How to Customize Your Ringtone
Having your own custom ringtone makes your phone more personal and helps you hear your phone ring in a crowded room. Creating your own custom ringtone is fairly easy.
Customizing Your Ringtone for an iPhone With a Mac
Unfortunately, iOS doesn’t let you use MP3 tracks as ringtones, so you need to create a new file in the right format to get a custom ringtone on an iPhone. Luckily, this isn’t that much work. In the GarageBand audio editing software that comes on MacOS, create a new iPhone Ringtone project. Select the option to create loops, open the media browser and drag and drop a song into the project. Listen to the song you chose and select a clip of up to 40 seconds to use as your ringtone. Set the parameters of the Cycle Region to trim the clip and create an audio loop. Click on the “Share” menu and choose the option to send the ringtone to iTunes. Sync your iTunes account with your iOS device or your iCloud account to access the ringtone on your phone.
Customizing Your Ringtone for an iPhone in Windows
Windows doesn’t give you access to GarageBand, so you’ll have to use different software if you’re a Windows computer user. Look for a ringtone-making software program that can save files as M4A files. As is the case with GarageBand, you can create a new ringtone by dragging and dropping a song into the software and choosing a timeframe to edit into a loop. Save the file as an iPhone ringtone or M4A file and then drag and drop it into iTunes. Sync your account and add the ringtone to your phone.
Using an MP3 Ringtone on an Android Phone
Setting a custom ringtone in Android is easy because the operating system lets you use MP3 ringtones. Just go into the Settings app and tap the “Sounds” option. Go into the ringtones menu and select the option to add a ringtone. Choose a media or file manager app to view the MP3 files you have stored there. Scroll through the list, choose a song and tap it to set it as your ringtone.
Editing an MP3 File to Create a Loop
If you want to use a clip from a song as your ringtone instead of the intro, you can easily create a small clip or loop in an audio-editing software program. Open the software of your choice, create a new project and drag and drop the song into a new track. Split the track at the appropriate time markers and delete the other parts of the song. Export the track as an MP3 file.
How to Record Your Own Ringtone
If you want to create a truly custom ringtone, you can record your own. Recording lets you save your name as a ringtone or create unique ringtones for each of your friends. To do this, open the audio-editing software program of your choice and create a new project. Set up a new audio track, connect a microphone to your computer and set the track to record audio from that microphone. If you don’t have a microphone, you can also use the built-in microphone on your computer. Press the record button to record audio. Export the track in the file format of your choice.

Screen Rant
How to set custom ringtones for specific contacts on iphone.
With a bit of setup, the iPhone can play a different ringtone and vibrate with a unique haptic pattern for each caller in the user's contact list.
An iPhone can make a different sound and buzz uniquely for each person in a user's contact list, a nice feature that Apple added in iOS 12. Unfortunately, while this option has been around for a while, it isn't easy to discover how to set it up. The controls are somewhat buried. However, once they are found, they're easy to use and can make it possible to identify callers instantly.
The iPhone is such a powerful tool for photography, video recording, internet browsing, and more that it's easy to forget its original purpose is to make and receive telephone calls. But, of course, a smartphone goes beyond what's possible with an old-fashioned landline since it's also a computer. Answering a cellular call on a Mac computer, an iPad, or an Apple Watch is pretty amazing, but the iPhone's tricks don't stop there. For example, visual voicemail transcribes and makes voice messages readable, and 'Respond with a Text' allows quick replies with just a tap.

One of the most important things to know when a call comes in is who it is, and it's convenient to find that out before answering. Caller ID doesn't always work and requires looking at the screen. Apple recognized this need. A custom ringtone that's tied to a particular person is the solution. To set this up, the user should open the Contacts app and choose someone from the list. Tapping the Edit button in the upper right corner allows changes to be made to the name, address, phone number, email address, and more. This is also where the user can change the ringtone for this caller. After scrolling down and tapping the Ringtone section, several options will appear, and among these, the user can change the Ringtone from the default to a preset or custom selection. New ringtones can be installed fun the iPhone's Tone Store.
Create New iPhone Vibrations
It's also possible to create new vibration patterns for the iPhone. This means that even when the ring is silenced, a caller from the Contacts list can be identified by the type of buzz that the iPhone makes. Haptic feedback is a great too l , allowing silent communication, and Apple makes this available to the user as well. The vibration option appears when setting a custom ringtone.
Tapping Vibration reveals a preset list to choose from. However, it's really easy to make custom patterns . At the bottom of the list, after choosing Create New Vibration, a touchpad will appear, and the iPhone records the length of any press, as well as the pauses in between, to recreate that pattern as a vibration. For example, the classic 'Shave and a Haircut' series of taps is a good one. With the iPhone's custom vibrations and ringtones, it's super-easy to identify who is calling even when the mute switch is engaged.

Custom ringtone for contact not working
Have iphone xr and upgraded to IOS 15.1. I think that was about the time, custom ringtone and text tone assigned to my spouse no longer worked, so started missing calls and sms messages.
Ringtone and Text tones have been in place since iphone 4s days and have never had problems.
Clicking on the ringtone / text tone plays the right sounds.
Have checked DND. Have checked volume is up.
Have checked phone is not on mute. Have turned iphone off / on.
Have searched google for answers and tried but no good.
Have notice a few users complaining about similar issue with IOS 15.1 being the cause but no solution.

Hi China888,
Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand a custom ringtone is not working, and we'd like to assist. It sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting so far. Are you not hearing any sound at all? Are other custom ringtones working? Have you changed the one for your spouse and then changed it back again? We recommend updating to iOS 15.1.1 if you haven't done so yet. Also, have you checked your Focus settings?
Use Focus on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
We look forward to learning more about your issue.

Thanks for coming back to me.
Had also deleted each custom ringtone one-by-one. Reloaded to itunes and sync to iphone. Custom not working.
Well, I spent some extended time yesterday 19/11/2021 with Apple Support senior advisor. Prior to be passed to him, I was advised that this was a known issue in ios 15.1 (??)
Confirmed if same custom tone was used as default ringtone or text tone, it worked as expected.
If custom tone was attached to a contact, then neither worked.
Purchased ringtone from itunes - attached to contact. Did not work for custom.
Re-checked focus settings.
Haptics and sound - turned volume slider to max right setting.
Checked mute/unmute button set correctly.
Cleaned speakers on iphone again
Went to accessibility and checked audio/visual settings.
re-check volume set maximum on left side iphone.
So after all this, it still did not work for custom ringtone attached to contact. Arranged appointment with Genius bar.
Story does have a happy ending. Texted my spouse on lack of progress. Response with custom ringtone....RANG. Sent another sms to call me. Phone rang with custom tone !!! Then had my son sms and call me. His custom ringtone and text toneworked as expected.
Somewhere during the investigation / analysis, the custom ringtone problem resolved itself. Just don't know what we did. Glad it works !.....Cancelled Genius bar and will monitor to see if problem remains fixed.......
