  • Furthermore, the seat selection should be made at the hour of flight booking itself because due to the high opportunity to get a preferable seat according to your decision on the grounds that the seat accessibility will be high.
  • Besides, you can make a seat choice during your registration. Be that as it may, it relies upon the accessibility of the seats on the flights.

The Complete Guide to Flying WestJet

Going

July 14, 2023

WestJet is Canada’s second largest airline, based in Calgary, Alberta. Founded in 1996 to emulate low-cost US carrier Southwest Airlines on short flights in western Canada, the airline has grown and morphed into a full-service airline with everything from regional flights on turboprop aircraft, international long haul flights on Boeing 787 aircraft, and even its own ultra-low-cost subsidiary.

WestJet is well known as a leading airline in Canada and has attracted fans for its straightforward booking process, comfortable seating, friendly service, and generally low fares—although fares tend to be competitive rather than outright cheap flights . It should be noted, however, that WestJet trails Star Alliance member Air Canada in global connectivity—while WestJet has codeshare flights and agreements with other airline mileage programs (most notably Delta), miles-collectors with global travel ambitions may find WestJet too regional.

What’s WestJet?

WestJet is a full-service Canadian airline that grew up as a discounter. It’s well-established in Canada and has interline and codeshare agreements with a number of international carriers, including Delta, KLM, Korean Air, Japan Airlines, Emirates, and Cathay Pacific.

What we love about WestJet:

  • More customer-friendly than some Canadian competitors
  • Nonstop flights from Canadian cities to sunny destinations across North America
  • Frequent flier partnership with Delta Air Lines

What we don’t love about it:

  • Frequent flier program can be confusing, as it basically pays a rebate percentage on purchased fares. With WestJet, you can only earn miles on four airline partners, and there are some restrictions.
  • Limited flights within eastern Canada
  • Flights to many large US cities are not daily

Some examples of deals Going has found on WestJet

  • Mistake Fare: Seattle to Tokyo for $316 roundtrip
  • LA, Phoenix, or Portland to Toronto for $242 roundtrip
  • Atlanta to Banff for $278 roundtrip

A brief history of WestJet

Founded in Calgary in 1994, WestJet began operations in 1996, serving short haul routes in western Canada with a fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft, modeled after Southwest Airlines’ low-cost model in the US. Following the merger of Canadian Airlines into Air Canada, WestJet grew to become Canada’s second largest airline. And whereas Montreal-headquartered Air Canada had historically been focused on serving eastern Canada, WestJet was decidedly focused on western Canada.

WestJet expanded to the US, including Hawai’i, before adding more service in eastern Canada. It also added turboprop aircraft to serve smaller Canadian communities as WestJet Encore, as well as Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft for long haul flights to Europe.

Where WestJet flies

WestJet operates over 300 nonstop routes, mostly in the US and Canada. Its routes serve about 24 US cities, including popular warm-weather destinations like Las Vegas, Phoenix, Palm Springs, Orlando, Honolulu, Maui, Orange County, Ft. Myers, and Tampa. The airline also serves major cities like San Francisco, Nashville, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York (LaGuardia), and Atlanta, but not on a daily basis.

The airline serves Amsterdam and London Heathrow year-round; during summer 2023, it will serve an additional six seasonal destinations throughout Europe—Barcelona, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Dublin, Edinburgh, Rome Fiumicino, and London Gatwick. A nonstop route from Calgary to Tokyo Narita will also begin in 2023.

WestJet’s hubs

WestJet is in the process of transitioning its network from a multi-hub concept to single-hub. While previously operating hubs in Toronto and Vancouver, CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech has noted that the company’s current strategy revolves around focusing on building Calgary as the airline’s only intentional-connecting hub (meaning connections are possible in other cities, but only Calgary is being actively designed that way). Calgary will also be the only base for the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner operations, without immediate intention to further expand that aircraft’s role in the network.

WestJet will continue to operate point-to-point service from eastern Canada to destinations in the US.

Aisle and seats on a WestJet flight

Tips for booking a WestJet flight

WestJet’s fare structure is pretty straightforward. Bookers choose the class of service they want and then choose from a standard or pricier flexible fare (called Flex).

WestJet fare types

WestJet offers three classes of service: Economy, Premium, and Business (only on Boeing 787 aircraft). Fares for each of these cabins comes with varying options on restrictions.

More expensive Flex fares in all classes of service typically include checked bags and seat assignments, and they can be refundable or offer a credit or voucher if you need to change or cancel your flight.

In the Economy cabin, in addition to the Standard and Flex fares, there’s also the cheapest Basic Economy fare, which is not changeable or refundable, and it does not accrue WestJet Rewards.

On WestJet Encore and WestJet Link, flights operated by either Q400 or Saab 340 turboprop equipment have slight onboard differences between Economy and Premium, such as an extra inch of legroom and seating in the front of the aircraft.

On WestJet flights operated by a Boeing 737 aircraft, Economy fares are for Economy seating, and Premium fares are for Premium seating. But on most WestJet aircraft, Premium seating is similar to other carriers’ domestic first or business class products, including a larger seat with more legroom, alcoholic beverages, and hot meals on longer flights.

For Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights, WestJest also offers Business class in addition to Economy and Premium. Business class features a lie-flat seating option, as well as hot meals and alcoholic beverages. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner operates on select domestic routes within Canada, to some other North American destinations, and on long haul flights to Europe.

Baggage fees on WestJet

For Standard Economy and Basic Economy fares that do not already include a checked bag, baggage fees start at $30 each way for Canada and other North American destinations if you buy a bag from the time of booking up until 24 hours prior to departure. Within 24 hours of departure and at airport ticket counters, baggage fees go up to $40.

All fare classes include a personal item and carry-on at no extra cost.

Seat selection fees on WestJet

Standard seat selection is only included with Economy Flex, Premium, and Business fares. Seat selection fees start at $5 for all other fares, including Economy Standard and Basic Economy.

Fees on WestJet:

  • Carry-on bag: Passengers are allowed one carry-on bag and one personal item. There is no charge for carry-on bags.
  • Checked bag: From $30
  • Seat selection: From $5
  • Food: On flights over 90 minutes, buy-on-board items start at $3.49 for snacks and $10.49 for entrees.
  • Wifi: WestJet does not publish prices for their onboard Wifi, but it is available for select purchase on most Boeing aircraft.

A lounge accessible with a WestJet ticket

What it’s like flying on WestJet

Checking in.

WestJet offers online, mobile, and airport check-in. Premium and Business passengers receive priority check-in at the ticket counter.

Lounge access

WestJet partners with lounge operators at larger Canadian and international airports but does not operate its own lounges. Lounge access is available for WestJet Rewards tier members and passengers seated in Business class up to three hours prior to the scheduled departure of their flight.

WestJet’s boarding process is similar to other carriers offering seat assignments—the aircraft is boarded by rows beginning with Premium and Business passengers. Carry-on size and count is strictly monitored to ensure there’s enough room onboard the aircraft for each passenger’s carry-on allotment.

Flying WestJet in economy class

WestJet’s economy class is comparable to competing airlines. Checked baggage and seat assignments are included at higher, less restrictive fares, and they are available for a fee at lower fares. Seats recline, and there’s personal device entertainment available via the Wifi network on narrowbody aircraft if you bring your own device. Seat design and comfort is consistent with competing North American full-service carriers. Seat pitch ranges from 30” on the Q400 aircraft to 31-35” on jet aircraft. WestJet also sells preferred or extra legroom seats at higher fees. Passengers are served complimentary beverages and a sweet or salty snack on flights over 90 minutes. Snacks and alcoholic beverages are also available for purchase. On flights over 2.5 hours, hot entrees are also available for purchase.

On Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights to Europe and Asia, hot meals are included in the fare, and pillows and blankets are provided on every seat. Seat-back entertainment and earbuds are also provided. Boeing 787 flights to all other destinations within North America offer WestJet’s standard service in Economy.

Flying WestJet in business class

WestJet’s Business class is only available on Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, offering a lie-flat seat in an individual pod with a large entertainment screen, noise-canceling headphones, complimentary hot meals, and alcoholic beverages. Business class is available on select domestic Canada and other North America routes, as well as on every flight from Canada to Europe or Asia. Pillows, blankets, and amenity kits are available on intercontinental flights from Canada. WestJet’s Business Class product on these flights is generally competitive with Air Canada, although the airline’s smaller size allows it to be a bit more innovative and nimble than its larger competitor, like subbing in truffle popcorn for mixed nuts as a cocktail snack and using smaller Canadian purveyors like Mat & Nat for amenity kits.

Dreamliner flights to Europe and Asia also have a Premium cabin, which is essentially a premium economy cabin, offering more room, upgraded meals, individually packaged pillows and blankets, and an amenity kit from Rocky Mountain Soap Company.

WestJet reviews

WestJet is rated a 3-star airline by SkyTrax with a 4/10 customer rating (Air Canada also has a 4/10 customer rating). Common concerns raised by travelers in SkyTrax reviews include difficulty with rebooking after flight delays or cancellations, or significant schedule changes after booking that impacted the length and convenience of their journeys. Many reviewers noted that WestJet’s limited flight schedule allowed for less ability to recover after delays or cancellations impact their itineraries. Overall, customers appreciate WestJet’s friendly, helpful crews.

Upcoming Changes to WestJet Preferred Seat & Baggage Fees

WestJet has announced some upcoming changes to the fees charged for baggage and Preferred seats, which are set to come into effect as of November 7, 2023.

Furthermore, WestJet Silver and Gold members will soon be required to redeem advance seat selection vouchers prior to check-in if they wish to reserve a Preferred or exit row seat at no cost.

Upcoming Changes to WestJet Checked Baggage Fees

On November 7, 2023, it will be more expensive to pay for a checked bag at the airport than it currently is.

WestJet uses a tiered structure for baggage fees, by which you pay less for prepaid checked bag than you would during check-in. The amount you pay at the airport is $10 (all figures in CAD) more than if you prepay, and the cost per bag depends on the fare type purchased and the destination to which you’re flying.

However, as of November 7, 2023, WestJet is adding a third tier to its baggage fee structure, whereby if you don’t prepay for a bag or pay for it using self-serve check-in, you’ll have to pay even more.

For example, on a Basic fare in Canada or the US, you’ll pay $30–36 if you prepay for a checked bag, or $40–48 if you pay for it during self-serve check-in. However, you’ll need to pay $50–59 if you check-in with an agent.

The extra $10 charge only applies to tickets bought on or after November 7, 2023, and only if you check-in with an agent at the airport.

If you’ve purchased a ticket on or before November 6, 2023, WestJet asks you to self-identify with an agent to avoid the additional charge.

Furthermore, guests who aren’t able to use self-serve check-in will be exempt from the extra $10 fee.

Upcoming Changes to WestJet Seat Selection Fees

WestJet has also announced changes to seat selection fees for some guests.

As of November 7, 2023, passengers who book an Econo or EconoFlex fare will no longer be able to select a Preferred or exit row seat free of charge at check-in. Rather, a fee will always apply for Preferred or exit row seats on these fares.

Currently, passengers on Econo and EconoFlex fares may choose a Preferred or exit row seat at no cost upon check-in.

Passengers on Econo and EconoFlex may continue to select a Standard seat upon check-in at no extra cost, as is currently the case, while anyone on a Basic fare will be assigned a seat upon check-in.

WestJet justifies implementing these fees since Preferred seats provide additional legroom and are located at the front of the economy cabin, which allows for a faster exit upon arrival. Likewise, WestJet justifies fees for exit row seats since they provide additional legroom, and allow guests to board the aircraft earlier.

The fee to select a Preferred or exit row seat varies, depending your fare and flight destination. Passengers booked on a Premium or Business fare may select Preferred and exit row seats at no fee.

Upcoming Changes to WestJet Silver & Gold Preferred Seat Selection

If you have WestJet Rewards Silver or Gold status, there are some upcoming changes to how you’re required to use advance seat selection vouchers.

As of November 7, 2023, travellers with WestJet Rewards Silver and Gold status will need to use advance seat selection vouchers prior to check-in in order to reserve a Preferred or exit row seat at no cost.

Currently, Silver and Gold members may redeem advance seat selection vouchers for Preferred and exit row seats at check-in. Therefore, if you’d like to enjoy some extra space, you’ll just need to plan in advance going forward.

Platinum members will still have the option to select Preferred and exit row seats at no charge prior to and during check-in; however, if they’re using a guest seat selection voucher, they’ll need to redeem it prior to check-in if they’re treating a guest to a Preferred or exit row seat at no cost.

WestJet Aims for Ancillary Revenue

In WestJet’s announcement of the upcoming changes listed above, the airline mentions that the new fee structure is put in place to help guests prepare for a smooth travel experience.

If you plan on checking a bag for your flight, there’s certainly no reason to pay for bags at check-in or with an agent at the airport, since you’ll have to pay more.

However, if you travel with WestJet with any sort of frequency, you can avoid paying fees for your first checked bag by simply holding the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard . Even with an annual fee of $119, you get a free checked bag for yourself and up to eight guests travelling on the same reservation, and the card can essentially pay for itself through waived baggage fees on one booking.

As for passengers on Econo and EconoFlex fares having to pay for a Preferred or exit row seat at check-in, it’s clear that WestJet is looking to generate ancillary revenue by charging for these seats in most situations.

If you’re a keener who has checked in diligently at 24 hours prior to departure to score one of these seats for free, unfortunately, you’ll now have to pay as much as everyone else.

When it comes to Silver and Gold members needing to use advance seat selection certificates prior to check-in to score Preferred and exit row seats at no cost, I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t do this to begin with, ideally immediately after booking.

On the other hand, if you’re someone who used to use advance seat selection vouchers at check-in to score Preferred or exit row seats, just be mindful that you’ll need to change your habits.

WestJet has announced some changes to the fees it charges for checked baggage paid for at the airport, as well as seat selection fees for Preferred and exit row seats.

These changes come into effect as of November 7, 2023, and when it comes to baggage fees, you’ll be subject to the current charges if your booking is made on or prior to November 6, 2023.

If you travel with WestJet with any frequency, be sure to pick up the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard to save on baggage fees on an ongoing basis.

This airline has slid so far downhill. Some of the destinations are great, but you’re really getting budget airline treatment for upper-mid tier pricing. Very unhappy that AC has abandoned Calgary because theres so little accountability now.

Exit row seats should be set aside for people 6 3 or more. Being tall and forced to sit in economy seats is torture 😫 show some accommodation

WestJet is a classic example of monopoly and basically offer less and get customers to pay more. I feel for Western Canada. Was once a good airline and the last 3 years have gone so downhill. At least we have Porter out East that’s really competing with AC.

Once you start going downhill I guess you can’t go back? Westjet used to be better in price and service to Air Canada but after nickel and diming consumers to death (not to mention a “restructure” of their tiers and their useless Westjet dollars) they finally did it; they finally met their goal of being worse than Air Canada! Congrats! Grudgingly going back to flying with Air Canada.

Westjet’s old fleet, pathetic loyalty program, refusal to join an airline alliance, garbage code share partners, and these new sneaky fee increases have turned what was a proud western Canadian organization into a ultra-low-cost-carrier masquerading as a respectable airline. These days, I will fly Porter, or Air Canada, or even a different route, before I’ll consider a Westjet flight. ONEX bean counters have wasted no time in ruining a reputable company since the buyout in 2019.

You have mentioned that simply holding a RBC Westjet World Elite Master could avoid paying the checked bag fee. You meant even I did not use the card to pay for my air ticket too. Please advise. Thanks. HUA

The benefit is attached to your WestJet Rewards number, so as long as you have an eligible credit card and attach your WestJet Rewards number to your booking, you’ll enjoy the benefit. In other words, no, you don’t have to pay for the ticket with your card to get free checked bags.

By the way, it is true this also applies to aeroplan from Air Canada— do not have to pay for the ticket with the aeroplan card to get free checked bags.

From the RBC website:

As the primary cardholder you can receive your first checked bag free for yourself and up to eight (8) additional guests travelling on the same reservation.2 To make sure you are not charged for your first checked bag please ensure that the WestJet Rewards ID that is associated with your card is included on your reservation.

Please note, free bags are tied to the WestJet Rewards ID of the primary card holder and the cardholder’s name must be on the reservation. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept cards shown at the airport or the WestJet Rewards ID of the secondary cardholder. Flights must be operated by WestJet.

Sounds to me like Westjet don’t want anyone to fly unless your rich!!!!. What with the increase in the airfare, all the extras for checked bags, seat selection and nothing to eat on longer flights, unless you buy a dry sandwich. Wish we had more competition out of Calgary

Your airfare includes a seat, but the airline wants you pay more | Cruising Altitude

seat selection westjet

I am old enough to remember a time when you could pick your seat for free on every flight on just about every airline. That’s because those pesky fees are relatively new. They started to gain traction among full-service carriers in the mid-to-late 2000s, and by 2018, the big three U.S. carriers were all charging them on at least some tickets.

There was a time when there were no Byzantine ticket structures where some fares included seat selection, and others barred you from choosing your location on the plan in advance, or at least from doing so for free.

But nowadays it’s different.

Low-cost airlines like Spirit and Frontier, of course, charge extra for just about everything, but even the legacy carriers, American, Delta and United, have fare classes in economy now that don’t include seat selection. Some charge extra depending on the seat’s location, even if you’ve paid for a ticket that includes selection.

British Airways takes things a step that is ridiculously far: charging business class passengers a fee on top of their ticket price to select their flatbed seats. For example, on a round-trip itinerary departing from New York on Feb. 22 and returning from London on March 6, it costs around $130 per person each way to choose a seat in business, on top of the $3,300 cost of the round-trip ticket. Keep in mind that pricing is also dynamic and will rise or drop depending on timing and the exact location of the seat, with seats in the center of the plane closer to the lower class dividers costing less.

I’m afraid these fees are becoming a staple with airlines.

“These fees are beginning to rival what they collect for baggage at many carriers,” Jay Sorensen, president at the airline consulting firm IdeaWorksCompany, told me. “The rapid embrace of assigned seating fees by all airlines has been a surprise to me. The extent to which they have been such powerful generators of revenue has been a surprise to me as well.”

Of course, there are ways to avoid paying the fees, from flying an airline that doesn’t charge them or buying a ticket that includes seat selection to having frequent flyer status that gives you free seats as a perk.

Keep in mind that these fees are technically optional. If you buy a ticket, you’ll have a seat on your flight. In many cases, you just won’t have the option of choosing where that seat is without shelling out extra. Airlines will assign you an unclaimed seat when you check in if you haven’t paid to pick one in advance.

Here’s what to know.

How common are seat selection fees?

Most airlines charge seat selection fees one way or another, Sorensen said, whether it’s by selling lower-fare tickets that don’t include seat preferences or simply by making passengers pay for their seats individually. Even Southwest Airlines, which famously does not assign seats, has its ways of generating seating revenue.

“One could say, well, Southwest doesn’t have these fees, but Southwest does have an early boarding fee,” Sorensen said. “If you want to get a better seat, you’re going to have to pay a priority boarding fee.”

If you’ve flown in the last few years, you’ve probably seen at least some of the ways airlines squeeze extra revenue out of their seats. The Wall Street Journal recently reported economy seat selection fees as high as $100 on some flights.

How can I avoid paying for a seat on an airplane?

Although the fees have become common across the industry, not every passenger on every flight pays them outright. For example, as a frequent flyer with Delta Air Lines, I have complimentary access to preferred seats in their main cabin – those closer to the front of the plane that other passengers would need to pay extra to select during booking.

Sorensen said free seat selection for preferred or extra legroom seats is a valuable, if somewhat frustrating, perk for frequent flyers, especially now that upgrades are getting harder to come by.

For more casual travelers, however, avoiding seat selection fees can be difficult. Even if you don’t pay them directly, you may be compelled to buy a more expensive ticket that will let your entire travel group stick together onboard. If you’re already paying extra, you may also be tempted to buy a higher-fare class, which can provide perks like more legroom or a nicer seat, though, of course, at a steeper price.

What happens if I don’t pay for seat selection?

As I mentioned previously, you don’t have to pay to select a seat, but you’re much more likely to wind up stuck between two strangers at the back of the plane if you don’t.

Are airline seat selection fees legal?

The Biden administration has taken a hard look at ancillary airline revenue, and Congress is considering different legislation to crack down on airline seating fees.

President Joe Biden urged Congress in March 2023 to introduce legislation that would bar airlines at least from charging fees for families with young children who want to sit together, and some airlines have already voluntarily implemented such policies.

The Department of Transportation has a dashboard that outlines these policies by airline.

For now, however, airline seat fees remain unrestricted and hard to avoid.

Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3

National origin:- Soviet Union Role:- Fighter Interceptor Manufacturer:- Mikoyan-Gurevich Designer:- First flight:- 29th October 1940 Introduction:- 1941 Status:- Retired 1945 Produced:- 1940-1941 Number built:- 3,422 Primary users:- Soviet Air Forces (VVS); Soviet Air Defence Forces (PVO); Soviet Naval Aviation Developed from:- Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-1 Variants:- Mikoyan-Gurevich I-211 Operational history MiG-3s were delivered to frontline fighter regiments beginning in the spring of 1941 and were a handful for pilots accustomed to the lower-performance and docile Polikarpov I-152 and I-153 biplanes and the Polikarpov I-16 monoplane. It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1. Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots. In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited. Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: "The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank." On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational. An additional 64 MiGs were assigned to Naval Aviation, 38 in the Air Force of the Baltic Fleet and 26 in the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet. The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost. The most unusual case was the pair of MiG-3s dispatched from the 55th on a reconnaissance mission to PloieÅŸti that failed to properly calculate their fuel consumption and both were forced to land when they ran out of fuel. Most of the MiG-3s assigned to the interior military districts were transferred to the PVO where their lack of performance at low altitudes was not so important. On 10 July 299 were assigned to the PVO, the bulk of them belonging to the 6th PVO Corps at Moscow, while only 293 remained with the VVS, and 60 with the Naval Air Forces, a total of only 652 despite deliveries of several hundred aircraft. By 1 October, on the eve of the German offensive towards Moscow codenamed Operation Typhoon, only 257 were assigned to VVS units, 209 to the PVO, and 46 to the Navy, a total of only 512, a decrease of 140 fighters since 10 July, despite deliveries of over a thousand aircraft in the intervening period. By 5 December, the start of the Soviet counter-offensive that drove the Germans back from the gates of Moscow, the Navy had 33 MiGs on hand, the VVS 210, and the PVO 309. This was a total of 552, an increase of only 40 aircraft from 1 October. Over the winter of 1941-42 the Soviets transferred all of the remaining MiG-3s to the Navy and PVO so that on 1 May 1942 none were left on strength with the VVS. By 1 May 1942, Naval Aviation had 37 MiGs on strength, while the PVO had 323 on hand on 10 May. By 1 June 1944, the Navy had transferred all its aircraft to the PVO, which reported only 17 on its own strength, and all of those were gone by 1 January 1945. Undoubtedly more remained in training units and the like, but none were assigned to combat units by then.
