MDA, SDA Announce Upcoming Launch of the Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor and Tranche 0 Satellites

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and Space Development Agency (SDA) announce the upcoming launch of six satellites into low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida.

Today's planned launch will include two satellites for MDA's Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) and the final four SDA Tranche 0 (T0) Tracking Layer satellites of its Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA). As part of the National Security Space Launch program, SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket will deliver the satellites to orbit.

"This launch represents a pivotal time for MDA as we enter a new phase of missile warning, tracking and defense," said Lt. Gen. Heath Collins, director of MDA. "These HBTSS satellites are an essential step forward in our efforts to stay ahead of our adversaries."

MDA, the U.S. Space Force and SDA are collaborating to develop HBTSS as a space sensor prototype demonstration providing fire control quality data required to defeat advanced missile threats. Ultimately, this data is critical to enabling engagement by missile defense weapons, including engagement of hypersonic glide-phase weapons. This "birth-to-death" tracking by HBTSS will make it possible to maintain custody of missile threats from launch through intercept regardless of location.

"Launching our Tracking satellites into the same orbit with the MDA HBTSS satellites is a win for both agencies," said Derek Tournear, director of SDA. "We'll be able to look at test targets from the same orbit at the same time, so that we can see how the two sensors work together. In Tranche 1, SDA will fly both sensor types as an operational system – medium-field-of-view demonstrating fire control, based on HBTSS design, and wide-field-of-view doing warning and tracking, based on T0 tracking design."

A rocket sits on a metal platform.

Operationally, the missile defense capability, developed through MDA's HBTSS demonstration program, will inform SDA's PWSA and will detect hypersonic, ballistic, and other advanced threats earlier than terrestrial radars, providing hypersonic threat tracking data for hand off through linked missile defense weapons. SDA will build upon the fire-control capability successes learned from HBTSS and proliferate those fully developed capabilities in the spiral approach to future tranches.

SDA, part of the U.S. Space Force, previously deployed 23 Tranche 0 satellites on-orbit in 2023, including Transport and Tracking Layer satellites, from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. The four Tracking Layer satellites that will launch with MDA's HBTSS were delivered by L3Harris Technologies and represent the final satellites in the Tranche 0 program bringing the on-orbit constellation to 27.

MDA initiated the HBTSS program in 2018. In January 2021 MDA awarded Other Transaction Agreements to L3Harris Technologies Inc. and Northrop Grumman Corporation.

The pending launch of the two prototype systems will be followed by two years of on-orbit testing. Over the next few weeks, MDA and SDA engineers will run a series of tests and checkout procedures to ensure the satellites are operating and integrating with the Missile Defense System and other mission areas.

A follow-up MDA announcement to verify launch outcome will be released as soon as possible. Photographs and video will also be made available.

Double-launch recap: SpaceX USSF-124, Intuitive Machines moon lander lift off from Cape

hw space 2021

Launch recap : Scroll down for live coverage of the Feb. 14-15 back-to-back liftoffs of two SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets — USSF-124 and Intuitive Machines IM-1 — from Cape Canaveral.

Welcome to FLORIDA TODAY's Space Team live coverage of this evening's launch doubleheader — with two SpaceX Falcon 9 rockets scheduled to lift off from the Cape within a roughly 7½-hour span!

At 1:05 a.m. EST Thursday, SpaceX will try again to launch Odysseus, Intuitive Machines' first Nova-C lunar lander, from Kennedy Space Center on the IM-1 mission to attempt to reach the moon's surface eight days after liftoff.

Earlier, SpaceX launched the Space Force's classified USSF-124 mission at 5:30 p.m. from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. That Falcon 9 sent two satellites for the Missile Defense Agency and four satellites for the Space Development Agency into orbit, according to a Space Force press release.

The Intuitive Machines mission was initially scheduled to lift off this morning at 12:57 a.m. , but SpaceX scrubbed the launch "due to off-nominal methane temperatures prior to stepping into methane load." The Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron predicts 90% "go for launch" meteorological conditions for this upcoming second attempt.

Expect sonic booms. Following stage separation, the Falcon 9 first-stage booster will target landing at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

The booster will target a landing 8 minutes, 1 second after launch.

Falcon 9s to log 11th national security flight

Update 4:25 p.m.: Space Force officials have released scant details about the secretive USSF-124 mission.

In a press release this morning, they reported this marks the 11th national security launch supported by a SpaceX Falcon 9. In terms of pacing, this marks the eighth since December 2018.

“With each national security launch, we continue to strengthen America’s capabilities and its deterrence in the face of growing threats while adding stability to a very dynamic world. It’s what we do in the Space Force, and we take that charge seriously," Col. Jim Horne, senior materiel leader for Space System Command’s Launch Execution Delta, said in the press release.

Space Force: 95+% 'go for launch' weather

Update 4:09 p.m.: More details from the Space Force's 45th Weather Squadron forecast for the USSF-124 launch, which noted an influx of cool, dry air.

"An area of high pressure will slide in from the west as the day progresses (Tuesday into Wednesday), shifting low level winds from the west to the north. The high will be centered just to the north of the Spaceport by (Wednesday) afternoon, bringing very favorable weather for the primary launch window," the forecast said.

"The only concern is the negligible risk of a Thick Cloud Layers Rule due to the upper level jet stream situated over northern Florida," the forecast said.

Before Russia’s satellite threat, there were Starfish Prime, nesting dolls and robotic arms

WASHINGTON (AP) — What would it mean if Russia used nuclear warheads to destroy U.S. satellites? Your home’s electrical and water systems could fail. Aviation, rail and car traffic could come to a halt. Your cellphone could stop working.

These are among the reasons why there was alarm this week over reports that Russia may be pursuing nuclear weapons in space.

The White House has said the danger isn’t imminent . But reports of the new anti-satellite weapon build on longstanding worries about space threats from Russia and China. So much of the country’s infrastructure is now dependent on U.S. satellite communications — and those satellites have become increasingly vulnerable.

It would also not be the first time a nuclear warhead has been detonated in space, or the only capability China and Russia are pursuing to disable or destroy a U.S. satellite.

A woman places flowers as people pay tribute to Alexei Navalny at the Memorial to Victims of Political Repression in St. Petersburg, Russia, Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024. Russians across the vast country streamed to ad-hoc memorials with flowers and candles to pay tribute to Alexei Navalny, the most famous Russian opposition leader and the Kremlin's fiercest critic. Russian officials reported that Navalny, 47, died in prison on Friday. (AP Photo/Dmitri Lovetsky)

Here’s a look at what’s happened in the past, why Russia may be pursuing a nuclear weapon for space now, and what the U.S. is doing about all the space threats it faces.

THE PAST: STARFISH PRIME AND PROJECT K

Both Russia and the U.S. have detonated nuclear warheads in space. In the 1960s, little was known about how the relatively new weapons of mass destruction would act in the Earth’s atmosphere. Both countries experimented to find out. The Soviet tests were called Project K and took place from 1961 to 1962. The U.S. conducted 11 tests of its own, and the largest, and first successful, test was known as Starfish Prime, said Stephen Schwartz, a non-resident senior fellow at the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.

Starfish Prime launched in July 1962, when the U.S. sent up a 1.4-megaton thermonuclear warhead on a Thor missile and detonated it about 250 miles (400 kilometers) above the Earth.

The missile was launched about 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) from Hawaii but the effects from the tests were seen around the equator.

“The large amount of enerqy released at such a high altitude by the detonation caused widespread auroras throughout the Pacific,” according to a 1982 Department of Defense report on the tests.

The blast disabled several satellites, including a British one named Ariel, as radioactive particles from the burst came in contact with them. Radio systems and the electrical grid on Hawaii were temporarily knocked out, said Hans Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists. The debris left satellites in its path malfunctioning “along the lines of the old Saturday matinee one-reeler,” the 1982 report said.

When the former Soviet Union conducted its own test as part of Project K, it did so at a slightly lower orbit and “fried systems on the ground, including underground cables and a power plant,” Kristensen said.

The U.S. and the Soviet Union signed a nuclear test ban treaty a year later, in 1963, which prohibited further testing of nuclear weapons in space.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby declined to say Thursday whether the emerging Russian weapon is nuclear capable, noting only that it would violate an international treaty that prohibits the deployment of “nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction” in orbit.

SATELLITE ATTACKS TODAY

It’s the ability to do that kind of damage that makes it logical that the Russians would want to put a warhead in space, especially if they see their military and economy weakened after fighting a U.S.-backed Ukraine for the past two years, said John Ferrari, a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.

A space-based weapon that could cripple U.S. communications and the U.S. economy could be an intimidating equalizer, and would just be the latest development from both Russia’s and China’s efforts to weaponize space, he said.

In the past few years China has tested a satellite with a robotic arm that can maneuver to a system, grab it, and move it out of orbit.

Russia has developed a “nesting doll” satellite that opens up to reveal a smaller satellite, and then that one opens to reveal a projectile capable of destroying nearby satellites. In 2019, the Russians maneuvered a nesting doll near a U.S. satellite.

When one of those nesting doll systems “parks next to one of our high-value NRO capabilities, they are now holding that asset at risk,” the deputy chief of space operations of the U.S. Space Force, Lt. Gen. DeAnna Burt, said at a 2022 space conference. NRO is the National Reconnaissance Office.

Russia also generated headlines around the world when it conducted a more traditional anti-satellite test in 2021, where it shot down one of its own systems. As with the Starfish test, the impact created a large cloud of orbiting debris that even put the International Space Station at risk for awhile.

THE NEW SPACE FORCE

The quickly evolving threat in space was one of the main drivers behind establishing the U.S. Space Force, Pentagon spokesman Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder said at a briefing Thursday. In the years since its 2019 creation, the service has focused on developing a curriculum to train its service members, called Guardians, on detecting threats from space and wargaming scenarios on what conflict in space would look like.

The creation of the Space Force elevated spending on satellite systems and defenses. Previously, when space needs were spread among the military services, spending on a new satellite would have to compete for funding with ships or fighter jets — and the services had a more immediate need for the aircraft and vessels, Ferrari said.

But there’s more work to be done, and the revelation that Russia may be pursuing a nuclear weapon for space raises critical questions for Congress and the Defense Department, Ferrari said. If Russia uses a nuclear weapon to take out satellites and that cripples the U.S. economy, does that justify the U.S. bombing Russian cities in return?

“How do you respond to that? You have no good option,” Ferrari said. “So now it’s a question of, ‘What is the deterrence theory for this?’ ”

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. could her success help other black women.

The cover photo from "Texas Hold 'Em," one of two new country singles by Beyoncé that debuted during Super Bowl LVIII.

When an employee of the KYKC, a country music radio station based in a small Southern Oklahoma town, hit send on an email earlier this week responding to a listener's request to hear a new song, they probably didn't expect to make national headlines. The employee later claimed they had not watched the second half of the Super Bowl and were not aware that one of the world's biggest pop stars had released a new single that opens with a banjo riff when they sent the reply. But soon, that disappointed listener was posting a screenshot of the email response, which read: "Hi — we do not play Beyoncé on KYKC as we are a country music station."

A radio station is now playing Beyoncé's country song after an outcry from fans

A radio station is now playing Beyoncé's country song after an outcry from fans

The response set off a rapid chain of events: Beyoncé fans who had seen the screenshot wrote or called KYKC to request the song in droves. Within a few hours, the station was playing the song, "Texas Hold 'Em," on its air. Beyoncé's team serviced the single widely to country radio, and by the end of the week it had become the singer's first single to appear on Billboard 's country airplay chart, having gotten spins on 100 stations nationwide.

But that initial exchange reignited long-running conversations about racism in country music, and the backlash solidified a complaint against country radio stations in particular: that they act as gatekeepers of a stereotype that the genre is limited to white artists. That complaint has proven valid and meaningful. And the efforts of Beyoncé's fans to challenge that perception offers the chance to demystify the crucial role that format plays in the careers of musicians chasing commercial success. Country radio continues to be the most effective way to obtain listeners for artists working in the genre. Success within the format also determines eligibility for Country Music Association (CMA) awards. In short, it's both the surest pathway to legitimacy in a tight-knit industry as well as a source of financial benefit.

As much as Beyoncé's challenge to the machinery of country music throws a light on the problem Black artists and women face getting played on country radio, the attention also creates a paradox. Her megastardom and the efforts of her huge, vocal fanbase obscure the presence of countless more Black artists of the past and present who have pushed to gain acceptance within country music and mostly been frustrated in that pursuit, despite the fact — as the rollout of Beyoncé's upcoming album, initiated during the Super Bowl, has alluded to — that the genre has always taken from Black music and culture.

Research has confirmed a stark racial and gender divide. In one study of over 11,000 songs played on country radio from 2002 to 2020, Jada Watson, an Assistant Professor in the School of Information Studies at the University of Ottawa and the Principal Investigator of SongData, found that artists of color represented just 3% of country airplay, two-thirds of which were by solo male artists.

The overwhelming whiteness of artists played on country radio is indicative of how the popular music industry remains one of the most outwardly racially segregated spaces in American culture. Not only is this segregation commonplace, it is actively encouraged as business practice and has only strengthened over time.

Over the past half century, the rise of format radio has played a key role in maintaining racial segregation in the ways popular music is recorded, marketed and sold. While the vast majority of country radio stations did not play Beyoncé's new singles (in addition to "Texas Hold 'Em," she also released " 16 Carriages ," on Super Bowl Sunday) upon their release, this practice also reflects the fact that the singer's promotional team did not initially service the singles to country radio either. Because Beyoncé has always been classified as a pop and R&B artist, it should not come as a surprise that her team did not immediately promote the singles to country formats.

Country music as a genre ≠ the format of country radio

As Amy Coddington, an Assistant Professor of Music at Amherst College and the author of the book How Hip Hop Became Hit Pop: Radio, Rap, and Race , explains, "Radio isn't music, radio uses music. The whole point of playing music is to cultivate a certain demographic." In other words, radio formats have primarily not been defined by sonic boundaries, but by specific audiences that the stations (and their advertisers) want to target. Country format radio stations have almost never thought of their listeners, or the artists they use to obtain those listeners, as anything but white.

Despite the genre's multiracial roots , country music has always been marketed with only a white audience in mind. When it was first invented as a marketing category in the 1920s, it was sold as hillbilly and old-time music and was associated with a white, rural and Southern audience. This category was established alongside the creation of "race records," which was designated for Black artists and consumers.

The artificial separation of these categories did not reflect how musicians and fans enjoyed music in practice. Instead, it was a testament to the era of Jim Crow segregation that dictated life in the early-20th-century South. Music executives did not permit Black artists to record songs that they identified as hillbilly or old time, which whitewashed the presence of Black fiddlers and banjo players, even in spite of the latter instrument's African roots. (More recently, musicians like Rhiannon Giddens — who is featured on "Texas Hold 'Em" — and Dom Flemons have worked to reclaim this history.)

By the 1950s, format-based radio emerged as a new marketing technique to attract specific listening audiences. One of the earliest formats established was the Top 40 station, which evolved alongside the growth of rock and roll and a growing teenage demographic that was the format's target. Another new format was the easy listening station, which played middle-of-the-road pop music that was intended to reach an adult, middle-class (and implicitly white) audience. R&B stations were intended for a Black audience. The benefit of crafting specific targeted audiences was that stations understood that if they reliably played a certain type of music, they could reach a particular demographic interested in that music. In turn, those listeners proved valuable to advertisers drawn to the thought of playing commercials for an audience specifically targeted to what was being sold. Ad revenue kept stations in business and playing music.

The perception of country music as a genre associated with a poor, rural and southern demographic meant that the country radio format faced unique challenges during this new era. When the Country Music Association was founded in 1958 as a trade organization for members of the country music business, its primary goal was producing market research that showed country listeners were in fact middle-class (and implicitly white) and as such could be presented as attractive to advertisers who would in turn fund the creation of more country radio stations.

One of the earliest boosts to the country radio format did not come from the CMA, but an album that was not even played on the format. When Ray Charles released Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music in 1962, its success brought a new level of legitimacy to country music. Hugh Cherry , an influential country radio deejay from the 1940s to 1970s, later reflected that the album was "one of the great boons to country music," adding that it "took country music to an audience who had never been presented with it." Still, Modern Sounds failed to be identified as a country album because Charles was Black. Instead, it was played on pop, R&B and easy listening formats. It was not until 2021 that the CMA formally recognized Charles's contribution to country music and its members voted to induct him into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Joining forces, carving out space of their own

Modern Sounds may be the closest historical precedent to the current moment, when another Black star outside of the industry is bringing country music into mainstream conversations in new ways. (Other exceptions include Tina Turner's 1974 Grammy-nominated album Tina Turns the Country On! and The Pointer Sisters's Grammy-winning song from the same year, "Fairytale.") But unlike Charles, Beyoncé is now receiving airplay on at least some country radio stations, and opening possible new avenues of acceptance for Black artists in country music.

But for all the discourse surrounding Beyoncé's reception on country radio, it is important to remember that as one of the biggest celebrities in the world, she will continue to have a successful career no matter how the country music industry receives her. The same cannot be guaranteed for the many Black country artists of the past and present who have fought for recognition in the genre.

When Cleve Francis — the only Black artist signed to a major country record deal in the early 1990s — was dropped by Liberty Records in 1995, he cited a lack of radio airplay among reasons he didn't succeed in the genre. Later that year he established the Black Country Music Association (BCMA) to create community and opportunity for Black country artists, and to educate the public on the history of Black country music.

Frankie Staton , who first came to Nashville to pursue a music career in the early 1980s and who oversaw the BCMA in its early years, says Beyoncé's inclusion on country radio represents a hopeful moment: "For Black Country Artists of the past, it validates our efforts. For present artists, hopefully, it will open doors...for the future artists, it will stop the inquisitions into why they are playing country music, and [claims of] 'I don't know of any Black Country Singers,' for the world knows who Beyoncé is."

How Black women reclaimed country and Americana music in 2021

Best Music Of 2021

How black women reclaimed country and americana music in 2021.

A generation after the BMCA was created, Black country artists and fans who are working in the genre every day continue to push for recognition and sustainable careers, even if it means building new platforms to do so. In 2020 singer Rissi Palmer created the radio show "Color Me Country" to promote the music of Black, Latinx and indigenous country artists. The show is named for the 1970 album by Linda Martell, the first Black woman to earn a hit on the country music charts. Martell's granddaughter, Quia Thompson, is working on a documentary about her grandmother. In 2021, a country music fan named Holly G founded the Black Opry for Black country artists and fans. Since then the organization has blossomed to create a record label, Black Opry Records.

It remains to be seen whether Beyoncé's presence on country radio will make the format more open to playing artists of color in the future. So far, there is not indication the singles have challenged the system and its goal of targeting affluent white listeners. As one country radio programmer recently told Variety , "The core country audience is still that 35-to-45-year-old soccer mom, and they don't just listen to country, they listen to pop, where Beyoncé has a huge impact. So why wouldn't it work?"

Whether or not this moment changes future programming at country radio, it is clear Beyoncé's foray into country music has helped shed light on the presence of Black country artists. Artists like Tanner Adell, whose song " Buckle Bunny " includes the lyric, "looking like Beyoncé with a lasso," have noted the profile boost "Texas Hold 'Em" has given them, revealing the strong demand for Black country artists and a growing community of Black country fans who will continue to build and broaden long legacies of Black country music.

Zendaya's robot outfit at the 'Dune: Part Two' world premiere has divided the internet

  • Zendaya wore a silver suit of armor to the "Dune: Part Two" world premiere on Thursday.
  • Law Roach styled the actor's robot look, but it was originally created by Thierry Mugler in 1995.
  • Zendaya's futuristic outfit divided the internet. Some praised it while others poked fun with memes.

Insider Today

Zendaya wore a silver suit of armor for the “ Dune: Part Two ” world premiere in London on Thursday night, dividing the internet on whether it was stunning or laughable.

The suit was originally created by the designer Thierry Mugler in 1995 for his Fall Haute Couture collection and consists of curved silver plates with see-through panels.

Vogue described it at the time as “a frightening and tantalizing image for the dawn of the Internet age.”

It’s a fitting choice by Zendaya's stylist, Law Roach , that matches Denis Villeneuve’s brutalist vision of galactic warfare in the “Dune” movies.

But when photos surfaced of Zendaya walking the sandy carpet in the outfit, the internet’s reactions ranged from high praise to a tidal wave of memes.

Zendaya was announced as a 2024 Met Gala co-chair today, and she is reminding us why! Some compared the look to characters from other science-fiction franchises, such as "Star Wars" and "Doctor Who," as well as the groundbreaking 1927 silent movie "Metropolis."

Some of the jokes were also aimed at the film's lead, Timothée Chalamet , who wore an oversize T-shirt to the premiere. Many criticized him considering the effort that Zendaya went to with her silver suit.

"Dune: Part Two" is the sequel to 2021's " Dune ," which sees Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) move to the planet Arrakis to control the sandy world that produces a substance vital for space travel. But he becomes a revolutionary when his family is overthrown by their rivals, the Harkonnens.

The first film was met with critical acclaim, winning six awards at the 2022 Oscars , as well as raking in more than $400 million at the box office .

"Dune: Part Two" arrives in theaters on March 1.

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems

However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of  such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds.  Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
