King James Bible KJV

“And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. ” King James Version (KJV)

Luke 8:10 Context

7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? 10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 They on the rock are they , which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

Matthew 13:10-17 New King James Version

The purpose of parables ( a ).

10  And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”

11  He answered and said to them, “Because ( B ) it has been given to you to know the [ a ] mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12  ( C ) For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13  Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14  And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:

( D ) ‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not ( E ) perceive; 15  For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears ( F ) are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have ( G ) closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I [ b ] should ( H ) heal them.’

16  But ( I ) blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; 17  for assuredly, I say to you ( J ) that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

10 important things to know about Ash Wednesday

Pope Francis celebrates Ash Wednesday at the Church of SantAnselmo allAventino on February 14 2018 Credit Vatican Media 5 CNA

By Diego Lopez Marina

ACI Prensa Staff, Feb 14, 2024 / 10:20 am

Ash Wednesday begins the holy season of Lent, which is structured to spiritually prepare to walk with the Lord through his passion and celebrate his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Below are 10 important things to know about Ash Wednesday and its significance.

1. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent.

Ash Wednesday begins the 40 days in which the Church calls the faithful to conversion and to truly prepare to live the mysteries of the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The Roman Missal, which prescribes the ritual for Ash Wednesday, explains that at Mass the ashes made from the palms blessed on Palm Sunday of the previous year are blessed and placed on the foreheads of the faithful.

2. The use of ashes developed over the years.

The tradition of placing ashes on penitents dates back to the early Church. Back then people placed the ashes on their heads and appeared before the community with a “penitential habit” to receive the sacrament of reconciliation on Holy Thursday. Starting in the 11th century, the Church of Rome placed ashes on all the faithful who would come forward at the beginning of this time.

3. Ashes remind us of the need for God’s mercy.

Ashes are a symbol. Their function is described in No. 125 of the Directory on Popular Piety and Liturgy, a document published by the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments:

“In the Roman rite, the beginning of the 40 days of penance is marked with the austere symbol of ashes, which are used in the liturgy of Ash Wednesday. The use of ashes is a survival from an ancient rite according to which converted sinners submitted themselves to canonical penance. The act of putting on ashes symbolizes fragility and mortality, and the need to be redeemed by the mercy of God. Far from being a merely external act, the Church has retained the use of ashes to symbolize that attitude of internal penance to which all the baptized are called during Lent. The faithful who come to receive ashes should be assisted in perceiving the implicit internal significance of this act, which disposes them toward conversion and renewed Easter commitment.”

4. Ashes have more than one meaning.

The word “ashes” represents the product of the combustion of something by fire. This takes on a symbolic connotation of death, the fleeting quality of temporal things, but also of humility and penitence.

Ashes, as a sign of humility, remind the Christian of his origin and his end: “the Lord God formed the man out of the dust of the ground” (Gn 2:7); “until you return to the ground, from which you were taken” (Gn 3:19).

5. Ashes are made from palms used on Palm Sunday.

Per the instructions of the Roman Missal, ashes are typically supposed to be made from last year’s Palm Sunday palm branches.

These branches are then burned down into a fine powder and, in the United States, are mixed with holy water or chrism oil to create a light paste.

6. The ashes are placed on the forehead at the end of the homily.

The distribution of ashes takes place at Mass at the end of the homily, and laypeople are allowed to assist the priest. The ashes are placed on the forehead making the sign of the cross while the minister says: “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return” or “Repent and believe in the Gospel.”

The person receiving the ashes then goes back to his or her pew in silence, meditating on the words that were spoken.

7. Ashes can also be distributed without Mass.

When there is no priest, the faithful can receive ashes without a Mass, but this is not the norm.  However, in such a case it is recommended that the distribution of ashes be preceded by a Liturgy of the Word.

It is important to remember that like all sacramentals, ashes can only be blessed by a priest or deacon.

8. Ashes can be received by non-Catholics.

Anyone can receive this sacramental, even non-Catholics. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states in No. 1670: “Sacramentals do not confer the grace of the Holy Spirit in the way that the sacraments do, but by the Church’s prayer, they prepare us to receive grace and dispose us to cooperate with it.”

9. It is not obligatory to receive ashes.

(Story continues below)

Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation and therefore receiving ashes is not obligatory. However, it is always recommended to attend Mass.

10. On Ash Wednesday fasting and abstinence are mandatory.

On Ash Wednesday, fasting and abstinence are mandatory — as on Good Friday — for those 18–59 years of age. Outside of those limits it is optional. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops explains that “fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular mealtimes if necessary but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.”

Abstinence from eating meat is mandatory from the age of 14. All Fridays of Lent are also required days of abstinence. This also applies to the other Fridays of the year, although depending on the country it can be replaced by another type of mortification or offering such as praying the rosary.

5 ways to observe St. Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday

A seminarian from Chile offers couples some advice for marking both days on Feb. 14.

What is Ash Wednesday? Here’s what to know about the holy day marking the beginning of Lent

given to you to know the mysteries

Lent is a 40-day season of prayer, fasting and giving that Catholics and some other Christian denominations observe as a time of repentance and closeness to God in preparation for the day of Christ's resurrection, celebrated on Easter .

Ash Wednesday is the kickoff of that season that is one of five on the Catholic liturgical calendar, along with Advent, Christmas, Easter, and Ordinary Time .

That means you may see someone walking around with an ash cross on their forehead this Wednesday. Don't try to clean their forehead: Here's what it means and why the day figures so prominently in the Lenten season.

What is Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday is the first day of the liturgical season of Lent that falls six and half weeks before Easter each year.

Members of the Catholic Church ages 18 to 59 are required to observe Lent and fast on Ash Wednesday, starting at 14-years-old.

Ash Wednesday dates back to the 11th century, according to the Vatican , but the tradition of marking one's forward with ashes is rooted in the ancient Hebrew custom of "clothing oneself in sackcloth and dusting oneself with ashes as a sign of penance," according to Hallow , an app for Catholic prayer and meditation.

When is Ash Wednesday 2024?

This year, Ash Wednesday falls on Feb. 14.

Why is Ash Wednesday important?

Ash Wednesday places Catholics and other denominations of faith in the place of Jesus’ entry into the desert before His death. It is a symbolic turning of one's heart towards God, recognizing the brokenness that exists and the need for salvation.

"Ash Wednesday is the perfect opportunity for us all to recommit to many of the things we know we need to do," Hallow CEO Alex Jones said.

For some, it could mean prayer and meditation, Jones added. For others, it could look like fasting food or social media.

"It might be serving at a local shelter or being more generous in our giving. Whatever it is, Lent is the perfect time to take just 40 days and commit to it," Jones said.

What do the ashes symbolize?

The ashes symbolize our mortality.

On Ash Wednesday, you may see neighbors walking around with ash crosses on their foreheads.

During mass on this day, priests will add crosses made of ashes to foreheads reminding Catholics, but you do not need to be Catholic to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday. Other Christian denominations and even those disconnected from traditions of faith, sometimes observe.

When is Easter 2024? How its date is determined each year and why some celebrate.

Can you eat meat on Ash Wednesday?

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the only two days of fasting and abstinence required by the Catholic Church, though Catholics are encouraged to abstain from meat on Fridays during the 40-day season of Lent.

Christ fasted in the desert for 40 days leading up to His death and resurrection, so believers choose to fast as well according to their own conviction in the days leading up to Easter. Fasting, just like ashes, is a sign of repentance and aims to stir up a spiritual hunger.

What is Lent?

Just as the four-week season of Advent prepares believers for Jesus’s birth at Christmas, the 40-day season of Lent prepares believers for Jesus' death and resurrection at Easter.

This time of sacrifice and repentance prepares the heart to receive the reconciliation that Christ offers. An individual gets to choose what they'd like to give up during the time of Lent, as Jones shared.

When does Lent start and end?

This year, Lent starts on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14) and ends on either March 29, Good Friday, or on March 30, " Holy Saturday ," the day before Easter, depending on the denomination.

Screen Rant

Stranger things season 5's priorities ease concerns with it being the final season.

Stranger Things season 5 has a lot to cover, but the producers seem to have their priorities in order, which is great news for the main characters.

  • Stranger Things season 5 will prioritize giving proper closure to the main characters.
  • The creators are avoiding the mistake of introducing too many new characters in the final season.
  • The show must strike a balance between spectacle and narrative to properly wrap up the story.

Stranger Things season 5 has a lot to cover and solve, and luckily, the producers’ priorities are easing some big concerns. After four successful seasons full of drama, action, and shocking reveals, Stranger Things is coming to an end with its fifth season . Stranger Things season 4 has been the series’ biggest season so far, and even though it solved a couple of mysteries about the Upside Down and more, it left many more that will have to be addressed in the final season – but that’s not the only thing Stranger Things season 5 has to do.

The ending of Stranger Things season 4 left the audience with a major cliffhanger as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) wasn’t defeated, and after attacking Max (Sadie Sink), his big plan was set into motion. The final scene of the season saw the Upside Down bleeding into the human world through massive cracks across Hawkins, painting a very somber future for Hawkins and, possibly, beyond. This, along with mysteries like Vecna and the origins of the Upside Down, other loose ends, and the introduction of new characters raised concerns about the main characters and their respective endings, but the producers seem to have their priorities in order.

Gaten Matarazzo's Stranger Things Season 5 Pitch Is Exactly What The Show Needs

Stranger things season 5 will give its main characters the time they deserve, stranger things season 5’s producers know the main characters are the priority..

Stranger Things has its young cast that the audience has seen grow over the course of four seasons, a teenage cast, and an adult cast, all of them considered main characters as they have all had a key role in the biggest plots. Because of this, one of the biggest concerns about Stranger Things season 5 and the magnitude of it is that it won’t be able to give proper closure to every one of these characters . This concern grew when Linda Hamilton’s casting was announced and Amybeth McNulty was confirmed to return as Vickie, Robin’s crush.

The producers seem to have their priorities in order and know that the main cast should be given the time and attention they need.

While having Linda Hamilton on board and Vickie coming back is not bad, Stranger Things season 5 is at risk of either underdeveloping these characters or focusing too much on them and not giving the main characters the time they deserve. Luckily, the producers seem to have their priorities in order and know that the main cast should be given the time and attention they need. Speaking to People in February 2024, director and producer Shawn Levy said that the heart and soul of Stranger Things are its characters, and in this final season, they are “ intact and are as central as spectacle ”.

Given how big Stranger Things season 4 was and its massive cliffhanger ending, season 5 is expected to be as big or more, which is a risky move as the team behind the series could end up focusing more on making an event out of the season rather than on its quality. Levy’s words should ease these concerns as they show the producers are aware that the most important thing in Stranger Things season 5 is to wrap up the characters’ stories .

Stranger Things Season 5 Learned From Past Seasons’ Mistakes

Stranger things season 5 is already avoiding some past mistakes..

Nancy Dustin Steve Eddie Robin and Erica around a book in Stranger Things season 4

Shawn Levy isn’t the only one aware of what’s truly important in Stranger Things season 5. Speaking to IndieWire in 2022, series’ creators Matt and Ross Duffer spoke about introducing new characters in every season of Stranger Things and how they planned to break this pattern in the final season. Ross Duffer explained that they always want to make sure that new characters are an integral part of the narrative , and that any moment spent with a new character takes time away from those who have already been there. Matt Duffer added they were trying to resist adding new characters in season 5 so they can focus “ on the OG characters ”.

The Duffers seem to have learned from these past mistakes and are consciously looking to avoid them in Stranger Things ’ final season.

Over the course of four seasons, Stranger Things has introduced some very interesting characters, though most of them end up dead, as happened with Bob Newby and Eddie Muson. However, there have been complaints about there being too many new characters that, just like the Duffers said, only take the attention away from the main characters who have been around since season 1 (or season 2, as is Max’s case). The Duffers seem to have learned from these past mistakes and are consciously looking to avoid them in Stranger Things ’ final season.

Stranger Things Must Find Balance Between Spectacle & Narrative

Stranger things has to be careful not to neglect certain elements..

Stranger Things Eleven Henry Creel Vecna

Season 5 also has a lot of things to address and mysteries to solve in order to give a satisfying ending to the show.

As mentioned above, Stranger Things season 5 is expected to be a huge spectacle and event given how big season 4 was, the shocking reveals it made, and its cliffhanger ending – if season 5 went smaller, being the final season, it would most likely be seen as a disappointment, which would hurt the show’s legacy. Season 5 also has a lot of things to address and mysteries to solve in order to give a satisfying ending to the show, but in addition to all this, it also has to go back to its main characters to properly wrap up their stories.

With all these expectations and needs, the writers of Stranger Things season 5 have to find a balance between making a big spectacle and giving the main characters the time they deserve and proper closure, which even though is a big challenge, it shouldn’t be an impossible one.

Hearings on Trump's criminal cases in New York and Georgia

By Kara Scannell , Lauren del Valle , Jeremy Herb , Zachary Cohen , Jason Morris, Nick Valencia , Kristina Sgueglia, Dan Berman , Tori B. Powell and Matt Meyer , CNN

Here are key takeaways from Fani Willis' stunning testimony

From CNN's Marshall Cohen, Devan Cole, Holmes Lybrand and Katelyn Polantz

The Georgia election subversion case against  Donald Trump and 14 of his allies took a stunning turn Thursday when two top prosecutors testified under oath about their romantic relationship at a hearing triggered by allegations of self-dealing that have the potential to derail the entire effort.

The all-day hearing escalated steadily throughout the day, culminating with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis taking the witness stand for a combative brawl with defense attorneys that drew several rebukes from the judge.

These are key takeaways:

  • Willis' defiant afternoon: Things quickly went off the rails. Willis didn’t act much like a traditional witness on the stand and was more like a prosecutor, arguing with the defense attorneys, raising objections, making legal arguments and even having exchanges with Judge Scott McAfee . She even raised her voice at one point. This led to a few rebukes from McAfee. Willis repeatedly accused some of the defense attorneys of peddling lies – before and after the judge’s admonishment.
  • Willis says she's not on trial: Willis seized several opportunities to defend herself. “You think I’m on trial,” Willis said, in her sharpest pushback of the day. “These people are on trial for trying to steal an election in 2020,” she added, pointing toward the table of attorneys representing defendants in the criminal case. “I’m not on trial, no matter how hard you try to put me on trial.” She later slammed the defense attorneys, calling them “confused” and “intrusive.”
  • When did the relationship start? On the stand, prosecutor Nathan Wade stuck to his earlier claim – in a sworn affidavit submitted to the court – that his romantic relationship with Willis began in early 2022 and that they split travel and vacation expenses. But Robin Bryant-Yeartie, a former friend of Willis and Fulton County employee, contradicted that claim , testifying that she had “no doubt” that the Willis-Wade affair began in late 2019. Notably, that would be before Willis hired Wade to lead the Trump probe in late 2021.
  • Wade and Willis describe using cash for reimbursements: Wade and Willis have offered a simple explanation for why there’s essentially no paper trail to back up his claims they split expenses: Willis used cash .
  • When did the relationship end? There was also a dispute over when the relationship ended, and whether it had any impact on the decision to seek the massive RICO indictment against Trump and others last August. Both said the relationship ended in summer 2023. Willis implied that the physical component ended earlier in the summer, but that the two had a “tough conversation” that fully ended things afterward.
  • Huge distraction from Trump's charges: Nothing that happened Thursday undercut the factual allegations against Trump, Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, or the other GOP allies who are accused of trying to overturn the 2020 election. But the hearing shifted the conversation away from those allegation and away from Trump’s legal woes for now.

Trump reacts to Willis' testimony in Georgia

From CNN's Kate Sullivan

Former President Donald Trump on Thursday reacted to c and her lead prosecutor on the 2020 election case, Nathan Wade.

“FANI NEVER PAID CASH. SHE GOT FREE TRIPS AND OTHER THINGS FROM HER LOVER, WITH THE EXORBITANT AMOUNTS OF MONEY SHE AUTHORIZED TO BE PAID TO HIM. A GIANT SCAM. WITCH HUNT!!!”  Trump posted  on Truth Social.

Wade and Willis pushed back against allegations from the defense that Willis was essentially getting kickbacks from Wade in the form of vacations. They said they split expenses and that Willis reimbursed Wade in cash for certain things.

Georgia judge says no ruling will be issued tomorrow in case over whether to dismiss Willis

From CNN’s Holmes Lybrand

Fulton County Superior Judge Scott McAfee looks on during a hearing at the Fulton County Courthouse on Thursday, February 15, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee said he would not issue any rulings Friday after the evidentiary hearing on efforts to disqualify District Attorney Fani Willis from the Georgia election subversion case.

“I’m not ruling on any of this tomorrow,” McAfee said in closing the hearing Thursday. “This is something that’s going to be taken under advisement on all aspects.”

McAfee also raised the possibility of scheduling final arguments from the parties at a later date.

“My goal, my hope is perhaps we can just close the evidence tomorrow, and we can take it from there,” McAfee said.

Willis woke up "ready to testify," bishop who prayed with her before court says

From CNN's Nick Valencia and Devon Sayers

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis woke up Thursday morning "ready to testify," according to the African Methodist Episcopal bishop who says he prayed with her before today’s hearing.

Bishop Reginald Jackson told CNN he met with Willis earlier this morning before court began to "offer her words of encouragement," and they prayed together.

"She seemed comfortable. She seemed eager to address," Jackson said.  "I had the feeling this morning that she was ready for this. It's been going on for over a month, these efforts to destroy her reputation,” he added. “She wanted to meet it head on.”

When the bishop spoke to Willis this morning before court, he said he told Willis "to keep praying and that the people have her back. I really believe they do."

Hearing ends for the day and Willis will continue testimony Friday

From CNN's Holmes Lybrand and Dan Berman

The first day of an evidentiary hearing over whether to dismiss Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from the Georgia election subversion case has concluded after Willis and her top prosecutor, Nathan Wade, testified over their relationships and payments they made during vacations together.

The district attorney's testimony will continue Friday at 9 a.m. ET, with Willis starting with under cross examination from District Attorney lawyer Anna Cross.

Defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant, who is leading the removal effort, said she plans to call two more witnesses after that.

Cross also said she had three to four witnesses to call tomorrow, which she estimated would take four to five hours.

Willis: "I'm not on trial, no matter how hard you try to put me on trial"

From CNN's Devan Cole

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis testifies during a hearing on the Georgia election interference case on Thursday in Atlanta.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis pushed back forcefully on Thursday as she engaged in a tense back and forth with a defense attorney seeking to disqualify her from the 2020 election interference case she’s brought against Donald Trump and others.

“You've been intrusive into people's personal lives. You're confused,” she told Ashleigh Merchant, an attorney for defendant Mike Roman.

“You think I'm on trial. These people are on trial for trying to steal an election in 2020,” she added, pointing toward the table of attorneys representing defendants in the criminal case.

Willis says Wade made sexist remarks during relationship

From CNN’s Devan Cole and Marshall Cohen

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis testifies during a hearing on the Georgia election interference case on Thursday in Atlanta.

In an extraordinary moment in court Thursday, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis testified about sexist behavior from Nathan Wade, the top prosecutor on the election interference case with whom she once had a romantic relationship.

“It's interesting that we're here about this money. Mr. Wade is used to women that, as he told me one time: 'The only thing a woman can do for him is make him a sandwich,'” she testified as she faced tough questioning from defense attorney Steve Sadow, who represents Donald Trump, about whether their romantic relationship ended last summer because of the forthcoming indictment against the former president and his allies.

“We would have brutal arguments about the fact that I am your equal," she continued. "I don't need anything from a man — a man is not a plan. A man is a companion. And so there was tension always in our relationship, which is why I would give him his money back. I don't need anybody to foot my bills. The only man who's ever foot my bills completely is my daddy.”

The defense attorneys have zeroed in on the timing of when the Willis-Wade relationship ended because it's critical to their self-dealing allegations against Willis.

In court filings, defendant Mike Roman's team argued that Willis would be incentivized to bring an indictment because it would prolong the case, and keep the money flowing to Wade. And, according to their theory, back to her as well, through vacations and other gifts.

Willis said on the stand that their break-up had “absolutely nothing” to do with the indictment.

Fulton County judge admonishes parties to remain professional

Fulton County Superior Judge Scott McAfee looks on during a hearing in the case of the State of Georgia v. Donald John Trump at the Fulton County Courthouse on February 15, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee admonished parties in court on Thursday after heated exchanges between District Attorney Fani Willis and the defense attorney trying to get her removed from the Georgia election subversion case.

“We all know what professionalism looks like,” McAfee said. “We won’t talk over each other. And from there, we’ll get through this.”

The judge took a brief break during Willis’ testimony after she raised her voice in court, holding up several motions filed by defense attorney Ashleigh Merchant and declaring: “It is a lie.”

Merchant was asking if the top prosecutor she hired to investigate Trump had ever visited Willis “at the place you lay your head?”

“So let’s be clear because you’ve lied in this,” Willis said, pointing to copies she held of the filings. Willis, continuing to point at the copies, added, “right here, I think you lied right here.”

Willis details trips she took with top prosecutor in Trump case

District Attorney Fani Willis detailed vacations and trips she took with prosecutor Nathan Wade, who she hired to investigate Donald Trump and others for election interference in Georgia, saying she would pay cash for everything.

“When I travel I always pay cash,” Willis said of the trips with Wade, saying that she paid Wade back for certain travel and excursions during the trips.

Willis has been accused of financially benefitting from hiring Wade, who defense attorneys say paid for vacations for the two. The vacations, according to Willis, included trips to Aruba, the Bahamas Belize as well as Napa Valley where they attended wine tastings.

“He likes wine, I don’t really like wine to be honest with you,” Willis said. “I like Grey Goose.”

Hazbin Hotel Season 1 Finale and the Mystery of the Altruist Alastor

I want answers.

Hazbin Hotel Season 1 Finale and the Mystery of the Altruist Alastor - IGN Image

This column contains spoilers for Prime Video’s Hazbin Hotel Season 1, and does not relate to additional Vivienne Medrano works, including previous iterations of the characters.

If it’s not evident by the fact that it currently makes up 50% of the topics of my column this year, I am obsessed with Hazbin Hotel. I explained a big part of that obsession in my first Hazbin Streaming Wars entry , but the Season 1 finale left me with an absolute need to discuss Alastor further. The Radio Demon was basically built from the ground up to tick all of my obsessive boxes specifically. Old gods vs. new gods vibes in his feud with the V’s? Check. Shrouded in multiple layers of mystery? Check. Absolute evil forced to do good? Check. I’m gonna stop, but do know that I could do this all day.

All of the biggest questions and revelations coming out of the last two episodes are surrounding the Radio Demon, so let’s dive in.

A Smile’s a Powerful Tool, My Dear

“An enjoyable bunch to be around. I admit, one could grow accustomed.”

A huge part of the intrigue surrounding Alastor is that you simply do not know whose side this demon is on. The easy explanation is that he’s on his own side, swaying wherever the wind takes him, but his very character makes the simple answer void. Dude calls himself the Radio Demon; if this were about being on his own side he would have shacked up with Vox and his contemporary media goons the moment he was asked.

And all demons want power, right? Right. But the answer’s more nuanced here, too. Alastor is interested in power just as much as the other overlords, but not at the expense of violating his own code. A code that, at this moment, we know very little about! Whatever it is, it’s rooted in the idea that Vox and the rest of the V’s can go to hell along with the rest of the TV, porn, and social media worshippers! Er… deeper in hell? You know what I mean.

So here’s this demon. He doesn’t have control of his soul — more on that later — but his service to Charlie seems to go deeper than that. Alastor and Niffty share a moment before the final battle where they’re smiling over their complicated little found family and commiserating over the fact that they really do enjoy their company. Also, when he helps the Hazbins, his deals are never for souls (Husk was well before). And finally, the comic A Day in the Life follows the Radio Demon on an average day which ultimately culminates in Alastor literally saving a lamb (demon). The only real indication of his monstrosity is his complicated relationship with Husk, a situation that the bartender fully acknowledges he got himself into. So I would like to echo Angel’s question to Mimsy from earlier in the series: What the hell is Alastor’s deal?!

Hazbin Hotel: Season One Exclusive Images

Hazbin Hotel follows Charlie, the princess of Hell, as she pursues her seemingly impossible goal of rehabilitating demons to peacefully reduce overpopulation in her kingdom. After a yearly extermination imposed by angels, she opens a hotel in the hopes that patrons will be "checking out" into Heaven. While most of Hell mocks her goal, her devoted partner Vaggie, and their first test subject, adult-film star Angel Dust, stick by her side. When a powerful entity known as the "Radio Demon" reaches out to assist Charlie in her endeavors, her crazy dream is given a chance to become a reality. The new series from Vivienne Medrano, A24, and FOX Entertainment’s Bento Box Entertainment will premiere Season One starting on January 19, 2024 on Prime Video.

Charlie Owes Alastor a Favor

“She’s filled with potential that I could guide. Stick with her, you'll be on the winning side.”

Speaking of deals, though of a different kind: Charlie owes Alastor a favor in exchange for the intel on how to kill angels. The Radio Demon could have offered this freely, of course, but he saw an opportunity to get guaranteed support from Charlie, the second most powerful creature in hell. The deal comes with a caveat: she will not hurt anyone for him. He agrees to this without pause, just like he made a deal with Vaggie in the premiere for something as simple as never forcing him to engage with television again.

[Extremely Benoit Blanc voice] His motives make no damn sense! They compel me, though.

There’s an argument to be made that Alastor’s not so much interested in being all-powerful so much as he’s interested in being singularly powerful. This means he’s not interested in banding together with people who can help so much as he is interested in being the most powerful being in hell. But even that argument falls to pieces when you consider how many allies Alastor has. Is he instead interested in forming an army through pleasantries?! I want answers!

Who Owns Alastor’s Soul?

So, like… It’s gotta be Lillith, right?

Charlie might be the second most powerful entity in hell, but plenty of the other Overlords see her kindness and take advantage of it. Alastor doesn’t seem to be the ‘take advantage’ type unless there’s a soul involved, but he’s torn people to shreds for a quarter of the snark the Princess of Hell gives him when she gets frustrated enough. He’s also made it clear that he’s completely unbothered by Lucifer, so his behavior isn’t driven by fear. At least not of two-thirds of the Morningstars.

When the Radio Demon disappeared seven years ago, was it Lillith who rescued him in his time of need in exchange for his soul? An unbreakable command from the Queen of Hell certainly goes a long way to explain at least some of Alastor’s behavior.

Does His ‘Alastor Altruist’ Speech Give Us Any Answers?

“Great Alastor altruist died for his friends. Sorry to disappoint this is not where this ends. I’m hungry for freedom like never before. The constraints of my deal surely have a backdoor. Once I figure out how to unclip my wings, guess who will be pulling all the strings.”

The guy’s definitely Going Through It™ when he delivers this line in the final song, but he also very clearly states that the purveyors and residents of the Hazbin Hotel are his friends. He wasn’t just making stuff up in his conversation with Niffty before the battle, either. He’s made fun of Charlie’s goal to save all the sinners in hell plenty of times before, but is it possible he’s warming to the idea in spite of himself?

His part in the song doesn’t technically need to set up anything nefarious, at least so far as Charlie and her friends are concerned. He did not, in fact, die while protecting his friends. And who isn’t hungry for freedom after a near-death experience, especially when you’re one of the baddest demons in hell?

But what strings does he want to pull? Whose?! Everyone’s?! I can’t believe the first season of this show was only eight episodes, and that it’s already over. It’s been a long time since something has hooked me this hard so fast. I need to know what this evil-ass altruist is up to next immediately!

Imran Khan’s ‘Victory Speech’ From Jail Shows A.I.’s Peril and Promise

It was not the first time the technology had been used in Pakistan’s notably repressive election season, but this time it got the world’s attention.

  • Share full article

A man, seen from behind, looks at an image of Imran Khan on a computer monitor.

By Yan Zhuang

Imran Khan, Pakistan’s former prime minister, has spent the duration of the country’s electoral campaign in jail, disqualified from running in what experts have described as one of the least credible general elections in the country’s 76-year history.

But from behind bars, he has been rallying his supporters in recent months with speeches that use artificial intelligence to replicate his voice, part of a tech-savvy strategy his party deployed to circumvent a crackdown by the military.

And on Saturday, as official counts showed candidates aligned with his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or P.T.I., winning the most seats in a surprise result that threw the country’s political system into chaos , it was Mr. Khan’s A.I. voice that declared victory.

“I had full confidence that you would all come out to vote. You fulfilled my faith in you, and your massive turnout has stunned everybody,” the mellow, slightly robotic voice said in the minute-long video, which used historical images and footage of Mr. Khan and bore a disclaimer about its A.I. origins. The speech rejected the victory claim of Mr. Khan’s rival, Nawaz Sharif, and urged supporters to defend the win.

As concerns grow about the use of artificial intelligence and its power to mislead, particularly in elections, Mr. Khan’s videos offer an example of how A.I. can work to circumvent suppression. But, experts say, they also increase fear about its potential dangers.

“In this case, it’s for a good end, perhaps an end we’d support — someone who’s locked up on trumped-up charges of corruption being able to speak to his supporters,” said Toby Walsh, author of “Faking It: Artificial Intelligence in a Human World” and a professor at the University of New South Wales. “But at the same time, it’s undermining our belief in the things we see and hear.”

Mr. Khan, a charismatic former cricket star, was ousted from power in 2022 and jailed last year, accused of leaking state secrets among other charges. He and his supporters have said military leaders orchestrated his removal, an accusation they reject.

During the election campaign, officials prevented his candidates from campaigning and censored news coverage of the party. In response, organizers held online rallies on platforms like YouTube and TikTok.

In December, his party began using A.I. to disseminate Mr. Khan’s message, creating the speeches based on notes he passed to his lawyers from prison, according to statements from the party , and putting them into video.

This is not the first time political parties have used artificial intelligence.

In South Korea, the then-opposition People Power Party created an A.I. powered avatar of its presidential candidate, Yoon Suk Yeol, which interacted virtually with voters and spoke in slang and quips to appeal to a younger demographic ahead of the 2022 vote. (He won.)

In the United States, Canada and New Zealand, politicians have used A.I. to create dystopian images to drive home their arguments, or to reveal the technology’s potentially dangerous capabilities, as in a video with Jordan Peele and a deepfake Barack Obama.

During the 2020 state election in Delhi, India, Manoj Tiwari, a candidate from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, created an A.I. deepfake of himself speaking the Haryanvi language to target voters in that demographic. Unlike the Khan video, it did not appear to be clearly labeled as A.I.

“The integration of A.I., particularly deepfakes, into political campaigning is not a passing trend but a trend that will continue to evolve over time,” said Saifuddin Ahmed, an assistant professor at the school of communication and information at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.

4 Preparedness Valentine Cards to Give Your Loved Ones This Year

world globe

Emergency preparedness may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Valentine's Day, but it could be the most important gift you give your loved ones this year. Disasters can happen at any time, and having a starter emergency kit for the home or the road could make all the difference in an emergency.

Here are four thoughtful valentines you can give to those you hold dear.

Emergency Kit

blog_valentine-well-stocked-emergency-kit

This Valentine’s Day card says it all. Do you and your loved ones have the items you need in case of an emergency?

If not, one great gift that really shows your love is a disaster preparedness kit. When building your kit, include items such as:

  • Water (one gallon per person per day for several days for drinking and sanitation).
  • Food (at least a several-day supply of non-perishable food).
  • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert.
  • Flashlight.
  • First aid kit.
  • Extra batteries.
  • Whistle (to signal for help).

Remember that your kit will depend on you and your loved one’s needs. Once you have the basic items, consider what unique needs there are. If you have a pet, be sure to include pet supplies such as food and toys.

Evacuation Plan

Be My Evacuation Buddy

Are you and your valentine daydreaming about spending quality time together? While you're at it, remember to plan for where you’ll go if you need to evacuate during a disaster. You may not be together when an emergency occurs, so planning beforehand means you’ll always know where your partner will be during a disaster.

Prepare an evacuation plan for you and your valentine with the tips below.

Before an Evacuation

  • Learn the types of disasters that are likely in your community and the local emergency, evacuation and shelter plans for each specific disaster.
  • Plan  how you will leave and where you will go if you are advised to evacuate.
  • Identify several places you could go in an emergency such as a friend’s home in another town or a motel. Choose destinations in different directions so that you have options during an emergency.
  • If needed, identify a place to stay that will accept pets . Most public shelters allow only service animals.
  • Make sure you have a portable emergency kit in the car .

During an Evacuation

  • Check the  FEMA app  for a list of open shelters in your local area during an active disaster.
  • Listen to a battery-powered radio and follow local evacuation instructions.
  • Take your  emergency supply kit .
  • Leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather.
  • Take your pets with you but understand that only service animals may be allowed in public shelters.

After an Evacuation

  • If you are returning to disaster-affected areas after significant events, prepare for disruptions to daily activities and remember that it is dangerous to return home before storm debris is cleared.
  • Let friends and family know before you leave and when you arrive.
  • Charge devices and consider getting backup batteries in case power outages continue.

Fire Safety

Rose are Red, Violets are in bloom, 1/3 of all candle fires start in the bedroom..."

Do you and your valentine like to create the perfect ambiance with candles? Switching to battery-operated candles may be a good idea to help prevent candle fires.

Fires can be deadly, and it's important to be prepared. Here are the most essential tips to keep in mind:

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement.
  • Replace the entire smoke alarm unit every ten years or according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Create and practice a fire escape plan  with two ways out of each room.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher in your kitchen.
  • If there is a fire, drop down to the floor and crawl low under any smoke to your exit.
  • If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop and roll.
  • If pets are trapped inside your home, tell firefighters right away.
  • Before opening a door, feel the doorknob and door. If either is hot or smoke is coming around the door, leave the door closed and use your second way out.

Fire can spread rapidly. In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire. Keep your Valentine's Day plans from going up in flames by keeping the heat between you and your sweetheart and not in your home.

Flood Safety

Flood Elevated Home

Do you own a home with your valentine? Make sure it’s protected from flooding!

You can do this by:

  • Documenting all your belongings. This will help you with the insurance claims process if your home ever suffers from flooding damage.
  • Check your insurance. Most homeowners’ insurance policies don’t cover flood damage.
  • Store valuables and important documents in waterproof or water-resistant containers.
  • Elevate important items in your house. If you can, make sure that units located on ground level, such as furnaces, water heaters, electrical systems, and other utilities, are raised off the ground.

By giving the gift of preparedness, you're showing your loved ones how much you care about their safety and well-being while also giving them peace of mind. Being prepared can make all the difference in an emergency, and it's a gift that will last long after Valentine's Day.

This year, spread love and safety by giving the gift of preparedness. For more information on emergency preparedness and how to put together an emergency kit, visit Build A Kit | Ready.gov . You can also download the printable emergency checklist  to include in your Valentine’s Day gift.
