9 Transcription Jobs That Pay You to Type Audio to Text

Our readers always come first.

The content on DollarSprout includes links to our advertising partners. When you read our content and click on one of our partners’ links, and then decide to complete an offer — whether it’s downloading an app, opening an account, or some other action — we may earn a commission from that advertiser, at no extra cost to you.

Our ultimate goal is to educate and inform, not lure you into signing up for certain offers. Compensation from our partners may impact what products we cover and where they appear on the site, but does not have any impact on the objectivity of our reviews or advice.

Transcription jobs require strong typing skills, a knack for detail, and fast turnaround times. These great companies offer high-paying gigs.

If you’re a fast typer and can translate audio to written form quickly, then you may enjoy working from home as a transcriptionist.

A transcriptionist listens to recorded audio and types it into a text format for clients. Some transcription jobs need every single word written out, including “umms” and “uhs,” while others just want the basic words. Examples of audio clips include meetings, conferences, classes, monologues, and more.

The transcription job description is simple, but each client may require different formatting or have other special requests. For example, one client may need the audio typed exactly as spoken, while another client may ask for bullet points.

When working directly with a client, you often get to set your own rates, turnaround times, and other guidelines. You also have the flexibility of a work from home job . If you’re working with an agency that provides jobs, you’ll need to follow their stipulations.

A few years ago now, I tried my hand at transcribing audio to text. At the time, it was a grueling procedure, and I had to rewind the audio constantly. Transcribing one six-minute audio clip easily took more than 30 minutes of my time, and only paid a few bucks.

Today, things are different. Transcription tools have improved, so it’s easier to complete transcription jobs quickly. User-friendly voice-to-text programs allow you to quickly transcribe the majority of an audio file in almost real-time, without manually typing each word one by one.

Who Can Work In Transcription?

Transcription jobs are great for college students, stay-at-home moms, and even high school students who can listen and type quickly.

Transcribing audio files might be a great opportunity to make money online  full-time or as a side hustle.

You can find your own transcription jobs working directly with clients or for a transcription company. Transcription platforms tend to pay less than working with clients directly, but they may provide consistent work and won’t require you to market your services. If you’re a beginner transcriptionist, it may be easier to build experience by working with an agency.

What You Need to Know About Remote Transcription Jobs

Transcription Jobs Facts Alt

The best thing about transcription jobs is that they’re typically remote, so you can work from home. Remote transcription jobs allow you to transcribe on the side for extra income or potentially build a full-time career while at home or on the go.

There are three types of work from home transcription jobs you can do: generic or entry-level, medical, and legal.

If you’re new to transcribing and need to get experience under your belt, then entry-level jobs are going to be your best option. If you already have experience and are ready to become certified in the medical or legal transcription job field, then those options will allow you to increase your income.

Transcription is like any other industry. As a beginner, it can be difficult to find high-paying transcription jobs from home. As you grow your client base, your income will also increase.

Most companies set a pay rate per “audio hour.” This isn’t the same as clocking in and out and getting paid per hour. Instead, you’re paid based on a set rate for one hour of audio transcribed. When you see a pay rate, make sure you understand if it’s the audio hour or general hourly rate. Transcribing can be a lengthy process, especially for a beginner.

Most companies assign transcription jobs based on short snippets of audio (2- to 10-minute clips). You’ll rarely be required to transcribe a full hour of audio in one sitting if hired to work for these companies.

How to Become a Transcriptionist

Jumping into the field is relatively simple. Most beginner transcriptionists start by taking an online transcription course that teaches them the skills necessary to perform the job.

Companies, such as  Transcribe Anywhere , offer classes that teach students the basics of general, medical, or legal transcription, as well as how to find new clients.

You can also find transcription jobs online.

1. FlexJobs

transcribe for FlexJobs

  • Pay : Depends on the job, workload, and experience required
  • Payment Method : Depends on the employer
  • Payment Frequency : Depends on the employer
  • Experience Required : Depends on the employer

FlexJobs is a job board that focuses on online, flexible, and work-from-home opportunities. You can find a range of transcribing jobs on the site, including both part-time and full-time positions, and filter opportunities by remote, freelance, flexible, part-time, and full-time options.

These jobs may be for US-based companies or international firms. In some cases, you may even find opportunities if you’re fluent in another language. A downside to using FlexJobs is that the site requires a paid membership, ranging from $14.95 for a one-month membership to $49.95 for a one-year subscription. You can join for one week for $6.95 to see if you find any jobs that fit your needs and experience.

  • Pay : $30 to $120+ per audio hour
  • Payment Method : PayPal, Fiverr Revenue Card, or Direct Deposit
  • Payment Frequency : 14 days after job completion (7 days if you’re a top-rated seller)
  • Experience Required : None

Fiverr is a job platform that allows you to list almost any type of professional service you can think of. Though many think Fiverr is only for beginners, it’s also for seasoned transcriptionists.

You set your rate on Fiverr. Someone can reach out to negotiate, but you can always decline. Research other reputable transcriptionists and use their pay structure as a guide. Remember, competition and quality are key when choosing a rate for your services. You can use Fiverr as a way to find new clients and deactivate the account once you have a steady stream of reliable clients.

3. Allegis Transcription

transcribe for Allegis Transcription

  • Pay : Between $13 and $17 per hour
  • Payment Method : Not available
  • Payment Frequency : Not available
  • Experience Required : May need prior experience with legal or industry transcription

Allegis Transcription focuses on transcribing files for the insurance and legal industries. The jobs are for independent contractors, which means you’re not a full- or part-time employee. Some reports from former employees said that the rates were low, so this job may only work if you’re a beginner. You can apply for a position here, get some experience under your belt, and then look for higher-paying gigs after a few months.

You’ll need to be based in the US and meet their technology requirements .

transcribe for Scribie

  • Pay : $5 to $25 per audio hour + bonus potential
  • Payment Method : PayPal
  • Payment Frequency : Any time

Scribie is one of the lowest-paying online transcription jobs for beginners I’ve found, but they do have some perks for those who are looking to break into a transcription career.

When you first apply and get accepted to Scribie, you’ll be on the bottom of the totem pole. This beginner position requires you to transcribe raw, short audio files with stringent formatting rules.

If you’re able to complete a set number of transcription jobs (usually 10), you may then be promoted to a reviewer position. If you review the next set of files correctly, you can be promoted to a self-reviewer role, then to a proofreader, and then to QC (quality control).

Each promotion is based on performance, and comes with either a pay increase or a different perk, like tasks that require less time to complete. You can also earn a 2.5% referral fee for every person who signs up to work for Scribie or be a Scribie customer.

Reaching each promotion level takes time and attention to detail, but once you’ve achieved the two highest levels, your income potential increases significantly, and that will generally help you make money faster .

5. TranscribeMe

TranscribeMe Homepage

  • Pay : $15+ per audio hour
  • Payment Frequency : Weekly

TranscribeMe is another transcription company that’s easy for beginners but pays a fairly low rate.

The company has a steady amount of work available, and you can choose audio clips to transcribe on your own schedule. TranscribeMe splits long audio files into 2- to 4-minute clips for easier processing. This may be good if you have kids at home or are doing this on top of a full-time job.

Like Scribie, TranscribeMe mentions the opportunity for position advancement, but there aren’t any specifics on pay increases.

6. GoTranscript

transcribe for GoTranscript

  • Pay : Up to $36 per audio hour
  • Payment Method : PayPal or Payoneer
  • Payment Frequency : Every Friday

GoTranscript boasts a “steady stream of projects” with new submissions every day. Unfortunately, the payment rate breakdown isn’t available, which makes the “up to $36 per audio hour” a little vague.

The current average earnings per month is $150 with a top-earning rate of $1,215 in one month. The average could be heavily weighted by a large number of transcribers doing this work on a very part-time basis.

Rev Homepage

  • Pay : $18 to $66.60 per audio hour

Rev is one of the more advanced transcription companies, and you might not get approved after your first time applying. Because Rev pays better rates, it requires high-quality submissions. If you don’t pass the entry exam the first time, you can try again. In the meantime, improve your transcription skills by working with a lower-paying company like Scribie.

You can also find work adding captions to videos, which pays slightly better than transcribing.

8. Audio Transcription Center

Audio Transcription Service Homepage

  • Pay : Between $17 to $19 per hour
  • Payment Method : Unclear
  • Payment Frequency : Weekly
  • Experience Required : Need to have a WPM of 80 or more and produce transcripts within 24 hours; take a typing test

Based in Boston, Audio Transcription Center offers both full-time, in-house positions and independent contract work. Its transcription work includes historic archival footage, tech webinars, quarterly reports, and more. Audio Transcription Center doesn’t offer medical transcription work. You need to be able to do basic research to verify names and spellings, especially for historic documents.

One of the main complaints was that there wasn’t enough work for the contractors, so it’s best to use this site with other services.

9. Net Transcripts, Inc.

  • Pay : Depends on the supplier
  • Payment Method : Depends on the supplier
  • Payment Frequency : Depends on the supplier
  • Experience Required : May need previous experience

Net Transcripts, Inc. focuses on law enforcement transcription jobs, including wire tap conversations, interrogations, 911 dispatch calls, and more. The site works as an aggregator where police departments, prosecutors, and others can list jobs. The requirements for these vary but may require previous experience, English fluency, and grammatical skills.

You need to fill out an application to be contacted by a recruiter.

Where to Find Medical Transcription Jobs From Home

If you’ve had previous transcription experience and are ready to advance in your career, medical transcription jobs you can do from home could be a good fit.

Working in medical transcription requires knowledge of medical terminology. Without experience in this area, transcribing files with medical terms could be difficult even for the best typists.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , certification isn’t always required to work in medical transcription jobs, but it’s usually preferred. Previous time spent in the medical profession is also highly preferred in this field because it helps with translating medical terminology spoken in the audio files.

As of 2019, the median pay for medical transcriptionists was $33,380 annually (or $16.04 per hour). Rates vary based on client budget and previous experience.

3 places that list medical transcription jobs from home:

  • Indeed  – salaries range from $45,000 to $80,000.
  • Glassdoor – salaries range from $15,000 to $53,000.
  • Zip Recruiter  – salaries range from $45,000 to $55,000.

Where to Find Legal Transcription Jobs From Home

Legal transcription jobs require more knowledge than most other transcription jobs.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , legal transcriptionists are required to have a certification or a state license to work in this field.

Perhaps more commonly known as court reporters, legal transcriptionists type what takes place during live court proceedings. Legal transcription jobs from home are available to certified, professional transcriptionists who tune into court proceedings via live broadcasting.

As of 2019, the BLS said the median pay for legal transcriptionists is $60,130 annually (or $28.91 per hour).

3 places that list legal transcription jobs from home:

  • Indeed  – salaries range from $40,000 to $55,000.
  • Glassdoor – salaries range from $18,000 to $54,000.
  • Zip Recruiter  – rates not listed.

Sign Up with Multiple Transcription Companies

When you’re just getting started in transcription, your best option may be to sign up for each company listed above. Create a spreadsheet or document and order the companies that hire you from highest to lowest-paying. Every few days, check for new remote transcription jobs on those sites and aim to increase your hourly rate.

Having a good standing with multiple transcription companies can help you keep your schedule full of jobs.

I wasn't looking for work-from-home jobs. I was just simply cruising on Facebook one day and found an article about transcription jobs. The article had listed five transcription companies that allowed you to work from home, I applied to two. I was accepted into Rev that week. My very first week I made $70, my husband gave me the, "I'll believe it when I see it," speech. So that following Monday I was paid my $70 and I couldn't have been happier.

Because of this company, because of the hard work I put in, I'm glad to say that I have helped my family so many times financially. This job has saved us so many times that I think to myself, "If it wasn't for this, we'd be screwed." Sure there are days where I get discouraged and think maybe it would be easier for me to go out and get a brick and mortar job, but then I remember above all else I'm a mother. I have four crazy kids at home and I don't want other people raising my children. It's MY job.

I can now proudly report that through the help of my income, my husband has now found a great paying local truck driving company where he is home every single day. My income supported our family of six through his employment transition.

So thanks Rev. I'm almost two years strong and don't plan to leave. I enjoy what I do here. I enjoy the people on the forums. I enjoy helping those who need it. Thanks for this opportunity, it has truly saved my family!

Tammy testimonial headshot

I LOVE LOVE LOVE working for Rev! I work 30 hours a week as a legal secretary, and do Rev part-time. I love that I can do it from home, in the comfort of my PJs.

I also love being paid once a week, and being able to keep track of how much I make with every job I turn out. I appreciate being heard. Every single time I have needed to address an issue, I have had a real person return my e-mail. No automatic replies! Which in today's world is a refreshing change. I love that every day is different.

I thank you every day for allowing me to work here. There are some weeks where I wouldn't be able to make it through the week without this extra income, and I am very grateful!

FAQs On Best Transcription Jobs For Beginners That Pay Well

What is a transcriptionist.

First things first, what is a transcriptionist?

A transcriptionist is someone who listens to audio files of people talking and types out what they’re saying.

That’s it. I kid you not. There are companies out there willing to pay you a handsome sum to do this.

There is a lot of transcription work for beginners out there, but not all of them are worth the time. That’s why I’ve compiled a list of the best transcription jobs in this article.

Like any new job, transcribing is one of those tasks you get better at with practice. That only means that with enough persistence and practice, anyone can become a transcriptionist.

Transcription assignments don’t only fall in the medical or legal industry anymore. There is also general transcription work and the newest most sought-after genre: transcribing videos and podcasts for blogs.

Is Transcription A Good Job?

If you’re a competent typist with strong hearing and listening abilities, and you’re comfortable using a computer for tasks like research and downloading information, then being a freelance transcriptionist might be a great fit for you.

According to Zip Recruiter , the average work-from-home transcriptionist earns an estimate of $ 58,441 a year. So even if you are content with your 9-5 job and would like to try freelance transcription jobs, if you are determined and resilient, you can earn amazing additional income!

best transcription jobs

There are certain transcription companies that need you to transcribe on-site, while many others enable their transcribers to do so from the comfort of their own homes.

Many businesses in the general transcribing industry, such as gmr transcription, will enable their employees to work from home. Online transcription work is also a flexible profession that does not need a lot of phone work, which is something that a lot of individuals want and need.

Another reason why individuals go toward a transcribing job is that there are many firms that recruit newcomers, even if you do not have transcription experience.

This basically implies that if you pass their transcription tests, you’re employed and ready to begin.

However, just like any other job, being a transcriptionist is not all rainbows and butterflies. It is not a job where you just have to put on your over the ear headphones, listen to some short audio clips, type out some words, and you are done.

Most clients have a set of extremely precise criteria that you must master in order to style the paper according to their specifications, be it with legal transcription work or general transcription jobs.

This has to deal with the writing style and grammatical norms, as well as a variety of other preferences that your employer will outline for you.

Be prepared to be very exact in this work since you may have pages long document that you must go to over and over to make sure you are following it to the letter for each and every file you transcribe.

Bear in mind that you will need a reliable internet connection to ensure a seamless transcribing experience.

What Are The Requirements For Transcription Jobs ?

The nice thing about applying for transcription jobs at an entry-level means that you don’t need to have a college degree or any prior experience to become a general transcriptionist.

Some first-hand training is always beneficial, but ultimately there are only a few skills you need in your toolbox to start applying for transcription jobs for beginners.

They operate in a variety of businesses as freelancers or full-time employees, although those in search of legal transcription jobs or medical transcription jobs will require particular knowledge. Transcribers utilize a variety of software and are often responsible for administrative duties.

Skills you’ll need to become a transcriptionist:

  • Typing skills
  • Listening skills
  • Determination

To give you a rough idea of the requirements of an online transcription job, these are the things that may be expected of you:

  • Prior to finishing the transcribing, understand the client’s instructions and make a note of any formatting or notation needs.
  • Attending planned meetings to keep up with any changes.
  • Completing transcriptions on schedule and checking draughts for spelling, grammatical, and formatting problems, as well as other discrepancies.
  • Following all confidentiality requirements and treating sensitive information with care, be it with an audio file or any video files.
  • Maintaining up-to-date transcribing software and attending refresher sessions as needed.
  • When there are problems, the key is to communicate.
  • Providing clients with finalised work and addressing any problems based on their input.
  • Be able to handle constructive criticism and improve transcription services.

If you don’t tick all of the boxes above, don’t worry, especially if you do not have previous transcribing experience. With time and practice, any of those skills can be improved and cultivated.

Do I Need To Take A Transcription Test?

I’m always honest with my readers.

Although you may not need any experience to become a transcriber, most companies will test your transcription skills with an audio test and your proficiency in the English language to ensure you qualify to work as a transcriptionist.

Here are some FREE practice websites to help you get started:

  • GoTranscript Practice
  • Listen and Write

Tip: Do a few of these practice tests, make a list of companies you want to apply to, and start out by applying to your least favored company as you get better at transcribing and move on to your top picks.

Also, for you multilingual out there, if you can speak more than one language fluently, you will have the opportunity to land more jobs.

Depending on the transcription company you are applying to, you will most likely have to submit a cover letter or a resume, and complete a test utilizing transcription software with an audio sample.

On your resume, be sure to mention any typing or administrative experience, should you have them.

The minimum typing speed for transcribing jobs is around 60 words per minute, so if your currently typing speed is below that, searching for online typing tutorials might help you increase your typing speed.

Instead of utilizing the very sluggish one-finger-at-a-time approach, your hands and fingers should be arranged appropriately on the keyboard without causing any discomfort.

Memorizing the locations of letters and numbers on the keyboard will aid in the learning process.

What Tools Do You Need For Transcription Jobs?

Alright, if you’re almost on your way to qualifying for transcription jobs at an entry level.  All you need are three more things to get transcribing:

  • A solid internet connection
  • Microsoft Word

Yup, that’s it. I’m sure you have all of that right now.

Here are some optional but recommended time (and life) saving equipment that you could invest in to make your job as a transcriptionist easier:

  • Transcription foot pedal

Think of this as a mouse but for your foot. With a foot pedal, you can control the audio playback with your toes, keeping your fingers free for maximum transcription efficiency.

Foot pedals can be as cheap as $20 or reach an eye-watering $300. The Infinity USB Digital Foot is moderately priced and it’s a favorite amongst transcribers.

Express Scribe is an excellent alternative as it is a commonly used industry tool for professional transcribers. It is free to download and install on a Mac or PC, and it allows you to control everything with your keyboard or a foot pedal.

It offers an intuitive user interface and a wide variety of hotkey options for increased speed and efficiency. Express Scribe is available in both a free and a premium edition. The free version supports foot pedals and can play a variety of audio file formats.

  • Transcription software

This allows you to control audio playback using keyboard shortcuts or your foot pedal, so you don’t get a headache going back and forth on a program like Windows Media Player.

Some companies will give you this program or you can find it here for free.

  • Freemake Audio Converter

The free program is used to convert across different audio formats, merge audio files, and extract audio from video files.

  • Slice Audio File Splitter

This free tool may be used to cut audio files.

This is a useful tool if you have a team of transcribers and want to send them pieces of hours-long audio recording so they can return the transcripts fast.

You may slice the audio files into numerous pieces, such as a few segments, or by time, such as 15 minutes.

If there are extended intervals of quiet in your audio, it can recognize them and clip them out, allowing you to work faster.

Another free audio editing and recording program is Audacity.

It’s capable of capturing live audio, converting records to digital forms, and cleaning up audio recordings. You can use it to combine audio files that some of your clients send to you into a single file.

  • Internet Download Manager

Raise your hand if you have ever tried to download something only to have the power go out.

You may enhance download speeds by up to five times with the internet download manager, and it can also restart any unfinished downloads because nothing is worse than interrupted internet connections.

This little software will prompt you to download music, video, or document files from web pages you visit.

As a result, if a customer gives you a huge audio or video file, the internet download manager will appear when you view the page with the attachment, prompting you to download the file.

As a blogger, writer, or freelancer, it’s not always easy to make enough money to pay the bills. Fortunately, online transcription jobs present flexible work opportunities to help maintain you while you’re building your business.

What is a Transcriptionist?

Transcriptionists take voice recordings and transcribe (type) them up into a document in word processing software such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or even Notepad.

This is a legitimate job that most companies hire out remotely because with cloud storage systems audio can be loaded and transcribed from anywhere with an internet connection.

Some online transcription jobs involve legal topics, interviews, or any other range of topics. While some projects will require a little bit more experience and training, most of these jobs require no experience at all.

Businesses looking for transcribers generally have two main requirements: 1) A good understanding of the English language and 2) a decent typing speed.

If you meet these two main requirements, online transcription jobs aren’t as hard to find as you might think.

While many voice transcription jobs are in the legal and medical fields, there is a growing demand for other fields. For example, podcasters , YouTubers, and course creators all over the internet also need the services of a good transcriber.

How Much Do Transcriptionists Get Paid?

While browsing, please note that the pay rate is usually calculated this way:

Per minute or per hour of audio/video file – For example, $0.30 per minute of audio.

Note: You are NOT paid by how long you have worked on these transcription jobs.

In other words – if it takes you an hour to complete a transcription, but the audio was 10 minutes let’s say, and you’re being paid $1 per minute, you will receive $10 for the transcription. That makes your pay rate $10/hr if it takes you a full 60 minutes to complete a 10-minute audio transcription job.

While accuracy is important, your speed is what determines how much money you could earn on any given day completing online transcription jobs from home.

While most people working transcribing jobs from home do so part-time, a full-time entry-level remote transcriber generally makes between $27,000 to $38,000 every year. For most people, pay generally breaks down to around $16 per hour.

Do People Really Still Hire Out for Transcription Jobs?

You may ask yourself why, in the age of speech-to-text recognition and artificial intelligence, would someone require a transcriptionist.

Can’t an AI just handle it?

It’s a very valid question because many transcriptionist sites like Rev and Descript do offer automated transcription services for their clients.

rev transcript editor

An artificial intelligence-driven software solution can process much of human communication to text. But it isn’t perfect, and it is not as good as a real human for grammar and accuracy.

At least not yet, thank goodness for anyone looking for one of these online transcription jobs.

Additionally, AI still struggles to understand accents and regional dialects.

Of course, nothing is stopping you from using AI and other software solutions to make your transcription job that much easier for yourself.

There are several fairly accurate AI software solutions out there such as Otter.ai and Descript that can do the bulk of the transcription work for you. Then, you can simply review and ensure accuracy.

In fact, using AI solutions like this can help you speed up the process of doing your transcription jobs from home.

However, it’s important to note that some websites that offer transcription jobs might require you do all work within their system. This means you won’t be able to download the files to input them into AI software.

The reason? Some of the data you will be transcribing is sensitive and they can’t risk client files getting out.

But, when you can use tools to help you, work smarter not harder!

There is also professional transcription software that can ease the carpal tunnel pain often associated with starting and stopping audio recordings, especially if you invest in a foot pedal.

If you don’t want to shell out the money for that software immediately, Express Scribe comes with a free version!

Regardless of what you use to help you do your transcription jobs, most of the tools available offer a fairly good return for such a low investment to start. So where do you start?

What to Look for in Online Transcription Jobs

We’ve given you a lot of places to consider when searching for transcription jobs from home.

In this section, we’ll break down what you should be looking for when you are considering transcription companies to work for.

1. The company should have a professional website and a portfolio.

An online transcription service that has been around for a while will likely have an online portfolio of work they’ve done in the past.

A professional website will have a lot more information about the company, like its staff and the types of services they offer as well.

What you’re looking for on the website includes, but shouldn’t be limited to:

  • Pay structure
  • When you can expect to receive your payment
  • How you will be paid (i.e. via Paypal, Stripe, Gusto, or some other platform)
  • Troubleshooting information (i.e. What to do when you have a problem with audio, a client, or a deadline)
  • Their workflow process – you need to know what is expected of you every step of the way.

2. The company should have an existing online reputation.

rev transcription reviews

One of the best ways to find out more about a company online is to check its online reputation.

You can do this by searching for them on Google and other search engines. Then, you’re going to want to read reviews, both good and bad, from their past customers.

You can also look on Facebook and other social media platforms to see what people are saying about them.

You should also check out the Better Business Bureau website to see if they have any open complaints against them. If they do – it’s a red flag!

3. They should NOT charge you a sign-up fee.

It’s one thing for a company to take a percentage of the fees clients are paying, but any company that asks you to pay to be on their platform should be avoided.

No company should ever charge you to work for them. Full stop!

4. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

We hate to put it like this, but there are companies out there that just want to scam you.

They are preying on people that are looking for work and setting up fake websites that look legit in hopes of getting your info.

Signs it’s a scam include:

  • Large hiring bonuses that require banking info before you even go through the onboarding process
  • Promises of large checks that are outside “standard” or “average” rates transcription jobs normally pay
  • Emails from @gmail, @yahoo, @hotmail, etc… Real company correspondence will always come from something like [email protected]

Don’t be afraid to walk away from a deal that seems too good to be true. There are plenty of legit companies out there!

What To Do If You’re Ready to Start Taking Transcription Jobs

Try it out before signing up to do it for a company. Go to a random YouTube video and try transcribing it.

You can choose a long one, a short one, whatever. Just choose one, and then open up a Microsoft Word or Google Doc and start trying to transcribe it.

See how it feels to actually listen to a piece of audio and then type out what the people on camera are saying.

If you are uncomfortable, that is normal. But, if you hate the experience, you should do a few more and determine whether or not you really want to look for online transcription jobs.

It does take time, and in the beginning, you might suck at it. That’s okay. If you want to keep doing it, just keep practicing.

Tools/Software to Get

There are some things you might want to invest in if you’re serious about taking transcribing jobs from home.

  • A computer: Though it’s highly unlikely you don’t have one if you’re reading this, we had to say it.

Bonus points if you snag a sweet laptop so you can do these transcription jobs by the pool in Bali. Just sayin’

  • A quality set of closed-back headphones: Okay, they don’t have to be completely noise canceling, although that is best, but you do want a really good set of headphones to hear everything the speakers in your audio/video are saying
  • A solid internet connection: Or at least plenty of data if doing this job from the road
  • Microsoft Word or LibreOffice: Libre Office is open-source software that pretty much does everything Microsoft Office products do.

Alternatively, you could use Google Docs. And, honestly, this might be best if you’re planning on doing this gig on the go. That way you can access your files from anywhere.

Of course, Microsoft 365 can be accessed online, but paying monthly subscription fees for it kind of eats into your profit margins…

Tips for Succeeding with Transcription Jobs

If you have come this far, we’re betting you’re serious about doing transcription jobs from home. With that in mind, here are some tips for success:

  • Sign up with more than one company in the beginning: If you want to make a full-time income, this might be a good idea to ensure you always have work coming in.
  • Practice as much as you can before signing up: Because many of these companies make you take a test before they will hire you, you want to give yourself the best chances of success.

There are free websites that offer typing skill assessments and practice exercises that can help you get your words per minute (WPM) up. Here are just three of them:

— Typing Academy

— TypingClub

— How To Type

  • Don’t ever guess about the words: If the audio is inaudible, say so. You can actually cause more harm than good if you type what you think you heard
  • Take your time, and don’t try to multitask: Nothing can make you mess up faster than trying to speed through your work or working on multiple things at a time.

While it makes complete sense that you want to earn as much per hour as possible, going too fast has too much potential to backfire.

  • Always proofread before you turn in your work: Giving something a second look can help you prevent turning in subpar work. You don’t want to get a reputation for lots of errors because it can get you blacklisted.
  • Start a website of your own: If doing transcription jobs makes you happy, and you want to do more of it, consider starting your own website.

Doing this will give you the ability to work with clients directly. You can sometimes charge more, and you can create your own contracts to set up things like retainer fees for more consistent income.

The best part? When you’re running the show, you can offer additional deliverables that can help you earn even more money. For example, offering blog posts related to the transcripts you’re providing.

In fact, you could eventually scale the business and have freelancers working under you and end up with your own transcription agency that shows up on a list just like this one someday.

Transcription is a job that involves converting audio or video recordings into text. This work can be done in an office or remotely via online transcription services.

To be a successful transcriptionist, you must have good listening skills, excellent grammar and punctuation, and the ability to read quickly and accurately.

Transcriptionists must also be able to work fast and efficiently – usually in a quiet environment with little distraction. They should also have patience, a good attention span, and the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.

Most importantly, transcribers need to have an understanding of the English language. They need to be able to understand both spoken and written English, as well as any dialects that may be used in the particular industry they’re working in.

So, what do you need to start a transcription career?

What Do I Need to Start Online Transcription Jobs?

The transcription job requirements are not many. Most importantly, this depends on o the transcription company you work for.

You can do transcription jobs from anywhere and anytime if you have a laptop, a reliable internet connection, and head/earphones. Those are the three most basic requirements.

Additionally, your typing skill should be superb. To make good money transcribing, you must have good typing speed. You should have at least 80 WPM and above. If you are slow typing, you can always learn how to increase your typing speed.

This can be a good venture if you don’t have a problem understanding different accents worldwide. The job involves transcribing audio and videos from interviews, phone conversations, inspirational podcasts, political speeches, and more. You’ll need to listen to what is being said and type it out, which is important.

How Much Can I Earn Per Day with a Transcription Job?

The pricing of transcription jobs depends on a lot of things. On average, most transcribers in the best-paid transcription jobs get $45 per audio hour.

You can be given an hour-long or more audio or video file to convert into text. Alternatively, you can choose a shorter audio or video file split into a shorter duration like 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, or even 30 minutes.

So, the video or audio length depends on the file you pick. Also the payment also depends on the length of the file you choose.

Depending on the job and site rates, you can make between $8-10 per clock hour. You can also get a direct transcription job from other clients willing to pay you more.

Hour-Long audio can fill up to 10 to 20 pages of MS Word document texts. But this also depends on the script and the transcription jobs company style guide rules. For example, some rules ask you to leave out the fillers, that is, the uhms, ah, you know, like, and so forth.

So, how many pages can you type in a day? Do the math to find out how much you can make per day.

How Do I Get Paid?

11 Work From Home Jobs That Pay Daily

If you're looking for work from home jobs that pay daily, here is a list of fast-paying, money-making ideas!

One of the downsides to working online - whether a work from home job or a side hustle - is that they don’t always pay frequently. Many companies have a bi-weekly or monthly payout schedule, and sometimes there’s a high minimum threshold before you can cash out. Such irregular payout schedules can make it difficult to manage your finances if you rely on online work to pay your bills.

However, the good news is that many work from home jobs pay out frequently - sometimes even daily! While not all of them can be a full-time income, they are quick and easy ways to get cash in your pocket right when you need it. There are also lots of options for beginners that don’t require experience or a bachelor’s degree.

One of the keys to getting paid daily is to have multiple income streams. This means having a handful of small side gigs where you'll be getting paid more frequently instead of one job that only pays once or twice a month.

Here are some of the best legit online and flexible jobs that pay daily .

1. Freelance Writing Jobs

Freelancing is one of the easiest ways to start making money online. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a journalism degree or experience to be successful. 6. Selling Digital Products

Digital products are any items instantly delivered to the customer once purchased in the form of a downloadable file. Common digital products include printable PDFs , templates, ebooks, graphics, or audio files.

This business model is great because there are no shipping costs, and you can sell an unlimited number of products without having to deal with an inventory. Many people get started with digital products using free tools like Canva , making it accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

Once you have created some digital products, you can sell them in one of the following ways:

Etsy  is a marketplace known for its handmade and vintage goods, but it’s also a great place to sell unique digital products. If you have graphic design skills, you can create printables or other digital products to sell on Etsy.

It’s also great for beginners because you can tap into an existing customer base and start selling immediately. Etsy earnings are paid out by direct deposit to your bank account every Monday.

Social Media

You can create your own digital product store using a free platform like  PayHip  or  Gumroad  and then promote your store using social media. For example, many Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram users promote digital products like ebooks and printables using creative videos and posts and then include their shop link in their bio.

If you have a large social media following, this can be a great way to make money! The best part of this method is that once a customer makes a purchase, you receive those funds right away!

7. Membership Business

Memberships can be an excellent way to generate recurring monthly income by offering exclusive content or products to your members. A membership business could be an excellent option if you have some kind of skill or knowledge that others would be willing to pay for.

For example, you could start a cooking membership where you share new recipes with your members every month or a gardening membership where you offer tips and advice on growing different types of plants.

There are also several platforms you can host your membership on, all of which allow you to cash out your funds immediately.

Patreon  enables creators to earn money from their fans by offering exclusive content, behind-the-scenes access, and early access to new work. Fans can choose from multiple membership tiers, and Patreon takes a percentage of all payments. However, you can cash out your payments at any time via PayPal.

8. Affiliate Marketing

Whether you have your own blog or you're using your social media accounts as an influencer or content creator , affiliate marketing is an excellent way to earn cash quickly!

Affiliate marketing is a performance-based business in which you earn a commission when you successfully sell a product or service. For example, if you talk a lot about gardening on your Instagram account, you could become an affiliate partner for a company that sells gardening tools. The affiliate company will give you a unique tracking link or coupon code to promote to your audience, and you earn a commission for every purchase resulting from your referral.

However, many affiliate programs have a 30-to 60-day waiting period before paying out commissions, which is not ideal when you need cash! The good news is that some affiliate programs pay out much faster.

Impact has thousands of affiliate partners in its database and offers publishers a variety of methods for making money. You can get paid per sale, install, completed action, or click. They also offer multiple payment methods, including PayPal and direct deposit. They are known for their timely payouts, with top-performing publishers getting paid multiple times a month (as long as you have at least $10 in earnings).

There are other affiliate networks that pay more than once a month; however, many of them get poor reviews. Always be sure to do your due diligence before signing up with a platform. You can also look into referral programs directly through your favorite retailers, brands, and products. Many of these offer same-day rewards and cash payments!

9. Survey Sites

Although survey sites alone aren’t enough to pay the rent, taking surveys in your spare time can be a great way to make some extra money. Plus, plenty of survey sites pay out frequently - here are some of the best ones.

Survey Junkie

Arguably the most popular survey site out there,  Survey Junkie  is a fun way to make a little extra cash on the side. Payments per survey vary, but if you finish three surveys daily, you could make as much as $40 per month.

Each survey you complete is awarded points, which can be redeemed for cash via PayPal or gift cards for popular stores like Walmart, Sephora, or Starbucks. You also get bonus points just for signing up! As soon as you have enough points, you can redeem them immediately.

Branded Surveys

Branded Surveys  is another popular option with over 2 million members. Like Survey Junkie, you can earn points for taking surveys and then redeem those points for PayPal cash or an Amazon gift card. 1,000 points equals $10, and you can cash out once you reach 500. Each survey is worth 10-300 points and typically takes 10-20 minutes to complete.

Swagbucks  is a bit different from the other survey sites on this list in that they offer a variety of ways to earn money, not just through surveys. You can also get paid to watch videos, play games, shop online, and more. With Swagbucks, you are able to redeem your points for PayPal cash or gift cards once you reach 300 points in your account (equal to $3).

Gauge is a survey site and smartphone app where you can earn $10-$500 per survey answered. Survey opportunities are sent out via email, and you need to answer quickly because these survey opportunities fill fast! You can respond to survey questions in written, audio, or video format; however, you'll earn more for audio and video responses. Surveys take approximately five minutes to answer and payments are sent via PayPal or gift card within 24-48 hours.

11. Sell Used Stuff

One easy way to make money quickly is by selling unwanted things you have around your home. From clothes, shoes, jewelry, and electronics to sporting equipment, toys, and more, there is a huge market of people who want these items for a good price!

The fastest way to make money with this method is to sell directly to customers using Craigslist , Nextdoor, or Facebook Marketplace. Just take some photos of your items, post them online for free, and connect with potential buyers. When someone is interested in buying an item, set up a public and safe meeting spot to exchange the item for quick cash!

If you have a little time on your hands, you can choose to sell online using an online consignment shop like eBay , Poshmark , or Mercari . With these sites, you'll take photos, post your items, and wait for them to sell. Then, you'll ship your item directly to the customer, and you'll get paid once the transaction is complete. With this method, the selling platform will take a small transaction fee for using their site.

You can also look locally for in-person pawn and consignment shops that will purchase items the same day. Just note with this last method, you'll make the least amount of money because the consignment shops need to cover their brick-and-mortar expenses, offering the seller lower rates for their items.

Conclusion: Jobs That Pay Daily

From surveys and focus groups to freelancing and affiliate marketing, these are the best online jobs that pay out quickly, if not daily. While survey sites and user testing won’t make you rich, they can be a great part-time option to earn extra cash.

If you’re looking for something more substantial that could become a full-time job, consider freelancing or affiliate marketing. With a bit of work and patience, you can start making money on a daily basis!

Why this Ethiopian navy officer ended up as a metro driver

paid transcription jobs

'I've seen everything there is to see overground'

Tall, smiling Worku Bedasso is a bit of a legendary figure at the Moscow Metro. When asked how he ended up working here, he says noncommittally: "It just happened!"

In Soviet times, the young lieutenant of the Ethiopian Navy came here to study on an exchange program: first in Georgia in 1985, and a couple of years later in Azerbaijan. While Worku was learning how to build socialism, a civil war broke out in his native Ethiopia, and “old-school” officers were no longer needed by the new state. His wife and children remained in Ethiopia; they did not want to go to Russia. A few weeks later, the Soviet Union collapsed and foreign students based in Baku were sent to Moscow.

In Moscow, he was granted refugee status and issued with a work permit; however, during the 1998 economic crisis it was hard to find work. Then, his new Russian girlfriend, Olga, suggested he try working at a metro depot, since he was good with machinery. After six months of training, the former officer became a metro driver assistant.

“The first time felt strange and even scary,” Worku recalls. “But a military background helps. A metro driver needs to have stress tolerance, army discipline and a desire to work hard.”

While on the job, Worku enrolled at the Railways Institute (MIIT) to get a degree in engineering. However, it turned out that combining work and studies was too difficult and in 1999, he decided to quit the job...

By 2010, when he had decided to return to the Moscow Metro, Worku had been working for a logistics company in Moscow and Sochi, had married Olga and received a Russian passport. He once again had to make the journey from a driver assistant to a Category 1 driver, and looking back on it today, he is quite happy with his life: “It's fun to drive a train and get good money for it.” Furthermore, in all his years of working, he has never had any accidents: he attributes it to good luck.

That said, at the age of 62, he has started to think of ending his career as a driver and move to a job at a metro depot. “When you are young, you don’t feel the workload, but at my age it’s getting a bit hard! I don’t want to part with the metro. I have seen everything there is to see overground.”

'I’ve said everything about Dostoyevsky. But I’ve loved trains since I was a kid!'

Anton Khlynin studied Russian language and literature at Moscow State University and even spent a year and a half as a PhD student. But at some point, he realized it was time to stop. Anton seems a very serious man until he turns with his back to you and you see a biker's braid popping out from under the collar of his uniform.

“At university, I had a research topic that I thought was very interesting - the perception of Dostoevsky’s works in Scandinavian countries,” - says Anton. “He is the main writer there. I took it up with great fervor, but as I was writing my thesis, I found out that this subject had already been thoroughly researched by another academic. I was extremely disappointed.”

Academia no longer appeals to Anton, although he is still interested in literature: he even writes himself, albeit articles about railways. In 2007, he decided to fulfill his childhood dream and go work as an engine driver.

“I have been a fan of railways since the age of five. My first memory is seeing a locomotive on the tracks.”

Anton is now 40 and he recently qualified as a 2nd grade driver, by coming in the top three places in a professional competition. Unlike his colleague, Worku, Anton has seen many emergency situations in his career.

“Once, a passenger fell on the tracks at Park Pobedy [station] (dark blue line), but I managed to hit the breaks in time. Also, there are diggers who are just looking for adventure,” says Anton.  “When I was a kid, I was a member of a railway modeling club, and then of a literary society. I had things to do. Whereas they, it seems, have nothing to do!"

Yet, despite everything, Anton insists he does not regret having changed his career so drastically, even though he admits seeing trains in his dreams, too. “I used to occasionally dream I was running a red light, or that my train was derailing. But now all that is gone and I sleep normally!”

When asked whether knowledge of literature helps him in his work, Anton replies philosophically: “My general level of education helps me in my life. And work is part of life.”

'I drive 2,000 people during rush hour!'

When you look at tall, youthful Vadim Kalugin, it is hard to believe that he is one of the oldest drivers on the Moscow Metro, a veteran of labor. Vadim is 55 years old, and he has spent most of his life underground. Now he is a 1st grade driver. He joined the Moscow Metro straight after returning from military service, on advice from his mother-in-law.

“She herself worked in the aircraft industry and knew what responsible work meant. And she liked the uniform that metro drivers had,” Vadim recalls. “By the way, we are sometimes called ‘underground pilots’. But a pilot carries 300 people on a plane, while I drive more than 2,000 people during rush hour! I think our job involves even more responsibility.”

According to Vadim, the Moscow Metro is not only the most beautiful, but also the most reliable. “Even in the 1990s, during the economic crisis, when many people did not receive their wages, metro drivers were always paid on time and metro trains were on schedule. After all, if the metro stops, the whole of Moscow will stop.”

Vadim says that the main thing in his work is to strictly follow the instructions. “In the metro, everything happens at lightning speed! The driver has no right to make a mistake. In my 34 years of work, I have never had a single reprimand,” he says, adding that, sadly, he is still going to retire next year.
