The number of remote opportunities continues to increase.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to work remotely, there’s a good chance you can now find a job that fits your needs. According to a recent Hiring Lab study of job postings on Indeed, there were nearly three times more listings for work from home slots in 2022 than there were in 2019.

Older adults could benefit directly from this boom in remote work. Their skills and experience give them the ability to operate effectively and independently outside the office. And the flexibility of working from home offers an appealing pathway toward eventual retirement.

With many businesses switching to remote work during the pandemic, “virtual assistants” have seen an explosion in demand recently. In addition to the positions listed on the AARP Job Board, you can also find gig work as an administrative assistant through sites such as Upwork and FlexJobs, though some of these portals charge fees to use their services.

10 Fully-Remote Jobs That Pay $200,000 a Year or More

Before the pandemic, getting a high-paying remote job was a little like finding a unicorn. However, times have changed significantly, and employers are much more willing to allow high-performing employees to work from home.

We scoured online job boards for companies hiring remote workers and offering $100 an hour or more (the equivalent of a $200,000 full-time salary). Here are just a few ideas to get you thinking about the possibilities.

1. Benefits Analyst

Potential Salary: $120 per hour

A benefits analyst is a specialized financial role responsible for maintaining a company’s health, retirement, and other benefits plans. As with many office-based finance jobs, this position is easily translatable to a fully-remote role.

One position we found was offering a one-year contract position at $120 per hour. It requires 5-7 years of experience as a benefits analyst, with specific experience using Workday, ADP, and the Fidelity platform for 401k recordkeeping.

2. Product Marketer

Potential Salary: $100 per hour

A product marketer is responsible for creating and maintaining an overarching marketing strategy to grow sales of a specific product or line of products. This could be anything from hair care products to highly specialized software solutions.

One company, Vaco, is looking for product marketers for a nine-month contract position that pays $100 per hour. This position would be responsible for planning and executing marketing campaigns, developing and monitoring marketing metrics, tracking budgets, and making recommendations to improve the performance of sales and customer acquisition.

3. Freelance Interpreter

Potential Salary: $100 per hour and up

Are you highly fluent in English and another language? You can earn a significant salary as a freelance interpreter working with multinational corporations to help translate across languages and cultures.

One position available noted a starting salary of $100 per hour and up and required 1-2 years of experience in interpreting plus past work in international events or high-level bilateral meetings.

4. Recruiter

Potential Salary: $100 – $250 per hour

As a remote search consultant/recruiter, you would be responsible for finding talented employees and matching them with companies looking for the right skill sets. While it is a commission-based job, the company notes that its top producers earn between $200,000 and $550,000 per year.

Since the job is fully-remote, you would be establishing relationships over the phone and negotiating with both potential employees and employers to find the right fit.

5. Software Developer

Potential Salary: $90 – $120 per hour

Software development has always been on the cutting edge of the work-from-home trend, and now there are even more opportunities in the field to work entirely remotely .

Whether you are a programmer, back-end developer, front-end developer, or more, there are thousands of remote jobs available that will fit your skill set. One job we found was a contract position to help develop a fin-tech platform – adding new product features and maintaining the core application. Some prior experience is required, and the job pays between $90 and $120 per hour with full benefits.

6. Telehealth Physician

Potential Salary: $100 – $130 per hour

Some careers don’t translate well to working from home; until recently, the medical field has been one of them. However, with the rise of Zoom and remote telehealth, doctors, nurses, and physician’s assistants can now join the work-from-home ranks.

One telehealth provider, STA, offers full-time and part-time positions with a salary of $100 – $130 per hour. If you are an MD, DO, NP, or PA with a valid state license, you can help patients via videoconferencing with a full range of primary care services.

7. Inside Sales Representative

Potential Salary: $40 – $115 per hour

Sales has always been a career that can offer a  high income with no college degree  required. An inside sales position follows up with leads online or over the phone from the comfort of their own home.

While inside sales careers exist in almost any industry imaginable, one we found online was with a medical laser treatment company. The job listing notes that average sales reps take home $7,000 – $15,000 a month, and top sellers can make over $20,000 per month. The position includes full healthcare and retirement benefits. The job requires 3-4 years of sales experience, strong negotiating skills, and a self-motivated personality.

8. Marketing Analytics

Potential Salary: $100 – $150 per hour

For those with a background in data science and analytics, opportunities abound for remote work positions. For example, Zillow listed an open requisition for a fully-remote Director of Marketing Analytics with a salary between $200,000 and $320,000 per year.

What is marketing analytics exactly? This position is responsible for turning mountains of data into usable metrics and strategic recommendations to grow the business and attract more customers. According to the job listing, the ideal candidate is “a creative and innovative problem solver and storyteller with data, comfortable with helping partners think and solve difficult business challenges.”

9. Freelance Publicist

Potential Salary: $50 – $200 per hour

Freelance publicists work on a contract basis and can earn $50 – 200 per hour with the right skills. Publicists are responsible for creating communication plans for clients, pitching stories to media outlets, and arranging for publicity opportunities.

Publicists can work with clients in all kinds of different industries, including tech, finance, lifestyle, and more. To earn on the higher end of the range, you would need excellent writing skills and experience working as a publicist in the industry in which you’re interested. Even on the low end, this job pays $100k a year .

10. Senior Producer

Potential Salary: $118 per hour

The Mom Project is looking for a senior producer on a contract basis. This position pays $118 per hour and would work with art directors, designers, copywriters, marketers, and more to develop original video content.

As a senior producer, you would need a background in marketing or journalism and some experience in video production. According to the job listing, you would manage the entire creative production process, from ideation to content delivery.

Consider these part-time jobs for seniors at home.

If you’re a retired senior citizen, you may be interested in earning some extra money with a part-time job – without leaving your home.

And why not? Remote work is more popular than ever. And you may feel like, despite being retired, you have plenty of energy to work.

Finding a part-time job that you can do from home when you’re retired depends on your own experiences and background. Read on for a list of part-time remote jobs for seniors. Some of these suggestions may give you ideas or help you brainstorm your way into the right part-time career at home.

• Teaching out of your home.
• Graphic design.
• Bookkeeping.
• Virtual assistant.
• Consultant.
• Sewing and artwork.
• Customer service representative.
• Appliance repair.
• Proofreading.
• Transcriptionist.

Online Teaching

If you worked as a teacher or have a degree in education , helping students virtually may be a natural fit. The typical hourly rate varies by area of expertise, and you could earn considerably more by tutoring in specialized areas such as STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and math – or professional test prep. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for tutors was $36,680 in 2022.

Of course, there’s the knotty question of how to become an online teacher. There are online platforms where instructors can create classes such as Udemy.com. The appeal of setting up a class on an educational website is that it might be easier to find students that way. On the other hand, if you’re plugged in on social media, you could start with a circle of your family and friends. If you want to tutor math, for instance, let everybody know you’re open for business and start from there.

Teaching Out of Your Home

Tutoring or teaching out of your home is like teaching online, but you get to work one-on-one with people. You may want to contact your local government to see if you’ll need a permit to run your tutoring business.

What you teach will depend on your expertise. “Seniors with musical expertise can impart their knowledge through teaching,” says Wil Thomas, an editor at Seniors Bulletin Canada, a product website aimed at seniors and caregivers.

You could pair your in-home business with an online tutoring shop. “Seniors can set up a space in their home for teaching or they can utilize video conferencing tools like Zoom, Skype or FaceTime, where seniors can offer lessons to students anywhere in the world,” Thomas says.

Graphic Design

If you are schooled in computers and art, you might work as a graphic designer , creating layouts and infographics for websites and blogs.

If you feel that you need training, you can look online for certification first. You may also need to show potential clients a portfolio of your work. The median pay for graphic designers is $27.88 an hour, according to the BLS.

Bookkeeping

Bookkeepers help businesses manage accounts and payroll. Bookkeeping can usually be done on a part-time or full-time basis, depending on the company’s needs.

Previous experience with payroll, account reconciliation, auditing, record keeping and related work is usually required. The typical pay is a median of $22.05 an hour.

Virtual Assistant

Virtual assistants carry out administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, making phone calls, arranging travel plans and managing email accounts. This job works best for strong communicators who thrive on organization. While the median hourly pay for this type of work is $21.19, you could earn more if you specialize in certain areas and tasks.

You can use your background and experience to help companies or groups of employees overcome obstacles, set goals and lay a path for the future. You may even be able to do consulting work for your former employer. The average salary for a consultant is about $45.81 an hour.

If you have a background in nutrition or fitness, you might enjoy helping others work toward achieving wellness goals. Other types of experience, such as financial or counseling backgrounds, can be applied to coaching as well. You can build your own website to market your coaching services or join a company that offers online coaching.

“I see many seniors take coaching – or consulting roles – that they can do part-time,” says Kelly O’Connor, an elder care consultant based out of Denver. “Leveraging their wisdom and experience can create a beneficial package to offer employers.”

The average hourly wage varies based on the expertise of the coach – and how many clients you manage to get.

If you’re interested in helping people get important papers signed and turned into legal documents, this could be right up your alley.

“One of the jobs I think is most fun is an entrepreneurial venture – being a notary public,” O’Connor says. “Seniors are able to notarize loan documents, power of attorneys and other legal documents.”

You'll need to undergo training and certification to work as a notary. Also, if you want to work out of your home, you would have to be comfortable with people coming into your home.

Many of the retired notary publics O’Connor has encountered “are traveling to senior living communities, which is of great service to older adults who don’t get out much.”

Sewing and Artwork

If you love stitching and crafting, you could put your goods for sale online at shops like Etsy. Other sites such as Facebook Marketplace, Amazon Handmade and eBay might provide opportunities to sell homemade goods. If painting and drawing are your passions and you want to sell from your collection, Fine Art America and Society6 serve as artwork marketplaces. The amount you’ll make will depend on what and how much you sell.

Customer Service Representative

Customer service representatives can expect to answer the phone and respond to customer emails. You’ll help customers solve problems and answer questions about products or services. The median wage for a customer service representative is $18.16 per hour.

Proofreading

If you love to read and have a careful eye for detail, you may be able to proofread documents to spot grammatical errors or spelling mistakes. You could check on job boards to learn about available jobs. The average wage for a proofreader is $23.45 an hour.

That said, all industries are different, and some have deeper pockets than others. The hourly mean wage for a proofreader for a publishing house is $19.04; the hourly mean wage for an advertising firm is $33.87.

If you worked as a journalist or in the publishing industry, becoming a freelancer may be a smooth transition. If you had a different career but enjoyed writing and always felt you were good at it, you may want to consider giving it a try.

“Platforms like Upwork and Fiverr offer a convenient means for these seniors to showcase and monetize their skills from the comfort of their home,” Thomas says.

People can make it sound easier to jump into than it is, but if you start small and get some writing gigs behind you, soon you may find yourself building a career.

According to the BLS statistics, pay is a median of $35.17 an hour. The pay range often depends on experience.

Transcriptionist

Those with excellent typing skills may be able to earn some extra income by transcribing recorded messages. This job can be an especially good fit if you have a background in an industry that frequently requires transcription services. The pay scale for this type of work depends on the industry. Medical transcriptionists, for example, typically make $16.70 hour.

Why the golden age of remote work may be coming to an end

Finding fully remote work is getting challenging. ​​New research from Indeed found that job postings are declining faster in metropolitan areas where many jobs can be done remotely.

"Some of the pushback remote work is driven by concerns about productivity," said Kory Kantenga, senior economist at LinkedIn. "There have been some experimental studies that show that there are some productivity impacts, potentially from remote work. But those studies are also experiments, right? It's unclear how they apply to the broader labor force."

During the pandemic, remote work became the darling of the corporate world, and companies going fully remote became the new normal. The U.S. Census Bureau found that the number of people working primarily from home tripled from 2019 to 2021.

"Remote work was thrust upon us basically by the pandemic," said Nicholas Bloom, professor of economics at Stanford University. "Before the pandemic, remote work was pretty rare. All managers and professionals were basically fully remote for much of 2020. And then it turned out it's worked really well."

As the world began to open up, though, corporate America shifted its stance on remote work. Some companies have even threatened to fire workers who don't return to the office for a certain number of days.

"The laptop class is living in la la land," Tesla CEO Elon Musk told CNBC's David Faber in a sit-down interview in May 2023. "It's messed up to assume they have to go to work, but you don't. It's not just a productivity issue. It's morally wrong."
