First Day of School Activities for Morning Work (Free Printables)

The first day of school is always an exciting time (and sometimes scary time 😉 ). My first principal would always say that we couldn’t leave the day before the first day until we had that first day of school activity ready and waiting on the desks for the students. I still remember and follow this advice after ten years of teaching. Having a task for students to do right when they come in definitely helps with the nerves and jitters for both the teacher and the students. This post will share some of my go-to first day of school activities that I have used for morning work over the years (and they are all free!)

Back-to-School Crossword Puzzle and Word Search

The first morning work option for the first day of school are school-themed crossword puzzles and/or word searches. These activities are a simple way to ease your students into being back in school without heavy academic work. And most students love word searches and crossword puzzles. Copy these back and front and let the students choose which ones to complete, or have them do both.

Choice Board of Activities

It is no secret that I love using choice boards in my instruction. Using a morning work choice board that first day of school is a great way to get to know what your students prefer and what activities they are drawn to. It will give them ownership of the tasks and give you great insight into their preferences.

You could even have them work on the same choice board all week, continuing a task or choosing a new one each day.

Quick Student Survey

Student surveys are another option for a first day of school activity. Allow the students time to answer a few simple questions about themselves. You can then use those surveys later for partner or whole group activities where students share facts about each other.

Read and Respond Printable

If your morning work time needs to be a bit longer in length, I recommend this first day of school activity.

Place a basket of high-interest books and this two-page printable that has a few simple questions about the book. The students will read the chosen book for 10-15 minutes and then answer the questions.

Free printables for morning work on the first day of school! Worried about what to have the students do when they come in on the first day? Grab some free first day of school activities for morning work on this post!

This is another first day of school activity that could last all week, with the students choosing new books to read and respond to each day (with blank copies of the printables).

Complete the Math Facts

If you teach only math, this next first day of school activity is a great option. I actually like combining this one with the student survey and copying it on the back. For this activity, the students complete the missing blanks in a math facts table. This also serves as a great way to get a quick glance at your students’ multiplication fact knowledge.

Back to School Coloring Page

Want a first day of school morning work activity that is super easy for the students to complete? Try this back to school coloring page. Just place some crayons or colored pencils and let the students color their nerves away.

A bonus idea for this back to school coloring printable is to have several copies on hand for meet the teacher or open house night for younger siblings to color.

Tips for that First Day of School

  • Assign seats – I have never not assigned seats. I think it helps with nerves and students who worry about where to sit or worry that no one will want to sit next to them.
  • Greet the students at the door and help them find their seats, if needed. If all of the students come it at once (versus staggering), quickly greet them and welcome them outside in the hall and then stagger them in the classroom.
  • Have the students take all of their belongings to their desks, book bags in all. This way you can call over the students one group a time to turn in supplies or paperwork from open house (and this way you are not worrying about the book bag mess yet). When all supplies have been turned in, demonstrate your book bag procedures and then have groups of students put their book bags up correctly while the rest continue working on the morning work.
  • Have the focus of that first day be more on relationship building, getting comfortable with the classroom and you, and getting to know each other. I sprinkle in procedures and rules as they naturally arise, but I don’t spend my entire first day on this. We do more of that on the second day and the days following.

Morning work is a valuable part of the daily routine in the classroom. It refers to brief, focused activities students engage in at the beginning of the school day. Morning work helps students transition into the learning mindset, reinforces previously learned concepts, and allows teachers to address individual student needs.

Morning work can include various activities, such as reviewing skills, practicing newer concepts, or engaging in creative tasks. It helps set a positive tone for the day, provides a routine, and allows teachers to observe and assess students’ progress. By starting the day with purposeful morning work, students are ready for a successful and productive day of learning.

Morning Work Ideas for Kindergarten

If you have ever taught kindergarten, you know the craziness of a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday… morning. Morning work is a great way to get students started on a positive note, allow for review and practice, or just have a little fun. Plus, it will calm things down a tad and get kids settled for the day! These morning work ideas for kindergarten are just a few to could consider.

Alphabet Recognition

Developing strong alphabet recognition skills is essential for early literacy success. Here are some letter recognition activities that can transform your morning work into a valuable letter review time.

Utilize colorful alphabet posters to engage students in letter recognition. Display them around the classroom, encouraging students to identify and name the letters they see. A “Letter of the Day” is a fun way to practice the alphabet with a whole group and reinforce each letter during morning work the next morning. Read a book about things that start with that letter and create an anchor chart with pictures made by students that match words for that particular letter.

morning work-alphabet posters

During morning work, have students search for letters in various contexts, such as books, newspapers, and magazines. Add fine motor skills, give students blank paper with a specific letter, and have them to cut out objects or words from newspapers, magazines, and old books and glue them to the paper that starts with the letter. This activity promotes letter recognition and familiarity. You can make it easier on yourself and use spot the letter mats !

Counting and Number Sense

Building a strong foundation in counting and number sense sets the stage for mathematical growth. You can easily incorporate some math activities into your morning work routine.

Easily enhance number sense and counting skills with these hands-on math activities and worksheets. With hands-on learning, number recognition, counting, and basic addition and subtraction, incorporating this into morning work routines promotes a strong foundation in number sense while making learning enjoyable. Daily Math Mats are also a great way to review concepts you have already taught to keep them fresh in students’ minds.

Fine Motor Skills Morning Work Practice

Developing fine motor skills is essential for students, and students are developing these fine motor skills throughout the primary grades. Encourage their growth with activities that have easy-to-follow step-by-step directions.

Children love to draw! Directed drawing activities not only promote fine motor skills but also foster creativity. Students follow step-by-step instructions to create simple drawings, allowing them to practice hand-eye coordination and pencil control. Fine motor skills practice enhances students’ hand strength, coordination, and dexterity, which is crucial for tasks like writing, cutting, and manipulating objects. These activities also support cognitive development and concentration.

Morning Work Ideas for First Grade

When students hit 1st grade, we want to make morning work meaningful and inviting. Students should practice already taught skills, and we want to reinforce good habits and ideas. From sight word practice to math fact review and creative writing prompts, you can bring in many different morning work activities that provide an engaging start to the day and promote important literacy and numeracy skills.

Developing strong sight word recognition is crucial for reading fluency. In 1st grade, we want students to not only remember their kindergarten sight words but add additional sight words to their vocabulary.

Have students practice sight words with engaging activities and worksheets , like find and color sight word sheets, play-doh mats, and others that help students master essential sight words and build their reading skills.

Reinforcing math facts is essential for building a solid foundation in numeracy. Morning work is a great time to allow for math fact practice! Give students an opportunity to work through their math facts in a no-pressure situation and be ready for the math lesson of the day.

Use interactive activities and worksheets to review and practice addition facts up to 20 during morning work. This will help students improve their fluency and mental math abilities making your math block easier. Math Mats are also a great option for review!

Math Morning Work Centers

Explore math centers that focus on numbers up to 20. These number sense math centers provide hands-on activities and games to reinforce counting, number recognition, and basic addition and subtraction skills.

Give students extra practice during morning work with worksheets that review skills already taught, or if you have students who excel, give them an activity based on a new concept and see if they can rise to the challenge.

Morning work is a great time to help encourage creative expression and writing skills with creative writing mats . Obviously, offer a variety of writing activities and prompts throughout the year and inspire students to write and engage in imaginative storytelling or, at the very least, practice proper letter formation and editing.

Morning Work Ideas for Second Grade

Morning work in the second grade is a valuable opportunity for students to start their day on a productive note. Much like first grade, it allows them to review and practice essential skills while developing a positive learning environment.

From grammar and language practice to math word problems and challenges, as well as engaging science experiments and mini-projects, these morning work activities will get students thinking critically and reinforce key concepts across different subjects before you start your lessons!

Grammar and language may be hard to fit into your day. But strengthening grammar and language skills is essential for effective communication. Having students practice specific skills like long vowels, short vowels, capitalization, periods, etc., through morning work makes for great review.

Try resources, like word work practice mats , that provide quick, interactive activities that easily reinforce grammar rules, parts of speech, and language conventions.

In second grade, students will begin to work on solving math problems independently. Finding quick math challenges, activities, and worksheets with word problems are great for morning work.

Look for resources that offer engaging math word problems and challenges that kids can work on unassisted. Encourage them to use their mental math abilities, the strategies they have been taught, and the math tools available to them in the classroom.

Mindful Math for 2nd Grade offers fun math activities that kids can work through independently during morning work. For a spiral-type review covering different math objectives, consider trying 2nd Grade Math Mats .

You can foster scientific inquiry and hands-on learning during morning work, as well. Consider including easy science experiments and mini-projects. They do not need to be anything that requires a lot of setup or cleanup and allow students to work through fun activities independently. Simply leave out a few materials for students to explore as they arrive in the morning.

Above all, morning work in kindergarten, first, and second grade offers opportunities to engage kids in activities that target important skills across various subjects. By incorporating these resources into your morning routine, you provide meaningful and enjoyable learning opportunities for students.

First Grade Morning Work Ideas and Tips

May 8, 2022 misskindergarten Leave a Comment

As elementary teachers, we know that the first few minutes after arrival can set the tone for the entire school day.  This is why a morning routine is so important!  One of my favorite elements of an effective first grade morning routine is using seatwork.  I love how it can create an environment of learning from the moment that students walk through the door.  Keep reading for some of my favorite tips and resources for first grade morning work !

first day of school morning work

Benefits of Morning Work

There are many reasons why it’s helpful to begin the school day with seatwork. While every teacher ultimately has unique reasons for choosing a morning work routine, here are a few of my favorites.

Classroom Management

Completed first grade morning work.

Arrival procedures vary from school to school, but I think most teachers can agree that there is a flurry of things that need our attention as soon as students walk in the door. Providing a routine task that students can work on as they arrive is a great classroom management tool . It will give you the time you need to check in with individual students, read parent notes, take attendance, and attend to all of the other things that pop up first thing in the morning.

Set the Tone

Morning work is a wonderful way to set the tone for learning and help young learners ease into the school day. Students can independently work at their own pace as they review grade level concepts. This is also a great time to play some calming music or use a noise level visual reminder to help center students for a day of learning.

Ongoing Assessment

Since morning work is usually done independently, it can serve as an additional informal assessment tool. A quick scan of student papers during morning work time can provide a snapshot of how the class understands and retains grade level concepts.

Tips for Choosing Morning Work Activities

If you’re new to morning work or looking to switch up your morning work routine, I wanted to share some tips for choosing the right seatwork for your class. Here are some questions you can ask yourself when deciding on a morning work activity for your students.

Is This Meaningful?

An important thing to think about when adding any learning activity to your routine, including morning work, is whether or not it is meaningful.  Provide activities that allow students to practice concepts that they have recently been learning or review skills that they need to keep sharp!

By choosing meaningful learning activities, the morning work routine can be a wonderful way to add skills review to the school day.

Can This Be Completed Independently?

A completed morning work worksheet completed with marker.

An important part of any first grade morning work routine is that students can independently begin their work while you are welcoming students and taking care of loose ends.

One way to encourage independence in the morning routine is to keep the overall morning work format the same all year.  When students are familiar with the format of the activity, you will be less likely to hear a chorus of “How do I do this?” ringing through the classroom each morning.

Will This Keep My Students Engaged?

In order to keep the students engaged and avoid routine fatigue, it’s helpful to keep the content fresh!  In my first grade morning work bundle , I have a complete set of seasonal morning work for every month of the school year.  This provides students with a familiar task to complete independently each morning, but with fresh content to go along with each season of the school year.

Is This Low Prep?

The morning work activities that you choose for your class should be low prep! This way, it’s easy to have everything ready when the students walk through the door each morning.

Two first grade morning work worksheets colored with marker.

One thing to consider is whether you want to create monthly (or weekly) morning work packets or if you’d rather print and store pages to distribute daily.

Some teachers like to print and distribute packets to save on prep time and handing out papers. On the other hand, some teachers like using single pages so they don’t have to worry about misplaced packets. Choose the method that makes the most sense for your situation!

Is This the Right Length?

There is a “sweet spot” when it comes to finding the right assignment length for morning work.  There will always be some students who finish quickly and others who don’t quite complete the activity before it’s time to move on.  However, every teacher finds that perfect length that minimizes the number of early finishers, gives most students enough time to finish, and doesn’t take up a large chunk of the morning.  This is different for each class and the needs of the students.

Since the purpose of morning work is to keep students independently engaged in meaningful tasks, it’s also helpful to identify some routine early finisher activities . This way, students can independently transition from morning work to the next activity.

first day of school morning work

Classroom Management

Classroom ideas, classroom community, the best morning work ever.

Whether you or not you love morning work, it’s necessary for so many of us. It’s typically the very first activity students will do each day. So how can teachers make the first impression of each day one that students look forward to, and sets a positive tone for the rest of the day? The best morning work ever is beneficial for my students, and for me!

Morning work is the first activity students do daily. How can teachers make the first impression of the day positive, and one students look forward to?

You May Need Morning Work If:

  • For example: Students start arriving at 7:30, but school doesn’t officially start until 8:00
  • but some students are eating, while others ate at home
  • You want more PLAY based opportunities for your students
  • Problem-solving

What’s the problem with paper/pencil morning work?

For TWO years I HATED morning work. More importantly, my students (mostly) hated it. Why? It was boring, and was honestly just serving as busy work.

I thought about how much my students loved Fun Friday when they earn free time where they get to play, and I really wanted more of that incorporated into our day, but where?

After a lot of thinking about how to make morning work more engaging, I decided on a more social, play-based approach.

Our Morning Routine

Morning work is actually just one part of our morning routine.

An organized and well-managed morning routine takes time, and lots of practice and modeling.

And please note that our full morning routine complete with morning work, is NOT something we start the very first day of school.

In fact, for the first week or two of school, students have an activity (word search, mystery picture, color by number, etc) to complete at their desks.

Another piece of our morning routine that’s really beneficial is having something on the screen that reminds students what they need to do. I use these assignment templates .

Have an agenda displayed so students know exactly what to do each morning.

Morning Work STEM/Building Supplies

These are definitely student favorites. Having a variety of “building” supplies gives students the opportunity to use their imaginations and create whatever they want.

  • Linking Cubes
  • Legos – I use this off-brand.
  • Magnetic Tiles
  • Bristle Building Blocks
  • Building Bars
  • Interlocking Gears
  • Building Disks
  • Magnetic Blocks
  • Brain Flakes
  • Magnetic Building Sticks
  • Pattern Blocks

Morning work is the first activity students do daily. How can teachers make the first impression of the day positive, and one students look forward to?

Some students enjoy playing a more structured game, which is fine by me. I learned the hard way to steer clear of board games – they take up a lot of space, and the pieces are a nightmare.

  • Matching/Memory
  • Crazy 8s, Go Fish, Old Maid

Students use supplies to build, create, and imagine.

  • Pyramid Puzzle

Fun First Day of School Activities for 2nd Grade

Back to School

Looking for first day of school activities for 2nd grade? You’re in the right place! A great way to begin the first week of school is with the very best first day lesson plans. But what does that look like, you ask? I will be sharing my favorite fun activities for your new second graders in this post!

I know the beginning of the school year can bring about a lot of overwhelm, so this post will give you a snapshot of what a “best-ever”(according to my 2nd graders) first day of 2nd grade can look like. I will show you my first day of school plans so that you can see what realistic first day lessons actually look like. My goal in this post is to help you start your new school year strong!

Before the Students Arrive on the 1st Day of School

All your students will care about in those first few minutes, especially if they could not attend an open house night, is whether they are in the correct place and where they should put their stuff. Have name tags on their cubbies or lockers already in place. I always set up for the first day before the morning so that all the student materials are set and ready to go.

The First 5 Minutes of the First Day in 2nd Grade

Greet your new students outside your classroom door. At our school, all of the students are dropped off and coming down the hall in masses, it’s helpful if they can spot you right away!

Why the first 5 minutes are so important:

Being front and center right outside your classroom door for all your students is essential, but once you greet them, you have students who are walking into the classroom, unsure of what to do next. Uncertainty can heighten their first day jitters and bring about unwanted behavior.

Here’s how to keep your classroom calm and in control those first few minutes while you’re focused on your arriving students:

  • Greet your new second graders at the door.
  • Give them clear directions on what you want to do. (Verbally say what you want them to do, so there’s no room for confusion. Remember, your classroom is an entirely new environment, so telling them explicitly where to go and what to do is essential.)
  • Have visual directions on your board is optional, but always nice in case they forget.

This level of clarity dramatically cuts down on wandering kids, students coming up to you asking what they should be doing while you’re trying to help another student with a zipper that’s stuck, etc.

First Day of School morning Activity: 2nd Grade Morning Work

Playdough activity.

This is a fun activity for first day morning work that they’ll remember for the entire year. I’ve used this idea for the first day of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. They all love it. Invite students to use play dough to make their name, create a model of what they did over the summer, etc. I love giving the students playdough because of its instant joyful effect on them.

The second graders walk in and see a ball of playdough, a colorful mat, and a welcome card with directions on how they can use the playdough.

Can you be nervous when you get to immediately play with something and use that playdough as basically a stress ball? I think not! No, seriously, they instantly light up, and it makes for excellent light conversation as the 2nd graders are meeting their new classmates. “What are you making?” is a typical conversation starter.

Have the Playdough Double as a Back-to-School Gift

The first day playdough is always a gift to them, and I let my students take it home as a back-to-school gift. This can also be “gifted” on the second day of second grade (we like to make that day special because of the play on words).

Once most of your class is in the classroom, start walking around to see how the students interact.

As a new teacher on the first day of second grade, I would always think, “What will I talk about with these new students who I barely know?!” Yes, we ALL experience first day jitters, including adults!

So this is what I do, I comment on what they’re making and use it to talk about their summer. Some choose to recreate their family out of playdough, so I might ask them to tell me more about their family.

ALL ABOUT ME Worksheet

Some students will make their name out of playdough and want to move on pretty quickly, so have an All About Me first day morning work printable ready WITH crayons or at least a sharpened pencil ready to go. You might have to sort supplies later, so having something prepared for them will be vital if you want to start your 1st day of school calmly and peacefully.

First impressions are important. What kind of learning environment do you want to cultivate this year? If it’s a calming classroom, having soft instrumental music playing instantly tells the students they’re walking into a calm, peaceful learning environment.

Activity time for playdough + about me: Approximately 20-45 minutes

The playdough and all about me activity can take longer if needed. On the first day of school there are so many unpredictable things that happen. Maybe a new student is added to your roster and doesn’t speak English so your time is needed there. Maybe there’s a late bus coming, and 6 of your students are on that bus, so you don’t want to move on. Or you need a moment to gather your thoughts because you’re new, overwhelmed, stressed, etc…all reasons why I’ve stretched this first activity to be a couple of minutes longer than initially planned.

If this isn’t your first 1st day of 2nd grade and you have many things planned, the playdough + all about me activity can be put away quickly.

Tip: I usually have them put their unfinished All About Me paper in a folder or in their desk as something they can continually work on throughout the day as a time filler because we all know there are random pockets of time that first day. And keeping your students focused during those times is key.

After the announcements go off, that’s my cue that my day is officially beginning. I do lunch count and take attendance (hopefully, I remember lol).

Start Building a Classroom Community Immediately

The first day of school is the perfect opportunity to start building a strong sense of community in your classroom. So you must take some time on the first day of school to help students get to know one another. You’ll be doing this throughout the first day and during the first week of school, but starting with students’ names is the very first way to do this. You need to know their names, and they need to know each other’s names. So this is how I make sure I know every student’s name within the first hour.

Gather Your Students for the 1st Day of School Morning Meeting

1. teach your first classroom attention getter right away.

Transition the students from their tables/desks to the classroom meeting area. This is my first day of school script for the first time I address the class as a whole:

I usually use an attention getter like, “Ok, everyone, when I say class, you say yes.”

Teacher-“Class”

Class-“Yes”

Teacher-Let’s practice a couple more times, and this time when you say “Yes,” I want you to fold your hands and look at me as you say yes. (To minimize distractions)

Then I announce that we will have a morning meeting and play a get to know you game.

The Name Game:

Keep it simple and have every student think of an animal name that begins with the same letter as their name. For older kids, it could be an adjective. But for second graders, an animal name is perfect.

I tell them that we will go around in a circle, and you’ll point to every student that goes before you, say the animal and name, then introduce yourself with the animal + your first name. The person who goes last will have to know everyone’s name and animal, so tell the students up front and see if anyone wants to volunteer.

Important: The teacher goes LAST. (Because you want to remember all of your students’ names.)

The first student goes. Let’s use Foley as an example. So Foley would say, “I’m Fox Foley.”

Then the next three students go, let’s say, Chris, Ashley, and Brice.

Chris would point to Foley and say, “Fox Foley” and I’m Catepillar Chris.

Ashley would say, “Fox Foley, Catepillar Chris, and I’m Alligator Ashley.

Brice would now have to remember everyone who went before him and introduce himself, “Fox Foley, Catepillar Chris, Alligator Ashley, and I’m Bear Brice.”

This goes on until everyone in the circle is finished. The game gets more challenging as it goes, so I always let my new group of 2nd graders know that we will help them if they forget. Usually, you can jog their memory if they forget a student’s name by saying the animal. So if a student freezes after saying “Fox Foley, _____,” I say, “Catepilllllarrr…………” and then they usually remember, and if they don’t, I finish it for them.

Tip: Tell students to point at or look at every student as they say their name, which helps them put a face to a name.

Once your first hour is complete, you can plug and play any of the following first day of school activities to suit your schedule.

Teach Classroom Routines

The first weeks of school are an excellent time to teach all of your expectations. It doesn’t have to be boring either! A great activity for teaching routines is to make it so much fun for them! Do this by playing the Classroom Procedure Game! It’s such an easy way to sneak into learning the essential expectations. Create a list of sticky notes (or use my classroom procedure game playing cards) and separate them out between procedures to practice and procedures to master.

Read Alouds for the First Day of 2nd Grade

First day jitters.

First Day Jitters Summary: Sarah is afraid to start at a new school, but both she and the reader are in for a surprise when she gets to her class.

Book Activity Idea: Make “Jitter Juice”

Jitter Juice is typically fruit punch, relabeled as Jitter Juice.

Wanna hear a back to school horror story? In my district, parents preferred less sugary options. I found this out while pouring fruit punch into the cups while my students were at lunch. I was so excited to read the book, First Day Jitters and give them Jitter Juice, I had 30 minutes to figure out an alternative. Fortunately, I had a bunch of new mini-water bottles that I hurried up and made new Jitter Juice labels for. I told the students that the Jitter Juice is magical and it might taste like something unique for each student. I got lucky because my students LOVED it. One said, “ooh it tastes like popcorn!” Another exlaimed that it tasted like watermelon. Of course one said it tastes like water lol. One student kept that little water, I mean, Jitter Juice in her desk the entire year because it helped her be calm.

In Our Classroom

Summary: In Our Classroom   helps empower students by teaching them to think about what is just right for them, celebrate their differences, and embrace one another to build an inclusive classroom community.

Book Activity: I love this book for discussing what it means to be a classroom family and discussing how students will learn in many ways. Then this can lead to introducing flexible seating options and expectations.

Start Team Building Right Away

During the first week of school, your learning environment will be filled with so much time spent learning together in teams and small groups. Here are my top small group first day of school activities:

Small Group First Day of School Activity Idea #1: Teamwork Puzzles

Small group teamwork puzzles.

Go to the dollar store and get simple puzzles that look like this:

Buy 5 of them (or more if you have a large class size or want smaller group sizes).

Set a timer and have each group work on assembling the puzzle piece.

I always like to observe or take notes to see how different students are working together, who’s taking the lead, who’s not participating as much, etc.

Small Group First Day of School Activity Idea #2: Stem Challenges

You will need spaghetti stick noodles and a bag of miniature marshmallows for this activity.

Set a timer and see which group can build the tallest structure in the time given.

Other Fun 2nd Grade Activities for the First Day of School

I have had almost a decade of planning first days of school. Here are some more favorites that I’ve rounded up to help your new classmates get to know each other, start making new friends, and ultimately build a classroom family.

First Day Activity: Beach Ball Get to Know You Game

Students sit on top of their desks or tables (or you can go outside), and they toss an inflatable icebreaker ball to each other.

Students can choose whether they want to answer the question their left or right thumb lands on. They read it out loud and then toss it to the next classmate.

Warning: Since there is a flying inflatable ball tossed around, I teach my students a safety tip to keep someone from being hit because they weren’t paying attention. Tell your students to say the person’s name they will throw it to next, wait for eye contact, then toss it. We also do underhand tosses instead of overhand tosses. This part is important to model before you begin the get-to-know game.

The best part? Having an inflatable icebreaker ball in the classroom is so handy. After we play it together during the first week of school, it becomes a great brain break or time filler activity throughout the rest of the school year- with ZERO PREP. You just grab the ball and start the game. I love it and I hope you will too!

First Day Activity: Snowball Fight

What I love about this whole group first day of school activity is that it is so simple to prep.

You’ll Need:

Your 2nd Graders

That’s it!

Snowball Fight Icebreaker Activity Directions:

  • First, have your second graders write 1-3 facts about themselves on a piece of paper. Since this IS the first day of 2nd grade, they will need a quick lesson on what would make a good fact.
  • Next, tell the 2nd graders that they will be crumpling up the paper and having a snowball fight, and at the end, they’ll have to guess who wrote the fact.
  • Then, demonstrate why they need to write a descriptive fact. I ask the class to raise their hand if they’re seven years old. Almost half the class raises their hand, so I point out that wouldn’t be a helpful or interesting fact since it is so general.
  • Once your 2nd graders crumple the paper up into a ‘snowball’ set a timer for 30 seconds and begin the snowball fight. (This is how the papers are “mixed” up).
  • At the end of the 30 seconds, everyone grabs the closest snowball and has to try to find the person who wrote it.

Tip: Tell your 2nd graders that hobbies and games make great facts. Their favorite thing to do at recess is one of my favorite examples that I give them because my second graders love recess and they like knowing who they could play with because of shared interests.

First Day Activity: Scavenger Hunt

Classroom scavenger hunts make the best first day of school activity for 2nd grade, because your students are given time to explore their classroom! This is a simple print-and-go activity. I recommend giving your students clipboards (or whiteboards/books) to use as a surface to write on as they walk around the classroom.

To prep for the first day scavenger hunt activity, you’ll need to create a list of things that can be found in your classroom or school. I’ve included a printable list below that you can use. Print one copy for each student in your class.

Classmate Scavenger Hunt:

On the first day of school, have your students walk around the room and find someone who…

Has the same color eyes as them

Has a sibling in our class

Likes to play the same sport as them

When they find someone who meets one of the criteria on their list, they write their name next to it. This is a fantastic way for your students to get to know both you and their classmates on the first day of school!

First Day Activity: All About Me Posters

On the first day of school, I like to have my students create an all about me poster. This is a great activity for them to do so that you can get to know your students and they can share some information about themselves with the class.

To prep for this activity, you’ll need to gather some supplies. I like to use construction paper because it’s colorful and easy for the kids to work with. You’ll also need scissors, glue, crayons, and markers.

Once you have your supplies, you’ll need to give your students some time to create their posters. I like to give them about 30 minutes. On their posters, they should include their name, a picture of themselves, and some information about themselves. They can write about their favorite things, things they like to do, their family, and anything else they want to include. The all about me worksheet from earlier serves as a good brainstorming sheet.

When they’re finished, have them share their posters with the class. This is a great way for everyone to learn a little bit about each other on the first day of school!

First Day Activity: Get to Know You Bingo

This is a fun first day of school activity that will help your students get to know each other and you! To prep for this activity, you’ll need to create a bingo board for each student in your class. I’ve included a printable bingo board below that you can use. Print one copy for each student in your class.

Once you have your bingo boards, you’ll need to think of some things that you can put in the squares.

I like to include things like:

  • I have a pet
  • I have a sibling
  • I like to swim
  • I like books about animals

When you have your list of things, call out each one and have the students mark off the square if it applies to them. The first person to get five in a row wins!

First Day Activity: All About Me Bag

This is a fun first day of school activity that will help your students get to know each other and you! To prep for this activity, you’ll need a brown paper bag for each student in your class, markers, and they will need to bring in some small items representing things about them.

Some ideas for items to include are:

  • A picture of their family
  • Their favorite book
  • A souvenir from a place they’ve been over the summer
  • Something that represents their hobby

Once you have your supplies, give each 2nd grader a brown paper bag. Tell them to decorate the bag with their name and a picture of themselves.

Then, they can fill the bag with the items that represent things about them.

When they’re finished, have them share the all about me bags with the class and see what they have in common!

First Day Activity: Time Capsule

This is a fun first day of school activity that will help your students reflect on their year at the end of the year. To prep for this activity, you’ll need to gather some supplies. You’ll need a box or container for each student in your class, markers, and some small items that represent things about the year.

  • Pictures /drawings of friends
  • School work
  • A top 10 list of things they like at the moment

Once you have your supplies, give each student a box or container. Tell them to decorate the outside with their name and the year. Then, they can fill the box with the items that represent things about their year. I usually give students until the end of the first week of school to add to it.

First Day Activity: Word Search

Having a custom word search as a first day of school activity helps your students get to know how each other spells their name! You’ll need a word search for each student in your class and pencils.

You can create your own word search or find one online. When I create my own back to school word search with my students’ names, I like to use this website . You can create a word search with words related to the first day of school, such as names of classmates, teacher, school, etc.

Once you have your supplies, give each student a word search and let them work on that while you take classroom pictures of each of your second graders!

First Day Activity: Find Someone Who…

The find someone who activity will help your 2nd graders get to know each other and you! To prep for this activity, you’ll need to gather some supplies. You’ll need a Find Someone Who sheet of paper for each student in your class and markers.

On the sheet of paper, you’ll need to write a list of things students can learn about each other. For example:

  • Find someone who has a sister
  • Find someone who likes to read
  • Find someone who has a pet

Once you have your supplies, give each student a sheet of paper. Tell them to find someone in the class who meets each criterion on the list. When they find someone, they should write their name next to the criterion. This is the best first day of 2nd grader activity because it gets your students up and moving around, so do this when you’re students have been in their seats for a while and it doubles as a brain break movement activity!

First Day Activity: Summer Vacation Printable

This is a fun first day of school activity for 2nd grade that will help your students reflect on their summer vacation. To prep for this activity, you’ll need a graphic organizer for each student in your class and crayons or markers.

Once you have your supplies, give each student a summer vacation graphic organizer. Tell them to reflect on their summer vacation and fill out the graphic organizer. They can share their summer vacation with the class when they’re finished. This is a great way for everyone to learn a little bit about each other on the first day of school!

And that’s it! I hope my second graders’ “best first day of school activities” are ones you and your 2nd grade class will enjoy as well! Here’s to a great school year!

Morning Work for Elementary Students: A More Meaningful Alternative for 2024

If you are a teacher looking for meaningful and purposeful morning work for elementary students, then you’ve found the right place!

Like many aspects of my quest for mastering classroom management, “morning work” was a process of trial and error. When I think back, I feel embarrassed that it took me so long to find such a simple, yet highly effective solution. Spoiler alert: the simple solution is independent reading. I’ll share below why it’s such a powerful way to start your school day and tips for how to implement it in your elementary classroom.

Are you looking for alternatives to elementary morning work, bellwork, or bellringers? Try out these fun, hands on, no prep, paperless, meaningful, and engaging classroom management procedures, strategies, tip and routines from the Clutter Free Classroom.

Why Traditional Morning Work Doesn’t Work

If I was asked to name the time of day when the students are the least settled. It’s a no-brainer! The most chatty and the least focused it would be a close tie between “first thing in the morning” and “right after lunch/recess.”

Post-specialists would be a runner-up.

The irony of this is that it is during the “first thing in the morning” time frame that you have the most things to do in a short amount of time and can’t devote your undivided attention to the wee ones before you. You need to check homework, take attendance and lunch count, check for notes, and much more. On a side note, check out this lunch order display if you need support in streamlining your lunch count in the morning.

In the morning, your students are excited. It’s been about 18 hours since they have seen you and their classmates and a lot happens during that time. They have breaking news to share. Maybe they saw a bunny on the way to school. Perhaps a tooth fell out or a cat did some funny trick. Maybe they ate chicken for dinner and can’t wait to share that earth-shattering fact with others.

Journal Writing Morning Work

Early in my career, I thought the best thing to do would be to channel those thoughts into journal writing.

Are you looking for alternatives to elementary morning work, bellwork, or bellringers? Try out these fun, hands on, no prep, paperless, meaningful, and engaging classroom management procedures, strategies, tip and routines from the Clutter Free Classroom.

Doing journal writing as morning work in my classroom was not successful. My students worked at different paces. Some moved quick. Others appeared to lack a pulse. Many f elt stressed. Several had chronic cases of, “I don’t have anything to write about.” In a nutshell, it was too open-ended. Moving journal and prompt-response writing to a different time of day magically made it a productive and purposeful activity. If you are interested in learning how I transformed my students into confident, capable writers, head on over to this post about how to motivate and engage reluctant writers .

Bell Work Morning Work

After I reflected on the journal writing morning work failure, I moved on to what is traditionally known as “bell work.”

You know… unfinished work, morning jumpstarts, mad minutes, insert any other type of busy work known to man here.

Again, it was a flop.

This is because they lacked the independence to follow the directions or legitimately needed assistance. But, I couldn’t provide them with assistance because I was taking attendance and checking their daily communication folders, which is why they were doing said task to begin with. Plus it felt meaningless. If you are interested, check out this taking attendance resource and daily communication folder resource!

Handwriting Morning Work

So then I tried handwriting. Once upon a pre-Common Core time, cursive was taught in third grade and it seemed like a good task to start the day with.

But some were masters of upswings and downcurves while simultaneously chatting the ear off the peers at their table.

Independent Reading Morning Work

Alas, I started using the Daily 5 in my classroom. Well, the Daily 5 with my own twists, but the same concept. And I needed to fit in a block of time for “independent reading.”

And just like that it all clicked. I was left scratching my head and thinking, “Why did it take me so long to do something so easy?”

We always start the day with a morning song . It is used to get them settled. When it ends they are expected to be at their seats and reading silently.

It’s that simple!

Are you looking for alternatives to elementary morning work, bellwork, or bellringers? Try out these fun, hands on, no prep, paperless, meaningful, and engaging classroom management procedures, strategies, tip and routines from the Clutter Free Classroom.

Why Should Elementary Students Start the Day with Reading?

I’ve found this to be the best way to start the day because:

  • Everyone can do it. Even wee little non-readers can “read the pictures.”
  • The expectation is silence so it’s easy to keep everyone on track. Plus you can’t read and talk so it’s a no-brainer.
  • If someone comes in late, they can hop right in.
  • It provides a quiet environment that allows the teacher to focus their attention on taking attendanc e
  • It calms the room and gets them ready to focus on learning.

Because this is counted as their 20 minutes of independent reading, I let it go on for that long. This allows me time to do a couple of running records or 1:1 reading conferences each day as well. Win-win! This also provides a nice buffer for tardy students. If you are interested, check out this managing tardy students resource.

Many students opted to record their thinking in their interactive bookmarks , but it was not required at this time of day.

As the 20 minutes was ending, I would distribute their math spiral review activities for a super-quick correcting session/mini-lesson lesson and we would then transition into our guided math workshop instruction.

5 Tips for Using Independent Reading as Morning Work

Here are tips for using independent reading as morning work:

  • To execute your morning routine, I highly recommend teaching and modeling the expectations as part of your classroom procedures and routines and reviewing them often.
  • Specifically model what students should and shouldn’t look like during independent reading.
  • Reteach the expectations as needed throughout the year.
  • Consider starting the day with a morning song. It’s a great way to help them settle into the day. Set the expectation that when it ends they need to be at their seats and reading silently.
  • Decide ahead of time where you would like students to read. Determine if they need to be at their desks or tables or if they can choose a spot in the room.

First Grade Morning Work

When students enter the classroom, they are so excited to see their friends. Some want to talk about what they did the night before while others want to run around. However, how the day starts is a great predictor of how the entire day will go. Thus, teachers need students to enter the classroom calmly and eager to learn. One of the best ways to do this is to have morning work ready before students enter the classroom. Then, they can get to work the second they arrive. Luckily, First Grade Morning Work is ready for the entire year!

First-grade teachers have so much to handle in the morning. For instance, they must submit lunch counts and attendance by a specific time. Additionally, they need to check folders and read parent notes. Honestly, the mornings can be so stressful! If students ask questions and need help, all of these important tasks get pushed back. This means that the entire schedule is off! Thus, it is crucial to have a smooth morning routine . Morning work helps students know exactly what to do when entering the classroom. Since they will get right to work, teachers can handle the morning tasks.

what to do the first day of school for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers

What To Do On The First Day Of School – A Practical Schedule

what to do the first day of school for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade teachers

Wondering what to do on the first day of school?

I was always surprised at how quickly the day would fly by. One minute I'm greeting students, the next, I'm exhaustedly sitting at my desk wondering where the day has gone, why my feet are so tired, and how I could have gone the entire day without doing anything I had planned.

Over the years, I learned to prioritize what I wanted accomplished the first day of school so that I didn't forget to do the most important things. In my opinion, the non-negotiables for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students are:

  • collecting school supplies
  • building classroom community
  • establishing classroom routines and procedures

Figuring Out School Supplies On The First Day Of School

Of all the things to do the first day of school, this is definitely the least important.  But it is also one of the first things you will have to deal with, as students will come in to the classroom eager to try out their new supplies.

Some schools have systems in place for parents to bring school supplies in ahead of time, but that is not always the case.  But even if parents brought in supplies ahead of time, there is a good chance that students come with more on the first day of school.

If you don't have a plan for these school supplies, then students will come up with their own plan.  And that plan will usually involve half opened bottles of glue and broken crayons stuffed inside their desk, and that copy paper that you so desperately need disappearing.

There are a lot of ways to handle student school supplies - communal supplies, every student keeping their own supplies, a mix of both, sharing with tables, etc.  However you decide to handle supplies in your own classroom, you need a plan in place ahead of time.

When students entered my 3rd grade classroom wondering what to do on the first day of school, I would ask them to find their seat, hang their backpack on the back of their chair, and begin one of these no prep activities (usually the word search, since they could do that independently) with the pencil I had already sharpened for them.

I provided everything they needed so that students didn't need to mess with any of their supplies.  If they had any supplies, they were asked to keep the supplies in their backpack or on the floor next to them.

Once we had time later in the day, I would go over the expectations for school supplies - what supplies they could keep in their desk, what to do with other supplies, how to treat school supplies, what to do if they didn't have any, etc.

Make sure you have a plan in place for school supplies when they first enter the classroom.  A free for all is not a sustainable solution.

Monitoring Comprehension Practice for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade

This is one of my favorite ways to practice comprehension! Students read passages with intentional mistakes that do not make sense based on the context of the passage. Students must read carefully to find the mistakes.

It's fun, engaging, and best of all - no prep! Check out this Monitoring Comprehension Resource here.

Building Community on the First Day of School

Once all of your upper elementary students are in the classroom, you can begin the most important part of your day - beginning to build a positive classroom community.  You want to get to know your students, you want your students to get to know you, you want them to get to know each other, and you want to begin to create a culture of kindness.

Any extra time you have on the first day of school should be devoted to building community!  There are endless ways to do this.

Interview A Friend

All about me activities.

All About Me Activities are a fun way to get to know each other.  And if you complete the activity as well, it gives students a chance to get to know you.

One of my favorites was modeling this All About Me Bag activity , and then assigning it to students as their first "homework" assignment.

These other All About Me Activity Ideas are fun as well.

Partner or Small Group Discussion Questions

Giving students a chance to talk to each other in a low stakes setting is one of the best ways to build community.  Asking one of these fun discussion questions and giving students a chance to talk to the students that are around them will set them more at ease.

This also gives you a chance to explain and practice your different partnering up procedures - an often used procedure in my classroom.

Team Builders and Ice Breakers

Introducing and practicing important routines and procedures.

Beginning to set expectations and practice routines from Day 1 is essential.  If you don't take the time to establish a routine, then 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will create their own.

There will probably not be enough time on the first day of school to practice ALL of the routines and procedures on this free checklist, but you can definitely begin by practicing the ones that will occur daily.  Things like:

  • Entering the Classroom/Morning Routine
  • Sharpening Pencils
  • Going to the Bathroom
  • Walking in the Hallway
  • Using Hand Signals
  • Classroom Jobs
  • Finding a Partner
  • Cleaning Up the Classroom

Most of these procedures will come up naturally during the day, so introduce them and practice them as they come up.  Just make sure you plan for plenty of time to practice before you are expected to be anywhere!

For example, allot around 5-10 minutes to go over bathroom procedures before you plan on taking a bathroom break.

Be sure you have time to practice your lining up procedures and hallway procedures before you have to get your students to lunch or P.E.

And since dismissal is almost always the craziest time of day, make sure you have plenty of time to practice this procedure - you don't want to rush it, and you also don't want students leaving school late!

The first day of school isn't the only time you'll be practicing procedures.  You'll do that over and over again throughout the school year.  These fun ideas to review procedures and routines can keep you and the students from getting bored!

Fitting it All Together - A Practical Schedule

So what does a typical schedule look like for that first day of school?  Since all classrooms have different schedules for things like recess, lunch, school-wide assemblies, and specials, it's hard to say exactly.  But it could go something like this:

  • Greet Students (and tell them what to do with school supplies)
  • Introduce Yourself
  • Team Builder/Ice Breaker Activity to Build Community
  • Procedure Practice (probably lining up, hallway, and bathroom procedures so you can take a bathroom break)
  • Another Team Builder/Ice Breaker Activity to Build Community
  • More Procedure Practice (whatever you need to practice before going to lunch/recess)
  • Lunch/Recess
  • More Procedure Practice (possibly practicing the morning routine so they know what to do when they enter the classroom the next day)
  • Read aloud one of these Back to School Books
  • Another Team Builder/Ice Breaker Activity
  • More Procedure Practice

Between procedure practice and building community, there really isn't much time in the day for anything else!

First Day of School Morning Work

Share This:

We survived the first day of school!! And I’m still standing (barely) and alive to blog about it. (also barely) Nobody cried, nobody got lost, nobody had an accident. I’m in love with my new bunch and all in all, I’m calling day one a smashing success! That said, the first day is still the first day. It’s jam packed from the moment we walk in until the moment we leave. I think the two most hectic times of day on the first day of school are when the kids are first arriving and then again when they’re packing up to leave. I offer no grand insight about the latter…pray!? But the entering part, that I might be able to help you out with. 😉

{Click HERE to snag graph for your class}      When my kids walked in this morning, this is what they found waiting at their tables. The table caddies hold enough crayons for the kids to share and also a handful of sharpened pencils. Also, a cup of pattern blocks and their first morning worksheet. I have all the kids bring their backpacks with them to their desk and help them find their name tags. Then, I quickly go over the directions for this activity, before letting them get busy. My favorite part about this very basic activity is that when they’re done, they can build and create patterns with the blocks. This keeps them happy and busy at their seats while I take attendance, call tables over for breakfast, and bag all the supplies that are about to burst out of their backpacks…

Thanks for sharing the graph!! I am looking for math activities to get them used to using the manipulatives and this is perfect for my pattern block box!!! You rock!!! =)

So glad you had a great first day! Can't wait to hear more! ❤Teri A Cupcake for the Teacher

I love your graphing idea! LOVE IT! Oh my goodness I am SO with you on the supplies. That is the downer of the first day for me. For some reason I always forget how much time it takes- and how much room it takes to store everything. Poor little guys are all weighed down with STUFF- and then seem to throw it up all over the room for me to put away! 🙂 Sounds like your off to a great year! I love your idea and will remember it for next year's first (or second) day. Since I'm a month past that now, I'm going to use this next week for their math journal. Thanks so much!

Politics latest: Lee Anderson's comments that sparked Islamophobia row condemned by PM

Rishi Sunak is under pressure to address the suspension of Lee Anderson from the Tory party after the ex-party deputy chair said he believed "Islamists" had "got control" of Sadiq Khan, the London mayor. The PM is holding a cabinet meeting in Yorkshire and the Humber this morning.

The prime minister has said Lee Anderson's comments about London mayor Sadiq Khan "weren't acceptable, they were wrong".

On Friday, the MP for Ashfield said he believed "Islamists" had "got control" of Sadiq Khan, the London mayor - sparking an Islamophobia row.

Speaking on BBC Radio York, Rishi Sunak denied that the party has "Islamophobic tendencies", and said: "I think it's incumbent on all of us, especially those elected to parliament, not to inflame our debates in a way that's harmful to others."

On Mr Anderson specifically, the PM said: "Lee's comments weren't acceptable, they were wrong. That's why he's had the whip suspended."

Mr Sunak went on to say: "Words matter, especially in the current environment where tensions are running high. I think it's incumbent on all of us to choose them carefully."

The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, is still fighting for his job amid continuing fury over him breaking from precedent last week in a vote about a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

Asked if the Speaker can count on his support, Transport Secretary Mark Harper declined to comment, saying the speakership is "a matter for parliament as a whole" and it's "not for the government to set that out".

He went on: "The Speaker himself has accepted that he made mistakes last week.

"I think it was worrying that he changed the rules of how parliament operates because of concerns for the security of MPs, and Keir Starmer has questions to answer about why he put the speaker under such pressure.

"We should never change how we operate as members of Parliament because of outside threats."

He added that he is "very confident in our security agencies" and they enable MPs to have "robust, frank discussions in parliament".

As we have reported, Lee Anderson MP was suspended from the Tory party after saying he believed "Islamists" had "got control" of Sadiq Khan, the London mayor.

The Ashfield MP was a deputy chair of the Conservative Party until he resigned from the post in order to rebel against the government on the Rwanda legislation.

We asked Transport Secretary Mark Harper if Mr Anderson was the wrong person to be a party deputy chair in the first place, and replied: "He said what he said as a backbencher, and he was wrong to do so. And the whip has been removed."

Opening the door to Mr Anderson's return to the Tory party, the cabinet minister replied: "He's contributed a lot in the past. I'd like to see him be able to contribute to the Conservative Party in the future.

"But what he said was wrong, and he needs to reflect on that going forward."

Mr Harper also rejected the assertion made by Tory peer Sayeeda Warsi yesterday that there is a hierarchy of racism within the party, and anti-Muslim racism is being used as an electoral campaign tool.

He said: "I don't agree with that. And the fact that we took such robust action so quickly against what Lee Anderson said, I think, rather shows exactly why she's wrong."

Next with Transport Secretary Mark Harper, we turned to Lee Anderson having been suspended from the Tory party after saying he believed "Islamists" had "got control" of Sadiq Khan, the London mayor.

The deputy PM refused to say if Mr Anderson's comments were racist when asked by Sky News yesterday, and so presenter Kay Burley asked Mr Harper what the Ashfield MP has done wrong.

The cabinet minister replied: "He said things about Sadiq Khan that weren't true and that were quite wrong to say.

"He was given the opportunity to retract those comments and to apologise for them. He didn't do so, so very clear and decisive leadership was taken and the whip's been removed."

Asked what he has to do to be welcomed back into the party, Mr Harper said he hopes the Ashfield MP will "reflect on what he said" and "retract those comments and apologise".

The minister said there are "many" reasons to criticise the London mayor, but "you don't have to make anything up" about him.

Pushed again on what he has to say to return to the party, Mr Harper refused to comment, saying it's a matter for the chief whip.

Asked if Mr Anderson's comments were racist, he said: "Well it was wrong, and I'm not going to get into arguing about the rights and wrongs of what he said."

He added: "Wrong is a very strong word in my book."

Pushed repeatedly on if Mr Anderson's comments were racist, Mr Harper repeated the same answer three times.

We've just been speaking with Transport Secretary Mark Harper, and we start by asking about the £4.7bn being allocated to improving local transport after the northern leg of HS2 was scrapped (see previous post).

Presenter Kay Burley puts to Mr Harper that £3.5bn was spent on the Jubilee London Underground line, so "the maths doesn't really add up".

The transport secretary replied that "it does" add up, saying that "every penny" of scrapped HS2 funding is going into local transport, as promised.

He said the North and the Midlands will see the most money, as ministers promised the HS2 money would be spent where it would have been spent had the high-speed rail line not been scrapped.

The spending will be "transformational" over the next seven years, and the money is "way more money than these councils have ever had before".

Any money being spent on the south, he said, is coming out of the budget that would have been spent on Euston station in London - where the HS2 line would have ended before Rishi Sunak scrapped it.

"This is money going to the smaller cities and towns and rural areas across the North and the Midlands that have never had this sort of transport spending before."

The prime minister has revealed how some of the money from abandoning the HS2 northern leg will be reallocated.

Northern England will get £2.5bn and the Midlands £2.2bn after plans to run the high-speed line to the North were scrapped last year.

The cash will go to a "local transport fund" to help towns, rural areas and smaller cities.

Councils and local authorities will decide how to spend the money, the government said. For example using it to mend potholes, build roads, improve mass transit or renovate bus stations.

The announcement comes as Rishi Sunak holds a cabinet meeting in northern England on Monday - the location being kept secret for security reasons.

October's decision not to build HS2 past the Midlands was criticised by those who said it made a mockery of 'levelling-up' and 'Northern Powerhouse' pledges.

Three female MPs have been given bodyguards and chauffeur-driven cars amid growing concern about politicians' safety.

It comes after a risk assessment by an organisation that helps protect the Royal Family and the prime minister.

RAVEC (the Royal and VIP Executive Committee) conducted the review after a recent increase in the threat level faced by MPs.

There are fears politicians could be targeted by extremists because of the Israel-Hamas war.

Private security staff and other measures, such as panic alarms, are in place at constituency surgeries and homes of other MPs believed to be at risk.

The three female MPs given bodyguard protection include both Tory and Labour members.

MPs are set to hold another debate on a ceasefire in Gaza after the SNP said it would take up the Speaker's offer following last week's chaotic scenes in parliament.

It comes after Sir Lindsay Hoyle faced a backlash last week for breaching convention by allowing a vote on a Labour amendment to an SNP opposition motion calling for an immediate halt to the fighting.

His move was interpreted by critics as an "overtly political decision" designed to help Sir Keir Starmer fend off a rebellion from his own backbenchers, and there were angry scenes as both SNP and Conservative MPs stormed out of the Commons chamber in protest.

Sir Lindsay denied the claims and insisted the safety of MPs was the main reason for his move.

But he apologised twice and offered to grant an emergency debate on a fresh ceasefire motion in acknowledgement that MPs never got a chance to vote on the SNP's amendment amid the chaos.

By Matthew Thompson, political correspondent

Another week, another row about racism in one of the two main Westminster parties.

Following incendiary comments about Muslims from both Suella Braverman and Lee Anderson, Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden was sent out yesterday morning to dampen the flames .

Except that, by being less than full-throated in his condemnation, he managed to fan them still further.

Although even without that unhelpful intervention, the Conservative Party was on the back foot.

Yes, Lee Anderson had been suspended . But not, it appeared, because his comments themselves were beyond the pale. Rather, it was because he had failed to apologise.

The implication being that had he said sorry, all would have been forgiven.

It's a remarkably similar situation to Labour's recent troubles over their candidate in Rochdale.

Read the full analysis here:

Tory MPs have complained that suspending Lee Anderson may have been a mistake, WhatsApp messages leaked to Sky News have revealed.

After one of the most toxic weeks in Westminster, the Sky News and Politico podcast, Politics at Jack and Sam's , examines the attitude of all sides to the controversies of the last few days.

The future of Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker, remains in the balance - the podcast explains - while both Labour and Tory MPs have got increasingly trenchant in their views ahead of a by-election in Rochdale this Friday which could see George Galloway elected.

Rishi Sunak suspended Mr Anderson on Saturday after the former Tory deputy chair failed to apologise for telling GB News that the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, had "given our capital city away to his mates".

Simon Hart, the Tory chief whip, suspended him the next day.

As part of this, the podcast exclusively obtained WhatsApp messages in which Tory MPs complain that the suspension of the high-profile Tory MP is the "final nail in the coffin" and will harm support.

Clearview vs. elyria catholic girls basketball: panthers roll in first-round matchup.

Elyria Catholic's Isabelle Niederst and Clearview's Mo'Faith Tillman compete for a first quarter rebound on Feb. 21. (Randy Meyers - For The Morning Journal)

Elyria Catholic couldn’t have asked for a better start to its Division II playoff run.

The 13th-seeded Panthers got up early and everyone contributed in a 78-20 first-round victory over (53) Clearview on Feb. 21.

They advance to a sectional final on Feb. 24, when they will host (36) Orange.

“These girls work every day at practice, so it’s good to see them out there and getting playing time,” Elyria Catholic coach Eric Rothgery said. “There were two starters out today, so one started for the first time ever. Just win and move on, that’s what tournament time is all about.”

EC (16-7) was already without Lexi Rodriguez, and Nevaeh Sawyer also wasn’t available for this game. The Panthers didn’t let that affect them as they forced 16 turnovers in the first quarter and led by 25 after the opening eight minutes. All 13 Panthers scored and played solid minutes.

Elyria Catholic continuously got hands in driving and passing lanes, resulting in easy layups on the other end. The half-court offense featured plenty of ball moment as the girls executed no matter who was in the game.

"The players that don't usually play, it's super exciting to go out there and see that everybody scored tonight. That's great," Elyria Catholic senior Isabelle Niederst said. "Our team really likes to share the ball with each other, even the JV players that we brought up for tournament time were able to get out there and score baskets. It's really exciting to see."

Niederst didn't play in the second half, but it didn't stop her from scoring a game-high 14 points. Camara Ogletree also finished with 11 points in the first half. Juliana Cerny played throughout and finished with 12. Seven players scored multiple baskets.

This was the second-to-last home game for the Panthers' seniors. This weekend's game against Orange will be their final game in the Coliseum. As she was able to watch her teammates continue to play well in the second half, Niederst had a lot of time to reflect. She's trying to soak it all in during this playoff run.

"It was a really exciting game just for all of us to be able to be out here and play together in one of my last games with my team," Niederst said. "It's really special to have our first two tournament games here, so I'm really grateful for that."

On the flip side, it was a tough one for Coach Nick Dimacchia and his crew. The Clippers finished with a 5-17 record, but they also finished it by playing hard to the final whistle.

Annie Green led Clearview with eight points, followed by six from Nevaeh Berrios and five from Adrianna Comley.

"This has been the story all year. We play hard, we're just undersized and outmatched," Dimacchia said. "I have kids that play hard, but it's challenging when we can't match up. Obviously (Elyria Catholic) has a history of being a great girls basketball program. When you come into the Coliseum, you know what you're getting. I thought my kids did the best that they could."

Welcome to ‘Supersex’: Why Porn Icon Rocco Siffredi Brought His True Story and More Than 40 ‘Boundary-Pushing’ Sex Scenes to Netflix

Porn icon Rocco Siffredi claims that after making roughly 1,400 hardcore films — with titles like “The Ass Collector” and “Rocco’s Perfect Slaves” — over the past four decades, he has finally found “the peace of his senses.”

“I could crack a bad joke and say I can’t get it up anymore,” says Siffredi, 59, speaking on a video call from the Budapest office of his Rocco Siffredi Production company, which houses the Siffredi Hard Academy, touted as the world’s first “university of porn.”

“I have to tell you that it was a mix of problems connected with my personal life and the dependency that this job, for better or worse, sets forth in you when you’re on set 28 days every month doing two or three scenes a day,” Siffredi says. “I don’t know if it was dependency or just desire. But I swear, it’s over.”

That said, he’s still happy to shoot other actors and create porn. “But I don’t feel the need to do it myself.”

“ Supersex ,” the Netflix series inspired by Siffredi’s life that drops globally on March 6 after premiering at the Berlin Film Festival in February, begins with Rocco announcing, “Porn for me is over. I’m retiring,” at a 2004 Paris porn industry convention. That really happened. But in a fictional twist written by the show’s creator, Francesca Manieri, Rocco, played by Italian star Alessandro Borghi, then proceeds to have rough sex in front of a throng of cheering journalists and fans, having been enticed by one of the convention’s hostesses, an aspiring porn performer who is seeking her big break.

Manieri, who is a militant feminist, says that when she was approached by producer Lorenzo Mieli about doing a Rocco Siffredi origins show on the set of Luca Guadagnino’s gay coming-of-age TV series “We Are Who We Are” — which she co-wrote — she thought Mieli was joking. He asked her to give it some serious thought.

Everyone told her it was “too risky,” but Manieri came on board because she saw it as a unique opportunity.

“I said to myself that if when women are given the chance to delve into the heart of masculinity — with all its dysfunctionality and potential toxicity, or even its power —we turn it down, then we can’t blame anyone anymore,” she says.

“That evening was like my high school and college graduation crammed into one,” says Siffredi — who is named after Alain Delon’s gangster character Roch Siffredi in the 1970 French film “Borsalino.” “When I saw Gabriel in that club, I knew that in front of me I had the opportunity that I had been seeking ever since I was a kid. The emotion I felt is indescribable.”

“Supersex” traces Siffredi’s journey from Ortona to Paris, Rome and then Los Angeles, where he started working with U.S. porn pioneer John Leslie and producer John Stagliano. It delves into Rocco’s close relationships with his mom and older brother Tommaso (Adriano Giannini) and with Tommaso’s partner Lucia, played by Jasmine Trinca, a Berlin juror. Lucia becomes a prostitute and is a “mirror for Rocco.” “They are both sex workers,” Manieri says. “But the social judgment cast upon them is completely different.” Lucia eventually manages to find redemption, though not entirely, “because our society does not allow that strong a twist.” But her character provides a “bridge between the feminine and masculine [realms].”

In terms of genre, Manieri calls “Supersex” a hybrid between a melodrama and a coming-of-age story. As references she cites Luchino Visconti’s neo-realist classic “Rocco and His Brothers” and Sergio Leone’s epic “Once Upon a Time in America,” classics that feature respectively a feminicide and a rape, she points out. These films depict “the dynamics of how a masculine psyche is built,” she says. Similarly, the series deconstructs “the boundaries of that type of toxic masculinity.”

Both Siffredi and Manieri say there is a lot more of Rocco’s real journey in “Supersex” than a show “just inspired by my life,” as Siffredi puts it. “Stories are built on conflict,” says Manieri. “Rocco and I in a room were the biggest conflict you could possibly imagine, so it was a great start.”

For Borghi — known to U.S. art-house audiences for playing Bruno, the Alpine native who has a meltdown in male-bonding drama “The Eight Mountains” — “Francesca’s screenplay is probably the reason I chose to make this series.” What interested him about the story of an 8-year-old kid from a dirt-poor family in Ortona who becomes the world’s biggest porn star is that it’s “so filled with emotional changes that have to do with dependency and pain and things connected with his family — this whole dark side,” he says.

“If they had written a series about a porn actor just to show how good he was at fucking, surely I would not have accepted,” he adds.

Borghi says he has roughly 40 or 50 “boundary-pushing” sex scenes in the show, some more intense than others. But what’s crucial for him is “that every scene that has to do with sex, with porn, always involves a new narrative twist for the character,” he points out. “It’s never because at that point in the narrative you needed to throw in some sex for the audience.” Instead, the steamy scenes “can be Rocco’s consecration, his happiness, or the way he faces pain.”

To play these scenes with several actresses— including Gaia Messerklinger, who plays Italian porn star Moana Pozzi, and Jade Pedri and Linda Caridi as women with whom Rocco becomes romantically involved — directors Matteo Rovere, Francesco Carrozzini and Francesca Mazzoleni had an intimacy coordinator on set in Rome, Sicily and Paris.

“We did lots of different things,” says Borghi, who describes the mood instilled on set by intimacy coordinator Luisa Lazzaro.

“It was funny because the first couple of weeks we were all a little uneasy,” he says, “and then the third week we just stood there naked looking at scenes on the monitor. So something must have worked.”

There is little doubt that of the many women in Rocco Siffredi’s life, the most important one is his mom, Carmela.

“My whole journey [into the porn world] starts with that woman and her suffering, my desire to suffer the way she did,” he says wistfully. “It was always very important for me to find redemption in order to help my mother, even financially.”

“She’s the biggest luck of my life,” he continues. “A mom who doesn’t judge you for your choice, doesn’t try to oppose it or create problems.” On the contrary: “It’s not that she pushed me. But she had that protective attitude that says: ‘Rocco, if it makes you happy, go for it!’”

Going for it took Siffredi from Ortona to Los Angeles in 1990. It was very tough, he recalls, due to his Italian accent and “because Americans are used to selling, not to buying,” as he puts it.

“Rocco, this guy from Italy. I’m the first European to disembark in America and I changed porn,” Siffredi boasts, referring to his signature brand of rough on-screen sex, not to mention his supersized cock, which has won him 150 porn industry prizes.

So is there a moral to “Supersex”? Can it help teenagers grasp the distinction between porn and real sex? “This series can help Rocco fans understand better who Rocco is — his life, where he comes from,” says Siffredi.

But it should also help viewers understand what it takes to become a porn star. “Guys arrive at my academy and they think they are going to find 10 women with their legs spread open, ready to do what they want,” Siffredi points out. But it’s not like that.

According to Siffredi, “Porn is a very tough job; it’s a vocation. I always say to the guys, ‘If you want to do this because you are unemployed and you need to make money, it’s not going to work. Because working with sex is the worse thing you can do in your life.’”
