Best business plan software of 2024

For planning your business finance

  • The best business plan software in full

Best overall

Best budget, best established, best for speed, other business plan software to consider.

  • How we test

The best business plan software makes it simple and easy to plan your business finances in order to present them to a bank or investors.

The best business plan software of 2024 in full 1. Best overall 2. Best budget 3. Best basic 4. Best established 5. Best for speed 6. Other business plan software to consider 7. FAQs 8. How we test

The whole point of a business plan is that it allows you to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, not least via your Unique Selling Point (USP) ,and make product or service comparisons with competitors.

Of course, even the best business plan relies on estimates and guesstimates, as it's impossible to predict market changes, developments, and future performance under such conditions.

Ultimately, though, a business plan will demonstratively prove why your business is a solid enough investment to risk putting money into, and shows that you have properly and thoroughly researched your market, and details the real potential of a new business opportunities.

Here then are the best business plan software providers currently available.

You can also look at our featured best free software for small business .

The best business plan software in full:

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Bizplan is the online business planning tool that claims usage of 30,000 startup founders from the Startups.co platform. They use a guided creator that can break the big project down into the component pieces that get tracked with a Progress Tracker, and expert guidance each step of the way including templates that can be dropped in, and completed, along with simple integration of visuals along the way.

Additional resources are also provided via the Bizplan Academy, with lessons on relevant topics, for example, “Building a Brand: How to Tell a Powerful Brand Story,” and “Critical Path Your Way to Higher Revenues,” among the many offerings. Those that need even more assistance also can take advantage of an expert consultation from a financial expert.

2. PlanGuru

PlanGuru is a comprehensive, and powerful software package in the business planning space. Education is provided via a series of case studies at their PlanGuru University and a whole slew of video tutorials.

The feature set includes flexible budgeting that can handle a simple small business, or a larger multi-department operating budget, and financial forecasting that uses multiple methods, including intelligent and turn-key methods - twenty methods in total. Historical results can also be imported with the general ledger import utility which can then applied to produce a rolling forecast. They also offer PlanGuru Launch, a service to bring in expertise and is charged per hour of assistance.

A significant downside is Planguru charges a higher cost than other software options. The cheapest option is around $75 per month for one business entity when billed annually. While there is no free trial, PlanGuru does offer a 30 day money back guarantee.

Our expert review:

Enloop is a great choice for business planning software for the cash strapped business as it is the rare offering that has a free tier. Step up up to the next tier, and this is no barebones product, as it has over 100 currency symbols, can automatically generate bank-ready financial reports, and even has automated text writing that can sync with financial data to turn it into text. There is also a real time performance score assigned, that dynamically changes as the business plan is strengthened.

The plans start with the Free tier, which is limited to a single business plan with simple text, no images, and does not offer any advanced features. The next plan up is the Detailed plan, that supports three business plans, and offers a significant 55% discount when paid annually, making it even better value. This plan costs around $20 per month. For a more comprehensive package you can buy the Performance plan costing around $40 per month.

4. LivePlan

LivePlan is business planning software that offers a simple pricing scheme as there is only a single plan to choose from. As they have a 15+ year track record, they offer a clean and simple interface, that can create business plans that look like they were done by an expert consultant, and the software includes a live dashboard that can track day-to-day performance. Those with writer’s block will benefit from the over 500 included sample plans that can be turned to for inspiration.

Rather than complicate things with too many tiers to choose from, LivePlan only has a single plan which can be paid for monthly or annually.

5. Business Sorter

Business Sorter promises to simplify and speed up business planning and claims to be able to flesh out a plan in an hour or two, via a novel 273 card sort system that covers many common situations.

The ability to reword cards is included, or also to add cards to the already expansive deck, so no worries if there is not a pre-made card for your situation. Unlike some sites that have videos, the educational resources here are provided as PDFs and Word files, which can be quicker to access, but harder to follow for some learners.

The lowest tier plan, Basic is fully featured, and includes up to three team leaders.

We've only covered some of the most popular business plan software platforms out there, but there are a number of other notables worth mentioning, plus a wide variety of providers of business plan templates. Below we'll briefly cover a range of some of the additional options out there that are worth considering to get your business plan right.

Go Business Plans is more of a consultancy than a software solution, but is worth mentioning for the simple fact that it's one of America's biggest business plan companies. While software might be able to do the job for you, if you're looking for significant funding, it's probably useful to get some professional advice, not least in terms of strategic planning, feasibility studies, and financial projections to ensure you have a solid base for your business plan.

Wise Business Plans provides a very wide range of templates to work from in constructing a business plan. These are particularly designed with funding in mind, no matter what kind of business you run. What is especially helpful is that Wise doesn’t simply deal with business plan templates for a diverse range of business types, the company also provides plan templates for franchises and non-profits.

Plan Writers  is another bespoke service that essentially listens to what you want and then puts the plan together for you. Again, this technically falls outside of business plan "software", but the chances are you'll use a software package as a platform to build from, and Plan Writers can then help you build up from that base.

Bplans is another provider of business plan templates, but goes beyond that with additional pitch and SWOT analysis templates. There are also business plan guides, industry reports, and a free course on writing a business plan. Bplans also publishes a lot of free-to-use articles on business planning, financials, and tax reporting, to help ensure you can keep your figures and projections accurate and compliant.

A business plan is essentially your roadmap to profitability from an initial investment. Whether it's your own money, or a loan from a bank, it's still a good idea to set up a business plan for yourself.

Main things to look to are a SWOT analysis to provide an idea of your business idea's strengths and weaknesses, as well as identify a unique selling point (USP) that will give your business an edge.

While business plans inevitably demand the use of figures, and while these can be impossible to be accurate with, at least by making intelligent guesses you can set yourself targets to work towards.

That's another common feature of a plan, so that specific periods you can review your business progress and make adjustments to your plan as required. This allows you to use real figures for your projections, allowing you to better plan ahead.

Which business plan software is best for you?

When deciding which business plan software to use, first consider what your actual needs are, as sometimes free platforms may only provide basic options, so if you need to use advanced tools you may find a paid platform is much more worthwhile. Additionally, free and budget software options can sometimes prove limited when it comes to the variety of tools available, while higher-end software can really cater for every need, so do ensure you have a good idea of which features you think you may require.

How we tested the best business plan software

To test for the best business plan software we first set up an account with the relevant software platform, whether as a download or as an online service. We then tested the service to see how the software could be used for different purposes and in different situations. The aim was to push each business plan software platform to see how useful its basic tools were and also how easy it was to get to grips with any more advanced tools.

Best Planner Apps for Mac In 2024

ProjectManager

No matter what kind of project you want to tackle, you must have a plan first. Planning is the cornerstone of project management, but if you’re a Mac user, then you’re going to find that a lot of the big players in the field don’t want you on their team.

There is no Microsoft planner for Mac, or Microsoft Project for Mac , for that matter. Why they would ignore such a large potential client base is not for us to ask, but managers using Apple products are still in need of a good planning app.

Despite there not being a Microsoft planner for Mac, there are plenty of other companies that offer great planning software with Mac compatibility. We’ve tested out a bunch and came back with these reviews of the best planner apps for Mac.

2024 Best Planning Apps for Mac Rankings

1. projectmanager.

ProjectManager is an award-winning planning software that works on Mac or PC. It’s a cloud-based app, which means that users can access the software anywhere there’s an internet connection. That means you can create a plan in the office or on the go.

This planner app for Mac lets you organize your project by collecting tasks, setting due dates, prioritizing them, tagging them for easier searching, linking dependencies to avoid bottlenecks and setting milestones to break up the project into more manageable pieces. Plus there’s a free 30-day trial so you can try this planning app for Mac yourself before you buy.

Gantt Charts for Planning

Not everyone plans the same way, which is why the tool has multiple project views. Get the flexibility you need to better plan your project with online Gantt charts that provide managers with more control over their scheduling by showing all the tasks on a timeline. The Gantt helps you manage tasks and all the associated resources and costs. Plus, you can compare planned vs actuals and track progress in real time.

Kanban Boards for Work Flows

If you’re a more visual worker, there are kanban boards that show the workflow by breaking up the production cycle into columns under which are stack cards that represent each task. This gives managers visibility into the process to reallocate resources to match their team’s capacity, and teams are able to build a backlog and manage their work together.

develop workflows on Mac with this planner tool

Collaborative Task Management

There are also calendar views and a task list. All the data is the same no matter what view you choose. Each task can have a detailed description to help teams execute it. Files can be attached directly to the tasks, too. The software acts as the central hub for all your project documentation, saving you time when you need to look at any important paperwork.

Keeping everyone in the project updated when you plan or change something is the plan is key to staying productive and on schedule. The plan can be monitored and tracked as it is being executed. Email notifications and in-app alerts will inform the project team of any changes to tasks when due dates are approaching and more. It keeps everyone in the loop.

Dashboards for Tracking

The planning app for Mac also has features that give you a high-level view of the project as it’s happening with a real-time dashboard. The dashboard collects project data and automatically calculates it to display in easy-to-read graphs and charts. Users get instant status reports on progress, cost, resource availability and more.

Plus, if your organization is married to Microsoft Project but you’re working on a Mac, ProjectManagerlets you import and export MPP files. Ready to get started? Click here for a free 30-day trial with full access to all their features.

  • Team plan: $13 user/month
  • Business plan: $24 user/month
  • Does ProjectManager offer a free trial? Yes, ProjectManager has a 30-day free trial
  • Does ProjectManager have a mobile project management app? Yes, it’s available for Android and iOS

2. Project Planning Pro

Project Planning Pro is a mobile app developed specifically for project managers that need a tool that allows them to make plans while out in the field (or just on the go). You can create a project plan quickly—just enter the tasks, start and end dates. There’s an interactive Gantt chart that allows you to edit and update the tasks quickly and simply.

It’s easy to manage tasks and collaborate with teams to increase productivity, especially when you’re not in the office. The tool was designed for project managers that are traveling a lot and need to stay connected to their projects.

For example, if you’re working on an iPad you can use simple gestures to update your Gantt or see the critical path. It links all four task dependencies and can import and export Microsoft Project if your company uses this tool.

  • Project Planning Pro for Mac is $34.99
  • Does Project Planning Pro offer a free trial? No, there isn’t a free trial
  • Does Project Planning Pro offer a free version? No, there isn’t a free version

3. Project Plan 365

Project Plan 365 is another planner app for Mac that’s easy to use for project managers and small teams, especially if they’re working in a fast-paced office or in distributed teams. Like other apps highlighted here, it’s also used as an extension for Microsoft Project, which is unavailable for Mac. It supports all MS Project views, such as Gantt charts, task sheets, network diagram, project calendar , task and resource usage, team planning and more.

The software is flexible enough to work in a variety of industries including construction, engineering, software development, marketing and sales, banking and finance and much more. Since it has both a Mac desktop application and a cloud interface, you can work online or offline.

While it’s built to act as a MS Project alternative or extension, it’s also compatible with Windows and Android phones. You can back up your work to its cloud server or use Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and OneDrive.

  • Standard plan is $9.99/month
  • Business plan is $16.19/month
  • Does Project Plan 365 offer a free trial? Yes, there’s a 30-day free trial
  • Does Project Plan 365 offer a free version? No, there isn’t a free version

4. GanttPRO

GanttPRO is an online planning app that uses Gantt charts to support planning and scheduling projects. It’s a great solution for small teams, though it doesn’t have the customizable reports and dashboards that you’ll find in more powerful planning apps for Mac. However, it’s got a low price point of entry and a great design.

If you love managing projects on Gantts, then this is the tool for you. It has custom fields for tasks, kanban board views and calculates the critical path.

The app is made for smaller organizations that don’t need the bells and whistles of reporting features and invoicing tools. The web-based software has a very intuitive interface and it’s simple to start a project. Drag-and-drop features add to the ease of adding tasks, linking dependencies, assigning resources, tracking progress and editing. Teams can comment and collaborate, get real-time notifications and managers can track their team’s performance and workload.

  • Individual plan is $15 per user/month
  • Team plan is $8.90 per user/month
  • Does GanttPRO offer a free trial? Yes, there’s a 15-day free trial
  • Does GanttPRO have a mobile app? Yes, it’s available on iOS and Android

Hive refers to itself as a “productivity platform,” and this cloud-based planner app for Mac lives up to its motto. It is ideal for big and small teams, with many features to help with planning and executing projects. It has file sharing, task management, automation and chat.

Users can set up tasks and their duration, add tags and attach files. Then track the status of the task. It uses a kanban-like interface, but also has a Gantt view.

A big selling point is its three dashboards that track project metrics and provide insights into performance. Using this monitoring feature helps managers identify inefficiencies and resolve these issues to boost productivity, and it keeps managers and teams updated with alerts. Another pro is that much of what you will need to know is displayed on one page, which adds to its ease of use. However, while Hive is a useful project planner for Mac, it might not be the best project management software . First, Hive’s status, list and team project views are simply variations of a kanban board. Also, Hive’s Gantt chart lacks advanced project management features such as identifying the critical path or showing a work breakdown structure.

  • Hive Solo is $0 per user/month
  • Hive Teams is $12 per user/month
  • Does Hive offer a free trial? Yes, there’s a 14-day free trial
  • Does Hive have a mobile app? Yes, it’s available in the App Store

ProjectManager is award-winning software that is the best planner app for Mac . It saves you money and increases your productivity. Making plans on Gantts or Kanban boards controls every aspect of your plan, and multiple project views allow you to work how you want. Resource management, timesheets and other planning-related features all combine to make this the one project management tool you’ll need to deliver successful projects. Their business plan creation software offers financial forecasting features for up to 36 months.

  • Enloop offers some sample business plans that are easy to modify.

Enloop receives fair feedback from customers. Enloop's reviews average 3 stars out of 5 on PCMag. Enloop's main complaint is its lack of instructional text for writing mission statements and other key sections. What they rank high on is their efficiency and the speed at which the software lets you write a business plan.

Even beyond the free version, Enloop Basic is just $9.95/month ($6/month when paid annually), so they’re one of the least expensive tools for writing a business plan.

Image of the company logo.

4. PlanGuru - $99/month to $299/month

PlanGuru is a good option if you’re looking for considerably more robust software that offers quite a bit more. The most notable feature we like is the valuation tool, only present on the desktop version of the software. PlanGuru lets you calculate the valuation of your business using three different methods. No other business plan software offers this that we know of.

PlanGuru also offers budgeting, forecasting, and performance tools to help you put together a business plan. In the main, PlanGuru allows you to get a custom-tailored three financial statement budget model up and running out of QuickBooks or Xero in a matter of minutes. PlanGuru's business plan writing software takes you through a setup process where it asks you questions such as:

  • What's the first month of your fiscal year?
  • How many historical years do you want to import?

And, once you answer these questions, PlanGuru then generates a model for you that you can then populate with your historical data if you have it. Then you can go through PlanGuru's 20+ projection methods.

Some financial data projection methods include:

  • Expenses, like payroll, etc.
  • Balance sheet items, like accounts receivable, accounts payable, crude expenses, prepaid expenses, loans, etc.

These are only a few of the features the business plan software offers. Here are some more.

  • Budgeting/Forecasting Software
  • Analytics Service for Financial Performance & KPIs
  • Valuation calculations (desktop software only)
  • Desktop and cloud-based options
  • Free 14-day trial and 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Great customer support and knowledgeable sales staff
  • Lower-cost yearly plans offered
  • Advanced financial calculations
  • Business valuation calculations
  • No contracts
  • Integrates with QuickBooks and Xero
  • Costlier than LivePlan and most other business plan software options
  • Additional cost per user can add up quickly

The great thing about PlanGuru is that the only thing you have to worry about is the income statement and balance sheet projections because the cash flow statement is automatically generated.

Then once you have the cash flow statement, income statement, and balance sheet in place, you can then lock down the budget.

  • PlanGuru's desktop version has three different types of valuation methods that calculate the worth of your business.
  • PlanGuru has some really nice reporting tools that pull together your financial statements into table formats, say, for the bank, line-by-line.
  • PlanGuru also has some nice charts, graphs, scorecards, and some easily digestible reports that can help you visualize how your company is performing.
  • Exports to Excel, PDF, and Word documents --and, there's even a tool that lets you create customized reports.
  • You can print your plan off too to show partners, lenders, and investors.
  • PlanGuru now offers a cloud-based version of its software, though it will take some time to catch up to the rich features offered by the current desktop software version.
  • With PlanGuru you also get free updates, bug fixes, and new releases as they become available.

Important Note: These tools are important because investors may want to see not only historical performance but also projections.

5. IdeaBuddy - Free to $35/month

IdeaBuddy makes our list because of what's behind their approach. IdeaBuddy focuses on helping entrepreneurs develop their idea first, then share it, and then refine it into a plan. If you have a business idea and don't know what to do next, IdeaBuddy could be what you're looking for in a business plan software.

  • Single-page business plan pitch (Idea plan)
  • Clean modern design platform combined with great financial tools
  • Marketing plan for selling and promoting your products
  • Market overview plan where you create targeted customer profiles, identify your competition and calculate the market potential
  • Business plan creation that includes forecasting performance and cash flow projections
  • A proprietary algorithm calculates a final score for your idea providing recommendations for improvement after you complete "Story Mode"
  • Idea Journal, that is an internal business plan for you to show potential investors
  • A lifetime plan costs only $178
  • Great for developing ideas
  • Great for doing market research
  • Pay-as-you-go plans offered
  • Email-only customer service
  • Software lag time issues
  • Fewer software options than most other small business options

IdeaBuddy has some great features that are fantastic from idea conceptualization down to cost projections and the laying out of steps to take to start a business. We would have liked, however, to been given more KPIs that would notify us of tasks, help with idea validation, and help us measure other objectives to better monitor the health of our business. Another thing lacking was the design of the finished plan--it contained some noticeable structural issues.

IdeaBuddy has received some outstanding customer reviews on GetApp. IdeaBuddy has earned a 4.6-star rating out of 5 possible stars.

iPlanner's Business Planning Software

Business Plan Software Pros and Cons

  • By using business plan software providers, you’ll be able to create a solid outline for your business. Although some of the options above are better than others, each will walk you through from start to finish.
  • No matter how you look at it, business plan software is cost-effective. As long as you actually use the tool, you’ll generate significantly more value than you’re spending on monthly subscription fees.
  • If you spend the time to create a solid plan, you’re much more likely to hold yourself accountable. Think of planning software like an accountability buddy for entrepreneurship.
  • Your business plan tool will help set realistic financial goals, and most can also keep your bottom line in check by integrating your accounting software.
  • Business planning software enables you to collaborate with partners, mentors and investors.
  • Some of the business plan tools don’t offer support and can have slightly buggy features. That said, if you’re serious about writing a solid plan, go with a tool that’s constantly updated and well made.
  • Although some business plan tools have a collaboration feature, none of them can review it when you’re done. All business planning tools lack a human touch.

How to Choose the Right Business Plan Software

With the array of business planning tools available, it can be daunting to select the right one for your needs. Here are some tips for choosing a business plan software solution:

  • Consider your skill level – Opt for software like a wizard-guided template if you are less experienced in writing plans. Choose more advanced software with greater flexibility once you know what you are doing. Look for drag-and-drop tools to easily organize sections.
  • Determine your budget – Prices range from free to several hundred dollars. Know how much you can spend before shopping.
  • Compare features – Look for software with the specific tools you need, like financial projections, sample text, customizable templates, and more.
  • Evaluate the financial tool capabilities – The software should provide extensive financial tools like forecasting, modeling, projections, and dashboards to streamline financial planning.
  • Check reviews and ratings – Get feedback from other users about their experience with the software. High reviews indicate easier, more user-friendly software.

LivePlan: Best overall business plan software

Data as of 3 /13/23 . Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. *With annual billing

LivePlan has been our favorite business plan software for a while now, despite the stiff competition.

There’s a lot to like about LivePlan. It has pretty much all the features you could want from your business plan software. LivePlan gives you step-by-step instructions for writing your plan, helps you create financial reports, lets you compare your business’s actual financials to your plan’s goals, and much more. LivePlan software pricing

But the best part? You get all that (and more) at a very competitive price. (You can choose from annual, six-month, or monthly billing.) So there’s no risk in trying LivePlan out for yourself.

With a great balance of features and cost, LivePlan offers the best business plan solution for most businesses.

BizPlanBuilder: Most user-friendly

Need something easy to use? BizPlanBuilder fits the bill.

BizPlanBuilder doesn’t have a flashy, modern user interface―but it does have a very clear, intuitive one. You’ll be able to see your plan’s overall structure at a glance, so you can quickly navigate from your title page to your market trend section to that paragraph on your core values. And as you write, you’ll use a text editor that looks a whole lot like the word processing programs you’re already familiar with.

BizPlanBuilder software pricing

Data effective 3/13/23. At publishing time, amounts, rates, and requirements are current but are subject to change. Offers may not be available in all areas.

BizPlanBuilder also offers lots of helpful guidance for actually writing your plan. It gives you pre-written text, in which you just have to fill in relevant details. It offers explanations for what information you need to include in each section of your plan and way. It even gives you helpful tips from experts, so you’ll have all the information you need to plan like a pro.

So if you want planning software with almost no learning curve, you’ll like BizPlanBuilder.

Wise Business Plans: Best professional service

  • Custom quote

Unlike all the other companies on this list, Wise Business Plans doesn’t offer software. Instead, it offers professional business plan writing services―meaning someone does all the hard work for you.

Now, you might think that sounds expensive―and you’re probably right (you have to request a custom quote for your plan). But there’s a lot to be said for expertise, and Wise Business Plans has plenty of that. Your business plan will get written by an experienced writer (with an MBA, no less). They’ll get information from you, do their own research, and then write your plan. You get one free revision, and you can always pay for more.

Wise Business Plans service pricing

Your end result will be a polished, entirely original business plan. (You can even get printed copies.) And best of all, you won’t have to spend your precious time working on the plan yourself. Wise Business Plans takes care of all the hard parts, and makes your business look good while doing it. Sounds like a service worth paying for, right?

Put simply, if you want the most professional business plan possible, we recommend using Wise Business Plans’s writing service.

Business Sorter: Best for internal plans

Many businesses need plans to show to people outside the company (to get financing, for example). But what if you just need a plan for internal use? In that case, we suggest Business Sorter.

Business Sorter uses a unique card-based method to help you craft the perfect business plan. (You can watch a demo video to see how it works.) You’ll plan some of the usual things, like finances and marketing. But Business Sorter also lets you make plans for specific teams and team members. It also emphasizes more internal matters, like operations, that might get overlooked in a business plan for outsiders.

Business Sorter software pricing

After you’ve made your business plan, Business Sorter also helps you stay accountable to it. You can create tasks, give them deadlines, and assign them to team members―giving you basic project management tools to make sure your business plans become business actions. (Oh, and did we mention that Business Sorter has the lowest starting prices of any software on this list?)

It all adds up to a business plan software that works great for internal planning.

GoSmallBiz: Most extra features

Want to get way more than just business planning software? Then you probably want GoSmallBiz.

See, GoSmallBiz offers business plan software as part of its service―but it’s just one part of a much bigger whole. You also get everything from discounts on legal services to a website builder to a CRM (customer relationship manager) to business document templates. And more. In other words, you get just about everything you need to get your startup off the ground.

GoSmallBiz software pricing

Don’t worry though―you still get all the business planning help you need. GoSmallBiz gives you business plan templates, step-by-step instructions, and the ability to create financial projections. And if you get stuck, GoSmallBiz will put you in touch with experts who can offer advice.

If you want business planning and much, much more, give GoSmallBiz a try.

  • PlanGuru : Best financial forecasting
  • EnLoop : Cheapest tool for startups

We recommend the software above for most business planning needs. Some businesses, though, might be interested in these more specialized planning software.

Honorable mention software pricing

Planguru: best financial forecasting features.

Plan Guru

PlanGuru is pretty pricey compared to our other picks, but you might find its forecasting features worth paying for. It has more forecasting methods than other software (over 20) plus it lets you forecast up to 10 years.

EnLoop: Cheapest tool for startups

enloop logo

EnLoop doesn’t have our favorite features or interface, but it does have really, really low pricing plus a seven-day free trial. It's the most affordable software for startup business planning and still provides all the essential features like financial analysis, team collaboration, charting, and more.

Data as of 3 /13/23 . Offers and availability may vary by location and are subject to change. * With annual billing

Several of our previous favorite planning software, including BusinessPlanPro and StratPad, seem to have gone out of business.

A business plan is a written, living document that tells the story of your business and what you plan to do with it. It serves as the source of truth for you—the business owner—as well as potential partners, employees, and investors, but it also serves as a roadmap of what you want your business to be.

Why you need a business plan

While some small-business owners don’t see the point of creating a formal business plan, it can have some concrete benefits for your business. For example, one 2016 study found that business owners with written plans are more successful than those that don’t. 1

Still too vague? Then let’s get specific.

If you ever seek business funding (from, say, banks, angel investors , or venture capitalists ), you’ll have to prove that your business deserves the money you want. A formal business plan―complete with financial data and projections―gives you a professional document you can use to make your case. (In fact, most potential investors will expect you to have a business plan ready.)

Even if you’re not seeking funding right now, a business plan can help your business. A formal plan can guide your business’s direction and decision making. It can keep your business accountable (by, for example, seeing if your business meets the financial projections you included). And a formal plan offers a great way to make sure your team stays on the same page.

What to include in your business plan

Not all business plans are created equal. To make a really useful business plan, you’ll want to include a number of elements:

  • Basic information about your business
  • Your products/services
  • Market and industry analysis
  • What makes your business competitive
  • Strategies and upcoming plans
  • Your team (and your team’s background)
  • Current financial status
  • Financial and market projections
  • Executive summary

Of course, you can include more or fewer elements―whatever makes sense for your business. Just make sure your business plan is comprehensive (but not overwhelming).

How business plan software can help

With so many elements to include, business plan creation can take a while. Business plan software tries to speed things up.

Most business plan software will include prompts for each section. In some cases, you can just fill in your business’s specific information, and the software will write the text for you. In other cases, the software will give you specific guidance and examples, helping you write the text yourself.

Plus, business plan software can help you stay organized. You’ll usually get intuitive menus that let you quickly flip through sections. So rather than endlessly scrolling through a long document in a word processor, you can quickly find your way around your plan. Some software even lets you drag and drop sections to reorganize your plan.

Sounds way easier than just staring at a blank page and trying to start from scratch, right?

Choosing business plan software

To find the right business plan builder for your business, you’ll want to compare features. For example, would you rather write your own text, getting prompts and advice from your software? Or would you rather go with a fill-in-the-blank method?

Likewise, think about the elements you need. If your plan will have a heavy focus on finances, you’ll want to choose business plan software with robust financial projection features. If you care more about market and competitor analysis, look for software that can help with that research.

You may also want to find business plan software that integrates with your business accounting software . Some plan builders will import data from Xero, QuickBooks, etc. to quickly generate your financial data and projections.

And of course, you’ll want to compare prices. After all, you always want to end up with software that fits your business budget.

The right business plan software can make your life easier. With LivePlan ’s wide breadth of features and online learning tools, you can’t go wrong. Plus, BizPlanBuilder 's one-time pricing makes it easy to invest while Business Sorter has a low starting cost. And if you're business is looking to grow, GoSmallBiz and Wise Business Plans will scale with you.

But of course, different companies have different needs. So shop around until you find the software that’s best for you and your business.

Now that you've got a business plan, take a look at our checklist for starting a small business.  It can help you make sure you have everything else you need to get your startup off to a good start!

Creating a business plan can take anywhere from a couple hours to several weeks. Your timeline will depend on things like the elements you choose to include, whether you use software or hire a writing service, and how much research goes into your plan.

That said, much of the business plan software out there brags that it can help you create a fairly detailed plan in a few hours. So if you’re going the software route, that can help you set your expectations.

If you want to get the most out of your business plan, you should update it on a regular basis―at least annually. That way, you can continually refer to it to inform your company’s strategies and direction.

At the very least, you should update your business plan before you start looking for a new round of funding (whether that’s with investors or lenders).

Thanks to business plan software, you can easily write your own business plan rather than pay someone to do it for you. And in most cases, software will cost you less than a professional business plan service.

There are some times you might want to go with a service though. If time is tight, you might find that it’s worth the cost of a service. Or if you’ve got big investor meetings on the horizon, you might want the expertise and polish that a professional service can offer.

Ultimately, you’ll have to decide for yourself whether business plan software or a business plan service will work better for your company.

Methodology

We ranked business plan software and tools based on features, pricing and plans, and connections to project management and other services. The value of each plan and service, along with what it offers, was a big consideration in our rankings, and we looked to see if what was offered was useful to small businesses or just extra. The final thing we looked at was the ease of use of the software to see if it's too complex for small businesses.

At Business.org, our research is meant to offer general product and service recommendations. We don't guarantee that our suggestions will work best for each individual or business, so consider your unique needs when choosing products and services.

While project management apps run well via web browsers (see our list of the best web project management software ), our project management gurus always recommend using native apps for operating systems. Native apps can bring stability and performance boosts. However, not all apps are created equally. In this guide, we’ve rounded up the best project management software for macOS and iOS.

Key Takeaways: iOS & Mac Project Management

  • monday.com is the best overall project management software for Mac users. However, all the options listed here offer apps for macOS and iOS that get the job done.
  • The iOS mobile apps for each platform are barebones but are fine to use for basic task management.
  • Before signing up for the paid plans, be sure to take advantage of the free trials on offer. Key features vary from platform to platform, and it’s worth taking the time to find the best solution for you.

After running a series of hands-on tests, we concluded that monday.com is the best overall software for Apple users, thanks to its powerful feature set and solid desktop and mobile applications. However, there are many others here that made our list of best project management software (click the link to read it). Below, we will break down our picks for the best project management software for Mac and iOS.

Top Project Management Apps for macOS & iOS

What makes the best project management software for mac & ios.

What makes a piece of software a viable option varies from person to person. However, we look for project management tools that work well in web browsers and native apps.

With this in mind, we’ve tested those below to make sure they’re stable, smooth and to see if they play nicely with touchscreens. Below are six task and resource management apps that stand out, including monday.com, Asana, Wrike, Trello and ClickUp.

  • monday.com — Powerful, beautiful and feature-packed, monday.com takes the top spot
  • Asana — A beautiful task management platform with a solid free tier and friendly UI
  • Wrike — One of the best apps thanks to solid features and a clean interface
  • Trello — The master of kanban boards performs well on iOS and Mac devices
  • ClickUp — A fully featured project management solution that’s great for complex tasks
  • nTask — Easy-to-use task management software that’s also wallet-friendly

The project management solutions above represent the top performers in our tests for iPhone, iPad and Mac users. The programs excel at managing multiple projects, and they offer compelling free and paid tiers. In addition, the apps are well-designed, fluid and easy to use. It should be no surprise that monday.com takes the project management crown, but all of the programs here are solid.

The 6 Best Project Management Software for Mac & iOS

Below, we’ll break down the six Mac project management suites listed above. Have a look at the list to see which platform is the right task management software for you.

1. monday.com

monday ipad app

More details about monday.com:

  • Pricing : Free, $9 per month (one-year plan) per user
  • Provider website : monday.com
  • A robust feature set
  • Easy on the eyes
  • Great desktop & mobile apps
  • The free plan could be better
  • The Basic plan is too basic
  • iOS app is light on features

monday.com is the best iOS and Mac project management software thanks to its comprehensive feature set that offers all the charts, reports, integrations and communication tools you could need. The software looks beautiful, is easy to manipulate and provides enough security to put end users at ease.

Whether you’re managing simple tasks or complex projects, monday.com will have your back. You’ll find Gantt charts, kanban boards, timelines, calendars and robust tools that will help your team. While integrations with many popular apps and automations are present in the desktop app, they’ve been removed from the iOS app, which is unfortunate but understandable.

A plus is monday.com’s touchscreen UI. During our testing, we found that dragging cards to assign tasks and moving lists with the swipe of a finger is effortless. It’s also easy to connect an account to the iOS app. To connect your account, you scan a web-based QR code with your device’s camera. In seconds, you’re logged in. Our experts believe monday’s strength lies in its seamless operation across its different versions.

Multiple Views Make monday.com Shine

monday.com shines thanks to its views. One of the best tools is the dashboard, which is available in the browser and desktop app. The dashboard puts tools, like Gantt charts, kanban boards, workloads and calendars, in one place for easy management. Unfortunately, dashboards cannot be created on mobile devices, but can be viewed.

Depending on the plan you choose, you’ll get access to multiple views within the software, and they all operate just as smoothly on the desktop and mobile versions as they do in the browser. The views and how information is presented make monday.com a leader in task management software. You can read more about the tools and features in our monday.com review .

monday views app

monday.com is a powerful project management application. The feature set is robust and the design is easy on the eyes; the only downside is the pricing. The free and Basic tier (costing $9 per month per user annually) are not competitive. However, the Standard tier — $12 per user per month annually — offers great value. There’s also an advanced $19 Pro tier and an Enterprise plan if needed.

Overall, monday.com is an attractive, feature-packed project management solution. You’ll find that the multiple views; slick web, desktop and mobile apps; and automation and integrations make monday.com easy to use. If you’re still not convinced, monday offers a generous free trial of the software that allows you to see what it can do.

  • Maximum users: 2
  • Minimum users: 3
  • Enterprise-level features.

asana desktop app

More details about Asana:

  • Pricing : Free, $10.99 per month (one-year plan) per user
  • Provider website : asana.com
  • Excellent free plan
  • Easy to use
  • Full-featured desktop app
  • Comparatively expensive
  • iOS app lacks features

When it comes to project management software for Mac and iOS users, Asana is a close second to monday. Asana is a powerful project management app that helps managers oversee multiple projects and teams. The free tier offers space for up to 15 team members, unlimited tasks, and provides enough views and Asana integrations to get you started.

As with other platforms, Asana offers paid tiers that add more robust project management features and admin tools. When we tested Asana, our biggest gripe was just how expensive the paid tiers are compared to its competitors, while not offering anything radically different. You can learn more about the feature sets on offer in our full Asana review .

The native desktop app for Mac computers is identical to the web tool. You’ll find the same features and views, like a kanban board, timelines and calendars, as well as integrations and automations. The mobile app, while pleasant to use with touch, is OK, but its views are limited, and you cannot set up integrations from within it. It’s still handy to use while on the go, though.

Apps Take Asana to Another Level

All good project management software offers integrations, and Asana grants you access to over one hundred apps from the get-go, which is a sizable collection. You’ll find integrations — or apps as Asana calls them — for Slack, Gmail, Zoom, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams and more. If you choose the Business tier, you’ll get access to Adobe Creative Cloud and a few more apps.

You can easily set up integrations and automations from the desktop and web-based versions of Asana, and if you use the iOS app on an iPad or an iPhone, you’ll still trigger the automations you have in place. This level of continuity across multiple platforms makes Asana one of the best tools for Apple iOS and Mac users.

asana desktop integrations

The biggest downside of Asana is its price structure. For small businesses, it’s hard to go wrong with the Asana free plan . The Premium plan — $10.99 per user per month annually — offers more tools and views, but the pricing is steep. The Business tier — $24.99 per user per month annually — is ideal for large companies thanks to its resource planning tools, but it has an even bigger leap in price.

If you’re a business owner looking for a comprehensive suite of tools to track projects, Asana is a solid choice. Our experts found that the colorful user interface is a joy to use, and the integrations, views and team collaboration features are plentiful. We just wish it was a little more affordable. Still, when it comes to Mac project management software, Asana is a gem.

  • Up to 15 users
  • Price is per user. unlimited users, expanded features
  • Price is per user. unlimited users, even more features
  • Custom pricing, advanced security features

wrike desktop app

More details about Wrike:

  • Pricing : Free, $9.80 per month (one-year plan) per user
  • Provider website : wrike.com
  • A good free version
  • Plenty of tools & views
  • Feature rich macOS app
  • Uninspiring user interface
  • The iOS app is barebones
  • Dramatic price jumps

Wrike might not be the most visually appealing project management software ever designed, but it’s still one of the best pieces of project management software for Mac. Wrike is easy to use, feature-packed and relatively affordable. iOS and Mac users who favor function over form will love this project management tool’s desktop and mobile applications.

The free version of Wrike offers a kanban board, task lists, 2GB of storage, several integrations and effective task management tools. However, Wrike shines when you step into the paid tiers, thanks to more integrations, subtasks, Gantt charts, reports and better security options, like two-factor authentication. You can find out more in our complete Wrike review .

After extensive trials with Wrike, we concluded that its Mac app looks and functions the same as the browser version, which makes working in both effortless. The bad news is that the iOS version of Wrike leaves a lot to be desired, due to its limited feature set. You can still manage projects, but don’t expect to dive deep into them while on an iPad or iPhone.

Versatility Is the Name of the Game

Wrike makes task management easy with superb versatility. Thanks to its views, Wrike is equally comfortable dealing with simple tasks as it is dealing with complex projects with many moving components and multiple team members. Wrike has a good kanban tool, and the Gantt chart, subtasks and project blueprint tool options in paid tiers are also top quality.

The views are easy to read and use across multiple devices, especially on an iPad, thanks to the responsive drag-and-drop and pinch-to-zoom actions on the touchscreen. No matter where you use Wrike — a web browser, desktop client or the mobile app — you’ll find that Wrike’s outstanding functionality translates well into each version of the software.

wrike gantt chart ios

Wrike is a robust piece of project management software for Mac and iOS devices. You’ll enjoy using it if you can get past the bland but functional user interface. The Wrike free tier is fine for individuals or very small businesses. However, if you want to manage bigger teams and projects, you’ll need to step up to one of the paid tiers, which dramatically increase in price.

The Team tier — $9.80 per user per month annually — offers Gantt charts, unlimited projects, tasks and subtasks, 50 automations, multiple views and support for up to 25 team members.

The Business plan — $24.80 per user per month — adds cloud-based software, more automations and advanced features. There are also Enterprise and Pinnacle plans. Overall, Wrike is a project management tool worth trying.

  • Unlimited users. Basic features.
  • Price is per user. Plans for 5, 10 and 15 users.
  • Price is per user. No monthly option. Plans for 5 to 200 users.
  • Plans for 5 to an unlimited number of users.

trello desktop app

More details about Trello:

  • Pricing : Free, $5 per month (one-year plan) per user
  • Provider website : trello.com
  • Clean user interface
  • Feature stocked desktop app
  • Great free plan
  • iOS app is basic
  • Questionable privacy policy

Trello is, by far, the best kanban board application available. The only reason why our expert testers placed Trello in the fourth spot is because it only offers a kanban board, whereas the other options listed provide a full suite of project management tools; but wow, what a kanban board it is! Trello is clean, slick, easy to use, offers tons of integrations for free. You can find out more in our Trello review .

The free plan of Trello lets you add as many team members, integrations, automations, projects and lists as you need. Trello also comes packed with well-designed project templates. Trello does offer a few paid plans that add unlimited boards, a mediocre calendar, and advanced security and admin features, but after testing them, we found they do not offer good value for money.

The macOS app makes Trello a great project management tool for Apple users. The app offers everything that the browser version does, including integrations and automation support. It’s also as smooth as butter when in use. However, the iOS application is very basic. While it’s nice to interact with your kanban board via touch, the application offers hardly any features or tools.

Unlimited Power-Ups and Automations

Out of the box, Trello is already a powerful task management tool; however, when you factor in unlimited integrations — known as power-ups in Trello — the usability dial gets cranked to the max. You’ll find integrations with apps that help with time tracking, portfolio management, document management, collaboration features, file sharing, reports and more.

We have to mention task automation here because automations can easily make Trello work for you. For example, Trello can notify a team member on Slack that their project needs attention, and you can automatically share files, perform bulk actions and send emails without lifting a finger. The free plan offers unlimited automations, so you can make the most of them.

trello power ups

Trello is one of the best pieces of Mac project management software and should be considered by teams and businesses of all sizes. The project management app is easy to use, automations are powerful and it has the best representation of the much-beloved kanban board we’ve ever seen. Above all, almost every feature you could possibly need is available on the free plan.

If you need more from Trello, there are premium plans. The Standard plan — $5 per user per month annually — adds unlimited boards and larger file size uploads.

The Premium plan — $10 per user per month annually — adds views, priority support, and admin and security features. Meanwhile, the Enterprise plan — $17.50 per user per month annually — adds security options. The free plan is still best for most, though.

  • Unlimited users, 10 boards, Unlimited power-ups, Unlimited storage
  • Price is per user, Unlimited boards, Custom fields, Invite guests
  • Price is per user, Several new views
  • Price is per user, Advanced admin & security settings

click up list desktop

More details about ClickUp:

  • Pricing : Free, $7 per month (one-year plan) per user
  • Provider website : clickup.com
  • A competitive free plan
  • Lots of features
  • Polished macOS application
  • Not very intuitive software
  • Poor touch support on iOS

Fifth on our list of best project management software for Mac is ClickUp. It offers a huge repertoire of features and is a favorite of software developers (and our in-house experts) thanks to its sprints. The software has a clean interface, time tracking and ClickApps (integrations). You can find out more about the features in our ClickUp review .

However, the price model is what makes ClickUp stand out.

You’ll find that ClickUp offers lots of tools and key features in its free tier ; however, many tools have use limitations. For example, you’ll be able to use the Gantt chart tool so many times per month. As you progress through the paid plans, limitations are removed and new features are added. The pricing is very competitive, which makes ClickUp quite appealing.

The macOS application is stellar. You’ll find all the tools and features you need (depending on your plan), including Gantt Charts, kanban boards, mind maps, tables, workloads and more. You can even implement ClickApps.

However, the iOS app isn’t the best. From our hands-on testing, we noticed that while you can touch items to select them, you cannot move them by dragging, and you only get list and calendar views.

Views Galore Make ClickUp Incredibly Versatile

ClickUp is a project management platform that does many things well. If you like kanban boards, you’ll like the one ClickUp offers. If you prefer lists and tables, ClickUp has you covered. If Gantt charts, timelines, whiteboards, activity and workload views are your thing, you’re in business. However, the stand-out view is the mind map.

If you like to brainstorm or prefer exploded views and subtasks, the mind map view in ClickUp will be right up your alley. The mind map gives you a complete overview of your project and allows you to track every component of it on one screen. The mind map can be as big as you need it, and navigating it is easy thanks to the large work area you’re given. It’s a fantastic tool.

click up mind map desktop

When it comes to pricing, ClickUp is competitive. The Unlimited plan — $7 per user per month annually — adds unlimited storage, integrations, dashboards, Gantt charts and more. For $12 per member per month annually, the Business tier adds the mind map, advanced time tracking and advanced automations.

Compared to other software solutions, you’ll need to spend more time with ClickUp to learn how its many tools work. However, your persistence and time will be rewarded with a versatile app that will serve you well. Pick the plan that suits you and your team, and you’re sure to be satisfied.

  • Basic functionality with some limitations
  • All prices per user

ntask browser list

More details about nTask:

  • Pricing : Free, $3 per month (one-year plan) per user
  • Provider website : ntaskmanager.com
  • Low cost of entry
  • A good set of features
  • Fairly easy to operate
  • The very limited free tier
  • macOS & iOS apps need improvement

nTask is not the prettiest platform, but its versatility makes it a prime choice for project scheduling. The free Basic plan is limited to five team members but offers unlimited workspaces and tasks. You can use integrations, powerful timesheets and time-tracking tools, but you’re limited to list, grid and calendar views. Your money goes far in the paid plans, though.

The project management tool boasts list views, calendars and kanban boards, as well as time, risk and issue tracking. There are collaboration tools, document storage and sharing, milestones, subtasks and advanced reports.

However, like other project management apps, nTask unlocks features and tools at various price points. For a more comprehensive look at nTask’s plan features, check out our nTask review .

nTask’s apps for Macs and iOS devices are adequate, but our firsthand experience with them reveled that they lack some key features, like timesheets, time management and being able to implement integrations. Still, if you’re traveling and need to manage the basics from the road, you can do so quickly, especially on an iPad, where you can swipe, push and pull items in lists and boards efficiently.

Timesheets Are nTask’s Ace in the hole

Many resource management apps offer time management and time tracking via integrations, which is fine. Still, it’s always better when a key feature is found baked into the software. That’s exactly what nTask has done, and they have done it very well. The timesheet tool, which is accessible via the web version of nTask, is powerful yet easy to use.

Each task can be added to a timesheet, and the manager or team member responsible for the job can input how much time has been spent on the activity. This tool makes it easy to see if a task is being neglected or is taking too long. We wish this resource management tool, which is available in every plan, was available on the desktop and mobile apps.

ntask timesheets desktop

Regarding pricing, nTask is competitive. The Premium plan — $3 per month per user annually — gets you everything in the Basic tier plus unlimited projects, Gantt charts, a kanban board, advanced filters, 5GB of file storage, sub-tasks, milestones and more. Step up to the Business plan — $8 per user per month annually — and they add in risk tracking, advanced reports and admin tools, priority support and many other tools.

Overall, nTask is a fine task management platform that provides easy-to-use task lists and other project tools that will help teams plan. nTask is not what we would call good-looking, but our experts determined that the interface is easy to navigate on web, desktop and mobile platforms, and the paid plans offer exceptional value for money.

  • Maximum 5 team members.
  • No minimum or maximum team members.
  • Self-hosted option. 50 team members minimum.

BEST FOR GOAL MANAGEMENT

Smartsheet

$9 CAD per user, per month

(billed annually)

(added cost)

Using PM software like Smartsheet is a good idea for starting a business plan because it includes all the tools you need to collaborate and plan across multiple teams or stakeholders. It’s especially good for real-time goal management. Get your ideas in place, go over market and competitive research from other teammates and finalize everything together.

Smartsheet won’t help you write your business plan, but it does give you a place to compile all the data and then you can use one of its free business plan templates. As you figure out your milestones, you can invite an unlimited number of viewers to see how it’s going. The only downsides are that Smartsheet doesn’t have a native messaging app (you’ll have to use an integration), only commenting is allowed and there’s no free plan.

Paid plans from Smartsheet cost $9 CAD per user, per month, or $33 CAD per user, per month (billed annually for both). The low-priced Pro plan limits you to 10 editors, but the Business plan allows unlimited editors (but it also has a three-user minimum).

Who should use it: Smartsheet lets you make changes in real-time, so it’s a good option for those who are just starting to piece together a plan and looking for a way to manage ideas and goals before finalizing a business plan.

  • Discounts for non-profits available
  • Automations on every plan
  • Popular integrations allowed on low-tier plan
  • 30-day free trial
  • No free plan
  • Only 10 viewers allowed on low-tier plan
  • Three-user minimum on Business plan

BEST FOR FINANCIAL FORECASTING

LivePlan

$15 USD ($20.12 CAD) per month

One of the strongest cases for using LivePlan to create your business plan is its financial forecasting. It isn’t just a single feature, rather it’s a tool that lets you turn your balance sheet and cash flow statements into charts, graphs and what-if situations to help you show possible investors the best- and worst-case scenarios for your business.

There are two plans available: Standard or Premium (there is no free plan). The low-priced plan, which costs $15 USD ($20.12 CAD) per month (billed annually), doesn’t limit your contributors or guests and includes instructions to help you complete a business plan. It even includes financial forecasting features and more than 500 sample plans to get you started.

The Premium plan costs $30 USD ($40.24 CAD) per month (billed annually), but it’s full-featured. You get a milestone planner and industry benchmark data, which can save you research time. Another timesaver: At this plan level, you can integrate QuickBooks or Xero to add your financial data seamlessly.

Who should use it: LivePlan is business plan software that includes prompts and accounting software integrations, making it great for new business owners that want easy financial forecasting.

  • No free trial

BEST FOR ROADMAPPING

Aha!

$59 USD ($79.12 CAD) per user, per month

Every business plan starts with strategy and Aha! makes it easier to map out what you plan to do to get from point A to point Z. Aha! is primarily roadmapping software that product teams use to plan features, products or bug fixes. Any business in any industry can use it to shape ideas and strategy into plans and milestones.

Much like product development, business plans have phases and Aha! is ideal for the first few phases of business planning. Although you won’t find a scorecard feature with Aha! Roadmaps, you can score and prioritize your business vision and goals. Finally, you can present your plan to viewers (stakeholders) before you create your official business plan and secure funding.

There are three plans from which you can choose: Premium at $59 USD ($79.12 CAD) per user, per month; Enterprise at $99 USD ($132.75 CAD) per user, per month; and Enterprise+ at $149 USD ($199.80 CAD) per user, per month, all billed annually. The only reason to upgrade to either Enterprise plan is if you want to add on automation, development tools and custom worksheets and tables.

Who should use it: Aha! Roadmaps is a great tool to help you strategize and get your ideas for your business in one place. You can use the presentation feature to share your business’s roadmap on your way to creating your finalized business plan.

  • User-friendly interface
  • Ability to score and prioritize ideas
  • Share roadmaps with others
  • Expensive for business plan creation
  • Has a bit of a learning curve

A unique feature of Bizplan is it gives you access to Fundable, a crowdfunding platform, on which you can share your business plan to try to generate funding.

BEST FOR IDEATION

IdeaBuddy

Free; $7 CAD per month

IdeaBuddy is a basic business plan tool that lets you start for free, which is great for beginners who aren’t quite ready to create a plan. The idea plan feature is great because it lets you lay out your business plan on one page, giving you an overview. There are built-in sticky notes for brainstorming and custom templates to start you off with a bit of a guide (or just create your own).

Another great feature of IdeaBuddy is the whiteboard, which lets you drag and drop various elements, draw on them and collaborate with others to come up with your perfect business idea. That feature is locked behind the highest tier, so you’ll have to pay $26 CAD per month (billed annually) to use it. However, that plan also gives you up to 10 collaborators and 10 ideas.

Other plans are more limiting: The free plan is for a solopreneur who has a single idea to work on and the Dreamer plan is $7 CAD per month while the Founder plan is $13 CAD per month, both billed annually. The Dreamer plan is also limited to one idea, but you get one collaborator, while the Founder plan gives you up to three ideas and three collaborators. Plus, you’ll get access to the paid plans to export and share your plan with viewers.

Who should use it: IdeaBuddy is just what it sounds like: It’s best for ideation. You can create a full-fledged business plan, but this program is best suited for the very beginning stages of business creation.

  • Free forever plan
  • Affordable paid plans
  • Monthly and annual billing options
  • Easy to use
  • Export to Word, Excel or as PDF

BEST FOR NO-FRILLS BUSINESS PLANNING

iPlanner

$59 USD ($79.12 CAD) for one year

Business plan software doesn’t have to be fancy to be effective, and iPlanner certainly fits that bill. It’s been around since 2007 and it doesn’t appear to have updated its look or functions. The browser-based business planning software gives you a place to build out your business model and a business plan.

There are two different software options from iPlanner: Strategy Designer and -Framework. The Strategy Designer costs $59 USD ($79.12 CAD) for three plans, but it’s a one-time fee for the year. Choose it if you want a more condensed and no-frills kind of business plan. You can export it to Word or as a PDF.

Who should use it: iPlanner is best for those who have created a business plan before and don’t need hand-holding or fancy features.

  • Business modelling option
  • Samples on site for demoing
  • Export to Word or as PDF
  • No free plan or trial
  • Not a lot of guidance
  • Outdated interface

BEST FOR AUTOMATIC BUSINESS PLAN CREATION

Enloop

$11 USD ($14.75 CAD) per month

Enloop is a unique business plan app that generates a business plan for you based on the information you provide. You can edit the text Enloop writes for you to make it more specific or change numbers in your financial forecasts as you see fit. Enloop offers a scorecard that updates as you change things, finish sections and make your business plan overall better.

Then Enloop compares your financial forecasts to industry standards, so you don’t have to do the research. The software shows you up to 16 ratios, such as sales, inventory and payables and then shows you what the average is for your industry as it compares to your financials. Enloop then gives you either a pass or fail so that you can modify your plan before you put anything into play.

Although Enloop doesn’t offer a free plan, there is a free trial for one week so you can see if it’s right for you. The Detailed plan costs $11 USD ($14.75 CAD) per month while the Performance plan is $24 USD ($32.18 CAD) per month, both billed annually. The biggest difference between the two plans is how many financial ratios Enloop analyzes: The Detailed plan only gets three ratios and Performance plan gets 16.

Who should use it: Enloop is best for those who have some experience creating business plans, not necessarily for those who are starting from scratch as there are no brainstorming or strategizing tools included. Use Enloop to create business plans quickly.

  • Three business plans for each tier
  • Generates a business plan automatically
  • Compares your financials to industry standards
  • Seven-day free trial available
  • Scorecards indicate odds of success
  • No messaging team members through app

BEST FOR TEAMS

Business Sorter

$10 USD ($13.41 CAD) per month

When you’re ready to craft your business plan, it can help immensely to have business planning software like Business Sorter. The cloud-based app makes it easy for you to start a plan and kicks off your business planning with a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats). Then, you can follow a guide to build your plan with each section divided by areas. After which, you can choose cards to help steer you toward the right objectives and goals for your business.

You won’t find roadmapping tools in Business Sorter, but the card system keeps you on track (and even gives you goals you may not have considered). As you prioritize goals, you’ll find steps you need to take that guide you to completing your business plan. Every plan allows multiple users, so you can collaborate on what takes precedence.

Plans start at $10 USD ($13.41 CAD) per month, billed annually, and allow you to have three users on board. For 10 users, the Medium plan costs $30 USD ($40.23 CAD) per month, billed annually, and if you need 30 users, the Large Team plan will run you $80 USD ($107.29 CAD) per month, billed annually. It’s one of the most affordable business planning apps for teams.

  • Free trial available
  • Card system helps guide your goal setting
  • Create up to 40 business plans
  • Plans limit user count
  • No messaging in app
  • Very limited integrations

Forbes Advisor carefully considered a variety of software to choose the right business planning apps for this ranking. We compared features, ease of use, costs and collaboration. We ranked each company based on these factors using a 5-star rating system. The highest possible score is 5 out of 5 stars.

Here are the details of the factors we considered:

  • Features: We looked at general and unique features of each app and gave more credit to software that provides better functionality for business planning.
  • Cost: Regardless of your business size, cost is an important factor to consider when you’re adding new software to your tech stack. We awarded a higher score to those that offer free trials, free plans and affordable options.
  • Ease of use: Programs that have a steep learning curve aren’t likely to be adopted by you or your team, so we chose software that’s user-friendly. Drag-and-drop interfaces or guidance through features and tools are helpful for any team.
  • Customer reviews: An important factor for any software is how the general public views the program. We considered other ratings and studied the pros and cons listed by other users of the software to help us with our ranking.

Technically, you don’t need business plan software, but using it can make the entire experience easier and you’ll have better odds of creating a solid plan. You don’t even have to choose software made specifically for business planning—project management software is great for roadmapping and goal management. Aside from looking for software that includes financial forecasting, you’ll want collaboration tools, a user-friendly interface, affordable plans and ways to brainstorm or roadmap for your business idea.

One of the most important sections of any business plan is the financials. If you haven’t already done the research and calculations, look for a business plan app that automatically calculates these numbers for you.

Collaboration is also key if you’re working with a partner, team or consultants. At the very least, look for software that lets you invite viewers to see the work you’re doing, but the best business plan software lets users leave comments or work on a plan in real-time simultaneously.

Ease of use is nearly as important as pricing. You’ll need software you and your team will use without spending too much downtime learning how to use it. And it makes no sense to choose a cost-prohibitive tool for creating a business plan—most of the software Forbes Advisor suggests is appropriate for small business budgets.

Finally, depending on the stage you’re in of business planning, you may want a tool that offers features that make it easy for you to create a roadmap for your business. If you’re in the early stages, these tools can help with brainstorming, prioritizing goals and managing your goals before you finalize your actual business plan.

Most business plan software helps guide you through the creation of a business plan with prompts, suggestions or tips. So, using business plan software is especially helpful for new business owners who don’t know all the sections to include to increase the odds of getting funding or luring a partner to join your operation.

Business plan software can also automate some processes, such as calculations of financials or comparisons of those finances with industry standards. Some business planning apps give you whiteboards or editable cards you can use for brainstorming. Other features may include scorecards to let you know if you’re on the right track or roadmapping tools to give you an overview of your business plan.

The biggest benefit of business plan software is that it helps you organize and prioritize all of your goals so you can more easily analyze and then compile the data you need to create your business plan. After that, you can create your plan from scratch or if you’re using business planning software made specifically for crafting plans, you can piece it all together and then export it as a PDF or to Microsoft Word.

Which business plan software is the best?

Forbes Advisor suggests Wrike, Smartsheet or LivePlan to help you write your business plan. Depending on the stage you’re in of business planning, one tool or another may be better for you.

How do I create my own business plan?

There are several steps you should follow to create a good business plan, but there are different types of plans you can create. Every business plan starts with a strong executive summary and includes your business goals and financial forecasting. Follow a guide on how to create a business plan to ensure you include all the sections needed.

What are the different types of business plans?

There are many types of business plans you can create and the one that makes the most sense for you depends on your situation. A standard business plan is meant for when you need to present to investors or a bank for financial help. A lean plan doesn’t include all the summaries and background information a standard plan does, so it’s more suitable for established business owners. There are also one-page business plans that are more like pitches. You may also run across operational, tactical, strategic and contingency business plans.

Is business plan software secure?

As with most types of software, the best business plan software programs offer many levels of security. When choosing this type of software, you want to look for security features like multifactor authentication (MFA), intrusion detection, the monitoring of user activities, documentation that shows frequent security updates and patches, data encryption and privacy protection.

Download Business Plan Software Online For Mac & Windows

Before one embarks on any new business venture, it is always advisable to have a well-written business plan.

Truthfully, a well-written business plan is invaluable. Whether starting a new business or trying to secure funding to expand an existing one, business plans lay out each step to ensure the greatest return on your time and monetary investments.

Some individuals and firms offer services to write your business plan for you . Yet, good business plan writing software will give you the same research access and tools at a fraction of the cost. You can also work on your plan at your own pace rather than relying on someone else and their timetables.

What To Look Out For In Business Plan Software

When purchasing business plan maker software, it is necessary to check to see if the product supports specific industries rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution.

This support can be either through software specifically designed for that industry or through industry-specific templates and sample plans so one can see the direction of the software and make sure it’s the best for the business one is establishing.

Also, while you can purchase some software in CD-ROM form, many will allow you to download it from the company website or access it online through a cloud-based solution.

Nevertheless, you should know each has advantages, including security measures and quick access.

Types of Plans

The kind of business plan you need depends on your goals.

If one is seeking funding, each plan has specific information and sections that one should include to be considered by serious investors.

The software is designed to help you create a startup business plan, and most also have options for funding and investment plans.

Some business plan writing software includes specific templates, software, or guidance in creating business plans for market strategies, feasibility determination, and growth plans.

Document-Creation Tools

A business plan entails more than just writing down your company name and a few goals. Effective plans include financial projections, advertising strategies, market analysis, and competitor profiles.

Apart from essential word-processing tools such as spellcheck, image importing, and document preview, business plan software programs should also include tools to help you with your plan’s financial and budget aspects.

Look for financial calculators, chart generators, and organizational chart builders.

Step-by-step guidance includes examples of the information investors seek in each section. The ability to import financial information from another program, such as QuickBooks or Excel, is also a valuable tool to have.

Many business plan software is intuitive to use (though some are laid out better and include tutorials and help tabs that make it easier to use). Usually, you can save and print your finished business plan in DOCX and PDF formats, though printing your final plan into a PDF is more secure and preferred.

Guidance & Research Resources

Gathering accurate information is essential when writing a small business plan. Many business planning programs give one access to business statistics and market analysis publications and databases.

Some programs include training for presenting your pitch and a way to track your business progress after the plan is complete and in the implementation stages.

Technical Support

Technical support is there to help you with the program itself.

This support we discuss here differs from research help, which is part of a company’s guidance and research resources for the plan.

There are different support options. You know, telephone support, email assistance, and limited live chat options.

Several programs have social media support and user guides, either online or embedded within the program.

Writing a business plan requires a lot of time and dedication to ensure all necessary information is included and formatted in the best way possible.

Business plan writing software makes creating this critical document easy, with resources to make the final product as good as a professionally written plan but for much less money.

There are various business plan software; let us see some of them :

LivePlan is intuitive, with support tools to help you through each part of the business plan writing process. LivePlan is an exceptional business plan software that includes templates for various industries, so filling in the blanks with your company information is simple.

If you need something more original, LivePlan has guides to ensure the information you supply is complete and in the correct format. It can help with determining feasibility, projecting success, and securing funding.

One ‘other’ side of LivePlan is that It doesn’t have tools to create organizational charts.

QuickPlan has sample plans from successful businesses rather than a generic template.

QuickPlan is a business plan software program with a fundamental interface; however, each program is industry-specific, with the guidance and sections needed for that particular business type.

It has dozens of programs, from construction to food services and consignment shops, each with sample plans and BUSINESS PLAN PDF SAMPLEs to help you get started.

These samples are even based on actual businesses rather than on generic information. The only industries not listed were nonprofit and technology businesses.

QuickPlan specializes in helping you create business plans specific to your particular business and industry; however, there isn’t a lot of help or support beyond writing the plan.

Nevertheless, this program lacks extra resources and guidance tools, such as information on funding or small business tips, to help you beyond creating your business plan.

Elise Williams

The thing about small businesses is that they tend to grow. As our businesses get bigger, though, we need better tools to manage them – otherwise, we spend all of our time on administration, and none of it actually growing the business. That is why we created this guide to the best small business software packages for Mac (High Sierra Compatible) available on the market today – to help you stay productive without falling behind on your paperwork!

Using Mac Small Business Software in General

Before we get to the list, let me tell you 3 things small business software Mac users need to know:

  • Make sure you choose something that will be easy to integrate not just into your devices but your business processes. Change takes time and energy you might not have
  • Do not underestimate the value of accessing your files over an iOS app. This can be a lifesaver, especially in the field
  • Don’t be afraid to test-drive free versions before shelling out for the premium version. This will eliminate a lot of costly mistakes

The Top Small Business Software for Mac Users

1. pdfelement for business.

You doubtless use a lot of PDFs in your business – purchase orders, receipts, invoices, and so on. PDFelement for Business may be one of the best Mac small business software titles going because it gives you a way to create and manage these PDFs all in one place. This little gem was designed around the concept of creating, editing, and sharing PDF business files, and it does its job very, very well.

small business software for mac

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Excellent user interface
  • Allows you to edit text and images
  • Good OCR features
  • Compatible with macOS 10.13 High Sierra

2. Hiveage for Mac

Hiveage is one of the best invoicing tools I’ve ever used, and a piece of small business software Mac users should never be without. As it is cloud-based, it requires little initial investment and can be used across a number of different devices easily. It offers PayPal integration and has a good set of tools for automated billing.

best small business software for mac

  • You can use it for free
  • It is cloud-based, making sharing secure and easy
  • An excellent time tracker is included
  • It makes creating detailed reports very easy

Why Some Hate It:

  • While the basic package is free, you’ll have to pay to use many advanced features

3. Billings Pro for Mac

This is small business software for Mac at its finest. It excels at creating and sending estimates to prospective clients and comes with several pre-generated templates to get you up and running in minutes.

Mac-based small business software that also comes in handy when you want to create ad send cost estimates to new clients. It comes with different templates to make the whole process easier. These templates make invoicing so easy to understand even for the beginner.

small business software mac

  • It costs only $10 per month
  • It offers templates for many different types of businesses
  • Easy to use ‘right out of the box
  • It can be a bit difficult to integrate into iOS if you’re not a ‘power user’

4. Cognito Software MoneyWorks Gold 7

When it comes to small business software for Mac users, MoneyWorks is an excellent choice. It can essentially ‘be’ your finance department. As your business grows and you eventually put more than one person in the account, it can accommodate multiple users easily and effectively.

mac small business software

  • Very user-friendly, with a gentle learning curve
  • Excellent at file sharing
  • Supports multiple users with password protection
  • You’ll have to manage each user individually, which will be cumbersome once your business grows enough

5. Moon Invoice for Mac

Moon invoice is one of my favorite pieces of Mac small business software. As you might have guessed from the name, it excels at invoicing. It also integrates with your iPhone (or any iOS device) with a very nice app. The most useful feature, for me, is the ‘iCloud Sync’ feature, which keeps all of your documents up-to-date across any devices you might be using. This feature alone has saved me more time than you can imagine.

mac small business software

  • iCloud sync is an absolute game-changer
  • Very easy to create and track invoices
  • Several flexible payment options for the paid version
  • The free version is a bit limiting, and you’ll soon outgrow it
  • The rather steep learning curve

Best Personal Finance Software For Mac [2024]

Nick deCourville

  • It’s always a good idea to talk to a financial planner when getting started with finances.
  • Managing finances and filing taxes are not the same thing.
  • Consider your financial goals before purchasing financial software.

Best Finance Software Mac February 2024-Featured

If you’re in need of some of the best personal finance software for Mac in 2024, then consider this the first place you need to look. Managing your finances can be a daunting nightmare, but keeping your money right in this day and age is critical. Let’s take a quick rundown at some of the best ways to manage your money on Mac.

Best Personal Finance Software for Mac Ranked

There are plenty of options for some of the best personal finance software for Macs. Note that this is just a quick overview of each app, as there is simply not enough space for a full review of each one. Think of this guide as your entry into the world of financial software for Mac.

In addition to offering a wide range of financial resources conveniently centralized to one app , Mint also provides tax preparation through a partnership with Intuit TurboTax. This means you have a single app to check and manage all of your finances, but you can also prep and file your taxes with Mint as well. This is one of the best apps currently available, but it includes so many features that one of them is a warning.

mac business plan software

While Mint is practically beloved universally, there is one major downside in that it’s likely to reach the end of its life by March 2024. However, the app was supposed to shut down at the beginning of 2024 and has yet to do so. You’re likely taking a risk by signing up for this app, but many may find the experience to be worth it.

Price: Free

System requirements: internet browser for mac. ipad/ios 15 and/or watchos 6.

System Requirements: Internet

  • One of the most comprehensive financial management apps.
  • Cannot beat the price.
  • Easy to use, great for beginners.
  • Likely shutting down in March 2024.
  • No native Mac app.

2. Credit Sesame

Credit Sesame is a great way to keep up with your credit. In addition to being able to access your credit score for free, Credit Sesame also gets you in touch with some of the best offers for home, auto, and personal lines of credit. Additionally, Credit Sesame gives you updates on your credit accounts, letting you know what actions you need to take.

mac business plan software

However, bear in mind that the free version only gives you access to your VantageScore. This is different from your FICO score, which is what creditors typically use to determine your offers. Bear in mind, that it may not be worth it to pay to gain access to all of your credit scores, though getting a free credit score can help you determine where you stand financially.

Price: Free, but does have premium features

System requirements: internet browser or iphone/ipad.

  • Great for keeping tabs on your credit score and history.
  • Offers free identity protection, valued at $50,000.
  • Can help build credit.
  • Free users only get access to one credit score.
  • Only offers in-browser options for Mac.
  • Other apps offer more expansive features for various areas of finance.

3. Checkbook Pro

With the number one rating in the Finance category for paid apps on the App Store, there’s a reason people turn to Checkbook Pro . While this is the Pro offering of Splasm Software’s Checkbook app , paying the extra five dollars to access all of their features is worth it. If you’re looking to manage your finances and spending habits, Checkbook Pro makes it easy.

Best Finance Software Mac Checkbook Pro

Perhaps the feature that will be most useful to users is the ability to easily create a report of your finances. See where your money is going and how you’re spending across all of your accounts with ease. The only downside is that some folks may be looking for a finance app that goes beyond simple budgeting and management. If you’re looking for something jammed to the brim with features, you may want to keep looking.

Price: One-time fee of $19.99. Basic version $14.99

System requirements: macos 10.11 or later.

  • Top-ranking financial software.
  • Manage and organize your finances through reminders of auto-pay bills.
  • Ability to print checks without using special paper.
  • Users may want more frequent software updates.
  • May not be as robust as some users would like.

If you’re looking for financial software that provides a fantastic interface and experience, Cookie may be for you . For those looking for the “meat and potatoes” of financial planning, you may want to start here. One of the best reasons to go with this ad-free financial software is that it offers syncing to the Cloud. It can also show you where your money is trending over different periods, giving you a broader idea of your spending habits.

Best Finance Software Mac Cookie

Great if you’re trying to budget your money, Cookie is also free but does offer a subscription service. One nice thing about the subscription service is that you can opt to buy out, giving yourself a lifetime license. This means you can try the pro features if you want and then you can purchase a lifetime pass or decide to stick with the free version. It’s good for the basics, but those with thicker portfolios may want to keep looking.

Price: Free. Subscription for premium is $6 a month, $30 per year, or $68 for a lifetime

System requirements: macos 11.0 or later.

  • Great aesthetic with the option to change themes.
  • Features a currency converter.
  • Great privacy features, including automatic blur.
  • Really just for budgeting and financial management.
  • Subscription options may be confusing.
  • May not be for financial beginners.

We took a look at the number one paid app in the App Store, and now let’s take a look at the number one free app. While the app is free, Copilot does require a subscription. However, they do give you a month free, and there’s a reason the app was a 2023 App Store Awards Finalist. What makes Copilot a great financial app is that it puts privacy and security first. Copilot promises the same security you would get from a bank and also refuses to sell your information.

Best Finance Software Mac Copilot

In addition to the privacy tools, Copilot also offers AI-powered insights. This tool helps you categorize your spending better, providing you with better details on where your money is going. Copilot users can also track their investments and customize their alerts so they’re not being harassed with notifications all the time. However, you may want to take a look at reviews on this one, as some users address issues with bugs.

Price: $13 a month or $92 annually

System requirements: macos 12 or later, ipad/ios 15 or later.

  • Offers more tools than many of its competitors.
  • Light Mode and Dark Mode options.
  • May provide some of the best insights into your spending.
  • Requires a subscription.
  • May have syncing issues with some financial accounts.
  • Users on App Store complain about bugs with certain transactions.

There’s a pretty good chance you’ve already heard of this one, as it’s been a mainstay in finances for years. A trusted name in the industry, Quicken looks at your finances not just in the present, but looks to your future as well. One feature that really stands out about this app is that in addition to budgeting and investing, Quicken allows you to pay 12 electronic bills a month directly through the app. If a bill doesn’t take online payments, that’s okay. Quicken can also print and mail up to five checks a month to anyone in the U.S.

mac business plan software

While there are plenty of things to love about Quicken, the way they manage their software may leave a lot to be desired. The company offers several different packages, so you may want to explore your options. If you want extra features such as the Lifetime Planner, which can help you save for your retirement, and “what-if” tools that can help you manage your debt, you may want to take a look at Quicken Classic: Deluxe.

Price: Varies. Quicken offers multiple solutions depending on your needs

System requirements: macos 12 or later.

  • Offers a variety of options to suit an individual’s finances.
  • Top-tier packages include great features for budgeting debt and planning for retirement.
  • Decades of experience in the industry.
  • Software variety may cause confusion for those looking to buy.
  • Not available in the Apple App Store.
  • May not be “cutting-edge” tech for some.

Personally, I like this one because it has a focus on those who are diving into the world of financial planning for the first time. For starters, it’s good to have a plan with finances, and Y NAB seems to understand that . A big feature that helps YNAB stand out is that it offers apps across iPhones, iPads, and Macs that automatically update. You can also share YNAB with up to five people, meaning you can budget with those close to you.

mac business plan software

Like many of the other offerings on this page, YNAB offers a month to give the program a try. Considering how much this one focuses on debt, this would be a good one for those who may feel like they’re in over their head. However, if you’re not so worried about debt, you may want something that focuses more on investing or other areas of financial planning.

Price: $14.99 per month or $99 annually

System requirements: internet browser.

  • Good for those just getting a start in the world of finances.
  • Focuses on debt relief.
  • Available across multiple devices.
  • Those with more financial experience may want something more robust.
  • Doesn’t track bills or investments.
  • May not give the clearest picture of your overall finances.

8. Moneyspire

This one is another for those who are looking for a simple way to track their finances. Think of Moneyspire as the little brother of Quicken: not as many features, but it still knows how to get the job done. This one is good for financial tracking and planning, with options for interactive reports and seeing what future finances you may have.

Best Finance Software Mac Moneyspire

While Moneyspire is good, some may find the UI to be unappealing. However, those who are looking for something for a small business may want to consider this one over the others. Offering a family plan/team plan does push this one ahead of the competition, but those looking after themselves may want to consider their options.

Price: One-time price of $69.99 for Standard (optional $39.99 family plan) or $99.99 for Pro with Invoicing (optional $69.99 team plan). Though requires a new license with each upgrade to the app

System requirements: macos 10.10 or later. ipad/ios 11 or later.

  • Doesn’t require a subscription.
  • Offers cloud syncing and bank account linking.
  • May be more robust for those running a small business.
  • Other apps may offer more.
  • UI could use some work.
  • May need to purchase again with an update (if you want the upgrades).

9. Moneydance

Moneydance covers a lot of your bill payments and online banking, investing, and budget tracking, but it does with your privacy at the forefront. Refusing to even take analytics on your data, Moneydance also offers end-to-end encryption when syncing over the cloud, and personal encryption on your device. What I really like about this one is that it also provides a mobile version, meaning you can track your finances on the go.

Best Finance Software Mac Moneydance

While this one can be great, some users within the Apple App Store do note of syncing issues, with one user complaining they didn’t learn their bank wasn’t supported until after the fact. Be sure to look at all the details before checking out this one, but I think it’s a good buy for the price.

Price: $69.99

  • Offers mobile version.
  • Good for beginners and those with experience.
  • Pleasing UI.
  • May have some syncing issues.
  • Goes long periods without updates.

So, Which One Works Best?

You may not like this answer, but it really depends on what you need to do with your finances. If you’re planning more for investing, Copilot of Quicken may be for you. If you’re worried more about debt relief, you may want to consider YNAB. Finances are unique to each individual, so consider what you’re looking for in finance software.

At the end of the day, your finances are most important to you. Consider this list and do your due diligence before taking the plunge on software. You’ve already made the right decision by making the first step, there’s no need to rush a decision.

Why Does Personal Finance Matter?

Personal finances matter because some of the best freedom is financial freedom. Knowing where your money is going and what’s happening with it can help prevent future emergencies and ensure everything looks brighter and brighter. Taking care of your finances now ensures you’re not taking care of them later. This is why I stress the importance of researching deeper into many of these applications; time spent now is money earned later.

Best for flexibility

Notion

Cheapest paid plan (billed monthly)

Number of users, number of projects/tasks, what you should know.

Notion is a versatile task management platform that gives you a high degree of control and customization even on its free plan. With an abundance of views and formats, including Kanban boards, Gantt charts, calendar views and to-do lists, it offers users multiple ways to track and organize projects. You can also make use of thousands of templates built by Notion and its users, catering to an array of health and fitness, work and office and day-to-day home management needs.

You won’t need to pay anything to get unlimited pages and workflows as an individual, but you’ll need to upgrade to give multiple users full functionality. While you can upload unlimited files on the free plan, you’ll be limited to 5 MB per file, as well as a seven-day history and one synced database.

We’d recommend it if you want to use one platform to manage a variety of project and task types with flexible views and displays; it’s particularly good for content creators.

Pros and cons

  • Multiple views, including Kanban boards, Gantt charts and to-do lists.
  • Thousands of versatile templates for things like health and fitness, work and home.
  • Free version offers individuals unlimited pages and workflows.
  • Custom automation features only available on paid plans.
  • Maximum file upload of 5 MB on free plan.
  • Limited admin and security features on free plan.

Best for customization

ClickUp

ClickUp’s free platform gives you a highly capable and customizable task management platform with an unlimited number of tasks and members. It also offers 24/7 customer service on all plans. You’ll be able to view tasks in unlimited lists, boards and calendars, but you’ll only get 60 uses of Gantt charts, timelines and workloads.

The free plan also allows custom statuses and up to 20 custom task types, as well as other useful features like multiple assignees, checklists, dependencies and a basic custom field manager. However, you’ll only be able to create five “spaces” as part of the free plan — unlimited spaces are only available on paid plans. There are also no time-tracking features and very limited other reporting capabilities.

  • Free version offers unlimited free plan members and tasks.
  • A range of views, including Kanban boards and Gantt charts.
  • 24/7 customer support on all plans.
  • Limits on how many views, custom fields and workloads you can use.
  • No time tracking features.
  • Only five ‘spaces’ on free plan.

Best for automation

Trello

While Trello’s free platform only offers its Kanban-style board view, its two main highlights are its automation services and unlimited power-ups. With its Butler automation, you’ll be able to create rules, buttons and commands, and repetitive actions are recognized with suggested automations that help increase productivity. Third-party apps you can integrate include Slack, Jira, Gmail, Microsoft Teams and Google Drive.

You’ll be limited to 10 MB file uploads and only 10 boards per workspace, though with unlimited storage and workspaces for all plans, this isn’t too restrictive. It’s not ideal if you want to see projects and tasks in calendar or timeline views, but as a basic task manager with smart automation tools, it can be a useful platform for individuals and small businesses.

  • Very straightforward and easy to use.
  • Built-in automation features, including an automation bot called Butler.
  • Unlimited power-up feature lets you integrate third-party apps.
  • File uploads are limited to 10 MB per file.
  • You only get up to 10 boards per workspace.
  • Limited view options.

Best for collaboration

Hive

Hive comes with its own native communication tools, allowing for straightforward collaboration with up to 10 workspace members on its free plan. As a task manager, it’s fairly capable, offering unlimited tasks and subtasks as well as multiple views such as Kanban, Gantt, calendars and tables. However, you’ll only get two pages and 100 workflows, and while Kanban views are unlimited, the free plan only offers 100 uses of Gantt, calendar and table views.

Your ability to customize projects and tasks will also be fairly restricted with no custom fields or labels, and your storage limit on the free plan will be 200 MB overall. Its free plan also comes without a few other features, such as AI assists, custom dashboards and analytics. We’d recommend it as a simple free task manager for small teams working together that will benefit from its native collaborative tools.

  • Native collaboration and communication tools.
  • Multiple views and layouts.
  • Unlimited tasks and sub-tasks.
  • 200 MB storage limit.
  • 10 projects and two pages on free plan.
  • No custom project fields or task labels.

Best for startups using Zoho

Zoho projects.

Zoho Projects

Zoho offers a project manager as part of its larger suite of tools and products, offering a free version for up to three users as well as a 10-day free trial on its paid plans. You’ll be able to manage two projects, create feeds, share documents and custom statuses and set up task dependencies within projects. It’s particularly useful for startups already making use of other Zoho products like CRM, Meeting and Sprints, all of which integrate into the free platform.

You can also use third-party app integrations for Microsoft Teams and Office 365, Slack, Dropbox, Zendesk and Zapier. However, there are some significant limitations to the free version, including limited customization — you can’t create custom fields or views, and there are only basic reporting capabilities.

  • Integrates with Zoho CRM, Meeting and Sprints.
  • Straightforward and easy to use.
  • Offers useful core features, including document sharing, subtasks and custom statuses.
  • Only three users and two projects on free plan.
  • No Gantt charts, custom views, time tracking or custom fields.

Best for client task management

Teamwork

Teamwork will be particularly useful for agencies needing to manage client tasks, as it comes with built-in billable time-tracking features and estimated time management. It also offers client-level insights and client-company management, though you’ll only get client users with premium paid plans. With Teamwork, you’ll also get a range of automation features, including automatic Slack updates, HubSpot deals and Microsoft Teams messages.

It does have drawbacks in the shape of limited reporting capabilities — while all plans come with a dashboard, only premium paid plans offer reports on status, portfolio health, time, utilization and profitability. You also won’t have any phone, live chat or email support options on its free plan.

  • Billable time-tracking and invoicing features useful for agencies.
  • Client views and management features.
  • Wide range of automation features.
  • No phone, live chat or email support.
  • Limited reporting and customization options.
  • No client users on free plan.

Best for individuals and freelancers

Monday

Monday is a popular task management platform with businesses worldwide, but we’d recommend its free plan specifically for individuals and freelancers managing their businesses. It offers a straightforward Kanban interface only, with over 200 templates available, so you’ll be able to create up to three boards with two users and unlimited documents.

However, Monday’s free plan is missing a number of wider features like timeline, Gantt and calendar views, as well as offering no integrations or automations. It’s a relatively simplistic platform compared to others, so we’d recommend it more for individuals than teams that will need more advanced collaboration and reporting capabilities.

  • Over 200 templates available.
  • Apps for iOS and Android.
  • Intuitive and easy to use interface.
  • No integrations on free version.
  • Only offers Kanban view.

Best for complex tasks

Asana

We’d recommend Asana’s powerful platform as an ideal choice for small businesses managing complex tasks or projects with plenty of moving parts. With unlimited tasks, projects, file storage, assignees and messages alongside multiple views such as boards, calendars and lists all included on its free plan, it’s a capable piece of software. You’ll also have access to over 100 free third-party integrations such as Microsoft Teams, Adobe Creative Cloud, Okta and Tableau.

However, you won’t be able to use timelines, Gantt views, goals or portfolios with the free plan, nor time-tracking, workflows or various automation features. The free plan is also fairly limited when it comes to reporting, with only status updates and CSV and PDF exports available.

  • Unlimited project management essential features.
  • Multiple views available.
  • Over 100 free integrations.
  • Limited reporting features.
  • No 24/7 support.

Best for app building

Podio

Podio offers a unique solution for businesses that will benefit from building their own customized project management apps to suit their specific needs. As well as the ability to design a bespoke task manager for your team, you’ll have access to hundreds of user-created apps online. It allows you to keep all important aspects of your business and projects in one central place, depending on the requirements of you and your team.

However, its free version is limited in the other features it offers — including the number of items and client users you can support. It also doesn’t offer automated workflows or visual reports, so keep this in mind if you’re considering Podio.

  • You can build your own customizable apps for project management.
  • You’ll also have access to hundreds of pre-made apps.
  • Live chat support available.
  • Limited features on the free plan.
  • Takes a while to set up and customize to your exact specifications.

Best for scaling up

GoodDay

With a robust set of features and capabilities as well as relatively affordable price plans for upgrading, we’d recommend GoodDay for businesses looking to scale up their operations. Its free version is already quite powerful, offering unlimited projects and tasks for up to 15 users, with views including lists, boards, tables, calendars, event summaries and portfolios. You can customize views, priorities, workflows and statuses, as well as set up dependencies, reminders and to-do lists.

Other customization options are only available on paid plans, such as task, project and user fields, as well as task types and IDs. Additionally, many security features and all CRM features are only available when you upgrade, but with the next price plan up only costing $6 per month, it’s an affordable choice for scaling up.

  • Unlimited projects and tasks.
  • Unlimited views, with most available on free plan.
  • Powerful features for big businesses with affordable plans for scaling up.
  • Many customization options unavailable on free plan.
  • No finance, time tracking, chats or automation.

Best task management software comparison

Methodology

We extensively research the key competitors within an industry to determine the best products and services for your business. Our experts identify the factors that matter most to business owners, including pricing, features and customer support, to ensure that our recommendations offer well-rounded products that will meet the needs of various small businesses.

We collect extensive data to narrow our best list to reputable, easy-to-use products with stand-out features at a reasonable price point. And we look at user reviews to ensure that business owners like you are satisfied with our top picks’ services. We use the same rubric to assess companies within a particular space so you can confidently follow our blueprint to the best free task management software.

The best task management software has positive user reviews on customer review sites and app stores. Task management software companies should provide customers with fast and reliable support. Using a combination of phone support, live chat and knowledge bases, customers should be able to quickly resolve issues 24/7.

Task management software should have role assignment features, timelines and dependencies. It should also allow businesses to use customizable templates, track expenses and track milestones.

And the best task management software should offer client access, billing and invoice capabilities and budgeting features.

What is task management software and how does it work?

Task management software is a digital tool you can use as an individual or a business to manage, organize and prioritize tasks. While levels of features and capabilities will vary between platforms, many also offer the ability to communicate between team members, share files and updates and track progress toward objectives.

You’ll be able to use task management software to create and assign tasks, set deadlines, allocate resources and allow for collaboration between colleagues. These tools can help you and your business increase productivity and efficiency. However, it’s important to be aware of how complex your needs are.

Some task management programs can be complex and could end up reducing your productivity and organization, which is why it’s so important to find the right platform for your needs.

Benefits of free task management software

Using task management software can offer a number of benefits for individuals and businesses, including:

  • Free forever: A good free task management software will offer unlimited projects or workflows without any extra costs — not just a free trial before you have to pay.
  • Productivity: Task management platforms can increase your team’s productivity through automation, progress tracking and reporting, saving time on repetitive tasks.
  • Centralized workflow: You can use task management software to keep all workflows centralized, allowing easy access for all team members and collaborators to stay updated and informed.
  • Collaboration: You’ll be able to clearly assign roles and allocate resources on projects and tasks to different team members, and many platforms also allow team members to work together and communicate.
  • Manage big projects: Complex and lengthy projects can be broken down into separate tasks and workflows with multiple teams and team members.
  • Remote workers: If you rely on remote workers or freelancers, many task management platforms allow all team members to collaborate online from any location.

Who needs task management software?

Task management software can prove useful for a variety of individuals and businesses. You might be a freelancer with a number of client tasks to manage or a hobbyist running a side hustle — in which case, a free task manager will be ideal.

Likewise, small teams and businesses can also benefit from using task management software to organize and track workflow progress for team projects. A free plan or trial period offers a great way to try out different platforms and products so you can find one that suits your needs best before committing to a paid plan with more features and capabilities required by your business.

How to choose the best task management software

Choosing the best free task management software for your business means considering a range of factors and how each of these will best suit your needs. You will need to think about the core features offered by each platform, as well as whether it plugs into any existing software you have and how easy and intuitive it is to use.

Additionally, you should look into the customer support options each platform offers, as this will be crucial in case things go wrong and your work is at risk.

Key features to look for

Levels of complexity and customization will vary between platforms, but in general, you should look out for the following features as part of your task management software:

  • Sub-tasks: Key to keeping big projects organized, task managers should allow you to split tasks and assign different deadlines and workers to each sub-task.
  • Views and visualizations: You should also be able to see your tasks and projects in different views, like Kanban dashboards or Gantt charts. You may find these to be limited in free versions of some platforms, so check price plans to ensure you’re getting what you need.
  • Integration: If you have any existing software or hardware in use for your business, such as finance and accounting apps, design tools or communication platforms, it’s worth seeing if these will plug into the task management software you want. It helps keep everything synchronized and centralized.
  • Tracking and reporting: Your task manager should also allow you to track task and project progress against deadlines and objectives, as well as generate reports.
  • Automation: Some platforms will even offer automation services that let you set up automatic tracking and reporting.
  • Collaboration: Lastly, if you’re managing a team’s workload, it’s vital they can work together, so look for task management software that allows for communication and role delegation.

Ease of use

Some task management tools will be relatively simple and easy to use, with intuitive drag-and-drop interfaces that allow for straightforward organization. However, others offer more complex capabilities, including multiple views like Gantt charts, calendars, lists and galleries, automated reporting and collaboration between multiple team members.

Consider what you’ll need the software for, how many people and tasks you’ll be managing and what kind of insights you’ll want when making your choice.

Security

You should also factor in any security requirements you might have, especially if you’re a big organization or you use third-party apps, providers or even freelancers. Being able to control access on multiple levels may be particularly important. Additionally, consider things like two-factor authentication, secure sharing and data protection when choosing platforms.

Customer service

If something goes wrong with your task manager, it can affect your business’s ability to complete projects and assure stakeholders of progress. Customer service is a key part of being able to resolve issues, so look for providers that offer both round-the-clock availability and instant contact by phone or live chat as a priority.

How much does task management software cost?

When looking for free task management software, consider whether it’s truly free forever — meaning you’ll have access to all the features on the free plan forever without having to pay.

While this might mean many advanced features are hidden behind paywalls, you’ll at least be able to rely on the software for your basic needs without restriction. This is in contrast to free trials that often give you access to the entire platform for a limited time, after which you won’t be able to use it without paying.

If you’re looking to try a free plan in order to get a feel for a specific task management software before committing to a paid plan, you’ll likely be more on the lookout for usability as well as scalability. Consider which paid plans offer the most bang for your buck to narrow down your options, but focus on which free software feels the most natural to use for your business.

You may find that some software platforms offer prices on a per-user basis while others offer a set number of users for each plan. Others may even have a minimum-user requirement, so if they charge a set price per user and require at least three users, you’ll need to pay three times the price you see given as a minimum.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

The best free task management software will depend entirely on your needs and requirements as an individual or business. ClickUp and Notion both offer great customization features, with Notion especially good for content creators.

Paid task management software plans offer a range of extra benefits, including more users or projects, additional features and advanced integrations and security. These will often be more useful for bigger teams and companies managing complex projects with multiple moving parts and stakeholders that need to be kept informed.

When prioritizing tasks in project management, you should consider the resources available, any dependencies on the task being completed and the urgency of the request.

Task management software lets you manage multiple tasks at work by allowing you to create, organize and assign tasks, set deadlines, track progress and, if required, add sub-tasks. All tasks are kept in one place and accessible for anyone who needs to see them, often in digestible formats like calendars, boards and timelines.

Improving task management skills will require you to be disciplined and attentive to detail in order to get the best from task management software and boost your productivity. You should:

  • Focus on prioritizing tasks on your to-do list.
  • Create a manageable schedule for delivery with realistic deadlines.
  • Ensure you’re communicating with stakeholders to keep everyone on the same page.

The best software will make this easy and help you manage your workload efficiently and effectively — but it’s made even easier when you know you’ve picked the right task management software for your requirements.

Create a form in Word that users can complete or print

In Word, you can create a form that others can fill out and save or print.  To do this, you will start with baseline content in a document, potentially via a form template.  Then you can add content controls for elements such as check boxes, text boxes, date pickers, and drop-down lists. Optionally, these content controls can be linked to database information.  Following are the recommended action steps in sequence.

Show the Developer tab

In Word, be sure you have the Developer tab displayed in the ribbon.  (See how here:  Show the developer tab .)

Open a template or a blank document on which to base the form

You can start with a template or just start from scratch with a blank document.

Start with a form template

Go to File > New .

In the  Search for online templates  field, type  Forms or the kind of form you want. Then press Enter .

In the displayed results, right-click any item, then select  Create.

Note:  You can print a form that was created via content controls. However, the boxes around the content controls will not print.

If you want to get one for cheap and you don't mind going for an older model, you should take advantage of Best Buy's $230 discount for the Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ with Type Cover, which brings the bundle's price down to $700 from $930. We're not sure when the offer expires though, so it's highly recommended that you purchase it now so that you don't miss out.

Why you should buy the Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ with Type Cover The latest version of Microsoft's Surface Pro devices is the Microsoft Surface Pro 9, but even with the nearly two-year gap, the Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ will still prove to be a dependable device for daily use. A mid-cycle upgrade of the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, the Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ features improved components with the 11th-generation Intel Core i3 processor and 8GB of RAM. The device is powered by Windows 11 Home, as expected, with the operating system pre-installed in its 128GB SSD that will provide ample space for your apps and files.

Today is the day we've all been waiting for, and as the Black Friday deals keep rolling out, people are scooping up laptops left and right. To complement all of the Black Friday laptop deals, Best Buy is offering an incredible deal on Microsoft Office 2021 Home & Student Edition. Originally priced at $150, you can currently purchase a lifetime license today for only $100, saving you $50, or 33%, off this must-have productivity software package. This deal is one of the Best Buy Black Friday deals you definitely won't want to miss, especially if you've got students or someone who works from home on your 2022 holiday shopping list.

This deal is without a doubt one of the best Microsoft Office deals we've seen all year. Microsoft Office is the industry standard when it comes to productivity software and that has been the case for decades. As part of this software package, you'll gain lifetime access to the essential Microsoft Office classics: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. The one-time purchase comes with one license that can be installed on one device, but can be transferred to another device should you decide to upgrade your computer in the future.

These days, even just a small lapse in judgment online can result in some serious repercussions. From having your accounts hacked or money stolen to your total identity taken over by nefarious actors, there's a lot that could happen and so much to manage. You need a reliable tool that can help protect all of these facets of your digital life, but also one that's not going to empty your wallet so soon after the holidays. And so we come to an excellent solution, McAfee's Total Protection suite. It includes a premium antivirus, identity protection service, and a secure VPN for browsing the web safely and anonymously.

Want to know the best part? McAfee is offering up to $100 off Total Protection right now, and it's the perfect time to bolster your cybersecurity. We'll dig into how it all works in more detail below, but you should also know that comes with multi-device compatibility and protection for your family -- a year's subscription offers coverage for up to 10 devices, or an unlimited number of devices for a premium, it's your choice.
