The Kumon English Programme

Our English programme aims to foster a love of reading and learning in every child. Students range from age two to older children, building skills from reading and word recognition to advanced level comprehension with the ability to critique complex passages of text. Vocabulary, grammatical precision, memorisation skills and the ability to compose answers are gradually accumulated through different genres of text, familiarising students with both fiction and non-fiction, expanding their knowledge of the world and introducing them to new areas of interest.

Our Instructors support students to be able to read thoroughly, extract key information from the content and express an opinion on what they have read in a compelling way. The Kumon English Programme is not tied to any curriculum but complements learning across all subjects at school, giving students the freedom to become advanced, independent and enthusiastic learners, as well as thoughtful individuals.

The Kumon English Programme helps early learners to understand the connection between spoken words and their written form, whilst building their concentration span. Students develop focus whilst studying with interest, working through their colourful worksheets with an early learner assistant.

As the student begins to recognise and read words, their Instructor will ensure that their worksheets not only increasingly challenge them but they will also continue to develop their concentration. Early learner study with Kumon is fun and engaging, allowing your child to develop their focus through a positive experience of learning from a young age.

The Kumon English Programme will enable your child to develop their confidence through learning key foundations in English with colourful and engaging worksheets working alongside an early learner Assistant. By giving work at just the right level for your child, combined with clear guidance from their Instructor, the programme helps to ensure a positive learning experience for your child, giving them the skills to succeed in their study. Our aim is to help your child to experience a sense of achievement every time they complete the worksheets.

Kumon study is individualised, meaning that each student works at exactly the right level for them, so that every student develops their confidence in current work before moving on.

From the very beginning of the Kumon English Programme we develop a child's approach to study so they can learn with enjoyment and success. Following the instruction and the intention of the worksheets, the child learns how to connect sounds to written words, and then begins to write those sounds with confidence, developing their ability to read, and their study skills.

Repeating and reciting

Learning to read and write, sentence building, paragraph building, summarisation.

Levels 7A to 6A engage students with the concept of reading through repeating and reciting. Learners point to and repeat simple familiar words that are both written and shown as vibrant illustrations. This helps them to associate spoken words with their written form. Through practice they move from repeating after the Instructor to reciting to the Instructor, as they start to memorise and recognise familiar words.

Levels 5A to 2A move learners from repeating and reciting to fluently reading words and short sentences aloud. They begin to trace words and learn letter sounds and how to blend them, all the time increasing their vocabulary. They also start to work on spelling patterns. By the end of level 2A they will be able to read short passages as well as write words independently and neatly. Throughout these levels, students are working to develop a sound study approach.

Levels A to C help students to put together simple sentences and understand more about their structure, expressions and punctuation. They build reading speed whilst being able to visualise the contents of the passage they are reading and grasp its meaning. They work on sentence complexity learning how to use the correct word order, verb forms and punctuation and use these skills to answer questions fully.

From levels D to F students work on grasping the flow of a story, identifying topics and main ideas, using many texts from the Kumon Recommended Reading List. In their reading they learn how to deduce the point of each paragraph and to express their understanding in written form through restatement and description. By the end of level F they will be able to unravel text and break it down to understand its topic and conclusion.

Levels G to I start to work on the students’ ability to express their own impressions of texts and to understand the sentiments of characters, including variations of mood and action, and how that is expressed. They learn how to summarise text, identifying key words and their relationship to each other, as well as answering comprehension questions concisely, drawing reasoned conclusions from the information they have read.

How does Kumon work?

Kumon students complete daily Kumon study at home. The time taken to complete a day’s work may be around 30 minutes per subject, although this study time can vary. In class, whether that’s in the centre or online, students complete their day’s worksheets and are observed and guided by the Instructor and a team of Assistants who support and encourage your child in their studies and ensure that they are progressing well.

Daily homework has been completed, with worksheets marked and corrections completed before class, ready to study

Marking and self-correction of worksheets

An adult should mark worksheets and the student completes corrections immediately to aid learning

Achieve perfect score when finishing class

It is important that each student finishes class with a sense of achievement, motivated for their next challenge

Great Guidance Every summer I buy workbooks for my two boys. This year I chose Kumon, I purchase the whole collection of Grade 4 for my son going into 4th grade and the whole collection of Grade 3 (thinking Grade 2 would be too easy) for my son going into 2nd grade. Later on I found that my younger son had difficulties in some areas in Grade 3 so I bought Grade 2.This has been a great guidance for my kids and I. The books helped my kids learn step by step and I really do see improvements. Its great for me, I simply use the answer sheet to correct and it helps me find out what their weaknesses are. Overall I really like Kumon workbooks compare to previous companies that I have purchased because I do see improvements. Next year I will purchase Kumon again.

Kumon Without the Daily Grind If your kid has been to Kumon, you know what is involved – yes, the daily grind for the kid and the parents. If you like that grind (each of the Kumon franchise will tell you how essential it is) then of course you do not have to buy this book.However, for rest of us, who questions that grind, this is an easier way to get the juice of the course but without the endless repetitions – at a fraction of the cost. The problems are not same as what a Kumon franchise offers. But that really did not matter. All problems are very nicely created. The difficulty level progresses through the course. And you can always go back to a previous level if you need to. I suggest you do not let your kid to mark the book to make this last part easier.The price of the book is right. However, I wish the book should have been thicker with more problems – of course a 80 page book cannot be sufficient for the entire year even if the price goes up a bit.

Excellent Book for 4th graders I bought this book for my fourth grader to help her understand the fundamentals of using multiplication and division in everyday life. This book helper her a lot! The chapters in this book let kids practice same type of problem multiple times. This helps them remember the patterns of solving problems of different type. The other benefit of this book is that a chapter with a certain type of multiplication problems is coupled with a chapter which helps solve inverted problems with division. I would recommend this book for anyone trying to help their kids understand how important multiplication and division concepts.

This book needs revised. Most of the word problems are just fine but there are literally more than a few stupid, stupid word problems…word problems that make you cock your head to the side and quizzically ask, “Why? Really? Why would the authors take an opportunity to make math relevant and write this ridiculously stupid problem?” I’ve told all my students that word problems are life. Any math we use in our lives has to be “word problems”. I teach them to “see” the problem before trying to figure out what operation(s) to use to solve it, so it is critical that they get the reinforcement that this is relevant to their lives. Being given stupidly ridiculous inane problems only reinforces how much they hate math and how unimportant it is for their lives. Nothing could be less true though. Get rid of those problems and this book is GREAT! Unfortunately, previewing all the worksheets and eliminating the inane ones prior to letting the kids work through is critical.

Excellent Im am helping a friends daugther study for the AZ Aims test. Not much information on the test is available nor study material. The makers of the test have three released exams, and thats all so, i was looking for a book with similar word type problems to study with. I figured out, the was having issues with certain keywords that changed the meaning of what was being asked. So with this workbook, I know had lots of word problems with similar style as the test. Well after doing a few problems in the book, the child finally started to see the trick question. The child finally passed the exam with ease after having failed it before being tutored. But with out the book it would have been difficult to write so many brand new questions.

A little easy for a 4th grader For a word problems workbook, I would have expected problems that require more concept-level thinking (what operation is needed here?). The problems provide plenty of repeat practice for basic math functions, but there’s not much mix of types of problems in each lesson, so the student isn’t really required to do much critical thinking in figuring out what approach to use in solving the problem. Once the student solves the first problem or two, the rest of the problems are pretty predictable. I would prefer to have quicker math functions involved if it meant my daughter had to spend more time critically evaluating the path to the solution.

Word problems you dont need to read There is no point in a word problem when you tell the student ahead of time that its a division problem. The majority of this book is division problems with a big heading “Division” on the top. Kids just find the numbers and divide the bigger number by the smaller number. A page or two is fine, but the majority of the sections should be mixed arithmetic word problems so that students have to read the problem, figure out what is going on, and determine which operation to use. To the publisher, consider a rewrite. To buyers, look elsewhere. Or just print some off the web. You cant get anything less useful.

Just what I was looking for! Will write a second review later; but, just wanted to let parents/readers know that I browsed through the book and it looks great. My daughter did 2 pages of it and the questions in books are already picking her brain!!! It is less boring (better than plain old additions/substractions/multiplication/division exercise rut)! She loves to check on the net to see how many meters are in a kilometer to solve the problems in the book. So far so good; keeping my fingers crossed.

Very good practice for kid to convert word problem to math question. My kids have no trouble to do the pure math calculation, but he had trouble to understand word problems and convert them into math model. I needed some material that can train him this skill. I purchased this, and ask him do a page each days. He almost finished the book now, and I can see his improvement. He now had less issue to understand the word problem, and not also be disturbed by the noise in the word questions.

The Kumon Method of Learning

The origins of the Kumon Method came about in 1954, when Toru Kumon – a maths teacher – created worksheets for his son to develop his calculation skills and to help him progress in his mathematics. These worksheets formed the foundation of the Kumon Method used in all Kumon Centres worldwide.

• Free Registration Campaign (FRC) is valid for ‘New’ Kumon students only during the offer month.
• FRC is valid for both subjects – Maths & English.
• Under FRC, one time ‘Registration Fees’ worth Rs. 1200 (India) / LKR 1000 (Sri Lanka) will be completely waived off for ‘new’ students.
• To be eligible, parents need to pay the tuition fee only. However, the fees must be paid for the current offer month, ideally before the 20th day of the month.

How does Kumon work?

Kumon students complete daily Kumon study at home and attend a study session twice a week – either at the Kumon Centre or via an online class.  The time taken to complete a day’s work may be around 30 minutes per subject, although this study time can vary. In class (Centre or online), students complete their day’s worksheets and are observed and guided by the Instructor and a team of Assistants who support and encourage your child in their studies and ensure that they are progressing well. Students receive new work during their visits to the Centre or through the Centre’s worksheet pick up / delivery arrangements.

Students attend their classes, online or at the Centre, to ensure the Instructor can develop their self-learning and academic skills

Preparation for class

Daily homework has been completed, with worksheets marked and corrections completed before class, ready to study

Completion of worksheets

Receive Instructor guidance when necessary

• The Free Trial Classes campaign will only be available from 18th April to 30th April 2016, subject to the different class schedules available at each Kumon centre. Schedule for the respective centres can be found at http://my.kumonglobal.com.
• The Free Trial Classes campaign is only applicable for the Kumon Mathematics Programme. This campaign is available at all Kumon centres in Malaysia except the Kumon Vista Kiara Centre. Registration must be done at any preferred Kumon centres before 15th April 2016.
• Only new students aged 4-17 are eligible to participate.
• Acceptance into the Free Trial Classes campaign is on a first come first served basis.
• The number of participants will be depending on each Kumon centre’s capacity.
• Prior to the Free Trial Classes campaign enrolment, attendance at the Parents’ Orientation is mandatory.
• Late enrolment may result in fewer study sessions within the campaign period.
• Homework will be assigned to students to work on for non-class days within 18th April to 30th April 2016.
• No Kumon bag will be given upon Free Trial Classes campaign registration.
• By participating in this campaign, all participants are in agreement to the Terms and Conditions stated above.
