returns

What users of findaWEALTHMANAGER.com say about Psigma Investment Management:

Psigma has a distinct investment ethos which places great emphasis on targeted returns and delivering a certain level of gains above inflation. This is intended to suit those nearing, or at the end of their working lives, who are looking for their pension assets to grow ahead of inflation; this approach is also proving popular with young professionals with families, whose issue is keeping up with rising school fees.

Clients of Psigma tell us that they really appreciate the fact that ad hoc financial planning questions can be tackled – as senior executives have put it to us – “by literally by going across the floor”.

5. Quilter Cheviot

Quilter Cheviot Investment Management (which has roots going back to 1771) is also predominantly an investment house, but one which has good capabilities in financial planning due to its specialism in managing investments for a wide range of pension schemes. These include Self-invested personal pensions (SIPPs); Defined Benefit/Defined Contribution schemes; Small self-administered schemes (SSASs) and overseas pensions.

Also like Psigma Investment Management, Quilter Cheviot is part of a wider group – here Old Mutual Wealth, which is a FTSE 100 company. Quilter Cheviot has 14 offices across the UK, along with one in Dubai.

Article:  Money Lessons Learned By A Wealth Management CEO: David Loudon, Quilter Cheviot Investment Management

What users of findaWEALTHMANAGER.com say about Quilter Cheviot:

Our users praise Quilter Cheviot for its combination of personalised service and a boutique feel along with a broad platform – which has been further enhanced by it coming under the auspices of Old Mutual.

Also praised for its broad offering yet boutique feel, Quilter Cheviot has been lauded by our users as “having wealth management in its DNA”.

Total Current Assets / Total Current Liabilities

This ratio is a rough indication of a firm’s ability to service its current obligations. Generally, the higher the current ratio, the greater the "cushion" between current obligations and a firm’s ability to pay them. While a stronger ratio shows that the numbers for current assets exceed those for current liabilities, the composition and quality of current assets are critical factors in the analysis of an individual firm’s liquidity.

Total Revenue / Accounts Receivable

365 / Receivables Turnover Ratio

This figure expresses the average number of days that receivables are outstanding. Generally, the greater the number of days outstanding, the greater the probability of delinquencies in accounts receivable. A comparison of this ratio may indicate the extent of a company’s control over credit and collections. However, companies within the same industry may have different terms offered to customers, which must be considered.

Total Revenue / Closing Inventory

This is an efficiency ratio, which indicates the average liquidity of the inventory or whether a business has over or under stocked inventory. This ratio is also known as "inventory turnover" and is often calculated using "cost of sales" rather than "total revenue." This ratio is not very relevant for financial, construction and real estate industries.

365 / Inventory Turnover Ratio

Dividing the inventory turnover ratio into 365 days yields the average length of time units are in inventory.

Total Revenue / Net Working Capital

Because it reflects the ability to finance current operations, working capital is a measure of the margin of protection for current creditors. When you relate the level of sales resulting from operations to the underlying working capital, you can measure how efficiently working capital is being used. *Net Working Capital = Current Assets - Current Liabilities

(Net Profit + Interest & Bank Charges) / Interest & Bank Charges)

This ratio calculates the average number of times that interest owing is earned and, therefore, indicates the debt risk of a business. The larger the ratio, the more able a firm is to cover its interest obligations on debt. This ratio is not very relevant for financial industries. This ratio is also known as "times interest earned."

Total Liabilities / Total Equity

This is a solvency ratio, which indicates a firm's ability to pay its long-term debts. The lower the positive ratio is, the more solvent the business. The debt to equity ratio also provides information on the capital structure of a business, the extent to which a firm's capital is financed through debt. This ratio is relevant for all industries.

Total Liabilities / Total Assets

This is a solvency ratio indicating a firm's ability to pay its long-term debts, the amount of debt outstanding in relation to the amount of capital. The lower the ratio, the more solvent the business is.

(Net Fixed Assets * 100) / Equity

Net fixed assets represent long-term investment, so this percentage indicates relative capital investment structure.

Total Revenue / Equity

It indicates the profitability of a business, relating the total business revenue to the amount of investment committed to earning that income. This ratio provides an indication of the economic productivity of capital.

(Net Profit * 100) / Equity

This percentage indicates the profitability of a business, relating the business income to the amount of investment committed to earning that income. This percentage is also known as "return on investment" or "return on equity." The higher the percentage, the relatively better profitability is.

(Net Profit + Interest and Bank Charges) * 100 / Total Assets

This percentage, also known as "return on total investment," is a relative measure of profitability and represents the rate of return earned on the investment of total assets by a business. It reflects the combined effect of both the operating and the financing/investing activities of a business. The higher the percentage, the better profitability is.

(Total Current Assets * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents the total of cash and other resources that are expected to be realized in cash, or sold or consumed within one year or the normal operating cycle of the business, whichever is longer.

(Accounts Receivable * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents all claims against debtors arising from the sale of goods and services and any other miscellaneous claims with respect to non-trade transaction. It excludes loan receivables and some receivables from related parties.

(Closing Inventory * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents tangible assets held for sale in the ordinary course of business, or goods in the process of production for such sale, or materials to be consumed in the production of goods and services for sale. It excludes assets held for rental purposes.

(Other Current Assets * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents all current assets not accounted for in accounts receivable and closing inventory.

(Net Tangible & Intangible Assets * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents tangible or intangible property held by businesses for use in the production or supply of goods and services or for rental to others in the regular operations of the business. It excludes those assets intended for sale. Examples of such items are plant, equipment, patents, goodwill, etc. Valuation of net fixed assets is the recorded net value of accumulated depreciation, amortization and depletion.

(All Other Assets & Adjustments * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents all other assets not elsewhere recorded, such as long-term bonds.

Average Total Assets

This figure represents the average value of all resources controlled by an enterprise as a result of past transactions or events from which future economic benefits may be obtained.

(Total Current Liabilities * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents obligations that are expected to be paid within one year, or within the normal operating cycle, whichever is longer. Current liabilities are generally paid out of current assets or through creation of other current liabilities. Examples of such liabilities include accounts payable, customer advances, etc.

(Current Bank Loans * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents all current loans and notes payable to Canadian chartered banks and foreign bank subsidiaries, with the exception of loans from a foreign bank, loans secured by real estate mortgages, bankers acceptances, bank mortgages and the current portion of long-term bank loans.

(Other Current Liabilities * 100) / Total Assets

(Long-Term Liabilities * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents obligations that are not reasonably expected to be liquidated within the normal operating cycle of the business but, instead, are payable at some date beyond that time. It includes obligations such as long-term bank loans and notes payable to Canadian chartered banks and foreign subsidiaries, with the exception of loans secured by real estate mortgages, loans from foreign banks and bank mortgages and other long-term liabilities.

(Total Liabilities * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents the obligations of an enterprise arising from past transactions or events, the settlements of which may result in the transfer of assets, provision of services or other yielding of economic benefits in the future.

(Total Equity * 100) / Total Assets

This percentage represents the net worth of businesses and includes elements such as the value of common and preferred shares, as well as earned, contributed and other surpluses.

Average Total Liabilities + Average Total Equity

This figure represents the sum of two separate line items, which are added together and checked against a company’s total assets. This figure must match total assets to ensure a balance sheet is properly balanced.

UK financial firms ‘may be lending over £174m a week to at-risk gamblers’

Bank data analysis suggests lenders could be unwittingly fuelling gambling problems by extending credit

Financial institutions in the UK may be lending more than £174m a week to people who are using a risky proportion of their income on gambling, an analysis of the spending patterns of loan customers suggests.

The credit technology firm Abound looked at the open banking data of people who applied for its loans and used artificial intelligence to assess all their financial transactions over a six-month period.

The leading debt charity StepChange said the results suggested lenders could be unwittingly fuelling gambling problems by extending credit to people who deposited much of their money in betting accounts or used it to wager in high street bookmakers.

Abound refuses anyone who deposits more than 30% of their income into gambling accounts on average over six months, or anyone who deposits more than 100% of their income in any one month during the period. It said it turned down about 29% of loan applicants on these grounds.

The firm said these customers would not have been identified as risky borrowers by more traditional credit checks used by lenders who did not routinely analyse open banking data.

Based on Abound’s target market in which lenders extend £600m of credit a week, the company estimated that at least £174m was being lent each week to people who would not have passed its own checks.

Debate continues over the government’s much-delayed proposals to toughen affordability checks to determine whether gamblers are spending beyond their means. Unlike Abound’s vetting method, such checks would be based on losses, rather than the amount of money deposited into an account, which can be offset by betting wins.

Losses of £1,000 a day, or £2,000 over nine months, would trigger enhanced interaction by gambling firms, with customers potentially asked to hand over bank statements or other information to show they can afford losses on that scale.

Ministers say the planned checks will only affect 3% of gamblers and could prevent vulnerable people being plunged into financial ruin.

Some pro-gambling campaign groups and lobbyists have questioned the impact on civil liberties and argue that people’s enjoyment should not be disrupted for the sake of those suffering from a gambling problem.

Peter Tutton, the head of policy at StepChange, said: “Previous research on the experiences of StepChange clients found that lenders are not always quick enough to spot warning signs that someone is borrowing to fund gambling.

“It’s important that lenders continue to evolve their approach to identifying gambling harm by adopting stringent checks and affordability assessments.”

after newsletter promotion

Gerald Chappell, Abound’s chief executive, said: “Currently, lenders aren’t doing anything wrong. But the tools they are using, like credit ratings, are outdated and unable to identify many financially vulnerable potential borrowers in the online era.”

Abound said it lent to 550 people every week but declined a further 230 on the basis of gambling spending. Of those who were declined, 15% had previously been able to get loans elsewhere.

Betting with a credit card is already banned but there has typically been little to stop gamblers spending money obtained via other forms of borrowing.
