ABSTRACT This study investigated the awareness and utilization of social media networks for academic activities by information technology students in Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola. This study adopted survey design and the population of the study was one hundred and twenty three (123) students. A survey questionnaire was designed and distributed to gather data for this study. The data collected was analyzed using the descriptive statistics arranged in a percentage score. The research findings indicate a positive attitude towards academic use of social media networks by students. Although there are some differences in terms of student’s opinions on academic applications of social media networks, these differences are largely due to the fact that the use of these social media networks in academic context is not well defined. The higher academic institutions need to devise appropriate policies and strategies on how they can utilize social media networks sites to support education and learning beyond the classroom.
